Led by internationally renowned coach Hossam Hassan, the MAC introduced the sport of fencing a few years ago. In a short period of time the program has grown and some of Coach Hassan’s pupils have made their mark in national competitions. In November, for the first time, the MAC will host a national fencing competition.

President’s Column
President’s Column Fellow membershere is no better time of year to be a sports fan in St. Louis, especially a sports fan who is also fortunate enough to belong to the Missouri Athletic Club. As I write this column, our Cardinals remain in the hunt for the Central Division title. I hope we will see an exciting pennant race and some thrilling games in October. Beginning in 1982, when my dad took me out of school to watch the Cardinals play the Braves in the National League Championship Series until the great teams of recent years, Cardinals playoff games have made so many great memories for this fan. I recall in 2006 learning that a friend was overseas and unable to use his ticket to Game 3 of the 2006 World Series (which might have really been Game 4). I called my brother-in-law in Chicago at 9 a.m. and told him I would meet him at 6 p.m. in the Jack Buck Grill, and I had a ticket for him. Nine hours and three hundred miles later, he was there to watch, at age thirty-six, his first World Series Game and a Cardinals win. Despite their history and prestige, the Cardinals are only part of the story for a St. Louis sportsman. The Rams recently impressed in the pre-season and will be beginning the regular season behind quarterback and MAC Sports Personality of the Year Sam Bradford in a matter of days. The Mizzou Tigers will be opening their season down the highway in Columbia and, before you know it, the St. Louis Blues will drop the puck on another season in the history of that storied franchise. Soon after that, MAC member Rick Majerus will hit the hardwood with the 2011-2012 St. Louis University Billikens basketball team. We
T
are sure to keep close tabs on that squad as Governor Troy Robertson, a St. Louis University basketball letterman, has recently joined the Board of the Club. In addition to the “big name” teams, the powerhouse St. Louis University soccer team will also soon be underway, in addition to scores of fine prep teams competing in football, soccer, basketball and any other sport to whet your interest. The MAC counts among its members many avid hunters, and the fall means time for their sporting activities as well. Governors Justin Fowler and Chris Michalak will keep the Board informed of their luck with sporting birds this fall. I understand Governor John Kingston arrived at the West Clubhouse with his bow and arrow, but the staff had to explain that Town & Country Deer season was still a few months off! I look forward to see what interesting events the Rod & Gun Club will have for our members looking to get in tune during hunting season. As always, the MAC remains in perfect step with the interests and preferences of its members. The Downtown Clubhouse is the perfect base for a sports fan’s evening. Enjoy dinner and drinks in the Jack Buck Grill and ride the MAC shuttle to Busch Stadium, the Scottrade Center or the Chaifetz Arena to watch the Cardinals, Blues and Billikens. When it comes to catching the Rams, the proposition is even easier and the offerings more elaborate. For each home game, there will be brunches or buffet dining (depending on the game time) and the best parking and tailgate spot in town in the Club’s garage. We all know that MAC members are never one to limit their activities to the grandstands and sidelines and, again,
the Club is ready for you to be the star of your own athletic endeavor. Tennis, basketball, squash and racquetball leagues are forming as the high points of those seasons is approaching quickly. In addition to the “classic leagues,” check out the fall activity guide. The variety of offerings is tremendous. For example, did you know the MAC employs a world-renowned fencing expert? Also, remember the outdoor pool remains open into September for lap swimming. If you missed it last fall, check out the platform tennis court that has been refurbished on the roof of the Downtown Clubhouse. Traditionally a cold weather sport, our club offers one of the few paddle courts in town. I encourage you to get a group and give it a try. Finally, remember a few great sports events being planned, including the MAC Golf Classic on Monday, Sept. 19, and the Rookies of the Year event presented by the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, Sept. 22. Whether you are a fan, an athlete or both, there is simply no better place to experience all the wonderful sporting opportunities our community has to offer than the Missouri Athletic Club. Thank you for making this Club the special place it is, and I look forward to seeing you this fall. Yours in fellowship and service,

Fencing Makes its Mark at the MAC

nternationally renowned fencing coach Hossam Hassan introduced the sport to the MAC a few years ago. Coach Hassan is the former Egyptian National Fencing coach who has a proven track record of turning novices into champions. One of his prized pupils at the MAC is Ron Daugherty. Hossam Hassan. “Ron can represent the U.S. at the World Championships in the future,” said Coach Hassan. Fencing Facts Fencing: In contemporary common usage, fencing refers specifically to European schools of swordsmanship and to the modern Olympic sport that has evolved out of them. • Fencing is one of the four sports which has been featured at every modern Olympic Games. Currently, three types of weapon are used in Olympic fencing: – Foil — a light thrusting weapon; the valid target is restricted to the torso, the chest, shoulders, and back; double touches are not allowed This weapon follows the rule of “right of way.” – Epée — a heavy thrusting weapon; the valid target area covers the entire body; double touches are allowed. There is no “right of way.” – Sabre — a light cutting and thrusting weapon; the valid target area is the saddle line, which is from one side of your hip to the other and up, this also includes the head. The target area does not include the hands. This weapon follows the rule of “right of way.” The Benefits of fencing: • Fitness: As with all aerobic exercise fencing burns calories, helping participants to lose weight and maintain
their ideal weight. Fencing also helps tone and define the body. These physical improvements inevitably lead to a boost in self-esteem, a fundamental attribute of mental and emotional health. With its complex physical maneuvers, fencing also helps develop muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination. The positions and movements in fencing must be precise to be powerful. And in order to perfect that precision, the body must become flexible and strong. In fencing, as in a martial art, power and precision go hand in hand. • Mental Strengths: The competitive aspect of fencing augments this sharpening of the minds as participants venture to out-think and outmaneuver one another in split-second decisions. As the body is moving, responding and reacting, the mind must always be thinking, and yet at the same time be meditatively still. In this way, fencing is also quite often compared with chess, in that the competitors must always be calm, clear-headed, and planning several moves in advance. • Social Skills: Fencing entails regular interaction with other like-minded people. Supportive and encouraging social interaction is an essential component of total health and wellness. • Stress Relief: You may not think fighting someone off as they come at your with a sword would be a stress reliever, but fencing forces you to clear your mind and focus on your opponent and moves.
Did you Know?
The tip of the fencing weapon is the second fastest moving object in sport; the first is the marksman’s bullet.
National Fencing Tournament Coming to MAC West The Fencers Academy Super Youth Circuit Nov. 5 & 6 For the first time, the MAC will host a national fencing tournament, the Fencers Academy Super Youth Circuit. The Super Youth Circuit (SYC), sanctioned by USA Fencing, is a group of events held throughout the country for youth fencers in various age groups in all weapons that provide an opportunity for young athletes to experience elite competition, earn national points and prepare for future national events. It is also a qualifier for other national youth events. Missouri Athletic Club members are welcome to watch the matches both days for free. Watch some of the top boys and girls from around the country compete in this fastpaced, exciting sport.

ome of the hottest hoops action takes place during the summer. The Downtown and West Clubhouses each hosted a summer league that concluded in August. The winner of the Downtown Summer Basketball League was the team captained by Gary Sextro. They beat the team captained by Carl Winters 59-44 in the championship game. Sextro’s team entered the playoffs as the 4th seed out of 4 teams with a record of 1-7. They went on to defeat the then undefeated #1 seed who was 8-0 to get into the championship game, before defeating Team Winters for the league title. They ended up with an overall
record of 3-7. At MAC West, the Ravens finished with an 8-1 record and captured the league championship. Tim Prewitt was at the helm and Tim Frye led all scorers averaging 25 points per game. By Kim Steinmetz, MAC Tennis Pro he indoor tennis season is about to begin and many of you have had very little tennis play during the summer months. When you come back to your regular game a little rusty, do not fret! Your game has not gone anywhere. Your strokes are still with you. And, no, you have not forgotten how to play tennis. The only thing that may be a little off, is your timing. The more you are able to relax, the better your game will be. Have you ever wondered why, after a long break from tennis, you often come back that first day and play really well? This is probably because you are not expecting a great deal from yourself and are therefore very relaxed. Then the second time back you try to duplicate how you played that previous time and you can’t do it. By wanting and trying to play well you create tension and think too much, thus not allowing your strokes to

Racquetball Tip of the Month: Fundamentals: I would like to dedicate this month’s tip to all you Cardinals fans. It is a long season for the Cardinals and now more than ever they need to stick to the fundamentals. We all get lazy and tired at times and just go through the motions. Let’s get on the courts and in every rally make sure we use proper foot work (fundamentals). I will show you how to get around the court the fastest and easiest way and challenge you to try and achieve it the whole time your on the court. It can be done, I promise.

1) In your ready position, bend a little at the knees and waist as you lean forward. This allows you to comfortably remain on the balls of your feet. 2) On each shot, keep your eyes on the ball until it hits your strings. 3) Exhale as you strike the ball to allow your muscles to relax. If you stay with the basics, getting back to tennis may turn out to be more enjoyable than it is already guaranteed to be. Good luck and may you have a great beginning to the 2011 indoor season!

Summer Sports Action
T
he West Clubhouse was bustling with youth activities this summer. Kids participated in weekly specialty sports camps and Camp MAC, which kicked off the first week of June. Camp MAC participants were taught a variety of sports including tennis, racquetball, squash, fencing and martial arts. Instructors and club pros worked with the campers to teach them skills and rules and to improve their techniques. Campers not only had fun, but made many new friends while at camp. Campers were split into small groups so Graham Stisser. that the staff could work more closely with each camper to reinforce their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Coach Eric Saxton and the dedicated and enthusiastic counselors led the fun for the campers each week. Kids also participated in specialty sports camps. A highly skilled and encouraging group of instructors led these camps. More advanced athletes could work on perfecting their skills and beginners learned the basics of the game. Camps were offered in racquetball, squash, lacrosse, golf, tennis, soccer, baseball, football, volleyball and cheerleading. The sports action will not stop at West now that school is back. After school programs are now in full swing. Check the Member Program Guide Book or the web (mac-stl.org), for dates and times. The programs are a great way to keep your children fit and active.

his is one of the best pinot noirs that I have found in the St. Louis market at this price point. The Dierberg family grows the grapes and makes this wine from the Santa Maria Valley in California. The wine shows dark berries and a rich creamy mouthfeel. Great for a fall evening by itself, yet yields enough acid to enjoy with food. Cheers to all of you and thank you for the last seven and a half years. I am leaving the MAC family to follow a lifelong dream of opening my own restaurant. I’ve enjoyed cooking for you and talking wine. Let me know if you stop in.

For the more experienced player, especially juniors looking to excel in tennis in the future, Kim says the most important thing to her as an aspiring player was to set a long-term goal. Her goal was to earn a college scholarship. Once she reached that goal, she learned that she had to continue to set goals for the future otherwise there was a drop in her play. She also would advise players to watch lots of different players play tennis and strive to improve. “Be wise and know that you will never know it all,” Kim said. Kim recently received the exciting news that she will be inducted into the Missouri Valley Tennis Association Hall of Fame in December. Duplicate Bridge
D
uplicate bridge involves specialized equipment that keeps individual hands intact, and specialized scoring methods that compare results. After a table of four bridge players analyze, bid, play and score a hand, it is passed to another table where four different players analyze, bid, play and score the hand. This process is repeated as many times as there are tables. At the end of the evening, results are compared and the pair who performed the best on the most individual deals wins the contest. Duplicate bridge is played the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at MAC West. The game begins at 6:15 p.m. and is over by 9:45 p.m. Many players and their guests meet for dinner in the Stan Musial Grill before the game. For more information, contact cochairs Patricia Corich or Peter Fuerst.

THE MAC EXPERIENCE Letters from MAC Members & Guests Dear Linda (MAC Catering), I am writing to “personally” thank you and your exceptional staff for everything you did to accommodate all of us at my daughter’s wedding held in the Missouri Ballroom this past Saturday night. What a tremendous and fun-filled reception you provided! As I told you, upon reserving the MAC, my company has been in business for 43 years and we have photographed weddings all over the Midwest. When my daughters were about five years of age, I told my wife that when they get married someday, I would like their reception to be at the MAC in the Missouri Ballroom. It surely was worth the 22 year wait! Beginning the day we reserved the date, you handled our event like it was the only event you had scheduled this year! Your forever attention to detail always impressed my daughter who as an attorney that appreciates organization. The suggestions you offered, while helping us to plan her wedding, really made a difference in making her reception unique and special. Upon arriving at her reception that evening, you invited my wife and I to preview the ballroom prior to guests entering. The ballroom looked amazing! It was like a
fairytale! Dan was always ready to attend to anything we needed. And every time I saw Clarence, he greeted me with a smile on his face and was always anxious to assist. Two servers told me how they enjoyed serving at “this fun reception.” After photographing over 2,000 weddings and receptions, there are not too many people who have experienced as many receptions as I have. Now, without any doubt, more than ever, I am overly confident the MAC is the premiere venue for receptions. My most sincere thanks to you, Linda, and your staff for making my daughter’s reception EVERYTHING she dreamed of… and more! When my second daughter gets married, we will do it again! I look forward to it! With much gratitude, Elmer Kowal
