During our August meeting, the Board of Governors unanimously approved the Club’s budget for FY 2023 (Sept. 1, 2022-Aug. 31, 2023). Preparing a budget during an inflationary period, the likes of which we have not encountered in the United States for 40 years, was extremely challenging. As you are undoubtedly witnessing in your own families and businesses, the cost of seemingly everything is increasing significantly and precipitously. By way of example, hourly wage rates at the Club have increased by 30% in the past three years. Over the previous year, health insurance premiums for the Club’s staff have increased by 26%, and the Club’s property and casualty insurance premiums have increased by over 20%. In addition, we are experiencing 8%-9% inflation in food costs and other consumables. The bottom line—it now costs more to operate the MAC and provide an outstanding Member experience.

Looking ahead to September, the Monthly Membership Mixer on Sept. 8 at the Downtown Clubhouse presents an excellent opportunity to mingle with other Members and introduce prospective members to our Club. The Cigar-BQue, sponsored by the Mark Twain Society, offers a unique dining, libation and cigar experience on the rooftop of the Downtown Clubhouse garage on Sept. 9. Finally, as was highlighted on the cover of the Aug. edition of the Cherry Diamond, on Thursday, Sept. 15, MAC Wrestling Night returns to the Missouri Room. As of the writing of this letter, limited sponsorship opportunities remain available. Finally, I would like to recognize a recipient of the distinguished employee award. This individual works diligently behind the scenes at the Downtown Clubhouse to serve our Members.

Thank you for going above and beyond, Liz! Your creativity in the kitchen and dedication to providing topnotch service elevates Club life for our Members and does not go Members, unnoticed.Ilook forward to seeing you at the Club this autumn!

Liz Behlman Title: Assistant Pastry Chef Start Date: 1/30/2020 What you hope to be doing in ten years: “Running my own pastry kitchen!”

Brent Beumer, President Missouri Athletic Club s summer comes to an end at the Missouri Athletic Club, so does the Club’s 2022 fiscal year (FY). I believe that being good stewards of our Club’s financial resources is the primary responsibility of our senior staff and the Board of Governors. With that in mind, I am pleased to report that our Club is financially sound.

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

To help offset these rising costs, the Board of Governors approved a 6.5% dues increase that will be effective as of Sept. 1, and reflected in your Aug. 31 statement. The average increase across all Membership categories is less than $14 per month. The dues increase will allow the Club to continue to fulfill our stated mission of creating extraordinary experiences in all aspects of Club life. Furthermore, even though we are experiencing significant inflation, the Club and the Board of Governors are committed to continuing to enhance our facilities at both Clubhouses by funding capital improvements through operating cash flow. The recently completed improvements to the Jack Buck Grille downtown and the soon-to-be-completed renovation of the 1903 Dining Room at the West Clubhouse reflect this commitment. In FY 2023, we will continue to make prudent investments in ourAsfacilities.afinal note on the FY 2023 budget, I would be remiss if I did not thank our Treasurer, Governor Steve Albart, the Finance Committee, General Manager Wally Smith, CFO Pam Roth and her entire accounting department for all the work that went into preparing the FY 2023 budget. A job very well done! Now, onto some more fun MAC news. At the end of August, the Club wrapped up “Foundations’ Month” with the annual Foundation Golf Tournament. The event was a sellout and an enormous success. Thank you to Past President Bugh and Past President Eggerding for once again taking the lead on organizing the tournament and to Katie Mauer and her team for coordinating all the logistics. This year, a portion of the proceeds from the tournament were directed to the MAC Sports Foundation. In turn, the MAC Sports Foundation has pledged $50,000 towards a gymnasium flooring renovation project at the Youth and Family Center (YFC), located very near the Downtown Clubhouse at the corner of Cass Avenue and Ninth Street. By way of background, the YFC is a neighborhood recreational and family center operated under the umbrella of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. In response to the MAC’s desire to be more civic-minded and engaged in positively impacting our downtown neighborhood, the Urban League introduced the MAC to the YFC because of the similarities in each organization’s mission to reach generations of families through athletic programs and lifeenriching experiences. Stayed tuned in the coming weeks and months for additional details about this very exciting project.

USING A DONOR ADVISED FUND TO SUPPORT THE MAC SPORTS FOUNDATION OR THE MAC CHARITABLE SOCIETY FOR CHILDREN

Leaving a Legacy

Using a Donor Advised Fund is a very easy and convenient way to distribute charitable contributions to your favorite charities. A Donor Advised Fund is a special account that you establish at a financial institution that is set up to receive charitable contributions. When you make a deposit to your Donor Advised Fund, you receive a charitable tax deduction in the year in which the deposit is made, but you are allowed to make the distribution to the charities in a later year. Deposits normally take the form of cash or securities, but other assets may also be used. You can decide how you would like your account balance to be invested until you make decisions regarding which charities you would like to distribute money to. When you want to make a distribution to a charity, you simply go onto the financial institution’s website, access your account and direct the financial institution to send a check to the charity of your choice. You will be asked to provide the address and tax identification number for the charity. If you already have a Donor Advised Fund established and would like to make a distribution, use the following information: MAC Sports Foundation, 405 Washington Ave., St. Louis, Missouri 63102; tax identification number: 43-1587269.

I reflect on the last few months, I want to thank our Members and staff for another successful swim season. Whether Members wanted to wind down from a busy week or as children took their first swim lessons, the West Clubhouse pool was the place to be. While many families are already into their fall school schedule, I want to encourage Members to consider Missouri Athletic Club Youth Programs and the many benefits they can offer both kids and their parents.

A whose dedicated work continues to ensure the success of our exceptional Club. Although we have a talented group at the MAC, we are still in need of top-notch employees to bridge the gap. Members, I encourage you to be on the lookout for individuals looking for a career change or who are seeking a fulfilling job with significant support from a diligent team. The MAC offers employees a long list of competitive benefits, often surpassing those of larger companies. At the Club, current staff and Members provide new employees with the support and encouragement that other companies tend to lack. The MAC is a unique employer, and the prolonged tenure of many staff members speaks volumes to this point. Many employees have worked at the MAC full-time for 10, 20 and even 30+ years. From office positions to restaurant waitstaff, the MAC offers an assortment of rewarding job opportunities for qualified candidates looking to join the Inteam.other news, I am thrilled to announce that the Jack Buck Grille furniture has arrived! I encourage all Members to take a trip to the Downtown Clubhouse to see and enjoy the renewed JBG in all its glory. We are proud that the JBG now reflects the elegance, tradition and rich history of the Club. With the 1903 Bar also nearing the end of renovations, the MAC will soon be the place to rediscover many of the best meals and drinks that the St. Louis area has to offer. As we move into autumn and into the next fiscal year, I am grateful for our wonderful Members who have ensured the Club’s success in wake of the pandemic.

s

The MAC has a variety of youth programs and activities to engage some of our youngest Members. I want to draw attention to the new “MACamp,” held on Friday nights from 5:30-8:30 p.m. this fall. This camp is ideal for Members looking to enjoy an occasional date night while MAC children have an equally fun evening to look forward to. After enjoying a variety of sports, games, projects and more, your kids will be exhausted from all the excitement of Friday night MACamp.

While we often prioritize our children and work, it’s also important to take time for yourself! The pandemic has reiterated the value of our self-care. Luckily, both of our Clubhouses offer an extensive list of options for Members looking to focus on their fitness, health and overall well-being. We have a variety of experienced personal trainers who are eager to take on new clients at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses. After a tough, yet rewarding workout, Members can schedule a massage to relieve tight muscles. If you are recovering from an injury, look no further than Jay Zaber with SSM Health. Jay has assisted many Members throughout their road to recovery with his considerable experience and extensive background in physical therapy. As we all know, nutrition plays a major role in a person’s health. Members wanting to learn more about opportunities with nutrition counseling can schedule an appointment with Melissa Swank. For all things health-related, visit the “Fitness & Wellness” tab on the MAC website. As kids return to school and we fall into our usual rhythm, make sure you take time to prioritize your health and find your own ways to enjoy everything the fall season has to offer. As President Beumer mentioned, the end of August marked the end of our fiscal year, and we are thrilled that the Club is in a financially sound position. However, I want to remind all Members that the MAC continues to experience a significant staffing shortage. I am extremely grateful for our current list of employees

An important contributor to our Club’s success is our dedication to maintaining high standards throughout both Clubhouses. The Board of Governors has recently approved a revised edition of the MAC Dress Code and Policies, which I invite you to review on our website. I thank you for participating in our efforts to improve, uphold and maintain the MAC’s reputation as the foremost private club in our region. Our Members’ collective dedication to excellence allows us to further enhance the honor and prestige of our beloved MAC! See you at the Club!

3. SERVE AND VOLLEY. Although the classic serve and volley game has been phased out by heavy ground strokes with lots of topspin, the serve and volley are still very effective when done strategically. Try using it as a sneak attack when your opponent is not expecting it. Suggestion: Try serving out wide and moving forward immediately to volley to the open side of the court.

20 F CHERRY DIAMOND MAC ATHLETICS

Early preparation is always a must on the tennis court, but just prior to contact and through contact, extend the hitting arm toward your target with an exaggerated length for a much longer followthrough around or over the opposite shoulder. This will result in the racquet face staying behind the ball a bit longer and giving you a bigger opportunity to ensure “cleaner contact.”

The Missouri Athletic Club junior tennis team won the St. Louis JTT 18U Intermediate Sectional Qualifier Tournament, earning the team a spot in the Sectional Tournament to Edmond, Okla. The team traveled to Edmond and competed against six other teams from the Missouri Valley (five-state) in the Sectional Tournament.MACjunior tennis defeated a team from Omaha, Neb., and Edwardsville, Ill., and won the pool play. The team then lost a very close match to Tucker Academy of Tulsa, Okla. in the finals. The kids left it all on the court while battling 100-degree heat both days. Paul Castleman was noted for sportsmanship by Edwardsville coach Kirk Schlueter. The team may get a wildcard to the National Tournament in Florida in October and will find out in the coming days. The same team also won the local 18U Advanced District League.

2. WHEN YOUR OPPONENT GIVES YOU A SHORT BALL. Take short balls and hit to either side of the court to open the other side to put a volley away. This is heavily dependent on how good your approach shot is. If done correctly, it can be an extremely effective way to apply pressure.

Congratulations, junior tennis! TEAM ACCOLADES: F 18U Intermediate Sectional Qualifying Champions F 18U Intermediate Sectional Runner Up F Local 18U Advanced District Champions

1. WHEN YOUR OPPONENT IS STRETCHED OUT IN A DEFENSIVE POSITION. Identify when your opponent is off the court and/or reaching for a ball. This most likely means a weak ball is coming back over the net. Move forward and take the ball out of the air to take recovery time away from them.

CLUB MAC

The MAC has a rich boxing history that dates back to the inception of the Club. In 1902, one year before the MAC opened its doors, former middleweight champion Tommy Ryan was hired to establish the Club’s boxing program. In November 1903, just two months after the MAC debuted, the Club hosted its first boxing event. The star of the squad was nationally-acclaimed boxer Robert Gresham. A year later, boxing was admitted to the 1904 Olympic Games, where MAC boxers competed. Just two months later, in 1905, boxing had become so popular that the MAC Athletic Committee decided to host monthly boxing matches. By the decade’s close, the MAC had assembled the best collection of boxers in St. Louis. The crew of pugilists began to make their mark throughout the country, winning national tournaments in San Francisco and Cincinnati. Some of the biggest names in the sport visited the MAC, highlighted by world heavyweight champion Gen Tunney when he attended the Club’s New Year’s Eve party in 1927. By the 1930s, the MAC’s era of producing top amateur boxers began to wane, but the sport remained an essential part of Club life. Regular boxing events were hosted at the MAC for the next several decades, but this trend also declined by the end of the century. In 2006, boxing at the MAC was revived with a big comeback. A new tradition was born as the MAC held its first annual Boxing Championships and has since evolved into one of the Club’s most popular events. A hidden treasure returns to the MAC more than a century later.

A rich part of the Missouri Athletic Club’s early history recently returned home to the Club. Member Alison Kinderfather was gifted items in a safe deposit box following the passing of a family friend. Found in the box were several MAC sports medals dating back to the early 20th century. Kinderfather generously donated the medals to the MAC. One of the most hidden treasures was a medal from the 1905 MAC Boxing with the name Fred F. Wiese engraved on the back.
