major contributor with 74 polio cases and the majority of these are from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Recently, India’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan has offered assistance to Pakistan’s government in its fight against the crippling poliovirus. Vocational training is education only in the type of trade a person wants to pursue, forgoing traditional academics. Many pockets of the society are individually contributing to vocational training across the region. Some of the notable institutions include: Fauji Foundation having 65 centers across Pakistan, The Hunar Foundation established since Feb 2008 and The Aman Foundation (AMANTECH) established in 2011.

GARY C.K. HUANG PRESIDENT 2014-15
In October 1914, Jonas Salk was born - a man who would change world history by inventing the first effective vaccine against polio. When the vaccine was introduced in the United States in the 1950s, polls indicated that polio was one of the nation's two greatest fears, second only to the fear of atomic war. And with good reason: In the 1952 U.S. polio epidemic, 58,000 cases were reported, with 3,145 deaths and 21,269 instances of permanent, disabling paralysis. Globally, polio paralyzed or killed up to half a million people every year.
track to achieve full eradication by 2018 - if we can keep up the momentum that has brought us this far. And this month, we will mark World Polio Day on 24 October, and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Dr. Salk's birth. I ask you all to Light Up Rotary this month by doing whatever you can to shine a spotlight on our efforts to eradicate polio. Call your government officials and let them know that polio eradication matters to you. Go to endpolionow.org for inspiring stories about Rotary's work, and share them on social media. And make the best investment you'll ever make, by donating to polio eradication right on the endpolionow.org website and earning a twoto-one match on your contribution from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Soon after the Salk vaccine was created, Albert Sabin developed an oral version, allowing tremendous numbers of children to be immunized quickly, safely, and inexpensively. In 1985, Rotary's PolioPlus program was born, with a simple goal: to immunize every child under age five against this crippling disease. Thanks in large part to the initial success of PolioPlus, in 1988 the 166 member states of the World Health Assembly unanimously set the goal of global polio eradication.
When we eradicate polio - and we will - we'll have brought the world into a better future, and Rotary into a better future as well. We will have proved ourselves, as an organization, capable of great things. And we will have given our children and grandchildren a gift that will endure forever: a poliofree world.
At the time, the idea was breathtakingly ambitious, and many called it impossible. Today, we are closer to this goal than ever before, with only a few hundred cases of polio reported per year, and just three remaining endemic countries. We are on

Message from District Governor
SHAHBAZ QURESHI DG 2014-15
Welcome to the 4th month of the Rotary Year 2014 -2015. This month we look at activities / events dedicated to polio eradication & vocational service. I am grateful to all clubs and their respective Presidents, who have given valuable time for the above two issues facing our country today.
strengthening the cold chain at Federal, KPK, Balochistan and FATA vaccine stores. The grant will also strengthen the vaccine management through provision of cold chain and logistic personnel at Federal, FATA and four provinces. We at Rotary are committed to eradication of polio from the world & specifically so from Pakistan, as we are one of the last few countries where this disease is crippling the society. I urge all clubs & members to join hands and commit to cripple polio virus from the world.
As per information “Pakistan presents one of the most complex polio eradication environments in the world. The country has reported 246 cases so far this year compared to 74 in 2013. 86% of the cases are from FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 35% of the total caseload is from North and South Waziristan Agencies where no polio campaign conducted. An estimated 290,000 children under the age of five have not been vaccinated for more than two years leading to the ongoing explosive polio outbreak in the region. The number of infected districts has also risen to 31 compared to 20 in 2013.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. - Maimonides Vocational education (education based on occupation or employment), also known as career and technical education (CTE) or technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is education that prepares people for specific trades, crafts and careers at various levels from a trade, a craft, technician, or a high professional practitioner position in engineering, accountancy, nursing, medicine, architecture, pharmacy, law etc. Craft vocations are usually based on manual or practical activities, traditionally non-academic, related to a specific trade, occupation, or vocation. It is sometimes referred to as technical education as the trainee directly develops expertise in a particular group of techniques. Vocational education spans craft, further and higher education.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) signed agreements to make sure children are vaccinated in Pakistan, one of the last polio virus strongholds in the world. The USD 5.4 million (562 million Japanese Yen) worth grant will contribute to supporting UNICEF’s commitment towards polio eradication effort during the period December 2014-November 2015. Japan’s donation will make it possible for UNICEF to procure 15 million doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) for mop-up campaigns, 1.3 million doses of the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) for children in high risk areas of the FATA and Karachi, 100 solar ice-lined refrigerators (ILRs) for districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and FATA, backup generators and temperature monitoring systems for

Vocational Services Month
In 1905, Paul Harris organized a new community service organization that has grown to be today's modern Rotary International. To build on the professional nature of Rotary, his first priority was to focus on the vocation calling of prospective members. Vocation has been the cornerstone of Rotary from the beginning, with membership traditionally determined by the prospect's Vocational Classification. Today, Vocational Service takes its place alongside the four other Avenues of Service (Club Service, Community Service, International Service and New Generations).
business or profession. Rotarians have the dual responsibility of representing their vocation within the club and exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace. Vocational service is both the responsibility of a Rotary CLub and its members. The Club is to implement and encourage the objective by frequent demonstration, by application of its own actions, by example and by the development of projects that help members contribute their vocational talents. The role of members is to conduct themselves, their businesses and their professions in accordance with the Rotary principles and to respond to projects which the club has developed.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their professions and to practice high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations and inspire others in the process.
As Rotarians engaged in a business or profession, you are expected to:
1)consider your vocation to be another opportunity
Vocational Service focuses on: l
Adherence to, and promotion of, the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
l
The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just your own or those that are pursued by Rotarians.
l
to serve;
2) be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the thical
codes of my vocation, to the laws of your country, and to the moral standards of your community;
3) do all in your power to dignify your vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in your chosen vocation;
4) be fair to your employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom you have a business or professional relationship;
The contribution of your vocational talents to the problems and needs of society.
5) recognize the honor and respect due to all
October is Vocational Services month and during this month, all Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this avenue of service. One of the Rotary Club's main area of focus is to increase employment opportunities in the community, promote a fair workplace environment, and raise vocational awareness, all through the development of projects that help members of all classifications contribute their vocational talents. It is the opportunity every Rotarian has to represent dignity and integrity through their own vocations as a way to effectively serve society.
occupations which are useful to society;
6) offer your vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;
7) adhere to honesty in advertising and in all
representations to the public concerning your business or profession;
8) neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a
privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.
What is expected from Rotarians

Vocational Services Month
5 Ways to look at Vocational Services l Vocational Awareness: Increase your Clubs awareness of the scope of vocations. Encourage Members to give Classification Talks. Visit other local businesses for education and recruitment. Provide career counselling and job talks by members and guests from a range of professions. l Vocational Awards: Develop a local Awards program to recognize excellence in vocation.Recognize local businesses and give recognition to hardworking individuals, for example, 'Pride of Workmanship' award. l Career Development: Support youth through Careers Days or mentoring programs. Support training programs. l Vocation at Work: Support small business development in your local community. Create vocational opportunities for disabled people. Work with retirees and promote adult literacy programs. l Rotary Volunteers: Designed to create a greater awareness among Rotarians of the volunteer opportunities available within their own and other communities.
The Rotary Code of Conduct (formerly known as the Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions) provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, . in their business and professional activities
Integrity and ethics
One of the central goals of Vocational Service is to promote and advance Rotary's high ethical standards. Two useful tools Rotarians have to assess these standards are The Four-Way Test and The Rotary Code of Conduct.
"The Four-Way Test" of the things we think, say or do is a test used by Rotarians world-wide as a moral code for personal and business relationships. The test can be applied to almost any aspect of life.
The Four-Way Test was conceived in 1932 by businessman Herbert J. Taylor, a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago who served as Rotary International president in 1954-55. Having taken on the task of saving a company from bankruptcy, Taylor developed the test as an ethical guide to follow in all business matters. The company's survival was credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary International in 1934, The FourWay Test remains an essential standard against which Rotarians measure ethical behavior.
