LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT anuary was an exciting month for me! I started the MAC’s Commit to Fit Program, the Board of Governors had a great Saturday half-day work session focused on our branding initiative and succession planning, the MAC hosted a successful Hermann Trophy Awards, we had a magical wine dinner and most importantly, the Board of Governors elected the 2022/23 officers. What an amazing month at the MAC! The election of our officers is a very special night for the Board of Governors and an important part of our governance process at the MAC. In the past, this election was held every March. However, the election was moved to January to allow for continuity with the “transfer of power”. I personally don’t view the change in officers as a “transfer of power”. I view it more of a passing of the torch…. Olympic Style! (I’m a sports girl, so of course I tend to use sports terms.) The current Board of Governors and all previous Boards have done a fantastic job of delivering continuity from year to year, with a focus on doing what is best for our Members. Each Board has built upon the plans and foundation past Board have laid! I want to personally thank the current Board of Governors for their outstanding commitment to the MAC and congratulate the new officers as they continue their Board service with focus on evolving our Club to meet the needs of our Members. The Board of Governors are true leaders and I’m so proud to work alongside all of them. The 2021/2022 MAC officers are proud to pass the torch to another outstanding group of leaders. Congratulations to these 2022/2023 MAC Board of Governors officers who will take office in May F President – Brent Beumer F First Vice-President - Tracy Beckette F Second Vice-President – Justin Fowler F Treasurer – Steve Albart F Secretary – Chris Swank As I’ve mentioned previously, the Board of Governors have been hard at work on our Branding Initiative. With insights learned from the Board retreat at the Detroit Athletic Club, work with our consultant BigWideSky, and the hard work of our task force, the Board of Governors have evolved our mission and vision statements. Through focus groups used in this process, Members highlighted an opportunity for us to more clearly articulate a compelling vision and mission that could provide a foundation for our growth strategy as well as provide us with a well-designed brand position. Our intent is to use our vision and mission to make intentional decisions. We plan to share the statements with you very soon. Thank you, Governor McClanahan and the branding task force, for leading such an exciting and important initiative. I’d also like to thank every Member who participated in our Member survey. The Board of Governors and the Planning Committee are evaluating the results and developing an action plan to address our Members’

changing wants and needs. We will be providing a recap of the results in a future Cherry Diamond. Until then, please know the Board of Governors appreciates the feedback and is hard at work evaluating next steps. February at the MAC will be just as exciting as January, I know! Make sure to mark your calendars for these great February events. F Speaker Series: Karl Rove – Feb. 11 F Valentine’s Ball – Feb. 12 F Father-Son Banquet - Feb. 16 F Boxing Night – Feb. 24 MEMBER HIGHLIGHT: This month, I would like to thank the entire Membership Committee and Membership Staff for their commitment to the MAC. In January of 2021, our Member count was at its lowest with just 2,130 Members. However, thanks to our Member sponsors, the Membership Committee and Membership staff, we are pleased to announce that as of now we have 2,482 Members, the highest it’s been since 2010! Thank you for your tireless efforts to engage new and current Members. We are lucky to have such a dedicated group focused on our membership. It’s because of your work that we have positive results to share! Please join me in thanking the following committee Members for their selfless service. The MAC is a better place because of each one of you! Membership Committee Chairman - Duke Niedringhaus, Justin Fowler, Carter Alexander, Brad McLaury, Carrie Burggraf, Karlos Ramirez, Eric Banks, Micah Mills, Mike York, Jenna Oesch, Tom Streib, Harry Pettey, Tim Maynard and Margaret Pate White. I always look forward to writing my Cherry Diamond articles. I enjoy sharing insights into the hard work of those involved in Club leadership with Members. If you are interested in joining a committee or running for the Board of Governors, please reach out to any of the following members of the Nominating Sub-Committee: Chairman PP Kevin Cantwell, Vice-Chairman PP Dan Lett, PP Gary Wideman, PP Mike Hackett, PG Judith Hanses, PG Mark Brandom, PP Brent Kaniecki, PG Chris Michalak, PG Greg Beekman, Bill Swoboda, Jenna Oesch and Leonard Adewunmi. I am incredibly grateful for my time on the Board and hope others see the value of Club leadership. I hope you have a wonderful February at the MAC. If you see me around the Club, make sure you stop me and introduce yourself. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this premier Club.

Angie Minges, President Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER he Missouri Athletic Club is a great organization because of its Members, and you, its Members, are great for many reasons, but especially for your exemplary generosity. Even during the pandemic, you have continued to display this amazing kindness. There is no better example of this than the money we raised for our three 2021 Charitable Society for Children charities: Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Sweet Babies and Caring for Kids. At the CSC Check Presentation, which took place on Jan. 22, we were proud to announce that we donated more than $12,500 to support each of these deserving charities (more than $37,500 total). I would like to personally thank CSC co-chairs Nat Walsh and Jarid King for their dedication to raising money, awareness and more for these worthy causes. This generosity extends beyond the work of the CSC though. In the month of December, MAC past and present governors Carter Alexander, Justin Fowler and Jeff Moore donated their time to the Youth and Family Center — helping to share the spirit of our season with our downtown neighbors by passing out gifts generously donated by the Board of Governors and the Club. Another exciting MAC partnership in the works is Urban Golf of Greater St. Louis. Our Member Alex Brockman introduced the Club to their cause last May as a possible connection for the Club’s Sports Foundation. This organization, led by Jerome Harris, prepares youth in urban St. Louis to be successful beyond high school and exposes them to the vast golf community. Under the umbrella of PGA Reach, this program strives to help high school students in downtown St. Louis public schools connect with other individuals around the game of golf and see possibilities outside their borders after high school. Jerome will be a special guest speaker at this year’s Golf Club Kickoff, which will take place this spring. Currently, Urban Golf is looking to build more champions for these students. In an ongoing effort to give options to Members who love golf and want to give back, we invite you to donate golf equipment, time or even sponsor a uniform for these young players. We are so excited about the opportunity to partner with this impactful program and will be sharing more details soon. Through these projects and many more, our Members continue to prove their exceptional character in the Club and throughout the local community! Throughout the last few months, the Club has been working to devise a strategy for growth and Member

T

enhancement as we entered 2022. Possibly the most important part of this process was refocusing the mission of the MAC, which is to be an entity that creates extraordinary experiences in all aspects of Club life in the spirit of excellence, service and tradition. Looking forward, the Club is certainly taking steps toward creating these experiences. One such step is through the Jack Buck Grille renovation, which will provide for an enhanced dining experience in the Downtown Clubhouse. Historically, the Grille has been the spot for Members to connect especially before and after Cards and Blues games. With that in mind, we are happy to announce that we are on track to reopen by the Cardinals’ Opening Day this spring. We are sure that the enhancements to the Grille will help enhance your gameday experience. For more information on plans for the Grille, see page 29. Another step is continuing to recruit new Members who share these values, much like the ones I talked about earlier in this article. I know that each month, President Minges has been highlighting exceptional Members who are doing amazing things for the Club and community, and I have highlighted various staff who have done the same. This month, however, it would be unfair of me to highlight just one staff Member as the entire Membership team deserves a shoutout. In the month of January, Membership Director Rodney Stoyer, Membership Development Executives Sami Lipkowitz and Kara Kelpe and Membership Administrative Assistant Becky Gan processed 93 new Club Members! Throughout the last two years, they developed and executed a five-step plan to gain new Members and bring back ones who had taken a leave of absence or resigned. This plan surpassed expectations as, at the time of writing this, we are just 25 new Members away from reaching our cap of 2,500 Members! Well done team! As we head toward this Membership cap, we hope you will continue to introduce Exceptional New Members who share our values of tradition, community outreach and excellence! F See you at the Club!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Jim Lally Jim Lally, President and CEO at Enterprise Financial Services Corp (the parent company of Enterprise Bank & Trust), is a longstanding Member of the Missouri Athletic Club. He is a St. Louis native who takes great pride in attending high school and college in his hometown. For this family man, the Missouri Athletic Club has played a huge role in the lives of his four children and wife, Laura. Lally expressed, “This is home,” regarding MAC. Many years ago, Lally caught wind of the Club while he was working in downtown St. Louis. He had a friend who worked at the Club and declared that MAC was the spot to be. Lally recalled seeking more information and ultimately decided to join MAC in 2003 – the Club’s 100th anniversary. He remembered how special it was for new Members during such an influential time at the Club. MAC provides Members with a tremendous number of professional opportunities, and Lally knew he had to be part of the organization. Lally has guided people to a lifetime of financial success through Enterprise Bank & Trust since he joined MAC. Lally said Enterprise Bank & Trust takes pride in how they continue to help families with their major financial decisions. “We are focused on privately held businesses, their owners and their owners’ families. The secret to our success is recruiting others to our team who share the same passion” said Lally. Like MAC, Enterprise Bank & Trust regularly gives back to the St. Louis community through community development, diversity and inclusion programs, education through Enterprise University and much more. Lally encourages professionals and business owners to join Enterprise University (enterprisebank.com/eu) to take advantage of the no-cost business training courses, which are taught by experts in their fields. “We’ve invested in this program since 2004, and I’m proud that we have welcomed more than 30,000 people to our courses,” said Lally. Outside of Enterprise Bank & Trust and MAC, Lally is involved in the St. Louis community, finding it important to be involved in the community in which he is living. He is a current member of the St. Louis Aquarium Foundation Board, the Gateway Arch Park

Foundation Board of Trustees, the Wallis Companies Board, and the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. He proudly represents the MAC throughout all his community involvement. The Club continues to house top-tier business people in the St. Louis community. While Lally can find a few co-workers at MAC, Enterprise Bank & Trust also supports the Club through various events. Lally guarantees every time he is in either Clubhouse, he may have an accidental run-in with another Member that, without question, results in a follow-up conversation. He sees his business and social life bump into each other at the Club that, in return, creates a genuine connection. “[The] Club allows you to be who you are at all times,” said Lally. MAC is never short of hosting a long list of truly incredible and memorable events. Lally said he always looks forward to the Jack Buck Awards, the main event that helps him kick off his holiday season. He remembers all the amazing St. Louis sports stars that have graced the event throughout the years. New to the event list this year, Enterprise Bank & Trust is sponsoring the MAC Speaker Series. Lally is thrilled to bring a mix of speakers to create an interesting dialogue. The series will bring a unique element to MAC with a wide range of speakers and interest groups. Lally is looking forward to the first speaker of the new year, Karl Rove. Lally initially viewed MAC as a club for older businessmen, but now he speaks first-hand about the Club’s family-oriented atmosphere. Lally and his family are regulars at both clubhouses, utilizing the workout facilities and the wonderful dining and social options. Even after 20 years, Lally said he and his family “Use the Club with great pride.” As a long-time Member, Lally and his wife Laura are excited to see families of all ages at MAC. Without question, Lally said the number one highlight of his membership at MAC is spending time with his kids. The MAC provided a place for the Lally family to connect on something they love—basketball. When his children were younger, you could always find him on the basketball court practicing drills with his kids on a regular basis. “These moments were about much more than improving their skills. It gave me time to listen to what was going on in their lives and really connect with them at a vulnerable time in their lives.” In addition to sports, the Lally family celebrates birthdays and other special occasions at the Club. The Club truly holds a special place in the hearts of the Lally family. “The Club always allows you to be who you are and gives you a chance to do many different activities,” said Lally. He adds that he can always trust that the service is always top-notch at MAC, and he is confident that MAC will maintain the camaraderie he has enjoyed for many years to come. F

GOOD FELLOWSHIP DAY Two of the most historic pillars of the MAC are camaraderie and athletics. On Saturday, Feb. 19, the MAC will once again host one of its most treasured traditions, which brings together those two pillars. What started as the Hall of Health’s Year-End Jamboree in 1933 has blossomed into a full-fledged event featuring fitness classes, competitions, wellness offerings and a complimentary lunch buffet in the Sportsman’s Club. “Good Fellowship Day is one of the longest standing traditions here at the Club,” said Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro.” “It originally started to thank all of the fifth-floor locker holders for their support and a way to get together and promote camaraderie.” Despite its changes over time, Good Fellowship has always been a day to bring together Members young and old to celebrate the spirit and camaraderie of the Club and thank all of the users of the Club’s fitness and athletic facilities and their families with a fun day of sport. It is also a great way, especially for new Members, to check out all of the athletic, fitness and wellness opportunities at the Downtown Clubhouse, while getting to know other fellow Members through classes and healthy competition. These events are fun for both skilled athletes and novices alike who just want to try something new in a judgment-free environment. After working up an appetite, Members will gather on the fourth floor for food and drinks. “Good Fellowship Day is one of the longest-running events/traditions at the MAC,” said Downtown Assistant Athletic Director Rick Schneider. This event is a great day to simply come down to the Club, get in a workout or participate in a class, then have lunch while chatting it up with fellow Members. “Members used to bring in wild game that they had killed, and our chefs used to take it and cook it up for the event. When I started they used to serve the food and drink up here on the basketball court, bring up chairs, food, kegs, etc., but then we got smart and realized how much easier it is to do it in the restaurant on the fourth floor where everything already is,” said Schneider. Keep an eye on emails and MAC social media for the official 2022 Good Fellowship Day schedule. Members must sign up for all fitness classes in advance online via the Downtown Fitness calendar. F

TENNIS TIP By Kim Steinmetz With cold weather upon us, we are reminded of the importance of warming up our bodies before playing tennis; doing two things will really help. First, make it a habit to set aside 15-20 minutes for stretching. If you do an activity like yoga, that’s great, but an at-home routine is good too; simply stretch your muscles to the point of what one would call “good pain” and hold for 20 seconds. You determine which muscles need it the most and how strong to stretch. You’ll feel better the rest of your day for it! Once you get to the MAC for tennis, take five to 10 minutes to warm up aerobically; walking, jogging, spinning, jump roping - all are good and important to get the body warmed up and ready for tennis. Keep in mind, a quick two-minute, at the net, on-court stretch, does not make you more flexible, nor does it warm your muscles up as well as an aerobic warm-up. F FEBRUARY 2022 F 19

T H E CSC PR E SENTS THE 2022 CHAR I T I E S The Missouri Athletic Club Charitable Society for Children’s* mission is to provide financial assistance to local St. Louis children’s charities and to give time and resources to the community. The charities are nominated by Members and employees of the MAC. The Covenant House welcomes all youth who are runaway, trafficked, at-risked, or experiencing homelessness with unconditional love, absolute respect and a place to call home. Beyond shelter and basic needs, they deliver transformative solutions to help young people ages 16 to 24 build productive, independent and sustainable lives.

The nominations are presented to the Charitable Society for Children Committee, which then chooses the three beneficiaries for the year. The CSC voted and decided on Covenant House, Girls on the Run and Kellsie’s Hope Foundation to be this year’s sponsored charities.

Girls on the Run inspires girls third through eighth grade to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experiencebased curriculum, which creatively integrates running. Underscoring the important connection between physical and emotional health, this program addresses the whole girl at a critical age when society begins to tell them what they can and cannot do.

Kellsie’s Hope Foundation provides HOPE to families that have children suffering from cancer by offering immediate support through trips and gifts (wishes) that might otherwise be unattainable. They are also dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support childhood cancer research and support the education of healthcare providers with an annual nursing scholarship.

CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB

The Forever Young Club Takes Missouri’s Capital City by Storm

This past Christmas season, the Forever Young Club visited Jefferson City, Mo. While the Forever Young Club members toured the newly renovated Capitol building, the sounds of joyous carols being sung by youth choirs reverberated along the marble walls. Completed in 1871, the Governor’s Mansion was FYC members’ next stop for an elegant luncheon, impeccably served by incarcerated prisoners training for jobs to prepare for their release. Wearing turn of the twentieth-century fashion, the Governor’s Mansion guide explained that the Christmas trees in each room reflected a separate era in the mansion’s history. The sweeping circular grand staircase encased in poinsettias encircling the splendid Missouri First Ladies’ tree made for an impressive memory. The change in atmosphere was dramatic with the next stop at the Missouri State Highway Patrol Museum. Vintage Highway Patrol cars dating to the origin of the Patrol in 1931 impressed the FYC with the time the Highway Patrol has served Missourians.

30 F CHERRY DIAMOND

As a bit of trivia, FYC learned that in April 1933 home movies left behind by Bonnie and Clyde as they escaped a raid on a Joplin area apartment by Highway Patrol and other authorities led to the couple’s identification and demise in Louisiana in May 1934. The visit to the stately Missouri Supreme Court building left FYC with an enhanced understanding of the Judiciary Branch’s role and its importance in the administration of justice. The extensive law library available for researching cases was striking. Justice Mary Russell, a 2014 MAC Woman of Distinction, captivated FYC with the intricacies of administering judgement according to Missouri law. As with all Forever Young Club trips, ice cream must be the last stop! The group celebrated in style at the famous Central Dairy established in 1920. The current 1934 building maintains its period ice cream parlor where FYC enjoyed an overly generous serving of award-winning ice cream before returning to St. Louis. Numerous Christmas lighting displays along US Highway 50 capped off the group’s long day as FYC made their way back to St. Louis. F
