LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT s the heat of summer gives way to cooler autumn temperatures, there’s much to look forward to at the Missouri Athletic Club. October is packed with Club signature events like the Women of Distinction Luncheon, Oktoberfest, Classics and Cocktails and more. I am grateful for the fun activities the MAC has planned and excited to socialize with other MAC Members this fall. I can’t wait to enjoy a fire and a nice glass of wine on the West Clubhouse patio! This month, the MAC Women’s Initiative Group celebrates a decade of hosting the Women of Distinction Luncheon. Since 2011, the MAC has honored six local women each year, along with one Rising Star (someone 35 years of age or younger who is leading the next generation of professional women to new heights. Our Honorees have been revolutionary in business, civic engagement, philanthropic programs and mentorship. They have made a significant impact in many different ways, but mostly through demonstrating excellence, growth, grit and empathy. The 2021 group of women is truly spectacular. We can’t wait to recognize the achievements of Lisa Baron, Frances Levine, Leilani Carver-Madalon, Vanessa Okwuraiwe, Pam Price, Robin Ransom and Lindsey Herzog. These incredible women join the ranks of more than 50 other honorees over the past decade. The Oct. 1 event will also feature a panel discussion hosted by Technology Partners CEO Lisa Nichols, centered around this year’s theme of “be the change you wish to see in the world.” We’ll be joined by Khalia Collier, owner of St. Louis Surge and VP of community relations for St. Louis City SC; Kathy Mazzarella, chairman/president/CEO of Graybar; and Bhavani Amirthalingam, SVP and chief digital information officer for Ameren. Thank you to Jodi Peterson, the chair of Women’s Initiative Group, for leading the group in this effort and I hope all attendees will leave feeling inspired to be the change they wish to see in their communities! This month, the Board of Governors will visit the Detroit Athletic Club for its annual retreat. The Board chose to visit DAC to learn more about their recent branding initiative and capital improvement efforts. As I have mentioned before in previous articles, earlier this year, the MAC embarked on our own branding initiative with the goal to increase Member recruitment and current member engagement by defining an overarching brand strategy and cohesive marketing plan. Our plan is to take key learnings from DAC’s efforts and build into our plan. Special thanks to BIGWIDESKY, our consultants, who have been extremely helpful in our efforts to develop our strategy and Governor Mark McClanahan for his leadership of

the task force responsible for the initiative. Speaking of the Board of Governors, we have our ongoing Orientation to Club Governance event later this month at the West Clubhouse. F Hunter Brown, the Associates’ Vice President, is an attorney at Lewis Rice and has been a Member for four years. F Madeline Hantak, events coordinator at The Fox Theatre, is the social chair and has been a Member for two years. I am grateful to this fantastic group for organizing the Sept. 30 Concert and Cocktails at the Downtown Clubhouse. It was a big success, and I’m looking forward to the holiday party on Dec. 2! LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER e just finished up our fiscal year at the end of August and are a month into our new year. Last summer, we were just coming out of lockdowns and dealing with capacity requirements and restrictions when we were putting last year’s budget together. We were contemplating what was going to happen next and had to make a lot of assumptions: Membership levels, capacity at wedding receptions, catering business, Downtown St. Louis conventions, hotel occupancy, further lockdowns and more. As we finished up that budget, we didn’t know we were going to be the beneficiaries of the Employee Retention Credit under the CARES Act that had been amended in December 2020 to allow companies with 500 employees or fewer to be eligible. All of a sudden, we were eligible for some government aid. Now in retrospect, we were spot-on in our budget projections. We did better in our Membership numbers than anticipated, and a lot of folks who were on leave of absence or had left the Club rejoined! Our Members found the MAC to be a safe place where they could enjoy their time with their families and friends, and we were quickly back up to speed. The hotel business opened up slowly, but thanks to the weddings that moved from 2020 to 2021, we’ve had a record year in the number of weddings, driving both our catering and hotel business. With our budget projections coming to fruition and the government tax credit, our fiscal year ended up with the Club on strong financial footing. With a solid year behind us, the Planning Committee and Board of Governors are now comfortable moving forward with a couple capital projects that are Memberfacing and we think everyone is really going to enjoy! We have fully in motion right now a plan to put a somewhat climatized covering over the patio of the 1903 Bar to extend the months we can utilize that space. The second project at the West Clubhouse will be a remodel of the dining room to mirror the look and feel of the 1903 Bar area. Chef Charles and Darrin are working on some exciting new menu items, and our goal is to have the coolest restaurant in West County you can’t come to unless you’re a Member of the MAC or guest. Our Downtown Clubhouse folks have not been forgotten! We have initiated the project for a Jack Buck Grille renovation, which will be a complete redo of that space. The Grille is long overdue to have some attention in terms of furnishings, carpet and ventilation.

One other expensive but not as sexy of a project is improving the HVAC units at the West Clubhouse. It is not something Members see, but it’s a big expense to the Club. We will also have some minor, catchup projects that will be scattered throughout both Clubhouses. The timing is still being worked out on these projects, due to supply chain issues and getting equipment ordered. We’ll be able to tell you more on timelines as we learn more. We have a busy year coming up, and we expect business levels to be back at about a 90-percent rate of our 2019 levels, which was a record year for the Club. Although we’re not setting any records, we are building momentum and getting our business back on track. The MAC is back in motion! We’ll keep you posted on these projects as we go, and we’ll do this as efficiently as possible to minimize any inconvenience to Members. We look forward to seeing some renderings on these restaurant projects in the coming months. We’ll share those soon! EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHT: Our employee spotlight this month is Ashley Hancock, the MAC Director of Sponsorship. Many of you won’t see her anymore because she works from home on her own schedule. She initially started at the MAC as the Membership Director and was doing a great job! When she became a mom, she decided she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. We didn’t want to let her get away, though, so we brought her back as the Director of Sponsorship. She works independently, and the proof is in the pudding. We love our partnership with Mungenast St. Louis Acura, which came from her fine work. We have a number of employee positions to fill at the MAC, and we have to be creative with our people and our workforce. Ashley is the perfect example of us utilizing talent and being respectful of personal wishes. She’s a great mom and has always had the MAC’s best interests at heart! F See you at the Club!

Craft Beer Club Presents Cigar-B-Que On Friday, Sept. 10, the Craft Beer Club hosted the second annual Cigar-B-Que on the rooftop of the Downtown Clubhouse garage, bringing Members together in an environment that they could feel safe and secure while enjoying each other’s company. This event included a delicious BBQ meal consisting of creamy dill red potato salad, coleslaw, molasses bacon baked beans, corn on the cobb, pulled pork with St. Louis-style BBQ sauce, beer bratwurst, rolls and fresh-baked pies. On top of all the delicious food, attendees received complimentary cigars and craft beer. MAC is glad to continue this Member-favorite event. INITIATION FEE INCREASE The Missouri Athletic Club will be officially raising the Initiation Fee following the January 2022 Board of Governors Meeting. Any incoming Members admitted to Membership following that meeting will be subject to the new Initiation Fee of $2,500 for full Resident and Jr. Resident Memberships. The fee for Associate Membership Initiation will raise to $1,250. Please let anyone who is interested in Membership know that this increase is coming and that there is no better time to join the MAC than right now.

The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago and has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F All Members in the Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner should resign or go on a leave from the Club.
F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. A Hole-in-One for Foundations Foundations’ Month culminated in the annual Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament, presented by Mungenast St. Louis Acura, which occurred on Monday, Aug. 30, at Glen Echo Country Club. This event gave Members a chance to get together for a day of golf and camaraderie. The day began with registration starting at 10:30 a.m. Participants were given time to explore the club and other vendors and lunch before they were off to golf starting at noon. Although rain ended the tournament early, the storm could not dampen the MAC 10 F CHERRY DIAMOND
Members' camaraderie and generosity. After golf play was called, MAC Members regrouped at Glen Echo’s clubhouse for drinks, a delicious meal, a silent auction and, eventually, a live auction honoring past MAC president Kim Tucci. Congratulations to Duke Niedringhaus, whose name was drawn in the Mungenast St. Louis Acura MDX Raffle. Thank you to all of the participants who participated in this exciting event. With their help, the event raised around $90,000 for the MAC Preservation Foundation.
LETTER FROM THE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
ugust marked the end of fiscal year (FY) 2021 for the Club. Reflecting back to this time last year, I’m proud of the thoughtful and adaptable budget that came out of our planning process. Although it was a roller coaster of a year, we ended the year right where we expected it to be. Our year-end membership headcount was 2,352, up 98 from August 2020. Our membership team has been very successful in encouraging Members to return from leave of absence and attracting new Members to the Club. This momentum is continuing into the new fiscal year as well. Operating revenues for the year totaled $8.7 million compared to $8.6 million in FY 2020 and $12.2 million in FY 2019. Our overnight rooms business is beginning to bounce back as is our banquet business, and Member activity in our food and beverage outlets is back to 2019 levels. In total, August’s revenues were 95% of our August 2019 revenues. Operating cash flow for the year was $746,000, just $7,500 short of budget (this does not include the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC). Considering the uncertain circumstances we faced last summer as our budget was being developed, this is quite an accomplishment! Hats off to our staff who worked with limited resources to provide the premier service that our Members expect and deserve. And a big thank you to all our
A
Members for standing by the MAC and continuing to support and treasure her through this trying chapter in our long history. As of the end of August, the Club had long-term bank debt of $6,077,000 and MAC Redevelopment Corp., which owns our garage, had long-term debt of $773,000. Thanks to the ERTC we have not accessed our line of credit since December 2020. This has also allowed the Club to improve our working capital position and establish an operating reserve fund. This will help ensure that the Club has the wherewithal to withstand economic uncertainty going forward. The MAC has landed on its feet after a tumultuous year and a half. I credit our thorough, forward-looking planning process, the brainchild of our fearless leader, Wally Smith. His vision and leadership set us up for financial success while plotting a course for the future. Thank you, Wally, for your leadership through this challenging period! NOMINATE a CSC Charity Nominate a special charity to receive donations from the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children in 2022 by Friday, Oct. 29. Since its inception in 2005 to 2020, the CSC has donated more than $400,000 to 45 children’s charities from the St. Louis Area. For the 2022 year, three charities will be chosen by the MAC Board of Governors based on the recommendations of the CSC. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Oct. 29, at 5 p.m. To be eligible for nomination, the charity must be: F Local to the St. Louis metropolitan area (Missouri or Illinois) F Non-denominational F Family-oriented with emphasis on service to children F For human welfare (not animals) To be considered for a nomination, submit the following documentation by email to csc@mac-stl.org or snail mail to Missouri Athletic Club, Attn: Katie Maurer, 405 Washington Ave, St. Louis, MO 63102. The deadline for nominating a 2022 charity is Friday, Oct. 29. F A one-page fact sheet about the charity F A copy of the organization’s IRS letter of determination as a 501(c)3 F A copy of the organization’s most recent Form 990 that was submitted to the IRS (excluding schedules and attachments) F A completed budget showing how the CSC’s donation will be spent Without this documentation, a charity cannot be considered for nomination. Part of the vetting process includes accessing the St. Louis BBB website to review each charity's status. Each nominating MAC Member or MAC Employee must give a five-minute presentation on behalf of that charity to the CSC selection committee on Thursday, Nov. 11, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the MAC Charitable Society for Children meeting. Join the MAC's Ballroom Dance Club This Month MHC Book Club to Discuss "We Band of Angels" In October, PG Judith Hanses will lead the discussion on “We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of the American Women Trapped on Bataan” by Elizabeth M. Norman will be the speaker at the Military History Club's regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26. On the same day that the Japanese Imperial Navy launched its surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, it also struck American bases in the Far East, chief among them the Philippines. That raid led to the first major land battle for America in World War II and, in the end, to the largest defeat and surrender of American forces. Caught up in all of this were 99 Army and Navy nurses — the largest unit of American women ever sent into the middle of a battle. The "Angels of Bataan and Corregidor," as the newspapers called them, became the only group of American women captured and imprisoned by an enemy. And the story of their trials on a bloody battlefield, their desperate flight to avoid capture and their ultimate surrender, imprisonment, liberation and homecoming is a story of endurance, professionalism and raw pluck. Along the way, they helped build and staff hospitals in the middle of a malaria-infested jungle on the peninsula of Bataan. Then, short of supplies and medicine, they worked around the clock in the operating rooms and open-air wards, dealing with gaping wounds and gangrenous limbs, ministering to the wounded, the sick, the dying. Book Club Discusses "The Body" On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Ed Smith will lead the club in the discussion of a book that is relevant to all, "The Body: A Guide for Occupants" by Bill Bryson. Bill Bryson, bestselling author of "A Short History of Nearly Everything," presents a headto-toe tour of the marvel that is the human body. As addictive as it is comprehensive, this is Bryson at his very best, a must-read owner's manual for everybody. Bryson, once again, proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he describes the body—how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. he Junior Tennis Program at the MAC has had many changes over the summer. Possibly the biggest news is the announcement of the new Director of Junior Tennis, Conner Stevenson. Get
to know one of the MAC's newest employees and learn more about the Junior Tennis program today.

GETTING IN THE SWING OF THINGS Stevenson took on the Director of Junior Tennis position late this summer and is off to a great start. Coming from the Creve Coeur Racquet Club, he brings with him 10 years of coaching experience. Stevenson was certified by the Professional Tennis Registry as a freshman in college and played number two singles at Missouri Baptist University, won Who's Who of College Athletes and was All-Conference in doubles. His professional resume boasts 10 years of coaching experience in such places as Lake St. Louis, Chesterfield Athletic Club, Visitation Academy, the Lodge in Des Peres in addition to Creve Coeur Racquet Club. He heard about the position open at the MAC through his St. Louis contacts made from being in the St. Louis tennis community. "MAC was the only possible club I would have left my position at CCRC for. Having been in the area for 10 years, I knew it was the only place that treated their employees well, had a great program, great growth opportunities, and so much to offer their Members." In addition to his director duties, he runs the Monday Orange Ball and High Performance classes, Tuesday and Thursday Green Ball classes and Saturday Orange Ball classes. "I'm excited to be at the MAC for so many reasons. I am not only coming to a place that is operating so well and smoothly, but I'm also inheriting a Junior Program that is already prominent in the St. Louis area. However, the people are the true reason it's been so great thus far. Parents, kids, coaches, staff, bosses, that's what makes coming to work fun. And, man, has it been fun."
OTHER NEW FACES The other new face at the Club is Daniel Wolf, who now takes on the position of Youth and Adult Tennis Coordinator. Wolf, originally from St. Louis, earned a degree in Business Management with an emphasis in Professional Tennis Management from Methodist University. His internships during college took him to clubs in Colorado, Indiana and Vermont and, upon graduation, worked at Lake Geneva Tennis as a tennis pro as well as the Director of Pickleball. F
SHAPIRO REMAINS AT THE CLUB With Conner Stevenson joining the Club as the new Director of Junior Tennis, many Members were concerned this meant the former director would be leaving the Club. The MAC is happy to announce that this is not the case. Max Shapiro will be staying on as the Junior Team Tennis Coordinator. In this role, he will still be involved in clinics, lessons, running the team tennis program, and teaching cardio tennis. This includes USTA practices, Interclub, Elite Performance, Orange Ball and Junior Team Tennis. "I'm excited," said Shapiro. " I had a great experience directing the junior program for almost five years. I made a lot of great connections with kids and their families and hope to help Connor to continue to grow the program." F

Player Spotlight: Ali Javaheri, M.D. Although Javaheri has only been a Member of the MAC for five years, he has made a big impression on the tennis scene — recently winning the 3.5 40 and over St. Louis Championship and winning the 3.5 18 and over doubles championships with his partner Jake Sandweiss as well. In addition, Javaheri joins several other Members, including Carla Burkhart, Binu Matthew and Omar Malik, who
won the 18 and over mixed 7.0 league and have not lost since 2019. Off of the court, Javaheri is an accomplished cardiologist at Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital, husband to Ramona Behshad and father to Gian (4) and Rafa (1). Javaheri is grateful to his coach Scott Stutz, MAC tennis coach for helping him improve his game. F
JUNIOR TENNIS TEAM TAKES ON SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The MAC 18U Junior Team Tennis team traveled to Tulsa, OK, to participate in the JTT Sectional Championships. The team, consisting of Hadley Allaria, Ashley Behan, Paul Castleman, Ali Kennedy, Lucas VonAllmen, and Tate Wojciechowski, (and regular season team member Kennedy Silkebaken, who was unable to attend Sectionals) had won the St. Louis District Championships the previous week, earning the right to go up against teams from Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa. Coach Trey Owens made the trip to Tulsa to guide the team through the many rounds of boy's and girl's singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.
The team started the tournament with a close loss to a team from Oklahoma City but rebounded to win the rest of their matches in dominating fashion, finishing third overall. Off the court, the kids had a great time, going out to dinner together, playing games and swimming at the hotel. Since the oldest members of the team are only 15, this squad has a couple more summers to play together in the 18 and under division. All of them said they were excited to do it again next year, and perhaps this time move on to the Junior Team Tennis National Championships. F

Youth Programs Team
Liz Hamilton is the new Youth Programs Coordinator for the Club. For the last two years, Hamilton has worked in the Pro Shop at the West Clubhouse and helped with the Club’s Summer Sports Camp, holiday camps and specialty camps. She has an extensive history of working with children, recreationally and educationally. For many years, she worked as a Summer Camp Counselor, and later a Weekend Programs Staff Member, at Camp Ondessonk, a rustic sleep-away camp in the Shawnee National Forest. From 2010 to 2012, she was the Arts and Tutoring Coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club in Durango, Colorado. More recently, Hamilton has facilitated camps for the Art Center and YMCA in Edwardsville, IL. She has also taught as an art instructor for Summer Zone, a STEAM-based day camp offered by the Edwardsville School District. Finally, she was incredibly proud to be an instructor for Arts in the Park this past summer, a program the City of Edwardsville offers free to participants and specializes in large-scale and uniquely themed projects for all ages. Hamilton is excited about the future of the Club’s Youth Programs, especially with the opening of the Youth Classroom and the Youth Activity Room. She has plenty of new ideas and activities she plans to bring to the Club and cannot wait to get started! F

MACtivities is back for a new season! This is an exciting, free service offered by the Club to Members dining at the MAC. MACtivities will be held at the West Clubhouse every Friday night, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., running Oct. 1 through May 13. Participants, ages 5-13, will enjoy group games, sports and free play! All programs will be staffed by Camp MAC counselors. Every MACtivities will have an organized game or sport in the gym, crafts and coloring in the upstairs Youth Classroom and, weather permitting, outdoor games as well. MACtivities are open only to Members and guests dining at the Club. Register online by navigating to Youth Programs > Calendar. The Club offers Child Care for children younger than 5 years old. This year, Members can register for the Youth Activity Room, while MACtivities is in progress, for $7 an hour. The room will have three one-hour time slots available for reservation, 5:30-6:30 p.m., 6:30-7:30 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m. To participate in both MACtivities and the Youth Activity Room, Members need to make two separate reservations. Reservations will open on the website one week ahead of the scheduled MACtivities date. The Club looks forward to seeing everyone again this year! Shoeshines are available at the Downtown Clubhouse with Don Rushing MondayFriday. Members who visit the West Clubhouse more often can get their shoes shined by Melvin Clark. They can drop their shoes off at the Pro Shop or West haircare to be shined. F

MAC yoga instructor Megan Mahley has been taking the Downtown Clubhouse by storm! Join her Power Flow Yoga Class, which takes place on Mondays at 12:15 p.m. on the 11th floor. For a less intense class, Gentle Yoga, taking place on Wednesdays at 7 a.m. on the seventh floor, focuses on moving towards optimal balance and alignment. Her Full Body Flow class takes place on the 11th floor on Thursdays at 6:30 a.m. On nice days, Mahley will occasionally decide to host classes on the rooftop as well. Sizzling Swoosh The 2021 Summer Open Basketball League at the Downtown Clubhouse concluded on Monday, Aug. 18 with the championship game. This was the first league back since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March of 2020, and it turned out to be our largest Summer Basketball League in the past 20 years. There were a total of 61 players participate in the eight-team league. The winners of the Summer Open League were the team captained by Dennis Evans. They beat the team captained by Ben Albers 54-48 in the championship game. Team Evans found their groove in the playoffs going 3-0 on their way to the title. Luke Hornof (Team Schwartz) led the league in scoring with an average of 24.3 points per game (PPG). Greg Lindsay (Team Albers) finished second with 21.9 PPG, and LeAndre Johnson (Team Larson) finished third with 21.3 PPG. Fall leagues are already underway. Be sure to see which types of care would benefit prospective residents and select a facility based on their individual needs. Celebrating 50 Years at the Missouri athletic Club On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the MAC celebrated its 50-year Members from both 2020 and 2021 with a gathering in the Downtown Clubhouse Art Lounge. The Board of Governors joined these loyal MAC mainstays for a lovely cocktail reception followed by a delicious dinner by Executive Chef Bart Philipps. President Minges recognized Members who achieved these milestones at the Club, along with those who had passed, but made it to 50 years. F

WHISKEY BUSINESS Aged to Perfection
With nearly 120 years of history, the Members of the Missouri Athletic Club know the importance of celebrating legacy. The Wittenberg family has one such legacy. Past MAC President Charlie Wittenberg grew up with stories about his grandfather and great-grandfather’s Blue Wing Rye Whiskey Distillery, which was located in North St. Louis. He passed those stories on to his son, Bill. "Rye whiskey was something that I didn't try until I was about 50. The first time I tried it, was after finding the shot glass for Blue Wing Rye Whiskey." Nearly 10 years ago, Bill sought to revive the historic family business, noting an "insurgence of small-batch spirits and rye whiskey." "To me, it seemed like between the family history, the small-batch movement, the resurgence of rye and the fortuitous finding of memorabilia, it seemed like a good idea," said Bill. However, Bill had a full-time position running the company his father started, C. J. Thomas. (In fact, Charlie and his colleagues manifested the idea of the insurance agency in secret meetings at the MAC.) Bill's work at C. J. Thomas limited the time he could invest in reviving Blue Wing Rye Whiskey. Thankfully, Charlie had a family contact at Square One Brewery and Distillery who was able to assist with the recreation of the whiskey. After seven years, the first batch and put in 15-gallon Missouri charred white oak barrels to age for two years. According to Bill, these small barrels speed up the aging process significantly. Today, Members can find Blue Wing Rye Whiskey in a few local stores such as the Wine and Cheese Place, the Beer Sauce Shop and Parker's Table, but can also see it behind the bar in the Jack Buck Grille, Sportsman's Club and 1903 bar at the Club. " It’s a great story to tell, especially at the bar, that my family created this whiskey and my son brought it back," said Charlie. For those who are not familiar with him, Charlie was MAC President from 1990-1991 and an MAC Hall of Famer for being the leading scorer, team captain and Member of the MAC’s traveling basketball teams during the ‘70s and ‘80s. He was part of the Board who welcomed Jackie Joyner-Kersee as the first woman Member of the Club and had the "privilege" of introducing Jack Buck at the Sports Personality Awards in 1990. While not currently a Member, Bill enjoyed attending these sports banquets as well as the holiday brunches in the Missouri Room. MAC EMPLOYEE Holiday Fund The holiday season is fast approaching, which prompts us to reflect on the outstanding year of events and accomplishments that we have enjoyed. None of these events would have been possible without the diligent work throughout the year of our wonderful staff. We see them every day, or if we don’t see them, we see the effects of their work in the locker rooms, the kitchen, the basement laundry room and engineering offices. Our hardworking staff is what keeps both Clubhouses running smoothly. Annually, the Employee Holiday Fund extends a holiday bonus to the MAC staff and supports the MAC’s charitable entities. The MAC’s employees are always incredibly thankful to the Club’s membership for this outpouring of appreciation, and a small portion of the funds are allocated to the foundations and the CSC and used to carry on the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. On your Oct. 31, 2021, statement (both paper and digital), please notice a voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100 shown as “Empl Holiday/Foundations Cont.” The funds will be allocated as shown unless you notify the accounting office otherwise. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Matt Sheehan CD: In a sentence or two, tell the MAC about yourself. MS: I am the President and CEO of Spirtas Wrecking Company. Born and raised in South St. Louis, I am committed to the ongoing efforts to develop our city and surrounding communities. Spirtas maintains a strong presence here in St Louis to support that effort, as well as national interests in projects around the country. CD: What activities are you involved in at the Club? MS: Working out, golfing at the various MAC affiliate clubs and Mark Twain Society. CD: What are your three favorite Club events and why? MS: The Jack Buck Awards, an award to St. Louis bests and originated by Jack, a St. Louis legend. The Boxing Night, a unique opportunity to revisit how important boxing was and can be in St Louis again. And the College Basketball Awards Dinner, which reflects how important the MAC is in the national sports scene! CD: Tell us some of your favorite memories at the Club. MS: The Jack Buck Awards Dinner, where Jack, himself, was the emcee. He was a hilarious storyteller, that left the audience hanging on his every word. Also, any event that Bob Plager was there speaking….what an original character and proud, life-long Blues representative! CD: How long have you been a Member of the Club? MS: Three years. CD: Why did you join the MAC? MS: I have attended MAC events for years as a representative of our company and chairman, at the time. My brother was a Member for years and shared many great times at both Clubhouses with him and family. 30 F CHERRY DIAMOND
CD: Tell us a bit about the history of Spirtas and what Spirtas does? RT: Spirtas Wrecking began as a small scrap business in 1954 and has developed into a nationwide leader. Throughout the years, we have completed projects throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. These projects include the demolition of; industrial factories, bridges, stadiums and arenas, power plants, land development clearance, and many other commercial and industrial jobs. The week of Sept. 12 marked the 67th anniversary of Spirtas Wrecking and exemplifies our long-term commitment to safety and, leading our industry in responsible demolition. CD: How long have you been with Spirtas? RT: Twenty-four years CD: What makes you passionate about Spirtas? RT: The opportunity to be a part of developing the infrastructure of tomorrow, and working with the best team in the business! CD: Are there any Spirtas accomplishments that you are particularly proud of? RT: We imploded the Arena back in 1999 and have done several other marque implosions here in St. Louis and around the country. CD: Tell the Club about your life outside of the Club and Spirtas? RT: I am involved in real estate investments along with Spirtas. I enjoy golf, am an avid Cardinals and Blues fan and enjoy friends and family. My wife, Lori, and I have five kids and four grandkids. They are the energy in my life and each day I am blessed to be part of their lives! CD: Is there anything else that you’d like to share with the Club? MS: The Club offers everything and more that my family and I are were in search of. F

The candidates for the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year Award are set. The award, which MAC member Jack Buck established in 1970, annually honors the top local sports figure. The candidates for the 2021 Sports Personality of the Year are Nolan Arenado, Jordan Binnington, Paul Goldschmidt, Tyler O’Neill, Ryan O’Reilly and Brayden Schenn. The 2021 Sports Personality of the Year Award will be selected by MAC Members. Cast your votes on the MAC website (mac-stl.org) beginning Monday, Oct. 4. The award has been presented to some of the biggest names in sports history including Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Brett Hull, Albert Pujols, Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk. The Sports Personality of the Year along with a distinguished group of award honorees will be recognized at the 52nd Jack Buck Sports Awards presented by Redbird Carriers on Monday, Dec. 6.
