LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT can’t believe it’s November already! The Missouri Athletic Club’s fall traditions are in full swing, starting with our Veterans Day Commemoration on Thursday, Nov. 11 and finishing the month with our Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Downtown Clubhouse on Thursday, Nov. 25. We are so fortunate to have two clubhouses that provides each of us with community, camaraderie and fellowship. I am grateful to be a part of this amazing Club and am thankful for the friendships I have made here. In October, the Board of Governors visited the Detroit Athletic Club for its annual retreat. The Board chose to visit Detroit Athletic Club to learn more about their recent branding initiative and capital improvement efforts. The Governors and I had an amazing experience and learned a lot. Below are some insights the Board and I wanted to share with you. SIMILARITIES BETWEEN CLUBS: F Reason for being: The Clubhouses have many similarities. Detroit Athletic Club was built in 1915, and the Missouri Athletic Club was built in 1916. Both buildings have comparable original architectural features. F External challenges: Like St. Louis, Detroit has faced economic decline; however, the DAC was able to remain relevant with its members and assisted in the city’s turn around. KEY INSIGHTS/LEARNINGS: F Culture is at the heart of everything you do! Create a culture of excellence and you will see excellence everywhere. F DAC’s goal: To make the DAC the most sought-after experience in Detroit. F External pressures drive change. You cannot control the pressures, but you need to adapt to survive. F As a member-based organization, your long- term goal should be to stay relevant with your members. Re-engage members and refresh products and offerings as necessary to build your financial stability. This will require you to follow trends as needed. F Lead with a vision that clearly articulates how you want to grow. F Create a playbook with key priorities, goals, objectives and a strategy. F Your strategy to achieve your vision should include a master facilities plan. F Your history is your brand and is your emotional connection to your current and future members. F Developing a brand strategy is extremely important. Make sure your brand strategy includes your promise, purpose, essence, mission, values and pillars. F Use debt as a key strategy to capital spending plan, invest only as much as you can afford and conserve cash when you can. F Committed to “creating a culture of excellence” and believes a 1 percent improvement each day leads to

“gold.” Keep focused on improving a little each day, and you will reach your vision. F Commit to your Clubhouses, keep the area around your building safe and clean. Don’t be afraid to partner with others around you to help with those efforts. The Board and I are excited to implement some of these key learnings in our own unique Missouri Athletic Club way. I’d like to thank the Board members who were able to attend the retreat, both in person and remotely, for their time and dedication to the MAC and for always thinking of our Members' best interests now and in the future. I’d also like to give the membership an update on our capital improvement projects. In my August article, I mentioned the board approved improvements to the West Clubhouse patio and dining room. Not unlike many of your businesses, the MAC is experiencing supply chain constraints which means we cannot give an exact date as to when these projects will begin. However, as soon as we have better visibility to the delivery of the supplies needed to begin the projects, we will communicate to the membership. Thank you for being patient with us as we work to improve our facilities and the Member experience..
MEMBER HIGHLIGHT: This month, I would like to highlight a Member that attended the October Board dinner, Don Nies. Mr. Nies started visiting the MAC by streetcar, with his father in 1937. On Feb. 14, 1948, Mr. Nies officially joined the MAC. For 30 years, Mr. Nies connected with his friends at the Downtown Clubhouse on Tuesday nights to play basketball, handball, squash or swim. After that, they all enjoyed cocktails and dinner as they played gin rummy until midnight. The Board and I truly enjoyed spending the evening with Mr. Nies as he told his favorite stories of the MAC. Mr. Nies, thank you for your dedication to the Missouri Athletic Club. The MAC is a better place because of you. This Thanksgiving, join us for a buffet at the Downtown Clubhouse from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25. Reservations are open now! Call 314-539-4470 or email downtownevents@mac-stl.org. LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER ast summer, we put out a survey to gauge how comfortable our Members were with using the Clubhouses during the early months of the pandemic. We had an enormous amount of comments from Members saying they weren’t comfortable coming to the Downtown Clubhouse, not because of COVID-19 – but because of their perception of safety and crime in the city. That really got our attention. Many people wanted to know what we were doing as a Club to bring positive change to the community, and we started talking about how we could increase our efforts and be more of a presence in the Downtown St. Louis region. St. Louis is a city that’s full of challenges right now, so in recent years, area leaders and stakeholders have come together to form task forces to focus on safety and civic engagement. Every Monday and Friday, I’m on a phone call with this group talking about working together with our police department to analyze what happened over the weekend and look at some solutions going forward. The MAC has been a part of the Downtown St. Louis community for 100-plus years, and we want to be engaged with the people in the city who can make a difference. We can be change agents and get our city back on track toward thriving and being someplace that’s safe and enjoyable for the next 100plus years. Our historic Downtown Clubhouse has been a cornerstone of the city’s urban core for more than a century where civic and professional leaders have gathered to build relationships and enjoy the MAC spirit of camaraderie Though we’re more than just an athletic facility, we’ve supported the community through athletics since competing in the 1904 Olympics and still pride ourselves on recognizing athletic achievement and giving back to the St. Louis community through the Sports Foundation and Charitable Society for Children. Our Membership is a generous group – something you all demonstrate throughout the year through your time and energy. As we move forward in these

efforts, we encourage Members to expand their civic identities by engaging in partnerships that lead to the growth, progress and success of St. Louis. If we take these smart, purposeful steps now, we can be a part of creating a better community for future generations. Each month from here, we’re going to be talking about the things we’re working on and accomplishing from a civic engagement standpoint. We’re going to discuss how we can effectively impact education and talent development, economic growth, social services and improved quality of life, and crime prevention and public safety – among other initiatives. Keep an eye on this column in the coming months to find out how you can be a part of this ongoing effort! After all, it’s our community, our Club and our futures we’re talking about. EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHT: This is the perfect time to highlight Kara Kelpe, the MAC’s new Membership Development Executive. She came on board after an exhaustive search for someone who could help us with civic engagement and get us more involved in the community from a Membership standpoint. Kara has been involved in our art foundation for years and is the smartest person in the room most of the time. She’s hit the ground running these past five months, and it seems like she’s been a part of the team forever. We’re fortunate to have her with us leading up this huge effort. The holiday season is fast approaching, which prompts us to reflect on the outstanding year of events and accomplishments that we have enjoyed. None of these events would have been possible without the diligent work throughout the year of our wonderful staff. Our hardworking staff is what keeps both Clubhouses running smoothly. Annually, the Employee Holiday Fund extends a holiday bonus to the MAC staff and supports the MAC’s charitable entities. The MAC’s employees are always incredibly thankful to the Club’s membership for this outpouring of appreciation. A portion of the funds are allocated to the foundations and the CSC and are used to carry on the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. INITIATION FEE INCREASE The Missouri Athletic Club will be officially raising the Initiation Fee following the January 2022 Board of Governors Meeting. Any incoming Members admitted to Membership following that meeting will be subject to the new Initiation Fee of $2,500 for full Resident and Jr. Resident Memberships. The fee for Associate Membership Initiation will raise to $1,250. Please let anyone who is interested in Membership know that this increase is coming and that there is no better time to join the MAC than right now.

HONOR VETERANS this Veterans Day Join the MAC and St. Louis Rotary Club for the annual Veterans Day commemoration. At this year's event and honor all those who have served our country, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. VETERAN OF THE YEAR, MAJOR GENERAL CASSIE STROM Major General (Ret) Cassie Strom, U.S. Air Force, has continued to volunteer her time and efforts in the veteran community since her retirement. This includes legal help for veterans, with a focus on women veteran issues based on her experience as a JAG. She has stayed actively involved in connecting veterans to each other, ensuring veterans are aware of the benefits and resources available to them, and educating the local citizenry of the contributions veterans have made in our community. Responsibility to give back to our communities has been her mantra through both her military and civilian careers. VETERAN OF ACHIEVEMENT, MATTHEW WILSON After graduation from Kirkwood High School, Matthew Wilson enlisted into the United States Marine Corp. He did a six-year tour finishing with reserve duty, starting as a radio and wireman and transferring to tactical air control. He also acquired the rank of Sergeant or an E4. In 2014, he developed the Lifewaters group, a non-for-profit 50(c)3 diving group designed to help veterans and first responders that have become disabled. This program works by helping the amputees go pain-free after diving, helping them realize they are capable of functioning in society without feeling inhibited by their injury. They create new friendships with others experiencing the same issues. Over the past years, merged with another 501(c)3 called Handicapable Fishing. He has been a Member of the Missouri Athletic Club for over 35 years, and the St. Louis Rotary Club 11 for 28 years.
LIFETIME DEDICATION AWARD, DUSTIN ROW Dustin Row is a dad, event producer, musician and combat veteran. He fought in Iraq in 2004, escorting fuel convoys all over central and western Iraq. His unit was involved in the worst attack on a supply convoy that either war had seen until this day. They lost two soldiers, one was taken POW and many more wounded. Five American civilian truck drivers also lost their lives. Upon returning home, he was blessed with an amazing family, a great job and a new house. Many of his fellow soldiers did not have the same to return home to. After losing a battle buddy to suicide, he started helping combat veterans. In 2013, he started the non-forprofit Songs4Soldiers. Annually, they hold a two-day music festival in Columbia, IL, featuring national touring artists. All of the proceeds go to helping combat veterans directly. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Zach Bodine CD: In a sentence or two, tell the MAC about yourself. ZB: I am the Director of the CRM practice at XTIVIA. We provide software consulting services to several businesses in the greater St. Louis, the state of Missouri and across the country. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful wife, Katie, and two daughters: Taylor and Parker. CD: What activities are you involved in at the Club? ZB: I enjoy utilizing the fitness center and spinning classes, as well as attending many of the fun events around the Club. My daughter, Taylor, was on the swim team this past summer, and we just signed her up for golf lessons for the fall. Our family loves utilizing the MAC West facilities, as they are very family- friendly. CD: What are your three favorite Club events and why? ZB: Father-Daughter is a lot of fun. That’s the first formal dance I attended with my daughter. My father-in-law, Mark, is a Member as well, so my wife attended with him. It was a family event, and we had a blast. I also attended the Hockley Night at the Downtown Clubhouse where they brought in all the STL NHL players who were drafted in the 2016 class. That was a great experience. CD: Tell us some of your favorite memories at the Club. ZB: I have hosted a couple of work parties at the West 1903 bar and patio. It’s a great venue and our team members really enjoyed it. The staff did a great job of making everyone feel accommodated. Also, watching Taylor graduate from her Puffin swim school was a ton of fun. CD: Why did you join the MAC? ZB: My family and I recently moved to Des Peres, and the MAC checked a lot of boxes for us. It has a gym, is very close to our home, and is family-friendly. In addition, It has been good for networking and hosting business events, and I often enjoy working out of the MAC West business suites. Also, my wife’s family are long-time Members as well, and they are fond of the Club. 12 F CHERRY DIAMOND
CD: Tell us about your career. MS: I began at Wells Fargo Advisors, running a CRM solution called Salesforce. I attended [Salesforce] conferences and was amazed at how innovative their product was. Then, I joined Enterprise Fleet Management and, later, a local healthcare company. That brought me to XTIVIA, where I recently celebrated my third anniversary. CD: Tell us about what do you do within the company. ZB: My predecessor, MAC Member, and all-around great guy, Sean Mohan, was retiring and was looking for someone to take over the ship. I was brought on board to manage XTIVIA’s Salesforce customers and grow our presence. In year one, our Salesforce customer base nearly doubled, and it has really taken over as the primary CRM our team supports. Once Mohan retired, I slid into his Director role, running the entire CRM practice. For those that don’t know, CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management. A CRM software solution provides a central place for businesses to store customer and prospect data, track customer interactions, and share this information internally with colleagues. It allows businesses to manage relationships with customers helping their business grow. CD: What are some of your favorite accomplishments at XTIVIA? ZB: I know it sounds cliché, but I really enjoy helping our clients achieve success. Purchasing a CRM solution can be a scary and costly endeavor, and customers need partners they can trust to guide them through the process, implementing the technology correctly, catering to their unique business requirements and providing them experience and guidance along the way. Our clients are rarely one-time projects. We take the time to understand their business, and they allow us to support them for many years beyond implementation is completed. That’s a testament to how much our customers trust us and value the service we provide. CD: What does your life outside of the Club and XTIVIA look like? ZB: I love playing outside with my kids and teaching my daughter, Taylor, how to play soccer. I enjoy playing golf with friends and family, taking advantage of the golf package MAC provides, playing at Glen Echo and Bogey Hills. I have spent time volunteering with Youth In Need. There are lots of great charities you can donate money to, but actually sitting down with the children and spending time with them is truly rewarding. CD: Is there anything else that you’d like to share with the Club? ZB: I recently attained my MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. This fall I am looking forward to joining WashU’s Elliot Society so I can help make a bigger impact in our community. F

Military History Club Celebrates 65 Years of Peace
In recent years the Military History Club has focused on significant anniversaries including the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Centenary of the Great War, the 75th anniversary of World War II and, currently, the 175th anniversary of the Mexican War and 70th anniversary of the Korean War. As the holiday season begins, the MHC directs their attention to another significant milestone, 65 years of United Nations peacekeeping missions. Initially proposed by Canada’s Secretary of State for External Affairs (later Prime Minister) Lester B. Pearson, Canada was instrumental in the first peacekeeping force in response to the 1956 Suez Crisis and has participated in dozens of U.S. peacekeeping missions to the present. This month, Dr. Andrew Burtch, post-1945 Historian of the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, will relate some of the key moments in the evolution, and eventual decline, of Canadian support for international peacekeeping operations. With an exciting season, the Jack Buck Sports Awards is shaping up to be a memorable night at the Club. Cardinals' first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has been voted by Members as the 2021 winner of the Missouri Athletic Club’s “Sports Personality of the Year” award. He will receive the award at the 52nd Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet, presented by Redbird Carriers, on Monday, Dec. 6. Goldschmidt joined the Cardinals in 2019 with a five-year contract. He’s a six-time All-Star and ranked third in the National League this season with 310 total bases. He batted .391 and scored 24 runs in September during the Cardinals’ 17-game winning streak, the longest in the National League since 1937. The Sports Personality of the Year, an award that MAC Member Jack Buck established in 1970 to annually honor the top St. Louis sports figure, is voted on by Members of the MAC. Goldschmidt is the 24th member of the organization to win the award, joining other legendary players such as Bob Gibson (1970), Lou Brock (1993), Ozzie Smith (1984), Albert Pujols (2002), Adam Wainwright (2009), Yadier Molina (2017) and many more. The MAC’s Jack Buck Sports Awards is regarded as the premier sports banquet in St. Louis and has a distinguished list of Hall of Famers, Olympic champions and coaching legends who have been honored. St. Louis Blues great, Gary Unger, will be in attendance to
receive the Bob Plager Legends Award. The banquet is not only enjoyed by a full house in the MAC’s spectacular ballroom, listeners throughout the Midwest and beyond tune into KMOX Radio to hear the program. Ainsley Heidbreder Swings for the Fences
Ainsley Heidbreder came to the Missouri Athletic Club in 2016. Under the tutelage of MAC tennis pros Trey (T.O.) Owens and Scott Stutz, she has honed her skills in the MAC junior program. Since that time, she has helped deliver three consecutive state high school team titles to John Burroughs. In the State individual competition, she placed first in doubles in her freshman year; second in singles in her junior year and second in doubles her senior year. Heidbreder's play and results earned her St. Louis Post Dispatch honors on their picks for AllMetro Girls Tennis teams all four years of high school. “Ainsley is also a very strong USTA competitor; working her way through the ranks, all the way up to seventh in the Missouri Valley Section,” said Owens. “Not only did she excel on the tennis court, she is also a rock star in the classroom as well. She graduated John Burroughs with a 4.38 GPA and led many of the after school clubs and organizations.” Heidbreder's dedication to the game and amazing work ethic made her a valuable asset to the Junior Tennis team. Her positive attitude and leadership skills have had an incredible impact on her peers and many of the younger players. This fall, she plans to attend college at Washington University in St. Louis. F

Missouri Squash Doubles Club Championships BY ALEX INGHAM, SQUASH PRO
B Final: Swoboda and Healy vs. Tlapek and Merenda Daniel Tlapek and James Merenda started their campaign for the double title. Both teams similar style of tough grinding play, whoever could chop it in short with conviction and pin the opposition deep would prove to be the difference. Roadrunners break away with an early lead, Merenda catching out Healey with low kills off wide crosscourts, and firing in a few early reverses, a few cagey errors from Healey/Swoboda racquet. Roadrunners win 15 to 11. The next couple of games were tight, lengthy rallies, which felt like this was playing into the Roadrunners hands. Swoboda/Healey tighten the screw. 1-1. The third game was nip-and-tuck. Healey and Swoboda convert a three-point cushion to reach gameball. Merenda/Tlapek save two, Swoboda swipes a forehand frame volley winner millimeters above the tin. to earn a crucial 2-1 lead. In game four, Healey started to attack, mixing short drops with high, wide crosscourts stretching out the court. This allowed Swoboda to get infront. The roadrunners still absorbing like a sponge, Healey/Swoboda's pace started to drop off, were they running out of puff?! The breakaway came, a quick succession of errors from Merenda/Tlapek, one final push, and Tlapek clips the tin. Not much to separate these teams, Healey/Swoboda won at the buiness end of the games, Congratulations to B champions Swoboda and Healey, 3:1! A Final: Parker/Dolan vs. Gaertner/Suggs During the first game, adrenaline coursing through the body, the ball is flying around like a pin ball machine. Gaertner is punishing anything mid-court short, chopping in the volley fade 9:4 up. Parker/Dolan not quite finding their marks. 15:10 for Gaertner/Suggs. The second game was point for point 9-9. Suggs catching out parker with some clutch volley drops of his own and the elastic man sweeping everything back 15:11. Suggs/Gaertner are ahead 2:0. Parker/Dolan need to break up the pattern of play. The fourth game was brutal, Gaertner nailing pace combined with the short fade, Parker working the ball to all the corners, Suggs sweeping up three-quarters of the court, Pat hammering the cross court wide to the door. The tactics were clear, it was tic for tac. Gaertner/Suggs earn a matchball 14:13! A huge rally, and an open side of the court on the Gaertner trademark forehand clips the post. It was the England vs Italy Euro PKs all over again. 14:14 gameball/matchball, a forced error from the Suggs racquet gives the punters a 5th! Suggs/Gaertner fight back to within arms length 10-11, the crowd are on the edge of their seats, Parker/Dolan find another gear, winning the next four points in a row on a classic Parker bakchand reverse to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and claim a marathon 3:2 victory. Brighter Shines at the MAC Shoeshines are available at the Downtown Clubhouse with Don Rushing Monday-Friday. Members can also drop off their shoes in the Athletic Department anytime during operating hours, and they will get shined the next day that shoeshine is open. Members who visit the West Clubhouse more often can get their shoes shined by Melvin Clark. They can drop their shoes off at the Pro Shop or West haircare to be shined. F

Winter Basketball LEAGUE
Join one of the MAC’s longest-standing traditions and register for a basketball league. Registration for the winter basketball league runs Nov. 19-Dec. 10. The open league plays on Monday and Tuesday nights, and the over-40 league plays on Wednesday nights. If the Club gets enough registrations, they may expand to include a Thursday night as well. Members may join both leagues if they so choose. Both leagues begin the week of Jan. 3. D U N N TO H E A D L I N E HERMANN BANQUET The USWNT Star and Former Award Winner Returns to MAC Nearly a decade ago, University of North Carolina soccer star Crystal Dunn received the Hermann Trophy at the Missouri Athletic Club. On Jan. 7, 2022, the standout on the U.S. Women’s National Team is returning to the MAC awards banquet as the featured speaker. The 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy winner is considered one of the best players in women’s soccer. In the ESPN FC ranking of top women’s soccer players, she is the second rated American and sixth ranked player in the world. Since 1986, the Missouri Athletic Club has annually presented the Hermann Trophy to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the country. Some of the biggest names in American soccer history like Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Claudio Reyna and Alexi Lalas have won the award prior to going on to international stardom. Find out who will be crowned soccer’s next rising stars at the MAC Hermann Trophy banquet on Jan. 7. The top three male and top three female finalists for the award will be invited to the MAC. A press conference announcing the winners will take place to kick off the event. Make reservations now through the MAC website. Wresting at the MAC Is a Hit The “Million Dollar Man” on the Money at Inaugural Event One of the Club’s most anticipated new events, which sold out in under 24 hours, did not disappoint. The inaugural Wrestling at the MAC, presented by Robbins Law Firm & Strategic Capitol Consulting, was an instant hit! Wrestling fans were treated to six exciting bouts featuring breathtaking action both inside and outside the ring. The crowd was buzzing in the ballroom throughout the evening, reacting enthusiastically to each body slam, pile driver and leap from the top rope. Several times, the grapplers even took the battle outside the ring and utilized a chair or two for the combat.

The event helped kick off the launch of the “Wrestling at the Chase” coffee table book by author Ed Wheatley. Each attendee received a copy of the book. The “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, one of the stars of Wrestling at the Chase, was on hand to help celebrate the occasion. He shared his recollections of his classic matches in St. Louis with King Kong Brody and Harley Race. Based on the strong response from Members, Wrestling at the MAC seems destined to be another popular annual event on the Club social calendar. F
Getting Crafty at the West Clubhouse
Late this September, Members gathered at the West Clubhouse for another Sip and Paint extravaganza presented by B Extraordinaire Gallery. This time, attendees were tasked with recreating Henri Matisse's masterpiece, The Goldfish, 1922. San Diego artist, Tomi Hayes instructed all 30 attendees with step-by-step instructions on how to create their own imitations of this classic piece. Each guest was treated to appetizers and a glass of house wine. F
