W17 – Bigger & Better — How to Trade Up Wednesday, Feb. 8 • 11:00am – 12:00pm • ROOM 220–222 [ AIBC=1 Non-Core LU; IDCEC=0.1 CEU; BOMI=1 CPD ] Kyle MacDonald captured the world’s attention when he set out to trade a single red paper-clip for a house. Fourteen trades and countless stories later, he succeeded. MacDonald’s story is unique not only for its end result, but how he got the ball rolling. Kyle MacDonald Inspired by the kids’ game “Bigger and Better” MacDonald set out to trade up his one red paper clip with the end goal of finding a house. He launched his quest on the Internet and used the web to solicit trades from all over the world. The story travelled like wildfire and caught the attention of news and entertainment agencies across the globe. Audiences will learn about MacDonald’s encounters with Alice Cooper and Corbin Bernsen, and understand that his story isn’t really about the trades he made, but about building relationships, being open to adventure and believing in a dream. Presenter: Kyle MacDonald, Founder, One Red Paperclip Biography: Originally from Belcarra, British Columbia, Canada, Kyle has planted more than one hundred thousand trees, delivered more than one thousand pizzas, but eaten only one scorpion. He has also traded one red paperclip for a house only once. MacDonald traveled extensively in Canada and the US to make his trades, meeting people in Massachusetts, Queens, Los Angeles and Seattle, to name a few. Each trade had a unique place, person and story to tell, including trading a camp stove to a US marine sergeant and meeting Alice Cooper. Along the way, MacDonald and his paperclip caught worldwide attention from the likes of ABC, 20/20 and Hollywood. Visitors from as far away as Australia flew to Kipling to watch him make the final trade for his new house, and his story has inspired many others to dream big and begin their own Internet trades. He has made hundreds of media appearances including, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Hour, MSNBC, BBC, CBS, CNN, CBC, City TV, Global, and has been featured in USA Today, Maclean’s, The New York Times, In Touch Magazine, VH1, MTV, The National Examiner, Reader’s Digest, LA Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and The Toronto Star, among others. When he’s not stealing a flag from the Prime Minister’s office or promoting Alberta Beef by hitch-hiking in a parade, you might find him leaving his wallet in El Segundo or hanging out in Bangkok modeling Italian Soccer jerseys to fund 4am Red-Bull and Rum-fueled urban hitchhikes. His mom still cuts his hair.

T21 – Growing Sales in a Tough Economy Thursday, Feb. 9 • 1:00pm – 3:00pm • ROOM 215/216 [ AIBC=2 Non-Core LUs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU; BOMI=2 CPDs ] One of the major keys to successful selling is to maintain control of the sales process. Top performers recognize that their success is directly related to the relationship between their emotions, their behaviour and their skill. In this highly informative seminar we will review the relationship between these three, identifying our limiting beliefs and developing new beliefs to support more favourable outcomes. This event is for presidents, owners and entrepreneurs who are searching for solutions to the business obstacles they face when trying to sell, manage a sales team, and grow business in this tough economy. The topics covered will include the greatest barriers to growing sales in this economy, why these things occur and some insights into how to overcome them.

Thursday, Feb. 9 • 10:00am – 12:00pm • ROOM 217–219 [ AIBC=2 Core LUs; IDCEC=0.2 CEUs; BOMI=2 CPDs ] Peoples’ most important “product” is their creativity. Clients and employers expect innovative and creative solutions to their complex design problems and depend upon their workers to deliver results. It’s critical, therefore, that people cultivate Liesbet Trappenburg inspiration and replenish it with a healthy work/life balance based on core values, confident decision-making skills, and a visionary outlook. Without it, business people quickly burn out and produce mediocre results. Attendees will learn unconventional tools and strategies to help them be good stewards of their time, energy, and creativity…the 3 most important resources of their professional and personal lives regardless of economic conditions. Through interactive lecture, small group discussion, worksheets, real-life stories and games, designers will: • Explore the direct correlation between sustainable design concepts, creativity and work/life balance. • Identify & reclaim core values. • Test intuition as an effective decision-making tool. • and more. Attendees will learn that “sustainable design” is not just a trend in the built environment, but a lifestyle that can maximize their creative talents and personal fulfillment through a renewable and inspired process. T22 – Construction Hot Topics — 3 Current Issues Thursday, Feb. 9 • 1:00pm – 3:00pm • ROOM 217–219 [ AIBC=2 Core LUs; IDCEC=0.2 CEUs; BOMI=2 CPDs ] Join the Clark Wilson construction team as they update you on three current hot topics in construction in an interactive seminar. B.C.’s Home Warranty Program: What exactly is the 2-5-10? The reality of residential construction is that construction defects occur, no matter how sophisticated and reputable the builder. B.C.’s home warranty program, administered by the Homeowners Protection Office, and regulated by the Homeowners Protection Act and Regulation, is designed to give the homeowner peace of mind and financial security against construction related risks. That security, however, comes with a cost to the construction industry, which has impacted the industry as a whole. In this segment, attendees will learn key elements of the new home warranty program, and the roles and responsibilities of the warranty provider, the builder and the homeowner, along with the risks of non-compliance. In addition, understand the difference between a builders’ contractual warranty obligation to the developer, or a contractor’s obligations under a performance bond, and the new home warranty. The Art of a Builders Lien — Audience Questions Answered! Builders’ liens are an effective tool for contractors to get paid or obtain security for payment — if handled properly. Filing, removing, advancing and thwarting a builders’ lien claim can be a work of art or a disaster. There are many mistakes that contractors and owners make when dealing with a builders lien. There are also many misconceptions about liens and “grey” areas on the legislation. Attendees will learn about these common mistakes and misconceptions regarding the Builders Lien Act and lien procedure in B.C. The

contents of this segment will be driven by what you want to know. Email questions to us ahead of time at sks@cwilson.com. This is your chance for “free” legal advice! L&M Bonds — The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Contractors supply labour and materials and expect to be paid. In an uncertain economy, payment is unfortunately not always made. Contractors can be provided with some assurance when a labour and material bond is taken out on a project. While the L&M bond may provide protection to trades, it may also provide benefits to other parties in the project. In this segment, understand the function of a labour and material bond, and the rights and obligations of the obligor, the obligee and the principal, in this tri-partite contractual relationship. When should one take out a labour and material bond? When should one make a claim under a labour and material bond? What duties does a surety have to investigate the claim? When should the surety pay? What defences can a surety make against a claim?

W05 – Evolving Trends in Development of Rental and Non-Market Housing

W E D N E S D AY, FE B R UA R Y 8 W02 – A Future-Proof Building Envelope: Latest Research and Technology

SPONSORED BY

Wednesday, Feb. 8 • 8:30am – 10:00am • ROOM 210 [ AIBC=1.5 Core LUs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ] Energy efficiency and indoor air quality are critical issues affecting building performance. With the cost of energy expected to greatly increase, less efficient buildings will have much higher costs, impacting vacancy and rental rates. Research on the thermal performance of a building’s envelope, and the impact of new technologies will be discussed by industry experts on how to increase operation efficiency, avoid indoor air quality issues and enhance property values.

Wednesday, Feb. 8 • 8:30am – 10:00am • ROOM 215 [ AIBC=1.5 Non-Core LUs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ] The cost of housing continues to rise in the region. Metro Vancouver predicts a demand for 65,000 rental units over the next 10 years. Of this, 21,400 units will be for “low income” residents, far more than was provided over the past 10 years. Yet there is very limited senior government funding available. This situation is causing municipalities to pursue new ways to achieve both market rental and affordable rental housing. This session will explore the need for non-strata housing, what non-profit agencies can bring to the table and the role of municipalities in working with developers. Moderator: John Holland, P.Eng. C.Eng. LEED AP (BD&C), FEC, President, PHH ARC Environmental Ltd.

Presenters: Graham Finch, MASc, P.Eng. Dipl.T, Building Science Research Engineer, RDH Building Engineering Ltd. Alexander Krenczik, Dipl.Ing., Schoeck Bauteile Gmbh Mark Lawton, M.Eng.,P.Eng., Principal, Morrison Hershfield

W03 – Cradle to Grave Community Energy Systems: Optimizing Resources Every Step of the Way

W06 – Managing Gen Y: Transform Your Leadership to Attract, Engage and Retain the Next Generation of Workers

Wednesday, Feb. 8 • 8:30am – 10:00am • ROOM 218 [ AIBC=1.5 Core LUs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ] Energy and water supply and management are the great challenges of the 21st century. Industry is now responding to this challenge by creating community energy systems that directly address demand reduction, increased efficiency, and provide renewable and innovative solutions to complex challenges. Roger Bayley P. Eng, will discuss the district energy system at the Vancouver Olympic Village as a case study that demonstrates opportunities for maximizing energy resources from cradle to grave. Presenter: Roger Bayley, B.E. Structural, P. Eng., Roger Bayley Inc.

Wednesday, Feb. 8 • 8:30am – 10:00am • ROOM 219 [ AIBC=1.5 Non-Core LUs; IDCEC=0.1 CEU; BOMI=1.5 CPDs ] What’s the matter with younger workers today? They’ll quit a good job just to go to another for an extra dollar an hour. They are impatient to advance without first paying their dues, or Tara Landes gaining enough experience. Many see the construction industry as facing a crisis of “entitlement” where younger workers are concerned. So how do you keep them committed and on the job? How do you inspire loyalty in the crews when older workers will stay longer, but not the young guys? Presenter: Tara Landes, President, MRSI Benchmarking Inc.
