The MAC’s member headcount increased by 57 this past year. More than 700 members visited the Stanley Cup at the Downtown Clubhouse. from the president What is a MAC membership? It is being a member of the premier club in the region. It is the ability to be involved in tremendous member-focused events and activities. Here are just a few: On Monday, Oct. 14, more than 700 members and their guests packed the Downtown Clubhouse to have pictures taken with the Stanley Cup. Thank you to past Governor Carl Winters, Chris Zimmerman (President and CEO of the Blues and MAC member) and our General Manager Wally Smith for making this happen. It was a great day to be a MAC member. The hard work to make this event run smoothly was incredible. I was honored to speak at the Big M Syndicate dinner meeting on Oct. 14. The Big M Syndicate is one of the many conversational “tables” at the MAC. The Big M has been around since 1961 and is made up of 22 members who share banter, discussion and laughter. It was a great evening to spend time with the many MAC members that have been on the board as either Governors or Past Presidents. Their opinions and discussions were lively and informative. It was a privilege to spend time with them. This group of members is one of the many groups and Clubs Within the Club at the MAC. The Wall Street Table, LB Table, 12 Apostles, Mark Twain Society, along with the other social clubs, provide members with opportunities to meet and know other members with a common interest. With more than 175 social gatherings being held at the MAC in a year, I am sure you can find some that interest you. Thank you to the Missouri Athletic Club membership for voting yes to amend the bylaws to recognize a married significant other as a
full member. Of the members that voted from the 2,325 eligible voters, almost 80 percent voted in favor of this change. This change is not a new direction for the Club but just a reflection of inclusion and growth as we strive to remain the premier athletic, dining and social club for business in the region. On Oct. 15 at the MAC West Clubhouse, Past President Mike Schoedel hosted an evening of food, drink and discussion with many potential committee and board members. The election of officers for the Club is not held until May of 2020, but this was unofficially the kickoff. We had a great evening talking to members about the leadership opportunities and answering any questions that might impact a member’s decision to run. Based on the event and the outstanding members that were present, the future of the Club leadership is bright. Phase Two construction at the West Clubhouse is well underway. The Board of Governors and staff realize that day-to-day routines, the placement of equipment or movement of a class to a new location can be inconvenient for the members. We are trying to make any changes as minimal as possible. The end results will provide a first-class upgrade of the fitness area. Please continue your fitness routine, but look around every day and see the changes that are one step closer to providing you with the facilities you have asked for. The holiday season is nearing, and the Club will be the center of many social settings. Please look over your busy calendars and see if you have some of the following events scheduled. The Veterans Day Commemoration is Thursday, Nov. 7, and Sip and Shop will be

on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the West Clubhouse. The Apollos Fall Concert is on Friday, Nov. 22, where they will dazzle you when they present Goldsingers: The Members with the Golden Voices. On Thursday, Nov. 28, celebrate Thanksgiving lunch with family and friends in the beautiful Missouri Room. The 50th Jack Buck Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5. The event, presented by Maryville University, is one of the premier MAC events and always sells out. Make sure you have your seat secured so you can be present for the 2019 Sports Personality of the Year Award, which will be presented to Blues coach Craig Berube. The event will be hosted by MAC member and KMOX personality Tom Ackerman. Please check the MAC website for additional information. The Trulaske Foundation Campaign continues. As we get near the end of the year and you are doing some tax planning, please remember the building at 405 Washington Avenue. We have a tremendous gift and opportunity to restore the outside of our building. Downtown St. Louis and the MAC are forever linked together. Our building has been, is and will continue to be the center of business in the region. The Missouri Athletic Club is your Club. Continue to use the facilities, invite friends, recruit new members and have the experience that makes the MAC outstanding. Thanks to the staff for making the Club premier.

from the general manager There are so many different ways to get involved in the Club, whether it’s serving on a committee, running the timer for the swim meet or participating in a CWC. As the holidays approach, we have a unique way a special person who has the jolly ho-ho spirit can get totally involved. We are in search of a new Santa Claus for the MAC’s Christmas events. Our longtime Claus, Mike Mount, has to take a step back this year, so we need someone to fill those very large shoes this season. It’s a unique position and is so rewarding. If you don’t have your own red suit, we can assist with that and the stuffing (if needed). The good news is that Mrs. Claus (Debbie Burke) will be back after many years and understands “the show,” so she can help this year’s Santa navigate the duties. If you’ve got a calling to participate in these fun events, there are two Downtown Clubhouse Breakfasts with Santa on from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 14 and 21 and one at the West Clubhouse the evening of Dec. 15. There are also Downtown and West events where President Cantwell and I will pass out holiday cheer checks to the staff that last about an hour from 3 to 4 p.m., with dates to be determined. You’ll also have a chance to get behind the scenes at the MAC and with our staff on a different level, along with
being a part of the merry memories of our members. If you have a jolly soul and a love for kids, this could be your thing. If you’re interested, please contact Katie Maurer at 314-539-4402. Ho, ho, ho! Speaking of Christmas, we have a great treat coming down the chimney for all of our members. Phase Two at the West Clubhouse will be complete and wonderful to start the new year. We are shooting for a Feb. 1 opening, if all goes according to plan. We appreciate everyone bearing with us during all the dust and construction, and we hope you’re enjoying the video updates we’ve been posting on social media. Through our extensive research over the years, we’ve come up with what we think will be a total package for our reopening, focused on total overall wellness of the whole person, where you have the opportunity to engage in nutritional aspects of living, physical aspects and spiritual aspects through classes like yoga in our awesome new spaces. The holidays are always busy and fun at the MAC. We have the Jack Buck Awards coming up on Dec. 5. What a special night that will be with Coach Craig Berube coming in here and accepting the Sports Personality of the Year as the leader of our world champion Blues! You can learn more

We’ve been all about the Blues here at the MAC, and on Oct. 14, we hosted the Stanley Cup Downtown and had hundreds of people smiling as they got pictures to the tune of “Gloria.” It was the Cup’s last stop before it went off to The White House, and we could not be more thankful to Chris Zimmerman and the entire Blues organization for our unique and special morning at the MAC. The MAC is special, so when people talk about competition in whatever form, we need to remember that we’ve been in competition and competing since 1903. At the end of the day, we just need to be the best MAC we can be and focus on why people join the Club. It’s about camaraderie, tradition, reputation, networking, business connections, athletics, family memories and the MAC being the MAC. It’s about you — our members — and the relationships formed. from the finance chairman We are very pleased to report that our 2019 fiscal year, which ended on Aug. 31, was the best in the Club’s history! This is the third year in a row that we have set a record with respect to cash flow generated. During 2017, we generated $1,960,000 of cash flow, in 2018 we generated $2,139,000, and in 2019 we generated $2,224,000. This has given us the resources to enhance the member experience in many impactful ways over that past three years. Improvements to the downtown athletics facilities include updating the weight room and replacing the weight room equipment, refinishing the basketball court, updating the pool and pool deck, creating a functional training room on 5M and remodeling the 11th floor group exercise room. Other downtown improvements include remodeling the secondfloor men’s restroom, updating the ladies’ restroom on 1M and upgrades to our security system. Improvements to the West Clubhouse fitness facilities include expanding the weight room and replacing the weight room equipment, adding restrooms and drinking fountains in the fitness department, creating an all-new yoga room, replacing the spin bikes and replacing the furniture in the squash area. Other improvements include remodeling the childcare facility, resurfacing the parking lot and refurbishing the porte-cochere. Looking ahead to 2020, Phase Two of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion has already
begun and promises to bring added value to our membership. One key driver of our success is that member headcount increased by 57. This is the third year in a row that the number of dues-paying members climbed. We are now 2,447 members strong and are quickly approaching our member cap of 2,500. Included in the 2,447 total are 1,416 Platinum Partner members. These Platinum Partners received a $100 reduction in dues every month. If you are not yet at the Platinum level, all you need to do is recruit a member and have that new member become your Platinum Partner. Then, both you and the new member receive a $100 reduction in monthly dues! Another important driver of our success has been the increase in our operating revenues, which topped $12,000,000 for the second year in a row. Our primary profitgenerating operating departments were overnight rooms and food and beverage. Our rooms department produced $682,000 of profit during the fiscal year 2019, which was another record, and our Downtown and West F&B departments together produced more than $404,000 of profit. You can help your Club continue to grow its operating revenues by referring business to the Club. If you are part of a board or club that meets regularly, consider holding these meetings at the MAC. And if your company or association is planning
their holiday parties, give our catering professionals a call. The MAC is an excellent venue for these types of gatherings. We made good use of the cash we generated during the year. We paid down the Club’s debt by nearly $350,000 and made capital expenditures of more than $1,200,000. We also improved our working capital position which enables us to operate comfortably without accessing our operating line of credit. During FY 2019, we accessed our line of credit only nine times during the entire fiscal year, a vast improvement over years past. As of the end of August, the Club had a long-term debt of $6,009,000 and MAC Redevelopment Corp., which owns our garage, had a longterm debt of $179,000, which will be paid off during FY 2020. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as our Club’s Finance Chairman again this year. I am thrilled that the Club is doing so well. Our positive performance is a result of solid planning that contemplates the future through our 10-year financial plan. We have a thriving club and three foundations that are developing and accomplishing great things. We can all look forward to another prosperous year!

BOGEY HILLS COUNTRY CLUB Joins MAC’s Reciprocal Golf Clubs
Missouri Athletic Club members now have access to Bogey Hills Country Club in St. Charles, MO as part of the Reciprocal Golf Program. Through this program, the MAC provides local golf options to members in a variety of ways. Through their collaboration, MAC members are provided with the following privileges at Bogey Hills Country Club: F Up to 10 rounds of golf per year F MAC members are allowed to bring up to 3 guests to fill a foursome, per round F Tee times available 48 hours in advance by calling the golf shop at 636-946-6250

MAC CHEFS ATTEND CHEFTOBERFEST On Sunday, Oct. 13, the Missouri Athletic Club’s Chef Barton Philipps, Executive Sous Chef Giuliano Zanti and Pastry Chef Katie Acker participated in Anheuser-Busch’s Cheftoberfest at the Anheuser-Busch Biergarten. Each year, more than a dozen chefs prepare their takes on German-inspired fare, while attendees enjoy the variety of beers from the brewery. As leaders in our community, our honorees have made a significant impact in many different ways, but mostly through their leadership in business/profession, civic engagement, philanthropic programs and mentorship. MAC Tank Pitch Competition Makes a Splash
The MAC hosted its first-ever MAC Tank pitch competition on Wednesday, Sept. 25, sponsored by Polsinelli. During the event, five entrepreneurial groups — App2Speak, HomeTraq, NextSteps,
PenPath and SpenDebt — battled it out to win the MAC Tank’s Best Investment. At the end of the night SpenDebt, a financial tech company that helps people pay off their debt, took home the title.
MAC Music Trivia Night Strikes the Right Chords
The MAC Downtown Clubhouse was rockin’ on Friday, Nov. 20 for MAC Music Trivia. During the night, attendees enjoyed wine and beer along with a silent auction and music trivia with categories

Berube Wins Sports Personality of the Year BLUES COACH TO BE HONORED AT 50TH JACK BUCK SPORTS AWARDS – DEC. 5 presented by
With a historic season and a golden anniversary to celebrate, the 2019 Jack Buck Sports Awards is shaping up to be a memorable night at the Club. Blues coach Craig Berube has been announced as the 2019 winner of the Missouri Athletic Club’s “Sports Personality of the Year” award. He will receive the award at the 50th Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet, presented by Maryville University, on Thursday, Dec. 5. Berube was named the interim head coach early in the 2018-19 season. In January of 2019, the Blues found themselves in last place. Under Berube, they finished the season strong, going 30-10-5 down the stretch highlighted by a franchise-record 11-game winning streak. They continued their strong play into the postseason, as Berube led the Blues to their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history. 16 F Cherry Diamond F NOV 2019
The Sports Personality of the Year, an award MAC member Jack Buck established in 1970 to annually honor the top St. Louis sports figure, is voted on by members of the MAC. Berube is the first Blues coach and eighth member of the organization to win the award, joining Mike Liut (1981), Brett Hull (1990), Curtis Joseph (1993), Brendan Shanahan (1995), Al MacInnis (1999), T.J. Oshie (2014) and Vladimir Tarasenko (2016). The MAC’s Jack Buck Sports Awards is regarded as the premier sports banquet in St. Louis and has honored some of the biggest names in sports history, including Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Brett Hull, Kurt Warner and Albert Pujols. This year’s banquet will be broadcast on KMOX Radio, and a one-hour recap show will air on FOX Sports Midwest. Make reservations through the MAC

WEST CLUBHOUSE FITNESS CENTER RENOVATION After kicking off construction on the latest phase of upgrades to the West Clubhouse in early September, construction crews have been hard at work taking out walls and preparing for the next stages of renovation. According to Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro, the Phase Two project will continue to be in the demolition phase in the coming weeks as they rework the floor plans for the fitness facilities. “They’ve cut holes in all the walls so getting steel in and out is much easier,” he said. “While we’re still in demo mode, they have to support areas with new steel structures.” While nothing has quite taken shape yet, Tuhro and his team are pleased with the progress so far, and he notes that they will be able to start build-back in the coming weeks. At the end of September, Tuhro and MAC general manager Wally
Smith traveled to Fort Worth, Texas to interview a company called Concierge Physical Therapists about their physical therapy services in the hopes of bringing them to the West Clubhouse. “They only work in private clubs, so they really get the relationship between members and employees,” Tuhro said. “We met and interviewed them and have heard nothing but rave reviews.” They plan to move forward with the company. Additionally, all of the equipment for the new functional training room has been ordered, and Tuhro and senior staff members have had meetings with designers to go over flooring types in each room. They’ve also had meetings with Walltopia, a company that is putting together a bid and proposal for the kid’s area of the upgrades.

HONOR V ETER A NS this Veterans Day
The annual Veterans Day Commemoration co-hosted by the MAC and the St. Louis Rotary Club will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Downtown Clubhouse. General Joseph L. Lengyel, Chief of the National Guard Bureau, will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker for the event, which honors all veterans and highlight three remarkable individuals for their exceptional service. GUEST OF HONOR AND KEYNOTE SPEAKER, GENERAL JOSEPH L. LENGYEL Chief of the National Guard Bureau, General Lengyel serves as a military adviser to the President, Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council. He also acts as the official channel of communication to the Governors and State Adjutants General regarding National Guard Business. Prior to this position, General Lengyel served as the Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau. He was an F-16 Instructor Pilot and Weapons Officer with tours in Air Combat Command, Pacific Air Forces, United States Air Forces in Europe and the Texas National Guard. He has received several major awards and decorations including a Bronze Star Medal, Defense Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters. VETERAN OF YEAR, CLARENCE CHERRY, RETIRED, 8TH AIR FORCE, 350TH SQUADRON, 100TH BOMB GROUP Nominated by Cheri McLaughlin, Clarence Cherry was a Waist-Gunner in a B-17 heavy bomb group in World War II. bombing high-value targets behind enemy lines. One mission, his plane was attacked by German fighters over Berlin and dropped into the North Sea. Cherry and his crew survived the rough, icy waters for 40 hours and were nearly taken prisoner. After returning home, Cherry became an Air Force instructor and an industrial radiographer. He continues to serve the military community by visiting veterans in nursing homes, handing out Christmas presents and being an active member of the American Legion. VETERAN OF ACHIEVEMENT, MEREDITH KNOPP Nominated by David Pokorny, Meredith Knopp’s post-military personal service and professional career have benefited the community and veterans. In addition to developing innovative ways to serve and support veterans during her time with The Mission Continues, her leadership skills earned her an appointment as one of nine (9) Commissioners who serve on the Missouri Veterans Commission (MVC) in December 2017. Meredith was named President and CEO for the St. Louis Area Foodbank in February 2018, where she lends a voice to the increasing number of Veterans struggling with food insecurity in the bi-state region.
MEL WITT LIFETIME DEDICATION AWARD, THOMAS WILLIAMS Nominated by John Noce, Thomas J. Williams, Sr. is a retired Chief Master Sergeant who wore the U.S. Air Force uniform for 50 years – 27 years on active duty and 23 years as an Air Force Junior ROTC Aerospace Science Instructor. He entered the Air Force in September 1963. During two tours in Vietnam, he served in the 14th Special Operations Wing as a Civic Actions Specialist where he was imbedded in local villages during the 1968 Tet Offensive. In 1990, continuing his lifetime role as mentor to all, he became an Air Force Aerospace Science Instructor in the St. Louis Public School System, until he retired in 2013. Chief Williams actively supports veterans and is currently Commander of American Legion, Fred. W. Stockham – Post 4.

Squash Like a Girl
The MAC celebrated Women’s Squash Week for the first time in late September with free introductory clinics, co-sponsored by the Women’s Initiative Group, the Associates Council and MAC Squash. These 45-minute clinics taught participants the basics of the game, allowing them to hone their skills. On Thursday, Sept. 26, the clinic was followed by an evening social where participants could mingle while enjoying drinks by the courts. Due to the success of their first event, a weekly ladies squash social will take place on Thursdays at the West Clubhouse at 6:30 p.m. Contact Squash Director Alex Ingham at aingham@mac-stl.org to get involved.

Junior Squash Hits the Road This Oct. 4-6, the junior squash players participated in the Louisville Junior Silver Squash tournament. The MAC’s longtime downtown water aerobics class, led by Rob Scheer, is getting a new name: Aqua Fit. Aqua Fit takes water aerobics to a new level, adding new exercises to change the class up for long-time attendees. Just because summer is over does not mean that fitness should take a backseat. The MAC offers private one-on-one personal training sessions in increments of 30, 45 and 60 minutes. They also offer small group training sessions for two, three or four people in 60-minute sessions so you can train with your spouse and friends. KICKBOXING SESSIONS
Come train with World Kickboxing Champion Dan Isaac for a customized kickboxing session. He offers both one-onone and small group training each for either 30- or 60-minute sessions. Kickboxing is $40 per 30-minute session and $55 per 60-minute session, or order three 30-minute sessions for $105 or three 60-minute sessions for $150. Join him for a class to train like a champion. With the growing popularity of CBD products, the marketplace has become saturated with options. Mislabeling and falsehoods are commonplace when picking a product off the shelf at your local CBD store. Because of this, consumers must be diligent when selecting their CBD. The first step is determining whether to use a topical or an ingestible. Topicals such as creams, lotions and salves are effective for pain relief, anti-inflammation and antispasmodic (muscle relaxant). Topicals work locally where applied and do not enter the bloodstream. Ingestibles such as oil tinctures, soft gels and gummies enter your bloodstream and work systematically to aid
in pain and inflammation response, immunesupport, sleep, stress and more. Topical and ingestible oil tinctures are offered in both MAC Pro Shops The second step is determining how to find a quality product. To do this, look for a certificate of analysis from a third-party lab or COA, which should include the cannabinoid profile, terpene profile and the presence of pesticide, heavy metals, microbes or residual solvents. The cannabinoid profile will show whether the product is a full, broad or narrow/isolate spectrum extract. Narrow or isolate extracts contain CBD alone and no terpenes. Full-spectrum extracts contain the full or nearly full suite of cannabinoids, including THC and terpenes. Broadspectrum extracts also contain multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, but typically exclude THC. Generally, full-spectrum and broadspectrum extracts are preferred due to what is called the “entourage effect.” The multitude of cannabinoids work together and
create a more effective product. The MAC has vetted a quality CBD supplier, Global Advanced Botanicals. Earlier this year, the MAC began carrying their salve and 1000mg Premium full-spectrum oil tincture in both Pro Shops. Their products are tested regularly by third-party labs and manufactured with 100 percent organic ingredients, on pharmaceutical-grade machinery. The salve and oil have been positively reviewed by several MAC members. Recently the MAC has stocked their 1000mg and 1500mg Elite full-spectrum oil tincture, which switches from a hemp seed oil base to MCT (coconut oil) and has a broader cannabinoid and terpene profile. This gives the tincture a less “grassy” flavor and is loaded with 36mg and 57mg of cannabinoids per serving. Nominated by Heather Winsby, Books for STL Kids is a completely volunteer-run organization that has distributed more than 122,000 books since 1998 to more than 85 existing literacy programs. They invite organizations that serve children from lowincome families to apply for a book grant with applications being reviewed one to two times per year. Funds are awarded as a book credit to be spent on the First Book Marketplace – an online bookstore with thousands of titles at deeply discounted prices. This unique way of distributing books allows the organization to choose the books that best fit the children they serve. These books are given directly to the children so they can take them home to start their very own library. “What’s not to love about books — especially when they are new!? The smell, the crack of the spine and turning those brand-new pages. If people can remember
the magic of their first new book, then they should try and imagine there are children in our community that have no books of their own at home,” said Winsby. The mission of Books for STL Kids is to provide the opportunity for all children in the St. Louis metro area to own and read their first new book. Their goal is to work with existing literacy programs to distribute new books to children who, for economic or other reasons, have little or no access to books. “This is where Books for STL Kids helps. We provide new books to children from low-income families. We work with existing organizations that serve low-income children - this way, we are reaching the hard to reach children. These organizations are already serving this population and know their needs best, which is why we let the organizations choose the books that best fit the children they serve.”
