M
ention Italy and a particular sort of effortless glamour comes immediately to mind. This was how the BBC summed up the inauguration of the exhibition dedicated to Italian style at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2014. At the time, the British media asked themselves whether this glamour “was real or just a nostalgic myth”. The hundreds of visitors, who flocked to the exhibition, and were awestruck by the exhibits on display, all agreed that if this is a myth, it is certainly an enduring one. As we know, Italy is a country of contradictions, at times chaotic and full of wellknown imperfections. And yet, it continues to be one of the world’s most envied countries for the quality of its lifestyle: food, fashion, art and culture. In a nutshell, its beauty is all-encompassing. Oscar Farinetti, the owner of Eataly has said for years: “Italy is a republic founded on beauty”. He adds that this should be used as the foundation for its constitution. Sociologists and analysts, intellectuals and fashion designers concur that Italy’s famous sense of style results from the fact that this beauty is part of everyday living for Italians, who take the scenery and capitals, Roman amphitheatres and 17th century facades for granted. For Italians, the co-existence of the Dolomites and Sardinia, the hills of Tuscany and the Valley of Temples, all in the same country, are a given.

esign and the Italian dream Does it still make sense to talk about Italian style in our globalized world? As Milan gets ready to resume its role as the planet’s capital of design, during its annual April extravaganza, several of the world’s most celebrated designers offer us their thoughts on the subject. |by Elena Binda
A
lthough the days when icons like the Vespa of the ‘Dolce Vita’ managed to evoke a bygone era, the style, referred to as ‘Italian’, still exists. Though it is difficult to define, this style is unmistakable. Italians’ familiarity with beauty and their aptitude for design stems from their rich history. This is the only place in the world where walking amongst Roman ruins and 15th century facades is considered normal. Architecture is an ever-present feature in Italy, and this boundless creativity dates back to Leonardo da Vinci. Not even the economic crisis managed to shatter this dream. In fact an intrinsic part of the national character is the ability to turn misfortune into an opportunity, to show creative inspiration in times of need. Design, described in a study conducted a few years ago by Silvana Annicchiarico, the director of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, is no exception. According to her study, certain revolutionary ideas of Italian design evolved “by transforming the constraints, constrictions and limitations generated by the crisis into opportunities.” Beauty is a part of Italian DNA “If I hadn’t been born in Milan, in a house designed by Piero Portaluppi, I don’t think I would have become a designer,” says Alessandro Mendini, a designer not known to mince his words. Mendini was born in 1931, and began making a name for himself in the 70’s due to his innovative aesthetic. Mendini was named a ‘Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’ in France, and has received numerous awards including a Golden Compass in

1979 and the 2014 European Prize for Architecture. His other achievements include the design of his Proust armchair, in addition to several other memorable objects for Alessi, Venini, Cartier, Swatch and Swarovski. Renowned 80 year-old architect Renzo Piano – a Pritzker Prize winner in 1998, the first Italian selected by TIME as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and the creator of Centre Pompidou in Paris, feels that he owes a lot to his hometown of Genoa, a bustling port city noted for its extraordinary architecture and glorious history. “I left home early, buoyed by that sense of adventure that appeals to seafarers; a sense of adventure that is also a necessary trait for architects”, says Piano. “I carry the beauty of my city inside me. A beauty that is linked to the lightness of everything suspended above the sea.” Strength, delicacy, lightness and rationality are the hallmark features of his work. “What inspires me about Milan is its forward-looking approach. In spite of hosting numerous works of art, it has difficulty in perceiving itself as a city of art, because it isn’t eager to embrace its past but is usually focused on the future, to what cannot yet be seen. It is not surprising that two of Milan’s most noteworthy events are its ‘Salone’ (Furniture Fair) and its fashion shows, events that attract visitors in search of new trends.” These are the words of Michele De Lucchi one of the world’s most sought-after contemporary designers, who chose to live in Milan after growing up in Ferrara and studying in Florence, while on the subject of being continuously surrounded by beauty. As the creator of several of the most symbolic

buildings of the new Milan, and the designer of numerous cult objects including the Tolomeo lamp for Artemide in 1986, his capacity to seize the moment is undisputed. In the ‘70s, just before turning 30, he founded Memphis in collaboration with his mentor Ettore Sottsass. This is a design group that revolutionized the concept of design in the ‘80s. Other hallmark traits of his work include his interaction with nature and his meticulous focus on artisanship. In search of livable environments Currently, the stars of Italian design are focusing on topics related to artisanal customization and the use of technology, both key trends at this year’s ‘Salone’ that aim to improve wellbeing. On the one hand, there’s the theme of sustainability, a respect for natural materials and the importance of craftsmanship and, on the other, the increasingly sophisticated use of technology. Instead of being in conflict with each other, these two aspects can be traced back to a single trend, whose focus is no longer on the iconic object, but on the requirements of everyday living. This concept, first described as ‘No Design’, was not intended as a rejection of design per se, but rather the search for an archetype, the ‘non-designed’, the essential. This is now defined as ‘anthropodesign’ or design for mankind. It is similar to that famous icon known as the ‘Vitruvian man’ by Leonardo… This approach, where Italian designers are concerned, is deeply rooted in the past. Today, it is expressed through an interest in
re-creating designs of the golden age, between the ‘60s and the ‘70s, and, at the same time, involves multiple approaches that can be defined as ‘wiki’. No-one is more aware of these founding principles than Matteo Thun. A three-time winner of the Golden Compass award, he was inducted into the New York Interior Hall of Fame in 2004, and is renowned for his ‘eco-residences’ and the objects that he designed for Artemide, Flos, Philips, Coca-Cola and Missoni. Today, the project dearest to his heart is called the ‘Matteo Thun Atelier’, a project established to nurture Italian artisanship and the art of customization, based on technology. Typical objects of Italian design, including chairs, vases or lamps, can be customized thanks to an online platform. Design for everyone is based on individual taste. The logic of customization is also the leitmotif of the events at the ‘Salone’. A visual and sensory experience called ‘DeLightFuL’ highlights new generations and their perception of domestic space: fluid and cross-sectional, poised between the public and private, between basic needs and new desires, to promote creativity. “The Millennials consider living spaces as temporary arrangements, capable of changing rapidly to meet new needs, requirements and life stages”, explain Simone Ciarmoli and Miguel Qued, the curators of the event. “The always-connected Millennials are the generation of ‘me’ and of social sharing. The new users of design seek personalization and reject standardization. They care about quality and have a concept of luxury associated with ‘experience and authenticity’.”

A QUEST FOR MINIMALISM Stefano Boeri poses next to a model of his ‘Bosco Verticale’, considered the “most beautiful skyscraper in the world” in 2015. Boeri describes it as “a house for trees inhabited by men”. This year, the architect designed his first collection of furnishings, including a ‘mettitutto’ for Annibale Colombo.
This same concept is endorsed by urban planner and architect Stefano Boeri. Named the designer of ‘the most beautiful and innovative skyscraper in the world’ by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in 2015, Boeri recently launched a capsule collection of furnishings in collaboration with Annibale Colombo. As his first project, Boeri chose to revisit a ‘mettitutto’, an item of furniture found in Italian homes since the XVII century. “In order to design domestic furniture, you need to focus on the unresolved spaces of daily living. Hence the reason for an eclectic and modular container designed to welcome us on our arrival at home”, explains Boeri. “Today there is a strong demand for authenticity and minimalism, which explains why we decided to concentrate primarily on the evolution of classic products, infusing them with a new energy.” The result is a natural wooden structure featuring a series of glass shelves and box-like containers designed to house smartphones and Ipads, personal mementos or plants, in a piece of furniture that can be customized to suit individual requirements. Beauty that stems from a dream However, it is important to note that the indefinable and unmistakable trademark of Italian design continues to have an enormous appeal throughout the world. In March, 50-year-old archistar Fabio Novembre, the most eclectic, controversial and worldly designer of his generation, was honoured in Tokyo with an important event titled ‘The black box’, while an exhibition, aptly named ‘Italian Beauty’, has just ended in Milan. Spread out over 1,200 square metres at Milan’s Triennale Design Museum, this exhibition explored the momentous career of

82-year-old Mario Bellini, an eight-time winner of the Golden Compass Award, and the pioneering editor of Italian design magazine Domus in the late 1980s. The exhibition was curated by an enthusiastic Deyan Sudjic, the director of the Design Museum in London, who pointed out that this show falls exactly thirty years after the historical retrospective dedicated to Bellini at MoMA in New York. No less noteworthy is the world of car manufacturers, an important design sector in its own right, where, for the past decade, Italy’s Ferraris and Maseratis have continued to hold sway. This year, at the Geneva Motor Show, Italdesign, founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (another legendary name in the field) presented a supercar in an ultra limited edition designed to make car enthusiasts dream. “Despite the presence of so many foreign designers in our companies catalogues, there still seems to be a common thread running through all of Alessi’s objects that makes them specifically Italian, a typical expression of our culture.” Thus wrote Alberto Alessi in a book published in 2016 that tells the story of a company that became one of the 20th century’s major design industries. “I think this thread consists of the cultural project that is the basis of our work. The project is largely implicit and was created over six decades, following encounters with several of the great masters of Italian design including Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Andrea Branzi and Aldo Rossi. These meetings, inspired by a reciprocal curiosity and, at times, by chance: chance in a manner of speaking, because during my career I have often had the impression that several of these encounters were written somewhere.” The book is called ‘The Dream Factory. Alessi since 1921’ - it is all so Italian.
Discovering the great beauty Beginning in the 16th century, it became fashionable for young European aristocrats to embark on a journey known as the ‘Grand Tour’. Rome “caput mundi”
Fifteen square kilometers and twenty-fivethousand attractions: Rome’s historic centre has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1980. A symbol among symbols and the most widely photographed monument in the world, the Colosseum is considered one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. The memory of its performances – gladiators, wild animals and naval battles re-enacted in the arena – have always fueled the fantasy of history and film buffs. However, unknown to most, its amphitheatre is also studied by botanists, who have isolated 350 species, several of inexplicable origin that grow spontaneously among its ruins. Unlike that phenomenon, everyone is aware of what happened to the 100,000 cubic metres of shining white marble that originally covered the Colosseum. They were ‘recycled’ to build several historic Roman buildings including the Basilica of St. Peter’s and Palazzo Barberini. From 8 March 2017 to 7 January 2018, a special exhibition will enlighten visitors about the history of the Colosseum. Documents and images will be displayed on the second floor of the Ambulacra.

Tuscany, the Italy that everyone dreams about

There’s Florence, boasting the magnificent works of Michelangelo and his marble statues. There’s Siena, with its unmistakable square. There’s San Gimignano with its sixteen towers and Pisa, whose one and only tower is unique throughout the world. Ultimately, there are Tuscany’s cities and art, its man-made artifacts and its vestiges of history. Above all, there’s the lyrical landscape with which Tuscany continues to enchant both Italians and foreigners. There are gently rolling hills, cypresses, sunflowers, narrow winding streets and stone houses scattered around the countryside. The Tuscan experience is bound to win over your heart. However, if you haven’t had your fill of marvels, stop at San Galgano, the abbey with the sky for a roof! Ah, the wonders of Tuscany! From 18 March to 30 June, the exhibition ‘The Good Century of Sienese Painting’ offers visitors an opportunity to discover 17th-century pictorial art in the beautiful towns of Montepulciano, San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza. Its three sections are connected by an itinerary that unfolds amidst churches and palazzi, immersed in some of Tuscany’s most breathtaking scenery.

Venice, the floating city
With canals in the place of streets, and boats instead of cars, Venice, the city of a thousand bridges, spectacular facades and breathtaking views, offers a dreamlike vision. This romantic city par excellence has a wealth of historic and artistic treasures that would be difficult to find in any country other than Italy. To enjoy them to the fullest, climb to the top of St. Mark’s bell tower, or the lesser known spiral staircase of Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, and let your gaze to wander over the lagoon.

In 2016, Milan was ranked the number one tourist destination in Italy. Gone are the days of a flying visit, with just enough time for shopping before catching a cab to Malpensa airport. Considered one of the world’s leading hubs of business, fashion and design, today Milan is finally being given long overdue credit as a city of art and a place of cultural interest. In addition to the Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala and The Last Supper (absolute must-visits, in their own right), Milan is also home to numerous other attractions that make it much more than the puritanically work-obsessed city that it is often portrayed as. In Milan you will find courtyards hidden behind entrance doors, masterpieces of architecture unexpectedly revealed amidst anonymous facades and public and private museums offering myriad treasures.

“See Naples and die” is an Italian saying of unknown origin. Believe it or not, all the clichés about Naples are true: it’s opulent, passionate, musical, contradictory, chaotic and neglected. People are friendly and ‘trained’ over the centuries to ‘get by’, for better or worse. And, yes, its pizza and coffee are the best in the world. Apropos of coffee, there’s a tradition that sums up the city better than a thousand words: the Neapolitans call it “caffè appeso” and it involves buying a coffee for yourself, and then purchasing another one for someone else who doesn’t have the money to pay for it. Naples is the ideal starting point to explore the other beauties of Italy: the islands of the archipelago, Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the Amalfi Coast infused with the scent of lemons. There is also Pompeii, the city, buried by layers of volcanic ash during the eruption of Vesuvius two thousand years ago, and one of the most incredible archaeological sites in the world. From 20 April, Pompeii’s Palestra Grande will host a special exhibition featuring relics that are not usually displayed and three audio-visual installations. A separate ticket is required.

The Italian ‘Lake district’: not only Clooney
Over the past few years, due to the influx of Hollywood celebrities, Lake Como has become the most famous of all the lakes. An almost uninterrupted sequence of villas, each with its own landing stage, decorates the banks of this idyllic lakeside resort. However, Northern Italy also has two other famous lakes that attract visitors from far and wide: Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda. The former is more tranquil and shadier, while the latter, so vast that it looks like a still sea, is more vibrant and windier. Its expanse of water and the diversity of the countryside make the area a real outdoor recreation ground. Como, Maggiore and Garda combine to form one of the most enchanting splashes of scenery in Northern Italy. Garda, in particular, is renowned for its fabulous citrus fruits and DOP olive oil.

Portofino, home to the ‘piazzetta’ and villas
With its narrow streets leading down to the sea, pastel-washed houses and crystal clear waters, Portofino is the ideal harbor. It is therefore no surprise that, since ancient times, this beautiful coastal village has been a highly soughtafter holiday destination. And, even now, with its ‘piazzetta’, Portofino is a reference point for international tourism. Although its hotels are astronomically priced, a drink by its yacht-filled harbor or a stroll around its designer shops can be easily enjoyed on a day trip. There are many anecdotes about the town which was used as film set for the Antonioni/ Wenders movie ‘Beyond the Clouds’. One in particular concerns Villa Altachiara. Its first owner, Lord Carnarvon, who financed the expedition that led to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, is said to have brought the ‘Curse of the Pharaoh’ upon himself. He died shortly after the tomb was opened and his villa became a site of sinister, inexplicable happenings…

Sicily: the Kingdom of Baroque
Caltagirone, Militello, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli: these are the names of Sicily’s magical Baroque towns. Protected by UNESCO, and located in south-eastern Sicily, they are sure to steal your heart and leave you awestruck. Although almost all of these towns existed during medieval times, they were razed to the ground by a devastating earthquake in 1693. However, this tragedy resulted in a miracle of beauty: architecture, urban planning and the ornamentation of buildings constitute the crowning achievement of one of the last periods of the flourishing Baroque movement in Europe. An absolute marvel! One of Sicily’s most popular tourist destinations, Taormina is renowned for its spectacular scenery and vibrant cultural life which revolves around its celebrated Teatro Greco. This year, on 26 and 27 May, Taormina is set to host the G7. During the launch press conference, the then Prime Minister Matteo Renzi explained why the government chose Taormina as the location for the meeting: “Taormina is the public answer to those who only associate Sicily with the mafia.”

Art The year ahead is looking in great artistic shape. The exhibitions in Milan and Rome are classical and important, those in Venice and Florence are contemporary and groundbreaking, while Naples invites us to visit Pompeii – but this time for Picasso. MILAN THE PAINTER OF VILLE LUMIÈRE Between 1850 and 1880, the face of Paris changed rapidly to become the ‘capital of capitals’, and the two Universal Expositions, held in 1855 and 1867, dramatically accelerated this change. Édouard Manet and his circle were there to capture the changing mood of 19th century Parisian life. The exhibition features masterpieces by Manet and his contemporaries on loan from the Musée d’Orsay.

ROME THE LIFE AND WORKS OF A NON-CONFORMIST An extraordinary woman and artist, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653) was one of the most unconventional personalities of her time. This exhibition explores her life through 100 works on loan from prestigious private collections and important museums and includes works by other artists who influenced her or were influenced by her. The exhibition’s five sections represent the different places she lived in: Rome, Florence and Naples, a brief interlude in Venice and a short, but intense period in London.

DELIGHT IN THE GREAT BEAUTY | SAVE THE DATE NAPLES A TRIBUTE TO PICASSO After travelling to Italy in 1917 with Jean Cocteau, while visiting Rome, Picasso fell in love with Olga, a Russian ballerina. The exhibition focuses on the legendary backdrop that Picasso created for ‘Parade’, the famed ballet created by Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. This backdrop, measuring 15 metres in length will be on display at the Capodimonte Museum together with an additional 68 works including paintings, drawings and sculptures.

VENICE AN INNOVATIVE, MYSTERIOUS HIRST This will be the first major solo show dedicated to British artist Damien Hirst in Italy since the 2004 retrospective at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. Damien Hirst’s first new body of works in several years will be unveiled in Venice on 9 April. The show, billed as “10 years in the making,” is also the first time the Pinault Collection’s two locations — the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana — will be dedicated to a single artist. At the artist’s express wish, the contents of this exhibition will remain a closely guarded secret until its opening.

The 57th Furniture Fair encompass 5 different shows including the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the Salone del Complemento d’Arredo, the bi-annual Euroluce and Workplace3.0 events and the Salone Satellite, dedicated to young designers. The international Art Exhibition in Venice is one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art in the world. The 2017 edition, curated by Christine Macel, will include 120 artists and 85 national participations at the historic pavilions at the Giardini, the Arsenale, and in the historic centre of Venice. The exhibition will be enhanced by several off-site events, organized by international bodies and institutions in the city.
Although ninety years have passed since the first edition in 1927, the Mille Miglia continues to be one of the best-loved car races both in Italy and abroad. This year, the cars participating (all built between 1927 and 1957) come from 41 countries across 5 continents. The 4 legs of the race will be held against the backdrop of Italy’s magical landscape, from Brescia to Rome and then back to Brescia, offering participants a fabulous combination of sport, history, nature and art.

When fabrics are masterpieces For three centuries the Bevilacqua family has handed down the art of weaving. Although its fabrics are still woven on 18th century looms, they can be ordered with an App. The (incredible) history of an establishment that could only exist in Venice.

n evocative and fascinating place; a form of craftsmanship that exemplifies artisanal skills and culture. This business combines managerial expertise and ancient savoir faire. These are all part of Tessitura Bevilacqua, an establishment that embodies the concept of Italian excellence to perfection. At its weaving workshops, located in Venice’s historic centre, meticulously trained artisans work on 18th century looms. The geometric or floral patterns that decorate velvets and brocades are not imitations of antique fabrics but the genuine article. All of the fabrics woven by the company are based on the original designs preserved in the family’s archives: a cultural patrimony that could easily be housed in a museum but which, instead, is applied to the everyday working of fabrics, based on the tradition of keeping the time-honoured heritage of artisanship alive. The origins of the business date back to the beginning of time and are interwoven with the age-old history of the city, with its tradition of artisans and merchants who crossed the seas, bringing back with them treasures that were appreciated world-wide. True works of art just waiting to be transformed into garments or accessories, curtains or furnishings, tapestries or stage costumes, Bevilacqua’s fabrics are also in great demand on international markets. Now as then, all the stages of the working process are executed by hand. These refined, hand woven fabrics are destined to decorate royal palaces, theatres and homes throughout the world. Its fabrics are so exquisite that even the ‘greats’ of fashion were unable to resist them. A year ago, at the design show in Milan, a collection of bags, the result of a collaboration between Bevilacqua and atelier Pizzinato, was presented for the first time. It goes without saying that, in this case as well, these creations were highlighted by their unique, whimsical flavour, serving as additional proof that weaving continues to be a contemporary art form that is capable of keeping pace with everchanging trends. In fact, rather than sacrificing any of its history, it continues to focus on new ways to enhance it. One such example is the Bevilacqua App. This App, which can be downloaded free-of-charge from iTunes, is designed to allow users to leaf through its catalogue and order a sample directly from their Iphone or Ipad.
