LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT appy New Year! I can’t believe another year as passed. 2021 was a fabulous year at the MAC. Membership increased from 2,130 to 2,403. It was great to see so many Members engaging with others in our facilities both at the Downtown and West Clubhouses. We hosted many successful events that ranged from our always popular Boxing Night, our inaugural Wrestling event featuring the Million Dollar Man Ted DeBiase, which made me feel old since I remember watching him on Wrestling at the Chase, and of course our 52nd Jack Buck Sports Awards. We successfully and safely executed these events while operating with the continued challenges of the pandemic. And we also increased our financial strength which is a testament to our Members who continue to invest in the Club’s long-term success and our talented staff. It was a very blessed year for the MAC….so let’s toast to 2021’s achievements and 2022’s bright future. Like many others, I start the new year by creating a mantra. For 2022, my mantra is to “Be Present”. In today’s world, being present is a challenge. We have TV, computers, cell phones, social media, etc. and now we even have this thing called the Metaverse where you buy NFT’s. Technology has dramatically improved our lives, but we can forget that being present goes beyond updating our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter feeds. In 2022, I plan to be more engaged with my family and friends, especially at the many exciting events planned at the MAC! I also plan to “Commit to Fit” by participating in the MAC’s 60-day challenge that encourages our Members to get or stay fit in 2022. Points will be given for participation in both individual workouts and weekly workouts/challenges posted by our very own fitness instructors, Courtney and Paul. For those who are competitive, prizes will be given for the most points accumulated and highest percentage of body weight lost. All Members who complete all 60 days will receive prizes too. To kickstart the program, each member in the program will receive a free personal training or nutrition session. A 10 percent discount on all additional fitness services offered thought the MAC. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience our first-class personal training, nutrition counseling, massage therapy and metabolic testing offerings. Are YOU up for the Commit to Fit challenge with me? In 2022, the MAC has many exciting events to look forward to. In January and February, we have a few of our Member’s favorite events. Make sure to mark your calendars to these great events. F Orientation to Club Governance - Jan. 6 – Thinking about getting involved in Club leadership? Attend a special open house for all Members who want to learn about service on Club committees and the Board of Governors. F Hermann Trophy Awards - Jan. 7. – Find out who will be crowned soccer’s next rising stars at the MAC Hermann Trophy banquet. F CSC Check Presentation - Jan. 22 - Enjoy live entertainment and dinner while the MAC Charitable Society for Children presents checks to the 2021 charities and announces the 2022 charities.

F Cornhole Tournament - Jan. 29 - MAC Members and guests will compete in the second annual Cornhole Tournament. Enjoy the tournament, prizes, a basketball watch party and food stations. F Speaker Series: Karl Rove – Feb. 11 - The MAC welcomes author, Fox News contributor and former White House Sr. Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove to speak on politics today. F Valentine’s Ball – Feb. 12 – Gather for a night of free-flowing food stations, cocktails, live music and dancing. No fundraising. No speeches. F Father-Son Banquet - Feb. 16 – Fathers and sons can enjoy a special night out featuring speaker Shawn Williams, former Marine and father of three, and Top Gun. F Boxing Night – Feb. 24 - Have a knockout time at the annual MAC boxing championship. We are excited to announce we have tentative dates regarding our capital project timing. Please make sure to read Wally’s column this month for more details on our projects. Thank you for your patience as we work to get these member enchantments completed. I look forward to enjoying the newly renovated spaces. We also have some changes within our Foundations. As you may recall, the MAC currently has two 501(c)(3) entities which are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions: The Sports Foundation and the Preservation Foundation. Due to an IRS audit which began in 2019 with an unsuccessful appeal, we are in the process of winding down the current Preservation Foundation and exploring its reorganization. So much good work has been accomplished through the Preservations Foundation, and with a reorganization, we expect that good work to continue. If you have questions regarding our foundations, please direct them to myself, our General Manager Wally Smith, the Preservation Foundation President Dean Eggerding or Director of Advancement Larry Absheer at 314-604-3890. MEMBER HIGHLIGHT: This month, I’d like to pay tribute to Annie and Greg Beekman who work tirelessly each year alongside Jim Wilson, the MAC’s Director of Communication to host the Hermann Trophy Awards, a hallmark event for the Club. This year will mark their 10th year serving as co-Chairs of the event. They took the reins from Steve Krause, who created a strong foundation, and have continued to grow the awards presentation in national prominence, attracting many prominent featured speakers from the world of soccer including Mia Hamm, Carli Lloyd and this year, Crystal Dunn. Greg is also the president of the Sports Foundation. Thank you, Annie and Greg, for your dedication to the MAC and this event. The MAC is a better place because of you! If you see me around the Club, make sure you stop me and introduce yourself. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this premier Club. Wishing you health, wealth and happiness in the year ahead!

Angie Minges, President Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER appy New Year! As you know, the New Year marks a time of new beginnings, and this is especially true for the Club. We’ve got some awesome changes coming this year, and we’re excited to share these with you. First of all, if you’ve been in either Clubhouse recently, you may have seen the renderings for the Jack Buck Grille renovation that will begin Jan. 3! The Grille will be getting a total facelift with a refreshed design to mirror the Downtown Clubhouse lobby and the feel of our 1903 bar West. There will also be a new HVAC smoke system above the bar, kitchen upgrades, bar upgrades, new TVs and much more! We hope to have this project completed by Opening Day this spring if all goes according to plan. Until then, we’ll move all food and beverage operations to the Sportsman’s Club on the fourth floor so don’t be a stranger and come on down as we’re open and ready for some fun. Other exciting projects coming down the pipeline include the remodel of the 1903 dining room at West, which will come on the heels of the Jack Buck Grille renovations. When complete, the dining room and 1903 bar will coordinate and complement each other as our plan is to create the coolest dining room and experience in West County for our Members. The other project at West consists of covering our 1903 patio. The engineering on this project has been a challenge, but I think we have it all figured out so expect to see this one underway early this spring. A special thank you goes out to all of our Members who contribute to our monthly All-Star Program. These monthly, tax-deductible contributions from our Members average $35 per participant and generate approximately $9,000 per month. Most of those funds generated have recently gone into our Preservation Foundation. Due to a recent IRS ruling, unfortunately, we will be winding down our Preservation Foundation as it exists and hopefully establishing a new Foundation with a clearer mission and guidelines. So much good work has been accomplished through the Preservation Foundation since it was founded in 2006, and with the reestablishment of a new foundation, we expect that good work to continue. As this conversion takes place, we will be shifting those All-Star funds to our Sports Foundation where most of our charitable focus lives (Charitable Society for Children) along with the mission of promoting excellence in amateur sports like our Hermann Trophy awards. The Sports Foundation has done a lot for the community over

H

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

the past few years, mostly through the Charitable Society for Children, which has donated in excess of $300,000 to various children’s charities. So awesome. The Sports Foundation plans to continue with a lot of the impactful work it is already doing along with other new civic engagement projects. One such project is the work the Club is already doing at the Youth & Family Center. The Youth & Family Center, our neighbor downtown, works to help local youth, seniors and families achieve their full potential, bringing the community together through fellowship and promoting a healthy lifestyle — values that the MAC shares. The MAC has partnered with the Center on several occasions, including providing gift baskets for families on holidays. Last month, several past and present Board Members joined with the center for an event called Snacks with Santa. With the assistance of the Sports Foundation, the Club will continue to work to assist their organization with various projects. One big ask is assistance in getting their basketball court replaced for the kids, which we are currently working on. We are so excited to strengthen our partnership with this inspiring organization, and we encourage everyone to lend support. If you’d like to become a member of the All-Star Program and help with a small monthly donation, please contact Larry Absheer at 314-604-3890 to learn how you can help. Heading into the new year, our Membership numbers continue to climb! As we march on toward our cap of 2,500 Members, we are increasing the initiation fee to $2,500. If you have any friends or family members who are interested in joining the Club, make sure they send their paperwork to Membership by Jan. 10 to get in prior to the increase taking effect (see page 10 for more details). The Club is in terrific shape as we enter the New Year! Let me end with a huge shoutout and thanks to everyone for your support of our employee holiday fund. Our employees all enjoyed a merrier Christmas due to your generosity so thank you, thank you, thank you on behalf of all of our great staff! Happy New Year! F See you at the Club!

INCREASE JAN. 10

From our newly updated fitness spaces and health and wellness offerings to the bar and dining space renovations, the MAC has never been healthier and more vibrant! “We have been seeing a record-setting number of new Members joining the Missouri Athletic Club in recent months,” said Rodney Stoyer, Director of Membership. “Word has certainly gotten out that the Missouri Athletic Club is the place to be.” Members, if you have friends or family members who are interested in joining the Club, the time is now! The best reason to join now is that the Club is raising the initiation fee in January to $2,500 for Jr. Resident and Resident Members, and $1,250 for Associate Members. Membership applications submitted by Jan. 10, 2022, will still pay the current $1,500 initiation fee. “The value, camaraderie and great employees of the MAC continues to resonate with new Members. Our theme of membership is to seek exceptional human beings to be in the room,” said Duke Niedringhaus, chairman of the Membership Committee. “Watching new Members experiencing the MAC camaraderie at the Jack Buck Grille or social events confirms our theme is working to drive growth.” Contact Becky Gan to learn more at 314-539-4486 or bgan@mac-stl.org. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Jenny Dembiec CD: Tell the MAC about yourself. JD: I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, moved to Pennsylvania, then college brought me to St. Louis. After graduation, I moved to California but then found myself back in St. Louis for my final move. My husband, Scott, and I have planted our roots here and are raising our two boys, Hayden (10) and Levi (8). We love St. Louis and are here to stay. CD: What activities are you involved in at the Club? JD: I have really enjoyed being active and involved at the MAC. I am active in the Women’s Initiative Group, Women’s Business Owner Roundtable and the Women’s Tennis League. I also love regularly attending yoga, HIIT, TRX, Tone Time, and tennis classes. CD: What are your three favorite Club events and why? JD: Women of Distinction Luncheon: I am in awe of the amazing women that are recognized at this event. I feel privileged to hear them speak and learn so much from their stories and successes. Ladies Squash Social: This event combines three things I love: activity, fellowship and fun. Getting together with other MAC women to play squash and sip on some Prosecco at the conclusion is an amazing combination. Christmas with Santa: the joy of the season is captured in this event. The MAC transforms into such a magical place with fun activities and great food. It is the perfect event for the holidays, and we look forward to it each and every year. CD: Tell us some of your favorite memories at the Club. JD: I have so many wonderful memories at the MAC, many of which include my children. Watching both my sons, Hayden and Levi, learn and then fall in love with tennis and squash at the MAC has become one of my favorite memories. Seeing the joy and drive in their eyes for tennis and squash gives this mom a happy heart. Also, getting to know many of the women at the MAC through exercise classes and events and becoming wonderful friends has been priceless. Also, enjoying the pool with friends on those hot summer

12 F CHERRY DIAMOND

days will be memories my family and I will always remember. CD: How long have you been a Member of the Club? JD: We joined the MAC in June of 2017. CD: Why did you join the MAC? JD: We had many friends that were members, and it was the perfect place to be active, social, and involved. The MAC has offered us a place to learn new things, meet new people, deepen our friendships, and improve ourselves. CD: Tell us a bit about the history of RxCOMMEND and what your company does? JD: I started RxCOMMEND in 2019. I had become very ill with several autoimmune diseases which left me very fatigued and with near-debilitating muscle soreness. I was unable to work out or exhaust myself for almost a year. I wanted to get back to the active person that I had always been, and I started to search for a solution. I started researching CBD and engrained myself in the industry. I spent almost a year before my company launched talking with hemp growers, CBD manufacturers, and reading every medical article and published journal on CBD. After testing, adjusting, reformulating, testing again, and perfecting our products, RxCOMMEND made its official debut at the 2019 MAC Sip and Shop. CD: Why do you believe RxCOMMEND is helpful for Members? JD: RxCOMMEND provides the highest-quality CBD products and a source that Members can trust. This is critical in an unregulated industry. Members have access to the purest CBD products that are made from organically-grown USA Industrial-Registered Hemp and manufactured in our FDA-registered, certified-GMP and ISO9001 facilities. CD: What makes you passionate about your company? JD: I know my purpose in life is to help people. RxCOMMEND gives me an opportunity to help people feel and live better. I have never been healthier or happier, and I want to give that to others. CD: Tell us about your life outside of the Club and RxCOMMEND. JD: I play bass guitar and write lyrics. My passion for music did not translate into a singing voice. I may have the worst singing voice on the planet, but at least I can keep a good beat with my bass. I am involved and volunteer at my sons’ school and try to hang out with them as much as they will allow. CD: Is there anything else that you’d like to share with the Club that we haven’t asked? JD: I would like to add that the MAC has an amazing staff. From the fitness instructors to the tennis and squash instructors, to the wait staff, to the housekeeping staff, and the leaders and administrators, I enjoy seeing and interacting with all of them. F

JACK BUCK SPORTS AWARDS

MAC SPORTS EVENT

GARRY UNGER, ALEX FENDLER AND DAVID BACKES. FENDLER WAS THE INAUGURAL RECIPIENT OF THE JIM RYAN TROPHY

Celebrating St. Louis Sports

The 52nd Annual Jack Buck Sports Awards presented by Redbird Carriers A sold-out crowd filled the Missouri Room for one of the most popular traditional Club events. The 52nd annual Jack Buck Awards presented by Redbird Carriers celebrated the accomplishments of the best in St. Louis sports. For more than a half-century, an impressive list of Hall of Famers, All-Stars and coaching greats have been honored at this banquet, and this year was no exception. Recently inducted Pro Football Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce received the Stan “the Man” Award in recognition of his on-field contributions as well as the positive impact he continues to make in the St. Louis community through his Foundation. Bruce said that when he is asked what team he played for, he is sure to say the ST. LOUIS Rams. Earlier this year, our community lost one of its great sports icons with the passing of Bobby Plager. In 2019, Plager received the Legends Award at the Buck Awards. This year, the award was renamed the Bob Plager Legends Award. Fittingly the first recipients of the award were two former St. Louis Blues captains, Garry Unger and David Backes. Each reflected on the impact Bob Plager had on their careers and how he instilled in them pride in playing for the Blues. The event featured the debut of a new award. The Jim

Ryan Trophy, named in honor of the long-time MAC Member and Minnesota Golden Gopher, is awarded to a top youth hockey player in the St. Louis area. The inaugural winner of the award was Alex Fendler from Vianney High School. World Wide Technology Raceway owner Curtis Francois received the Jack Buck Award. Earlier this year his landed a coveted NASCAR Cup Series race for St. Louis. Olympic legend Jackie Joyner Kersee presented the award and praised Francois for his community engagement efforts in the Metro East. Paul Goldschmidt received the Sports Personality of the Year Award. Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith presented the award and said that Goldy was the perfect fit for the Cardinals. Saint Louis University soccer Coach Kevin Kalish received the Carl O. Bauer award for returning the program to national prominence. Tom Ackerman once again did a masterful job as the master of ceremonies and delivered an entertaining opening monologue highlighted by some jabs at St. Louis sports fans’ favorite villain Stan Kroenke. The event was not only enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd at the MAC, but also enjoyed by a listening audience from across the country on KMOX Radio. F

MAC Apollos Sing in the Holiday Season Holly, Jolly Holiday Breakfast

The MAC Apollos kicked off the season with jolly ol’ St. Nick and caroling with friends. Friends and co-workers gathered for a special after-work cocktail. Beginning at 5 p.m., Members began trickling into the Jack Buck Grille for a pre-event drink and cigar with the Apollos. After a bit of mingling, members of the Apollos slowly made their way toward Apollos Director Marc Strathman and the piano strategically placed in between the Grille and Rendezvous Room. They broke into favorite carols such as “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night” while Members came to watch. The night was made even more special when Santa made an appearance and joined in on the merriment. F

Art Society November Meeting On Nov. 9, the Art Society hosted its first guest speaker, Washington, Miss., artist Bryan Haynes, for a reception and presentation in the art lounge. Music by guitarist Kirk Hanser welcomed Members and guests as they enjoyed cocktails and appetizers. They had the chance to view paintings by the artist before being transported through an illustrative and nostalgic history of the St. Louis region. Haynes started his career as a commercial illustrator working in a theatrical Art Deco style and quickly became sought-after for his carefully-calculated yet narrative compositions celebrating midwestern people and places – a style he calls New Regionalism. A wildly talented and accomplished, yet humble man, he shared stories and slides of the works spanning his career and magnificent murals he has contributed to the art scene. The Club is lucky to have in their art collection a fine emblematic illustration by Haynes of the MAC spirit. Come see it proudly hanging in the art lounge! Join the more than 80 Members of the Art Society to support programming like this and learn about the Club’s art collection and local arts community. The next event is on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. in the art lounge. Contact Kara Kelpe for more details, or register for the event online, kkelpe@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4408. F
