TORCH
By Sandy Frye
Torch Lake, located in Antrim County in Northern Michigan, is famous for its clear, turquoise water. As the northernmost part of the Elk River Chain of Lakes Watershed, Torch Lake has earned its reputation as arguably the most beautiful lake in the state (sorry Walloon!). Torch Lake is Michigan’s longest inland lake at approximately 19 miles from end to end. It is also the state’s second largest inland lake (behind Houghton Lake) at approximately 18,770 acres. With a handful of public boat launches around the lake, there are plenty of options to start your day on the water.

LAKE
Torch’s size makes it perfect for jetskiing, tubing, and wakeboarding. The sandbar at the south end of the lake is wellknown as a boater’s paradise for hanging out at anchor with friends and family. While Torch Lake is arguably the most beautiful in the chain of lakes, there are others connected to Torch that can make for a great weekend of exploration. Start in Torch, venture south through the Torch River into Lake Skegemog, turn your heading west and into Elk Lake, and you can end the day walking the streets of Elk Rapids for a meal or evening entertainment. Additionally, venture over to Clam Lake and onward to Lake Bellaire, and you can find yourself in beautiful downtown Bellaire for a visit to Short’s Brewing Company.
