Thursday, Feb. 25 • 10:30am–12:00pm • $45 T18 – Architecture Keynote Panel: Today, Tomorrow & Afar: Design Trends of Present Day and Predictions for the Future AR CO ID PM SB [ AIBC 1.5 Core LUs, BOMI 1.5 CPDs, HPO 1.5 CPDs, IDCEC 0.1 CEUs ]
Over the course of history, the practice of architecture has unfolded in ways that reflect the places and times in which the designers lived. In that time, new materials, unique approaches, and daring designs have moved the design process forward challenging each generation to push the bar. While many argue that architecture has moved leaps and bounds, other ask has it come far enough? Building technology and connectivity continue to advance; the consciousness around the health and wellness of a built environment and its tenants has heightened; energy performance requirements of buildings have become more stringent, all whilst the aesthetic deliverables of a project remain just as demanding. This discussion will pay tribute to the historical advances of architecture while identifying and expanding on present day practices and trends. The panelists will evaluate how industry is meeting the increasing demands of project stakeholders. Panelists will take a future forward look at challenges and opportunities, predicting behaviour and changes they expect to see in the coming years. S u pp o r t e d b y

The 2030 Challenge set a goal of producing only net zero energy, new buildings by 2030 in North America, and ensuring existing buildings improved their energy performance by 50%. Current codes won’t get industry to this lofty goal, but it’s not clear that LEED won’t either. The granddaddy of green building is competing with a proliferation of other rating systems that promise net zero performance and in some cases, are easier and cheaper to implement. What needs to change if LEED is going to continue to lead the way for green building? This panel brings together differing perspectives on LEED’s continued relevance. Panelists will take a 360 degree view addressing topics such as: • • • •
Cherry picking through credits rather than setting sustainable goals Buildings that fail to live up to their design intent Competition from other green building certifications and standards Future of LEED

Lead, Create, Collaborate – Collaboration: What team are you on? [ BOMI 0.5 CPDs ]
Between internal project teams, external project partnerships and organizational leadership teams, the value of a highperforming team plays a crucial role in organizational success. Yet, a high percentage of teams (nearly 80%) continue to struggle and limit their potential by operating in sub-standard, dysfunctional levels of engagement. If effective team Rusty Sherwood collaboration can dramatically impact organization performance and individual outcomes, how should we go about building peak teams? Why is it that a team of star performers can fail to perform together? Through an exploration of the essential ingredients to building a great team, learn how to lead teams to operate at your peak level of performance. Keynote Speaker: Rusty Sherwood, Senior Consultant, FMI Corporation

The top three project success criteria are user/client involvement, executive management support, and a clear statement of requirements. Malfunction in these areas lead to the most commonly cited reason for poor project performance: communication failure. Your achievement as a Project Manager is directly tied to your ability to communicate effectively and influence the stakeholders. This session will increase awareness of your own personal communication style, how you impact others, communication styles, filters, generational diversity in the workplace, communications protocols, channels, and processes.
Wednesday, FEb. 24 • 12:30pm-3:30pm • $125 W22 – Successful Project Management Part 2: Discipline and Effective Communications AR CO EN ID PD [ AIBC 3.0 Core LUs, BOMI 3.0 CPDs, HPO 3.0 CPDs, IDCEC 0.3 CEUs ] The most common reason for poor project performance is communication failure. This collapse occurs many times because of poor management of communication channels and stakeholder expectations. This session will give you the tools needed to effectively manage communications, understand who needs what, and when. Also highlighted will be the impact of communication planning on the success of your project, the value of stakeholder analysis, the importance of roles, how an information distribution matrix can take the stress and guesswork out of communicating project information, status reporting, protocols and tips for effective communications management.

How are students being educated about their careers and how can we engage them once they join our companies? This seminar will outline how to better attract, engage, and retain a highly misunderstood generation. The future of work is happening now and businesses have to be sure that the communication of their culture is being done properly to attract the best employees for their organizations.

Now it seems that the only place you can enjoy the smooth and mellow pleasure of a cigarette is in your own home. Or is it? This seminar looks at the problem of second hand smoke in strata developments and what stratas are doing and can do to deal with it. Speaker: Paul Mendes, Partner Lesperance Mendes LLP

This lively session will present the findings from the research and follow with a discussion with industry leaders on what the implications are for the future of construction in BC.
From schools to shopping malls, we’ve become accustomed to over air-conditioned spaces – a design habit that is wasteful from not only the business perspective, but from an environmental one as well. Meanwhile, air movement, once a pillar of good design, David Kuch Patrick Wilson has been relegated to a mere alternative means of cooling. By reconsidering the relationship between air conditioning and elevated air speed, architects can affect meaningful change in building sustainability and comfort. This presentation will focus on innovative HVAC system designs and review recent changes to ASHRAE Standards 55 and 90.1, which substantiate the impact of elevated air speed. Exploring air movement and ventilation offers an alternative to the business model of expensive and energy-intensive heating and cooling. These strategies ask architects to consider the natural environment in relation to their work. [ AIBC 1.0 Core LU, BOMI 1.0 CPD, HPO 1.0 CPD ] The National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) describes calculations to determine wind loads acting on a building roof. Until recently, Canada was faced with a regulatory void because professionals who calculated roof wind loads had no means of finding a roof assembly certified to these uplift pressures. With the recent inclusion of CSA A123.21 into the 2015 edition of the NBCC, professionals can turn to manufacturers for roof assemblies tested for dynamic wind uplift.
Attend this interactive panel discussion and hear esteemed members of the AEC industry address the broken project delivery model. Highlighting current industry challenges, this session will focus in on why the construction delivery process is overwhelmingly low-tech oriented. Panelists will discuss possible ways to improve, deliver and execute project delivery, expanding on the best practices of leading firms and professionals. Panelists will address costing, communication & collaboration, managing the project team, project delivery methodology, and legal matters. This seminar will conclude with panelists taking a future forward look of where industry goes from here.
