DELIGHT IN THE GREAT BEAUTY
I
f you’re so enthralled with Italy that you want to take a bit of it home with you, rejoice! The possibilities of making this dream come true are boundless. With its artisanal ‘botteghe’, artists’ studios and enogastronomic specialties, Italy is a paradise for high-end purchases. Although each Italian city has legendary shopping streets (via Montenapoleone in Milan, via Tornabuoni in Florence, the Rialto district in Venice, and Piazza di Spagna in Rome…), each district, town or village also boasts small, surprising gems that will amaze you. International brands alternate with artisan shops: famous fashion and design labels in Milan; masks or glass objets d’art in Venice; jewelry, exquisite stationery, ceramics or straw baskets in Florence and, even, traditional nativity scene figurines in Naples. This is the perfect season to shop. In Italy, where the tradition of gift-giving is especially important, November and December are the shopping months par excellence. And even after New Year’s Eve has come and gone, the shopping frenzy continues. It’s at this point that the sales season, which promises bargains throughout the month of January, begins. Get started! Choose what piece of the ‘Great Beauty’ you’d like to bring back home.
“
I was offered a free villa in Hollywood, but I said no thank you, I prefer to live in Italy.

Art Up and down the Peninsula, between the Renaissance and the present time. While Leonardo da Vinci reigns supreme in Florence, contemporary art takes centre stage in Rome and Naples with a roster of impressive names or, for blockbuster exhibitions, there’s Van Dyck in Turin or Picasso in Milan.
MILAN PICASSO AND THE MINOTAUR This blockbuster exhibition focuses on an unusual aspect of the great contemporary master’s work – his relationship with myth and antiquity; the Minotaur, centaurs and fauns, war and passion. These are just a few of the themes illustrating the Spanish artist’s fascination with mythology and the representations of the classical world. The exhibition features 200 works including paintings by Picasso, plus works of ancient art, all of which deeply inspired and influenced him.

FLORENCE LEONARDO AND WATER Thirty-five years after it was first exhibited at Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio, Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester is now on show at the Uffizi Gallery. It is on loan from its current owner, Microsoft founder and well-known philanthropist, Bill Gates. The Codex, which Leonardo created between 1504 and 1508, is a collection of 72 sheets of paper featuring ingenious annotations and extraordinary drawings about the subject of water. The Codex Leicester comes to Florence as an extraordinarily significant preview of the exhibitions of Leonardo’s work and life that will take place next year all over the world, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of one of the most important and iconic figures in the history of art.

NAPLES COOL BRITANNIA Titled after a work by the ‘impertinent British duo’ Gilbert & George, this exhibition brings together a selection of 23 works exploring the wave of artistic renewal that swept through Great Britain in the late Eighties and early Nineties, and was known as the YBA (Young British Artists) movement. The show features the works of 16 young artists who broke with the older generation of artists and brazenly imposed totally innovative signs, messages and expressive codes on their art, beginning with their charismatic, irreverent and provocative leader Damien Hirst.

Photography Sarah Moon’s magical world is the subject of a double exhibition in Milan. A totally different world is that of illustrious photojournalist Ferdinando Scianna: his work, though sometimes abrasive, always reflects his curiosity about humanity. MILAN THE FANTASTICAL WORLD OF SARAH Sarah Moon (1941), alias Marielle Hadengue, a former French model turned photographer and filmmaker, has created a unique, unmistakable visual language; a dream-like world inhabited by images that are romantic, melancholy and ‘outside of time’. Milan pays tribute to her with two parallel exhibitions. The first at Armani/Silos features more than 170 small and large-scale images, in black and white and colour from the mid-1970s to 2018. The second, on show at the Fondazione Sozzani, includes an historical documentary about Lillian Bassman (‘There’s something about Lillian’, 2001) and a short film titled ‘Contacts’ (1995).

This major retrospective features portraits of several of his dearest friends including Leonardo Sciascia, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jorge Luis Borges, and traces 50 years of stories and reportage by the photographer, who is a member of Magnum Photos. Discovering the great beauty Beginning in the 16th century, it became fashionable for young European aristocrats to embark on a journey known as the ‘Grand Tour’. They travelled to Italy to learn everything that they could about its history, beauty and lifestyle. If you too are on a quest for beauty, here is our pick of several not-to-be missed stopovers…

The Imperial Forum, the Colosseum, the ‘Mouth of Truth’ and the Domus Aurea. The roots of Rome’s splendour can be found in the classical age, when the city was the centre of a vast empire that contributed to the spreading of incredibly advanced standards of civilization. The ancient ruins from that era are among the world’s bestloved and most sought-after tourist attractions. Likewise, especially between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Rome’s role as the capital of Christianity contributed to making it the centre of the artistic world with a concentration of artworks that was unrivaled elsewhere. Many of the world’s most celebrated artists were summoned by popes to come to Rome, where they left behind masterpieces of immeasurable beauty.

Venice, the floating city
With canals in the place of streets, and boats instead of cars, Venice is the city of a thousand bridges, spectacular facades and breathtaking views offering a dreamlike vision. An open-air museum lined on both sides by an array of exquisite palazzos whose foundations are immersed in the waters of the Lagoon. Venice’s Grand Canal is unique among all other thoroughfares both in terms of its length, width and architectural heritage. Lined with ‘palazzi’ – many in elegant Venetian-Gothic style – this great road of water is protected, like the rest of the city, by UNESCO since 1987. The best way to appreciate the matchless beauty of this city built on water is to traverse its four kilometers, from the Ponte della Libertà to Punta della Dogana.

An unexpected Milan
In 2016, Milan was ranked the number one tourist destination in Italy. Gone are the days of a flying visit, with just enough time for shopping before catching a cab to Malpensa airport. Considered one of the world’s leading hubs of business, fashion and design, today Milan is finally being given long overdue credit as a city of art and a place of cultural interest. In addition to the Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala and the Last Supper (absolute must-visits, in their own right), Milan is also home to numerous other attractions that make it much more than the puritanically work-obsessed city that it is often portrayed as. In Milan you'll find courtyards hidden behind entrance doors, masterpieces of architecture unexpectedly revealed amidst anonymous facades and public and private museums offering myriad treasures.

Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance
How can one describe a city which originated in the Renaissance in just a few words; a city that gave the world Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo, Raphael and Botticelli, and was also the place where the Gioconda was painted. Actually, it’s impossible! The only solution is to stand in line alongside the ten million visitors who flock to the city each year, to gaze in awe at the Duomo or Santa Croce, the masterpieces housed in the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio or Piazza della Signoria, Michelangelo’s David or Palazzo Pitti. It is really no surprise that the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since there is not one centimeter of the city that is not worthy visiting, we strongly suggest that you make time to lose yourself amidst its art and architecture, its history and its landscapes. There’s just one thing you need to remember: this is the place where Stendhal experienced what was later to become known as the Stendhal or Florence syndrome. Need we say more?
Home to many masterpieces of art and architecture, Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of “David” is preserved at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Florence. On the opposite page, the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most widely-visited museums in the world.
The Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest landmarks in the city. According to certain historic documents it was the only bridge spanning the Arno that the Germans, out of respect for its beauty, did not destroy during the Second World War. A jewel among jewels, it has been the street of jewelers since Renaissance times.

The mysterious charm of Turin
Photo: © Shutterstock.com
When we talk about the Piedmontese capital, the adjective we most often use is “sober”: though it has a refined and at times intense beauty, the city is in fact of a kind that loves to reveal itself slowly. Without the brazen sumptuousness of Rome and Florence or the fashionable touches of Milan, it nevertheless has avenues of rare elegance, precious architectures and perfectly formed piazzas. Perhaps it is precisely its reserved nature that has fed the renown it has gained associated with the occult, with Turin being considered a capital of esotericism. Located between the River Po and the Alpine Valleys, Turin has a two-thousand-year history. Doubly bound to the royal family of the Savoys, it was the first capital of Italy, a role from which it retains, among other things, a circuit of palaces that Versailles would envy. It also has the most important museum of Egyptian exhibits after that of Cairo, but the symbol of the city remains the Mole Antonelliana, today the site of the Museum of Cinema: for a long time this monumental building, built in the second half of the 19th century, was the tallest in Europe.
Photo: © Shutterstock.com
Surprising, captivating, grandiose, the Venaria Reale is one of the “palaces” surrounding Turin. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it holds some of the finest expressions of universal Baroque, absolute masterpieces of architecture, art and landscape.
Originally built in the 16th century on the banks of the River Po, in 1633, the Castle of Valentino underwent a major renovation based on a style that was clearly inspired by French castles. Since the second half of the 19th century, it has been surrounded by the magnificent Parco del Valentino, a favourite haunt of locals and visitors alike.

Italian style is priceless Many thousands of international travellers agree that the Italian shopping experience is the most gratifying in the world. Whether on the streets of the major cities, in the port at a sea location or on the edges of the ski slopes, in Italy it will always be possible to make highquality purchases. Indeed, all the luxury brands are there, many of which - incidentally - are of Italian origin, but there are also countless craftsman’s workshops and shops where you can discover the best of this country’s creativity and tradition.

isa Orologeria has been run by women since 1971, the year marking the death of its founder Ugo. Their passion and dedication for their work is key to the growth of the company which thanks to their involvement became a reference point for watch enthusiasts in search of impeccable quality and a relationship based on trust, professionalism and customized consultation, as Chiara Pisa, third generation heir and Managing Director of Pisa Orologeria explains. Based on its longstanding experience in the world of high-end watchmaking, Pisa took on a new challenge in 2018, and opened the ‘Salone dei Gioielli’, an area located on the second floor of the via Verri Flagship that is dedicated to jewelry. This airy, light-filled space reflects the inimitable style of the Pisa brand and is based on the criteria of understated elegance and painstaking attention to quality and detail. Circular wood and metal vitrines showcase creations by Boucheron, Chaumet, Chopard, Messika and Tamara Comolli, while a satellite space – the ‘Salotto de Grisogono’ – is dedicated to the jewelry of the eponymous Geneva-based maison. In addition to these brands, selected to satisfy the style requirements of its discerning female clientele, the ‘Salone dei Gioielli’ also features Pisa Diamanti, the result of Chiara Pisa and her mother Maristella’s desire to express their creative values in a jewelry line. To echo the words of Chiara Pisa, “It’s a new point of contact with our female clientele, to whom we have always dedicated particular attention, even in the realm of watches.” Clean-cut lines and minimalist settings are used to highlight the quality of the gemstones, and characterize the collection. Offerings at the ‘Salone dei Gioielli’ include rings and solitaires, tennis bracelets, earrings and diamonds studs, as well as diamond-studded cufflinks and chevalier rings for men, all based on the same aesthetic concept, guaranteeing that each creation is a unique piece.

A temple of good food Since 1883 Peck selects and produces the best eno-gastronomic products in the world. In addition to expanding and opening a branch at CityLife, it is getting ready to become an export brand under the new directorship of its young manager, Leone Marzotto. By Elena Binda
C
harcuterie, cheeses, readymade dishes, specialties, bread, fresh pasta, handpicked meats, tea, coffee, fruit, vegetables, wine, pastries and restaurants - Italy is synonymous with good food and Peck is ‘the’ place to experience it. Located in the historic heart of Milan, in via Spadari, a street that houses several of the most interesting addresses in the shadow of the Duomo, Peck has been turning out its delectable specialties for 135 years. What was once a ‘bottega’ has become an emporium that employs 150-person workforce, with a butchery, pastry shop, a space selling fruit and vegetables, workshops and three different restaurants for all times of the day: Piccolo Peck, Italian Bar and Al Peck. Peck was founded in 1883 and five families of entrepreneurs have taken on the mantle since then, all faithful to its rule of absolute quality. In 2011, the foundations for its most recent changeover were laid when Angelo Stoppani handed over the baton to Pietro Marzotto, a member of the textile dynasty which, with his help and leadership, acquired brands of the caliber of Valentino and Hugo Boss. Marzotto was also a connoisseur of good food and wine. Although Pietro died this year, the groundwork had been laid. “My father realized Peck’s potential as a company with unique qualities and as a high-end Italian food brand”, says his son Leone, Peck’s current managing director.

Thirty-three year-old Leone left his job as a lawyer to join his father in this new venture. “When you’re tasked with managing excellence, as I am at Peck, continuity is not enough. You need to aim at constant improvement. We can do this because we have the right vision and the resources to achieve it. The foundations are solid, the team is close-knit, and the pride in being a part of Peck is shared by everyone.” The new mission is embodied in the main shop in via Spadari which “boasts an increasingly rich offer of exceptional, unique and rare products” as its focal point “like the sun on our logo”. “The new Peck venues, which though smaller but equally prestigious in terms of quality” will revolve around it. Another key objective is to “establish relationships with new clients, and more regular relationships with long-distance clients.” Our first wager is the brand new Peck at CityLife, one of the ‘new hubs’ of Milan, where customers will find a selection of goods to purchase, a small wine and cocktail bar, and a restaurant offering a quick service at lunch, and a fabulous atmosphere at dinner, amidst green surroundings and distinctive architectural elements. Peck’s second branch in the city is likely to be followed by others, in a constellation that the CEO does not necessarily think will be limited nationally. However, for the time being, the rest of the world will continue to flock here daily to sample the marvels of this temple of gastronomy. If Leone could suggest a personal favorite, what option would he recommend? “Making a choice is almost impossible!” laughs Leone. “Today I would say our bresaola. We make it from the same meticulously selected meat that we sell at our butchery counter, and it involves an ageing process of 100 days. All of this takes place at our workshop located near the Duomo! If you don’t believe me come and see for yourself.”
THE COMPANY. A workforce of 120 people work at Peck, a number that has increased to almost 150 with CityLife. The via Spadari location is spread over a space of 4,000 square meters, of which one third is devoted to sales and eateries. The remainder is used to store raw ingredients, for product ageing processes and the actual physical processing of the food.
ALL FRESH. Approximately 5.5 tons of gastronomic products are produced daily at Peck.
BESTELLERS. Customer favourites at Peck include Russian salad, pâté, lobster and lasagna. Among the most widely requested dishes at its restaurants are risotto alla Milanese, breaded veal cutlets and renowned vitello tonnato.

Also known by the nickname Giuggiù, the Florentine designer has become a byword across the globe: her stunning creations have been showcased at several of the most important museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museo degli Argenti and the Museo del Costume in Florence. The creative heart of Angela Caputi’s bijoux is her workshop in Oltrarno (Florence), located in the picturesque district populated by artisans. Featuring a blend of art and fashion, her creations are characterized by a continuously evolving creative process. The combination of typical working techniques and the use of modern materials, including synthetic resins, makes these objects authentic expressions of contemporary art. Each piece is assembled by hand in full respect of tradition and the true concept of made-in-Italy craftsmanship.

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE This historic brand of artistic perfumery presents its sought-after collections inspired by the tradition of the Republic of Venice, its high-end craftsmanship and its centuries-old trade of essences with the East, re-imagined today in exclusive lines of contemporary fragrances. These lines, including the Murano and Nobil Homo collections, with their aromas and rare essences, are linked to the famous glass art of Murano. Boasting several locations in Venice, The Merchant of Venice has now brought its precious fragrances to Milan. Its new Milanese boutique is located in the heart of the city, in the picturesque Brera neighbourhood, which is gradually becoming the new ‘district of artistic perfumery’: an elegant treasure chest where, in addition to being seduced by the world of haute parfumerie, visitors will discover all the products of the brand.

Tax Free Refund Guide 1. VAT (in Italian: IVA) is a value added tax on goods and services, and is part of the European Union’s value added tax system. 2. In some cases, travellers may be granted a VAT refund. This refund does not cover the services supplied by hotels, restaurants, taxis or agencies. 3. You may be eligible for a VAT refund provided that: • you are a non-EU resident; • the goods purchased are intended for personal or family use only and are carried in your luggage; • the overall value of the goods purchased exceeds 154,94 Euro (VAT included); • the purchase is certified by an invoice. This invoice should include a description of the goods purchased, your personal information as well as the details of your passport or any other equivalent document; • the goods leave EU territory by the end of the third month after the month that you bought them; • several specific customs formalities are complied with; • the invoice is returned to the Italian retailer within four months after the purchase was made. 4. The goods purchased and the relevant invoice must be shown at the customs exit point when leaving EU territory (if you intend to pack the purchased items into your check-in luggage, you
52
must go to Customs BEFORE checking in). 5. After leaving EU territory, the traveller must return the original invoice, regularly endorsed by the customs office, to the Italian retailer. Said invoice must be returned within four months from the date when the document was issued. 6. The refund can be made directly by the Italian retailer (however, make sure that the shop you’ve chosen displays a “Tax Free Shopping” or “Euro Tax Free” sign in its window). 7. Several Tax-Free companies are able to offer immediate VAT cash refunds when the goods leave either Italian or EU territory (thus exonerating the passenger from having to return the invoice to the retailer). However, this procedure only applies at major international airports or main border crossings. Most major department stores have Tax Free Refund offices. 8. The services provided by Tax-Free companies imply the payment of a small administrative sum which is directly deducted from the amount of VAT refunded to the traveller. 9. In the event of a traveller not receiving a VAT refund within a reasonable period of time, he or she should re-contact the Italian retailer or one of the aforementioned companies. 10. However, please note, VAT cannot be refunded directly by customs offices. Source: www.agenziadoganemonopoli.gov.it/ portale/ee/citizen/vta-refund

Источник: www.agenziadoganemonopoli.gov.it/ portale/ee/citizen/vta-refund

Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia Via privata Raimondo Montecuccoli 6, Milano T: 02 416886 www.aimoenadia.com
‘C
arnaroli Gran Riserva’, a medium grain rice grown in Lombardy, is the only variety used to make this risotto. The oil is extra virgin made from green ‘Nocellara’ Sicilian olives, boasting an intense green colour, a fruity aroma, hints of tomato and artichoke, and an aftertaste of almonds. And what about the shrimp? In this recipe, the only acceptable variety is the purple San Remo species, from the seas of Liguria, renowned for its exquisite, delicate flesh. The result is a dish that is original and innovative and celebrates the best of Italian culinary tradition. It’s not surprising that this marvelous risotto is featured on the menu at ‘Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia’, a reference point on the Italian restaurant scene for the past 60 years. Since its inception, the restaurant has maintained its tradition of creating contemporary Italian cuisine. The focus has always been on excellence and respect for products, even when fashion dictated otherwise. At Aimo e Nadia you won’t find the caviar that was so popular in Milan in the eighties or today’s soughtafter sushi. What you will find are the best quality seasonal tomatoes, choice meats and impeccable cooking. “Here,” wrote a critic, “you don’t go to taste flamboyant dishes, you go to understand the meaning of good cuisine.”

Stefania Moroni, Alessandro Negrini, Fabio Pisani and the team of Il Luogo.
Located in Milan, Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia was founded by Tuscan husband and wife Aimo and Nadia MORONI, who shaped its history. Today, the kitchen is helmed by young chefs, Alessandro Negrini and Fabio Pisani, natives of Valtellina and Puglia respectively. Both of them matured and acquired experience under the paternal eye of Aimo until, with a combined age of 52, they were ready to take over the reins from its owners. They now have the honour of running a legendary kitchen that boasts two Michelin stars and is acclaimed by critics worldwide.
