Message of RI President

I find many traditional Chinese values reflected in Rotary values of service and responsibility, of respect for family and for others. Sometimes I call Confucius the world's first Rotarian, because even though he died 2,500 years before Rotary was founded, his ideas are very much Rotary ideas. And one of the things he said was: In English, you say, "It is better to light a single candle than to sit and curse the darkness."

GARY C.K. HUANG

President 2014-15

I think that one line sums up the way we in Rotary approach the problems of the world. There is so much difficulty. There are so many people who need help. Many people look at this and say, "There is nothing I can do." So they do nothing -- and nothing changes. But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one candle, you light one candle -- and so do 1.2 million other Rotarians. Together, we can do so much more than we could ever do alone. Together, we can light up the world. In 2014-15, I am asking each of you to light your own Rotary candle -- and Light Up Rotary together. There are so many ways to Light Up Rotary. I hope many of you will choose to host a Rotary Day, to show your community what Rotary is and what we do. I hope you will involve your Rotaract and Interact clubs in your service, to bring the new generation of the Rotary family closer to Rotary membership. And I hope you will keep Rotary strong by inviting new members into Rotary - including your own spouse and family. Perhaps the most important thing we can do to Light Up Rotary is to finish the job we've been working on for more than a quarter of a century: the eradication of polio. We are so close to our goal. But we will get there only if we keep up the fight, keep up the momentum, and close the funding gap for the polio endgame plan. Light Up Rotary is our theme for this year, but it is more than just a theme. It is how we in Rotary see the world and our role in it. We believe that no one should sit alone in the darkness. Instead, we can come together, all 1.2 million of us, to Light Up Rotary. This is our goal -- and my challenge to you.

Message of District Governor

Greetings to all the members of the “best class clubs” I would like to welcome you all to the Rotary Year 2014-2015. Let us start with congratulating each other for being part of 1.22 million Rotarians aiming to light up the world & light up Rotary. There are 34,282 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries, we are part of an extended family & our outreach extends to 1.22 million friends. Following are some of the issues facing our country today

SHAHBAZ QURESHI

District Governor 2014-15

Education - “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Official statistics released by the Federal Education Ministry of Pakistan depict the overall literacy rate is 46 per cent, while only 26 per cent of girls are literate. Independent sources, however, place the overall literacy rate at 26 per cent and the rate for girls and women at 12 per cent, contending that the higher figures include people who can handle little more than a signature. This is a grim picture and demands immediate attention, I urge all Rotarians to work towards education of the lesser privileged. Polio Eradication - We are 99% of the way to a polio-free world - truly, “This Close” to eradicating polio forever. Three endemic countries left, 2.5 billion children immunized against polio. As per statistics provided by expanded program on immunization in Pakistan 104 cases of Polio have been registered in Pakistan to date. With FATA registering 76 cases, KPK 18 cases, Sindh 9 cases & 1 case in Baluchistan. Let us pledge to work together in eradicating this menace from Pakistan. Water & Sanitation - 15.3 M people in Pakistan don't have access to safe water. Over 93 million people don't have access to adequate sanitation in Pakistan, over half of the population. Over 40,000 children die every year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation in Pakistan. In the end I would like to share this inspirational quote “When MIND is weak, situation is a PROBLEM; When MIND is balanced, situation is a CHALLENGE; When MIND is strong, situation becomes OPPORTUNITY”. These are challenges to all us Rotarians, let us prevail over them & convert them into opportunities to shine the Rotary Light. As we have started our Rotary Year, let's join hands together and engage in changing lives. Proud to be a Rotarian!

Light Up Rotary

Light Up Rotary is not just our theme for the year -it is a call for each of us to take action and make Rotary stronger. Each year rotary clubs around the world grow in strength and size. By this year, there are 34,282 clubs hosting 1.2 million members worldwide. Rotary International as an organization is purposed with bringing together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services while encouraging high ethical standards and furthermore helping to build goodwill and peace in the world. We are an organization that is open to all humans of the Earth, regardless of gender, race, religion or political ideologies. Through our morals, we have strived to achieve greatness while making a visible change in the world we live in. We are the leaders who act responsibly and take action to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges. However, even with over a million members, our job is not easy. The number of people in this world needing help clearly outweighs the number of people offering help. The world is still stricken with poverty, illiteracy is rampant which leads to all sorts of other social problems, diseases like polio have still not been eradicated even though vaccines are freely available and large populations of homeless families still exist. The Rotary clubs work all year long to try to resolve the social issues that plague our nations and in many instances, we have achieved greatness. It is predicted that by December, 2015, the world would be poliofree. But even with all these achievements, we will continue to increase our efforts to help the less fortunate of our society. Our goals may be ambitious but they are definitely reachable. This year, as always, our district will work towards supporting and strengthening our clubs and its members, we will focus and increase our humanitarian services and furthermore we will strive to enhance our public image and spread awareness of our causes. RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius who said: "It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness."

in San Diego, California. "The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world," said Huang, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan. After announcing his theme at the opening session of the five-day training meeting, Huang urged club members tonight Up Rotary in the coming year by hosting a Rotary Day in their community and including local Rotaract and Interact members in their service projects. "How you Light Up Rotary is up to you," Huang said. "You know where you are strong, you know what your community needs, and you know how you can help." Huang also shared his membership development goals, including the need for more women and young adults and his goal to increase membership to a total of 1.3 million members. He asked Rotarians to invite their spouses, family members, and friends to join Rotary. "We need to assume leadership for building strong clubs, and that starts with bringing in new members," he said. Addressing the status of the fight against polio, Huang noted that with the current momentum Rotary is on track to achieve full polio eradication by 2018. "When we eradicate polio - and we will - we will have proved ourselves an organization capable of great things. And we'll be even better equipped for the next challenge we choose to take on. We'll have given the world a gift that will endure forever," he said. By continuing to fight against polio, setting an example in local communities, and growing membership, Huang hopes to see Rotary shine brighter than ever. "Light Up Rotary is our theme, but it is more than our theme. It is how we live in Rotary, how we think in Rotary, how we feel, how we work," Huang said. "It is how we make a difference - every day, in every club, every district, and every country where we serve."

"There are so many problems in the world, so many people who need help. Many people say, 'There's nothing I can do.' So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays dark," Huang told the 537 district governors and their spouses and partners who are attending the 2014 International Assembly

Rotary Day

Light Up Rotary by participating in Rotary Days.

The Rotary Day concept is a simple one: hold a fun, informal event in your community for the nonRotary public and use it as an opportunity to introduce them to Rotary. It's that easy. Rotary Days can help your club drive up interest in membership, strengthen your club's relationships with local institutions and community members, and improve Rotary's image in your community. Imagine the collective impact we can have if all 34,000 Rotary clubs worldwide make a concerted effort to introduce the public to the fun, rewarding experiences that we all enjoy as Rotary members.

Hosting a Rotary Day

Any club, big or small, can host a Rotary Day. Neighboring clubs can pool their resources and cohost a Rotary Day event, and even entire districts can come together to host a large-scale Rotary Day. Rotary Days can take any form, as long as they are fun and appealing to the non-Rotary public. Here are just a few possibilities: u Hold an outdoor picnic or barbecue u Host a sporting event or concert u Organize a family fun run u Align the event with a public parade or festival u Sponsor an event at a museum, art gallery, or cultural center u Secure an auditorium or arena and plan a ticketed reception or buffet dinner

Tips for Rotary Day planners u Feature guests that will appeal to a non-Rotary u u u u

audience. Consider inspirational speakers, celebrities, musicians, or other public figures. If the event will offer food, keep it simple - for example, a barbecue buffet rather than a formal, sit-down meal. Keep admission prices low. Approach local businesses to sponsor your event. Make your event welcoming to families. Encourage members to bring their spouses, children, and other relatives. Avoid using Rotary jargon or referring to internal traditions; present Rotary as an enticing opportunity for prospective members to make new friends, exchange ideas, and take action to improve their local community and the world.

u Highlight

the work of ordinary R o t a r y members d o i n g extraordinary humanitarian work. u Consider including a hands-on s e r v i c e project as part of the event to give visitors Gary C.K. Huang the chance to President, Rotary International, 2014-15 see firsthand how Rotary benefits the community. u Recognize non-Rotary community members who embody Rotary's service ideals. u Seek coverage for the event in local news media. u Collect participants' contact information and follow up within two weeks to invite them to attend a club meeting or event.

National Rotary Days

In addition to the many club- and district-level Rotary Days that will take place this year, there will be a select number of national Rotary Days facilitated by current RI directors and other senior leaders. These events will convey Rotary's relevance, highlight our good work, and appeal specifically to residents of the countries where they take place. Visit President Huang's page on rotary.org after 1 July 2014 for details on these events.

Rotary Days recognition for clubs

District governors are encouraged to give special awards to clubs that undertake successful Rotary Day events during 2014-15. Rotary will provide governors with an electronic template for a certificate.

RI District 3271-Goals

District Goals

and removing incorrect myths about the vaccines.

The Rotary foundation was formed in 1905 and since then the foundation has grown significantly in size and numbers. Only 16 years after being formed, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Now after 109 years if service, there are 34,282 clubs around the world. Yet, one of the foundation's main goals is to continue growing in size and strength. Our mission to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace is a lofty goal that can only be met through sustained action and the ongoing commitment of Rotarians.

Other than polio, we hope to increase our efforts in other projects as well. Our six areas of focus this year are promoting peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, providing clean water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy and overall economic and community development. We intend to collaborate with other organizations to support our humanitarian work and at the same

Each year, the president of Rotary International chooses a theme as an embodiment of the intentions of Rotarians, and the chair of The Rotary Foundation Trustees expresses the goals for the Foundation. Goal setting helps us determine our priorities, get organized, make crucial decisions, and realize our dreams. Clearly stated goals provide a framework for measuring achievement and can be modified by experience to reflect an organization's accomplishments.

Support and strengthen clubs

The rotary foundation is no doubt a very active organization. But as part of our goals, we will continue to strengthen and support are clubs. We encourage all our members to innovate and putforward their ideas on new causes or even pass suggestions on how to improve our current efforts. We encourage all our clubs to participate in a variety of humanitarian activities. Only through our efforts can we make a difference in this world. We welcome people of all races, genders, religions and professions to come and join our clubs. Our aim is to reach 1.3 million members this year. In the process we hope to even start new clubs in a diverse range of nations.

Focus and Increase Humanitarian Service

This year, we hope to completely eradicate polio from the face of the Earth. We have been successful in our efforts so far, but now it is time to finish the job. We hope to increase our efforts in Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. We shall do so by spreading awareness about the risks of this disease

time we will hopefully create significant projects both locally and internationally.

Enhance Public Image and Awareness

Creating awareness about a social problem is usually the first step in the battle to resolve the problem. And the foundation has been rather successful in creating awareness of about the plagues of our society and have gained great support as a result. But we are not only focused on spreading awareness of the problems but are also focused on gaining publicity and improving our brand image, both internally and externally. We hope to keep our websites as a recruiting ground by keeping them updated with timely information and a focused list of our subject matter. Social media hubs like Facebook and Twitter can be a great place to improve our public image. Furthermore, we will improve our campaigns by making them more vibrant and attractive.
