LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT t’s March, and spring is in the air. I am so glad I signed up for the MAC’s Commit to Fit program in January. With hard work and dedication, and a little help from Courtney Hutt, I have seen a big difference since I started the program. The program will end mid-March right in time for spring break! Special thanks to Courtney Hutt and Paul Helfrich for focusing on Member fitness. Thanks for all you do to keep our Members fit. Also, in March, the Missouri Athletic Club will host our annual Employee Service Awards dinner. This has become one of my favorite Board events of the year. It’s so fun to recognize our great employees and see them in a social setting. The MAC staff are valued team members that contribute to the Club’s greatness and serve our Members selflessly. This month, I’d like to ask each Member to thank a member of our staff for their service as an additional way to celebrate their achievements beyond the awards dinner. I am so proud to be a part of a Club that is full of so many amazing people. As I mentioned in my column last month, the combined efforts of our amazing Membership team and current Club Members brought in more than 400 new Members to the MAC in the past year. Again, a special thank you to the Members who were instrumental in bringing in each and every one of these new Members to our esteemed Club. Proposers, seconders and other influencers of these Members, please know, The Club appreciates your enthusiasm for new Members, as well as your assistance in helping them get acquainted with both Clubhouses and Club etiquette. I hope that each of you follows up with new Members you have brought into the Club after they’ve been initiated to show them how we do things at the MAC. As a reminder, all guests should be accompanied by Members when entering the Club. Make sure you check the MAC website if you have any questions on the dress and cell phone policy. Also, please be considerate of members and staff as you enjoy the Club amenities. Aside from rules, sponsors are encouraged to share all of the exciting opportunities the Club has to offer. We have so many exciting upcoming events that you can attend with a new Member like: F March 1 – Fat Tuesday MAC PAC Happy Hour Enjoy live entertainment, Cajun hors d’oeuvres and drinks with the MAC PAC Social Club F March 9 – Mark Twain Society Irish Whiskey

Tasting – Celebrate the season with a special Irish whiskey tasting and cigars F March 12 – St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Watch the MAC’s float as you celebrate St. Patty’s Day in St. Louis F March 16 - Ladies’ Lunch & Coffee Group – Catch up and get to know other women of the Club F March 24 – Italian Wine Dinner - Join the MAC Wine Society for a ‘Trip to Italy’ featuring five wines from the vineyards of Italy, paired with a four-course dinner After March, Members can also look forward to the Club’s Easter festivities or my, unabashedly admitted, favorite event, the Missouri Athletic Club Election. Although it is too late to run for the Board of Governors, there are still ways to get involved in Club leadership. We have five committees for Members to serve on beginning in June – these committees include the Membership Committee, Finance Committee, Governance Committee, Planning Committee and Audit Committee. If you have any interest in getting involved in these committees, please reach out to Gena Willis at gwillis@mac-stl.org to express your interest. MEMBER HIGHLIGHT: This month, I would like to highlight Past Governor Judith Hanses. Not only is she a past Governor but she is also involved in the Forever Young Club, the Women’s Initiative Group, the Wine Society, the Military History Club, the Charitable Society for Children and the Nominating Committee. This month, Past Governor Hanses will be busy working with the Looking Glass Corvette Club. The Corvette’s will lead the MAC St. Patrick’s Day Parade float, which the MAC has participated in for over 10 years. This is something she does for the MAC for other parades as well. Please join me in thanking the following Past Governor Hanses, my friend and mentor, for her selfless service to the MAC. The MAC is a better place, and I am a better person, because of you! Thank you for all you do. Have a wonderful March at the MAC. If you see me around the Club, make sure you stop me and introduce yourself. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this premier Club.

Angie Minges, President Missouri Athletic Club

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER | Leaving a Legacy

Using a Donor Advised Fund to Support The MAC Sports Foundation or The MAC Charitable Society for Children Using a Donor Advised Fund is a very easy and convenient way to distribute charitable contributions to your favorite charities. A Donor Advised Fund is a special account that you establish at a financial institution that is set up to receive charitable contributions. When you make a deposit to your Donor Advised Fund, you receive a charitable tax deduction in the year in which the deposit is made, but you are allowed to make the distribution to the charities in a later year. Deposits normally take the form of cash or securities, but other assets may also be used. You can decide how you would like your account balance to be invested until you make decisions regarding which charities you would like to distribute money to. When you want to make a distribution to a charity, you simply go onto the financial institution’s website, access your account and direct the financial institution to send a check to the charity of your choice. You will be asked to provide the address and tax identification number for the charity. If you already have a Donor Advised Fund established and would like to make a distribution, use the following information: Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation, 405 Washington Ave., St. Louis, Missouri 63102; tax identification number: 43-1587269.

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER or more than a century, the Missouri Athletic Club has been home to some of the biggest names in the St. Louis area, from its opening in 1903 when athletes and judges participated in the 1904 Olympics to sports legends Stan Musial and Jack Buck and many other remarkable people who are leaders in our community. To this day, the MAC continues its tradition of celebrating the accomplishments of exceptional people and hosting exceptional events. In just the last few months alone, we have hosted several outstanding figures at some of our favorite events. In early December, Members had the chance to see Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Ozzie Smith, Isaac Bruce, Garry Unger and David Backes at the Jack Buck Awards, which annually honors extraordinary individuals who have distinguished themselves and enhanced the St. Louis sports scene. Right on the heels of that, in January the Hermann Trophy Banquet saw the return of Women’s National Soccer Team Star Crystal Dunn, a former Hermann Trophy winner herself, as well as the prominent St. Louis soccer family and namesake for the award, the Hermann Family. The MAC Speaker Series brought former White House Sr. Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove to the Club last month. The inaugural event, which took place in August of 2021, gathered up-and-coming hockey stars from our area — Matthew Tkachuk, Clayton Keller, Logan Brown, Luke Kunin and Trent Frederic (brother to former MAC Governor Gene Frederic III). In addition, the Club has recently been honored to see the St. Louis mayor enjoying lunch and the Missouri governor at a wine dinner among many other prominent local and national figures. When you come to the Missouri Athletic Club, you never know who you will run into! The Club looks forward to hosting more exciting events soon featuring accomplished individuals including the USBWA College Basketball Awards, an event that previously featured future NBA stars Trae Young and Zion Williamson, and the next MAC Speaker Series featuring top CEO Bob Chapman. Our Members continue to do great things. Governors Swank and Albart, among several other Members were instrumental in getting the MAC Speaker Series up and running—a group of events

that are quickly becoming MAC favorites. In addition, Karlos Ramirez, former President of the St. Louis Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is currently serving on the membership committee. Through him, we became connected to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and we now also can count their new President, Edùardo Platon among our ranks. Our partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce introduced us to PCs for People and have donated seven carts full of IT equipment – all of which gets refurbished and recycled to benefit our underserved neighbors. We are looking to work with their community impact team to explore larger ways we can help lend support and get technology into more hands. These are among several of our Members who are branching out to help make this Club, and our community, a better place! Membership headcount is in great standing right now. With more Members joining and few leaving, we are getting closer to our aspirational goal of having 2,500 Members. As the Club comes closer to this cap, we want to encourage our Members to bring in others who share in our values of tradition, community and our culture of excellence! As you will notice on pages 10 and 11, the Club welcomed 93 new Members in January in addition to 28 in February. With all of these new faces in the Club, we encourage their sponsors to reach out to check in with their newly elected Members to ensure they are getting acclimated to Club life. By inviting them to an event, taking them to a Club within a Club meeting, joining them for a game on the courts or simply getting dinner, you can be a mentor to help them get the most out of their MAC experience. We are so excited to see what this new season of the MAC will bring, and I hope all of you will join me in welcoming these new Members to our exceptional establishment! See you at the Club!

MAC MEMBERSHIP

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Michael and Emily McCartney McCartney – March Spotlight Michael and Emily McCartney are a father-daughter duo continuing their family legacy at the Missouri Athletic Club. The McCartney Family are committed Members at the Club and have been for many years starting with Michael’s parents, Judy and John McCartney. Michael remembers watching his father participate in handball with his lifelong friends, many of whom are still Members. As a child, Michael was very active at the MAC, including coming down for the Saturday morning program, where he took judo lessons from Mr. Shin. Later in Michael’s adult life, Mr. Shin became a co-worker of Michael at Anheuser-Busch and now a friend. “We have developed a friendship that is intact today. He is truly an inspiration to me on discipline,” Michael said. Michael joined the Club in 2013 for the premier health and fitness facilities and to create lasting friendships with Members and clients. Members can find the McCartney family at both the Clubhouses dining, working out and attending events amongst other things. Michael enjoys working out at the Club and golfing at Glen Echo and the Legends. When he is traveling, Michael is also a regular user of the reciprocal club privileges. “The Club has allowed me to reconnect with old professional and personal friends, as well as make new ones. I used to work at Lewis Rice, and it is always fun to be downtown and run into other attorneys from Lewis Rice and other firms that I used to work with,” said Michael. Now, he is the President of McCartney Wealth Management and finds the Club a great professional resource. Michael’s interest in finance began when he attended Indiana University Bloomington for their four-year combined MBA and law program. Beginning in corporate law, he pivoted to the finance world and became a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) in 2008. In 2010, McCartney Wealth Management, an Independent RIA, was established. His law background has helped him tremendously with planning and portfolio implementation for clients. “At McCartney Wealth Management, we take an academic approach to both planning and investing and are a true fiduciary in that the only people that pay us are our clients,” Michael said. Inspired by her father and grandparents, Emily followed suit and joined the Club. “As a third-generation Member, I grew up coming to the Club with my grandparents, John and Judy McCartney,” said Emily. After work, Emily enjoys working out at the Downtown Clubhouse. She is sure to catch a meal at both locations with friends and clients. Outside of her leisurely activities, Emily is a very active Member. Currently, she sits on

12 F CHERRY DIAMOND

the Finance and Governance Committees. She also stays busy with the Associates Council, Women’s Initiative Group and the Women Business Owner Round Table. She previously sat on the Associates Council Board. Like her father, Emily also has an interest in finance, graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in finance. She started her career at Mastercard as a data analyst for their digital payments group. Michael, who was once Emily’s soccer coach, later turned into her professional mentor and boss when Emily decided to work alongside her father at McCartney Wealth Management. “Almost five years ago, I pivoted back to finance to work with my dad at McCartney Wealth Management as a Financial Advisor. While learning the ins and outs of the business and assisting in almost all areas, my day primarily focuses on helping clients with their financial planning and investment needs,” said Emily. With years of combined experience, both Michael and Emily understand the daunting process of finding a fiduciary financial planner. At McCartney Wealth Management, clients can expect to understand their true financial picture to make the right decisions to achieve their goals. The McCartney’s find it important to model out scenarios and take clients through a process to properly understand their financial situation and ease any concerns. Ultimately, they assist clients with their accumulated wealth and plan for major life decisions like retirement. “What makes our work so exciting is that life is always changing, but if you have a solid foundation in a plan, you can make adjustments and continue to ease that stress around accomplishing your financial and life goals,” said Emily. Outside of their professional partnership, Michael and Emily enjoy the assortment of events the Club hosts weekly. In addition to the lively Associates events she attends regularly, Emily’s favorite MAC event is the Women of Distinction Luncheon. The Election and Boxing Championship are a quick second due to the camaraderie and tradition that fill the room. Michael has been a fan of soccer for some time, so naturally, the Hermann Trophy Awards Banquet is always marked on his calendar. After years of being Members, the McCartney family makes it a goal to honor the history of the tradition of the Club. “There are so many amazing stories these walls and all the Members can tell, and I hope to continue the tradition of listening to and sharing those stories while also making new memories with the amazing people that make the MAC so great,” Emily proudly said. Emily has high hopes to continue contributing to the Club to make it the best it can be and to honor her grandparents’ commitment to the MAC. She recalls attending a meeting in the Hall of Fame Room Downtown and caught a glimpse of a familiar face hanging on the wall. Emily quickly realized that it was her grandfather, John McCartney, who was inducted into the hall of fame in 2009. It was a special moment for Emily knowing her grandfather has a watchful eye over her. As a proud father, Michael is honored to have his daughter carry on the McCartney legacy at the MAC. As for Michael, he feels complete knowing he has the MAC to continue his lifelong friendships in a comfortable environment. F

“It’s been a thrill to welcome to our Club collegiate players who have then gone on to the NBA or the WNBA.” - Aaron Pawlitz, MAC Basketball Chairman Building on the city’s well-deserved reputation as an excellent “sports town”—the Club’s Members have demonstrated their enthusiasm for honoring high achievement in sport time and time again. Today, the MAC is established as a destination for premier sports awards banquets. The Jack Buck Awards annually honors the top sports figures in St. Louis and the Hermann Trophy is presented at the Club to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the country. In 2018, the MAC added another prestigious event to its impressive lineup of sports banquets. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association invited the Club to host the USBWA’s end-of-season Awards Banquet, and the MAC enthusiastically accepted that invitation. Early efforts were fortified by an exceptional group of Member sponsors, who were eager to build on the Club’s reputation as an exceptional host for athletics awards ceremonies.

“The Awards Banquet planning committee’s goal is that attending Members and their guests will enjoy an exceptional, one-of-a-kind experience and that the award winners will receive an unparalleled experience while visiting our Club,” said Aaron Pawlitz, MAC Basketball Chairman. “Our goal is that the in-person Awards Banquet experience is the best experience — when compared to all the other post-season college basketball award presentations—for both the award winners and the attendees. We know that our Members and our staff will make those award winners and the family, friends and coaches who join them feel as if the Awards Banquet is a fitting end to an exceptional season!” In just the first two years of hosting the event, the MAC has welcomed some of the biggest names in college basketball including Trae Young, Zion Williamson, Tony Bennett and Rick Barnes. “It’s been a thrill to welcome to our Club collegiate players who have then gone on to the NBA or the WNBA,” said Pawlitz. “And, our Members have enjoyed the unique experience of hearing, in-person, the insights, life lessons, and other remarks delivered by the coach-of-the-year award winners.” On April 11, following a two-year pause due to COVID, the MAC looks forward to once again hosting an event that is destined to become one of the most popular events on the social calendar. This year’s lineup of honorees is growing to include the best from women’s college basketball. In addition to the female player of the year award which was added in 2019, thio 2022 banquet will also feature the female freshman of the year and the coach of the year in women’s basketball. “I enthusiastically encourage every Member to consider attending the Awards Banquet,” Pawlitz said. “If you do, you might get a chance to greet a coach whose team just competed in the Elite Eight or a shooter who just hit a clutch three in the Final Four or a towering center who had been the focus of media attention since the beginning of the season. Come join us at the Awards Banquet, and be a part of the Club’s legacy of honoring excellence in sports!” F

SQUASH WINTER CLASSIC RESULTS by Alex Ingham FINAL RECAP Grewe/Montgomery (+1) beat Healey/Conners (+7) 3 to 2, 5 to 15, 15 to 12, 15 to 13, 6 to 15 and 15 to 10 Game One: Healey/Conners were off to a flyer, jumping on the ball, Healey emulating Tarek Momen’s trademark soft counter drops, and Conner’s forehand kill inch-perfect above the tin, go 1-0 up in five minutes. Game Two: Healey/Conners pull away 9 t0 2, Grewe/ Montgomery grind their way back in stepping up, Grewe using his Chris Everett esque backhand volley to great affect, level up 12 to 12 and win a crucial second 15 to 12. Game Three: Montgomery/Grewe started to find more position and range, scoring big runs of points, nullifying the tricky Conners/Healey speed and counter attacks. Montgomery’s Gael Monfils slides equally covering ground, and forehand overhead slam pull them up 2 to 1. Game Four: You can’t afford to come off the gas with a Calcutta handicap, a string of errors from team Grewe/ Montgomery proving costly, Healey/Conners take full advantage and shut it down quick 15 to 6, and we were into a deciding fifth game!

Pickleball League The pickleball league is almost full for the first session. The session will be held on Monday nights beginning Jan. 31 and will run for 10-weeks. The league will be all doubles play and points will accrue over the season. Players can expect a new season this summer. For more information, contact Conner Stevenson at cstevenson@mac-stl.org.

Saturday Pickleball Bash The Saturday pickleball bashes have had a lively group of players with a range of player levels. The players meet on the second and last Saturday of each month. For those who are interested, the upcoming dates are March 12 and 26, April 9 and 30 and May 7 and 28. For more information, Contact David Fuhrig at dfuhrig@mac-stl.org.

Game Five: Grewe/ Montgomery start 6 to 0 down on handicap, they’re grouped and won crucial consecutive runs of points, frustrating their opponents, not giving Healey/Conners much to play with. Healey/Conners pulled a couple back to level 10 to 10. Montgomery/Grewe started to pin the ball higher and deeper into the back corner, found their marks to pull through 15 to 10 in a very tight match! A big week of squash concludes, a lot of hard-fought brutal five-setters. Congratulations to our new champions Andrew Montgomery and Gary Grewe! Next up is the Club Championships. F

TENNIS TIP by Daniel Wolf My tennis tip is directed at players of all ages! There are many studies that link other activities to tennis. Even video games can be viewed as a tool to keep a player’s eye-hand coordination sharp. Tennis is a very tedious game, as many people know. Players can improve their mental and physical game just by 30 minutes a night. I recommend breaking out that Xbox/PlayStation/Nintendo or even computer and testing your luck on any fast-paced game! Racing, sports or action is what I recommend for best results. F

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PARTNERS AT LEARN ABOUT DIZZINESS AND BALANCE DISORDERS Almost 35 percent of adults over the age of 40 have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction, an impairment to the inner-ear balance system which can lead to dizziness, balance issues and vertigo.* The vestibular system includes parts of the inner ear and brain that process sensory information and helps control balance and eye movement. If you feel dizzy or off balance, these systems may not be working together properly. Vestibular dysfunction can result from an injury, illness, infection, aging or environmental factors. SSM Health Physical Therapy has physical therapists who are expertly trained to treat vestibular disorders that may cause: F Dizziness F Gait impairments F Headaches F Hearing deficits F Imbalance F Lack of concentration or thought processes F Memory loss F Nausea related to motion sickness F Sensitivity to light and/or noise F Spatial disorientation F Ringing in the ears F Vision disturbances * Agrawal Y, Carey JP, Della Santina CC, Schubert MC, Minor LB. We offer individually tailored treatment that includes exercises to improve balance and stability, gait and positioning, along with education and compensatory strategies. In addition, a home exercise program may be provided to reinforce the gains you make. Next Steps Schedule a visit with the MAC’s resident SSM physical therapist, Jay Zaber. Please call 314-822-3205 or stop by the clinic for assistance scheduling. The clinic can be found in the West JAY ZABER Clubhouse near the Youth Activity Room. Discover Your Resting Metabolic Rate The Missouri Athletic Club offers resting metabolic testing to Members at the West Clubhouse. This quick test provides the number of calories that a person’s body burns at rest through a metabreather. Typically, the test is completed in the morning when the person is in a fasted state with no caffeine. Testing can be completed in the afternoon if a four-hour fast has been completed and caffeine has not been consumed. Members can be tested to better plan for weight loss, weight gain and eating to enhance athletic performance. “I met with Paul about nutrition and he suggested a resting metabolic test. This 10–15-minute test will tell us how many calories my body burns in a day at rest. He mentioned that we can make caloric changes from the data we get that will guarantee weight loss. He can even figure out how quickly I can meet certain weight loss goals based on how many calories we restrict from my diet. This reduction in calories alongside my daily exercise burn, I will always be in a caloric deficit to help me achieve results. I highly recommend this test!” - Nancy Tully

Second Annual Cornhole Tournament A Treasured Piece in the Downtown Clubhouse Tucked away in a first-floor office of the Downtown Clubhouse hangs one of my favorite paintings in the Club’s Art Collection. It is not the subject matter that captured my attention, but rather, the bold, richly colored and almost jarring composition that I can’t take my eyes off of. It features a decorative scene of figures, objects and patterns, in a flattened space and piled upon one another as if the canvas is almost tilting forward ready to spill over the confines of the handcarved gilt frame. “The Art Students Bazaar” by Fred Green Carpenter reflects the artist’s most recognizable and highly decorative style. In 1900, Carpenter entered Washington University’s School of Fine Arts before following his teacher, artist Richard E. Miller, to study in Paris. In 1914, he returned to St. Louis, married Mildred Bailey and joined the faculty at his alma mater, where he remained until 1952. An active, awardwinning exhibitor, Carpenter was commissioned in 1921 to paint two lunettes for the Missouri State Capitol building, the same year he painted The Art Students Bazaar. After Carpenter’s death in 1965, one student wrote, “He was known for being a marvelous colorist. Today, I still see his influence on his student’s students. His color had a jewel-like quality. He thought every inch of a painting should be fascinating . . . and a painting should be as interesting close up as from a distance.” (from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 16 April 1967). No wonder I can’t stop looking. F Kara Kelpe Membership Development Executive

On Saturday, Jan. 29, the Mark Twain Society and Sports Foundation hosted their second annual Cornhole Tournament, sponsored by Strait Realty, to help raise funds to benefit the Sports Foundation. Teams of two competed (with at least one MAC Member per team) against each other, while other attendees were treated to food stations, drinks, cigars and a raffle. They also broadcasted college basketball games on the big screens in the Missouri Room. In addition, MTS donated a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 10 Year to raise funds for the foundation. The raffle winner was Governor Justin Fowler! At the end of the day, Brian Rodgers and his tournament partner Michael Wolfe took home the winning title of the second annual MAC Cornhole Tournament! for MAC Charities Due to unusual circumstances continuing from last year, charities are still recovering from the pandemic. However, the MAC’s Members rallied around our 2021 charities, coming through with enough to donate a little over $12,500 to each of our three charities: Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Inc., Caring for Kids, Inc. and Sweet Babies. This year, the Charitable Society for Children co-chair Jarid King and co-chair Nat Walsh presented the checks to these charities at the CSC Check Presentation on Saturday, Jan. 22. “Traditionally, the annual Check Presentation is the highlight of the year for the CSC. This year was no different,” said Walsh. The charities’ proposers were also invited to attend the presentation due to their help in connecting the Club with each of these special charities. King and Walsh presented the 2022 charities: Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Caring for Kids, and Sweet Babies. The event truly highlighted the “giving nature of the MAC Members and staff,” said Walsh.

THE CHALLENGE

How do we take one of the world’s largest providers of pork and unfragment their data to increase the quality and extend the life of livestock. For every 1% of mortality, there was millions of dollars in loss to the family of farmers. They were data rich, but information poor, unable to synthesize the information into insights they could use.

THE SOLUTION

From delivery to food supply – we pulled in millions of data points from the complexities of DNA to lower mortality rates across one of the largest swine operators in the world. We made a system that was easy to use and easy for farmers to see a tangible increase in animal health and as a result, millions of additional Americans were able to be fed.

THE RESULTS

HAPPY

The system we established ultimately launched a separate company that was purchased by a global farming organization – all possible because of the partnership that Acuity and csg established nearly a decade ago.
