Why Do The Black women on Reality TV Sound Like Gay Men?

When we watch television these days, we have been introduced to some very colorful people. People like Kenya Moore, Nene Leakes, Kim ZoziakBearman, Mariah Huq, Quad Webb-Lunceford and so many more. These people have entertained us over the years and thru these women, we have met many of their gay friends and associates like Derek J., Miss Lawrence, Rico Chappelle, Dwight Eubanks and Brandon Deshazer to name a few. With the introduction of all of these character, viewers have been treated to a glimpse into their worlds. We are privè to how they spend their days and night and how they conduct business. Many of these women seem to be surrounded by gay men. From their Glam teams to their event planners, we are introduced time and time again to a revolving door of gay professionals. Whether or not we agree with some of their choices, the ratings don’t lie. Millions of people watch the shows week after week, season after season. Each year, they provide the networks with recordbreaking ratings.

9

Why Do The Black women on Reality TV Sound Like GayMen? While these show are broadcast to entertain, many of the exploits of these characters have caused controversy. One of the biggest examples came from the Real Housewives of Atlanta after one of the biggest altercation scenes broke out. The altercations started from an argument between Kenya Moore and Christopher Williams. That altercation caused Kenya to confront Christopher’s common-law wife Natalie. When Christopher intervened by grabbing Kenya’s arm, that set off a chain of events that ended with Kenya’s friend Brandon and Apollo(Phaedra Parkes’ husband) having throwing actual punches. In recounting that fight on multiple occasions, Nene Leakes referred to Brandon as “a queen in lingerie” among other things. These statements were seen by many as an attack on Brandon’s sexuality and to others completely homophobic. When confronted about these statements, Nene has been very dismissive and has given half-hearted apologies. She even went as far as to be confrontational to her boss, Bravo Executive Andy Cohen, when he brought this up to her during the reunion show. This situation highlighted a level a disrespect that many have seen evolve from year to year with Nene and her association with gay men. The very thing many gay men liked about Nene was her very accepting embrace of gay culture and the gay men in her life. Year after year, we have seen many of those associations erode. Now, many wonder after looking at her recent actions, if it was all a well-orchestrated rouse. Married to Medicine has two characters that seems to have completely adopted the language of some very expressive gay man into every part of their lives. While many characters adopt a gayer use of language when around their gay friends, Mariah and Quad use this speech throughout their daily lives. While Mariah has adopted this speech as a part of her ‘holier than thou’ persona, Quad’s use of this language has many wondering whether it is just her trying too hard. The constant use of this language seems unnatural and inauthentic in its overuse. Many gay men find themselves saying ’I don’t even talk in this manner and I’m gay’. The pattern of speech is reminiscent of when you meet a white person whose vocabulary consists of black slang. It causes you to wonder ’is this really authentic or are they just trying too hard’. Without knowing this person’s history, there is no way to know one way or the other. You just have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I guess, we’ll have to do the same for Mariah and Quad. That doesn’t mean that it will be dismissed. But from these examples, one thing is for sure. Many of these characters are influenced by gay culture. Whether the influence is a good or bad thing, we will have to just wait and see. I’m sure as these shows continue, we will see more and more examples to fuel our opinions. 10

Back of the Closet

Dating 101 by Rafael Solece I recently had a conversation with some of my friends which revealed something that was very disturbing to me. I do not know why it affected me this way, since I haven't been married that long, but it did. It struck me as odd that most gay men do not know how to date. A lot of gay men tend to fall into the same trap. We hook-up, we fall in love, and we break up all before the next airing of Scandal. It’s literally the ultimate merry-go-round. Of course, unlike the childhood fun we use to have, this is a very serious problem. Especially if you are a same-gender loving male seriously trying to find love. I have to be honest. Truth be told, in my formative years, I too was a lost lamb amongst wolves. When I was single and dating, I had no earthly idea that dating didn't consist of a headboard and some knee pads. I too, considered a good first date to be one that ended between the sheets or with me hoplessly in love and planning the perfect gay wedding. Hell, by the end of my first semester in college, I had met, moved in, and coupled up with my first lover after only a week of courtship. Now tell me I ain't bad! Neverthe-less, not everyone is as blessed as I was. We don't all actually fall in love at first sight. In fact, it’s more of a lust-filled, fairy dusted haze.

Most gay men date what is pretty. We don't actually consider a person’s intellect, spiritual growth (not religion), goals, ambitions, etc. We are more concerned with what could be happening tonight than what is going to happen tomorrow. I'm not saying that living for today or getting laid isn't healthy and fun. What I am saying is that if you want to actually have a healthy dating life then you probably need to actually know what dating really looks like. I have few suggestions.

Back of the Closet

Dating 101 by Rafael Solece 20 Minutes Or Less: On first date, 20 minutes is all you really need to determine whether a person is worthy of more of your time. I consider the first date to be the most important date there is. That is because a first date is a chemistry test. It gives you an opportunity to see if there are any sparks. I used to like to take my boys to Starbucks. If I wasn't thinking about wrapping my warm coffee stained lips around his left nipple by the time I finished my Grande coffee then nine times out of ten, I was probably going home with a cold latte and getting into a cold shower. Fuck Your Check List: If you have a checklist, throw it out. Most gay men do not have real expectations or standards. They make up these laundry lists of expectations for their perfect partner. The problem is, there is no such thing as Mister Perfect. He does not exist. However, there is a ‘Mister Right For You’. He ain't got the perfect job or the perfect body. He damn sure doesn't live up to our TV land expectations of perfection but if you are realistic about your expectations for the kind of man you want in your life, then you will find the right man for you. Everything That Glitters Ain't Gold and all Sugar ain't Sweet: No pun intended. For the life of me, I will never understand why gay men will go out of their way to date a swarovski covered banana peel. If he looks good but ain't got no job or goals then you might as well prepare to waste your time. Unlike everything else, time is something you cannot get back. If you just want to date for the sake of dating, then by all means go ahead and waste your time on a pretty face and a fat ass. As for those of you who are serious about finding someone you can spend the rest of your life with, then I suggest you leave the shiny pool boys alone. Adopt a 3-Date Rule: Stop grabbing your ankles for every mother-fucker that tells you that your shirt is pretty. Men are sexual beings. We love to fuck, but you should not be bending over for every Tom, Dick, or Fairy. Wait at least until your third date before you give up the goods. Sex is always better with someone you like and by the end of your third date you should know whether or not you can tolerate being around this person. 20

Back of the Closet

Dating 101 by Rafael Solece A Couch Does Not a Date Make: Sitting on your fucking couch watching a red box movie is not a date. If a guy invites you over to his house, you are not on a date you are in a hostage situation. He is trying to fuck you. He has deemed you worthy enough to fuck, but not worthy enough to been seen in public with. Now don't get it twisted. I love a good game of fuck me on the balcony, but if you are trying to date then say no to the couch and yes to the restaurant. Men like Men: Stop being so indecisive. Be asser tive. Men like it when they can tell you have a penis without pulling down your pants. Make a decision. Tell them what you want. Choose a restaurant. Pick a fucking movie. For Gods sake, tell them what position you like best. No man wants to date someone who can't make a decision. Don't Play Games: The only game we should be playing is naked twister and that is after we get to know each other. Be up front and honest about what you want. Tell the truth to the men you meet. If you only want to fuck, say so. If you want more, be honest and by all means, please do not say what you think they want to hear. The truth of the matter is that we all want something, but telling people what you think they want to hear is not going to get you any closer to your goals. I know that people are not used to the truth but it is refreshing to meet someone who tells you what no else will. I believe that the reason most gay men don't know how to date is because we were not taught how to date and because we have spent most of our lives hiding who we really are from the rest of the world. Dating is about being open and honest. If you do not have experience in honesty then how can you really date someone. I am not saying that these rules are keys to the kingdom or that they are going to help you find your soul mate. What I am saying is that if you do not at least have a road map then you will always be lost. These rules worked for me. Now I'm happily married and I am being faithful to my truth. You have to find your own truth. Maybe some of these rules will help will be a conduit to your happily ever after.

You Can’t Half-Step Into A Successful Relationship One of the most sought after things in most gay men’s lives is to be in a relationship. As you listen to your friends, they will tell you how great it would be to be in a relationship. Looking at the dating/sex sites, profile after profile will state the author is looking some type of a relationship. And many of these men will tell you everything that they are looking for in a mate. But how many of those men possess the qualities that their potential mate is looking for? How do these same men meet their own criteria? It is very easy to say what you will or won’t accept in finding a mate. But how easy is it to present yourself as mate-worthy? So many men have this long list of criteria a potential mate should meet but put no thought into what their potential mate should see when looking back at them. Many men have a funhouse mirror view of themselves where they see themselves without flaws but they can spot every flaw in any man wanting to get to know them. Any flaw that they possess is minimized because they’re a great catch while every flaw that they find in a mate is magnified making him less than acceptable. Most of these same men have a long list of things a man should do to be worthy of their time while the mate is to accept whatever they bring to the table because they consider themselves to be great catches. When we finally find someone worthy of our attention, we half-heartedly enter into the situation, not presenting our best because they might not be worth it. All the while, we expect the other person to bend over backwards to impress us. If we are really honest with ourselves, how many encounters have we sabotaged by holding back? You have to love hard and take chances on those that you see with potential. It is a shame that so many men are looking for great experiences all the while contributing the absolute minimum to the success of the encounter. You can’t expect to win the lottery if you don’t buy your ticket. You can’t expect to enter into a relationship with a great guy if you don’t present him with a great guy to be in a relationship with. 51

You Can’t Half-Step Into A Successful Relationship You’ve been on a date with someone that expects for you to carry the date. They might expect you to pick the place to meet, what movie to watch, to pay, etc. While doing these things is ok, the person might be placing all of the load of the date on you, so that if it is not successful, they can blame you for the bad date. Is it fair for them to blame you when they brought nothing to the experience but themselves? When will we as men put forth the effort to impress a potential mate when this is what we expect our mate to do? Many men invest very little into a relationship but expect the other person to be all-in. If the roles were reversed, would you invest everything into a situation where you see the other person is putting in as little effort as possible? We have to understand that we are not the only ones capable of seeing through someone else’s bullshit. Your potential mate is smarter than you give him credit for. You have to learn at some point that you can’t half-step your way into a relationship just like you wouldn’t let your mate do it. You have to commit yourself to giving yourself fully to the relationship if you want it to be successful. Big Daddy Kane said it best: “Ain’t No Half-Steppin

Leave It On The Floor I know I’m a day late and a dollar short with this, but better late than never. In May, I was told about a movie that had been released to the film festival circuit a couple of years ago. That film was ‘Leave It On The Floor’. A film reminiscent of a cult classic ‘Paris Is Burning’. The film is set in the Ballroom scene of Los Angeles. Produced and directed by Sheldon Larry, Screenplay and Lyrics by Glenn Gaylord, and choreography by Frank Gaston (Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ and Jennifer Lopez’ ‘On The Floor’, the musical brings to life the story of 22 y/o Bradley Lyle, a young man with his personal issues, who is thrown out of his home by his mother (who clearly has her own issues). He finds refuge with members of ball family House of Eminence. The film follows him through about three months of his journey to find himself. Featured in the film are Ephraim Sykes(Brad), Phillip Evelyn (Princess Eminence), Andre Myers (Carter), Miss Barbie-Q( Queen Latina), James Alsop (Eppie) and Hailie Weaver ( Hailie Allure). You will also be treated to a cameo appearance and performance from Ledisi. The film toured the film festival circuit and was spotlighted at the Outfest 2011, the San Francisco International Film Festival and BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in 2012. This movie might not be for everyone, but it provides a view into a world many in our community know very little about. It is very important to be reminded that there are people out there with very different lives from our own. But even in those very different environments, we all share some of the same situations and experiences. The film is available for purchase on Amazon and ITunes. It is also available for rental on ITunes and Netflix. You can also view it for free for a short time on Logotv.com 69

Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl:

How do I deal with my man’s wandering eye. I have been dating my man for about 6 months now and he is constantly looking at other guys. I he will even openly flirt when I’m not around. This past weekend, we went to the mall. While I was trying on a shirt, he began to flirt with the saleswoman. In another store, he was flirting with a guy that was their shopping. When I confronted him about it, he blows me off and states that he is only having fun and nothing will ever come of it. I do believe him but I also know that things can sometimes escalate. People are always getting themselves into situations that they never planned to be in. A friend told me I should give him a taste of his own medicine. When I tried openly flirting in front of him, he acted completely unphased. What else is there for me to do to get him to see how much this behavior bothers me. Dear My Man Lives to Flirt: You may never get him to stop this behavior, but if he respects you, he will learn to control it. I’m sure he has plenty of opportunity to get his flirt on when he is not with you. There is no reason to do it in front of you, especially if he knows you don’t like it. Trying to teach him a lesson won’t work for him because he’s smart enough to see threw what you tried to do. If you want to continue to be with this man. You need to do two things. First, understand that this is something he is going to continue to do. He enjoys it and he sees no harm in doing it. Second, You need to make him understand how this behavior affects you. If he truly cares for you he will adjust his patterns to not affect you. If he does not, He may not really care about your feelings and you’ve got a bigger problem. I suggest you sit him down and explain to him completely how you feel about this behavior. When he does it again after that (and he will) show him that there are consequences to his actions. Mean sometimes understand actions more than they do words. I sure that when he sees that you mean business, he will make the proper adjustments. Just remember, he’s not going to give up this behavior. 87

Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl: While I was visiting a friend, he took me to a sex party in his city. It was off the chain. I have never had that much sex in my life. I have already bought my ticket to visit him again so I can go to the party again. The issue is I’m in a relationship. My sex life was ok before going to that party but now, I find it to be a little boring in comparison to the sex I had at the party. My boyfriend is very vanilla in the bedroom and I really enjoyed how wild it was there. While at the party I made sure everything I did was protected to keep from bringing home any diseases. But I enjoyed that freaky side of myself that was unleashed at the party. How do I handle this with my man? I’m stating to think about the party when I have sex with him.

Dear Party Monster: It seems like you have unleashed your inner freak. As I’m sure, you already know this activity is the fasttrack to the end of your relationship. If your mate is as vanilla as you say they are. I’m also sure they would not be happy to find out about your activity at the sex party or that you’ve already made plans to attend another one. This is one of those test that it sounds like you’ve decided to fail. You know you have no business going to that party and are dead wrong for planning your return. There are diseases you could catch at that party that condoms can’t protect you from So the big question for you is “Are you prepared to lose your relationship over some freaky random sex?”

If you have a question or situation that you would like Aunt Pearl to share some of her knowledge with you, send your letter to askauntpearl@moccamag.com or you can submit the letter from the comments page at www.moccamag.com.
