Water Wonderland
Clay Township and Algonac border the St. Clair River at the southern end of the Thumbcoast region. When visiting Harsens Island, use the ferry in Algonac to transport your car or bike across the channel. There is also a ferry service that goes from Algonac to Canada via the Walpole Algonac Ferry Ltd.
Stroll along the 1,800-foot Algonac boardwalk, fish from the shore, picnic in the waterfront park and enjoy fun outdoor concerts in the warmer months. Learn all about the local history of Chris Craft Boats and Gar Wood at the museum and the important role they played here and explore one of the world’s largest freshwater deltas.
Annual events held here are the Pickerel Tournament and Festival, Algonac Antique and Classic Boat Show, Algonac Art Fair and the Scarecrow Festival.

Island Time
Harsens Island is a must-see destination accessible only by water. Board a car ferry from mainland Algonac and cross the St. Clair River to the island, about a quarter of a mile across. Most of the land is a managed waterfowl and wildlife sanctuary with plenty to do such as boat rentals, water trails, a sunken shipwreck, restaurants and souvenirs.

Marine City is a popular visitor getaway noted for its unique boutiques, eateries and award-winning theatre performances. While visiting, spend the day at one of the many wonderful waterfront parks watching freighters and sunbathing at the beach. Take advantage of the wonderful amenities in Marine City that are walkable along the St. Clair River.
Historically, Marine City was known as a ship building center of the Great Lakes. Because of this, many captains, sailors and shipbuilders settled here and the homes reflect this grand architecture. Take a self -guided tour of these historic locations found on our Thumbcoast Heritage Tour.
Annual events here are the Summer Splash Bash, Merrytime Christmas and the Fire, Ice and Spice winter festival.

Boardwalk Charm
St. Clair’s boardwalk at Palmer Park is a relaxing place to unwind and have a picnic in the shade while watching freighters pass by. This historic city of tree-lined streets has an outdoor entertainment area with firepits, cozy seating, shopping and restaurants including a brewery and wine house. A short walk over the drawbridge from the boardwalk is the St. Clair Boat Harbor with a dockside campground, boat launch and kayak rentals. Paddle the slow-moving Pine River as it meanders around the city golf course on a scenic 8.4-mile trip. If you plan to arrive by boat, use the free day-dock or reserve an overnight boat slip and take advantage of the harbor shuttle to golfing, the museum and the River Crab restaurant.
St. Clair hosts a spectacular art fair, Rockin’ in the Plaza concerts, the St. Clair River Classic offshore powerboat races and Santa Parade.

Living Shoreline
Marysville’s living shoreline native plants give a natural, lush feel along the connecting waterfront trail system, the 54-mile Bridge to Bay Trail. The shoreline also provides an eco-friendly environment for fish, birds and aquatic plants. Along the waterfront is a dog-friendly beach, playground, concessions and restrooms. Parking is easy and convenient for a quick dip to cool off on a hot summer day. The city boat launch and fish cleaning station are also next to the beach and just north of here is a free, public kayak launch with access to the St. Clair River.
Across from the beach shoreline area is an expansive city park with shaded picnic areas, a splash pad, universally accessible playground, fitness areas and sport courts.
Popular annual events in Marysville are their outdoor concerts at Marysville Park, Summerfest and Hot Wheels Weekend.

Maritime Experience
The maritime charm of waterways, drawbridges, boat tours and sky-lined masts at the yacht club are part of the unforgettable experience in Downtown Port Huron. There’s an abundance of things to do within a 3-mile radius whether you arrive by boat, car or train.
The growing downtown district has been attracting new and exciting shops, restaurants and events. Take a sight-seeing tour by water on the Huron Lady II, by land on the Blue Water Transit or Port Huron Museum trollies. Walkable from downtown, hear a live narrative about ships at the Great Lakes Maritime Center and take a stroll on the Blue Water River Walk to see art sculptures, freshwater reefs and wetlands.
Take a short drive along the water from downtown north to the Huron Lightship Museum, Thomas Edison Depot and beaches. While there, climb Michigan’s oldest working lighthouse for an incredible panoramic view of the Blue Water Bridges, Canada and Lake Huron.
Annual events are the Bayview Port Huron to Mackinac Sailboat Race, SandFest, Art Hop, Prowlers & Silver Stick Hockey and events at the Blue Water Convention Center and McMorran Place.

Beach Getaway
Discover the charming beach village of Lexington and the panoramic views of southern Lake Huron on a relaxing getaway. Enjoy the close proximity of vacation amenities such as golfing, wine tastings at a vineyard, brewery, shopping and live entertainment at the Lexington Theatre.
Lexington’s waterfront park, next to the state harbor, has a large beach area for swimming or sand volleyball. Boaters staying overnight love the waterfront restaurant and walkability to the town. Take a walk along the long break wall to see breathtaking views of the sunrise or watch a kite surfer harnessing the wind.
Lexington is known for its Music in the Park series, Thumbfest, the Lexington Fine Arts Street Fair, Bach Festival and Christmas Horse Parade.

Waterfront Village
This historic waterfront village is a popular spot for fishing, sailing and scuba diving in Lake Huron. The Sanilac Shores
Underwater Preserve contains 163 square miles of shipwrecks with 16 wrecks lying above 120 feet. This is also a fantastic spot to book a charter for a memorable day of fishing with friends and family.
The Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum has 15 buildings to explore. Take a walk through their nature trail and the 1870’s Loop-Harrison Mansion, train depot, blacksmith shop and more. Onsite you’ll find the Barn Theatre, where you can watch a fun summer play.
Visitor favorites are the Huron Shores Golf Course, the eclectic Alli Bar and tours of the Port Sanilac Lighthouse in the summer.
Popular events are the Independence Day Fireworks, Blues Festival, Civil War Days and Haunted Village.

Sunrise Pier
The breathtaking glow of the sunrise at Trescott Pier is worth the trip to Harbor Beach. Take a walk down the 1,015-foot pier and see the off-shore lighthouse, bring your fishing gear to shore fish and have a picnic. In the summer months, enjoy a scenic boat ride to the historic Harbor Beach Lighthouse and explore inside.
Take a self-guided walking tour of 22 historical points of interest through their charming downtown area. On the tour you will see the Frank Murphy Museum, Grice House and beautiful art murals on the side of the Harbor Beach Community Theatre.
Paddle the shallow water shipwrecks and see the lighthouse on a rented kayak or paddleboard from Harbor Beach Kayak. You can rent bikes from them and explore the main street or the Harbor View Trail while visiting.
Annual events are the Maritime Festival, Music at the Beach, Harvest Festival Chili Cook-off and the Lighted Truck Parade.

Picturesque Point
Port Austin, at the tip of Michigan’s Thumbcoast, has unforgettable sunrises and sunsets. The expansive beaches and paddling adventures are just a few of the fun reasons to visit every summer. Among the popular destinations for paddle enthusiasts are Turnip Rock, sea caves, an off-shore lighthouse and the Broken Rocks Trail.
Port Crescent State Park is home to a Dark Sky Preserve including a birds of prey observation deck. Climb the sandy dunes and sunbathe while overlooking Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay.
In the summer, the farmers market and the Village Green pop-up shops are must-see shopping experiences. This friendly, walkable village has paddle sport and bike rentals at Port Austin Kayak and an outdoor beer garden. Nearby communities for day-tripping are Grindstone City, Caseville and Port Hope where the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse is located.
Port Austin hosts many annual events including Porch Fest, Lady’s Slipper Festival and the Winter Carnival.

Guiding Beacons
Colony Tower Light
6503 Dyke Rd., Clay Twp.
Built in 1925, this 136-foot tower had a navigation beacon from 1925 -1937 before being extinguished. In 2017, a beacon was installed once again making it an unofficial light.
St. Clair Flats South Channel Lights
9200 S. Channel Dr., Harsens Island
The St. Clair Flats Front and Rear Range Lights are located offshore in Lake St. Clair, they are viewable from land on a clear day.
Peche Island Rear Range Light
301 S. Water St., Marine City
This rear range light was originally located on Peche Island, Ontario in 1908. It was decommissioned and moved to Marine City to its current location in 1982.
Huron Lightship

Take an inside tour in the summer months of the last operating lightship on the Great Lakes.
Fort Gratiot Light

Michigan’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. Take a climb to the top and see panoramic views of southern Lake Huron, Canada and the Blue Water Bridges.
Port Sanilac Lighthouse
81 S. Lake St., Port Sanilac
This privately owned 1886 lighthouse has tours in the summer months through the Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum.
Harbor Beach Lighthouse
1 Trescott St., Harbor Beach
Built in 1877, this light is located offshore but viewable from the Trescott Pier. Boat tours are offered in the summer months.
Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse
7320 Lighthouse Rd., Port Hope
Walk the grounds of the lighthouse and the Keeper’s Museum of the 1857 light remotely operated by the Coast Guard.
Port Austin Reef Light
8774 Lake St., Port Austin
This light is located offshore 1½ miles. The light is viewable from the break -wall next to the harbor. Boat tours are available in the summer months.

Thomas Edison Park - International Flag Plaza
2200 Thomas Edison Parkway, Port Huron
These two locations are just north and south of the Blue Water Bridge crossing to Canada. This is the narrowest point of the St. Clair River so it will be the closest vantage point for viewing.
Marysville Living Shoreline

This living shoreline area has a beach, walking path and pier with unobstructed views of passing ships.
St. Clair Boardwalk
201 N. Riverside Ave., St. Clair
St. Clair has the longest freshwater boardwalk in the world offering expansive views of the St. Clair River. Enjoy the shady and sunny areas of Palmer Park at the boardwalk.
Lighthouse Park

Enjoy the fantastic views from all eight walkable waterfront parks along Water Street from Bridge to Pearl streets.
