LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT ummer is officially in full swing, and it’s my favorite time of year: graduation parties, family vacations, and opportunities to spend quality time making memories with families and friends. And on the heels of last summer’s uncertainty, we have a newfound appreciation of this great time of year with energy and excitement at both Clubhouses. The Sportsman’s Club recently reopened the lunch buffet, welcoming back the downtown community who made this mainstay in their lives, and the West Clubhouse pool is fully reopened with reservations no longer required. Banquets and weddings are returning to both Clubhouses, and if you have an event, please think MAC first! In June, committee meetings for the year kicked off, and we have been fortunate to have a number of new Members join committees. Thank you to all who are serving on or leading committees this year. Committees are a great way to learn more about the Club, provide input, and get the opportunity to work with other Members and staff. We have prioritized leveraging the strength of our engaged membership and harnessing their passion for the betterment of the Club. Besides the Committees, we continue with several task forces from last year: Civic Engagement, Brand Strategy and Architecture, Safety and Diversity and Inclusion. We will be kicking off several new task forces as well, Member Engagement, Club Visioning and Purpose and Partnerships and Reciprocals. These task forces will focus on making the MAC the best place to be by improving our amenities. In July, we celebrate our nation’s birthday. The Fourth of July represents so much more than just a fun holiday. It is a celebration of America. And more importantly, a celebration of freedom: freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. And the Downtown St. Louis celebration is back in full effect. Fireworks will return to downtown as Fair Saint Louis is bringing back fireworks under the Arch on July 4. The MAC will participate in the annual America’s Birthday Parade, kicking off at 10 a.m. on July 3 with our Jack Buck Grille open that morning for breakfast. We hope many of you will join us for what should be a great event at the Downtown Clubhouse! I am happy to share with you the strength and growth of our membership. We added 49 brand new Memberships in May, and we currently have 2,316 Members as of June 16. To put it in perspective, when we closed both Clubhouses in March 2020, we had 2,370. Thank you to our Membership Department and the Membership Committee as they have done

a fantastic job. If you see a new Member around the Clubhouses, introduce yourself and share why the MAC is important to you! Reminder: For every new Member referred by a Member between now and Aug. 1, the referring Member earns a $500 platinum card to spend at the Club to spend on everything from personal training to dinner and drinks in the Jack Buck Grille. Regarding the Members, I wanted to use this article each month to highlight a couple of our Members. In June, the MAC celebrated a 70-year Member, Jack Bodine. I had the honor of having lunch with Jack and his wife Mary Jane, where he shared fun stories from his time at the Club. They have such passion for the Club and a strong desire for the Club to be around for future generations to enjoy. Please take some time to read Jack’s story in this month’s issue. Second, I wanted to highlight Carl Winters, whom many of you know. Carl Winters is a prime example of an engaged Member. Carl joined the Club on Oct. 17, 1985. He’s chaired the Mark Twain Society since 2012 and served on the Board from 1994-97. Carl is also a great supporter of Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament, a Club Life Committee Member for many, many years and has served on the Athletic Committee, Membership Committee, Golf Committee, Food and Beverage Committee to name a few. He also helps facilitate the distilling of our annual MAC Bourbon (now that is a fun role to have at the Club!). Carl is a great supporter of staff – always recognizes staff’s accomplishments and helps whenever possible. What I love most about Carl is his positive spirit and drive to make the MAC the place to be. Carl is always there with a new idea or a funny joke. Carl, thank you for your selfless service to the MAC. The MAC is a better place because of you! The MAC is strong because our Members are willing to serve to ensure the MAC is around for future generations. For all those who have served or are serving, thank you! If you see me around the Club, make sure you sure stop me and engage me. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this premier Club. ANNUAL VETERANS DAY COMMEMORATION
Call for Nominations
Save the date! This year’s Veterans Day Commemoration event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Downtown Clubhouse. At this annual event, the MAC will honor the Veteran of the Year, a retired or former member of the U.S. military from the St. Louis area who demonstrates support of veterans and the U.S. in everyday life, who serves as a role model
for other citizens, and who is respected for his or her service to veterans. If you know a deserving veteran, nominate him or her for Veteran of the Year. The Veterans Day Committee will review the nominations and select the individual to receive the award based on the criteria listed on the nomination form. To nominate an individual, complete the nomination form located online
under Member Central > Documents and submit to Katie Maurer by Friday, Aug. 20. For each submission, include a brief description of why this nominee should be selected for the MAC Honored Veteran of the Year. LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER t the MAC, I’m lucky to work alongside a fantastic group of staff that keeps both Clubhouses running smoothly. MAC employees go out of their way to deliver a premier experience to our Members, and I’m so grateful for their hard work and dedication, especially after a difficult year. In this month’s column, I wanted to give you a peek behind the curtain at some of the internal workings of the MAC. This is a group of people who works alongside you, the Members, to make this Club a premier place to be. We show our appreciation to our staff in many ways each year, including hosting an employee appreciation day at a Cardinals game, honoring those celebrating work anniversaries at the Employee Service Awards, hosting an Employee Benefit Fair, and treating them to ice cream days and steak days in the employee cafeteria – along with awarding staff with a holiday bonus each year, thanks to our generous Members. Every few months, we put out a newsletter for the employees called Inside MAC that highlights employee birthdays and milestones, new hires, distinguished employees of the quarter and more. Brian and Kelly got engaged last summer, 7/19/2020, and are excited to start their life together in their new home! Congrats Brian! Chef Charles Williams, West Clubhouse, and his wife, Jacqueline, welcomed their 2nd child Eleanor Lane on 4/26/2021 at 11:37 p.m. weighing 7 lbs. 8oz. and 21 inches long. Big brother Rhetty is so excited to have a baby sister. He has been super helpful keeping her pacifier in and letting mom and dad know when she is upset. Congrats Williams family! Crystal and Fred Nelson, Downtown Guest Services Manager and Security Supervisor celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary! They celebrated with family and friends in May. Carson Schaper, Downtown banquet server, has been gaining a lot of traction on his YouTube Channel, Carson’s Aquatics. Carson took his love of fishing, aquariums, and making videos and combined them all together. He has over 60,000 subscribers. He was asked to join one of the largest aquarium conventions, Aquashella, this summer in Orlando, Florida. If you’re interested in aquariums or fish, check out his channel!

70+ YEARS AT THE MAC The MAC Celebrates Jack Bodine

On May 7, the MAC celebrated 70-year Member Jack Bodine by treating him and his wife Mary Jane to a special luncheon at the West Clubhouse honoring his time at the Club. After which, the Cherry Diamond had the opportunity to sit with Bodine and learn about his time here. CD: What did the MAC look like when you first joined? JB: The Club Downtown? The West Clubhouse wasn’t here when I joined since it’s only about 25 years old. I spent my early days at the Club Downtown. I spent a lot of time there while I was working downtown. Then, when I moved away from downtown in 1960, I get there as much as I did originally, but we’d still go down there on special occasions. They have a membership dinner for the 50-year Members. We also go down there on Veterans Day because I served in the Navy in World War II. CD: What did your life look when you joined? JB: The building downtown was built in the early 1900s, and it’s the same building today as it was then. It doesn’t look a whole lot different except it’s been modernized, but it’s pretty much the same as it looked when I joined. I used to go down there in the evenings and work out and have dinner. CD: What activities were you involved in? JB: I wasn’t involved in a whole lot except on the 5th floor I’d swim. That was before the days of the special clubs. I was a campaign manager for one of my friends when he ran for the Board of Governors. He was elected and went on to be President. That was Carl Hogan. He has passed on, but his three sons belong to the MAC — Carl Jr., David and Brian. CD: That’s great! Do you have any favorite memories at the Club? JB: Yeah. I think when I was Carl Hogan’s
manager. I moved into the Club, and stayed there, spending a couple of weeks on the telephone calling everybody in the roster, asking them to vote for Carl Hogan. It paid off because he won! CD: So when did the two of you meet? JB: [Mary Jane and I] have been friends for years. In fact, tomorrow’s our 41st anniversary. But I was 53 when I was married. I had a couple of close calls, but I was single. Mary Jane was married to a good friend of mine, and he was killed in an automobile accident. So we were old friends, and after a couple of years, I talked her into marrying me. We were married at our church and had a reception at Mary Jane’s house on a Sunday afternoon. CD: So how do you use the Club today? JB: We primarily come out here to eat. Before the pandemic, we used to work out downstairs three times a week. We would come out Monday, Wednesday and Friday to work out and then have lunch. But we haven’t gotten back yet, we are waiting for things to clear up a little more. CD: So how does it feel to be honored here? JB: How does it feel to be honored? I’m overwhelmed! I’ve never had anything like this before. My life has been very mundane. As I said, I’ve never expected this. CD: Do you have anything to say to the MAC? JB: Let me just say this: I can’t thank you enough for the wonderful experience I’ve had for these 70 years. Even more than that because my father was a Member. I came to the Downtown MAC then. That’s where I learned to swim. My reaction is thanks for everything, and I appreciate all you’ve done. After the luncheon, Bodine and his wife made a generous contribution to the MAC's Preservation Foundation. F
THIRD QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT
he third quarter of the Club’s fiscal year ended May 31, 2021. May was a busy month around the Clubhouses as May weddings were in full force and Members began to enjoy summer programming. We’ve also welcomed many new Members to the MAC family over the past few months, so you’ve probably noticed some new faces around the Club. Speaking of new Members, our Member headcount in May was 2,237 compared to 2,314 last May. While we are still behind last year’s number, May was the fourth month in a row that our Membership has increased, and we are expecting this trend to continue in June and July as well. For the nine months, total operating revenue was $5.5 million compared to $7.1 million for the same period last year. May’s revenue alone topped $1 million for the first time since December 2019, mainly due to pent up wedding business at the Downtown Clubhouse which also had a positive impact on overnight rooms revenue. Our operating departments collectively posted a year-to-date loss of $1.1 million compared to last year’s loss of $400,000. The departments most heavily impacted were Rooms and Food and Beverage at both Clubhouses. Unallocated costs continued to come in under budget and less than last year. Overall, unallocated costs have produced a positive variance of $500,000 vs budget and $340,000 compared to last year.

At the bottom line, the Club has experienced positive operating cash flow of $2.3 million year to date. This is $1.9 million better than the budget, and $1.1 ahead of last fiscal year. This positive performance is largely due to the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC). Looking ahead through August, the end of the fiscal year, we anticipate increased revenue in most areas, although the totals will continue to trend less favorable than budget. On the other hand, expenses are expected to remain less than plan which will allow the Club to achieve its overall budget for the remaining months. Numerous events are scheduled in the coming months and summer is off to a great start! Come out and take advantage of all your Club has to offer and remember to introduce your friends and colleagues to the Club to receive $500 in Club credits for each referral! MAC Hosts Hermann Trophy Banquet
The Missouri Athletic Club was filled on Thursday, May 27 to watch the Hermann Trophy be presented to the top male and female college soccer players in the country for the 2020-21 season. A packed crowd filled the Downtown Clubhouse as college soccer’s rising stars gathered for the presentation of the prestigious award. Oregon State junior forward Gloire Amanda (Edmonton, Alberta) and Florida State junior midfielder Jaelin Howell (Lone Tree, Colo.) received the MAC Hermann Trophy — a 10-pound crystal soccer ball — as National Players of the Year in NCAA Division I men and women’s soccer based on voting conducted by member coaches. Howell was named to the All-ACC First Team, the ACC AllTournament Team, and named ACC Midfielder of the Year. She added First Team All-American to her accolades in May and made her debut for the senior US Women’s National Team last November. This year’s runners up for the women’s award were North Carolina junior midfielder Brianna Pinto (Durham, N.C.) and Florida State senior defender Malia Berkely (Liberty Township, Ohio). Amanda is a former standout from the Vancouver Whitecaps residency program and was also named a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American while leading Oregon State to a 9-5-0 record this season and an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament. Runners-up for the men’s award were Indiana sophomore forward Victor Bezerra (Chicago, Ill.) and Pittsburgh sophomore forward Valentin Noel (Niort, France). Nearly 80 of the top high school soccer players in the St. Louis area closed out their prep careers and treated fans to two entertaining matches at the 36th annual High School All-Star Games presented by the Missouri Athletic Club. In the opening game, Emily Gaebe (Union) led her team to victory (5-0) and earned her team’s Most Valuable Player Award. Sophia Cross (Fort Zumwalt South) was named the MVP for the North squad. In the boys game, Zach Stapleton (Clayton) was named MVP of the North team, who beat their opponents 6-5. Zach Renz (Timberland) was named MVP for the South team. Summer Law Clerk MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM The MAC offers a special summer Membership opportunity for summer law clerks interning at local law firms! On June 9, the Membership Department hosted a reception for Members of the MAC legal community to welcome summer law clerks and representatives from their respective law firms to meet and mingle in the Art Lounge to kick off our 2021 Summer Law Clerk Membership program. The evening was wonderfully successful, resulting in 11 new Summer Law Clerk Membership commitments. The MAC offers a special individual three-month Membership opportunity for summer law clerks, as an enhancement to their respective law firm’s summer associate intern program. During June, July and August 2021, these new Summer Law Clerk Members will enjoy access to both MAC locations and experience the many social and professional networking benefits found at the Club. Splashing Into
Summer
O
n Saturday, May 29, the MAC pool opened once again for MAC Members and their families to enjoy. Since the Club acquired the West Clubhouse from Town & Country Racquet Club
in 1995, the pool has been the coolest place to catch some rays or socialize with friends on a sweltering summer day. During the summer months, the pool draws many families looking to beat the heat.

M A C F E AT U R E After an abnormal year in 2020, where the pool did not open until June 15, the MAC was glad to be open at full capacity once again this summer. Members are invited to bring their families to enjoy a relaxing day by the pool or stop by the snack bar for a quick treat. Though the Club leadership initially implemented a reservation system to allow for a less crowded pool experience, the program was quickly eliminated due to overwhelming Member feedback. MAC management hoped this program would enhance the Member experience, based on positive feedback from last summer's use of the reservation system. However, this summer, the majority of Members voiced their opinions against having to make reservations for the pool. From an operational standpoint, too, clearing out one group to bring in another proved to be cumbersome. The Club appreciates everyone's input in helping create the best pool experience for Members. In addition to regular pool hours, the pool will also be open for adult lap swimming on weekdays from daybreak to 7 a.m. and 1-9 p.m. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, the lap lanes are removed from 12-5 p.m. At all other times, lap swimming is available. "It’s great just seeing everyone back at the pool, enjoying it with family and friends," said Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro. "It’s been a pretty busy start to the summer, the whole Club has really picked up. Most of all I think members are just happy to be using their Club again and everything feels back to normal. I hope to see everyone at the pool this summer." F

BOXING NIGHT Packs a Punch
The much-anticipated 16th annual Boxing Championship, sponsored by Midwest Regional Bank, took place in the Missouri Room on Thursday, May 10. After being postponed due to the pandemic, Members jumped at the chance to attend, and the event sold out in the first minute that general admission opened. The evening began with cocktails and cigars in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby and Art Lounge. This was followed by dinner in
the Missouri Room around the ring. Finally, at 8 p.m., the main event began! Governor Justin Fowler was the emcee for this event, which consisted of match-ups between accomplished and promising boxers from both local and out-of-state gyms. Attendees were treated to 10 riveting bouts of boxing along with a heightened sense of MAC camaraderie. F

Thursday, July 8 F 5:30 p.m. This squash shootout event is open to all levels (A, B, C and D). All rounds are the first to five points, and the final is the first to three points. This is a double-elimination event.
Saturday, Aug. 7 F 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. This doubles tournament invites layers of all levels to pair up with a partner and play 2/3 rounds in each sport: squash, tennis and pickleball. Your point scores from each sport will accumulate to your team's overall final score. Scoring for all events is one game to 11 points.
5:30 p.m. - Live random draw 5:45 p.m. - Matches commence Entry fee: $30 Includes beers by the courts as well as drink specials and hors d'oeuvres in the 1903 bar following the matches.

Many areas of the website may look familiar to Members, as we opted to keep the appearance and navigation largely the same to prevent confusion. MAC PARTNERS WITH he MAC now offers in-house physical therapy services. SSM Health was announced as the physical therapy provider for the MAC early last year. The clinic, located at the West Clubhouse, offers a one-ofa-kind environment, exclusive to MAC Members and their families, to provide preventative, rehabilitative and services that maximize function and promote well-being.

What to Expect Billy Ferris, PT, DPT, is the physical therapist for the clinic, which focuses on caring for each patient and helping the patient achieve his/her goals. During the initial appointment, Ferris will ask about each Member's injury, home environment, activity level, interests and goals. He will then provide a roadmap for treatment and, most importantly, help Members get back to daily life. Ferris will also check your strength and flexibility. During that first appointment, the goal is to provide information about: F The injury F The treatment plan and how it will help F The number of appointments to expect for treatment
Through therapy, he hopes to work together to help Members improve their quality of life and get back to the activities they enjoy.

Over the years, water fitness at the Downtown Clubhouse has taken several forms. Today, the Aquafit class, taught by Keisha, takes water aerobics to the next level. Three shoeshines are available for the price of two at the Downtown Clubhouse. Members will pay for two shoeshines and receive their third shoeshine for free when they bring in three pairs of shoes to be shined (all three pairs must be brought in at the same time to receive the special). Shoeshines are available Downtown in the Athletic Department MondayFriday from 5:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Members can also drop off their shoes in the Athletic Department anytime during operating hours, and they will get shined the next day that shoeshine is open. In 2021, the MAC will continue the tradition of honoring six women from the community and one Rising Star at the Women of Distinction event on Oct. 1. Members who know an outstanding woman from the St. Louis region who possesses excellence in her business/professional, personal, civic, or philanthropic role; growth in her endeavors or in helping facilitate growth as a mentor for others; grit/determination in pursuing her goals; and empathy in how she deals with others are asked to nominate them to be a 2021 Woman of Distinction. Around Town with the FYC Origami at the Garden On a beautiful June morning, you can find MAC Forever Young Members enjoying life almost anywhere. As the dappled sunlight and a gentle breeze belied the summer heat to come, they enjoyed a tram tour of the Missouri Botanical Garden to view the eighteen Origami in the Garden sculptures on exhibition. Along the paths, large metal figures duplicated their folded paper originals, creases and all. Sculpture names were as imaginative as their presence. Crane Unfolding greeted us at the visitor center while Paper Navigators floating on the water in the Japanese Garden recalled the paper boats they made in our childhood. Fanciful horses, cranes, white bison, squirrels, and other figures surprised us at every turn. Business Development Group Welcomes Jeremy Hodess Military History Book Club to Discuss Nuclear Folly by Serhii Plokhy This month, the Military History Book Club turns to the Cuban Missile Crisis with Nuclear Folly: A History of the Cuban Missile Crisis by Serhii Plokhy, who will be the featured speaker at the MHC’s regular meeting on July 27. Nearly 30 years after the end of the Cold War, today’s world leaders are abandoning disarmament treaties, building up their nuclear arsenals, and exchanging threats of nuclear strikes. To survive this new atomic age, we must relearn the lessons of the most dangerous moment of the Cold War: the Cuban missile crisis. Plokhy’s Nuclear Folly offers an international perspective on the crisis, tracing the tortuous decision-making that produced and then resolved it, which involved John Kennedy and his advisers, Nikita Khrushchev and Fidel Castro, and their commanders on the ground. In breathtaking detail, Plokhy vividly recounts the young JFK being played by the canny Khrushchev; the hotheaded Castro willing to defy the USSR and threatening to align himself with China; the Soviet troops on the ground clearing jungle foliage in the tropical heat, and desperately trying to conceal nuclear installations on Cuba, which were nonetheless easily spotted by U-2 spy planes; and the hairraising near misses at sea that nearly caused a Soviet nuclear-armed submarine to fire its weapons. Drawing on a range of Soviet archival sources, including previously classified KGB documents, as well as White House tapes, Plokhy masterfully illustrates the drama and anxiety of those tense days, and provides a way for us to grapple with the problems posed in our present day. One way to anchor your family’s legacy at the MAC is to make a tax-deductible gift to the MAC Preservation Foundation in the name of your family or in the name of a special loved one. Another way is to designate the MAC or the MAC Preservation Foundation as a beneficiary on one of your retirement/investment accounts, or on a life insurance policy, or in your will or trust. MAC Joins Historic Tour 20 Years Ago In July of 2001, the MAC's Downtown Clubhouse became a stop on a historical tour of downtown St. Louis. This 21-stop walking tour left its permanent mark on the MAC with a special plaque detailing the historic significance of the Club. Other stops on this tour included the Old Courthouse, the International Fur Exchange Building and many more. The idea for the tour started when KMOX Radio's Charles Brennan founded Rediscover St. Louis in 1998 to help educate and inform the public about St. Louis's rich history. To kick off the tour, former Mayor Francis Slay cut a ribbon and led a group on the first offical tour (pictured right). F
