Ladies First When I was 10, Mom would scold me for not opening a door for her. Thirty years later, my wife waits for no door—or me for that matter. A generation apart, both could easily be described as fast-paced women who handled everything at work and in the home. As we raise our daughters I appreciate that the roles of gender are stretching towards equality—whether or not guys like me are stretching for the door. Please allow me to play doorman in a chivalrous respect to the impressive array of leading ladies in this month’s issue: Unless you’re a land developer or a member of Southlake’s Planning and Zoning committee, you may have never heard of Zena Rucker. The former teacher, flight instructor and motorcycle dealer has more than earned her latest seat at the table as a land developer. Now in her 80s, Rucker looks fondly across her feminist roots and her highly desirable 75-acre homestead in the heart of Southlake. Not stopping at Rucker’s 75 acres, Mayor Laura Hill won her bid to become Southlake’s first First Lady and now oversees the entirety of the city for the next three years. The former citizen of the year and city councilmember has played an integral role in the Southlake’s growth to date. With her youngest son now off at college, Mayor Hill is more determined than ever to keep Southlake growing in the right direction. Rucker and Hill’s accomplishments could fill an entire issue on their own, but then we would be leaving out other inspirational women like Linda Clark and Patti Stebbins who are spearheading the local efforts of such tremendous organizations as GRACE and Susan G. Komen this month. You’ll also find inspiration from more than a dozen area Women in Business. From yoga instructors and lawyers to a hospital president, these powerful women tell us their biggest achievements, challenges and, most importantly, what motivates them to greatness. Our daughters are charging ahead with incredible women like these as their role models. For this and automatic doors I am grateful.

PAN IN THEATERS OCTOBER 9
Same Place, New Faces? Starring Hugh Jackman (Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Blackbeard, Peter Pan’s enemy before the notorious Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund, Tron: Legacy), Pan is the latest adaption of the classic tale. Although the plot may be familiar—a young orphan boy is whisked away to Neverland to eventually discover his destiny as Peter Pan—the film doesn’t fail to entertain with J.M. Barrie’s original cast of characters, including the aforementioned Blackbeard and notorious Tiger Lily.

CARROLL BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING TOPS NATIONAL RANKINGS The Carroll Dragon boys’ swimming and diving team finished No. 1 in the public school national rankings by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association for the 2014-2015 school year. The Dragons have won five consecutive state championships. The Lady Dragons finished third in the public school rankings. The Carroll program (boys and girls) finished sixth in the nation. The Dragons open their competition season at the Jesuit Ranger Relays on October 3 at The Colony Natatorium. “Lots of work yet to do and some good fortune to go with it,” head coach Kevin Murphy said. FORMER CARROLL SWIMMER COMPETED IN U.S. NATIONALS Former Dragon and current Longhorn swimmer Jonathan Roberts competed in San Antonio August 6 through 10 at the U.S. Nationals competition. On Day 1, Roberts placed 6th in his heat in the 400 meter Freestyle and went on to place 8th in the A group finals that day. The next day, he competed in the 200 meter Freestyle, ranking 16th in his heat, and again ranking eighth in the finals (group B). Roberts, a sophomore at UT Austin, was co-captain of the 2013-2014 USA Swimming Junior National Team. He also swam for the North Texas Nadadores with teammate, Brett Ringgold, and competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
MEMBERS OF LADY DRAGON WATER POLO PLACED HIGHLY IN NATIONAL TOURNAMENT Several members of the Lady Dragon Water Polo Team competed at the USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics, the largest water polo tournament for its age group in the country, from July 30 to August 2 in Orange County, California. Erin Weisert, Gabi Gervasi, Ana Warner, Sophia Torres, Summer Meyers and Marina Nelson made up half of the winning 16U Girls team. Their team ranked the highest out of all teams from North Texas, placing 18th out of 96 in the Platinum division. The girls competed as part of Thunder Water Polo, a private North Texas club with one of its three locations in Southlake. This news comes after the Lady Dragon Water Polo Team took home the first TISCA State Championship title in Carroll High School history earlier this year. NEWSWEEK RANKS CARROLL IN TOP 150 HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE NATION, 10TH IN TEXAS Newsweek’s Top High Schools 2015 rankings were released, and Carroll Senior High School made the list at No. 145 of 500. The rankings assess schools based on a broad range of data to determine which institutions do the best job of preparing students for college. The list also ranks schools within their respective states, with Carroll coming in 10th in Texas. Carroll has an 82.7 percent college readiness score, a 100 percent graduation rate and 95.1 percent of students are college bound. Carroll also received a gold star for meeting Newsweek’s Equity measure by helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments. Check SouthlakeStyle. com for the full story.

FORMER DRAGON WON GOLD FOR TEAM USA Connor Hendrickson, a 2014 Carroll graduate and former Dragon runner, represented Team USA at the Pan American Junior Championships, which took place from July 31 to August 2 in Edmonton, Canada. There, Hendrickson won Gold in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:46. He traded for the lead several times throughout the race but pulled away with 800 meters and then extended his lead with 250 meters to go. Hendrickson’s final mile was under 4:20 and his last lap was 1:03. This was the single fastest time of all competitors throughout the 24-lap race. Hendrickson is in his sophomore year at The University of Texas, majoring in architectural engineering. He will compete again this fall for the Longhorn Cross Country team.

SOUTHLAKE’S OWN YOUTH SOCCER CLUB HEADS INTO SECOND YEAR Investing in his own neighborhood, as he calls it, Executive Director John Saeger opened Southlake’s very own youth soccer club, Velocity Elite, last April. Within a little over a year, the club tripled in size to six teams of girls. With former Division 1 college and professional athletes as coaches, its not hard to see why. The club focuses on the overall wellness of each player - the girls see a nutritionist and learn about concussion prevention and management. As the club’s second year in action got started, we sat down with Saeger for the story behind the success. Read it on SouthlakeStyle.com. CARROLL GOLF ALUMNA FINISHED SECOND AT AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP University of Houston Women’s Golf sophomore Maddy Rayner fell just short in the WTGA State Amateur Championship title match on August 7, according to YourHoustonNews.com. The former Dragon and Carroll Golf alumna competed at Waco’s Ridgewood Country Club. “I played really solid golf,” Rayner said. “All I could have done was had more of a steady short game while I was out there. I’ve been working really hard on my wedges and my putting to get myself improved. Hopefully next year when this rolls around again, I can find myself in the championship again.”

STEELERS SIGNED FORMER DRAGON GARRETT HARTLEY Former Carroll kicker Garrett Hartley, class of 2004, took his NFL career to the East Coast, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 11. Hartley has a Super Bowl ring from his time with the New Orleans Saints, along with fellow former Dragons Chase Daniel (now with the Chiefs) and Justin Drescher. The Steelers had an immediate need for a kicker, as regular starter Shaun Suisham was expected to miss the entire season with a torn ACL. Jay Feely and Alex Henery were also on the Steelers’ radar, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, but the team eventually went with Hartley. Steelers Depot reported the deal is a one-year contract at league minimum.

WESTLAKE ACADEMY HOSTED FUN FIRST-DAY-OFSCHOOL ACTIVITIES From movie stars strolling down the red carpet to a lively New Year’s party, Westlake Academy’s first day of school activities were a huge success, evident by smiles on the faces of students and staff as they participated in the fun. Teachers are using the Hollywood theme to share the policies and procedures in a fun way showing children their “role” in the script. They also have trophies for team-building activities. Mayor Laura Wheat said seeing all of the activities and smiles on student’s faces during the fun made it a truly memorial first day. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Wheat said in a press release. “This is just another reason why I’m so proud to be a part of Westlake Academy.”

Between Byron Nelson Parkway and Carroll Avenue is Zena Rucker Road, a street that’s not yet a thoroughfare thanks to its feisty, fearless namesake, whose property it will someday dissect. Meet the woman who is playing the development game by her own rules.
T
he iron gates to Zena Rucker’s home are rather unassuming. At least, they do a good job of concealing a large and awe-inspiring secret. Located south of La Paloma Road off Carroll Avenue, the entrance is probably one most people have passed by numerous times without paying any mind to what lies beyond it. But through those gates and at the end of a long paved lane is a piece of Southlake history that’s fast becoming as rare in this town as free-roaming longhorns. It’s called open land, and Rucker’s Mediterraneanstyle home sits on roughly 75 acres of it, part wooded and part agricultural. From her back porch, it’s easy to forget that there are subdivisions on either side (Timarron to the west and Winding Creek to the east), let alone the bustling retail scene along nearby Southlake Boulevard. Rucker can think of fewer things more enjoyable than sitting on this back patio watching airplanes fly in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and reflecting on a life that’s been so shaped by the airline industry. Rucker and her late husband, Bill, a pilot for American Airlines, bought their property in 1960, in part due to their love of flying and because they heard that a large airport [what is now DFW] was going to be built in the area. “Bill said, ‘Let’s find a place in the country, make a landing strip and get an airplane,’” recalls Rucker. At first they used the land as a getaway, but five years later they moved to the area full time, raising their three children here, and yes, flying small planes in and out from their grass runway.
27
Though the original house on the land was built just after the Civil War, the Ruckers realized the small structure would not suit their family. Their current home has evolved through the years from the home they first built. Additions including his-and-hers garages flank both sides of the home. On Bill’s side is a truck he bought a few years before he passed away nine years ago, as well as a 1929 Model A Ford that’s been kept in pristine condition. (Rucker uses the truck as needed, but finds it just as easy to zip through the tall grasses on her property in her Prius or her Yamaha four-wheeler.) Her home now is filled with memories and keepsakes, including statuary in the kitchen representing different civilizations throughout Mexican history. Rucker was born in Mexico—her father was an Irish-American from Tennessee and her mother was an Irish-Mexican—and came to the U.S. when she was nine. “I really love Mexican history,” Rucker admits. “It was my major in college.” She and Bill dubbed their home “La Hacienda,” meaning the ranch house, and created a replica of a gazebo from the village of El Fuerte, Mexico, near where she lived as a young child. Her and her late husband’s love of aviation is well represented inside as well. Items the former flight attendant and her husband collected from the faraway places they had the opportunity to visit are displayed throughout the house. “Because my husband and I were with the airlines and both of my sons [Mike and Dooley] are pilots, I have always felt loyal to American Airlines and the airline industry… It’s done so much to enhance my life,” says Rucker. “I’ve traveled, learned foreign languages and learned about other cultures.” Rucker had a short stint as a flight attendant for American Airlines and then became a teacher. She later
became the first woman to run a Z-Yamaha motorcycle dealership in Grapevine. Rucker then obtained her pilot’s license and opened a flight school in North Texas at a time when even seeing a female in the cockpit was a rarity. On the coffee table, next to books about the history of this area (including Unforgettable Grapevine Characters, in which she and her husband are included) is a copy of Feminists Who Changed America, dog-eared to the page featuring Rucker. “I pride myself on being a political activist and a feminist,” she says. Rucker has served on the board of the National Organization of Women and still supports numerous democratic causes. She recalls getting up early on many occasions to catch a morning flight to Washington D.C. so that she could march in demonstrations in the morning, visit her congressmen in the afternoon, then catch a night flight back home. And now, at an age when most people are slowing down, the octogenarian has become a real estate developer, somewhat of a reaction to the never-ending offers she gets from developers hoping she will sell her land. (Something she is not interested in doing, by the way.) She and her granddaughter and partner Jacqueline Craft have already developed one medical office complex on land she owns along Southlake Boulevard and have started construction on a second. They named their real estate development company Zelda LLC in memory of Bill, who used to tease Rucker by calling her a name hers was often confused with. “I love building and remodeling,” she says. “I like the smell of sawdust; it does something for my soul. It’s like I am creating something new and better.” Rucker still finds time to participate in hobbies, though, including gardening and cooking, often sharing recipes or dishes she has made with the friends and neighbors who frequently stop by to say hello. Despite grievous losses in her life, Rucker remains an optimist. She says, “I find myself in a very happy period in my life. I love my house, my family, my land, and I love what I am doing with the building and development.”

Flying High LINDA CLARK IS PROOF THAT SUCCESS AND SELFLESSNESS ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. By Amber Cline Photography by BluDoor Studios
C
orporate businesswoman and philanthropic leader, Linda Clark, has a dual identity. By day, she manages large projects for Southlake-based Sabre Corporation, the biggest travel technology company in the country employing approximately 9,000 people in 60 offices around the globe. In addition to her corporate responsibilities, however, Clark upholds another duty – one that’s just as important to her. She’s the Vice President of Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange (GRACE) in Grapevine. Clark, who attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a degree in industrial engineering from North Carolina A&T State University, started working for American Airlines in 1990. Over the next 20 years, Clark held various roles at the company, including Senior Manager of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery. Clark was in charge of enterprise IT projects for various business groups and was responsible for developing their Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) strategy. For the past four years, Clark has thrived as a Principal Program Manager at Sabre, which diverged from American Airlines in 2000. She recently moved to the Security and Risk Management division, which sometimes requires her to be sequestered to dissolve complex threats to data security. “We meet with people who are owners of systems, talk about risk, mitigate them, and then automate the process so we can give a report at the corporate level,” Clark says.
It’s a determination Clark has never shaken over her 25-year career – and those around her have noticed. In 2006, Clark received the American Airlines ITS Outstanding Employee Award for her steadfast commitment to both the company and to giving back. “I boohooed like a baby because I was totally surprised at the event,” she says. “The first thing the Senior VP, who was announcing the award, said to me was, ‘Your pictures are going to be so horrible!’ He was right. But I’ll never forget, as he was reading the letters that people had written about me… they were noticing things I didn’t realize people were noticing.” At GRACE, Clark focuses on helping the organization stay true to its mission: to serve people. She confers with other board members on matters relating to donations and beneficiaries. Clark also oversees various programs and events throughout the year. One of her favorites, the Christmas Cottage, provides a shop full of donated items where parents, using a point system, can pick out gifts to take home, wrap and give to their children. GRACE accepts donations for the event all year long and is always looking for volunteers. “Oftentimes, it’ll be a single parent or a parent who’s had medical issues that have gotten them into some financial binds,” Clark says. “But no matter what they’ve got going on, everyone deserves to give their child a Christmas gift.” Although GRACE provides much to those in need, Clark says it truly wouldn’t be possible without the generous community in which GRACE is located. Around 700 people, including local town leaders, businesspeople and citizens, participated last year in the annual GRACE Gala, the organization’s largest fundraising event. Packed with dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions, this year’s GRACE Gala on October 10 is expected to be bigger than ever. In addition to raising money that GRACE can draw from throughout the year, Clark says, “The Gala is a fun event that makes people want to participate even more.”
Giving Back Although her position at Sabre is a vital one, Clark takes her role with GRACE just as seriously. You may think balancing work and community involvement is tough, but it’s something Clark has seen modeled from an early age. Clark grew up in a close-knit family in Durham, North Carolina (where she attended Sunday school with the current U.S. Attorney General, Loretta Lynch). Her father was a school principal, her mother a registered nurse. Her mom instilled in her the drive to give back in whatever small way she could. “If I had clothes that I already used, my mother would make sure we’d give them to a relative who didn’t have as much or a friend at work who was struggling,” Clark says. “She’d make time – even having three kids and working. She made time to do things for other people.”
Knowing What’s Important When Clark isn’t discussing IT security threats or helping those in need, she concentrates on the three Fs: faith, friends and family. While she has no children of her own, she plays an active role in her niece, nephews and godchildren’s lives. She also serves at her local church, Cornerstone Baptist Church,

where she’s been a member since 2001. She recently started cycling with some friends and has set a personal goal to bike 50 miles. Her latest project? An ancestry photo book, a rigorous venture of creating documents upon documents of family lineage. But Clark has loved every minute of it – it reminds her what’s important. “I can hear of a name as I’m going through my ancestry and say, ‘I remember my mom telling me about an Aunt Janey and how much fun they had at her house,’” she says.
“That’s what lasts generations – your relationships.” It’s that mentality she tries to have as she begins each day. “I want to have a relationship with the people that work for me, with the people I work for and with my coworkers. Same with boards, family – that’s pervasive throughout all areas of my life.” With the GRACE Gala coming up and Sabre keeping her on her toes, Clark is in for a busy rest of the year. She says she’s in the process of learning how to say ‘no’ – “You’re not being mean; you’re setting healthy boundaries!” – and staying focused on what’s important. That, she says, is also her advice to young women entering the workforce – go after your goals and don’t mind what other people think. Oh, and always remember what your mother taught you. “One person really can make a difference, for good or for bad,” Clark says. “I’d like to be the person who makes a difference for good.”

Heather L. King MANAGING SHAREHOLDER KOONSFULLER FAMILY LAW My Motivation. Rock and roll music motivates me in just about every area of life! I also tend to be motivated by situations that create urgency, like looming deadlines or pressing legal questions. When this occurs, I work at my highest level and create some of my best and most successful work. Some might say I work best under stress, but I don’t consider such situations stressful; instead, I find them rather invigorating. And although I’m always exhausted at the end (you might even catch me complaining periodically), success usually comes before exhaustion. My Biggest Challenge. Losing my mother at age 49 gave me a new respect for all she was doing while I toiled away at law school, such as caring for my grandmother, brother and father. All of which my husband readily took over so that I could complete my education. Without his and his family’s help, I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career and my life.
When I am not working… I surf the Internet, watch movies, listen to music, read, relax at home with my husband, dogs and cats, and travel.

raditionally, wearing an envy-worthy timepiece has been reserved for the male community. Worn on the wrist of businessmen around the world, this wardrobe accessory knocks out its smartphone adversary at every meeting in which the question is asked, “Do you have the time?” But ladies, it’s your turn to chime in. The Link Diamond Dial with Roman Numeral Bezel (29mm) by TAG Heuer is the timepiece de resistance when it comes to what should adorn the wrist of a woman—whether she is wearing business heels or golf cleats. Since 1860, TAG Heuer has been known for revolutionizing the watchmaking industry. Providing a luxurious lifestyle accessory at a slightly less-than-Rolex price tag, the Swiss-made watch manufacturer gears its product toward a younger set of individuals. But don’t be fooled by the watchmaker’s mantra of affordable luxury with the Link. We’ve chosen to showcase an exquisite piece that leans toward the pricey end of the TAG Heuer line.
Clocking in at $22,550, the Link is polished 18-carat rose gold and dazzles with 11 diamonds—totaling 0.08 carats—on the dial. The faceted hour and minute hands have white luminescent markers, and the date is displayed at the six. There are 12 engraved Roman numerals on the bezel, which sits in a gleaming river stone-shaped case made from scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Now that we’ve whetted your appetite with the look of the watch—diamonds and a deep violet-hued face—we’re sure you’re sold. However, if you want to make certain your timepiece is more than eye-candy, let’s talk genuine Swiss quartz movement. The battery-operated timepiece is controlled by a quartz crystal that creates precise time accuracy—give or take a few seconds each month. There’s no need to worry about missing a meeting with clients or a teetime for that matter. If sailing is more your speed, you’ll be happy to know that the Link is also water resistant to 100 meters. Your watch is safe even with a splash of saltwater here or there. OCT 15 • 53

Leading Lady LAURA HILL HAS MADE HISTORY AS THE FIRST WOMAN MAYOR OF SOUTHLAKE. AND SHE’S JUST GETTING STARTED.

aura Hill is afraid that her three kids will think: “All Mom did was sit on the sofa all day.” It seems like an irrational fear coming from someone who just made history as Southlake’s first woman mayor. She’s been a civic leader for more than a decade, and she’s also a successful businesswoman; Hill is the co-owner of Downey Publishing and Texas Ice Cream. She has racked up numerous accolades, including her most recent achievement: the Dallas Business Journal’s Women in Business Award. Hill has hardly been laying low in her living room. And now, only a few months into her term as mayor, she’s focusing on creating the very best version of Southlake. Southlake Meets Its Mayor Though she has learned much from the city’s previous mayors, she’s not particularly concerned about how they did things. “It’s kind of like there’s a new sheriff in town. That’s how I feel,” Hill says. “I don’t ever ask how we’ve done it in the past. I always say, ‘Here’s how I think that would work better. Am I missing something?’” It all starts with sparking a conversation. Improving communication is one of Hill’s major goals for Southlake. “We have to keep up with the way citizens are getting information,” she says. This means moving away from over-communicating with e-mails and robocalls and transitioning into a more tech-savvy era. “We have great companies in this town with technology as their strong point. Why not partner with those companies?” says Hill. “I want to take communication to a new level.” Hill is already off to a good start. She has amassed thousands of followers on Facebook (Facebook.com/ LauraHillForSouthlake), Twitter (@laurakhill0404) and Instagram (@laurahill0404). And in case you’re wondering, she writes all her own posts. “I’m the first social media mayor in Southlake, so I have an obligation to communicate on a level that other mayors probably never experienced,” she says.
And that’s okay with her. She embraces the learning curve. “I have to continue doing my homework and communicating as best I can so that people understand not just what my goals are, but that I’m listening to them,” Hill says. In her first few months in office, she’s done plenty of listening – sometimes about topics that catch her off guard. “People think I’m a lot more knowledgeable about life just because I’m the mayor,” she laughs. “I’m surprised at some of the issues people want to discuss with me.” It’s a testament to how much the community trusts its new mayor. Hill recognizes that citizens have high hopes for her, but she doesn’t feel like she’s accomplished any impressive feat. “I feel like a lot is expected of me as the first woman mayor,” she says. “But Southlake has always been open to great leadership. I don’t think being a woman mattered at all.” The fact that she’s a woman (and a mom) has actually led to some fun community engagements that past mayors didn’t get to enjoy. Hill reads to toddlers at the library and finds herself “doing a lot of mom stuff,” as she puts it. Her kids, Maggie, Preston and Trent, are grown now, but she still has a heart for helping youth. Hill founded Students and Parents Against Risks to our Kids (SPARK) in 2007, and in 2011, she co-founded Students and Athletes Serving Others (SASO). SPARK is a support organization aimed at helping kids and parents “spark” conversations about difficult issues kids may be facing, and SASO offers philanthropic opportunities for parents and their high school-age children. Hill’s latest endeavor is Southlake Kids Interested in Leadership (SKIL), which kicks off this fall. “We’re going to combine smart businesspeople and city staff with smart youth, and bring these people to the table to solve an issue,” she says. “What I love about SKIL is that people can participate in solving a problem.”
according to Forbes. And it’s just minutes from Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport, the fourth busiest in the United States, and the eighth busiest in the world. Throw in a bustling retail scene and a world-class school district that has united the entire city under the Dragon name, and it’s easy to see why so many people want their own slice of Southlake. “There are people who come here from other countries and they could have lived anywhere,” she says. “We have this incredible quality of life here.” Though you might feel a slight sense of resentment at the influx of people moving to Southlake (more people means more traffic), Hill appreciates the new residents. “They know what they have here doesn’t exist in other places,” she says. “When I hear people complain about something, I just say, ‘This is the greatest place to raise a family.’ I can’t believe I’ve ended up in a town like this.” And when you consider Southlake’s growth, keep in mind that much of it comes from citizens investing in the community. Hill built and owns the Downey Publishing building, which is where she runs her business with her father, producing small, rural telephone directories for more than 14,000 customers. Nearby business owners live in Southlake and own their buildings as well. Even though much of the growth is homegrown, Hill is aware that the majority of residents don’t want Southlake to grow. “In a perfect world, we could say, ‘Stop. No more,’” she says. “But we cannot stop. It’s not the American way.” Instead of halting development, Hill is focused on creating the right kind of growth for Southlake – especially when it comes to 114. “We know what we don’t want 114 looking like, so we have to fight hard to get it looking the way Southlake envisioned it to be,” she says. “We have to consider what has already happened in the city and develop in a way that fits.”
’s t i , e m o r t o e F “ eg l i v ri .” p k a c ba e v gi
Growing Pains One of those problems is undoubtedly traffic. Southlake is growing, and with the growth comes some of the worst traffic congestion the city has ever experienced. Many roads are so clogged with cars that residents can barely get out of their neighborhoods. Southlake today is much different than how long-time residents – including Hill – remember it. “My dad is 84 and he’s upset that people like me came here in the 1990s and built on one acre. It used to be two acres,” Hill says. “But if you looked on a map, you knew what was going to happen. The secret wasn’t going to stay a secret.” Southlake is situated between two of the country’s fastest-growing cities: Dallas at No. 3 and Ft. Worth at No. 8,
A Community to Call Home Hill is committed to finishing out Southlake’s development keeping in mind what she and so many others value about the city: its hometown feel and unparalleled sense of community. “That’s what makes us special,” she says. “We’re all Dragons.”

Even though she no longer has kids in the school district, Hill is staying put – and so are many other residents. “There are many people like me who raised our children here and don’t intend on leaving,” she says. “I’ve lived in my house for 20 years and I’ll be in my house 20 more years.” Southlake is home. That’s why Hill has been so invested in her community, long before she became mayor. “My interest was always in city stuff and elections. I just kept getting more and more involved,” she says. “For me, it’s a privilege to give back.” But she doesn’t want anyone to be impressed with her. She gives the credit to her family and staff. “I have great people around me. I always have,” says Hill. She helps her husband, Joe, with the admin side of his business, Texas Ice Cream, which he started five years ago as a change of pace from corporate America. She also embraces the domestic side of life. Hill doesn’t have a housekeeper and enjoys keeping her house immaculate on her own. As for hobbies, Hill doesn’t really have any. She much prefers a cozy spot on the couch. Sometimes, all she wants to do is sit – despite what her kids might think.

PUTTING SOME BITE IN THE BATTLE Pattie Stebbins is leading the charge against breast cancer one bite at a time. Pattie Stebbins is not only a breast cancer survivor; she’s a leader in its prevention. As Chairman for Dine Out for the Cure, a program under the wing of Susan G. Komen,
If you can, share with our readers your history with Susan G. Komen. Thirteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. It was then I became more aware of Susan G. Komen. Since then I have participated in various Komen races around the United States.
What inspired you to get involved with Dine Out for the Cure? The Dine Out for the Cure is unique and different than the Race for the Cure. It will raise more awareness from surrounding families and individuals.
SS NEXT DOOR
local leader
Stebbins is giving Southlake residents a chance to help those who are fighting. During the month of October, participating restaurants in the area will donate some of their proceeds to Susan G. Komen and national breast cancer research. By simply eating at one of these restaurants during the event, each person can do their part in raising funds and awareness for breast cancer. Wife of the late Brian Stebbins, the founder of Southlake Town Square, Stebbins is excited to bring what was a successful event in the Ft. Worth area a little bit closer to home.
Tell me about your journey to becoming Chairman. I decided to become involved through a series of conversations with friends. Because I am a survivor and it’s in my own backyard, I feel honored they asked me.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in this role? One of the biggest challenges is going through the corporate channels to get them to sign on to participate.
What do you enjoy about leading the charge in Southlake? I really enjoy meeting other women who have a passion for fundraising and leading the cause for Komen.
This is the first year for the event in Southlake. What are you most excited about?
You’re involved in a number of philanthropic endeavors in the community. What drives you?
Creating awareness that 75 percent of all funds stay in the greater Ft. Worth community. The remaining 25 percent go to national research to find a cure.
How can the community get involved in Dine Out forthe Cure?
How large of a fundraiser is this for Komen? This is a new endeavor for Komen in Southlake. It was done for one day in Ft. Worth last year, and we are expanding in other communities in Tarrant County.

It is always great to see your work make a difference locally.
The community can get involved in the event by dining out at the participating restaurants. Their contributions will really make a difference. Visit KomenGreaterFortWorth. org to see a list of participating restaurants in Southlake.
What do you want the people of Southlake and surrounding areas to know about this event? We would like the people to know they have a chance to show that we are a caring community.

In Oak Cliff, just outside the trendy Bishop Arts District, lies a new gem – or should we say flower – called Pink Magnolia, serving upscale comfort food with a sassy twist. The month-old restaurant is a joint venture between two local ladies taking the Dallas food scene by storm – Chef Blythe Beck, an industry frontrunner and television sweetheart with fiery red hair and a spunky wit, and Casie Caldwell, an entrepreneur who started the successful rotating chef concept Kitchen LTO in Dallas. When Beck joined the Kitchen LTO team, Caldwell knew their collaboration couldn’t end with her rotation. “We were knocking it out of the park at LTO, and I joked with her that I was never going to let her go,” Caldwell says. So she didn’t. She knew Beck needed a restaurant to call her own. Plus, with names like Paula Deen and Bobby Flay asking Beck where her restaurant was, she too figured it was time to say,
“What if?” It wasn’t long before Pink Magnolia was born, and the duo opened its doors in September. The restaurant has already developed a reputation among Dallas foodies – not only due to the big names working behind the scenes, but for its exceptional cuisine. As seen on her show The Naughty Kitchen with Chef Blythe Beck, the chef infuses her “naughty philosophy” into every dish. “I cook with lots of love,” Beck says. “And, it just so happens that love at Pink Magnolia tastes like bacon, butter and booze!” While you’ll see plenty of the three B’s on the menu, you’ll find so much more. Starters include Lobster Jalapeño Hush Puppies with creole mustard aioli and Texas Lamb Chop Lollipops with chimichurri sauce and baby arugula. For your entrée, choose from options like Chicken Fried Ribeye with naughty creamed corn and braised mustard greens and Brown

Sugar “Mopped” Pork Porterhouse with apple sausage stuffing and sautéed green beans. Or, go for the Cayenne Garlic Shrimp & Grits for a classic dish with a kick. If that doesn’t have your mouth watering, wait until your eyes catch the dessert section – the Chocolate Fudge Waffle with peanut butter ice cream, chocolate ganache and seared bananas foster is a chef favorite. “I love making dishes that you recognize and that you remember – I just make them a little bit naughty. I never want people to have to use a dictionary to read my menu… I want people to feel comfortable and familiar,” Beck says. To drink, choose from Pink Magnolia’s extensive wine list, or try one of their inventive cocktails. In keeping with the southern comfort vibe, cocktails are simple, yet elevated, including lots of fruit. The “Blackberry on Rye” is made with Redemption Rye Whiskey, sweet red wine, lemon and muddled blackberries, plus ingredients like agave, housemade Angostura sugar cubes and even raspberry jam to stir in some sweetness. While the food is nostalgic of home cooking – the restaurant even encourages guests to submit family recipes on its website, from which Beck will choose a few to “sassify” each Sunday – the atmosphere takes a step toward modern and trendy. With bright green seat cushions, light wood floors and large open windows, Pink Magnolia creates an upscale, chic dining experience while maintaining the comfort factor. It’s a balance perhaps achieved through the two ladies’ distinct talents. “[Caldwell] is all about spreadsheets, lists and calendars, and I write recipes on beverage napkins, cardboard boxes and envelopes,” Beck says. Caldwell adds with a laugh, “I’m not the best cook. I’m the business side of the equation.” However different their day-to-day responsibilities may be, they’re on the exact same wavelength when it comes to the way they treat customers, even foregoing calling guests “customers” for the more familial “company.” “My first priority with my company is comfort,” Beck says. “Pink Magnolia is an extension of my home. I want them to come over often, I want them to come as they are, and I want to take care of them.” It’s an attitude epitomized by the restaurant’s name; the magnolia flower is the symbol of southern strength and hospitality. But “pink” carries significance too. Even sending her e-mail responses to us at Southlake Style in fuchsia font, Beck says pink is more than a color – it’s a way of life that involves finding the silver lining in every situation. “[Beck] is one of the most positive people I have ever met,” Caldwell says. “It’s simply how she lives her life and how she treats others. And, she makes me laugh harder than I’ve ever laughed. Getting to work alongside her is the best part about going to work.” She probably doesn’t complain about the exquisite food she’s surrounded by every day, either. Here at Southlake Style, we think the drive to Oak Cliff is worth it for just a taste. You may want to do an extra rep at the gym the next day, but splurging at Pink Magnolia feels like you’re enjoying life to the fullest. These two ladies surely are.

SPIN! NEAPOLITAN PIZZA 1586 E. Southlake Blvd. 817.416.7746 SpinPizza.com

If you have a penchant for pizza (and don’t we all?), you’ll want to try SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza. It turns spheres of dough into mouth-watering masterpieces. Each crispy, thin-crust pizza is packed with flavorful toppings that are anything but ordinary. This isn’t something you’d peel out of a cardboard box; this is the good stuff. This is gourmet pizza at its best. While you can certainly keep your pie selection simple, the toppings at SPIN! are too interesting to pass up. You can get everything from Verdure Arrosti (roasted veggies) to fig onion marmalade and crushed glazed pecans. No matter which toppings you choose, you can count on them being perfectly seasoned. “We use fresh herbs, which makes a huge difference,” says Chef Michael Smith. “We strive to season every single ingredient, and when it comes together in a pie, it’s the perfect blend. We call it ‘umami.’ It’s a fifth-taste thing the Japanese invented. Umami is something that’s inherently good.” The 12-inch pies are as large as a dinner plate, so bring your appetite. If you want to size down your pizza, go for the Mini Mia option. You get a six-inch pie with a side salad or cup of soup. That’s what we enjoyed when we stopped in for lunch. Everyone in our group sampled different salads and pizzas, and when it came to the pies, everyone agreed that the crust was a perfect balance of crispy and chewy. You can upgrade your crust to gluten-free or wholewheat, and you have two choices when it comes to sauces: a zesty red sauce and a white sauce, which is actually a roasted garlic olive oil glaze. As for the salads, the Sonoma was a standout. It’s made with spinach, grapes, raisins and goat cheese. Thin slices of apple were artfully arranged on top, along with a dollop of chopped, glazed pecans and a drizzle of Blood Orange vinaigrette. When it comes to beverages, there are many pizzaperfect pairings. Wines by the glass are rotated daily, or pick from a variety of craft beers or three sangria flavors: red, white or Blood Orange. Because every meal should conclude with a little dolce, we also treated ourselves to hand-scooped cups of premium gelato (there were several crave-worthy flavors on hand). The pistachio gelato was dense and creamy with hunks of cold, chewy pistachios interspersed throughout. Here at this fast-casual restaurant, you walk in, order your pizza, pay and grab a spot to enjoy your meal. The space is bright and lively, perfect for a weekday lunch or a weekend meal with your family. There’s something for everybody, though you can never go wrong with SPIN!’s specialty: handmade, artisan pizza.

is still owned and operated by its founders, the Cole brothers — George, David, Mike and Darrell — who opened their first location in Irving. Known for its thin-crust creations famously cut into rectangular slices, the restaurant offers many signature pizzas, including the staff’s special (grilled chicken, artichoke hearts and Roma tomatoes) and the carne classico (pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatballs, Canadian bacon and hamburger). All of i Fratelli’s dough — their own recipe — is handcrafted every day, and salad dressings are also made in-house. “They use real mushrooms, not canned, and have pepperoncini peppers,” says Tracy P., a reader who cast her vote for i Fratelli. However, the restaurant’s standout feature is definitely its fast, friendly and free delivery service. Take it from us when we say we had a very pleasant experience, from the timely delivery to the drivers’ hospitable demeanors and, of course, the hot pizza we immediately devoured upon arrival.

Mad for Mod Modmarket’s farm-fresh fare will have you hooked.
MODMARKET 1161 E. Southlake Blvd. Southlake 817.442.0123 Modmarket.com
72 •OCT 15
We’ve stopped into Modmarket for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (Sometimes on the same day.) You can never have too much of a good thing. At Modmarket, you get nutritious, farm-to-table foods that are prepared with whole, simple ingredients – no unpronounceable additives or hidden fillers. If you’re curious about how your food is prepared, just go to Modmarket.com and click on any ingredient to see sourcing information and recipe details. And if you want to know calorie count or grams of protein for each menu item, Modmarket prints these and other nutrition stats directly on your receipt. The transparency is refreshing, but you can’t feast on facts; you have to try the food. Let’s start with breakfast. Modmarket does the most important meal of the day right, offering up protein-packed breakfast plates, hearty egg sandwiches and 100-percent whole-grain waffles. The Market Scramble is a dish that makes us happy in the morning. It’s made with cage-free eggs, broccoli and caramelized onion with aged white cheddar melted on top. Breakfast potatoes and multigrain toast add some crunch to the meal. The waffles are also worthy of waking up early. They’re perfectly fluffy and could easily stand alone, but they’re also excellent dressed up with caramelized apple and pear compote, which is how we like to order them. Moving on to lunch and dinner, Modmarket serves an impressive array of salads. You have your choice of entrée size or half size (we always opt for the entrée portion), and you can order straight off the menu or customize by adding extras such as flank steak, organic tofu or herb-roasted chicken. One of our favorites is the Superfood – a hearty blend of spinach and kale topped with quinoa, feta, carrots, almonds, red grapes and champagne vinaigrette. For an extra boost of protein, we like to add the tofu, which has a pleasant crispiness to the edges. When you just want to sink your teeth into something, Modmarket offers a range of substantial sandwiches and pizza. The Basil Chicken sandwich is particularly satisfying. Provolone, arugula, red onions, tomatoes and juicy roasted chicken breast are tucked inside a chewy ciabatta bun. Modmarket serves its sandwiches with a single pickle spear, though you can add a bag of Pop Chips or a side salad for a small upcharge. There’s enough on Modmarket’s menu to please every taste bud and meet nearly every dietary requirement. But because this local fare is made with farm-fresh foods, the menu changes seasonally. If there’s a menu item you love, get it before it’s gone. Or, just come in and try a new fresh favorite for fall. We’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

Taylor’s in Town Get ready to shake it off with Taylor Swift.
A
T&T Stadium. Good luck finding a “Blank Space” in this crowd. She’s come a long way since releasing her self-titled debut album in 2006 at just 17 years old. She launched her career first as a country-singing sweetheart, but America has been able to watch her develop into so much more. Today at 25, Forbes magazine has ranked her as one of the “100 Most Powerful Women” in its 2015 list, and it’s not difficult to see why. Seven Grammy Awards. Twenty-two Billboard Music Awards. Eleven Country Music Association Awards. Eight Academy of Country Music Awards. And having sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, she’s already one of the best-selling artists of all time. Taylor Swift continues to evolve and has garnered even more fans along the way with the release of her fifth studio album, 1989, named after her birth year. Known for her personal lyrics, Swift cowrote every song on this album, but she has certainly made a switch from her classic country sound. Feel free to leave the cowboy boots at home for The 1989 World Tour, a pop-infused event that focuses on her most recent musical achievements. Bouncing from Tokyo to Sydney and everywhere in between, the tour offers audiences a fresh perspective at each new stop. Expect songs from Swift’s most recent album, along with hits like “Love Story,” lots of costume changes, incredible lighting and props and

high-energy fun for all ages. And if you’re a fan of surprises, look out for special guest appearances. So far the tour has seen acts like Walk the Moon, The Weeknd, Sam Hunt, Nick Jonas, Lorde and Andy Grammer take the stage, and there’s no telling who will join her in Arlington. One thing’s for sure – we can’t wait to find out.

otton Bowl Stadium. Crimson and cream versus burnt orange and white. Sooners versus Longhorns. Oklahoma versus Texas. Stoops versus Strong. The Red River Rivalry — or Shootout — or Showdown. Call it what you will, but everything remains the same – it’s been a game-changer every football season since it all began in 1900. Forget the rankings and whatever happened last year, because each time these Big 12 rivals hit the field, it’s anybody’s game. Following the trail of corny dogs and funnel cakes, fans from Norman and Austin pack the stands of Fair Park for a weekend of good-spirited banter that won’t stop until the clock runs out. The tradition continues this year, with the winning team taking home bragging rights, and of course, the coveted Golden Hat trophy. Sure, there have been shake-ups in the Big 12, but the OU/Texas rivalry runs deep. The air of anticipation weighs heavy on this epic battle, but that’s not to say there’s no camaraderie to be had here. Fans unite over beers, cotton candy and fair rides coming in and out of the game, and those without game-day tickets are welcomed to gather around the big screen outside of the stadium to cheer on their favorite team close by. And once the best team has won, the tears can dry quickly … because you can always count on doing it all over again next year.

How do Texas courts calculate child support? Every case is unique, but Texas courts in general follow certain statutory guidelines. Typically, one parent (the “obligor”) is ordered to pay child support, and the court then determines the obligor’s net financial resources (basically, income from various sources minus certain allowed deductions) up to a cap of $8,550 per month. The court will then calculate monthly child support based upon a percentage of the net resources. The guidelines call for child support of 20% of net resources for one child, with 5% added for each additional child, up to 40% total. The courts can depart from the guidelines where justified by the net resources of the obligor and the proven needs of the children.

Experience Bora Bora AN ISLAND VACATION LIKE NO OTHER.
L
eave your watches at home for this tropical vacation. Once you set foot on the white-sand beaches of Bora Bora, you’ll be on island time. But don’t be fooled by the postcard images you’ll send to envious friends; the beaches of Bora Bora are mostly man-made. The small island in the French Polynesia is known for its crystal clear, blue lagoons. These inlets are perfect for snorkeling, exploring or just swimming. And man-made or not, who doesn’t want to walk along the beaches day or night feeling the warm sand between their toes? If no vacation is complete without a quick trip to the city, the main island town of Viatape offers boutiques to—wait, have you seen the photos of the lagoons? Why were we mentioning leaving the beach?
Where to Stay If you are going to travel all the way to Bora Bora for the epitome of an island vacation, don’t just experience the blue lagoons, stay in an over-the-water bungalow at the Four Seasons Resort and Spa. Although beachfront villas are available, the bungalows allow for an experience unlike any other. Whether you are vacationing with family or taking a couple’s retreat, there’s a bungalow for you. Many offer a private plunge pool or at least private decks that allow for breathtaking views of Mount Otemanu. Each bungalow features traditional teak furnishings housed under roofs thatched with pandanus leaves. However, if you do opt for the beachfront villas, you won’t be taking a step down in luxury by any means, especially if you and your guests

decide to stay in the three-bedroom Otemanu luxury beachfront villa. This secluded villa is one-of-a-kind and perfect for families and groups. It includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms and a private swimming pool. Smaller party? As in party of two? The one-bedroom Deluxe Fenua beachfront villa with pool sits on a secluded white-sand beach. It includes its own enclosed garden with coconut trees and Tahitian gardenia trees. As if you weren’t relaxed enough lounging by the beach or over the lagoons, the spa at the Four Seasons offers additional opportunities for rest and restoration. You didn’t come all this way

What to Do Whatever your idea of vacationing on a tropical island looks like, you can make it happen on Bora Bora. From mountaintop experiences to lagoon snorkeling, there is something for any tourist who can pull themselves away from lounging on the white-sand beach. According to U.S. News & World Report Travel online, visiting Mount Otemanu is ranked No. 2 on the website’s list of best things to do in Bora Bora. The mountain is one of two dead volcanoes at the center of the island, rising 2,400 feet above the lagoon. Enjoy by land or air, whether you decide to hike, explore in a four-by-four, or partake in a helicopter tour. If you just can’t tear yourself away from the chaise lounge on your private deck, simply enjoy the otherworldly views of the Otemanu from afar. If you are eager to explore the wildlife off the island, a visit to the Lagoonarium Bora Bora is a must. This is a natural aquarium located on a small island east of the main island. This family-owned attraction allows for snorkeling on the premises. A variety of creatures

lie beneath the lagoon’s surface: sharks, turtles, rays and many different kinds of ocean fish. Select a half- or full-day adventure. Another locale to spot one of the ocean’s best menageries is the coral garden. Again, just a short swim or bike ride away from the main island, this inlet features a coral reef located just below the surface that allows for simply the use of snorkeling gear. Travel.USNews.com, Tahiti.com
Where to Eat You needn’t leave your bungalow to enjoy authentic Polynesian dishes. In-room dining means you are taking the island life as it’s meant to be—slow and relaxing. There are several dining options onsite at the Four Seasons Resort, including Arii Moana, which serves Polynesian and French traditional dishes featuring fresh seafood and meats. For a more casual atmosphere for dining, Tere Nui is an open-air restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The resort also has two bar and grills that serve both lunch and dinner. If you want to explore the flavors of Bora Bora a bit more, venture out to other parts of the island for additional authentic fare. Located at the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, the exclusive signature restaurant Lagoon by JeanGeorges features a French and Asian-infused menu created by chef JeanGeorges Vongerichten. What makes this experience even more delicious is dining in the open air with a clear view of Mount Otemanu at sunset. For a completely different atmosphere, visit Bloody Mary’s Bora Bora Restaurant and Bar to spice things up a bit. Established in 1979, this is a favorite among regular island visitors and locals. For lunch, enjoy sandwiches and burgers along with other local dishes. But for dinner, choose from the assortment of the day’s bounty. Whatever local fishermen catch, you get to eat, made to order. And if you happen to be traveling by yacht, no problem—Bloody Mary’s has a dock. FourSeasons. com/BoraBora, StRegisBoraBora.com, BloodyMarys.com

Ghoulish Gathering Guide EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO THROW A MONSTER BASH IN STYLE.
ODDS & ENDS
halloween By Amber Cline
With chilling movies on channel after channel and aisles at every store strewn with trampled costumes, Halloween is a tradition children anticipate all year long. But who says adults can’t get in on the excitement? This year, we’ve got you covered on how to throw a sophisticated and spooky soiree that’ll prove Halloween isn’t just for kids. THOUGHTFUL THEME The first thing to decide is what kind of party you want to throw. Costumes are a Halloween staple that adults often forego, but we say “boo” to that. With Pinterest overflowing with DIY costume ideas that require little more than a trip to Michael’s, it’s as easy as ever. One of our favorites is the DIY Frappuccino. Grab a tan dress, attach the Starbucks logo and glue a green straw to a headband. You’d be surprised how many costume piece essentials you may already own. While Halloween could be a theme on its own, a little creativity goes a long way when it comes to party planning. Try a “Boos and Booze” theme – or call it “Costumes and Cocktails” for a bit of added elegance – and allow guests to pick their poison out of a variety of themed alcoholic beverages. If you opt for a costume-less evening, you may want to go heavier on the decorations. However you decide to theme your fall festivity, make sure you clarify it on your invitation. DAUNTING DÉCOR Face it – it’s 2015, and Halloween décor hasn’t changed. Classic black and orange with pops of royal purple come out to play all month long. Although you’ll want to stay somewhat true to Halloween colors at your gathering, you don’t want your guests feeling like they just walked into the Halloween aisle at the grocery store. Opt instead for a chic Halloween look by using orange and silver instead of black. This year, save the crows, witches’ hats and skull decorations, and focus more on fall. Make a rustic sign by painting a festive word on a wooden canvas, and hang it using ribbons. Kirkland’s in Southlake sells a retro “Boo to Y’all” sign if you feel like adding a Texan twist to the mix. Pick up some fake pumpkins at Hobby Lobby and decorate them with paint or glitter to use as stylish centerpieces – or wrap them in gauze and attach some googly eyes for cute mummy pumpkin decorations. GHOULISH GOODIES The first thing to remember when it comes to Halloweenthemed food is not to get too crazy. If it looks gross, people won’t eat it. One idea we love that tones down the fright factor is mummy dogs, which are like pigs in a blanket, but with the dough twisted around the hot dog. Or, make some cute and easy Frankenstein marshmallow pops. First, skewer some jumbo marshmallows, then dip the whole marshmallow into green-dyed chocolate. Wait for that to dry and then dip just the tops in regular milk chocolate to make the hair. Add a face with icing and stick a pretzel stick through the “ears.” When it comes to alcoholic drinks, you can get a bit more jovial with the spook-factor. Simply add food coloring to your favorite cocktail and serve it in festive glassware. And if you really want to add to the menacing vibe, serve the drinks with dry ice – but be sure to learn the safety precautions first.
With these categories to keep in mind, you’ll be planning your Halloween soiree in no time. Now all that’s left is to pick a killer creepy playlist (think: “Zombie Jamboree,” “Monster Mash,” “Thriller,” etc.) and let the frightening festivities begin. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

On paper, this six-figure sports car appears to be five cylinders short—but when coupled with a high-voltage, lithium-ion battery and what the manufacturer calls “efficient dynamics,” this hybrid is turning heads like no other. The BMW i8, the second model unveiled from within the BMW i brand, has it all: power, luxury and unrealistic efficiency—all wrapped up with a futuristically frozen blue ribbon. Taking advantage of the latest BMW technologies in aerodynamic and lightweight yet performance-inspired design, drivers can choose from three distinct driving modes with the simple push of a button. For those who desire the sustainability of purely electric driving, the Comfort and Eco Pro modes do the trick and still maintain speeds as high as 75 mph. The third, and most exhilarating Sport mode maximizes both the 11-hp electric motor and the 1.5 liter, three-
cylinder combustion engine to unleash as much as 357-hp and top speeds over 150 mph. No matter the mode, the i8 always achieves a balance between dynamic performance and efficiency. Its battery can be recharged through the electric motor during deceleration or via the high-voltage starter/generator responsible for turning over the combustion engine. When talking about hybrids, efficiency is where the rubber meets the road, and while traveling under engine power, the i8 is rated at a modest 28 miles per gallon. However, when utilizing both electric and combustion power, the i8 scores big with an EPA efficiency rating of 76 MPGe (the distance the car can travel electrically on the same amount of energy as is contained in one gallon of gasoline). When talking about BMWs, elegance is also a factor and this BMW is no different. Admittedly so, it is easy to get wrapped up in what makes these particular wheels turn, but the futuristic styling both inside and out can turn some serious heads. Lighted ice-blue accents across copious amounts of carbon fiber and Carum grey leather help create a Tron-like atmosphere that for some will be worthy of its space-age price tag.
