Harry Partch Ensemble Musikfabrik 23 FEBR 2017 • 20:30 Music
Ever since its formation Ensemble Musikfabrik has had the reputation of being one of the leading ensembles for contemporary music. Following the literal meaning of its name, Ensemble Musikfabrik is particularly dedicated to artistic innovation. New, unknown, and often personally commissioned works in an unusual media are typical of their productions. The results of their extensive work, usually taking place in close collaboration with the composers, are presented by the Cologne-based international soloist ensemble in about 80 concerts a year in both Germany and abroad, at Festivals, in their own series “Musikfabrik in WDR” and in regular radio recordings and CD productions. Yannis Moralis - Christos Kapralos Friendship in Life and Art Yannis Moralis and Christos Kapralos first met and became friends at the Athens School of Fine Arts. They met again in Paris, where they eagerly explored modernist movements while remaining true to their classical values. In 1939, they returned to Greece, where they continued to pursue their dialogue with classicism throughout the German occupation. In the 1950s, each of the two artists developed his own personal version of modernism: Moralis his funerary paintings and Kapralos his bronze sculptures, produced by adopting the lost-wax casting process. These sculptures would bring him international recognition at the Venice Biennale in 1962.
Laurent Chétouane Khaos 9-11 Dec 2016 An encounter with chaos for dancers and musicians, based on J.S. Bach’s “Chaconne” How can we find a dance technique which frees the dancer from every form, from every momentary restriction and recognisable pattern? This question, which has played a role in several of Laurent Chétouane’s earlier productions, is now the focus of renewed intensity in his next dance project “Khaos”. For this piece, the choreographer will collaborate with five dancers and three musicians. The musical basis is J.S. Bach’s “Chaconne” and more specifically, the transitions between the variations. These segments are especially challenging in that the musicians must start and end the phrases at the same time. Ballet
Giselle Irek Mukhamedov – Marius Petipa / Adolf Adam 16 December 2016 - 31 December 2016 Conductors: Elias Voudouris - Zoe Zeniodi | Choreography: Irek Mukhamedov - Marius Petipa Giselle, one of the Romantic period’s most famous ballets with dreamlike music by Adolf Adam, is returning to the Greek National Opera choreography by Irek Mukhamedov, based on Marius Petipa’s classic version. Giselle is a turning point in the history of ballet. Although it had been forgotten in Europe for many years, in the early 20th century it began to resurface in the repertoire of large ballets. The role of Giselle, dubbed ‘the Hamlet of ballet’ is even today a major challenge for classical ballerinas. For the countless fans of dance, Giselle never ages because it is a work which shines a bright light on deep emotions, such as love, envy, betrayal, madness and above all describes an immense love that manages to overcome death to protect life itself. A selection of 18 bronze sculptures by Kapralos will go on display, alongside a small retrospective exhibition by Moralis. A total of 50 masterpieces by Yannis Moralis from his substantial donation to the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutzos Museum and from private collections trace the artist’s evolution from his early career to the classical abstraction of his last works. The two artists – eventually neighbours on the island of Aegina – never ceased to pursue a contemporary dialogue with Greek antiquity. Acropolis Museum Inaugurated in June 2009, this light, airy glass-and-concrete building was designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi. Archaic and classical finds from the Acropolis site are displayed here – proud statues of the ancients and life-like stone carvings of animals. The top floor is devoted to the marble frieze that once ran around the top of the Parthenon. About half of the pieces are originals, while the remainder are white plaster copies. The missing pieces were removed by Lord Elgin in 1801 and are now in the British Museum in London. The Greeks have wanted them back for decades, and hope that this blatant presentation will finally convince the British to return them. There’s also an excellent restaurant on the second floor, open during museum hours, and till midnight on Fridays. 15 Dionyssiou Areopagitou St., 117 42 Athens www.theacropolismuseum.gr/en

ODYSSEYS October 03 / 2016 - October 01 / 2017 The new exhibition of the National Archaeological Museum “Odysseys” is the main commemorative event on the occasion of the 150th anniversary since the foundation of the Museum. It attempts to give an account of the adventurous journey of man through time considered from an abstract and symbolic perspective that draws its inspiration from the Homeric Odyssey. Without reciting the mythological
epic of Homer the exhibition is inspired by the archetypal character of Odysseus and recounts through the emblematic, as well as the lesser-known ancient works of the National Archaeological Museum, the long chronicle of the beleaguered man, his incessant endeavour to tame his environment, conquer new places, broaden his horizons, establish well-governed societies and fight against the perishable nature of his existence with the aid of love and creative act.
