design city that isn’t eager to embrace its own history (although it’s a very ancient one), because it is always looking towards the future. This is the Milan described in this issue by archistar Michele De Lucchi, whose projects have contributed to shaping the new face of Milan: the futuristic Porta Nuova district, the Expo area, the Parenti Theatre with its swimming-pool stage and even the new placement of Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini. This is a city capable of ‘inspiring’ others, thanks to its experimental architecture, its design prototypes, its daring models, who parade down its catwalks and its unparalleled window displays. What De Lucchi sees is a beautiful, young, constantly evolving Milan. A Milan of the future that in some ways, as described by Claudio Liu, the entrepreneurial restaurateur who answered our ‘ten questions’, is already ‘here’. Boasting a Chinese passport and a Milanese lifestyle, Liu opened Iyo, the first restaurant in Italy to earn a Michelin star for ‘ethnic’ cuisine. Japanese? Fusion? Liu describes his cuisine as ‘new Milanese cuisine’ because today’s world consists of a melting pot of cultures that eliminates distance and exalts differences, and that’s how Milan aims to be. “Your key to an exclusive experience of the city” is the leitmotif of these pages. To discover the latest fashion trends and impeccable Milanese style, to always be updated about the new openings of exclusive boutiques and restaurants, to have the right advice about luxury shopping. Milan Luxury offers an overview of the city seen through the eyes of experts in the field – with secret shopping addresses, the hottest, most elite restaurants and the corners loved best by locals. It’s an hourglass of time, offering up-to-the minute suggestions about what to do and what to visit in Milan in just a few hours, without wasting time. And it shows how to avoid tourist clichés, providing readers with firsthand insider information about curiosities and ‘off-the-beaten track’ attractions.

Our job is to be continually updated, to understand what’s going on around us. It’s not a question of staying young but of remaining in touch with the world

– Ettore Sottsass, architect and designer–

INTERVIEW | MICHELE DE LUCCHI

Ph.GiovanniGastel

What De Lucchi loves best about Milan is that it is both a workshop and an open building site, a city that is “open to discussion and ready to embrace modernity.” For many years, it was a place from which he drew inspiration in order to realize his projects elsewhere. However, over the past decade, he decided to use it as a fertile place where creative projects will develop.

ichele De Lucchi |Interview by Elena Binda

TIMELESS OBJECTS Michele De Lucchi has designed objects that are now recognized as part of the history of design, including, above all, the ‘Tolomeo’ Lamp designed in collaboration with Giancarlo Fassina in 1986 (shown next to the title). The lamp helped Artemide to gain worldwide recognition.

I

t goes without saying that De Lucchi’s Milanese studio is a chamber of marvels. For those who know the architect and his preferences, it is not surprising that wood is one of his favourite materials. However, the fact that those entering his studio are greeted by the unmistakable smell of a carpenter’s shop is somewhat surprising. It is a scent that transmits simplicity and pragmatism, a sense of being close to nature, an idea of a friendly work environment and sustainable beauty. If it were only an olfactory market ploy, it would be ingenious. But, in truth, it’s something even better, because the four-storey building, where approximately thirty people work, has the soul of a workshop. It is not run like other studios, where the scale models of projects are entrusted to specialized suppliers. It’s an authentic workshop, a carpenter’s shop, where the models are created in-house. It is a place where the architects, beginning with the maestro himself, who is also a trained sculptor, actually come and examine the wood and interact with the model makers. Sixty-five year-old Michele De Lucchi is the type of architect to whom the appellation ‘archistar’ truly applies: he has won awards; he has designed memorable objects,

13

INTERVIEW | MICHELE DE LUCCHI

buildings and infrastructure; his customers include VIPs from all walks of life and several countries (for example he is the favourite architect of the State of Georgia). He could behave like a diva, but he is not the type. He doesn’t appear to be an intellectual, but instead he has the air of a dreamer who has been endowed with a sense of practicality and an aptitude for design, a talent that enables him to transform dreams into objects, shapes and structures. With his thick graying beard and avuncular smile, De Lucchi exudes an academic air of a design professor. He loves to tell stories, because “building means inventing and if you’re not capable of describing your inventions then buildings don’t exist.” His perspective of Milan, the city of his adoption, whose face he is in the process of helping to change, is one of optimism. He has a great fondness for Milan, which he sees as a vibrant, creative city, with a story to tell. Is Milan a beautiful or ugly city? A bit of both, like all cities… However, Milan has never stopped evolving. This is a part of its charm. In spite of hosting numerous works of art, it has difficulty in perceiving itself as a city of art, because it isn’t eager to embrace its past. Do you think that Milan has a tendency to neglect its past? Although it has historic areas which clearly have historic value, it doesn’t focus on them. It is the Italian city that best represents the 20th century, even though its most symbolic monument is an outlandish Gothic monument…

14

ZEN AND THE ART OF THE CHAINSAW It all began from a desire not to waste logs of wood, that were too beautiful to be used as firewood, and from the Zen-based philosophy of finding peace and concentration through manual work. Hence the creation of Michele de Lucchi’s sculptures, real ‘little houses’ modeled with a chainsaw and then enhanced with small, precious details. The architect dedicates himself to sculpture at his workshop in Angera, on Lake Maggiore. He only uses wood, his favourite material, because “it ages well.” “However, time is the greatest artist”, says De Lucchi. “What it manages to achieve on surfaces is inimitable.” www.micheledelucchiartworks.it

15

INTERVIEW | MICHELE DE LUCCHI “Outlandish Gothic”? Are you referring to the Duomo? Well, you can’t really describe a building that was inaugurated in 1892, but never completed, as ‘Gothic’! And yet, this immense cathedral is intrinsically Milanese. Just before he died, I met Gustavo Latis (editor’s note: an important architect and a key figure of Milanese culture, who passed away last August at the age of 96). You know what he showed me? His project to complete the Duomo! It’s the kind of project about which an architect can fantasize for an entire lifetime. There’s something profoundly Milanese in both the efficient approach of someone who would like to finish the unfinishable, and in the idea of a building site that is never finished. Milan epitomizes design: above all, its beauty lies in what can’t yet be seen. In other words, you envisage Milan as a building site? It’s a city that is always open to discussion and ready to embrace modernity. Although at times projects are not completed, even these pave the way for future design. If you think about it, this is one of the reasons that people come to Milan. For example, its Furniture Fair or fashion shows are two events that attract hordes of visitors in search of new ideas and new trends every year. When people shop they tend to look rather than buy. Milan is a workshop and a showcase. So, you consider Milan a place of inspiration? Definitely. Absolutely! Milan has always provided me with all kinds of visual and literary ideas. For years, this was all that it meant to me. I worked in the city while using it as a source of inspiration, and then realized my projects elsewhere. It is only recently that I have actually been given an opportunity to work for the city, designing things that are recognized here. It’s true: you have only been one of Milan’s leading architects for the last ten years. Why not earlier? These things are always a mystery (he laughs). I don’t know, I think it all began with the project for the Parenti Theatre, in 2009, a real institution in the city. After that, things started snowballing and other stimulating opportunities presented themselves. These included projects for Expo, the restructuring of the Triennale, the Porta Nuova district, the relocation of the Pietà Rondanini, Palazzo Litta and the Caimi swimming pool… It was a great period. And when you were asked to contribute to design the new face of the city, where did your inspiration come from? The UniCredit Pavilion in Porta Nuova is shaped like a seed, and when I talk about it, this is how I like to describe it, because the sense and message of my work is inherent in that word. It embodies the essence of life and the magic of materials that transform themselves and then regenerate the organisms that created them. Seeds can remain fertile for

16

Michele De Lucchi was born in Ferrara in 1951. He studied architecture in Florence and later moved to Milan where he has lived for the past forty years. The owner of an atelier/workshop on Lake Maggiore, De Lucchi has worked as an architect and a designer throughout the world. A key player in avant-garde movements during the Eighties, in the Nineties, Olivetti hired him to head its design department. He has worked for Enel, Piaggio, Poste Italiane and Telecom Italia. He has designed buildings in Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Georgia, including the famous bridge of peace in Tblisi. He has won the Compasso d’oro award, the Oscar of Italian design, several times. In 2003, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris acquired a significant number of his works which are also displayed in prestigious design museums across the world.

years, retaining their vitality without actually knowing when conditions that will allow them to sprout arise. That’s how I like to approach the future: I am convinced that Milan is a city that does a lot of sowing. What are your favourite places? They are places that I associate with personal memories. The first one that comes to mind is a pizzeria in via Losanna, in the Corso Sempione district, which at that time was considered somewhat off the beaten track. It was there, while sitting at a table on the pavement, that Memphis (a design group that De Lucchi founded with his friend and mentor Ettore Sottsass, editor’s note) was founded. I also associate my favourite trattoria in Brera, the Torre di Pisa, to which I often return, with Sottsass and the stimulating conversations we have had over the years. And then there’s a

17

INTERVIEW | MICHELE DE LUCCHI

corner of the city, between via Lincoln and via Franklin, where we lived and where my children learnt to ride their bikes. Nowadays, one of the places that I love best is the city’s most vibrant district: Piazza Gae Aulenti or the new Feltrinelli Foundation, which typifies that open, design-oriented Milan that I mentioned earlier, which is open to all types of architectural enrichment. If you could give just one suggestion to visitors to Milan, what would you recommend? While exploring the city, I would tell them to be observant and to focus on discovering its hidden treasures, exemplified by its beautiful courtyards. The entrances to innumerable buildings in this city conceal a number of surprises that should not be underestimated. And, on the other hand, what is overrated? The world of finance and everything that it encompasses: certain conventional restructurings and certain… horrible neckties that are the offspring of the same distorted idea that destroys the best of this city. Your job basically consists of designing beauty. But can beauty be purchased? Is it justifiable that it is translated into a luxury item or should it be available to everyone? I believe that the key lies in not confusing the possibility of enjoying beauty with the idea of possessing it. We could talk about this idea of possession for hours. I believe that a beautiful object is an object that has a history and a value

18

FREE DESIGN Although, over the past few years, his most famous projects have been dedicated to architecture, De Lucchi also boasts an illustrious career as a designer. The creator of several cult objects designed for leading brands, in 1990 he launched a line called ‘Produzione Privata’, created to design experimental objects, untainted by the industrial logic of production. He says, “I wanted to invest in objects infused with a richer feeling of humanity.” www.produzioneprivata.com

that goes beyond its appearance. This is an object that is precious because of the material used to make it and the work involved in its manufacture. In this sense, a precious object always has an artisanal genesis, it always involves a lot of effort, and it’s only right that this kind of effort comes with a price tag. However, purchasing an object is not the only means of appreciating beauty. On the contrary! For example, designing beautiful spaces for public use is a way of sharing beauty and helping society to develop. So, beauty isn’t a luxury? Beauty isn’t a luxury, yet there is no luxury without beauty.

MICHELE DE LUCCHI | MY MILANO

“A city that looks towards the future” The Milan that Michele De Lucchi loves best is associated with personal memories, experienced in places that are not necessarily recognized for their architectural beauty. However, there is a part of Milan that the architect contributed to building and which he tells us about.

UNICREDIT PAVILION The Porta Nuova district, currently one of the city’s coolest neighbourhoods, revolves around the spectacular Pizza Gae Aulenti. Built between 2013 and 2015 and commissioned by one of Italy’s leading banks, the UniCredit Pavilion is a multi-functional space, comprising an auditorium, an exhibition space, a day-care centre and several other facilities. Michele de Lucchi conceived it as a ‘seed’, in this case a building made of wood on the edge of a large park. “Its soft curves stand out against the sharp lines of the neighboring buildings. It’s clear that it’s not a block of flats or offices, and it is intended to serve as a symbol linking the natural setting of the park with the people in the skyscrapers. www.unicreditpavilion.it

MY MILANO | MICHELE DE LUCCHI

PIETÀ RONDANINI Since 1952, Milan has housed the socalled Pietà Rondanini supposedly the last sculpture that Michelangelo worked on prior to his death. Since 2015, the statue has been on display in the ancient Spanish Hospital of Castello Sforezco, especially restored for the purpose. Michele de Lucchi, who confessed that he was hesitant about changing the placement of the masterpiece, organized the space so that visitors would see the Pietà from behind, thus forcing them to walk around it in order to view it in all of its splendour. www.milanocastello.it

GALLERIE D’ITALIA Located in the heart of Milan, between Piazza della Scala, via Manzoni and via Morone, four historic buildings were connected, renovated and transformed to house the Intesa Sanpaolo and Fondazione Cariplo collections of 19th and 20th century art under the collective name of Gallerie d’Italia. De Lucchi, who curated the project in 2012, considers the Gallerie “a new pathway to gain insight into what Milan was like in the past and how it plans on being in the future”, a “small miracle” that has enabled the city to preserve and return spaces of significant architectural importance to their former splendour”. www.gallerieditalia.com

MERCATO DEL DUOMO A bronze aerial sculpture of an ancient olive tree designed by famous British artist Adam Loewe is suspended in the foyer of Mercato del Duomo, Autogrill’s new temple of taste, located at the corner of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. “The Galleria”, says De Lucchi, “is a hive of activity, packed with people chatting, eating, walking and window shopping. It’s great that it now has a market that reconnects people to the land and its roots.” www.ilmercatodelduomo.it

RESIDENZE LITTA “One of the most beautiful streets in Milan, Corso Magenta is home to Palazzo Litta, one of the most impressive buildings in the city. The Palazzo had three entrances, which have now become four.” This is how soft-spoken Michele De Lucchi describes the luxurious residential complex, recently redesigned by his firm. The innermost part of Palazzo Litta conceals a renovated area and a five-storey building that was constructed from scratch. www.residenzelitta.it

Behind the scenes

In the year 2000, the renovations masterminded by Mario Botta transformed Milan’s 18th century Teatro alla Scala into a technologically avant-garde masterpiece. The new ‘scenic tower’, standing at a height of 56m, 18 of which are below ground, houses stage machinery capable of handling the most complex and spectacular stage sets, even when the curtain is up. The most advanced prototype in the world.

Marble spectaculars

Among the statues and decorations of the Duomo of Milan, under the watchful gaze of the Madonnina, one would expect to only see portrayals of biblical figures, saints, demons and garlands‌ but here, this rule does not apply: amidst the 3,400 statues etched in marble there are also a number of famous Italian personages including the poet Dante, renowned composer and conductor Arturo Toscanini and King Vittorio Emanuele, but also two boxers (in honour of Italian champion Primo Carnera) and a semi-nude woman lying between one spire and another. Keep your eyes peeled!

An iconic vineyard in the city

Recently opened and housed in the gardens of the Casa degli Atellani (see photo), Leonardo da Vinci’s Vineyard is located just a short distance from the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where he painted ‘The Last Supper’. Visitors can now take an insightful tour of both the House and the Vineyard.

A Leonardo that you might not have expected…

The Last Supper, the Codex Atlanticus and his machines. But then, there’s also this mysterious portrait, a small, unforgettable painting, attributed to Maestro da Vinci, entitled ‘Portrait of a Musician’. It’s preserved, together with several other breathtaking masterpieces, at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana.

… and the one that you were looking for

Each year, in order to view Leonardo’s Last Supper, 450,000 visitors stand in line. As an image, ‘The Last Supper’ is the most reproduced religious painting of all time and has been put on everything from mirrors, to mouse pads, to musical pillows. In fact, on entering the refectory, visitors are often surprised that this is actually what it looks like.

You’re not in Ravenna nor in Piazza Armerina. You’re in Milan, and this is Sant’Ambrogio. The MUDEC-Museo delle Culture started life as an operation of archaeological recovery in one of the most lively districts of Milan, the Tortona area. The architecture of MUDEC mirrors the many spirits that dwell in the museum, featuring a central hall of free inspiration which generates an inner courtyard with a characteristic ‘flower’ shape.

Fashion on show

To celebrate 40 years dedicated to fashion, last May Giorgio Armani opened the doors of a new exhibition hub in a former Nestlé granary in Milan’s Tortona district, at the general headquarters of maison Armani. The museum/exhibition space designed by Japanese archistar Tadao Ando is divided by themes that have inspired and continue to inspire the creative work of ‘King Giorgio’.

Recently named the “most beautiful building on the planet”, the green tower designed by architect Stefano Boeri and included in the Porta Nuova project is a revolutionary experiment. New hub

One of Milan’s oldest areas has been restored thanks to a urban project making it the most modern district in the city. The epicentre of the area, packed with high-tech stores, bookstores, cafés, pizzerias and discotheques, is the large raised square dedicated to architect and designer Gae Aulenti. The piazza is surrounded by skyscrapers, including the UniCredit tower, the highest building in Italy, and the multi-purpose UniCredit Pavilion, designed by Michele De Lucchi.

PASTICCERIA COVA This is one of those places whose appellation “historic” venue is fully justified. A cult destination for gourmands since 1817, it has had the singular honour of being mentioned by name and, what’s more, several times, in the works of Ernest Hemingway, who loved its atmosphere and delicacies. If you’re considering going there to pay homage to this literary genious, you can rest assured that you will return for other reasons: for example, the sheer exquisiteness of its cakes, pastries, ice-cream, sugared almonds or savoury snacks, created by master pastry chefs. Perfect for an “Italian-style” breakfast, consisting of coffee and brioches. Cova also offers the option of a light lunch.

Starred-Michelin chef, Vito Mollica, has just touched down at this restaurant, a great destination for ‘celeb watching’ and business lunches. Aged 43, 19 of which were spent working for the Four Seasons’ group around the world, Mollica was recently named executive chef of Milan and Florence meaning that La Veranda will now be helmed by his right-hand man Marco Veneruso. “What I would like”, says Mollica, “is to build upon what Sergio Mei, my predecessor and maestro, has developed over the past few years while, obviously, adding my own personal touch based on my philosophy that the main value of any dish is the quality of its ingredients, with a nod to Lombardy cuisine.”

RISTORANTE SETA Via Andegari, 9. T: 02 87318897. www.mandarinoriental.com The prestigious Michelin Guide awarded the new Mandarin Oriental’s Seta restaurant with its first star. The restaurant is helmed by multi-starred Executive Chef Antonio Guida and boasts a cuisine distinguished by sophisticated dishes featuring outstanding seasonal ingredients where flavours are enhanced thanks to unexpected though beautifully balanced pairings.

CULTURE CHANEL is defined as “a collection of exhibitions”, where each individual event is not only a part of the same unique project but also one that is designed to shed new light on what forged the designer’s singular style and identity. In Venice, the seventh chapter of this story evokes Gabrielle Chanel’s creative universe through her relationship with books and literature. Opera The opening of the season at La Scala is more than just a ‘première’, it’s an event rich in tradition, history and sophistication. The highlight of this year’s show is Giacomo Puccini’s ‘Madama Butterfly’, proposed by Riccardo Chailly in its original debut version.

CIO-CIO-SAN’S JAPAN One of the world’s most acclaimed and best-loved operas, Madama Butterfly premiered at La Scala in February 1904, but was a resounding flop. Puccini withdrew the opera from the theatre’s schedule and began extensive revisions. The second act was divided into two, making it a threeact opera, and in May of the same year, the story of the geisha CioCio-San and her tragic love for U.S. lieutenant Pinkerton was staged at the Grande Teatro in Brescia to great acclaim. Maestro Riccardo Chailly continues his critical reinterpretation of Puccini’s works by proposing this first original version. The opera stars soprano Maria José Siri and is directed by Alvis Hermanis.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK | CLAUDIO LIU

10 questions for... Thirty-four year-old Claudio Liu has a Chinese passport and an Italian background. A combination of his love for Japan and his typically Chinese business acumen resulted in his decision to open Iyo, the first ‘ethnic’ restaurant in Italy to earn a Michelin star. Japanese? Fusion? He prefers to describe it as “new Milanese cuisine”.

Milan in three words. Charm, fashion and opportunity.

secret bar where I like to surprise my friends. It’s by invitation only.

A good reason to visit it, one to work there and one to invest in it. I would visit it for its culture, I would work there because it’s still a great place to live and I would invest in it because it’s growing rapidly. Furthermore, it’s in Italy, the best place in the world to be in!

Are you considering any new start-ups in the city? You bet! Although there is no lack of ‘high-end’ restaurants in Milan, there is still a lot of room in the casual dining and street food sector.

Yours is a dual culture: what makes you feel typically Chinese and what’s ‘Milanese’ about you? My lifestyle is Milanese while my entrepreneurial mindset is Chinese: ambition and determination. At times you hear people saying that the Chinese community is ‘closed’. It’s not true, we’re just focused - on our work and our objectives. Crazy about sushi: why are the Milanese so enamoured of Japanese cuisine? Because they find it fascinating and exotic with several fundamental plus points: its strong roots, its sense of aesthetics and its total respect for raw materials. In Japanese culture, people talk about ‘umami’, the ‘universal good’: both oriental and Italian cuisines embrace this philosophy! (1) What do you do when you have a free halfday in Milan? A little shopping: Milan offers boundless options. Your go-to district for shopping? Corso Vercelli and its surrounding areas, where I know each and every shopkeeper.

How would you complete the following sentence: “Milan is the only city where…” …the compromise between organization and quality of life is so well balanced.

Your favourite Italian restaurants? For fish, the Langosteria in via Savona. For creative cuisine, Matias Perdomo’s Contraste on the Navigli. For pizza, Ciripizza in via Canonica and for traditional cuisine, the Trippa trattoria in via Muratori. Where do you go when you need to take a break and relax? I go for a walk along the Navigli (2). It has a great atmosphere and fabulous cocktails. I usually stop in at Da Rita, or at Mag, or at 1930 (3). It’s the only speakeasy in Milan, a
