welcome Opportunity is Knocking! “In the middle of adversity there is great opportunity.” ~ Albert Einstein Welcome to the Land of Opportunity - the Breezeway communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood. Our world has certainly changed a lot in the last six months, but in many ways, the changes have highlighted the amazing opportunities our area has to offer. This year’s guide is a little different. It’s basically divided into five Sections of Opportunities - Family Fun, Recreation, Community, Business and Education. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, get outside and enjoy our lakes, rivers and trails year round. Check out our galleries, museums and attractions. Don’t forget to visit the farms and farmers’ markets. And, while some events and festivals may be cancelled or postponed this year, others will be held, so please check either the event websites (web addresses included) or the Chamber website (www.ejchamber.org) for updates. You can also stay informed by signing up for the Chamber email newsletter from our website. Some of the biggest current opportunities in the area are in the Business community. In the Business section of this guide, you can read about the many types of support available for anyone thinking of starting or expanding a business. Plus, the fact that interest rates are so low, make it an ideal time to invest in the future. Opportunities are not only abundant in terms of business, but in terms of lifestyle. Low mortgage rates; award-winning schools; superior medical, health & senior services; very active organizations, clubs and houses of worship… all this and more, make the East Jordan and surrounding areas the perfect place to raise a family or retire. So, don’t miss out! Opportunity is knocking!
Most sincerely, Mary H. Faculak, President/CEO

Jordan River Arts Council Jordan River Arts Council brings the arts to East Jordan and the surrounding area from their gallery located at 301 Main Street. Area artists display their work throughout the year in unique themed exhibits. The gallery is housed in East Jordan’s former library building; a historic Carnegie Library, built in 1919 and lovingly cared for by JRAC since 1989. JRAC supports and promotes arts, culture and creativity and brings exhibits, classes, workshops, and performances to the community. The Council is a strong believer in education and introducing area youth to the fine arts through exhibits, hands-on experiences, in-school programs, and the annual awarding of arts scholarships. The Art Center
also serves as a meeting place for the Writers Group, Socrates Cafe’, and Artists Gathering of Plein Air Painters. In addition to memberships, donations, grants and in-kind services, JRAC’s main fund raiser is the popular Holiday Art Fair held the 2nd Saturday in November at East Jordan High School. JRAC now has a gift shop inside the Main Street gallery featuring the work of area artists and other unique artistic gift items. The gift shop and gallery are currently open by appointment only. To make an appointment, email jordanriverarts@gmail.com. This may change as guidelines change.

FAMILY FUN Opportunity is Knocking! East Jordan Historical Society Founded in 1976, East Jordan’s Portside Art and Historical Society was the first historical museum established in Charlevoix County. There are currently two locations where you can view historical displays and artifacts. Easiest to access is the revolving exhibits in the heart of East Jordan in City Hall at 201 Main Street. This downtown exhibit is getting a facelift as the museum curators catalog and organize the vast exhibits. The museum is open during regular City Hall hours and during East Jordan’s many summer events. Stop by to see the exhibits, or purchase our recently re-published “East Jordan Remembers: A Collection of Stories About East Jordan’s Past.” Also available at the Chamber Office or Busy Bridge on Main Street. Admission price is donation only. Elm Pointe houses the majority of East Jordan Historical Society’s artifacts, as well as featuring the Portside Arts Fair during the first week-end of August. In 2020, the art fair is August 1-2. Elm Pointe is located at 01656 S. M-66 Highway, about 1 1/2 miles north of town on Lake Charlevoix. The museum will be open for the Art Fair and books will be available then.
Castle Farms Castle Farms of Charlevoix is one of Michigan’s premier historic tour attractions and destination wedding venues. This beautiful French Renaissance castle built in 1918 features soaring stone towers, romantic courtyards and magnificent gardens, plus Norm, the Castle’s very own dragon! Now to decide which body or bodies of water to use? The Jordan River The Jordan River is a 24.9-mile-long stream, the largest tributary of Lake Charlevoix. The Jordan's headwaters rise from springs in the upper Jordan River Valley northeast of Mancelona in Antrim County. The Jordan River was the first river to be designated in Michigan's Natural Rivers Program. The Jordan River is well known for its world-class brook trout fishing and for its scenic canoe trips. The headwaters are accessible by many foot and snowmobile trails.
Lake Charlevoix Lake Charlevoix was once voted the second best lake in America in a USA Today poll, behind only Lake Tahoe. Being awarded this honor is partly due to the many forms of recreation the lake provides, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, boating, water skiing, and just relaxing on the beach. Lake Charlevoix is also one of Michigan’s largest and most magnificent lakes. It is the 3rd largest lake in the state in terms of surface area, but its shoreline length far exceeds that of any other inland lake in Michigan. If you kayak the entire shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, you will have traversed 60 miles! 16 27474_VisitorsGuide.indd 16

Chain of Lakes Water Trail The Chain of Lakes is a highlight to our region and it is no wonder. These connected lakes are diverse paddling opportunities on some of northern Michigan’s clear pristine lakes. The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This non-motorized water trail has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers. The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Paddle through a mile of protected shoreline, check out an island, or just enjoy the calm and quiet of paddling through the crystal waters. You can begin, end or pass through the three lakeside communities of Ellsworth, Central Lake, and Bellaire where you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities you need to make your trip complete. The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers looking for an adventure. Explore the serene Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of Torch Lake. In Bellaire, Alden, and Elk Rapids you will find all you need to enjoy your time on the water. While you are here, join Paddle Antrim for a local paddling class or event on the water. For more information on the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, classes/events or local rentals go to: www.paddleantrim.com.

More Hiking! Jordan Valley Pathway The Jordan Valley Pathway is an 18-mile hiking trail in the Jordan River Valley. The pathway winds through the Mackinaw State Forest along the Jordan River. This scenic valley is well worth a trip in any season, however fall colors are noteworthy due to its rich hardwood forests. Its looped trail system is mixed with moderate to rugged topography, providing excellent opportunities for hikers and backpackers. The full pathway is a good two-day hike. Backpackers can stay at the Pinney Bridge State Campground, located near the trail’s halfway point (dispersed camping is not allowed in the Jordan Valley). Hikers can conveniently start and end at the same place if completing a smaller loop or the whole trail. BUSINESS Opportunity is Knocking! What makes a place a great place to do business, to start a new business, or to expand a business? Is it the Location? The People? The Community Support? The Economic Potential? Actually, we know it’s All of the Above!
Throughout Michigan, great opportunities abound in areas called Opportunity Zones. The opportunities are for investors, entrepreneurs, community leaders, developers, and builders to make certain areas of Michigan better places to live, work and thrive. Through investments in Opportunity Zones, new housing will be built and existing housing will be improved. New small businesses will be launched. Mixed-use projects, infrastructure and community resources will be developed. And jobs will be created. www.miopportunityzones.com

BUSINESS Opportunity is Knocking! Our governmental entities are also instrumental in the development and growth of healthy businesses. CITY OF EAST JORDAN
In addition to City Hall operations, the East Jordan city government departments include 24-hour police protection, a devoted volunteer fire department, public works that includes public water and sewer services, parks/recreation, membership in the Jordan Valley Ambulance Authority and a very active Downtown Development Authority working on multiple projects and partnership efforts. East Jordan has been selected as an “Opportunity Zone” and will soon become a Redevelopment Ready Certified Community, as both are substantial labels when attracting economic growth and development. The city is constructing a new Master Plan/Land Use Plan in preparation of progress in our DDA, Industrial Park and waterfront zones. East Jordan is very proud of where we’re going and where we’ve been. Teamwork is a key component in everything we do. Leadership and collaborations between organizations, businesses, schools and government operations are strong in East Jordan and continue to build a resilient community.
VILLAGE OF ELLSWORTH
Founded in 1881 and incorporated as a village in 1938, Ellsworth is located on the scenic Breezeway and Chain O’ Lakes. If you are seeking a great place to live, retire, or play, Ellsworth is the place. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great area to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons. “Adventure begins in Ellsworth ... A Peaceful Retreat”
ATWOOD
“Governmentally” known as a “Place of Interest,” Atwood is home to several farm markets, a winery, 3 restaurants, a John Deere mecca, a famous tiny chapel and an 18-hole golf course. Oh, and a 156 acre public natural area is located on Lake Michigan which has some of the best sunsets in the State. In terms of business... Think “Agri-Tourism”
THE COUNTIES, TOWNSHIPS, & THE STATE OF MICHIGAN
The Breezeway communities also cross two counties and four townships. Charlevoix and Antrim counties have provided tremendous support for various business ventures, community projects and events, as have the four townships - South Arm, Banks, Wilson and Boyne Valley. The State of Michigan has also been a helpful partner on issues involving the roads and has many programs to foster economic growth and development. 58

EDUCATION Opportunity is Knocking! ELLSWORTH COMMUNITY SCHOOL Ellsworth Community School has a long and distinguished history of offering unequaled educational opportunities. Our motto “Big School Opportunities, Small School Relationships” summarizes our approach to education. Each student at Ellsworth is nurtured and encouraged to sample many academic and extra-curricular activities and to develop his or her unique talents. Most students actively participate in numerous before and after school activities while attending Ellsworth Community School. Ellsworth Community School was named an Academic State Champion by the Center for Michigan. We are annually ranked as one of America’s best high schools in US News and World Report, and continue to outperform other schools in the region based on standardized test scores. Ellsworth clearly offers its students unequaled opportunities. With a small student to teacher/staff ratio, all Ellsworth students have access to opportunities that are virtually unheard of in other schools its size, including; free developmental pre-school, full day kindergarten, on-line learning opportunities for advanced classes and credit recovery, college credit at no charge to students, music/ art/physical education for all students, iPads in every classroom, one-one laptops for all high school students, and access to career/technical education programs in graphic arts, agriculture, and building trades. Ellsworth Community School is a family friendly environment where parents and the community are an integral part of the every day activities of the school.
EBENEZER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Ebenezer Christian School in Ellsworth, founded in 1945 is a non-denominational school. Ebenezer Christian Preschool was founded in 2002. The preschool uses Zoo Phonics which is a method developed to make children strong readers at an early age. Our students use iPad’s during the school year which are integrated into their curriculum. The teacher incorporates online learning in all subjects and utilizes apps that are created specifically for education. Though we are a small school, we offer a great education in a loving environment and we strive to be an extension of the home. 60

EAST JORDAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS Building a foundation with a world class education combined with the small school feel and caring environment that our parents have come to trust, our goal is to provide our students with experiences that will last a lifetime... and memories to share forever. EJPS comprises a vibrant part of the community and takes its job of educating East Jordan’s youth seriously. Thanks to our generous community, the district was recently able to upgrade infrastructural items, replace technology, provide secure entry ways, replace buses, and overhaul the high school gym. In the classrooms, on stage, and on the field of competition, East Jordan students continue to make us proud. We are pleased to boast a wide variety of academic courses, and continue to grow while challenging our students to create, design, build, and apply. While academic studies and preparation is a primary focus, it is also recognized that in order to prepare our students to be well-rounded, productive members of a community, we must encourage them to take pride in all areas of their growth. Whether through athletics, the arts, community service or simply treating others with respect, East Jordan Pride is a commitment to always doing your best.
NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE Since 1958, North Central Michigan College in Petoskey, has been opening the door to academic success for residents by offering two-year associate degrees in the arts and sciences that are transferable to upper division colleges and universities. In addition, North Central has paved the path to better-paying careers through its applied science programs in business, education, health science, criminal justice, information technology and manufacturing. Equally important, North Central provides a second chance for residents by advancing their skills, switching careers or just getting more from life through higher education.
CHAR-EM INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT Char-Em ISD is a regional education service agency serving the public schools of Charlevoix, Emmet and northern Antrim counties. Our primary mission is to provide leadership and services that enhance the delivery of instruction for our 11 constituent school districts and assisting other public and parochial schools. We match services, materials and personnel in the areas of special education, school improvement, professional development, early childhood, vocational education, school safety, and administrative/business services, among other areas of expertise, to the needs of our local schools. :: www.ejchamber.org ::
