WATER WOES SOLUTION SOUGHT

A new Facebook Page - Mount Morgan - Secure Our Water - has been receiving a lot of questions. In an effort to sort the circulating “wheat from the chaff” about various aspects of the dam and the ongoing water problem, page administrator, Kirra Swain has forwarded a letter to State and Federal Members and Rockhampton Regional Council. Ms Swain said there were so many different theories and knowledge sets in the public arena, that it was necessary to send a letter to gain a better understanding and to “debunk” some of the myths. These include dredging of the dam, condition of the dam wall, a pipeline from Stanwell, Fletcher Creek decommissioning and use

of the Open Cut water. “It’s important that we are all on the same page,” she said. Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc (MMPAD) has been advised by Council that a newsletter will be delivered to all hourseholds in the community outlining short and long term options that are outlined in Council’s Drought Management Plan which is triggered when the No. 7 Dam levels reach 10 percent. MMPAD has been lobbying all levels of government for many years.MMPAD has also been advised that consultation with the community will take place in the near future. Due to COVID restrictions and social distancing requirements it may mean that more than one meeting is held to ensure all residents have an opportunity to attend.

Water and Supporting a Better Environment Councillor, Donna Kirkland, said: “We know that this is a really important issue in Mount Morgan. “Councillors and senior officers met on Tuesday to discuss the latest water situation, and we will be considering a whole range of options for both short and long term water security. We will be writing directly to every household with an update this week, and we will post to our Facebook page and website too. “As ever, if residents have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch.” Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said she knew the last 12 months in particular have been challenging for Mount Morgan residents, and she has reassured the community that whatever happens with the rain we will not leave you without water.”
