from the president February will be a busy time around the Club! We have so many activities and exciting events scheduled so we added an extra day to the month. After months of construction, Phase Two at the West Clubhouse will be open in February. This renovation was a direct result of the 2017 Membership Survey. Eighty-two (82%) percent of our members voted that the fitness facilities were the major factor in retaining their membership at our prestigious Club. The Board of Governors has worked closely with staff to deliver a center that can meet all your fitness and physical training requirements over the past three years. If you have not worked out, taken a fitness class, or just dropped by to see the new set up, please do. You will see your requests have been met and certainly exceeded. Thank you to the Board of Governors and staff for working together to deliver excellence. On Feb. 15, the Club will host the Preservation Foundation Ball to support the Building on Tradition Campaign. This fun evening of dining and dancing is a thank you and recognition of the supporters of this important project. This campaign has raised funds to focus on the restoration of the exterior of our Downtown Clubhouse. The building is on the National Historical list and a focal point on Washington Avenue. If you have not signed up to attend, please do so as soon as possible. I have chosen to honor Past President Kim Tucci (‘97-‘98) this month. Kim, along with Past Presidents Gerry Ortbals (‘02-‘03) and Don Gunn (‘75-‘76), were the founders of the Preservation Foundation. Their leadership and foresight allowed us to continue to invest in our bricks and mortar. I was honored to call Kim a friend and mentor. I would meet him for breakfast to get his guidance and direction. Past President Gunn was at the last breakfast I had with Kim. We commented that having breakfast with Kim was like sitting with the Pope. An hour-long breakfast was 45 minutes of people coming by
to kiss his ring. He was a legend at the MAC and in the community. We were blessed to have him so committed to the MAC. His spirit lives on in the Club and with the Preservation Foundation Ball. The MAC Herman Trophy Banquet was a sell-out and a celebration of collegiate soccer. Thank you to Past Governor Greg Beekman and his wife, Annie, along with Jim Wilson, MAC Communications Director, for hosting an evening of excellence. Stanford junior midfielder Catarina Macario and Clemson junior forward Robbie Robinson were presented as the winners of the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, at the annual banquet. U.S. Women’s National Team Star and former Hermann Trophy Winner Kelley O’Hara was the featured speaker. The MAC can only be as good as the member leadership that works with the staff to deliver the value-added experience the member expects. On Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Downtown Clubhouse we will be hosting the second Orientation to Club Governance. For any members that are interested in serving on the MAC Board of Governors or one of the five official MAC Committees, this is the time to explore the opportunities. There will be an informal presentation and overview of what is required. My three years on the board are flying by, and I am thankful for having the opportunity to work with many outstanding members and staff. As another incentive, refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. I hope to see as many people in the Art Lounge, starting at 5:30, as we did previous event at the West Clubhouse. The annual Good Fellowship Day will be Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Downtown Clubhouse. This long-time tradition invites new and existing members to experience the wide variety of athletics and events that are hosted by the Club. The old and new come together for a fun day of sports, food and libations. The event is complimentary.

The MAC in February cannot be the MAC without the annual Boxing Championship on Thursday, Feb. 27. If you don’t have tickets, please call catering, and we will place you on the waiting list. This year’s event sold out in 20 minutes. The evening starts at 6 p.m. with cocktails, 7 p.m. dinner and boxing at 8 p.m. Mark your calendar now for two big events in April! The Women of Distinction Luncheon is featured on April 3. The MAC honors six women from the St. Louis area that have proven themselves recipients for their demonstrations of excellence, growth, grit, determination and empathy. They are individuals who are making a difference in the community. The MAC and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association will honor the nation’s top men’s and women’s players and coaches at the College Basketball Awards Banquet at Downtown Clubhouse on April 13. At the Special Meeting of the Board of Governors held on Thursday, Jan. 16, the following were elected to serve as Officers for the 2020-2021 Board Year. The 105th President of the MAC is President-Elect Dan Lett. First Vice President is Governor Nat Walsh. Governor Jeff Moore was selected as the 2nd Vice President. Governor Gene Frederic will be the Secretary. The Treasurer for the 2020-2021 Board Year is Governor Cheri McLaughlin. The MAC is well-positioned for the future with these excellent leaders. I am thankful that the leap year gave us an extra day in February. We needed it to add all the dining, social and athletic activities for our members.

from the general manager Phase Two of the West Clubhouse fitness project is coming to a rapid close. Modifications have been ongoing in that space since the property was acquired, but this comprehensive total space revamp is the result of a lot of dedicated Club leaders and staff working together for years. We started the conceptualization and program development of this project as a result of the 2017 survey and input from our members. I believe we are about to deliver, and we could not be more pumped for everyone to see, enjoy and use all we’ll have to offer. You no longer have need for separate yoga, spin or high-intensity interval training non-MAC studios or youth spaces for parties, camps and fun activities. You’ll have it all right here at the MAC. The last piece of Phase Two to be finalized was our kids’ areas. Through spirited discussions, sharing of ideas and opinions on how to best approach the space, the Board of Governors voted to approve our team-recommended, multi-faceted climbing wall elements in a part of the space from a company called Walltopia. (Google it to see what we’re talking about.) Our team thoroughly researched and did in-depth studies of multiple options and came forward presenting their best approach for the room to our Planning Committee and then on up to our Board. We’re thrilled that the Board of Governors supported the idea and concept, and the ball is already in motion. The youth activity room will be unveiled a few weeks after the opening of the other areas, due to equipment lead time, but we believe it will be the “cherry on top” and something we can look forward to and will be the project’s completion. Upon the playing field in which I live, there are opinions from all directions of Club life. Imagine that. But, it’s always incredible
how we can debate, promote, disagree and agree in our board room and many times in very spirited fashion and that in the end, come up with what we believe are the best decisions and directions for the Club. The really astonishing and unique thing about the MAC (that always amazed me) is that after our Board meetings and the debates conclude, we move over to dinner and camaraderie. There is a very special MAC Board tradition I wish every member could experience where we go around the table and each person talks about what’s going on in their life, their family’s life and anything else important to them. At the conclusion of the last Board meeting, President Cantwell brought everybody together, and the shared dedication and love for the Club was so apparent. Our guests are almost always blown away, and again, it’s something I wish all of our members could really see and feel. In the end, everybody pulls together on whatever decisions were made and walks out united and with what’s best for the MAC as the drive of all we do. As we wrap Phase Two, I need to toss my hat off to our remarkable staff team who have worked so hard and for so long on this project. Paul Helfrich has spent unbelievable hours researching equipment, best practices, programming, the competition and all the things that go into transforming this space. He’s sat in countless meetings, all while being the front face to all of our fitness members who are in currently living in the cramped space and the dust. He never gets disappointed or rattled because he’s just so pumped with how the end product will look and function. Another big shout-out to Joy Holdmeier, who’s been so involved in our kids’ spaces, camps and programs. She and her team, which includes Bobby Thornton and various counselors, put in so

many hours of research and work. And of course, it’s all led by Jeff Tuhro, who has been knee-deep in this project for years. His vision, time and energy every step of the way have been invaluable. Also, huge thanks to clubhouse manager Darrin Harnetiaux, who’s been on the front line and in the dust every day. He has fielded so many questions and been our go-to guy. Thanks also go to our communications team, who have been keeping everyone posted on this project as it progresses. We also owe thanks to our partners on this project, including Past Governor Chris Hyams, owner of G. S. & S. Construction. They’ve done an amazing job pulling this together for us. I couldn’t be more thankful to be working with him and his talented team. I’d also like to thank Steve Burns and the V Three Studios architecture team, who envisioned years ago how this space could come together. Brenda Jones, owner of Design Expressions, and her team have once again knocked the design aspects out of the park. As a point of reference, this is the same team who envisioned, designed and created our 1903 bar and, of course, Phase One of the fitness areas. Together, we can’t wait for you to see these spaces, enjoy our programing and take advantage of the new services coming down the line. We’re almost there, and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and support as we worked through this project and these tremendous upgrades for your Club. We believe you’re going to be as excited as we are. See you at the Club,
Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

A packed crowd filled the Downtown Clubhouse as college soccer’s rising stars gathered for the presentation of the prestigious award. Clemson University junior forward Robbie Robinson (Camden, S.C.) and Stanford University junior forward Catarina Macario (San Diego, Calif.) received the MAC Hermann Trophy — a 10-pound crystal soccer ball — as National Players of the Year in NCAA Division I men and women’s soccer based on voting conducted by NCAA Division I coaches. Robinson clocked 18 goals, nine assists and 45 points over the course of 19 matches in the 2019 season. The 45 points put him at the No. 1 spot in the nation, and he tied for the national lead with 18 goals. His undeniable skills led to him being named ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2019, and he was also named a First Team All-South Region honoree and a First Team All-American. TA: I started on the 3-11 p.m. shift. Then, one other person quit, so I got moved up to the day after that. My boss eventually retired, and I took the position of acting supervisor at the front desk. I worked in room sales for seven years. Then, I went back to the front desk because they made some changes by opening up to travel sites or end-points as they called them at that point, and that’s where I stayed. CD: How has the Club changed over the years? TA: I started at a time when women couldn’t even be in the lobby unless accompanied by their husbands. Changes have come with

technology as well. I’ve enjoyed meeting new people with great ideas, especially managers. I’ve probably seen 10 general managers since I’ve been here — all with different personalities and new changes. CD: What’s been the most rewarding part of your job here? TA: Meeting members. They almost become like family. We don’t go to each other’s houses, but especially towards the end, we have a couple of older members who would ask something like, “could you sew on a button?” CD: Looking forward, why are you excited about retirement? TA: I have a bucket list of things I’d like to do. I have two horses that I don’t get to see as much as I’d like, so I’m anxious to be with them a lot and improve my riding. I have some unfinished business with schooling that I wanted to do in the past and haven’t. I would like to take a computer class so I can say, “look, I did it!” CD: Do you have any final thoughts? TA: As 2020 ushers in a new year with hopes
of many good changes and hopes. 2020 also holds a change for me as well. In February, I will be retiring after almost 40 years. It has been my home away from home. I’ve seen many members grow old and pass away. I’ve seen members’ children grow up and have children of their own. The Gaertner boys, Gary and Mark, come to mind. Mr. Bommarito’s son was a baby when he used to set him on the desk to see the girls at the front desk. Now his son sets his son on the front desk. I started at the MAC when women couldn’t join the Club or be in certain areas — a time when we didn’t have computers, faxes, scanners or cell phones. As time gave way to change, we have women who are elected members of the Board, we have computers, smartphones taking many of the tasks. The Club has been a great place to work. One of the blessings has been to see my sister, who works the 3-11 p.m. shift come down the hall for shift release. Like most, I have a bucket list of things I’d like to fulfill, so I’m looking to God for his direction. Again, the Club has been a great place to work.

WEST CLUBHOUSE FITNESS CENTER RENOVATION
Fitness UPDATE
The West Clubhouse is in the final weeks of its Phase Two fitness renovations, and the new and upgraded spaces are taking shape. Athletic director Jeff Tuhro said drywalling on the project is complete, along with ductwork and installation of the sprinkler system. As of the second week of January, the crews were beginning work on the ceilings and starting to paint. Flooring for the cardio room, spinning room, high intensity room and the hallways was delivered on Jan. 8 and was set to be installed in the near future. The metabolic assessment software had been ordered and was on its way, and furniture for the hallways and common areas had been purchased and installed upon delivery. Tuhro also noted that in addition to glass installation on the back wall of the racquetball courts, the courts’ floors will also be sanded, abraded and rescreened. “We’re getting near the end,” he said.
Youth Programs UPDATE The finished Phase Two project will feature two new spaces for MAC youth: the youth classroom and the youth activity space. Programs manager Joy Holdmeier said use of the youth classroom will be in full swing by spring break, complete with smart board technology, hookups for laptops and more. She noted that some of the programming members can look forward to in the youth classroom includes study hall, tutoring, babysitting and safety classes, little med school, art classes, music lessons and more. As of Jan. 8, plans were still being finalized for the youth activity room, but Holdmeier said the former racquetball court will be multi-purpose dynamic space. “We’re thrilled to have a designated space for more camps and a space for kids to learn and grow,” she says. “Right now, we don’t have a space for kids to do homework or sit and read, so this room will be perfect for that.”
The AudioFetch technology offers cardio room users the opportunity to download the AudioFetch App from iTunes or Google Play and listen to TV audio directly from their smartphone or mobile device. 14 F Cherry Diamond F FEB 2020

Racquet Stringing Tennis Tip By Kim Steinmetz
Players often wonder if it is time to get their racquets restrung. When asked this question, we tennis pros may push on the strings of the racquet in question with our thumbs or tap the strings with our racquet to listen for a dull ping. These methods of testing string tension work if the strings are very loose, but if they’re not, the USTA suggests that you have your racquet strung in a year, the same number of times you play in a week. I would say, if you can’t remember the last time you had it done and/or you feel like you haven’t been playing very well, then get your racquet restrung! Playing with new strings can make you feel like you’re playing with a brand-new racquet! For that matter, every time I replace my grip, I have that same amazing feeling. If the resulting better play is all in your head, then all the better, for, as they say, “tennis is 90 percent mental!” 18 F Cherry Diamond F FEB 2020
TENNIS PRO SPOTLIGHT
Trey Owens
Trey Owens (T.O.) was hired to teach tennis at the MAC in 2013, fresh out of college where he earned his degree in Sports Management. He began playing tennis at the age of 6, participating in tournaments at age 8, earned Missouri Valley rankings from age 12-18 and played collegiate tennis, which gave him plenty of on-court experience. Although T.O. was not planning on pursuing tennis as a career, he began looking for coaching positions after working with many St. Louis junior players while at UMSL. T.O. now leads junior performance tennis clinics and teaches private lessons at the MAC. He enjoys helping kids grow and develop as players and as people, teaching them lessons that extend beyond tennis into everyday life. When asked for what he looks for in a young tennis player, T.O. doesn’t say athleticism or skill, he says, “determination to get better…for them to be the best versions of themselves.” As an employee, T.O. is well-liked and respected for his work ethic, skills and integrity, and was chosen as the West Clubhouse’s final 2019 Employee of the Quarter.

HAPPY
Summer! Mark your calendars for the upcoming MAC Happy Hours. In addition to serving up great drink specials, these events are a great opportunity to meet new members and introduce friends and colleagues to the Club. No reservations are required.
Thirty years ago, members celebrated Valentine’s Day with their sweethearts in the Missouri Room. At this party, sponsored by the MAC’s Under 40 organization, couples had the chance to shake, rattle and roll to the sounds of Lenny Klinger’s Galaxy Band. The party got hopping early with cocktails in the Art Lounge and then moved upstairs where dinner was served. They finished the night on the dance floor.
