taly is often, and not by chance, referred to as an ‘openair’ museum. A well-deserved definition that refers to that mixture of art, nature, climate and lifestyle that is almost impossible to find anywhere else. This is Italy’s Great Beauty: an incredible variety of landscapes in a relatively small area, layer upon layer of history and art works with which it is almost impossible to compete. People may risk making the mistake of thinking that Italy is a place where everything has already happened, where our admiration is focused on the legacy of a glorious past, and where creativity is anchored in works that can only be viewed at museums. But there’s so much more. Italy is a hive of activity, a repository of beauty. New landscapes, both urban and rural, are continually created or reshaped, in an ongoing search to find the delicate balance between humanity's needs and environmental sustainability. Even today, art interacts with nature to create new ecosystems, giving life to unexpected places whose beauty though less classical is just as unique; hidden places, far removed from the tourist track, places that will amaze you with the highly innovative creative processes that have been used to shape them, despite problems, threats and often, an inability to protect them. And once again, we ask ourselves, does art imitate nature or nature art?

The Italian landscape is famous throughout the world. But if you think you know it think again: several unexpected places, where men and nature coexist, are hidden across the peninsula.

A PATH INSIDE THE FOREST In the forests of the Dolomites, where nature’s beauties abound, for over 30 years, the ‘Arte Sella’ project has interacted with the wood, creating innovative, seemingly enchanted scenarios.
S
ay ‘Italian landscape’ and a series of picture postcards instantly comes to mind: the hills of Chianti, the Cinque Terre, Capri’s Faraglioni, the banks of Lake Como, the vineyards of Piedmont and the Sardinian sea. Unique, magical places, that resulted from the union between nature and the heritage of an age-old history. In addition to the best-known Italian landscapes, those that travelers seek out, tourists love and inhabitants exhibit with pride, Italy also offers a number of other, more unexpected environments. Places shaped by a more recent history, examples of a new awareness in the dialogue between man and nature. Scattered from the North to the South, they are often located near more famous destinations, art cities, seaside or mountain resorts. In summer some are enlivened by events and festivals. Wherever they’re situated, they are definitely worth a visit and won’t disappoint. Here are our picks!

LANDSCAPE | ART

Italian Land Art ‘Land Art’ or ‘Earth Art’ is a movement that emerged in the United States in the 1960s. It involves using the natural landscape to create site-specific structures, art forms, and sculptures. One such example is the landscape of Borgo Valsugana, in Trentino Alto Adige, originating from the marvelous ‘Arte Sella’ project which was established in 1986 and continues today. Here, in the shadow of the Dolomites, numerous creations by artists from all over the world are scattered along a path inside a forest. These include the famous ‘Tree Cathedral’ by Giuliano Mauri and the ‘Leonardo Grid Dome’ by Rinus Roelofs. If you decide to take a ramble through the forest, you’ll be awestruck by this harmonious beauty. This project (www.artesella.it) is still very much alive and constantly enhanced with new additions. On 24 June, Villa Strobele will showcase Michele De Lucchi’s new work inspired by stacks of wood, while on 15 July, John Grade’s latest cloud-shaped installation will be displayed in a wood in Malga Costa: an unexpected ethereal mass that is interwoven with the branches of trees, under the sky of the Dolomites. One of the Arte Sella’s principal attractions is the ‘Tree Cathedral’ by Giuliano Mauri, a Lombard artist, known as the ‘wood weaver,’ who died in 2009. The work, resembling a Gothic cathedral, has trees for columns and the sky for a roof. A cathedral, that is not decorated with
marble or paintings but with snow in the winter and foliage in the autumn. This, together with over 30 other works, gives life to a truly enchanted wood, where shapes of fake animals interact with real animals, life-size nests offer shelter to wanderers, and wooden arches frame this marvel. In summer, concerts are held regularly in the park. There’s something for everyone! Another unusal place can be found near Perugia, just steps from the town of Tuoro sul Trasimeno. This area in central Italy is home to a classic mixture of everything that embodies the ‘Bel Paese’. There’s a medieval town overlooking a lake of volcanic origin; the Umbrian landscape with its blunt beauty; traces of ancient history and, finally, a project that, in the Eighties, led artists like Pietro Cascella, Cordelia Von Den Steinen and Mauro Berrettini to create a new, surprising landscape. Conceived in 1985, and completed over the next three years, the ‘Campo del Sole’ project was developed

LANDSCAPE | ART SCULPTURES AND TAROT No holds barred. You can embellish a forest of holm oaks with artworks like those featured in Chianti’s Sculpture Park lying north of Siena (left) or create a real ‘Tarotland’ like the one found in this garden in Capalbio (right).
to create an open-air sculpture park in an area that a few millennia ago (in 217 B.C. to be exact) was used as a battleground during the Punic Wars between the Romans and legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal. Known as the ‘Italian Stonehenge’, the place also conjures up thoughts of St. Francis of Assisi, who took refuge amongst its woods. If you happen to be in the area, this unique place is well worth a visit (www.umbriatourism.it).

The utopia of Gibellina Gibellina, a small city in the mountains of Sicily, in the province of Trapani, is far removed from the tourist track and deserves a special mention. In 1968, following a devastating earthquake, the original town was razed to the ground. The mayor at that time, Ludovico Carrao, had a brainwave. He enlisted several of the best-known contemporary artists to build a new Gibellina. Motivated by the knowledge that
destruction would not have the last word, the artists gave free rein to their talent, pursuing their dream of an ideal city embodying rebirth. Thanks to the support of intellectuals like Sciascia, Guttuso, Zavoli and Dolci, the artists and architects designed churches, buildings, squares and sculptures, reshaping the landscape and providing the town’s artisans, local businesses and those bereft, the earthquake-stricken citizens, with work and a future. This monumental experiment involved the participation of renowned artists including Quaroni, Uncini, Venezia, Consagra, Cascella, Mendini, Purini, Pomodoro, Schifano, Paladino, Simeti. Over the years, the Museum of Contemporary Art was enriched with as many as two thousand works. However, with the advent of different and new administrations, the town, an open-air museum, did not receive the recognition it deserved. In addition to the history of the New Gibellina, the city designed arbitrarily by the above mentioned artists, there’s the story of Alberto Burri, one of Italy’s most celebrated 20th century artists. On his arrival at New Gibellina, Burri explained that he did not feel comfortable with the idea of designing a work that would be part of a complex installation such as a new town, and was on the verge of refusing the invitation. Just before he left, Burri asked to see the ruins of the old town - situated at a distance of 11 kilometres from the new project.
It was during his visit there that a concept took form: his magnus opus would be created here. “A winding road, burnt by the sun, drew us down toward the inland where, after kilometers of desolate terrain, we reached a mass of ruins. I was really shocked. I almost wanted to cry and suddenly I had an idea,” explained Burri. Thus work on Burri’s ‘Cretto Bianco’ began: a white strata that covered and preserved the ruins. It was a huge mountain of cracked concrete (the word ‘cretto’ means ‘crack’ in Italian) that would become a fitting memorial to the Sicilian hill town of Gibellina, which was destroyed. The ‘Cretto’ became one of the largest and most poignant works of Italian Land Art, an awe-inspiring ‘site-specific’ work; a testimony to man's durability and creativity in the face of adversity. When the landscape is a masterpiece Numerous areas, where nature coexists with sculptures, installations and manmade works that create a magical atmosphere, can be found throughout the peninsula. The first on our list is Villa Panza, an 18th century mansion situated on the hills of Varese, where several of the greatest 20th century artists have created site-specific works (www.fondoambiente.it). Chianti’s Sculpture Park, near Siena, extends over 17 acres of land. Twenty-six

sculptures created by internationally renowned artists are skillfully positioned amidst woods and breathtaking views. These include Costas Varotsos’s glass and steel work resembling a tree, Federica Marangoni’s reimagining of a rainbow and Jeff Saward’s labyrinth (www.chiantisculpturepark.it). ‘Fattoria Celle’ an ancient villa, whose garden hosts the incredible Gori collection is found in Santomato, near Pistoia. It hosts a selection of fabulous permanent works by Burri, Oppenheim, Cecchini Plensa, Serra, Morris, Melotti, Castellani, Buren and Long (www.goricoll.it). In Pescia Fiorentina, in the heart of the Argentario, French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle has created a garden inhabited by Tarot card characters (www.giardinodeitarocchi.it). Not far from here, in the province of Grosseto, in the early 1990s, Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri created an outdoor sculpture site. The estate, which covers a surface area of approximately 16 hectares, features the work of 50 different artists (www.danielspoerri.org). As part of the foundation he established in 1978, Alberto Burri designed his own museum in his hometown of Città di Castello in Umbria, reshaping the area’s urban spaces with his works (www.fondazioneburri.org). Villa delle Meraviglie, also known as the Sacred Wood or Park of Monsters, is located on the slopes of Monte Cimino, in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio. This is one of the most unique landscapes in the world, anticipating Land Art by approximately four hundred years. Here, in the 16th century, Prince Orsini and the

architect Pirro Ligorio designed a wood featuring dozens of rocks sculpted with monsters, dragons, mythological figures and exotic animals, as well as fountains, obelisks and the leaning house which children adore. According to historical accounts, Goethe and Dalí, visited this place and were totally captivated by it (www.sacrobosco.it). In 2008, the founders of the ArtePollino project enlisted several artists to create outdoor site-specific installations in Basilicata, the region of Matera and its ‘stones’. These included Anish Kapoor’s 'Earth Cinema', Carsten Holler’s 'RB-Ride', a revolving carousel, precariously located on the top of a hill and Giuseppe Penone’s vegetable Theatre in which nature takes centre stage (www.artepollino.it). Finally, in Fiumara d’Arte, on the banks of the river Tusa in Sicily, visitors can admire a series of sculptures installed over the years (www.ateliersulmare.com). The most notable of these masterpieces includes the ‘Window over the Sea’, an installation designed to represent, praise and celebrate nature. This artwork invites viewers to pause for a moment and enjoy what man has created and what nature has given them as a gift. These new environments and landscapes give us a renewed awareness of nature.
Discovering the great beauty Beginning in the 16th century, it became fashionable for young European aristocrats to embark on a journey known as the ‘Grand Tour’. They travelled to Italy to learn everything that they could about its history, beauty and lifestyle. If you too are on a quest for beauty, here is our pick of several not-to-be missed stopovers…

Rome “caput mundi”
The Imperial Forum, the Colosseum, the ‘Mouth of Truth’ and the Domus Aurea. The roots of Rome’s splendour can be found in the classical age, when the city was the centre of a vast empire that contributed to the spreading of incredibly advanced standards of civilization. The ancient ruins from that era are among the world’s bestloved and most sought-after tourist attractions. Likewise, especially between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Rome’s role as the capital of Christianity contributed to making it the centre of the artistic world with a concentration of artworks that was unrivaled elsewhere. Many of the world’s most celebrated artists were summoned by popes to come to Rome, where they left behind masterpieces of immeasurable beauty.

Though less well-known than Venice or Florence, Mantua, a charming city situated in Northern Italy on the banks of the River Mincio, is packed with art treasures. Governed by the Gonzaga family for four centuries, from circa 1300 to 1700, this Lombard city experienced its maximum period of splendour during the Renaissance, when its most famous masterpieces were executed. A renowned patron of the arts, Isabella d’Este, the Marchesa of Mantua and the wife of Federico Gonzaga, summoned artists like Titian, Perugino, Leonardo da Vinci and Correggio to her court. Inspired by his mother’s passion for collecting art, Federico II invited Raphael’s pupil Giulio Romano to come to Mantua to build Palazzo Te, a dazzling example of 16th-century classicism. Even the layout of the city itself with its squares and palaces is truly delightful.

With canals in the place of streets, and boats instead of cars, Venice, the city of a thousand bridges, spectacular facades and breathtaking views, offers a dreamlike vision. This romantic city par excellence has a wealth of historic and artistic treasures that would be difficult to find in any country other than Italy. To enjoy them to the fullest, climb to the top of St. Mark’s bell tower, or the lesser known spiral staircase of Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, and let your gaze wander over the lagoon.

An unexpected Milan
In 2016, Milan was ranked the number one tourist destination in Italy. Gone are the days of a flying visit, with just enough time for shopping before catching a cab to Malpensa airport. Considered one of the world’s leading hubs of business, fashion and design, today Milan is finally being given long overdue credit as a city of art and a place of cultural interest. In addition to the Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala and the Last Supper (absolute must-visits, in their own right), Milan is also home to numerous other attractions that make it much more than the puritanically workobsessed city that it is often portrayed as. In Milan you'll find courtyards hidden behind entrance doors, masterpieces of architecture unexpectedly revealed amidst anonymous facades and public and private museums offering myriad treasures.

Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance
How can one describe a city which originated in the Renaissance in just a few words; a city that gave the world Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo, Raphael and Botticelli, and was also the place where the Gioconda was painted. Actually, it’s impossible! The only solution is to stand in line alongside the ten million visitors who flock to the city each year, to gaze in awe at the Duomo or Santa Croce, the masterpieces housed in the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio or Piazza della Signoria, Michelangelo’s David or Palazzo Pitti. It is really no surprise that the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since there is not one centimeter of the city that is not worthy visiting, we strongly suggest that you make time to lose yourself amidst its art and architecture, its history and its landscapes. There’s just one thing you need to remember: this is the place where Stendhal experienced what was later to become known as the Stendhal or Florence syndrome. Need we say more?
Home to many masterpieces of art and architecture, Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of “David” is preserved at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Florence. On the opposite page, the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most widely-visited museums in the world.
The Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest landmarks in the city. According to certain historic documents it was the only bridge spanning the Arno that the Germans, out of respect for its beauty, did not destroy during the Second World War. A jewel among jewels, it has been the street of jewelers since Renaissance times.

"Pasta must be served 'al dente'". According to the chef Antonino Cannavacciuolo, who was born near Gragnano (Naples), the world capital of dry pasta, cooking this ingredient properly is a moral duty. Boasting 2 Michelin stars and a ranking amongst the Top 100 Foodie Restaurants in Europe, forty-three-year-old Cannavacciuolo is the owner of the Villa Crespi restaurant in Orta San Giulio, on the shores of Lake Orta in Piedmont.

The poetry of Naples in a dish

It’s unanimous! Industry members agree that Pasta di Gragnano is ‘the’ pasta. Although its value as a ‘product of protected geographic indication’ was only recognized by the European Union in 2013, the tradition of Campanian pasta makers dates back to the 16th century. It remains firm when cooked and its deliciously porous texture means that it holds sauces better. Pasta di Gragnano comes in about forty different shapes including linguine, a close relative of Fettucine, which is made from long, flat strands of pasta, but thinner and narrower. The pasta’s particular shape means that it pairs perfectly with fish sauces, like this tantalizing recipe. The linguine is sautéed in a pan with fresh baby squid and then arranged on a rye bread sauce. And to enhance the flavour of the dish, not even the quality of the bottled mineral water (that not surprisingly occupies a significant part of Cannavacciuolo’s beverage list) is overlooked.

A bridge between the Langhe and China
Whether you’re dining at a private home, a restaurant or trattoria, the food in the Langhe is superb. Located in the centre of Piedmont, this region is renowned worldwide for its marvelous ingredients including Fassona beef, sweet Tonda Gentile hazelnuts, chestnuts, mushrooms, rare white Alba truffles, capon, rabbit, butter made from fresh cream, the ‘hunchbacked’ cardoons of Nizza, Jerusalem artichokes and white turnips. When the abundance of nature meets the creativity of a chef, the result is magical. In this recipe, Alta Langa potatoes are combined with quail eggs marinated for twelve hours in Lapsang Souchong, a rare variety of black Chinese tea recognized worldwide for its distinctive smoked flavour. The result is a highly original puree. In autumn, when in season, the dish is enhanced by the unmistakable aroma of shavings of white Alba truffles, generously sprinkled over the potato puree.

Variations on the dessert theme
There’s a dish wittily called ‘Ci pensi tu?’ (You take care of it) on the dessert menu of legendary chef Enrico “Chicco” Cerea. It’s a phrase that the chef must have heard hundreds of times from his guests. These people are usually only curious and not really indecisive. If they love desserts and know Cerea, especially given the chef’s reputation for experimentation and his talent for reinterpreting classics, they are probably just excited to see what he’ll come up with. One example is this cheesecake where raspberries are decomposed and recomposed into small iced spheres; broken up into a delicious pink crumble and newly re-presented as a fresh topping. At the base, you’ll find cheese and an unexpected layer of crunchy white chocolate. The cake is decorated with 23 carat gold leaves, repurposed for culinary use, proof that a dessert is like a jewel: gratifying, superfluous but unmissable.

THE LUXURY OF TAILOR-MADE CLOGS People with style don’t follow trends. This motto applies perfectly to Giovanni Forte, an artisanal shop located in the Tuscan seaside resort of Forte dei Marmi which has been creating timeless yet trendy handmade clogs since 1980. Wearing clogs, a typically Versilian tradition, became popular in the days when there were no walkways or gazebos on beaches meaning that it was necessary to protect your feet from the burning sand. Master clog maker Giovanni Lenzoni has continued this tradition by creating handcrafted clogs, sabot, flip flops, slippers and sandals for men, women and children using only natural materials. The new Milanese headquarters of Hublot, the watchmaking brand with an Italian-Swiss soul, has a 40-metre space in the heart of the fashion district, inside the Flagship Store of Pisa Orologeria. The Hublot boutique is located on the ground floor, with windows opening onto one of the most prestigious luxury shopping streets in the world, with direct access through the main door of the historical building that houses Pisa. The store is outfitted in an all-new modern and sophisticated concept where shades of grey and black dominate. Its cutting edge design recalls the Hublot boutique in New York, designed by well-known American architect, Peter Marino. Following the Hublot boutiques in Capri and Porto Cervo, this space in the ‘Quadrilatero’ is the third in Italy. At the Pisa Orologeria premises, Hublot has created a fascinating display that allows visitors to admire all of its current and historical models.
PATEK PHILIPPE BOUTIQUE BY PISA OROLOGERIA The Patek Philippe Boutique at Pisa Orologeria is a welcoming showroom, an intimate space that highlights the elegance and history of one of the most revered watch brands in the world. The project is inspired by the Art Déco period and the elegant, discreet design of the 1930s. The atmosphere of the Boutique is further enhanced by sought-after materials including pink Indian wood, ebony, Birdseye maple, alabaster and neutral leathers. The display space pays tribute to the partnership between Pisa Orologeria and Patek Philippe, a collaboration of mutual trust and respect that dates back to the ‘90s. Painstaking attention to architectural details and the choice of tasteful furnishings act as the perfect backdrop to the magnificent collections of the Geneva-based Maison.

Tax Free Refund Guide 1. VAT (in Italian: IVA) is a value added tax on goods and services, and is part of the European Union’s value added tax system. 2. In some cases, travellers may be granted a VAT refund. This refund does not cover the services supplied by hotels, restaurants, taxis or agencies. 3. You may be eligible for a VAT refund provided that: • you are a non-EU resident; • the goods purchased are intended for personal or family use only and are carried in your luggage; • the overall value of the goods purchased exceeds 154,94 Euro (VAT included); • the purchase is certified by an invoice. This invoice should include a description of the goods purchased, your personal information as well as the details of your passport or any other equivalent document; • the goods leave EU territory by the end of the third month after the month that you bought them; • several specific customs formalities are complied with; • the invoice is returned to the Italian retailer within four months after the purchase was made. 4. The goods purchased and the relevant invoice must be shown at the customs exit point when leaving EU territory (if you intend to pack the purchased items into your check-in luggage, you must go to Customs BEFORE checking in). 5. After leaving EU territory, the traveller must return the original invoice, regularly endorsed by the customs office, to the Italian retailer. Said invoice must be returned within four months from the date when the document was issued. 6. The refund can be made directly by the Italian retailer (however, make sure that the shop you’ve chosen displays a “Tax Free Shopping” or “Euro Tax Free” sign in its window). 7. Several Tax-Free companies are able to offer immediate VAT cash refunds when the goods leave either Italian or EU territory (thus exonerating the passenger from having to return the invoice to the retailer). However, this procedure only applies at major international airports or main border crossings. Most major department stores have Tax Free Refund offices. 8. The services provided by Tax-Free companies imply the payment of a small administrative sum which is directly deducted from the amount of VAT refunded to the traveller. 9. In the event of a traveller not receiving a VAT refund within a reasonable period of time, he or she should re-contact the Italian retailer or one of the aforementioned companies. 10. However, please note, VAT cannot be refunded directly by customs offices. Source: www.agenziadoganemonopoli.gov.it/ portale/ee/citizen/vta-refund

Art Contemporary art and intriguing locations are the star players of this issue, from Carsten Höller’s Slides in Florence to the ultra-trendy Prada Foundation in Milan and Venice’s Punta della Dogana.
FLORENCE ART MEETS SCIENCE AT PALAZZO STROZZI How strong is the symbiotic relationship between plants and humans? German artist Carsten Höller and Italian scientist Stefano Mancuso attempt to answer this question by creating ad hoc interactions in the spaces of Palazzo Strozzi. Thanks to different emotive experiences, like sliding down one of the two huge intertwined slides from the second floor of Palazzo Strozzi to the courtyard below, or viewing horror movies or comedies, the public can influence the growth of the plants covering the museum’s façade.

MILAN A NEW TOWER IN THE PRADA KINGDOM The inauguration of the tower marks the completion of the Milanese headquarters of the Prada Foundation designed by archistar Rem Koolhaas. Each of the nine levels of the Torre, the laconic name of this new building, offer a unique perspective of the building’s spaces thanks to their irregular floor plans, height and orientations. Six of the building’s floors host the 'Atlas' project featuring works from the Prada Collection by artists like Carla Accardi, Jeff Koons, Walter De Maria, Mona Hatoum, Edward Kienholz, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, Michael Heizer, Pino Pascali, William N. Copley, Damien Hirst, John Baldessari and Carsten Höller.

VENICE WHEN ARTISTS TALK ABOUT THEMSELVES The collective exhibition ‘Dancing with Myself’ curated by Martin Bethenod and Florian Ebner, has its origins in a collaboration between the Pinault Collection and the Folkwang Museum in Essen. The exhibition aims to explore the examination of self in artistic production between the 1970s and the present time. Photographs, videos, paintings, sculptures and installations, from diverse cultures and generations, describe the artists’ melancholia and humour, amongst political identities and existential reflections.

Alberto Burri, Acquaforte 7 (1977)
ROME THE POWER OF INVISIBILITY Due to his remarkable camouflage artwork, Liu Bolin has been defined as the ‘invisible man’. Using his own body as a canvas, painting himself into the background, Bolin creates scenes that are statements infused with powerful social messages. The retrospective at the Vittoriano explores his artistic career, from shots of 'Hiding in the City', in which Liu had himself painted to blend in with a variety of backgrounds all over Beijing, to the last section dedicated to the recurring theme of migrants: invisible men, whose bodies are all part of the same humanity, blend into the ochre-coloured sand of a beach in Sicily or with the blue backdrop of the European flag.

TURIN MASTERPIECES REBORN Italy features an abundance of masterpieces – either known or hidden – that require restoration and people or institutions that are willing to pay for this. For twenty years, the Banca Intesa Sanpaolo has committed, on a bi-annual basis, to restoring a nucleus of works that once completed are displayed for public viewing before being returned to their original venues. The latest restorations, numbering a total of 212 works, will be exhibited for the first time against the magnificent backdrop of the Reggia di Venaria. The works showcased include artifacts and paintings, sculptures and musical instruments ranging from antiquity to the present time, from Titian to Van Dyck and Burri.

Photography Turin and Milan offer viewers two contrasting projects. One explores photography as the interpretation of emotions, while the other portrays reality as it is, with all of its intrinsic poetry and beauty which should be learnt and recognized.

TURIN PHOTOGRAPHY AS AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE “When you look at my photographs, you’re looking at my thoughts”. Something between a photographer and a poet, Duane Michals has reenergized the language of photography with a new approach – superimpositions, double exposures, narrative sequences, long exposures, the manual incorporation of painting and graphics into his printed images – and new themes including emotional personal experiences, small, often surreal, human dramas, dreams, recollections and the human condition. The Turin-based exhibition is a vast retrospective divided into sections that identify the different expressive methods progressively invented by Michals.

MILAN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE After collaborating with Lotus International for almost a decade, renowned Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri introduced a new means of appreciating architecture, enabling the project to be understood in relation to the contradictory aspects of contemporary landscapes. The exhibition has gathered together an extensive selection of original photographs from the magazine’s archives, many of which have never been seen before in public.

Events Italy’s summer calendar offers a fabulous line-up of sizzling, historical events, that are renowned throughout the world. From the horses in Siena to Monza’s Formula 1 Grand Prix, each year these events attract thousands of enthusiastic spectators.
SIENA HORSES AND RIDERS The Palio of Siena, which resembles a form of medieval jousting, is an ancient competition between Siena’s ‘Contrade’, or districts. During the event, deeply honored by the people of Siena, ten horses and ten riders, representing 10 of the city’s ‘Contrade’, compete for the ‘Palio’, a banner of painted silk. The competition takes place in the beautiful Piazza del Campo. The horses must run three laps around the Campo in a fierce fight for a win. In this no-holds-barred race, lasting just over a minute, a horse can win even without its rider (this is very dangerous as jockeys ride without saddles and often fall off the horses’ sweaty backs).

VENICE THE NIGHT OF FIREWORKS Commemorating the city’s delivrance from the plague in the 16th century, the ‘Festa del Redentore’ or Feast of the Redeemer, is a religious holiday and spectacular event much loved by the people of Venice. For two days, during the third week in July, a bridge of boats, across the Giudecca Canal links the church with the banks of the Zattere in Dorsoduro, and hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes fill the Giudecca. In addition to regattas and parties throughout the city, the highlight of the event is the fireworks display, which lights up the entire basin of St. Marks on the Saturday evening.

MAROSTICA CHECKMATE! A chess game featuring live pieces (horses included) played against the backdrop of a magnificent castle during the second weekend of September every two years. The event takes place in Marostica (in the province of Vicenza) and is inspired by the story of two noblemen, Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, who, rather than engaging in a traditional duel, decided to compete for the love of the beautiful chatelaine Lionora in a game of chess.

MONZA THE MAGIC OF MONZA AND FERRARI’S HOME RACE Fasten your seat belt: it’s Formula 1 season in Monza. In September, Italy’s electrifying Grand Prix returns to the city’s historical National Autodrome, the ‘Temple of Speed’ that has hosted this spectacular event since 1992 and seen the participation of several of the world’s greatest racing drivers. Built in the park of Monza’s Villa Reale, this super-quick circuit features long straights, tight chicanes and high-speed curves, and is one of the season’s most popular races on the Formula 1 World Championships calendar.

Источник: www.agenziadoganemonopoli.gov.it/ portale/ee/citizen/vta-refund

DELIGHT IN THE GREAT BEAUTY | UNIQUE
Scent of a (Renaissance) woman There’s a place in Florence where you can still purchase perfumes worn by Caterina de’ Medici. It’s called Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella and it’s a place where monks have been concocting potions and cosmetics for almost eight hundred years. By Elena Binda
A
ntique apothecary bottles and perfume stills are displayed amidst imposing inlaid wood counters, Renaissance stuccoes and frescoes painted by Giotto’s students. Located just steps from the Basilica in the heart of Florence, Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is one of the most unique places in the world and well worth a visit. In addition to the stunning scenic backdrop, visitors can peruse, purchase, and test its extraordinary products, made with natural ingredients according to age-old techniques. In 2012, the Officina celebrated 400 years in business with festivities including the issue of a stamp that immediately became a collector’s item. However, the historic origins of the apothecary date back to 1221, when the Dominican friars settled in Florence and began cultivating medicinal herbs in the monastery gardens for cures, infusions, sweet-smelling unguents and balms for the monastery’s infirmary. When the Black Death arrived in Europe in the mid-14th century, wiping out 70% of Florence's population, the monks began making a rosewater distillate to alleviate plague sores. Since this ‘disinfectant’ was only
80
a palliative, traces of this invention found their way into the Italian language with the saying ‘una soluzione all’acqua di rose’ (‘a watereddown solution’), which refers to an initiative which lacks strength or is superficial. Products carrying the Santa Maria Novella brand are known and enjoyed worldwide. These include soaps and cosmetics, sought after by Europeans and Westerners alike, and the brand’s legendary Pot-pourri, a concoction of berries, leaves and flowers from the Tuscan hills is a firm favourite with Orientals. This must-visit destination has also captured the hearts of film directors; in the ‘Silence of the Lamb’s, Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, buys products from the Farmacia; in ‘007 Casino Royale’ Vesper, aka Eva Green, shows a bottle of Pomegranate Cologne. The turning point in the production of cosmetics occurred in the early 16th century thanks to Caterina de’ Medici, the daughter of Lorenzo II De' Medici, Duke of Urbino. To commemorate her marriage at age 14 to Henry II, the future king of France, the monks of Santa Maria Novella created a special perfume named Acqua Della Regina (Water of the Queen)
for her. Under Catherine’s patronage, the Farmacia’s reputation grew. Today the business is helmed by entrepreneur Eugenio Alphandery (below), the company’s manager, who says he was captivated by the Officina when, aged seven, he first crossed its threshold with his grandmother. In addition to Florence and the main Italian and European cities, the Santa Maria Novella brand is sold in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia.
