Family Promise of Baldwin County has been serving homeless families with children since 2008 and are excited to be a part of the 2021 Inspiration Home. The organization works with churches in surrounding areas to support homeless working families with children by providing them with a safe place to sleep, home cooked meals and loving support.
2020 and the COVID pandemic has been a time of challenge but also opportunity for Family Promise. Family Promise started their newest program called “Homeless No More” providing homeless prevention and rehousing services with the help of two grants, Help Us Move In, Inc. and Baldwin County Impact 100. Since starting in June of 2020, Family Promise has helped prevent an additional 61 families with 182 children from becoming homeless and allowed families to leave shelter quickly by helping with their first month’s rent and deposits. We feel keeping children from becoming homeless as well as minimizing the time a child is in shelter are best for them and our community.

Thebustling small town of Fairhope, Alabama, rests on the gently sloping bluffs above the shores of Mobile Bay. Founded in 1894 by an adventurous group seeking to establish a utopian town, Fairhope blossomed through the years, all the while retaining its small-town charm. From its quaint downtown, full of boutiques and sidewalk cafes, to the acres of agricultural land which have supported so many through the generations, you will lose yourself in the beauty that is Fairhope. Spanish moss spills from the branches of massive live oaks while horses graze on rolling hills just minutes from the shore. Modern-day residents enjoy numerous public waterfront parks that were so thoughtfully guarded by the city’s founders. Beautiful tree-lined streets, a vibrant art scene and an unmatched quality of life have made Fairhope a top travel destination as well as the place in which so many have chosen to raise their family or retire. The Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay is the perfect place to call home.

WATERSHED provides full-service architectural design, sustainability consulting and master planning services. Working across all market sectors, the team enjoys helping organizations plan for sustainable development as much as they enjoy working with homeowners to plan for the next phase in their lives. WATERSHED is located in Fairhope, at the base of one of the largest watersheds in the world. The actions of millions of people and businesses upstream have significant impacts on the health of our bay, and therefore our local economy. The natural beauty of our community is a constant source of inspiration, but also a reminder that on this finite planet, we all live downstream.
While growing up in New Zealand, Andrew Robinson watched his parents tend to their own gardens, and after a year in college in Connecticut, transferred to Auburn University where he graduated with a degree in horticulture and landscape design. Now, he ventures out to client’s homes helping them design their outdoor spaces to be inviting and peaceful sanctuaries for families to enjoy the outdoors. Father Nature Landscapes is committed to cultivating growth—in passion, in servitude and in family provision—and is devoted to being a great place to work while developing a mastery of the many disciplines within the landscaping trade.
Rebecca Dunn Bryant is the founding principal of WATERSHED. With more than 20 years of experience in sustainable design, Rebecca has a passion for beautiful design that inspires a greater connection to the natural world. She is a registered architect and a LEED Fellow, with experience in civic, educational, mixed use, commercial, as well as custom residential projects. Nestled into an enclave on the bluffs overlooking Mobile Bay, the 2021 Inspiration Home is located in one of Fairhope’s most historic neighborhoods, just a stone’s throw from downtown. A public park is at the heart of the Bluff neighborhood running along Bayview Street allowing spectacular views of the water to be enjoyed by all who visit. Prominently featured in many historic photos is the notable wooden staircase found along the bluffs that give way to the public beach down below. The park serves as a shared public green and frequent setting for sunset picnic suppers, yoga, dog walking, concerts, and weddings. Lined with matured live oaks and native fruiting trees such as satsumas and pears, a combination of coastal cottages that have adapted over time alongside newer homes sit along the waterfront.

Designedas a habitat restoration and enhancement, the landscape was a collaboration made to include four areas of emphasis. The front yard was designed as a food forest including a cluster of citruses near the street to share with neighbors, and a variety of other edible plants for foraging. The planter beds surrounding the terrace soften the entryway and serve as a Kitchen Garden with herbs at easy reach for cuttings. A “Belgian fence” espalier of pomegranate trees serves as a focal point at the entry, showing off this ancient super fruit. A small hedge of tea camellias buffers the guest parking area which can be harvested to make both black and green tea. The remainder of the landscape is a Wildlife Garden showcasing native plants that provide food as well as offer medicinal purposes. The rear yard is shaped to capture and infiltrate rainwater from the roof and driveway preventing flooding, erosion, and pollution.

TheWatershed Inspiration Home celebrates a healthy coastal lifestyle and a healthy environment, with beauty and style. The architecture draws on influences from the Arts and Crafts movement focused on embracing craftsmanship, and the ways that the Cape Dutch and French Colonial adapted traditional design styles for a hot humid climate. Inspiration also stems from the original Fairhoper’s who were optimistic intellectuals, and loved nature and the arts.
The architecture of the Inspiration Home is shaped by both the site and by the climate. The deep, overhanging roof shelters the home from both the heat of the sun and the intense rainfall of the gulf coast. The windows and skylight are placed to capture daylight in each room and introduce views into nature from all angles.
While this is a luxury home, WATERSHED used the same affordable green design strategies that they have used with Habitat for Humanity and other affordable home builders to reduce energy use by half. After factoring in the rooftop solar panels, the Inspiration Home is projected to use 72% less energy than a benchmark home and will be the second Zero Energy Ready and Indoor Air Plus certified home in Fairhope, and South Alabama.
The interior design provides health and comfort by integrating natural materials, views to nature, interior plants, elements of water and dynamic natural lighting. Numerous studies show that these “biophilic” design strategies reduce heart rates and promote positive mental health and wellbeing. Interior materials also are meant to eliminate toxic ingredients that could impair indoor air quality.
The home’s adaptable design and resilient structure conserves materials by allowing the home to adjust to changing family needs without significant renovations. Whether you are interested in the design, the technical details, or both, the Watershed Inspiration Home will capture your eye and your imagination.

Oversized bookshelves line the back wall providing space for a cozy library, a full bar equipped with a hidden fridge, and extra storage cabinetry. The circular window is set high up enough to overlook surrounding houses and catch the eye into the treetops. The chandelier provides a black iron accent consistent throughout the house.

“MY GOAL IN DESIGNING THIS SPACE WAS TO BRING NATURE INSIDE! I DID THIS USING NATURAL ELEMENTS AND COLORS, INCORPORATING GREENS, EARTH TONES, CONCRETE, PLANTS, AND WOOD. THIS SIMPLE BUT ELEGANT SPACE MAKES ANYONE FEEL WELCOME INSTANTLY!”
– ANN INGE, ROOM DESIGNERA CUSTOM SKIRTED BREAKFAST TABLE ALLOWS DINING SEATING FOR FAMILY DINNER OR CHAIRS CAN BE REMOVED FOR ENTERTAINMENT SPACE
inspiration from a vintage Turkish rug from their travels, Stock & Trade Design Co. incorporated rich, muted tones of Mediterranean blue, warm browns, and subtle pops of olive to compliment the natural and earthy tones of the floors and windows. With the area exposed to the surrounding rooms, a comfortable space was created to cater to a family’s day to day needs, while also remaining elegant for entertaining. A large cast stone fireplace serves as a major focal point for the room finished in a honed oyster shell. Seating is abundant with an oversized natural linen sofa, a pair of washed wood framed chairs, and two French seamed slipcovered swivel chairs in a rich olive velvet for a bold touch. A wild and rather unconventional Arteriors chandelier hangs above constructed with layers of white bleached rattan creating a wonderful, billowy play with shadows dispersing a soft glow throughout the room. An array of pottery and accessories tops two contemporary cabinets providing additional height and dimension to the space.

Aligning with the coastal lifestyle and achieving a healthy environment, this design integrates natural materials, organic references, and handcrafted goods from both local and national artisans. In true Vellum and Velvet fashion, a little bit of lux and sophistication was incorporated through earthy tones, layered textures, and sleek accents. Coated in the color Plantation by Benjamin Moore, the master is outfitted with a clean lined king bed adorned with original artwork by local artist Karen Lea Sandifer. Two handcrafted, washed oak nightstands sit on each of its sides with an open-air bottom for necessary storage. Atop them rests two Visual Comfort ceramic lamps with exaggerated natural shades for a contemporary touch. The tall ceilings of the home’s stairwell provided the perfect canvas for an expansive gallery wall. Artist and designer Elisabeth Hays drew inspiration from the home’s eco-friendly theme by selecting a more neutral, tone on tone color palette for the butterflies, each originally crafted by Hays herself. The abstract chandelier is inspired by florals with six layers of rattan and densely braided edges providing a soft diffused light. Natural light from the ventilating skylight reflects off the organic shapes and tones of the butterflies, give them an uplifting sense of flight on every level.
“THE STAIRWAY COULD’VE BEEN A REALLY DARK SPACE BECAUSE IT’S IN THE CORE OF THE HOME, BUT BY PUTTING THE SKYLIGHT IN AT AN ANGLE WHERE THE NOON SUN WILL NEVER COME DIRECTLY DOWN, IT BOUNCES INTO THE LIGHT WELL AND GETS DIFFUSED SO IT IS SHARED FROM THE GROUND FLOOR TO THE TOP.”

color palette gives this guest bathroom some edge featuring Cambria’s Buxton dark, grainy countertops and a dramatic cowhide mirror providing a solid foundation for the space. Two energy effecient scones incorporate natural materials by creating biophilic patterns of light and shadow. The slender columns of crystal in a hexagonal shape allow for the illumination to be distrubuted all around. An industrial faucet mimics the look of an exposed pipe complementing the concrete textures in the countertop and tile reinforcing the elemental nature of water. Oak and olive floor mosaic make up the shower tile design.
Campesino Rum founder Hatton Smith II’s affections for finding adventure south of the border comes naturally. The Birmingham native grew up traveling to coffee farms around the world with his father, the owner of Royal Cup Coffee. At 19, he took a trip to the wilds of Central America and continued to go back as often as he could during his college days. Those Jaunts inspired his venture in rum making, something he started in the jungle and has since refined as Campesino Rum. Now based in Birmingham, the company sources its blends from the Caribbean and South America. Campesino can be found throughout Alabama at bars, restaurants, and ABC stores.

Tranquil hues and clean lines create an idyllic escape in this spacious guest bedroom designed by Michelle Strength of Inhabit Interiors. Grounded by natural furnishings, Strength incorporated a mix of refined pieces and personalized accessories to give the perfect amount of balanced sophistication. A clean, low headboard is flanked by organic sculptural bedside tables and a chartreuse green velvet bench adding a touch of luxury and depth. Custom made draperies outlined with Samual & Sons Positano fringe and a distinctive rope console table give a nod to 1950’s French designers Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet. Vintage leather-bound copies of Jane Austen novels sit atop an antique benched oak Louis XV chest and a collection of framed, paper collage art crafted by Strength herself depicts 8 separate islands to complete the room. The soothing color palette and subtle textures reflect a modern and relaxed coastal contrast.

Extending from the bedroom is a spacious hallway leading past two generous sized closets with sliding doors, and into the bathroom. A set of nude paintings by Kelly Ogburn of Little Art Mart embellishes the walls and a vanity stool by Palacek Rattan completes the room. A single wall sconce by Sean Lavin adds light for guests to get ready for the day, and a woven flush mount by Arteriors gives a cool and casual statement to the space it brightens. This dynamic and textural shade is crafted from buri midrib and carefully set to evoke a sense of motion. Off the third-floor landing, accompanying the three guest suites, sits the treetop lounge offering a flexible space that can serve as a homework or office space, a casual lounging area for teens, a cozy media room for movie nights, or even as an overflow guest room. For this snug space, designer Summer Ennis was inspired to create a “nest” like feeling applying a metallic leaf wallpaper by Albany on the ceiling to compliment the rich blue color on the walls. Comforting fabrics and rustic accessories such as the bamboo lounge seating and miniature wooden doll chairs are paired with an assortment of original photography by Ennis herself. Window treatments by Lu Ann Fields peer into the canopy of an adjacent live oak tree as well as provide a glimpse of the Bayview balcony.

This bright and airy space combines the classic with the dramatic in this stunningly chic room. In contrast from the other guest bedrooms, this room features soft blue walls in Benjamin Moore’s ‘Cool Breeze’ and is accessorized with coordinating items from Towne and Beech and greenery scattered throughout provided by Cornucopia Gardens. Custom interior window treatments catch the eye with two stunning wallpaper panels hanging on each side of the bed. Designer Suzanne Winston based the space off of the term “Elegant Bohemian” which is usually associated with the artists of the time, as well as writers and other eccentric intellectuals. She and her team gathered inspiration from the free-spirited personalities that lived in Fairhope in the early days combined with a sense of Boho fashion.

"BECAUSE THE LOT SLOPES 10 FT DOWN, THAT GAVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SLIDE ALL OF THOSE EXTRA THINGS HOMEOWNERS WANT UNDER THE HOUSE— SUCH AS A GARAGE AND A LITTLE FLEX SPACE.”
- REBECCA BRYANT, ARCHITECT & DESIGNER
The downstairs flex studio is a multipurpose, spacious area that can be outfitted to play a variety of roles in the home such as a playroom, a media room, or used as a separate living space as its own suite. Because the lot is sloped 10 feet from street to rear, the flex studio and surrounding rooms were designed to be tucked under the bulk of the home, preserving more landscape, and reducing impervious surfaces. Included in the space is a full bath that is accessible from both the entry hall as well as the studio and can be closed off if desired for privacy. Mashburn’s goal was to create the perfect get-away, and surround guests with things that move and inspire them. Her own design aesthetic was inspired by nature to provide comfort, connection, and an uplifting Zen sense of rightness. Originally meant to just house the air conditioning vents, Mashburn converted the back room off of the flex studio into her own personal meditation room with candles, an original chalk mural, and reflecting mirrors creating a peaceful and quiet safe space.
