The Month of rabi'uth thani Looking into the words: Rabi' which denotes spring and u’th-Thani which means second, it tells us that this is the second month of spring. Also known as Rabi’ul Akhir, it is during this month that spring was ending and that fruits would ripen and the crops would be ready to harvest. Historical events during the month of Rabi'uth Thani: • It was during the 9th year of Hijrah that 'Ali ibn Abi Talib r.a who was sent by Rasulullah ()ﷺ, marched with an army to the land of Tayyi' (Tayy Tribe). The purpose of this expedition was to destroy the idol, Al-Fuls, which 'Ali ibn Abi Talib r.a had demolished.
While there are no significant events or acts of worship that has been prescribed in accordance to the syari’ah for Rabiu’th Thani, let us strive to be better Muslims by: Fasting every Mondays and Thursdays Aishah RA narrated: "The Prophet used to try to fast on Mondays and Thursdays." (Sahih) Reference: Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 745. In-Book Reference: Book 8, Hadith 64. Once you have achieved it this month, let’s do it next month and keep it consistent! 5

malaikah: An introduction An introduction of the angels and their duties.
"[All] praise is [due] to Allah , Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent." Al-Quran, Surah Fatir 35:1 Believing in Al-Malaikah or the Angels, is fundamental. It is the second article of faith. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala describes the angels, as shown in the above ayah (verse), as creations "having wings, two or three or four." Malaikah are created from light and we are not able to see them. They are spiritual beings. They have no gender. They do not require food, drink or sleep. Neither do they have physical nor material needs like us humans. They are truly obedient to Allah s.w.t, doing whatever they are ordained to do. Each of them is tasked with certain duty. In the Quran, Allah s.w.t made mention that angels have been created to worship Him and carry out His commands: "Everything in the heavens and every creature on the earth prostrates to Allah, as do the angels. They are not puffed up with pride. They fear their Lord above them and do everything they are ordered to do". (Al-Quran, An-Nahl 16:49-50)
Jibril: To deliver the Divine Revelations from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to His chosen Messengers from among the prophets alayhum salam. Mikail: To deliver man’s rizq (sustenance) and bring forth rain Israfil: To blow the Trumpet: once, for the destruction of the universe; and again, for the resurrection of all accountable beings to face Judgment Day. Izrail: Angel of Death, who does not delay nor expedite the time of claiming the soul. Munkar: To question the dead in the grave. Nankir: To question the dead in the grave. Ridwan: Guardian of Paradise, who welcomes the Prophets alayhum salam and the righteous servants who have been blessed by Allah subhanahu wa Ta’ala. Maalik: Guardian of hell, an unwelcome sight, for the wretched dwellers of the eternal fire. Raqib: Sits on man’s left shoulder to record the evil deeds.
The Angels are many in numbers. Only Allah s.w.t knows the exact number of Angels He has created. Here are 10 Angels- their names and the duties in which they carry out:
Atid: Sits on man’s right shoulder to record the good deeds. 11
iman & the angels Words Nurie Arba'ah 12
If the sun were to remain high up in the sky throughout our lives, that would be a recipe for disaster. There will be no balance, the heat and sunrays it emits will destroy more things than we can imagine. At which time of the day would we find ourselves sleeping then? Hence, He made its nature to rise and set – daily. With such intricacy, He has also created something else to rise and set - our iman. Upon the second article of faith, is having iman of the malaikah. We can learn so much from them. They are the ones who heed and obey every of Allah’s command without questioning. They are far from arrogant with no nafs and they pray for us believers to be forgiven by Him. “They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.” – Al-Quran, An-Nahl 16:50 In Surah At-Tahrim Verse Six: they [angels] do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded. If granted our level of obedience is comparable to theirs, heaven will not be a challenge for us. But who are we kidding? We know that malaikah is the epitome of perfection in obedience – they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded. 'A'isha reported that Allah's Messenger sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam said: The Angels were born out of light and the Jinns were born out of the spark of fire and Adam was born as he has been defined (in the Qur'an) for you (i. e. he is fashioned out of clay). It is akin to comparing apple to orange; while we are His creation, we are different. But let us take wisdom from their being. How is it that we can attain iman that is constantly growing, bringing us closer to Allah? Is that even possible with the tides of iman constantly fluctuating? Do you remind yourself that every of your action is for Allah? Have you been living for the sake of Allah? Or do you take days off from it unknowingly? Are you arrogant? Do you roll your eyes when someone blocks your way while you are in a rush? Are you a victim of this dunya, delaying or even neglecting your fardh prayers? Do you get angry, cuss and vent it all on Twitter? How do you respond when something does not go your way? Certainly it is not going your way but it is most definitely according to Allah’s way. Think. Yes, iman fluctuates. But what is iman? How does one measure his iman? With iman, you will feel that nothing is impossible and that you are going to own everything that comes at you - no matter the work load, study assignments or even tolerating the things you do not fancy. Alhamdulillah, you will feel really good about yourself. In other words, you are a pocket full of positivity with the presence of iman. Then one day, you wake up and it is the total opposite. No amount of strength can be mustered to help you pull through the day – that’s when you settle for Medical Certificates or simply, resign from your daily routines. All connection you have had with Allah will seem bleak and you will feel lost. Without a reason, you will feel depressed and easily agitated. Sounds familiar? Some call it a struggle, but to put things into perspective, it is Allah’s
call for you to be closer to Him. For the 4th month of the Islamic Calendar, here are 4 tips you can take away: 1. Be organised There must be an underlying reason that led you into feeling disconnected. Take this chance to reorganise by making a list. Jot down your duties and responsibilities, realise what is it that you have been practicing daily and what you have been neglecting. On a day-to-day basis, you may have planned too little or planned too much. When you fail to keep yourself occupied, you will feel unproductive and when you stretch yourself just a little too much, you welcome migraine and stress. Have an organiser and make a list or anything that will help you in planning your day/week/month. Most importantly, be realistic. Strike balance. 2. Reach out for Al-Quran This will never get old. The love letters that Allah has given us transcends generations; it was meant for Rasulullah's S.A.W time, it is meant for us now and it will definitely be applicable for the ones reciting in the future. That being said, the Quran is always in fashion. Take it, open it up and recite anything that your eye sets on first. Then read its meaning and relate whatever you have read to the current world and your life. You have no excuse; download the Quran application in your smartphone. Help yourself. “Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” – Al-Quran, Ar-Ra'd 13:11 3. Be with the “good group” The “good group” consists of people whose focus is inclusive of akhirah. Striving for excellence in both dunya and akhirah, you will find them encouraging you to be smarter in the way of Allah. They will not take you out for the next party or to the movies. They will listen to you and you are able to share, learn and not feel judged or belittled to express your frustrations, aspirations and dreams. Dragging you to the next Islamic Event, they will also share with you some verses from the Quran and/or hadiths which will help you to put things into perspective. When you seek the company of this “good group”, you will walk away wanting to be a better person. "Three things will increase your intellect: sitting with the scholars, sitting with righteous people, and leaving off speech that doesn’t concern you." - Imam Ash-Shafi'ee 4. Increase in your deeds, privately With intentions being for the sake of Allah, give charity, help others who are in need, smile at others while you are waiting for the train at the MRT Station, volunteer in a setting where no one knows you and wake up for tahajjud. Do all that in anonymity. “Hide your good deeds more than you hide your bad deeds.” – Abu Hazim The sun will set and by Allah, it will rise the next morning. May Allah guide us in this pursuit to have our hearts close to Him for our hearts belong to Him; hold on to the rope of iman. 13

recording in progress “Wa maa sumiyal insaanu illa linisyaanihi” Words Nisa’ Tuzzakirah Find Nzakrh.blogspot.sg
“Wa maa sumiyal insaanu illa linisyaanihi” Surely, humans won't be named so except for the reason that he is forgetful. The word “insaan” in Arabic, meaning human, was derived from the word “nasiya” which means “forget”, and it is only nature for human beings to be forgetful.
worshipping Allah and carrying out His commands. Angels, or in Arabic “malaa'ikah” have no free choice, so it is simply not in their nature to disobey. They are also genderless and do not require sleep, food, or drink. Angels are involved in carrying out duties in both the unseen and physical worlds and there is no rest nor flaw in their completion of tasks, and for these two angels- there is no mistake in recording your deeds.
Being forgetful can be both a blessing and otherwise. If humans were not created in a state that one easily forgets, then he would be living with all his bad memories etched close to his mind, unable to erase them off. When he repents, his bad deeds would haunt him to a dark corner. In that case, being able to forget is a blessing.
Too busy rushing through our lives, the fact that every single word uttered and every step made is recorded without making a single mistake, often slips our minds. Everything appears as blurred images as we rush by, trying to catch the next bus or to get to the next class, we forget that other than being looked after, we are being looked upon.
On the other hand, forgetting certain things might cause you some trouble. Like forgetting to turn off the stove; as the whole house could be set on fire and burnt down.
Once a person forgets the fact that his deeds are being taken note of and that he would be rewarded or punished accordingly, he would do as he like. An angry person could be tempted to kill another, but at the thought of tarnishing his records and the possibility of being sentenced to death, he turns the thought away. What would happen if in the state of anger he forgets the consequence he might have to face? The person would most probably proceed with doing things as he please, regardless of what might be coming next.
Our raw flesh could also be set on fire one day, if we forget one thing- the recording of deeds for as long as we are breathing. Allah s.w.t mentioned in Surah Al-Infitar, verses 10-11 “But verily, over you (are appointed angels in charge of humankind) to watch you, Kiraaman kaatibeen – honourable and writing down (your deeds).” The term “Kiraaman Kaatibeen” used in the verse refers to the angels Raqeeb and Ateed, the two angels sitting up on our shoulders, always ready to record every single action we make. Like every angel created by Allah 'azza wa jall, Raqeeb and Ateed are naturally obedient creatures, 16
Why do Allah need these angels to record our deeds, though, when He knows of every single thing that walks on the earth, or fly through the sky? Allah has created us and everything around us, and He knows everything really well. He knows our abilities even before He creates us. There is no
need at all for Him to see our action in order to know them as He knows them before we intend to make a move. Yet, He sends to each one of us these two angels to record what we do. Since He does not need that record, there must be a different use for it. On the Day of Judgment, every one of us will be asked about his deeds. We will be rewarded for our good deeds and punished for the bad ones, unless He forgives us. When we stand in front of Allah on the Day of Judgment, He will tell us everything that we have done throughout our entire life. Some of us may think that they could escape punishment by a simple denial of any bad deeds. They will begin to swear in front of Allah s.w.t that they did not do those things and Allah will then command the angels to produce those records. When we see them, none of us will be able to deny anything. This means that the record is kept for us, not for Allah’s sake. Allah does not need them, but we would be shown everything that has been documented as it took place. After all, who else would know of His creations best but trehe Creator Himself? And because Allah s.w.t knows every weakness of ours, one of them being our forgetfulness, He made the recording system very easy on us. It has been narrated in a hadeeth, on the authority of Ibnu Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with both of them): on the authority of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him) from among the sayings that he related from His Lord (glorified and exalted be He) is that He said, “Verily, Allah recorded the good deeds and the evil deeds. Then He clarified how [that recording should occur:] whoever decided to do a good deed but he does not do it, Allah records it with Him as one complete good deed. And if he decided to do it and actually does it, Allah
records it with Him as ten good deeds up to seven hundred up to many times over. If he decided to do an evil deed but he does not do it, Allah records it with Him as one complete good deed. If he decided to do it and he actually does it, Allah records it as one evil deed.” (Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim) If an evil thought occurs unintentionally to mind and the person does not take his thought to action, in light of the above quoted hadeeth, there is no sin recorded against the person in his Book of Records. Allah SWT's mercy is such that if it occurs to one to do an evil act, but he does not actually do it, Allah SWT forgives the person, and the Angels does not record it. And if the person refrains from doing the evil only for the Sake and Fear of Allah, not only does the Lord Most Gracious forgive him his fault, but it is recorded as a good deed, subhaanAllah. His mercy, however, does not stop just there. For every recorded sin, there is a way out called 'tawbah' or repentance. In repenting, He makes it even more lighter on us, not only by wiping off our bad deeds from the record if we do, but by replacing our sins with good deeds, as He mentioned in the Quran, Surah Al-Furqan, verse 70: “Except him who repents and believes and does good deeds; so these are they of whom Allah changes the evil deeds to good ones; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” Similar to many other things in Islaam, Allah s.w.t made a lot of things easy for us. From praying to when we face difficulty in performing it, to the recording of our deeds and when we repent for our sins. What's left to do is entirely up to us. Listen to the ticking of your clock, we don't have much time left. With every single heartbeat, there is a recording in progress. 17
always with you “In majlis ‘ilm, you are never alone, no matter how lonely it seems. The Angels are always with you.” Words Nur Khalisah Find warmlemondrops.wordpress.com

No matter how many times I practiced at home, nothing could ever prepare me for the real thing. I had never prayed in my whole life, let alone make a dua. At home, I spent weeks practicing how to pray, with the guide of a prayer book I bought while covering half of my face. I was ashamed – it was as though people could see through me, as if they knew I did not pray. I looked through the book thoroughly, cringed at the amount of recitations that was foreign to my ears. As weeks passed, I got better at it.
the ground, in unison with the takbeer. It was the very first time I called myself Muslim, and for the very first time, I have never felt so lonely.
And then one day, I walked past the mosque nearby my house. There were youths standing outside, holding stacks of paper. I looked down and started walking fast, but I could not avoid them. A hand reached out to me, as if to stop me from walking. I could have just walked and ignore, but something in me made me stop. The hand belonged to a young lady with eyes so sincere I could feel it in my heart. I took the slip of paper she handed me and walked off.
It was empty, and there was only one chair at the very back of the class. I was afraid I was in the wrong classroom, but a copy of the flyer was pasted right smack onto the door. The classroom was extremely bright! I looked at the ceiling, but it held normal fluorescent lights. It was night time too - why is it so bright inside? I took the seat at the back. A gust of wind cooled the room – but the windows were closed shut. The Ustaz in front was smiling, looking around in the room, never at me directly. What was happening?
“Insha’Allah I’ll see you there, sister!” Her voice echoed in my head all the way home. I reached home and sprawled on the sofa. It was then that I looked at the paper, and it was then that my eyes shed tears – for the first time in years. It was a flyer, promoting a free class on how to pray, conducted at the nearby mosque. How did she know? How did she know I needed help so badly? I almost believed Allah heard me. But…how can He? I haven’t been a good Muslim. I never planned to attend the class. I was afraid – I had no friends who would want to accompany me. But I guess He had better plans for me, because on the night of the class, I found myself at the gates of His house, fidgeting at the entrance nervously. It was the first time I stepped into a mosque. It was the first time I sat among the crowd, clad in their hijab - a sea of colorful heads surrounding me. It was also the first time I ever curved my palms and joined in the recitation of the prayers. It was the first time I ever placed my forehead on
I knew no one. Not even one familiar face of a neighbor, or an acquaintance. After the congregation prayers I quickly grabbed my things and turned to rush home. But suddenly there was a massive human traffic blocking my way – women, young and old, blocking the only exit in the prayer hall. My heart was beating fast – did He really want me to be here? Slowly I made my way into the classroom.
“What a full class! Alhamdulillah, thank you so much for coming! But before I start, I want you to close your eyes and relax. Put away all your thoughts and focus on me.” The Ustaz’s voice was soothing. I closed my eyes and listened closely. “It might be the first time you attend a class like this, or it might be the first time you heard of praying. But whatever it is, please don’t worry. If you think you are alone, then you are wrong. Did you know? Each step you took to reach this classroom, the Angels are recording? Each time you thought of praying, the Angels are listening? And did you know, right here, right now, the Angels are with us, sitting very closely? The blessed Angels, they have always and will always be in your company. “Angel Raqib – always on your left shoulder, recording down every bad deed that you do. On your right shoulder, you have Angel Atid, recording down every good deed you have done. Every good deed is recorded with 19
tenfold of goodness, while every bad deed is recorded as only one. These Angels - they never miss anything that you do. “So believe me when I say that this room is full of the blessed Angels. Made from Light, indeed, tonight, they made this room bright. May this introductory class be the first step to us being better Muslims insha’Allah,” Ustaz ended his welcoming speech. Slowly the coolness of the classroom disappeared, and I could hear little whispers, here and there. Scraping of the chairs at the front of the class, and nervous coughs at my side. I opened my eyes. The classroom was full of people! Youths like me, with pale and nervous faces, looking anxiously all around. My eyes widened – since when were there people? When did the blinding brightness disappear? Where did all these people come from? Was I dreaming all along? Suddenly, an elbow nudged me from my right. I turned and saw the girl who handed me the flyer. “Assalamu’alaikum! You came! What’s your name?” She took my hand in a salaam and beamed. At that exact moment, my heart melted from all the blessings I have received, in just one night. What about all the other blessings all I have gotten in my life? I was not sure if I ever realized they were blessings. But as of right now, there is one thing that I am sure of – this class would be the very first step for me to become a better Muslim. And the best part is that, my Angels – they are and will always be with me.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said: “Allah (glorified and exalted be He) has supernumerary angels who rove about seeking out gatherings in which Allah’s name is being invoked: they sit with them and fold their wings round 20
each other, filling in that which is between them and between the lowest heaven. When [the people in the gathering] depart, [the angels] ascend and rise up to heaven.” He (the Prophet - peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Then Allah (mighty and sublime be He) asks them - [though] He is most knowing about them, ‘From where have you come?’ And they say, ‘We have come from some servants of Yours on Earth: they were glorifying You (Subhana llah), exalting you (Allahu akbar), witnessing that there is no god but You (La ilaha illa llah), praising You (Al-Hamdu lillah), and asking [favours] of You.’ He says, ‘And what do they ask of Me?’ They say, ‘They ask of You Your Paradise.’ He says, ‘And have they seen My Paradise?’ They say, 'No, O Lord.’ He says, ‘And how would it be were they to have seen My Paradise!’ They say, ‘And they ask protection of You.’ He says, ‘From what do they ask protection of Me?’ They say, 'From Your Hell-fire, O Lord.’ He says, ‘And have they seen My Hell-fire?’ They say, ‘No.’ He says, ‘And how would it be were they to have seen My Hellfire!’ They say, ‘And they ask for Your forgiveness.’” He (the Prophet - peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Then He says, ‘I have forgiven them and I have bestowed upon them what they have asked for, and I have granted them sanctuary from that from which they asked protection.’” He (the Prophet - peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “They say, ‘O Lord, among them is So-and-so, a much sinning servant, who was merely passing by and sat down with them.’” He (the Prophet - peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “And He says, ‘And to him [too] I have given forgiveness: he who sits with such people shall not suffer.’” Related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari, at-Tirmidhi, and an-Nasa’i).
did you know? Being grateful to Allah
"And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah , you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.” (Surah Ibrahim 14:34) As Allah subhaanahu wa ta’aala clearly mention in the above ayah, we will never be able to count His blessings. We are not aware of some of the favours bestowed upon us, how then, can we even count them? Here’s sharing with you some of the blessings that some of us may have overlooked because we tend to take them for granted. A continuation from our Anniversary issue, Muharram/Safar 1435 issue #07.

6. Allah’s Mercy Exceeding His Wrath On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When Allah decreed the creation He pledged Himself by writing in His book which is laid down with Him: ‘My mercy prevails over my wrath’” Hadith Qudsi, related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari, an-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah)
22
7. The Gift Of Repentance Allah Subhannah wa ta’aala has left the door of repentance open for us for as long as we are alive. When we sincerely repent, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala promises us in the Qur’an that all our previous sins are changed into good deeds. SubhannAllah! What a gift repentance is.
23
8. The Descent Of Allah To The Lowest Heaven Every Night Abu Hurairah radiAllahu 'ahnu narrated that Allah’s Messenger, sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said: 'In the last third of every night our Rabb (Cherisher and Sustainer) (Allah Subhannahu wa ta’aala) descends to the lowermost heaven and says; "Who is calling Me, so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that may I grant him? Who is seeking forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him?'” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith Qudsi)
24
9. The covering of faults One of the attributes of Allah Subhannahu wa ta’aala is Al Ghafur, the Forgiver and Hider of Faults. To have your faults and shame hidden, covered up, is indeed one of the greatest blessings one can be grateful for.
25
10. The reward for being grateful And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' " (Al-Quran, Surah Ibrahim, 14:7)
26
Abu Hurairah narrated that: The Messenger of Allah S.A.W said: "When the deceased - or he said when one of you - is buried, two angels, black and blue come to him. One of them is called Al-Munkar, and the other An-Nakir. They say: 'What did you used to say about this man?' So he says what he was saying (before death) 'He is Allah's slave and His Messenger. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.' So they say: 'We knew that you would say this.' Then his grave is expanded to seventy by seventy cubits, then it is illuminated for him. Then it is said to him: 'Sleep.' So he said: 'Can I return to my family to inform them?' They say: 'Sleep as a newlywed, whom none awakens but the dearest of his family.' Until Allah resurrects him from his resting place." "If he was a hypocrite he would say: 'I heard people saying something, so I said the same; I do not know.' So they said: 'We knew you would say that.' So the earth is told: 'Constrict him.' So it constricts around him, squeezing his ribs together. He continues being punished like that until Allah resurrects him from his resting place." At-Tirmidhi: Vol. 2, Book 5, Hadith 1071

meet
Strictly Shawlz Kick started in December 2012, Strictly Shawlz has since made its name in the Hijab fashion scene in Singapore. MIRROR had the privilege of meeting Huda, the co-founder, to get to know a little more about the company.
28
“Our main priority is in understanding our customers’ needs and the struggles they face in wearing the hijab daily.”
Why the name Strictly Shawlz? Our business plan is to focus and sell hijabs only as a start. As our intended market is for both Muslims and Non-Muslims and also both women and men, we had to decide on a neutral name, thus the Shawlz. The Z instead of S is to indicate our ‘hippieness’ and differentiate us from the competition. During our brainstorming sessions, we came across a trendy restaurant that sells only pancakes, which is reflected in their name, and we were inspired by it. Our belief is that by focusing on just one thing, which is shawls, we are able to deliver quality products with exceptional customer service. Huda Hamid and partner Amirul Azam
Assalamu'alaikum. Thank you sister Huda for taking some time off your busy schedule to have a little chat with us. Could you share with us the story of strictly shawlz, how it all began? Launched online on 12 December 2012, Strictly Shawlz came into establishment by its two founders, myself, Huda Hamid and my partner Amirul Azam. Strictly Shawlz is actually a sister company of Noruyo Creations, a premium stationery online business. Shawls have long dominated the fashion industry in Singapore, particularly by the Muslimahs who don the hijab, commonly known as Hijabis or Hijabers. A Hijaber myself, I came together with Azam to form Strictly Shawlz with the aim of providing unique and colourful shawlz to the local market. Strictly Shawlz was inspired by readings of fashion magazines and blogs across the borders in Malaysia and Indonesia. I’m a fan of Dian Pelangi and the Hijab Fashion in both Indonesia and Malaysia, so I was inspired to be just like them. It has always been my dream to be in the fashion industry, but I had never imagined being able to form this together with my partner, Azam.
Does strictly shawlz ship internationally? We provide free registered mail for our customers in Singapore to ensure our shawlz are delivered on time. We also provide shipping for our international customers. So far we have shipped our shawlz to our fans in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia.
What are the plans for Strictly Shawlz in the near future? We aim to design and produce our own collections of shawlz instead of just relying on our suppliers. Our main priority is in understanding our customers’ needs and the struggles they face in wearing the hijab daily. Thus designing our own collection enables us to produce shawlz that are comfortable to wear and stylish at the same time. Our first endeavour was our Syawwal collection, which was promptly snapped up by our customers.
Thank you sister Huda once again. May Allah grant Strictly Shawlz further success, in the effort of assisting our sisters in dressing up modestly. Amin.
Alhamdulillah, starting from this issue onwards, MIRROR is collaborating with Strictly Shawlz in our Hidden Beauty segment. Sisters, check it out. ;) 29
food Milk
“And verily! In the cattle, there is a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their stomachs, from between excretions and blood, pure milk; palatable to the drinkers. Surah An-Naml, verse 66

Words & Pictures Nisa’ Tuzzakirah Find 2
Milk is indeed one of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W's most favourite drink. The Prophet S.A.W said that milk wipes away heat from the heart just as the finger wipes away sweat from the brow. It strengthens the back, increases the brain, augments intelligence, renews vision & drives away forgetfulness. He also mentioned, as narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'oud, Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said: "Drink cow milk, for cows graze on every kind of plant." (Sunan)

Despite the many benefits to drinking milk, there are some who can't stand the smell, let alone the taste of it. Some prefer chocolate milk, strawberry, or even milkshakes. So here's one delicious (and healthy!) alternative for those who refuse to drink milk. Enjoy!
Chocolate Almond Banana Smoothie (serves 1)
Ingredients: -1 banana, sliced and frozen -1 cup of almond milk (can be substituted with chocolate milk) -1/4 cup of oats/wholegrain oats
3
**Ripe banana gives this delicious smoothie body and light sweetness without the addition of sugar or other refined sweetener. For a sweeter drink, you can add 3 to 4 pitted dates and blend for 1 minute. Using frozen banana makes the drink cold and extra thick, but an unfrozen banana works well too with the addition of an ice cube. Method: Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and serve immediately.

health Eat Good
"O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship." Al-Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172

Words Nur Syazreema Find cheriemore.blogspot.sg
How do you eat a nutritious diet while keeping your expenditure low? Majority thought that healthy food are always pricey but do not fret about it! I have some good news to share – cheap eats are not necessarily unhealthy! Eating healthy is very important for hundreds of reasons. It helps people fight off sickness, have energy, stay at a healthy body weight and much more. One of the ways in cutting cost while eating healthily is to consume your meals at home. You can simply grab any feed refrigerated from the kitchen and cook them into something nutritious! But hey, remember to add in some robust ingredients such as vegetables, whole grains and beans. Here are some alternatives that you can choose from in improving your diet scheme. Sometimes, you just need to change a little bit here and there to get it right. Have a try! Brown Rice Instead of having a full serving of white rice, try mixing them with brown rice! According to a study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, brown rice is the top choice in terms of both nutritional and other inherent healthy benefits. It is actually the unrefined version of white rice which is easier to digest as it is much lighter in the stomach. Brown rice is rich in anti-oxidants, high in fiber and what’s more exciting, it also promotes weight loss! Whole-Wheat Bread It is best if you could get a 100% whole-wheat bread or pita. If you are not a fan of breads, you can substitute it with multigrain pasta. Wholegrains actually contain the bran and germ of the grain which have more nutrients. They are absorbed more slowly than food made from enriched flour thus raising the glucose and insulin levels less plus making you feel fuller longer. This could be your ideal breakfast or tea meal too. You can top it off with some fruit jams or simply eat it plain! Oats The best food to have in the morning would be oatmeal. Not the instant ones but the old-fashioned kind. It may not taste as good, but you can always use your creativity in making your breakfast a delicious one. Oatmeal can help keep your body strong and lean because it is full of fiber which keeps your cholesterol lowered, metabolism regulated and blood sugar levels stable which translate that you would not get hungry quickly. It also keeps your immune system healthy so you can fight off
infections or illnesses. If baking is your thing, you can also add oats into your cake batter or use it as toppings! Soybeans Soybeans can be eaten as a snack, appetizers or as a side dish with your meal. It can also be a substitute to anchovies and eggs in your fried rice. Soybean is hailed as the most protective bean. It has the highest protein content of 40 percent amongst plant products. Drinking a glass of soybean milk every day or eating some soybean based products can improve your body energy, intelligence (because of the lecithin content), can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, strengthen human tissues and organs, and even whiten your skin. So, instead of drinking coffee in the morning, let’s start drinking soybean for a healthier change! Yogurt Yogurt is great for a quick snack, fruit salads and smoothies. It is good for our body as it is made using active bacteria. The word “probiotics” is often associated with yogurt which means “for life”. It also refers to living organisms that can result in health benefits when eaten adequately. Opt for those non-fat Greek yogurts for a healthier choice. If they are too tasteless for you, add fruits or a teaspoon of honey for sweetness. Just like clothes, food can also be mixed and matched for a better result! From an Islamic perspective, health is viewed as one of the greatest blessings that Allah SWT has bestowed on mankind, as narrated in the following Hadith: “The final messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad S.A.W mounted the pulpit, then wept and said, "Ask Allah s.w.t for forgiveness and health, for after being granted certainty, one is given nothing better than health.’’ (Related Tirmidhi) In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 172, Allah s.w.t has reminded us, "O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship." Ergo, as fellow Muslims, eating healthy is important and we should not take this favour for granted. We should express gratitude to Allah SWT for blessing us with health and try our very best to look after it. Remember, we are accountable for our own body. Eat healthily, live happily! 33

muslim & the reading culture: leaving a legacy An introduction to reading
The words I spill to these pages will never suffice the reader into fully understanding the true status of reading, for it was the first revelation revealed to our beloved Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and it will remain as the essence of the Deen till the end of time.
Allah be upon him) said: “Part of the perfection of one's Islam is his leaving that which does not concern him.” (Related At-Tirmidhi. Hadith 12 from Imam An-Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)
Reading is for everyone. Know that the muslims have been honoured with the best of honours, and that is to be given the ability from Allah ‘Azzawajal to read and seek knowledge so that we may protect ourselves from the ignorance that surrounds us, and present the Truth to people around us. Sadly, this honour is not honoured by many muslims
The Qur’an. The Hadith of the prophet (peace be upon him), and the books by our pious predecessors. These books should lead us closer to Allah ‘Azzawajal, for it is through this books we find happiness, knowing that the scholars too, once tread the Straight Path, seeking the pleasure of Allah ‘Azzawajal by following the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) in the best way possible. The most important of all, we have our solah to read, for it will be the first thing that will be asked on the day of judgment.
“Read! In the Name of Your Lord” (Al-Quran, Al-'Alaq 96:1) Reading is a broad topic and the diversity that exists in its meaning gives much pleasure to those who seek to understand what it really means. Reading comes in many forms; people read books, but we also read - the body language of people, to understand their personality. We read ourselves so that we may correct our actions and thereby add more good deeds to our ‘book’. Coaches read games in order to understand the game plan. Businessmen read the forecast of the economy to understand the situation. Muslims read, and sadly today, we read what we are not supposed to read – other people’s lives, and what do I mean by that? We are spendthrifts. We waste a lot of our time today on social media, becoming nosy on matters that do not concern us. In a hadith. on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of
So, what’s left for us to read?
In a Hadith Qudsi, Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said, “Allah ‘Azzawajal says: ‘The first of his actions for which a servant of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayers (solah).' If they are in order, then he will have prospered and succeeded; and if they are wanting, then he will have failed and lost. If there is something defective in his obligatory prayers, the Lord (glorified and exalted be He) will say: 'See if My servant has any supererogatory prayers with which may be completed that which was defective in his obligatory prayers.' Then the rest of his actions will be judged in like fashion.” (Related At-Tirmidhi [also by Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and Ahmad]) We all have a choice: to be an intellect or an ignoramus. I can’t deny the fact that we love to read, but sometimes we read materials that do not benefit us. 35
“Everyone wants to change the world, but no one wants to read The Book.” So, what legacy will we leave for the future generations? I leave you with a poem you can ponder upon – Have you ever dove into the sea of words only to find yourself with another, who loves what you loves, and thinks like you – a partner for life you finally meet. And then you dive deeper Only to find another, and another Who share what you love. An ocean of readers, Quenching their thirst for knowledge; Bending their minds to correct their beliefs, Mending their hearts to clear the dirt beneath. I am a muslim, and I love for you to love what I love So that we may learn each other and walk together through the isle of books to seek His Pleasure. No matter the differences, it is knowledge that we seek, Using it as a means to get closer to Allah The Almighty. May these words be a means to move youForward and forever forward, to get to the top And enjoy the clearer view – of life and dunya, Of death and Akhirah. Remember that His mighty words are clear and true, And we should forever swim in His ocean, to enjoy the view Of the sunny skies and the clouds of blue. 36

The arts
nur nasuha ______________________ There are many ways to spread Islam, and Arts is definitely one of them. Meet Nur Nasuha Zakariah. A graduate of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts majoring in Western Painting, she has received several awards and is a recipient of the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award in 2012. Currently an Art Practitioner, her flair for visual arts is manifested by her outstanding artworks. Her works were recently curated and exhibited at Embryonic – an exhibition of young & emergent artists. MIRROR had the privilege of being invited to the exhibition and had the opportunity to have a chat with Nur Nasuha, as well as getting the chance to see first hand the wonderful art pieces. See for yourselves how stunning her works really are in the following pages, as we share with you Nur Nasuha's The Veil Series.
42
Here’s the little chat that we had with Nasuha:
How and when did this interest in painting started? It started since I was about 8 or 9. During my primary school days I just loved creating things and art naturally became my favourite subject.
What kind of paintings do you do and what are the subjects that you normally paint? I’m still exploring the different media but at the moment I’d say I prefer working with oil paint as compared to other media like acrylic, watercolour or charcoal. Subject wise, I would say that I’m still touching on the basic foundation of observational skills like still life and portraiture. Reason being it helps me to understand better what I’m technically good at in painting while I explore the styles of painting. This is also due to the practices I did in school, which has become something that I’m accustomed in. It’s basically more to self-exploration as an artist.
Well, I feel that it’s getting better here, the exposure for arts in Islam. For example calligraphy here is now a hit and we have activities and events related to the arts being held for example Syukran Circle, which happened late last year that brings creative Muslims together. It is a good way to spread and expand the Islamic Arts scene here. I really feel supported by this kind of art movement.
Words of advise to our readers who are keen on taking up a similar path. Personally, I would say that it’s good to keep on practising more on what you’re really good at. It may be sketching or doodling. Always keep a sketchbook. For a beginner, I think having a sketchbook really helps you to improve as an artist. Just keep calm, bismillah and draw or paint! InsyaAllah you’ll succeed.

We can see that most of your paintings centre on the theme of modesty and is very much Islamic. What drives you to create such paintings? The idea of a strong Muslimah I would say is one of the reasons why I like to focus on modesty. Because I always thought that my religion Islam is beautiful and I wanted to put that on canvas to visualize and give viewers a good perspective about Islam in itself, which means Peace. So I always thought of painting something that is aesthetically beautiful to the audience and focusing on colours used, such as white, which can mean purity, while gold and green to symbolize the beauty of Islam. I’ve always liked the idea of expression, both inward and outward of a person, a character or simply the beauty of His nature. What is the message that you would like the audience to take away from your paintings, especially the non-Muslims? Honestly, I’d say that I want the audience to see Islam in a perspective that Islam is welcoming, just like our greeting of “May peace be upon you”. Just to bring about the simplicity of Islam unlike the negativity that has been going around in the media in recent years. To help correct some of the misconceptions that people may have towards Islam.
What are the responses that you’ve gotten so far with regards to your artworks? Alhamdulillah. It has been quite overwhelming. Some really like it. The fact that they are just portraits of me, the works have been giving off a good impression of Muslims to the audience.
Based on your experience, how is Islamic Arts being accepted here in our small island? 43

My Walls You put your guards up high Just to let them crash flat to the ground Your lips quiver, you try hard not to cry You sat in the corner till you were found They said “it is okay, all is fine“ But what do they know about a heart that is blind? They said “let go, its all in your mind“ Is it so simple? To let it go – you just can’t Countless of times you built the wall And each time you just watch them fall “To reach the heavens, they have to be tall!” But after each fall – do you realise…? It is you who need the Call Repent, repent, repent, repent “It is so difficult – please lend me your hand!” Arms outstretched, “Just hold on tight!“ But, as always, there came a very debated fight between the waves of Nafs, and Nur – the light However, dear friend, please don’t worry Have faith, be strong, and fight the battle in fury! If your Imaan is strong, you will surely win But if it isn’t, then alas, you’ll gain another sin But…would you just give up and let things be? Our Lord is Most Merciful – why can’t you see? “If you take a step towards Him…He comes to you running!” Why then are you in doubts of winning? Focus on your path; make sure you don’t lose sight! Push and propel with all your might! If you fall, stand up tall, continue to fight! Because at the end of the tunnel, there will always, always, be light.

travelogue By Irfan Follow @feeamanillah on instagram
I searched for love and peace. I found Islam, and I found a curious traveller in myself through it. With Allah’s will, I seem to thrive in solitude and the observance of strangers, and in no better place could I find solace and wisdom through it other than in mosques. Every mosque has its own serenity and tranquility to it. At least, just at least a congregational prayer with humility and sincerity of the heart, being submissive, with understanding and purpose; only Allah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) understands the wonders He brings with it, filling me each day. Hence this is my journey to each and every mosques there is in Singapore InsyaAllah. May Allah (Glorified and Exalted Be He) guide me in this lonesome yet purposeful journey with my ever-faithful Vespa.

Assyafaah Mosque Ever since I was posted to Sembawang Camp for the rest of my National Service journey, this is the mosque that I have been visiting during my Nights Out or on my book-out days. A beautiful escape from the many misleading influences in camp; though in itself are actually beautiful lessons/tests from Him, I would love a fair share of solitude and warm nature of strangers in the house of Allah swt. And it would be a crime not highlighting the beautiful architecture of this mosque itself, with pristine white walls, unique calligraphy and beautiful lush carpets.

I read, I reflect and I wonder As He made you known to me Your exemplary actions made this heart unknowingly grow fonder So this is how a true Muslim should be Looking at the conditions you live in And the love that you portray Compared to the influence that we breath in Drifting our very own selves astray Through you He planted seeds of guidance in me Putting me into this path of light and knowledge How beautiful is that faith you see I guess it was through you I was pulled off the edge Handsome was this man who lowered his gaze Humble was this man who sujood and prays Wise was this man who limited his words And calm was that same man who supplicates His heart differed from everybody By God-fearing & absolute piety What I seek and found is definitely true beauty In him was wisdom In him was modesty In you O Muhammad saw, is indeed a beautiful rarity From the deeds that you sincerely make To those tears that fell for His sake In those words that you shared and the prayers you made You proved what is love for us, only for His sake He cried in his prayers He cried FOR US in his prayers He cried for the orphans today feeling alone He cried for our families now war-torn
52
He cried for those widows feeling grief He cried for our sick-ones seeking relief And so I told myself So shouldn't I cry for the poor I did not feed? Or for the salah I did not meet Shouldn't I cry for the ill words that I spoke And for the hearts that I once broke I know I'll cry for the time that will not return And I'll cry for His words I did not learn Maybe one day Maybe one day I'll cry too for the preparation I did not make Cry for the punishment that I may face What deeds to the last breath will I actually take? What am I really but just a couple of days As I knew him and his sacrifices, I started to yearn To yearn to be someone I have not met And to miss so much whom I've longed to see So let me live this quiet dream, holding tight to a quiet promise I ask O Allah, strengthen my Iman and cure this disease (heart) So isn't it time to continue on what he left us yesterday? O Allah swt, I seek Your permission with everything I may Talk is cheap unless they are words from the heart And so I tell myself what I hope in all of you, let now be our very start.
“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and (who) remembers Allah often. Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21

Ask Ustaz is a Mobile App that allows Muslim and Non-Muslim to submit their questions pertaining to Islam. In this segment, we feature some of the common, as well as interesting questions received from the app. Download the app today and start submitting your questions. A special addition to this issue, we share with you a short Q&A session that we had with one of the founders of the application, brother Shah.
Thank you brother Shah for taking the time to answer these interview questions. To start off, maybe you would like to introduce and share a little bit about yourselves? Brother Aidrus and I were both of secular background. Brother Aidrus, is an IT Diploma graduate and is currently serving his career as a Service Engineer in an IT company. Myself, a Diploma graduate in Marketing Management, and has been spending most of my time in IT companies with Marketing roles. Both of us are the two pioneering team for this humble ‘Ask Ustaz’ Mobile App project.
So how did the idea of Ask Ustaz application come about? We were introduced by a mutual friend, who knew that we both had similar ideas spinning, wanting to serve the Ummah and the Asatizah. Myself, I had this idea some time ago, where I see myself needing such platform, to help bridge between our Asatizah and the Ummah. Right from the basic daily Ibadah questions, I’m very certain, that there are many out there in a similar situation, who need such platform to be at their convenience. Brother Aidrus and myself had our first meet-up where we shared our ideas and intentions. Alhamdulillah, we successfully kicked-off this project after a couple of meetings. Alhamdulillah we had the full support from our Asatizah who are more than happy to join us in this mission. We are actually kind of surprise that we made it happen within a short time frame - Truly, Allah has showed and made all of it so much easier for us.
How has the response been so far? Alhamdulillah, to date we have over 4,500 Ask Ustaz Mobile App subscribers and counting since our launch in late October 2013. We
pre-launched this project via Facebook in late September 2013, where users post questions about their Islamic queries and doubts. That itself drew about hundreds of Facebook members, and about 30 questions submitted. To date, we have about 800 or so question submissions via mobile app, so we could say that the response has been fairly good, and most importantly it does show, that this is a need to bring our Ummah together.
How long would it take for a question to be answered and will the person asking be notified? We are now moving towards a new framework that is currently on the finalizing stage, so it may not be relevant to mention how long it takes for an answer. But what we can safely say for now is that, we are moving forward by prioritizing questions that are critical – questions that involve our daily Ibadah. InsyaAllah, to be more efficient and to increase our productivity, we will compile similar questions to be answered as one, to benefit our Ummah at large. Most of the questions are similar but of different scenario, and this is something which we are trying to present in an All-In-One kind of answer that covers a few of these different scenarios. InsyaAllah, we are working on this new framework with our Asatizah closely, upon our consultation with a Scholar who gave us his insightful advice based on his years of experience running a similar program. Please pray for our success, and may this initiative bring the Ummah together – towards Allah S.W.T. and his messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).
What are the common questions asked? The commonly asked questions are concerning our daily Ibadah. Specifically Solah and Thaharah of different scenarios. These are the type of questions that is still lingering in our Ummah today, and we believe these questions are very much critical, that we have to attend 54
to, in priority. We too had received questions that are too complex to be answered online, which are best to be answered in person.
What are the feedbacks received from users? Alhamdulillah most of the feedbacks we received are positive and encouraging for us to continue this mission. We also knew, we had trouble replying to each and everyone whom submitted their questions, as all of our team including our Asatizah are doing this on a voluntary basis. Hence, we hope this upcoming new framework will help to respond to them in a compiled and wholesome answer. Again, please pray for our success in materializing these plans.
Besides an application to ask questions with regards to Islam, does Ask Ustaz offer other services? We had studied the questions we received, InsyaAllah we will roll-out internal and external programs, courses, classes and events based on each individual needs, in time to come. This is rather nothing new conceptually, but it just moves towards a dedicated and focus on what each Individual would probably need. With technology and media being so prevalent these days, what do you think it would take to disconnect people and get them back to learning from a proper teacher? This is actually our ultimate mission. This is what has been troubling the Ummah, and this is what we are going to do. We are here to be the ice-breaker for the Ummah of all different segments, and for all of us to come and gather, and learn from a teacher in person.
Some of the youths out there may be interested to be part of this cause. How are they able to join the team as volunteers? Alhamdulillah, as we speak we have quite a number of volunteers whom had approached us, wanting to be part of this cause. They can always contact us via email at ask@ask-ustaz.com and inform us on their wishful thoughts.
A friendly advice to our readers? We humbly urge all our Brothers and Sisters, despite our differences, to come together as one, for the love of Allah SWT, for our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and let us continuously repent and spend more time seeking knowledge from our Gurus, Teachers, Scholars in person, in halaqah, with our utmost sincerity in seeking knowledge. For without one, it is akin to having Syaitan as our teacher. Despite the convenience of attaining information online, nothing beats learning from reliable guru(s) in person. We have also received unconditional support from Individuals and Corporates whom had contribute for the sustenance of this project. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their sponsorship. Last but not least, let’s cultivate in our daily lives the practising of our best Adab and Akhlaq, taken from the sunnah of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him). Once again thank you brother Shah and brother Aidrus. May Allah swt bless you and the Ask Ustaz team with barakah, for this noble effort. Jazakumullah khair.
There’s a lot that needs to be done, but we hope we are able to work with more Islamic organizations, groups and movements to be able to collaborate in this effort. 55

What should one do if he/she is addicted to porn and desperately wants to stop this addiction? All praise to Allah and Selawat to our Beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. May Allah bless all of us, our family and teachers with good health and happiness. Masturbation is haram for both men and women. Imam Shafi’i stated that masturbation is forbidden based on the following verses from the Qur’aan (interpretation of the meaning): "And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts). Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, - for them, they are free from blame. But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors." [Al-Quran, Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:5-7] Here the verses are clear in forbidding all illegal sexual acts (including masturbation) except for the wives or that their right hand possess. And whoever seeks beyond that is the transgressor. "And let those who find not the financial means for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah enriches them of His bounty." [Al-Quran, Surah An-Nur 24:33] This verse also clearly orders whoever does not have the financial means to marry to keep himself chaste and be patient in facing temptations (including masturbation) until Allah enriches them of His bounty. Secondly, from the sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him): Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood said, "We were with the Prophet while we were young and had no wealth whatsoever. So Allaah’s Messenger said, "O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power." Bukhari:5066. The hadeeth orders men who are not able to marry to fast despite the hardship encountered in doing so, and not to masturbate despite the ease with which it can be done. If someone is in a situation where he/she will commit zina if he/she does not masturbate to release the temptation, only then the principle of carrying ‘the lesser evil’ is put to place which is masturbation and 56
it is compulsory for him/her to repent to Allah and strive to fight the sexual desires by carrying the orders of Allah and always engaging in his remembrance. This is to save oneself from the act of zina. While both acts are haram but the sin of zina is much severe than masturbation itself. As for curing the habit of masturbation, below are recommendations as mentioned by our scholars: 1. The motive to seek a cure for this problem should be solely following Allaah’s orders and fearing His punishment. 2. A permanent and quick cure from this problem lies in marriage as soon as the person is able, as shown in the Prophet’s hadeeth (peace be upon him). 3. Keeping oneself busy with what is good for this world and the hereafter is essential in breaking this habit before it becomes second nature after which it is very difficult to rid oneself of it. 4. Lowering the gaze (from looking at forbidden things such as pictures, movies etc.) will help suppress the desire before it leads one to commit the haraam (forbidden). Allaah orders men and women to lower their gaze as shown in the following two verses and in the Prophet’s hadeeth (peace be upon him) (interpretations of the meanings): "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things) and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.). That is purer for them. Verily, Allah is all-aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things) and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) " [Al-Quran Surah An-Nur 24.30-31] Allaah’s messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Do not follow a casual (unintentional) look (at forbidden things) with another look." Al-Tirmidhi 2777. This is a general instruction by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to abstain from all that may sexually excite a person because it might lead him/her to commit the haraam (forbidden). 5. Using one’s available leisure time in worshipping Allaah and increasing religious knowledge. 6. Being cautious not to develop any of the medical symptoms that may result from masturbation such as weak eyesight, weak nervous system, and/or back pain. More importantly, feeling of guilt and anxiety
that can be complicated by missing obligatory prayers because of the need to shower (ghusl) after every incidence of masturbation. 7. Avoiding the illusion that some youth have that masturbation is permissible because it prevents them from committing illegal sexual acts such as fornication or even homosexuality. 8. Strengthening one’s willpower and avoiding spending time alone as recommended by the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he said "Do not spend the night alone" Ahmad 6919. 9. Following the Prophet’s above mentioned hadeeth (peace be upon him) and fast when possible, because fasting will temper one’s sexual desire and keep it under control. However, one should not overreact and swear by Allaah not to return to the act because if one does not honor one’s promise, one would be facing the consequences of not living up to one’s oath to Allaah. Also, note that medication to diminish one’s sexual desire is strictly prohibited because it might permanently affect one’s sexual ability. 10. Trying to follow the Prophet’s recommendation (peace be upon him) concerning the etiquette of getting ready for bed, such as reading well-known supplications, sleeping on the right side, and avoiding sleeping on the belly (the Prophet forbade sleeping on the belly). 11. Striving hard to be patient and chaste, because persistence will eventually, Allaah willing, lead to attaining those qualities as second nature, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) explains in the following hadeeth: "Whoever seeks chastity Allaah will make him chaste, and whoever seeks help from none but Allaah, He will help him, and whoever is patient He will make it easy for him, and no one has ever been given anything better than patience." Bukhari:1469. 12. Repenting, asking forgiveness from Allaah, doing good deeds, and not losing hope and feeling despair are all prerequisites to curing this problem. Note that losing hope is one of the major sins punishable by Allaah. 13. Finally, Allaah is the Most Merciful and He always responds to whoever calls on Him. So, asking for Allah’s forgiveness will be accepted, by His will.
2. When we're doing Sunnah prayers, and a person taps you on your back to do fard prayers, do you have to indicate that you're doing Sunnah prayers by raising your hand or can you continue the prayer so that the makmum gets e Fadhilah of jamaah? It is highly recommended that you indicate to him by raising your hand to tell him that you are doing sunnah prayer if you have not done the fard prayers. This is done for the purpose of getting him to pray together with you after you have completed the sunnah prayer which you are in. In the case if you have already did your fard prayer, you can also indicate to inform him that you are praying sunnah so that he will find other congregants who has not prayed the fard. He will then get the full benefit of praying fard in congregation with others. Nevertheless, there is no harm for a person who is praying the fard prayer to follow another who is doing the sunnah prayer. Both prayers are valid. Wallahu a'lam. Answered by: Ustaz Anwar Hussain
3. Must we have a purification shower if stains are visible after menses is over? If the stains are from the menstruation (that is within 15 days from the start of the menstruation cycle) and it appears after the shower was performed, then it is compulsory to shower again. This is because the menstruation is still present when the first shower was performed. Thus, the first shower is considered void. However, if the blood stain was other than the menstruation blood stain, it is considered to be a normal filth and has to be cleaned away before the performance of prayers. A woman will able to differentiate the menstruation blood stain from the others through her menstrual cycle experiences. Wallahu a'lam. Answered by: Ustaz Anwar Hussain
