ABC CAPRICORNIA RADIO SHINES THE SPOTLIGHT ON MOUNT

Mount Morgan was once again in the media spotlight when ABC Capricornia Radio presenter Paul Culliver, broadcasted his Morning Show on Tuesday, 27 October from the Mount Morgan Visitor Information Centre.

This was part of ABC Capricornia’s program to present the CQ candidates for the upcoming state election to their listeners. This took into consideration all electorates in Central Queensland. Regional towns visited included Biloela, Gladstone, Mount Morgan and Yeppoon. This also provided an opportunity for the towns to showcase their attractions, specialties, talent and futuristic direction. Due to COVID restrictions, the program organisers had to limit numbers to special invited guests and Mirani Political Candidates, however the program was informative and entertaining and showcased Mount Morgan in a positive light as not only a visitor destination, but a great place to live and work. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. (MMPAD) President John Steinberger gave Paul a tour of the facility while imparting his vast knowledge of the history of the railway and its importance to the mine and the town and businesses. When asked what he thought were the priorities for the town’s advancement John said he felt these were a permanent water supply, tourism through promoting the town’s history and heritage, the reopening of the mine, town and river beautification Arlene Roberts from the QCWA was the first guest on the show and Arlene spotlighted the cookbook which QCWA would be

releasing soon and spoke of the difficulty the organisation faced with fundraising efforts due to the pandemic.

employees who retired when the mine closed. Bette and Ray agreed that they would not live anywhere else.

Ben Lodewikus, the Community Education Councillor with Mount Morgan State High School spoke about the programme to integrate Indigenous culture into the curriculum at the School, by connecting with Traditional Owners, Elders, Parents and via Yarning Circles and other strategies which should be in place in Term one or two next year.

Local talent was also showcased on the day with a stirring rendition of “All I Want is You” by musician and music teacher, Peter Camm, while Angela Johnson brought along her wood carvings and paper cutting crafts which are on display at Mount Morgan No 7 Gallery.

Gordon Luck, DON of the Mount Morgan Multi Purpose Centre, which offers more than just Hospital Services, highlighted the mental benefits of joining the Men’s Shed, while coming together to help the community. The group has assisted with the construction of a time out seat and Djeme drums for the music program at the High School. Paul interviewed long term residents including Raymond Steadman and Bette Broom both 92, (sorry Bette) who both worked for Mount Morgan Limited and were two of the many local

attack directly towards the town. Chauvel knew, from aerial photographs, that the Turkish trenches in front of the town were not protected by barbed wire. However, German bombing had forced the 4th Brigade into a scattered formation and it was not until 4.50 pm that they were in position. The Brigade assembled behind rising ground 6 kilometres south-east of Beersheba with the 4th Light Horse Regiment on the right, the 12th Light Horse Regiment on the left and the 11th Light Horse Regiment in reserve.

A Mirani Electorate Candidate Forum was also a highlight of the morning with Candidates responding to questions from Paul pertaining to the issues relevant to Mount Morgan residents including: water security, Tourism, the former Gold Mine and Fireclay Caverns. Beersheba cavalry charge remembered 103 years on

With so many commemorative ceremonies cancelled in 2020, it was pleasing to see that the last great cavalry charge was remembered on 31 October 2020.

A small contingent of 5th Light Horse Regiment Mount Morgan Troop representatives rode along the Burnett Highway, onto Morgan Street to ANZAC Park. Troop Secretary, Ron Stehn outlined the history of the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade in 1917. The charge of the 4th Australian Light Horse at Beersheba late in the afternoon of 31 October 1917, is remembered as the last great cavalry charge. The Page 4

assault on Beersheba began at dawn with the infantry divisions of the British XX Corps attacking from the south and south-west. Despite artillery and air support, neither the infantry attacks from the south, or the Anzac Mounted Division’s attack from the east had succeeded in capturing Beersheba by mid-afternoon. With time running out for the Australians to capture Beersheba and its wells before dark, Lieutenant General Harry Chauvel, the Australian commander of the Desert Mounted Corps, ordered Brigadier General William Grant, commanding the 4th Light Horse Brigade, to make a mounted MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

The Australian Light Horse was to be used purely as cavalry for the first time. Although they were not equipped with cavalry sabres, the Turks who faced the long bayonets held by the Australians did not consider there was much difference between a charge by cavalry and a charge by mounted infantry. The Light Horse moved off at the trot, and almost at once quickened to a gallop. As they came over the top of the ridge and looked down the long, gentle open slope to Beersheba, they were seen by the Turkish gunners, who opened fire with shrapnel. But the pace was too fast for the gunners. After three kilometres Turkish machine-guns opened fire from the flank, but they were detected and silenced by British artillery. The rifle fire from the Turkish trenches was wild and high as the Light Horse approached. The front trench and the main trench were jumped and some men dismounted and then attacked the Turks with rifle and bayonet from the rear. Some galloped ahead to seize the rear trenches, while other squadrons galloped straight into Beersheba. Nearly all the wells of Beersheba were intact and further water was available from a storm that had filled the pools. The 4th and 12th Light Horse casualties were thirtyone killed and thirty-six wounded; they captured over 700 men. The capture of Beersheba meant that the Gaza-Beersheba line was turned. Gaza fell a week later and on 9 December 1917, the British troops entered Jerusalem. 4-18 NOVEMBER 2020

THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS The ancient Greeks referred toward those who did not speak their language as babblers. Their utterances were completely unintelligible and sounded like ‘ba-ba-ba’, and they, anyone who did not speak Greek, became known as “barbaros”. There we have the source of one of the most powerful words ever spoken throughout our human history, “barbarian”, which came to refer in a generalized way to any human or group who is perceived to be either uncivilized or primitive or evil or warlike. It is a label that can be applied to anyone deemed to be “different” or a “lesser” tribe than your own, and it has been used and misused by those in power time and time again throughout our bloody history to “otherize” potential enemies and/or conquests in order to raise public support, fervour and finances; and to justify going to war. Although of course, it must be said that sometimes they really were just marauding barbarians...

Children’s Book Week attracts budding authors across the region Themes of family stories and resilience resonated in the annual First Five Forever’s Children’s Picture Book Competition held by Rockhampton Regional Libraries as part of recent Children’s Book Week celebrations.

The competition called on writers and illustrators of all ages to create a picture book suitable for young readers aged 5 years and under. Stories about chooks, colours, pets, siblings, family outings and superheroes featured, with colourful and creative illustrations used to extend the storyline. Communities Spokesperson Councillor Drew Wickerson said that authors and illustrators performed exceptionally well under difficult COVID-19 restrictions. “Our normal picture book competition generates hundreds of entries each year with lots of wonderful concepts developed and crafted for young readers. This year, creators had to move into a digital space to upload their entry for our judges. Library staff were able to help with some of the technical issues associated with uploading the entries, which was invaluable,” Cr Wickerson said. “The response to this year’s competition really highlighted the enthusiasm for literacy in our region. Congratulations to our competition winners, across all ages, on your outstanding efforts.” Early literacy advocate and competition judge Lindell Lutton said the competition entries were of a very high standard with a range of beautifully told and presented stories. “It’s exciting to see the calibre of the next generation of authors and illustrators in the region. Don’t forget that your local library has hundreds of wonderful picture books to inspire you if you are interested in writing and illustrating for young readers,” Ms. Lutton said. Comics and Graphic Novels Galore @ Your Library Many adults have fond childhood memories of hoarding a well-thumbed stash of comics in a box under the bed or in a bookcase. Fast forward a couple of years (or decades!) to the next generation and chances are they may have also discovered the clever storylines and inspiring artwork of graphic novels as well as comics. If you have grown up loving comics, then you are in for a treat at your local library. Library

Frozen, Lion King, Star Wars and Mickey Mouse to Marvel Comics’ Captain Marvel, Spiderman and The Avengers. Other publisher brand favourites such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Hellboy, My Little Pony, Peabody and Sherman are sure to inspire and delight, as will classic comic brands such as Disney, Marvel, IDW, and Dark Horse. Fine tune your selection in RB Digital to comics written in English or Japanese Manga, for different reading levels and over 22 genres. There is literally something for everyone. If you have a yen to read a real book, then take your pick from nearly double the amount of graphic novels in the physical book collections for adults, teens and children. There are over 3200 graphic novels to choose from across all library branches in the Rockhampton Regional Library Service. In the words of the iconic comic book writer, editor, publisher and producer Stan Lee, The experience of reading a printed comic book will never change, but now, thanks to the digital age, there are many different ways to enjoy the same story. Digital comic books, of course, can be interactive in many different ways, allowing the reader to feel like a participant in the story. Drop into your local library branch and find out more about how you can access these fantastic resources. Remember that membership of our Living, Learning, Libraries is free!

HIGH SCHOOL BEQUEST Students of Mount Morgan High are set to benefit from a generous bequest left to the School by former Mount Morgan resident, the late Mr Ted Bradfield Shaw. The Shaw Bequest is to be used to fund programmes and equipment that benefit students of all interests and abilities. Born in Yakima (Washington State USA) in 1942, it was in his home town that Ted began his lifelong association with education and self-improvement. After graduating from high school he joined the United States Air Force and served as an electronics technician on state of the art military aircraft such as the F106 Starfighter, America’s principal interceptor during the Cold War. From the USAF he moved to the Martin Marietta Corporation where, in the mid-1970s, he was involved in NASA’s Viking programme to land unmanned spacecraft on Mars. A career change saw Ted head home to his home state and to university to re-train as a secondary school teacher. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree and later a Master of Education degree from Washington State University. A move to Australia resulted in Ted taking up employment as a teacher, first in Alice Springs and later at Gladstone and Yeppoon. It was whilst teaching in Central Queensland that TAFE Qld employed him to teach computing skills to adults after school hours at Mount Morgan High and so began his long association with the School. Away from teaching, Ted was always a busy man. In his younger days he was a keen sportsman, playing grid iron football as a student. During his time at Mount Morgan he had two great passions, photography and history. In the days before digital photography he became expert at developing photographs in his own darkroom. His love of history led him become a regular volunteer at the Mount Morgan Museum. He designed and made the story boards that adorn the walls of both the Museum and the Railway Station. He also served as a volunteer at The Argus.

ALMA ST VET NEWS Has your pet started to scratch but doesn’t have fleas? Are they getting older and slowing down a little? Fortunately these issues and more can be treated at our Mount Morgan clinic. With the change of season we are starting to see a lot of pets with allergies and skin conditions, which can flare up as the weather changes. There are several ways we can treat these conditions and help your pet stay comfortable. Depending on the severity of your pet’s condition there are injections, oral medications and even a medicated wash to help your pet stop scratching. You will need to see your vet however, as they will need to prescribe the best course of treatment for your pet. We also see many older pets who are slowing down. As they age, pets can develop arthritis, just like us. Fortunately there are supplements available such as 4cyte and Pernaese Powder that can help your pet, as well as injections administered by your vet. These can help relieve some symptoms and protect your pet’s joints to make them more comfortable. Many of our pets also aren’t fans of having their nails trimmed. Long nails can become a problem for them if they start curling over or growing into their paw pads. Luckily, Dr Jamie is always happy to give our furry friends a ‘salon day’ and give those nails a quick trim. So if your pet is looking a bit itchy, a bit sore or even just needs a quick trim, give us a call on 4922 8138 and our lovely receptionists will book your appointment for our next visit to Mount Morgan.

Pride in Your Town

It is 30 years since the Mine closed on 16 Nov and so we decided to retell its history for our newcomers. 1853 - Dee Valley explored by Archer Bros 1882 - Gold discovered on “Ironside Mountain” by William Mackinlay 1882 - Syndicate formed between three Morgan Brothers, Thomas S. Hall, William Pattison, William Knox D’Arcy, and Walter R. Hall. 1884 -1886 - Syndicate mining produced (1.8 tonnes of gold.) 1887-1925 - Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company. 1904 - Smelter commenced. 190 - Electrolytic Refining & Smelting Mount Morgan. 1912 - Walter and Eliza Trust Fund Formed. 1925 - Underground fire – mine flooded. 1927 - Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Ltd. Liquidated. (Mined 8.5 M tonnes producing 157.3 tonnes of gold, 114340 tonnes copper.) 1929 - Mount Morgan Limited floated. 1934 - Open commenced.

Cut

mining

1968 - Mount Morgan Limited became a subsidiary of PekoWallsend ltd.

1972 - New Flash Smelter erected – first in Australia.

1981 - Open Cut finished mining, 17 July. (Total mined ore 50.7M tonnes, waste 93.7M tonnes). Smelter continued with Mount Chalmers concentrate plus concentrate from Warrego Mine N.T. 1984 - Smelter closed 7July. 1982 - Tailings retreatment Plant commenced operation. Finished operations 9 November 1990. 1990 - After 108 years (1882-1990) last day of operations at Mount Morgan was Friday, 16 November 1990. What a history! The dams of Mount Morgan Water has always been a problem for our town and so many dams were built in earlier times. In the beginning small dams nos. 1, 2 and 3 were built between the Meyenberg crossing and downstream to Tipperary Point. In 1884 no 4 dam was constructed and often called the electric light dam as it was built behind the then powerhouse, now the Assay Office. No 5 was built in 1888, near Meyenberg crossing. It was breached in the 1890 flood and then a wing on the right end was built six foot higher so that would not happen again. This dam at that time was the largest dam in the colony and held a capacity of

15 million gallons.

In 1894 a dry spell was experienced and no 6 dam was built behind the football grounds but remained empty for a couple of years. No 6A a smaller dam was built further upstream holding back some of the Dairy creek water. Then in 1902 No 7 Dam (our big dam) was constructed but again remained dry and was not filled till 1904.In that dry period water was railed from Rockhampton in ten, 2000 gallon tanks. In recent times funding became available and an extension on the height of the wall allows for greater capacity. No 7 now serves as our domestic water supply. At this present time no 7 is very low so many inches of rain is required to fill it. Today of course, except No 7, have had most of the walls removed to allow the river to be free flowing, but by leaving the ends remaining they have preserved a bit of local history. The question is will Mount Morgan ever have a pipeline to bring water to our town? How about the Rookwood Weir? Is that our answer? We are all very hopeful of heavy rain so our Big Dam can once again be such a scenic tourist attraction for locals and visitors. Do think clean and Be tidy …..so little effort - so much reward.
