Maria Kravvariti In your opinion which is the skill required when communicating directly with Guests during their welcome to the Hotel? Having worked for 18 years in the Front Office and having cooperated with excellent professionals in the sector, I believe that the people who work in this Department represent not only the company, but also the principles and its culture. The basic skill that a Member of the Front Office Τeam should possess is the smile! Smiling is an essential qualification required, in order to communicate with Guests effectively. Another skill of the same importance is the immediate understanding of each Guest’s needs and the ability to make him feel unique and precious. Effective communication with Guests is the most important skill that each member of the Front Office Team should possess. By being a good listener, you become more effective and capable of solving problems in a faster way. Were there any cases when you were called to take some initiatives and in which area? Of course there were cases, when I was called to take an initiative. When working in such a “lively” department that operates 24 hours a day, with many Guests from all over the world with different needs, then a variety of problems may occur that require immediate response and solution, especially late at night. Taking initiatives means at the same time being responsible for the results. Experience and the ability to discern the need for immediate solution will both guide you to make the correct decision. Describe an interesting incident from your business experience / career. There are many interesting incidents I could recall and describe, others were pleasant while others not so. To be honest, the ones I remember more intensely are the unpleasant ones. One incident that I would like to share with you started unpleasantly, but had a good ending. Some time ago, one of the Guests who had booked a room, called us while being in the taxi, on his way coming to the Hotel from the port of Piraeus. He was returning from Santorini, the destination that he and his wife had selected for their wedding. While disembarking from the ship, the lady fell and hit her leg. Please note that communicating with them was extremely difficult, since the couple spoke only Chinese. After a while they arrived at the Hotel where I welcomed them and realized that the lady experienced severe and unbearable pain. I immediately called a collaborating tour-guide, who was more than willing to help us, asking for his assistance with the translations. Our Guests immediately felt safe. After arranging all the practical details, the lady was transferred to the hospital, where her condition was diagnosed to be very serious and had to undergo surgery. The rest of the practical matters were taken care of by their Embassy. Upon their return to their hometown, I received a letter in which they expressed their gratitude for my contribution and the immediate response to the lady’s problem; a letter which was signed by all the members of their family! One of the many incidents that we deal with on a daily basis and that make me feel very lucky working in the Front Office Department, the “heart” of the Hotel!

Elias Soumpasis In your opinion which is the skill required when communicating directly with Guests during their welcome to the Hotel? The essential need is that our Guests feel welcomed. Guests appreciate personal assistance, accompanied by a warm and sincere smile. It is also important to have flexibility, vigor, credibility and a professional, polished appearance. Expertise and critical thinking provide you with more confidence when dealing with any issues that might occur. Other required skills are empathy - the ability to understand and share the feelings of Guests -, convincing quality and the talent for sales. Were there any cases when you were called to take some initiatives and in which area? Front Office is similar to the cockpit of a Boeing 777. There were many cases when I was called to take initiatives, in several matters of different areas in relevance with Reservations, Insurance issues, Maintenance, Public Relations. It is true that most initiatives require immediate resolution since the Hotel is like a living organism with thousands of different cells. Describe an interesting incident from your business experience / career. I will take you back, several years ago, in summer 2004 while the whole country and particularly Athens was fiercely preparing to host the Olympic Games; another major sporting event took place, the UEFA European Championship in Portugal. In June 25th 2004, when the Greek National Football Team played against France there were many French Guests staying in our Hotel who were preparing to go out to watch the match in a cafÊ or restaurant nearby. On that day it was my Birthday so I had brought sweets to offer. A group of French Guests asked me if I had brought the sweets to comfort myself after the bitterness I would get at the end of the match. I explained to them that it was my Birthday. After the end of the match and Greece’s victory against France, Syntagma Square was crowded with people celebrating. Suddenly, a big surprise! The group of French Guests entered the Hotel holding a Birthday cake and a bottle of champagne to wish me Happy Birthday and more wins to come for the Greek team. A simple incident, totally different from many other, more important ones that has been engraved on my memory, as an example of the uniqueness of human relations; human relations that are made even stronger through the philosophy, principles and policy of our Hotel.

The greatest and finest sanctuary of ancient Athens, dedicated primarily to its patron, the goddess Athena, dominates the centre of the modern city from the rocky crag known as the Acropolis. The most celebrated myths of ancient Athens, its greatest religious festivals, earliest cults and several decisive events in the city’s history are all connected to this sacred precinct. The monuments of the Acropolis stand in harmony with their natural setting. These unique masterpieces of ancient architecture combine different orders and styles of Classical art in a most innovative manner and have influenced art and culture for many centuries. The Acropolis of the fifth century BC is the most accurate reflection of the splendour, power and wealth of Athens at its greatest peak, the golden age of Perikles.
The Acropolis Museum is consistently rated as one of the best museums in the world. Devoted to the Parthenon and its surrounding temples, it is cleverly perched above Athens like a luminous box. The large glass panes beautifully draw in the ancient and modern parts of the city, making it a truly evocative experience. Designed by New York’s, Bernard Tschumi, with local Greek architect Michael Photiadis, it is the perfect sanctuary for the ancient artefacts that were found in and around the Acropolis and successfully deconstructs how the Parthenon sculptures once looked to the citizens of ancient Athens. Located in the central neighbourhood of Makrigianni, the museum is framed by olive trees and propped up by concrete pillars, revealing the site’s archaeological excavation below. The remnants are of an ancient neighbourhood that once thrived, complete with a drainage system, bathhouses and mosaics.

13:30 FOOD BAZAAR Varvakeios agora Varvakeios Municipal Market of Athens could justly boast having catered to the dietary needs of entire generations of Athenians throughout its approximately 150-year long history. In 1874, during the term of office of Mayor Panagis Kyriakou, it became clear that it was high time for the capital of Greece to acquire a modern Municipal Market built along the lines of similar commercial constructions throughout Europe. Until then, the Central Market of Athens was just a cluster of wooden sheds aligned along the edge of the Ancient Agora of Athens, at the end of Aiolou Street, where the Roman Agora and Hadrian’s Gymnasium are located. The decision to erect the municipal market was adopted in 1876, since the town plan for Athens provided for the development of a commercial triangle delineated by Panepistimiou, Ermou and Athinas Streets. Thanks to the generous donation from Ioannis Varvakis, one of the greatest benefactors of Greece, a wealthy merchant engaged in caviar trade, works commenced in 1878; Varvakeios Agora (agora is translated to market) is a block-long edifice delimited by Athinas, Sofokleous, Aiolou and Evripidou Streets, downtown Athens. The Fish Market, situated in the centre of the market complex, sheltered by an impressive doublepitched roof, is the most vibrant place in Varvakeios Agora, attracting the majority of visitors. Enter the fish market and you’ll find any fish your heart desires. Humble fishes, like sardine, Atlantic chub mackerel, smelt, picarel, bogue, unconditioned cod and anchovies come in abundance A morning walk in the fish market is a good opportunity to get to know the “fish geography” of the Aegean Sea. Fish comes mainly from Michaniona, Kavala (north of Greece), Kymi, Skyros, Naxos, Paros, Kalymnos and Symi. The most glorious day for the Fish Market is Ash Monday when Athenians flock since dawn to buy the most fresh sea food for the day. 3 11:00 Changing of the Presidential Guards The Changing of the Guard at the Parliament Building at Syntagma Square in Athens is a fun bit of pageantry worth watching if you find yourself in the area at 11 a.m. each morning. The special military unit, called Evzones, of the Hellenic Army, stands perfectly still before changing positions in front of the Hellenic Parliament. 12:00 NUMISMATIC MUSEUM The Numismatic Museum is one of the oldest public museums in Greece. It was established in 1834, the same year as the National Archaeological Museum. The love for Antiquity, prevalent at the time in Europe, and the recent foundation of the Modern Greek state had created the conditions of protecting the national cultural heritage. Hence, from the beginning, the history of the Museum was directly related with that of the Modern Greek state, the social circumstances and the cultural directives of each age. A traditional dish from Pelion, spetsofai is another winter staple. Greek Stuffed Cabbage Leaves Greek stuffed cabbage leaves, or lahanodolmades in Greek, is a traditional dish of cabbage leaves filled with a mixture of minced meat and rice and served with an egg and lemon (avgolemono) sauce. The stuffing is usually flavored with oregano and mint, and if you are a vegetarian, you can simply leave out the meat. Though the dish is simple, it is flavorful, with the sauce adding a lemony layer, complementing the cabbage.

Greek National Opera In March 2017, the Greek National Opera relocated to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).
Following a first successful season at the new premises at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, which started back in October 2017 and ended in July 2018, the Greek National Opera has turned a new page in its long-term history. I feel that my vision and objectives, stated last February, when I embarked on this journey as the GNO Artistic Director, turns into reality this forthcoming artistic season 2018/19. Our programming is based upon seven thematic cycles, where we find great works from the 18th, 19th and 20th century, from the repertoire of the most important opera schools. Our audience gets acquainted with masterpieces that will be presented for the first time in Greece, like Jancek’s Jenûa, which officially launches the season, works that haven’t been staged at the GNO for many decades, like Massenet’s Manon and Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, but also with Verdi’s La Traviata presented for the first time at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. At the same time, the collaboration with the Royal Opera House brings to us Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra and the return of Donizetti’s highly successful Lucia di Lammermoor, alongside new productions of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Bellini’s Norma. For the new season, we introduce great co-operations with artists from all fields of art, such as the emblematic figure of the French cinema and theatre Fanny Ardant, the Οscar-winning costume designer Milena Canonero, the great collective of La Fura dels Baus, German director Nicola Raab, German set-designer Tobias Hoheisel, the director of the Berlin State Ballet Nacho Duato. It also meets again with important artists such as the outstanding theatre director Thomas Moschopoulos, international set-designer Giorgos Souglidis, the artistic director of the Alternative Stage Alexandros Eflkidis, the choreographer-director Apostolia Papadamaki, amongst others.
Founded in 1939, the Greek National Opera is the only opera house in Greece and one of the most acclaimed opera houses in Europe. In March 2017, the GNO was relocated to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in a new 28,000 m2 auditorium, designed to enhance the opera experience for patrons and artists alike. Productions are held at two stages, the Stavros Niarchos Hall (1400 seats) and the Alternative Stage (400 seats), as well as at the open-air Odeon of Herodes Atticus, while various programmes are presented in other venues inside and outside its premises. The GNO’s mission is to offer audiences performances of opera, ballet, operetta and opera for children, musicals and concerts, among others, and to commission new works by today’s leading opera composers. Moreover, by designing educational and social activities, the GNO aims to cultivate and develop a symbiotic relationship between artists/teachers and participants, regardless of age, cultural and social background, knowledge or skills.
The GNO Ballet will present three new exceptionally ambitious productions: Swan Lake choreographed by the new Ballet Director Konstantinos Rigos, great Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato’s Herrumbre (Rust) and Stravinsky’s triptych From Russia with love, choreographed by Daphnis Kokkinos, outstanding German choreographer Marco Goecke and Konstantinos Rigos. The Manos Hadjidakis Cycle continues with the presentation of his great works Magnus Eroticus, Gioconda’s Smile, Amorgos, Reflections at the Stavros Niarchos Hall, and with a day-long tribute on 23 October, his birthday anniversary in all GNO venues at the SNFCC. Our GNO Children’s Stage will present for the first time in Greece Ernst Toch’s The Princess and the Pea. In January 2019 the cycle ‘’Music and visual arts’’ in collaboration with Organisation NEON will be launched, inviting famous artist Nikos Navridis to present the first amongst a series of installations. The season will be unofficially launched with a Rossini Gala, while in April Dimitri Platanias gives a recital at the Stavros Niarachos Hall. A good season to everyone!

T he emperor’s n ight in ga l e Opera for children and youth A collaboration with the International Animation Festival & Agora Animasyros The musical fairy tale of the great Lena Platonos The emperor’s nightingale, a work that “has never been presented live, due to its technical difficulties and operatic structure”, as she herself has mentioned, will be presented by the Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera as its main opera production for children and youth, for 30 performances. It is an impressive production combining opera with animation. A collaboration with the Animasyros festival!
The first choreography of the Greek National Opera’s new Ballet Director, Konstantinos Rigos, constitutes a new reading of the most famous ballet of all times. Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake throughout the ages enraptures and moves the audiences while being the utmost career challenge for professional dancers, since the virtuosity and lyricism demanded for its comprehensive interpretation, are almost beyond human limits. At the same time, it is an autonomous music work of great interpretative demands. Yann i s M o rali s Retrospective exhibition of the great Greek painter Yannis Moralis. Yannis Moralis was one of the most popular artists of 20thcentury Greece: pioneering painter, talented print-maker, gifted set designer and in spiring academic teacher. Through his paintings, sculptures, architectural commissions, record covers, and book illustrations, the exhibition aims to shed light on the artist’s progress from one decade to the other, bringing unknown facets of his life and work to the fore.
Di gi tal exh i bi ti o n o f adva nced technology “ To mb o f C h ri st: T h e mo n ume n t an d th e project” The emblematic project of the conservation and rehabilitation of the Holy Aedicule of the Holy Sepulchre in the Church of Resurrection in Jerusalem, that was successfully accomplished by the Interdisciplinary Team of the National Technical University of Athens and delivered to the three Christian Communities, Guardians of the Holy Tomb, in March 2017, is presented in the Temporary Digital Exhibition of Advanced Technology “Tomb of Christ: the Monument and the Project” at the Byzantine and Christian Museum from 21 May 2018 until 31 January 2019.
