T
he most widely viewed landscape in history is California, and not because it’s actually the most visited place in the world, but because Charles O’Rear, a former National Geographic photographer, snapped this iconic picture, aptly titled ‘Bliss’, in 1996 along a California highway north of San Francisco. This photo was chosen by Bill Gates as a screen saver for all computers using Windows XP. This meant that for years it appeared on more than one billion PC computers throughout the world. It’s not a remarkable landscape, but it’s a perfect one: the soft lines of a hill are silhouetted against a clear blue sky dotted with a few clouds; it conveys an image that projects a sense of serenity but is not totally unreal. Happily, Italy also abounds in places like this, and there are many Italian landscapes that have become iconic, picture postcards imprinted on the public eye. These include the perfectly rounded curves of the Tuscan hills, dotted with cypresses, the skyline of the Dolomites, the barren landscape of the Murge, the rows of vineyards in Piedmont, the terraced slopes of Liguria, the banks of Lake Como and the sea of the Emerald Coast. However in Italy it’s not purely about the landscapes. Describing the ‘Italian paesaggio’(this is a term that unsurprisingly has no exact translation in other languages), means talking about the beauties of nature but also the works wrought by mankind. For twenty five centuries, foreign invaders – in ancient times the Phoenicians and the Greeks, the Arabs and the Normans, the ‘barbarians’ and the Romans and, more recently, the most powerful royal houses of Europe, have all left their mark on Italy.

The result is a ‘landscape’ where it is almost impossible to distinguish between art and nature, where the remains of temples and amphitheatres define the environment as do the sea and the earth, where the marble of a cathedral is as much a part of the urban fabric as its vegetation, where architecture has changed the landscape and, in turn, become the centerpiece of paintings which have made art history, in an endless amazing interplay. lways and forever, the Bel Paese
The variety and beauty of its ‘landscape’ is what makes Italy unique.This term is not always easily translatable but relates to the environment and the many ways in which man has transformed it, during its multi-faceted history. The result is a combination of nature and art that delights the eye and the heart.
I
taly takes up only 0.5% of the planet’s surface. So the impact it has on travelers across the world is thus totally out of proportion to its actual size. However, there are many reasons for this: the history of the Roman Empire, whose power made Italy the centre of the world for decades and its strategic position in the Mediterranean, which fostered Italy’s relationships with other countries, are only two of the many reasons. However, what makes this peninsula unique is its ‘territory’: its incomparable wealth of coastlines and mountains, lakes and plains, compressed by nature into the smallest of spaces, and then skillfully shaped by man using a variety of artistic techniques. Therefore, what we call ‘landscape’ is actually a convergence of hills and rows of cypresses planted by man, steep banks and cultivated vineyards, fertile areas transformed into cities and then decorated with marble, embellished with art and painted with colours that have made history. This is Italy. A poignant example of how a place can be blessed by both the climate and man’s ingenuity (which does not mean that everything is perfect…). On 14 March 2017, for the first time, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBACT) celebrated ‘National Landscape Day’, to raise awareness among citizens about issues linked to the protection of the landscape and remind people just how important it is to adopt a new, more insightful attitude to it, since the landscape is a

heritage that can only be protected through a network of public and private bodies, local agencies, associations, individuals and tourists visiting Italy. Cultural biodiversity Chefs, academics and entrepreneurs of the agri-food industry (including people like Slow Food’s Carlo Petrini and Eataly’s Oscar Farinetti) have made it a crusade, that emerged conceptually in the themes dealt with during Expo Milano 2015. Italy’s wealth lies in its biodiversity, which is expressed in 7,000 different species of edible vegetables, 1,200 indigenous grape varieties, five hundred olive cultivars and much more. This variety of agricultural products is matched by a similar diversity of landscapes, works of art and history. According to many this cultural biodiversity is truly the ‘Great Beauty’ of Italy. FAI, the Italian National Trust and the cultural body that protects the environment and its treasures, has catalogued several of Italy’s principal landscapes. There’s the hilly landscape of the Langhe in Piedmont and the even more famous one of Chianti, in Tuscany. The former, comprising soft, rolling hills, is famous

for its wines, truffles, hazelnuts and cheese. The latter, located between the provinces of Florence, Siena and Arezzo, is known throughout the world for the beauty of its countryside dotted with farmhouses, and a scattering of sacred Roman or Gothic buildings. The abbey of San Galgano, located just a few kilometers from Siena, is an almost perfect example of the marriage of art and nature. The ruins of a famous medieval church, of which only the outer walls have remained, have become a sort of stylized icon, of Gothic creativity. With only the sky for a roof, it is a place of universal devotion, where nature appears to rule, embellishing the area surrounding its ruins with an explosion of vibrant sunflower fields. The number of times that the Tuscan hills have ended up as part of a film are impossible to count and this, according to many, is the real Italian landscape. But there’s much more. Mountains of coral and floating cities There is the jagged, uneven mountainous landscape of the Dolomites, whose breathtaking rock formations

resemble a coral reef, which they actually are. Geologists have confirmed that, in the distant past, the Dolomites were surrounded by water. The Ligurian landscape, consisting of mountains plunging into the sea, cliff-hugging towns and plots of land transformed into terraces for farming purposes, with the surprises of the Gulf of the Poets or the Cinque Terre is also breathtaking, as is the lagoon landscape, inscribed en bloc on the World Heritage list, which includes Venice and its islands. An example, rightfully acknowledged throughout the world, of how man has used his ingenuity together with incredible feats of architecture to dominate and beautify an extraordinary geographical area without distorting it, by building a city on water and transforming it into a maritime power. Another spectacular area is the lacustrine landscape of Northern Italy, including the world-famous Lake Como, a basin of glacial origin, inhabited since the dawn of time, and now surrounded by some extraordinarily sumptuous villas, often graced with paradisical gardens. Its beauty has been immortalized on the silver screen and is a destination that continues to attract tourists from all over the world. The landscapes of central Italy, recently and tragically ravaged

by recurring earthquakes, have no need of an introduction. These include Umbria and Montefeltro, the Gran Sasso mountain range and the lentil fields of Castellucio di Norcia, known for their beautiful, brightly coloured blossoms. The coastal areas offer several picturesque views from the Tyrrhenian sea to the Adriatic. For example, the Argentario and the Conero Nature Park. The seas of the south And then there’s Southern Italy. The Amalfi Coast, lying south of Naples, with its towns (Amalfi, Ravello and Positano) and its neighbouring islands (Capri, Ischia and Procida), is an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape. It is scented with lemons, infused with folklore and blessed with several of the most unique archaeological sites in the world, including, first and foremost, Pompeii, the Roman city petrified by the volcanic eruption of 79 A.D. A little further down, we find the Murge and the Stones of Matera, where from the time of the Paleolithic era men created villages from the tufa stone, reclaiming and transforming this indefinably lunar landscape into something more civilized. Today, it resembles a nativity scene (it has often been used as a setting for several films to recreate the places where Jesus of Nazareth spent his life, including, most recently, Mel Gibson’s popular and widely disputed The Passion). Over the past few years, Salento, with its olives and dry stone walls, sea and ‘masserie’ (typical local farmhouses), has become a sought-after tourist destination. It is a warm, welcoming place that is well worth visiting. On the other side of the ‘Boot’, we find Calabria with the plateau of Sila. The area is renowned for its lush vegetation, abundant wildlife and wild, unspoilt scenery which is not found anywhere else in Italy. Here too, the sea is nearby and, despite being one of Italy’s least well-known regions, or possibly because of this, several of its beaches hold some delightful surprises in store for those visiting them. On the subject of beaches, we must mention Sardinia which has some of the dreamiest beaches, white sand, scalloped coves and crystalline water that you’ll ever find without leaving Europe. In this case, it’s not actually a question of places ‘just waiting to be discovered’ but instead is renowned for the beauty of its sea and, in summer, its beaches are packed to overflowing. However, it will not disappoint, especially when accessed by boat. Finally, there’s Sicily, another excellent example of Italy’s magnificent blend of nature and history, untamed beauty and art. It is not by chance that in the first edition of the ‘Landscape Day’ promoted by MiBACT, the landscape prize was awarded to the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of Temples of Agrigento which will represent Italy in the framework of the Landscape Award of the Council of Europe. The award, linked to a project of re-launch and protection,

embraces a unique area where the traces of Magna Grecia have become one with the rocks and vegetation of the area. In addition to its marvelous temples, the park hosts the socalled ‘vegetable patriarchs’, or species that have grown here since the dawn of time: olives, carob trees, myrtle, almonds and pistachio trees. An enthralling, enchanted place. Art landscapes As previously mentioned, in Italy, the exchange between nature and art has given marvelous results. Human art has shaped the landscape, making it unmistakable, while the distinct personality of the Italian landscape has ended up as the subject of art itself. In bygone days, the Romans painted landscapes to decorate the walls of their domi or houses (the most dazzling example is that of the mosaics of Villa Adriana in Tivoli). On the other hand, Early Christian art only considered nature from a symbolic point of view, meaning that we had to wait until the late medieval era to see a realistic representation of the landscape. It was at that point that Duccio di Buoninsegna, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Giotto and Cimabue arrived to move us with their narrative imagery. In the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci was the first artist

to invent the technique of linear perspective, giving life to the spectacular era known today as the Renaissance. The Baroque period saw a return to classic landscapes, where biblical and mythological figures were interspersed with a lush, realistic portrayal of nature. Then, in the 18th century, Canaletto’s ‘Vedutism’ finally focused on portraying cities which, during that time, became the destinations of the Grand Tour, the ‘voyage of initiation’ undertaken by young European intellectuals. Over time, it has become increasingly clear that Brunelleschi’s Dome in Florence, the Tower of Pisa, the Vatican walls and even Leonardo’s Last Supper or the Sistine Chapel are as much a part of the ‘Italian landscape’ as the sea and hills of Chianti. It is here, where generations of conquerors have left their mark, that art appears to be a product of the earth, and is by now indistinguishable from the fruits of the soil.
Discovering the great beauty Beginning in the 16th century, it became fashionable for young European aristocrats to embark on a journey known as the ‘Grand Tour’. They travelled to Italy to learn everything that they could about its history, beauty and lifestyle. If you too are on a quest for beauty, here is our pick of several not-to-be missed stopovers…

Rome “caput mundi”
Fifteen square kilometers and twenty-fivethousand attractions: Rome’s historic centre has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1980. A symbol among symbols and the most widely photographed monument in the world, the Colosseum is considered one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. The memory of its performances – gladiators, wild animals and naval battles re-enacted in the arena – have always fueled the fantasy of history and film buffs. However, unknown to most, its amphitheatre is also studied by botanists, who have isolated 350 species, several of inexplicable origin that grow spontaneously among its ruins. Unlike that phenomenon, everyone is aware of what happened to the 100,000 cubic metres of shining white marble that originally covered the Colosseum. They were ‘recycled’ to build several historic Roman buildings including the Basilica of St. Peter’s and Palazzo Barberini.

Naples and then...

“See Naples and die” is an Italian saying of unknown origin. Believe it or not, all the clichés about Naples are true: it’s opulent, passionate, musical, contradictory, chaotic and neglected. People are friendly and ‘trained’ over the centuries to ‘get by’, for better or worse. And, yes, its pizza and coffee are the best in the world. Apropos of coffee, there’s a tradition that sums up the city better than a thousand words: the Neapolitans call it “caffè appeso” and it involves buying a coffee for yourself, and then purchasing another one for someone else who doesn’t have the money to pay for it. Naples is the ideal starting point to explore the other beauties of Italy: the islands of the archipelago, Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the Amalfi Coast infused with the scent of lemons. There is also Pompeii, the city, buried by layers of volcanic ash during the eruption of Vesuvius two thousand years ago, and one of the most incredible archaeological sites in the world.

Venice, the floating city
With canals in the place of streets, and boats instead of cars, Venice, the city of a thousand bridges, spectacular facades and breathtaking views, offers a dreamlike vision. This romantic city par excellence has a wealth of historic and artistic treasures that would be difficult to find in any country other than Italy. To enjoy them to the fullest, climb to the top of St. Mark’s bell tower, or the lesser known spiral staircase of Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, and let your gaze wander over the lagoon.

In 2016, Milan was ranked the number one tourist destination in Italy. Gone are the days of a flying visit, with just enough time for shopping before catching a cab to Malpensa airport. Considered one of the world’s leading hubs of business, fashion and design, today Milan is finally being given long overdue credit as a city of art and a place of cultural interest. In addition to the Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala and The Last Supper (absolute must-visits, in their own right), Milan is also home to numerous other attractions that make it much more than the puritanically work-obsessed city that it is often portrayed as. In Milan you will find courtyards hidden behind entrance doors, masterpieces of architecture unexpectedly revealed amidst anonymous facades and public and private museums offering myriad treasures.

Forte dei Marmi: the sea of Tuscany
In addition to being the birthplace of a queen (Paola Ruffo of Calabria, the Queen Consort of Belgium until 2013), Forte dei Marmi is the jet-set paradise of Versilia, on the coast of northern Tuscany. It is here that the majority of the area’s most fashionable seaside resorts are located. The summer getaway for the rich and famous including financiers, big names in sports and showbiz celebrities, Forte dei Marmi was founded in 1788 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo I of Lorraine who commissioned the building of a ‘fort’ to defend the shipment of the precious marble quarried from the nearby town of Carrara, thus making it an important crossroads for trade. The town is also a mecca of luxury shopping.

Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance
How can one describe a city which originated in the Renaissance in just a few words; a city that gave the world Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo, Raphael and Botticelli, and was also the place where the Gioconda was painted. Actually, it’s impossible! The only solution is to stand in line alongside the ten million visitors who flock to the city each year, to gaze in awe at the Duomo or Santa Croce, the masterpieces housed in the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio or Piazza della Signoria, Michelangelo’s David or Palazzo Pitti. It is really no surprise that the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since there is not one centimeter of the city that is not worthy visiting, we strongly suggest that you make time to lose yourself amidst its art and architecture, its history and its landscapes. VENICE THE INNOVATIVE, MYSTERIOUS HIRST The first major solo exhibition dedicated to British artist Damien Hirst in Italy is an innovative project that involves both of the Pinault Foundation’s exhibition spaces. Billed as ’10 years in the making’, expressly at the artist’s wish, the contents of the exhibition were kept under wraps until the opening. Visitors are greeted by a bizarre, ambiguous world, huge sculptures and collections of precious artifacts, dredged up from the depths of the ocean to generate questions and create disbelief.

FONTANELLATO ART IN A LABYRINTH Carlo Mattioli is one of the most interesting names in 20th-century Italian art, and the Labirinto della Masone pays tribute to him with an exhibition featuring 60 works spanning 30 years of the artist’s career (1961-1993). This exhibition is accompanied by a fringe event at Parma’s Palatina Library titled ‘Nella pagina e nello spazio. Mattioli illustratore e scenografo’. This exhibition explores the stratification and sometimes contradictory relationships between the cultures of the ancient Italic peoples, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans that crisscrossed its history; a journey to discover the many souls of an ancient city and its multiple identities. The exhibition features 600 artifacts, including ceramics, ornaments, weapons, architectural elements and sculptures, on loan from major national and European museums.

The competition takes place in the beautiful Piazza del Campo. The horses must run three laps around the Campo in a fierce fight for a win. In this no-holds-barred race, lasting just over a minute, a horse can win even without its rider (this is very dangerous as jockeys ride without saddles and often fall off the horses’ sweaty backs).

амый популярный в мире пейзаж находится в Калифорнии. Он популярен совсем не потому, что физически является самым посещаемым, а благодаря
фотографии, сделанной в 1996 году Чарльзом О’Риром, который тогда работал для National Geographic и запечатлел его в момент «экстаза» (так называется эта фотография). Here you can find maps and globes from a bygone era, but also prints, luxury stationery, ex libris and other sought-after items. f you’ve ever looked at a 16th-century map, you’ll remember the emotions that this aroused! The colours, title blocks and types of paper used conjure up a feeling of awe. This is the same emotion you have when admiring an antique print capturing views of a city two centuries ago. If you’re a fan of these things, and happen to be passing through Milan, make sure to plan a visit to Pettinaroli. In 1881, Francesco Pettinaroli moved to Milan from his hometown of Lago d’Orta. He opened a stationer’s shop with adjoining printing works, and a bookbinding workshop just steps from the Duomo. This soon became a cult address. Impressed by his meticulous workmanship and the quality of his paper, the Milanese began flocking to his shop for all their print requirements: birth announcements, invitations, wedding invitations, business and private letterheads and all types of calling cards. The shop continued to grow and the history of the family began to be intertwined with that of Milan. In addition to the theatre programs for La Scala, the Pettinaroli archives captured the changing face of the city with continually updated views of Milan, while each of the owners, over four generations, gradually added their own personal touch by focusing

on and excelling in different and equally important aspects of the business: typography, collaborations with artisans for the production of exclusive items, premium quality paper and an increasingly prestigious collection of prints and frames. Today the business is run by Francesco Pettinaroli. Named after his grandfather, who founded the establishment, Francesco specializes in antique prints, a passion that has made him one of the world’s leading experts on the subject. His personal favourites are the prints of mountains. In April, 2017, “after 130 years spent in the shadow of the Madonnina”, the shop, which still retains its original charm, has relocated
to Brera, the artistic heart of the city. The décor, including the shop’s original antique furniture and lamps, has been enhanced with a few contemporary touches. On entering the establishment, in addition to the a wide selection of maps and globes, customers will find an assortment of exclusive Italian handcrafted leather and paper items. The jewel in the crown of the new location in via Brera is the magnificent collection of prints lining the wall at the back of the shop.
