Editor's Note I am a firm believer of Edith Wharton's saying “There are two ways of spreading light…To be the candle…Or the mirror that reflects it”. We as Rotarians are fortunate to be the candle. However, it doesn't stop there; we need to find the mirror as well. Be it our friends, family, neighbor, colleagues; we need to find the sources to spread the light. Here's to membership development, of finding quality members / sources & spreading the rotary light via our various 'sources'. Atiqua Vally Email: atiqua@gmail.com

Message of RI President
I
n Rotary, we mark August as Membership and Extension Month. There is a good reason why we remind ourselves of the importance of membership early in every Rotary year: because the job of growing our membership is one that we can never begin too soon. It is also a job that we can never stop working on. In order to keep serving, Rotary always needs to be growing!
GARY C. K. HUANG
PRESIDENT 2014-15
We have talked for many years about the importance of the family of Rotary. In this Rotary year, I want to make not just the family of Rotary, but our own Rotary families, a priority in our membership. After 37 years of following me in Rotary, my wife, Corinna, finally became a Rotarian last year. We attended the chartering of a new club in Taiwan together, and she said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she joined that club. And soon, so did a lot of other people. Now that club has 102 members, and it's the second-largest club in Taiwan. Inviting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting our numbers up. It addresses the reality that Rotary still has far more men as members than it does women, and that is something we need to work on. When we bring more women into Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospective female members - and become more productive as well. This year we are going to have something new in Rotary: a membership support team pin. This means that if you invite a new member into Rotary, you get a special pin to wear with your Rotary gearwheel. But we all know that the job of growing membership doesn't end when a new member joins. It ends only when a new member is enjoying being a Rotarian and never wants to leave! And making sure that our clubs are enjoyable places to be is a key part of growing membership. People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but they stay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. So I want to remind all of you to have fun in your clubs and your districts. Rotary is based on the idea that our service is more effective when we serve together with our friends. So let's enjoy our Rotary service, share it with others, and Light Up Rotary together!

Message of District Governor
W
SHAHBAZ QURESHI District Governor 2014-15
elcome to the 2nd month of the Rotary year 2014-2015. Achieving Light Up Rotary with the preceding month, we received immense response from all over the world. Implementing the T-E-A-C-H program & aligning beliefs that reinstate hope in every member & non-member alike, ROTARY has made a mark in its first quarter of the year 2014-2015. Through this program, eradicating illiteracy & enhancing humanitarian services to highlight Pakistan as a major contributor to ROTARY's universal goals and aims is how the month of July followed up. I am pleased to represent as the District Governor & incorporate efforts to raise the education standard bar in Pakistan. Let us keep going on with unity, faith & discipline to further develop a year to remember for achievements! August is Membership Month, which means it's time to celebrate your Rotary club, your members, and the good you do in your community and around the world. This is the month where we dwell on our past achievements and increase our efforts for the future. Each year Rotary clubs around the world grow in strength and size. By this year, there are 34,282 clubs hosting 1.2 million members worldwide. As we grow in number, we are able to increase the number of lives we affect with our programs. And this month, our aim is to grow Rotary like never before. Bringing new members to your Rotary club is an integral part of assuring its sustainability and future. New members can re-energize your club with new ideas, ways of doing things, and different skills. Existing members can become more engaged through new members by being involved in their new member orientation to your Rotary club as a mentor. I believe attracting more women members is a major factor to ensure Rotary's future. Women have long proven their worth at the community and international level, leading in a multitude of professions and excelling at the highest professional level. Achieving growth is not only about attracting new members, it is also about keeping existing members. Member engagement is integral to member retention. So I've proposed to have ourselves always in the know-how of what is going on within Rotary & outside, to ensure the flow of information and that every member has their name to the contribution. I shall end by stating the obvious yet most important, that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Therefore, it is our right to take what this world has to offer, but at the same time give something back. No one has ever become poor by giving. By doing so, even after we depart from this world, we would have left a footprint through the acts of kindness and the help we have provided. What we give away, will be the wealth we take with us to the afterlife.

2. Introduce
Introduce prospective members to Rotary by informing them about Rotary International's programs and your club's service efforts. Compile this information in a club profile that can be presented to visitors or inserted into copies of the “This Is Rotary brochure and given to all visitors. A recent issue of The Rotarian or a Rotary regional magazine is also a good introduction to Rotary. A prospective member who has been introduced to Rotary by enthusiastic Rotarians and is informed about the club's projects before joining is more likely to become involved and remain active.

Inform new members about your club and RI by focusing on the following areas:
3. Invite
u
Benefits of membership
u
Responsibilities of membership
u
Opportunities for service
Consider scheduling a formal orientation program in several sessions to enhance retention of information. During the first six months, new members can expand their understanding of Rotary in these ways:
Invite a prospective member to become a club member with a personal visit from both the proposer and a member of the club's membership committee. This two-person visit provides the prospective member with a second contact in the club, one who brings additional Rotary knowledge and experience. Rotarians extending the invitation should know the personal interests and abilities of the prospective member in order to point out relevant club activities and projects.

u Have a new member serve as a delegate to the District Conference to learn about the world of Rotary and the projects being done outside of your club. Some clubs assist the new member by paying part or all of the registration fees and costs of the conference. After the conference, ask the new member to give a report to the club.
- This Is Rotary (001-EN) - What's Rotary? (419-EN) - The Rotary Foundation Quick Reference Guide (219-EN) u
Visiting the Rotary E-Learning Center at www.rotary.org

- Committee meeting u
Completing one or more of the following tasks: - Give a classification talk at a club meeting. - Make up a meeting at another club.
u
- Invite a guest to a club meeting or propose a new member.
Clubs should have a continuing Rotary education policy in place to keep existing members up-to-date on Rotary and the club. Such a program would include:
Attending one or more district meetings (listed in order of priority):
u
Frequent communication of Rotary International and club news and information
u
Four or more weekly club programs a year focused on continuing education
u
Participation of club members in multi-district meetings that address continuing education
u
At least two club assemblies a year focused on education
u
District-level seminars on continuing education
u
Sharing of ideas and information on Rotary programs, projects, and activities at committee meetings
u
Attendance of club members at meetings of other clubs

Choosing a club committee on which to serve See New Member Orientation (414-EN) for more ideas.
6. Involve
Involve new members in club committees, activities, fundraisers, board meetings, weekly club meetings, and social activities. An involved member will feel a part of the club and make Rotary a personal priority. Consider the following methods of getting members involved in club activities: u
Assign a new member to be a greeter, take attendance, or introduce a new speaker.
Assign new members to a committee, or give them a weekly meeting assignment.
u Create special name badges for new members to wear for one year. Encourage other members to look for the badges and make an extra effort to talk with the new members.

M
suggestion, a joint meeting of women in Rotary was held in May 2014, which was quite successful. Women Rotarians shared their success stories and pledged to increase the membership of women in Rotary. Every Rotarian should invite their spouse into Rotary. Make Rotary for the whole family.
e m b e r s h i p Development is an important issue which needs special attention of all the clubs in the District. In April 2014, I was designated as Assistant Rotary Coordinator, Rotary International Zone 6B. Zone 6B comprises RID 3271 & By PDG M. Iqbal Qureshi 3272(Pakistan), RID 3281 & Assistant Rotary Coordinator 3282 (Bangladesh), RID RI Zone 6B 3300 (Malaysia), RID 3310 (Brunei & parts of Malaysia & Singapore), RID 3330 & 3340 (Thailand), RID 3350 (Thailand and Cambodia), RID 3360 (Laos). I have been assigned
When I assumed my responsibilities in July, I have started coordination with District leaderships of 3271 & 3272 as well as at club levels and highlighted the importance of membership development. Rotarians all around the world observe Membership and Extension Month in August every year. Membership is the 'single most important thing' in Rotary. Without members, we cannot contribute to Foundation. Without members, we cannot continue to provide 'service above self'. Without members, the good that Rotary does at home and around the world would disappear. Rotary works because it is built on members who understand the value of service.
RID 3271 & 3272. A Regional Meeting on Membership Planning & Joint Seminar and Training was held at Bangkok,Thailandon 22ndand 23rd April 2014. RRFCs, RCs, RIPCs, ARCs, DGs, DGEs and DGNs from all over the Zone 6B (South East Asia) participated in the meeting.
Membership in Rotary is an honour and a privilege and, with all things worth doing in life, it comes with duties and responsibilities. Membership growth is a constant challenge.Growing our membership is the responsibility of all Rotarians - not merely to increase the numbers on an annual report but to share the gift of Rotary.
The meeting was convened by RID Saowalak Rattanavich. RRFC Faiz Kidwai, incoming RRFC Rafique Siddique, RPIC Rajendra and RC Saleem Raza also took active part in organizing the training seminar.PRID Noraseth Pathmanad who is also Major Gift Advisor for the zone was also present and presented avery motivationa laddress to all. Where as RRFC Faiz Kidwai presented high performance awards to various districts in the zone.
One of Rotary's greatest strengths is its diversity; Diversity in vocations and professions, diversity in gender, and diversity in ethnicity. Yet the very thing that makes Rotary attractive, makes membership development difficult. As we encourage professionals to join Rotary from across generational, gender, and ethnic boundaries, diversity will challenge us to understand how to effectively recruit them, and involve them in Rotary.
In this event, many important issues related to Zone 6B were highlighted and discussed at length which include five years trend and current overall picture of Zone 6B Membership towards 2013-14 goals, Regional Membership Plan for 2014-15: Budget and Action plan, Membership Awards (2014-15), besides there were also some joint plenary sessions in which action plans pertaining to foundation were discussed. Membership of women in Rotary is quite low and particularly in Districts 3271 & 3272. As per my
If we kept every new member who joined Rotary, we wouldn't need to talk about membership anymore. We get plenty of new members in Rotary every year - about 120,000. But every year, just about that many members leave. And that's why our numbers have stayed the same, at about 1.2 million members,
11
Importance of Membership Development
for more than 15 years. It's time to do something about it - not just talk about it but actually do something about it. The first thing we need to do is take a look at those who are leaving and find out why they're leaving and what, if anything, we can do about it. We are committed to seeing Rotary membership climb to 1.3 million by 2015.
The Object Of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
I have a question in my mind that Why not we have 1.5 million Rotarians? Why not 5 million? Rotary is a vast, private United Nations - the most powerful, prestigious, important organization of competent community leaders the world has ever known. In the words of Albert Schweitzer, “Rotary is necessary for the future.”
First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; Second. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
We need to work on bringing younger members into Rotary - making sure that today's Rotaractors, Interactors, RYLArians, Youth Exchange students, Foundation Scholars, and Group Study Exchange team members become tomorrow's Rotarians.
Third. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
Yes, New Generations Service is an integral part of Rotary. But just as future generations depend on Rotary, Rotary depends on them. We must continue to grow, to create new Rotarians. After all, it is the next generation of Rotarians that will continue our good work. And while we have much to offer - our commitment, our wisdom, our experience - there is much we can learn from them as well.
Fourth. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
Members will feel more a part of the club and Rotary's mission if they are kept abreast of changes and events. I suggest using your club and district Web sites, weekly meetings and e-mails, and club bulletins to share information from your district governor or the RI Secretariat.
The 4-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do : • Is it the TRUTH ? • Is it FAIR to all concerned? • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Rotary's success can only be achieved through a membership that has fully engaged their head, heart, and hands in service to their work, family, friends, and mankind. The more membership increases the more Rotary will prosper in our region.
