ilan is dressed to kill as it gets ready to welcome the world to Expo Milano 2015 with a plethora of events that will literally take your breath away. Held on the evening of 30 April, the inaugural event dedicated to the Maison’s milestone birthday, was hosted by none other than Giorgio Armani: 40 years of Italian excellence, impeccable artisanal tradition, unparalleled flair, quality and peerless style. In addition to the runway show, guests were also treated to a concert by revered tenor Andrea Bocelli, another example of Italian tradition known and loved throughout the world. On Friday 1 May, Expo, offering a global perspective on food, officially opened its doors to the public, in a bid to encourage a constructive debate on the universal theme of food and nutrition. In addition to Giorgio Armani, the patriarch of Italian fashion, ‘Milan Luxury’ will offer readers an exclusive feature on Chef Ambassador Moreno Cedroni, whose gastronomic innovations have won him countless awards and inspired food lovers around the world. Invited, like his other colleagues, to add an ingredient to the fabulous menu of Expo, Cedroni has opted for one of the most noble: extra virgin olive oil, a component synonymous with tradition and richness. A valuable addition, that adds a touch of class (and health) to every Italian dish, encompassing all things Mediterranean in just one culinary gesture. A bastion of peasant tradition, dating back to the earliest Mediterranean civilizations, the sacred aspects of oil are recognized in all cultures. Called liquid gold by many throughout history, oil is a priceless commodity and a symbol: it establishes a bond, it brings harmony. As with its fashion, its works of art and its endearing qualities, when it comes to oil, Italy boasts more richness and variety than any other country. It all comes together in Milan during this late spring season.

DELICATE, INTENSE OR SPICY? “If I need a spicy, slightly piquant oil, I get it in Umbria; for something slightly more delicate, Liguria or Lake Garda. If I need an oil with a particularly intense flavour, then Sicily is my place of choice”, says Cedroni. In Italy, it’s not just about ‘oil’ but a fantastic range of oils. The Maestro’s favourite is ‘Raggia’, harvested and pressed within 12 hours, producing a slightly bitter-spicy oil, boasting hints of artichoke and almonds. It can be used in a thousand different raw fish recipes: freshly served “gioco del tonno” (left) and below one of his famous white tuna preserves.

oreno Cedroni says that his first food memory is “the scent of garlic frying in olive oil”. This probably explains why, this two-Michelin-star chef, acclaimed by the Wall Street Journal as one of the ten best seafood cooks in the world, when asked to add his ingredient to the Expo extravaganza, went directly to his origins, opting for olive oil, rather than choosing sublime white tuna or raw Amberjack. Because, he admits, you can cook without fish, but “without olive oil I would be totally lost” … we have a quality and variety that makes us the envy of the whole world”, and because, “simply by dipping bread in olive oil you can create a sumptuous meal, something you can only pull off in Italy.” Fifty-one-year-old Cedroni is the former enfant terrible of Italian cuisine: original and experimental but also ironic and unpredictable. After opening his restaurant La Madonnina del Pescatore in Senigallia (Ancona), in the eighties, he infused the Italian gastronomic scene with a breath of fresh air. Though he has always been an innovator, he swears that his whole attitude changed in the nineties when he first met legendary Catalan chef Ferran Adrià, who “taught all of us never to impose any limitations in the kitchen”. Cedroni still looks back with the emotion to the time “that Adrià served me Parmesan ice cream as a first course when I first interned for him”, titillating his taste buds and triggering a new desire for research. Now that he is a famed international Chef, Cedroni has by no means stopped experimenting: provided that innovation is based on the solid foundations of Italy’s rich culinary tradition. It therefore comes as no surprise that this Chef from the Marches is renowned for having invented “susci”, i.e. sushi upgraded with a Mediterranean twist. “I adore raw fish and I have always been fascinated by Japanese technique”, explains Cedroni, “but I found that the structured approach to making sushi did not do justice to our wide variety of Mediterranean fish. I believe that each fish deserves its own recipe: so I began creating alternatives.” He managed to come up with a new, wholly personal method of preparing raw fish, firmly rooted in the history of Italian cuisine. His favourite? Raw Amberjack served with a leek and lemon sauce, garnished with violets and basil. Tradition and versatility create an inspirational result. “All of this is perfectly represented by extra virgin olive oil, one of the oldest and most sacred but also one of the most versatile ingredients of Mediterranean culture. I use olive oil in all my fish recipes but also in any other dish that I happen to invent.”

Cedroni does not hesitate to define olive oil as “a valuable asset”, justified, among other things, by its ancient history. In fact, all Mediterranean civilizations considered the olive as a gift from the gods and its oil, revered for its multiple functions, as a bridge between the human and the divine. For this reason the Chef is proud to offer it as his contribution to Expo: “I am proud to be a part of the team of Ambassadors”, he says. “It’s a milestone in my career because the eyes of the world will be trained upon me. Extra virgin olive oil testifies to the best of our gastronomic and agricultural offerings, their tradition and evolution: it’s all a question of flavours, aromas, taste and a healthy diet. We should not forget that foreigners visit Italy for its history, its culture and its landscapes, but also for its cuisine: olive oil represents the beauty and bounty of our country.

Moreno Cedroni was born in 1964 in Ancona, one of Italy’s major ports on the Adriatic coast. Cedroni opened his first restaurant, La Madonnina del Pescatore in 1984. He is famous for having invented ‘susci’, sushi upgraded with a Mediterranean twist. In 2000, he opened the Clandestino Susci Bar in Portonovo and, in 2003, Anikò, the world’s first ‘fish charcuterie’ in the town of Senigallia. He produces gourmet preserves at his ‘Officina’. The winner of numerous international awards, he is a Chef Ambassador of Expo.

and eccentric, the light fluctuates in accordance with the aromas and flavours emanating from its evocative open-plan kitchen (try the VIP room); on the other hand, the elegant atmosphere of the restaurant at Bulgari Hotel Milano is ideal to savour the cuisine of chef Roberto Di Pinto, accompanied by several of the best vintage wines. If you’re looking for a splurge, the Armani/ Ristorante, located in the city’s famed Quadrilatero is the place to go: a gourmand haven renowned not only for its delectable creations but also for its aperitivi. In the Brera district, just steps from the magnificent Accademia, Palazzo Parigi’s Ristorante Gastronomico offers an elegant, deluxe atmosphere featuring haute cuisine built on Italian tradition; while the Ristorante Gallia, at the recently refurbished Excelsior Hotel Gallia, tempts diners in with a gourmet menu focusing on prime-quality ingredients. And, at the same time, imagine a street, or rather an entire district, fronted by small thematic restaurants or pop-up kiosks, where you can grab a piadina, a slice of fragrant pizza or a cone of fried fish. To begin to comprehend its breadth, you would need to embark on an ‘Italian Journey’ worthy of Goethe. On the other hand, you could try Eataly, which has gathered all these Italian marvels in a series of concept stores that are enjoying enormous success throughout the world.

The brainchild of 61-year-old entrepreneur Oscar Farinetti, Eataly is not just a chain of shops nor a conglomerate of restaurants, but rather a philosophy based on a different approach to food, and consequently, to life. Its formula (high-quality products, meticulous attention to producers and a joyful celebration of the Italian culture of food) has caught on in a big way in Milan. This is why, for the entire duration of Expo, in addition to two urban sales points (Eataly Smeraldo in piazza XXV Aprile and the one headquartered at The Brian&Barry Building, in piazza San Babila), Eataly will have another, hugely important space. For those wishing to sample their specialties in-house, the store offers an interesting array of ‘small restaurants’: there’s a coffee corner, a gelato corner, a chocolate corner and a pastry corner. The venue also hosts ‘just’ pasta, ‘just’ meat and ‘just’ fish eateries as well as a vegetarian area serving soups.

There’s a small informal cold cuts and cheese restaurant, plus a few wholly Italian gems: fried food, piadine and, obviously, pizza. But that’s not’s all. The top floor of Eataly Smeraldo hosts Alice, a starred restaurant where chef Viviana Varese delights diners with her famous menu. The Eataly pavilion at Expo will embrace a different philosophy focusing on biodiversity which Farinetti considers the real source of Italian gastronomic excellence. Its space, extending over 12,000 square metres, plus an additional 4,000 comprising a garden/vegetable patch, will be used to house 20 restaurants dedicated to regional cuisine. Here, for the duration of the 6-month event, several of the best Italian restaurateurs will take turns at titillating the palates of diners with their seasonal menus. The formula will include 80 different dishes each month as well as 100 types of wine, including full-bodied table wines and Italian bubbly. There will also be no lack of delectable thematic corners: from coffee to beer, Parmesan cheese to Parma ham, spumante to Nutella without forgetting pizzas and piadinas: two signature classics of Italian food, to be eaten at any time of the day.

Liquid gold: all the oil of Eataly At the massive Eataly market you can purchase more than 60 varieties of olive oil, strictly extra-virgin, to explore the abundance of Italian cultivars. You will also find some highly original offerings (including pistachio or truffle oil) as well as a selection of Mediterranean preserves (i.e. preserved in oil), from tuna to tomatoes. But let’s not forget that oil is also central to the art of frying. In fact, Eataly Smeraldo boasts a small restaurant dedicated entirely to fried specialties. The name speaks for itself: Giorgio Armani is the king of fashion, an entrepreneur and a patriarch of style, renowned throughout the world. Expo has justly appointed him a ‘Special Ambassador’ because over the past 40 years he has fed the world with ideas, revolutionizing the images of both men and women

iorgio Armani SpA was founded in 1975, with an investment of approximately 10,000 dollars, part of which was raised by selling Armani’s old Volkswagen. During its first year, turnover accounted for more than one million dollars. Its success was the result of the talent of Giorgio Armani, who was 40 years old at the time and had already been noticed, as well as the courage, “entrepreneurship and daring” of Sergio Galeotti, a 29-year-old publicist who had entrepreneurial skills that far exceeded expectations. In the space of just a few years, the two of them, fifty-fifty shareholders, friends, but also partners in business and life, rose to the Olympus of fashion. The Armani name became their trademark, thanks to the intuition of Galeotti. In 1984, a sudden illness resulted in Galeotti’s untimely death which left Armani so

bereaved that he actually thought of abandoning the whole project. However, at that point, the legend had already been consolidated, and its history was irreversible. Fashion wasn’t his first career choice. Armani studied medicine for three years and completed his military service before deciding it was clothes, not bandages, that were his calling. It was then that this passion, that had always lain dormant, emerged. His approach to elegance was acquired as a child, when his mother Maria made clothes for Giorgio and his siblings, “clothes that were so well made that they gave the impression that we were rich even though we were actually very poor”. Armani says that his father taught him that “elegance comes from within”. Another lesson came from his sister Rosanna, who while raiding his closet during their childhood, observed, “that girls can feel good in men’s clothing”. These lessons were masterfully applied when, following the launch of the company in 1975, ‘the Armani style’ was born. “In actual fact”, Armani remembers, “my first fashion-related job, in the Sixties, was as a salesman in the men’s department at la Rinascente. An experience that proved to be extremely useful in terms of understanding what men were looking for when buying a suit”. This process of listening and watching resulted in the first creations designed by Armani, first for big-name brands of the caliber of Nino Cerruti, then as a freelance designer, up until the beginning of his partnership with Galeotti. The Armani style was the result of two ingenious hunches. The first was the launch of the unstructured men’s jacket. This was achieved by defying convention, altering its proportions and freeing it from the linings and supports that staightjacketed men. He was in search of a new informal elegance dictated by the times. His second hunch was to dress women in the same type of jacket. The result was a revolutionary image of a women in trousers, independent, powerful and beautiful on account of having acquired an extra measure of self-confidence. When talking about those years, actress Glenn Close, one of the first ambassadors of the brand, said: “I wasn’t consciously creating an image. I was choosing clothes that I felt comfortable in.” Forty years have passed since then and, in spite of creative changes, his designs remain faithful to the line; there has never been any hint of excess: no questions required as to why Armani is still one of the best-loved designers in the world! For many years, however, Armani has no longer simply been an extraordinary couturier: his name has become symbolic of a style that has been extended to all aspects of daily life.

GIORGIO ARMANI was born in Piacenza in 1934. Today, the Armani universe includes the Giorgio Armani, Armani Privé, Emporio Armani, EA7, Armani Collezioni, Armani Jeans, Armani Junior, Armani Exchange, Armani Casa, Armani Beauty, Armani Ristorante, Armani Hotels, Armani Fiori and Armani Dolci trademarks, almost all represented in Milan by the Armani Building in via Manzoni 31. Armani also owns the city’s basketball team. To mark his 40th anniversary, he has just opened a museum on Milan’s via Bergognone, hosting a permanent exhibition of his creations. First and foremost, Armani has differentiated his range of clothing, shoes and accessories into various lines ranging from classic to casual clothing for the very young to techno sportswear. However, King Giorgio’s interpretation of the world of fashion has not stopped here: there’s also beauty, featuring a line of makeup that is both natural and sophisticated, based on maximum attention to product quality, and elegance. To give just one example, the palette of Armani eyeshadows is a compendium of the designer’s chromatic research, featuring colours that are hard to find elsewhere, ranging from shades of sand to gold, but also unique hues of light blue or pink, unquestionably hallmark features of the Maestro’s style. Another trademark is his perfume. Take, for example, ‘Acqua di Giò’, the men’s perfume created in 1996, that continues to evolve: the latest version, defined by the designer as an “expression of freedom”, further imbues the fragrance with a more “assertive, citrusy and aquatic” bouquet. Armani has said that he considers perfume “a natural extension of what you’re wearing”. For this reason, he personally developed the product, in collaboration with famous ‘nose’, Alberto Morillas. The result is a perfume that, even today, is the most popular in Italy and the third most widely sold in the world. In fact, one bottle is sold every five seconds. Though satisfied, Armani is still dreaming about “developing a perfume that captures the smell of the sea, with its strength and ebb and flow”. In the meantime, he has once again revolutionized the scene with the creation of ‘Si’, a woman’s perfume whose ambassador is Cate Blanchett. It made its appearance in 2014, creating an effect at which Armani is an expert: launching a new trend and, at the same time, revisiting a classic which until just a short while before had been taken for granted. With the same enthusiasm that is part of the Armani philosophy, his company continued to add to its product line, expanding not only into the home goods market, with the marvelous Armani Casa collection, but also into flowers and even confectionery. And that’s not all: both in Milan and throughout the rest of the world, Armani boasts restaurants and hotels that have become new reference points for hospitality. He owns 3 restaurants in Milan: Armani Privé, Emporio Armani Caffè and the legendary Armani Nobu, opened in 2000 with chef/owner Nobu Matsuhisa, bringing a whole new trend to Japanese cuisine. His hotels, currently only found in Milan and Dubai, deserve a special chapter: based on the motto, ‘Stay with Armani’, these hotels offer a world of sophisticated beauty where fabrics and décor serve as

a direct reference to the lines and fabrics showcased on the runway. Colours, spaces and the choice of furnishings create an unmistakable atmosphere, because “the law of luxury”, explains the designer, “is not to add but to detract”. International stars, the very same who flock to his fashion shows, and for whom Armani has practically invented red-carpet dressing, also greatly appreciate his style of hospitality. These celebrities, some of the most famous names in the business, are characterized by an elegance that is as incontrovertible as it is discreet: they are those who have internalized the Maestro’s lesson. “Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered”.

THE CITY AND THE WORLD Armani’s relationship with Milan continues to be special and intense. The company is deeply rooted in the city which, in turn, generously offers its spaces. Anyone strolling through the centre who happens to stop in via Cusani will notice what the Milanese now call ‘Armani’s wall’: a huge billboard (above) which, on a rotational basis, shows various aspects of the maison, in a sort of permanent installation. This year, in particular, the city will host a round-up of exhibitions (the most recent being dedicated to interior design, here on the right). Last but not least, over the past few days, the city has been enriched by a fabulous new museum in via Bergognone, named Armani/Silos.

Dizzy heights

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, located between piazza Duomo and the Teatro alla Scala, is the ‘Living Room’ of Milan. Now it will (also) be possible to view it from above: the restoration work conducted to give it a makeover in time for Expo will see the opening of an aerial walkway. Rumour has it that it’s absolutely spectacular!.

Behind the scenes

In the year 2000, the renovations masterminded by Mario Botta transformed Milan’s 18th century Teatro alla Scala into a technologically avant-garde masterpiece. The new ‘scenic tower’, standing at a height of 56m, 18 of which are below ground, houses stage machinery capable of handling the most complex and spectacular stage sets, even when the curtain is up. The Duomo in Milan is the fourth largest cathedral in Europe, after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St. Paul’s in London and the Cathedral of Seville. A masterpiece housing countless secrets. On the floor near the main entrance is a sundial installed in 1768 by astronomers from the Accademia di Brera, placed so that it is struck by a ray of sunlight breaking through a hole in the opposite wall. A staggering 2,500 statues adorn its exterior: not only saints and martyrs, but also dinosaurs and pigeons.

A Leonardo that you might not have expected…

The Last Supper, the Codex Atlanticus and his machines. But then, there’s also this mysterious portrait, a small, unforgettable painting, attributed to Maestro da Vinci, entitled ‘Portrait of a Musician’. It’s preserved, together with several other breathtaking masterpieces, at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana.

… and the one that you were looking for

Each year, in order to view Leonardo’s Last Supper, 410,000 visitors stand in line. During Expo, at least another 300,000 are expected. As an image, ‘The Last Supper’ is the most reproduced religious painting of all time and has been put on everything from mirrors, to mouse pads, to musical pillows. In fact, on entering the refectory, visitors are often surprised that this is actually what it looks like.

Hidden treasures

It’s easy to admire its exterior complex, possibly viewed from the splendours of parco Sempione. However, Castello Sforzesco hides a secret belly, consisting of underground passages and unexpected niches. Leonardo also features here, and the myths abound.

Marvels

It’s the other face of the famed Pinacoteca di Brera, the Orto botanico and the Osservatorio astronomico. At the last census-taking, the Biblioteca Braidense, built at the behest of Empress Maria Teresa of Austria in 1770, boasted 898,377 printed books, 2,119 manuscripts and 2,368 incunabola. A truly wondrous sight!.

Picturesque corners

One’s first impression is a series of canals fronted by myriad stores, pavement bars and eateries. However, a whole different side of Milan is hidden along the towpaths of the Naviglio Grande, in the Porta Genova district: a peep behind its countless doorways will reveal several marvelous secret courtyards, home to a host of delightful artisan workshops, often open to the public.

Mosaics

You’re not in Ravenna nor in Piazza Armerina. You’re in Milan, and this is Sant’Ambrogio. In addition to being noted for its medieval architecture, a perfect example of Romanesque splendour, there’s something else to admire: a rare mosaic, that after various vicissitudes, finally found its way here.

Stadium support

The stadium in Milan, known as ‘San Siro’ because of the area in which it is located, can accommodate up to 80,000 spectators and hosts the home matches of A.C. Milan and Inter. Its structure is unmistakable: four corner towers and seven intermediate towers carry box beams in pre-stressed reinforced concrete to support the bleachers.

Leonardo da Vinci

Everything about Leonardo: an artist, academic, scientist and inventor. Three events offer insight into the life of the Renaissance genius including, believe it or not, an (impossible) interview.

A MULTI-TALENTED GENIUS The largest exhibition devoted to Leonardo da Vinci ever conceived in Italy, an approach encompassing all the aspects of the work of this multifaceted genius, both as an artist and a scientist. Spread out over twelve sections, the exhibition showcases paintings, drawings and manuscripts by Leonardo originating from several of the world’s greatest museums. Among the works on loan, particularly worthy of note is his St. Jerome from the Pinacoteca Vaticana which, by showing Leonardo’s approach to ancient and modern art, art and science serves as the icon of the exhibition. In addition to the exhibition at Palazzo Reale, during the same period, the city will also host a series of events focusing on the traces left by Leonardo both in Milan and outside the city.

NEVER-SEEN-BEFORE DA VINCI “La mente di Leonardo”marks the end of a cycle of 24 exhibits about the Codex Atlanticus, held in sequence since 2009. Villa Monastero is one of the four magnificent lake dwellings involved in the ‘Camelie sul Lario’ event, together with Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, Villa Melzi in Bellagio and Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona. Surrounded by a Botanical Garden abounding in rare species, in spring it sees the flourishing of a thousand camellias in bloom. We warmly suggest taking the long route through the park – an explosion of colours, shapes and heady scents.

Franco Maria Ricci, a publisher and art collector, has dedicated the last ten years to creating an ingenious, visionary project: a monumental green labyrinth, the largest in the world, featuring a star-shaped layout covering 7 hectares, and thousands of different bamboo species. In the middle of the maze visitors will find a building hosting an art gallery, a temporary exhibition space, a bookshop, a restaurant, a café/bistrot and a shop selling local regional products. BENEATH THE SPIRES OF THE DUOMO For the third consecutive year, the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra returns to piazza Duomo for a large free concert dedicated to the city. The performance, starring virtuoso violinist David Garrett, will be conducted by Riccardo Chailly. The show, slated to be one of the most exciting on the 2015 classical music scene, includes pieces by Paganini, Brahms, Verdi and Rossini.

Eighty one hour performances of acrobatics, dance, music, clowning and original stage sets. The exhibition explores this precious wealth of images in two parts: “Inside”, showcasing the works of famous Italian masters, and “Out”, dedicated to international photographers.

Throughout his life, Brassaï, Hungarian by birth and Parisian by election, a writer, photographer and film maker, had an all-consuming love for Paris. In “Paris la nuit” and “Paris de jour” he portrayed every corner of the city, every detail, every moment of daily life, “In search of the poetry in the fog that transformed things, the poetry of the night that transforms the city, the poetry of the weather that transforms beings.”
