FRASER FORSEY LOUISE MAY

Barbering has always been more than just cutting hair, it’s a craft, a culture, and a community. As barbers, we thrive not just on skill but on the energy, inspiration, and knowledge we share with one another. That’s why education is the lifeblood of our industry. It’s what pushes us forward, refines our techniques, and ensures that we’re not just keeping up but setting new standards.

At 4Barbers, we believe that education isn’t just for beginners it’s for everyone. Whether you’ve been in the game for one year or twenty, there’s always something new to learn, a fresh perspective to gain, or an innovative technique to refine. The best barbers in the world aren’t just talented; they’re students of the craft for life.

That’s why events like Expo4Barbers and brand-led education sessions are so vital. They’re more than just showcases, they’re opportunities for growth, networking, and collaboration. When we come together at these events, we don’t just elevate our own skills we raise the standard of the industry as a whole. It’s about more than competition; it’s about community.

Now, more than ever, unity in barbering is key. We must continue to support each other, show up for one another, and respect the craft that has given us all so much. Whether you’re a shop owner, a solo barber, an educator, or a brand ambassador, we all play a role in shaping the future of this industry.

So, as you flip through this issue, I challenge you to think about how you can contribute to the growth of barbering. Invest in your education. Attend events. Learn from the best. Share your knowledge. And most importantly, let’s keep pushing forward together.

See you all at the next event!

Raising the Bar in Barbering Education

THE 4BARBERS JOURNEY

Education is the foundation of progress in any industry, and in barbering, it is the catalyst that transforms passion into mastery. When I founded 4Barbers Education in early 2023, my vision was simple: to create an educational platform that empowers barbers at every stage of their career, from apprentices to industry leaders. Today, as the 2024 Australian Modern Barber Awards (AMBA) winner for Education Organisation of the Year, I am incredibly proud of what 4Barbers has achieved—and this is only the beginning.

Creating Australia’s Largest Barbering Expo

In just two years, 4Barbers has redefined the landscape of barbering education. One of our most groundbreaking achievements has been the creation of EXPO4BARBERS, the largest barbering expo ever held in Australia. Bringing together the industry’s brightest talents, leading brands, and aspiring barbers, this event has set a new benchmark for the industry, providing an unparalleled platform for networking, learning, and innovation.

Our commitment to elevating the profession is evident in the extensive educational programs we deliver. Whether through national tours, international guest artist sessions, apprentice Cert 3 Barbering qualifications, hands-on workshops, or lookand-learns, our goal remains the same: to provide barbers with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration they need to excel.

A Legacy Built on Passion & Purpose

A Commitment to Excellence in Education

What sets 4Barbers apart is our unwavering dedication to education that is both comprehensive and accessible. We believe in empowering barbers of all skill levels with opportunities to learn from the best in the business. Our ability to unite a diverse network of educators and artists from around the world has been a game-changer. Over the past two years, we have collaborated with over 20 educators across multiple brands, bringing unique expertise, fresh perspectives, and cutting-edge techniques to our training programs.

These collaborations have solidified 4Barbers as a worldclass educational institution, exposing Australian barbers to global trends and techniques that elevate the industry. The feedback we receive from participants speaks for itself—many credit our programs as the turning point in their careers, enabling them to refine their craft and push the boundaries of what’s possible in barbering.

4Barbers was born from a moment of clarity during an international education tour. My fellow educator and friend, Jono Goodwin, and I were deep in discussion when he made a statement that resonated profoundly: “Everything we do is for the barbers and for the barbering industry.” That realisation became the foundation of our mission—to create a platform that serves the industry in every aspect.

Since then, 4Barbers has grown into an educational powerhouse, forging partnerships with some of the biggest brands in the industry, and salons and barbershops, the latest products, and state-of-the-art tools to barbers across the country.

But 4Barbers is more than just an education provider—it’s a movement and a community. Our dedication to certifying barbers and creating future job opportunities ensures that every individual who engages with our programs is set up for long-term success. Through hands-on workshops, national tours, and international collaborations, we are raising the standard of barbering education and shaping the next generation of industry leaders.

The Future of 4Barbers

At 4Barbers, we believe that the future of barbering lies in the hands of those willing to learn, grow, and push the boundaries of what’s possible. As we look ahead, our focus remains on expanding our educational reach, enhancing our training programs, and continuing to elevate the industry.

Our journey is just beginning. With continued innovation, global collaborations, and a deep commitment to barbering education, we are set to leave an indelible mark on the industry—one barber at a time.

Unparalleled Achievements & Industry Impact

Our contributions to the industry go beyond education; we are actively reshaping the barbering landscape through our initiatives:

• EXPO4BARBERS: The largest barbering event in Australia, setting a new standard for industry gatherings.

• Cert 3 Barbering Enrolment: 4BARBERS is in Partnership with THE BARBER ACADEMY - RTO #41209, training apprentices in Cert 3 across QLD & NSW.

• Job Placement: Facilitated employment for over 100 barbers, ensuring career development and industry sustainability.

Overcoming Challenges & Breaking Barriers

Building 4Barbers was not without its challenges. Convincing the industry’s biggest brands and stakeholders that a barber-led education team could redefine the sector was a monumental task.

But challenges create opportunities, and with an exceptional team, relentless dedication, and an unwavering passion for barbering, we have carved out our place at the forefront of education. Today, we stand as a testament to what can be achieved with vision, determination, and a commitment to excellence.

The best is yet to come.

BAND OF

BROTHERS

Family businesses are the backbone of the hair industry, but few are as dynamic, talented, and downright likeable as the three UK brothers behind MaxOliver. From a single salon in Crowborough to a newly opened flagship in Brighton, Max, Oliver, and Josh have built a men’s hair empire that’s redefining the space between barbering and high-end salon styling. And they’ve done it with sheer skill, graft, and a healthy dose of sibling banter.

The Early Days: A Cut Above the Rest Max, the eldest of the trio, was practically born with scissors in his hand. Cutting hair in his mum’s living room at 13, it wasn’t long before he was the only lad from his school brave enough to enrol in a ladies’ hairdressing course. But while he honed his skills in classic cutting, his real passion lay in men’s hair.

By 16, Max landed his first salon job, and at just 22, he opened the first MaxOliver salon in Crowborough in 2013. “I loved cutting men’s hair, but I hated the ‘conveyor belt’ vibe of traditional barbering,” he explains. “I wanted to create a service where men got more than just a quick clipper job – something tailored, stylish, and personal.”

The MaxOliver Difference

The brothers’ belief in education and technical precision has shaped everything they do. “We specialise in the mechanics of men’s hair,” Oliver explains. “Every stylist who joins us has to master six technical MaxOliver cuts before they’re fully qualified.” It’s an in-depth training system that blends classic barbering with modern hairdressing, producing stylists who can handle everything from fades to flowing, scissor-over-comb work with ease.

This commitment to craft has not gone unnoticed. MaxOliver has taken to the Modern Barber stage at Salon International three years in a row, with Oliver leading the charge. They’ve also been finalists for prestigious awards like Creative HEAD’s Most Wanted and the Hair Magazine Awards, where they won ‘Men’s Specialist Salon’ in 2023. This year, Oliver is up for ‘Men’s Stylist of the Year’ at the 2025 Hair Magazine Awards – an accolade well deserved.

The Brothers Unite

Meanwhile, middle brother Oliver was making waves in ladies’ hairdressing with Toni&Guy. A cutting whiz with a creative edge, he was fast-tracked to work at the London Academy, but when Max asked him to join the family business, it took some persuading. “Oliver is the best cutter I’ve ever worked with,” Max admits. “But I had to promise him that MaxOliver wouldn’t just be a barber shop – it had to be something more.”

With Oliver on board, the philosophy of the brand became clear: they weren’t barbers, they were ‘Men’s Hair Specialists.’ MaxOliver would bridge the gap between traditional barbering and salon precision, offering an experience where men felt seen, styled, and seriously looked after. A welcoming atmosphere, top-tier cuts, and excellent coffee didn’t hurt either.

Then came the youngest of the trio, Josh. Learning under the watchful eyes of his older brothers, he became the first fully trained stylist to graduate from the MaxOliver education program. A natural talent with an effortless charm, Josh has become a client favourite and a key part of the brand’s evolution.

The Big Expansion: Brighton and Beyond

With thriving salons in Crowborough, Tunbridge Wells, and Lewes, 2024 was the brand’s busiest year yet. But the biggest milestone came with the opening of their new flagship in Brighton. Spanning four floors, the space isn’t just a salon – it’s a statement. Two floors are dedicated to cutting, one to photography (perfect for their ever-growing social media presence), and the top floor is home to the MaxOliver Academy, their first dedicated education hub.

“For years, we’ve been developing our own education,” Max says. “Brighton gives us a chance to take it to the next level, training stylists from all over the industry in the MaxOliver way.”

A Brand with Heart

Despite their rapid growth, the brothers have never lost sight of their roots. Charity work is a big part of what they do, with the team raising over £900 for Great Ormond Street Hospital and £600 for Movember last year alone. They also continue to recruit from their own talent pool, bringing in graduates through their in-house training program and mentoring them into full-fledged stylists. Out of 22 trainees since 2013, 17 are still with the company – a testament to their loyalty and leadership.

Their latest product re-launch – featuring Soufflé, Matte Texture Dust, Sulphate-Free Aloe Vera Shampoo, and more – proves they’re not just about haircuts but a full grooming experience. And with Oliver set to host the Modern Barber stage at Barber Connect again in 2025, their industry presence is only growing stronger.

The Secret to Success

What makes MaxOliver so special? Sure, their technical excellence is undeniable, and their eye for style is razor-sharp. But ask anyone who’s sat in one of their chairs, and they’ll tell you it’s the brothers themselves. There’s no ego, no pretence – just a trio of genuinely passionate, down-toearth blokes who love what they do.

“In a family business, there’s trust, loyalty, and a level of honesty you can’t fake,” Max says. “We push each other, challenge each other, and ultimately make each other better.”

With Brighton now up and running, an ever-growing client base, and a reputation as one of the UK’s top men’s specialist salons, the future of MaxOliver looks sharper than ever. And with these three at the helm, you can bet there’s plenty more to come.

Spotlight on Trae Tane

AKA TAPER TRAE

Trae Tane is a 27 year old Māori kid from a small town called Whitianga, on the East Coast of the North Island in NZ. In May 2023, he made the move to Australia to pursue and elevate his skillset/career within the barbering industry, which has proven to be the best decision he has made for himself thus far.

When Trae’s not cutting hair, you’ll find him in the gym, on a touch field/basketball court, working on his personal brand or filming/ editing content.

Louise May, the Editor of Mocha Barber, chats with Trae about his journey in the barbering industry.

When and how did you discover a passion for hair?

Since a kid I’ve always had a “thing” for hair. Back in school days , me and my boys would meet up at each other’s houses beforehand and spend almost an hour styling our hair, using straighteners and dominate wax to complete our looks, ha-ha. I started cutting my own hair around 13 and by age 15-16, had started cutting the boys. We had a saying we lived by, which was “look good , feel good, perform good” and it started with our hair. I guess you could say I naturally fell into barbering without realising it. In 2019, I decided to pursue barbering as a career by enrolling at Cut Above Academy in Auckland, NZ, obtaining my certification. Since then, I haven’t looked back. I believe that a haircut/hairstyle says a lot about a person and how they conduct/care for themselves. I also believe that with social media, being more prevalent than ever, first impressions are EVERYTHING.

What do you do today?

I currently live and work in Rockhampton, a small town in North Queensland. Here, I manage one of the many HMB Barbers stores in which I have both a freshly qualified and apprentice barber under my wing.

You were a Finalist at the 2024 AMBA’s. That’s a massive achievement! Tell us about your collection and what inspired it?

Thank you Lou, I appreciate that. Firstly, I want to thank Fraser Forsey for not only the opportunity, but the push to compete. This was the first competition I’ve entered in my career and if it weren’t for Frasers support and backing, I wouldn’t have entered at all, let alone become a finalist. If I’m being honest, I’m not quite sure how I made the finals. I was unprepared as anyone could be for a competition, but somehow made it work. The inspiration for my collection came from haircuts I used to see around when I was younger but with a bit of a “modern” twist.

“WE HAD A SAYING WE LIVED BY, WHICH WAS ‘LOOK GOOD , FEEL GOOD, PERFORM GOOD’ AND IT STARTED WITH OUR HAIR.” TRAE TANE

You are educating with 4Barbers, tell us about this?

Again, that’s all thanks to Fraser. He approached me a couple of months after I had started with HMB about the opportunity to become an educator and I took it with both hands. I had always been under the impression that a barber educator was someone that was in a classroom all day everyday teaching. Once he explained to me what 4Barbers does and their purpose, I was sold. My goal within the education space is not just to teach the younger generation of barbers/apprentices how to do a haircut, but also the importance of how to conduct/present themselves in AND outside of the barbershop. Professionalism, self-presentation, things of that nature.

What tools do you use?

Staying honest, my toolkit is a bit of a pick ‘n mix. I use the BaByliss Pro FX One Lo Pro clipper for debulking. The upgraded motor combined with the new design of the blades AND replaceable batteries makes removing bulk like a hot knife through butter. For fading and detailing, I use the new JRL Onyx clipper. They’re extremely comfortable to use, lightweight and the fade blades are incredible, leaving you with a super soft, blurry finish. For the line ups, I’m currently running the Style Craft Sabers. Don’t think I need to say much about them other than it’s been my only trimmer for the last 2 years. The results speak for themselves

Who inspires you?

First person that comes to mind is Barber Josh O.P, who I was fortunate enough to be taught and mentored by, alongside a group of extremely talented barbers last October at the Perspective Tour in Brisbane. Off the back of that, the whole group that I was with that week inspires me too. From meeting everyone on day 1 to seeing them all go from strength to strength, leaping out of their comfort zone, it lets me know everyone and anyone can achieve their dreams. My family are also a massive driving force for me. Knowing what we’ve been through, watching them keep pushing through life and never stopping for anything, they’re a massive inspiration to me, if not the biggest. Last but not least, people that continue to push boundaries, people that are ambitious, have goals & don’t let anything get in the way, the ball runners. They keep me inspired to do more.

What’s on the agenda for the next 12 months?

Without giving too much away, this year is going to be massive. I’ll be competing multiple times, one of which will be at the 4Barbers Expo Barber Battle on the Gold Coast in May. Alongside that, I’ll also be making my debut as an Educator this year which is extremely exciting! Outside of barbering, I have a few other BIG things coming this year, but we’ll keep that quiet about that for now...

FAST FAVES...

Fave Food: Anything my Mum cooks!

Fave Drink: Sailor Jerry’s spiced rum with Coke Zero, short glass, plenty of ice.

Fave Holiday destination: Can’t go wrong with my lil slice of paradise back home on the East coast.

Current music rotation: Again, a pick n mix much like my toolkit. One minute I’ll be listening to the Temptations, next it’s Biggie Smalls or 50 cent. My music taste is eclectic, I go 0 to 100 real quick!

Fave Movie: I have 2 - Coach Carter is all time but Stomp the Yard brings me so much nostalgia, I know every word to every scene!

What am I binge watching/reading: Admittedly, I’m the worst person to ask about books I don’t read, but that’s something I’m changing this year. I don’t tend to watch many shows as I’m always up to something, but when I’ve got some down time, I’m watching WWE, NBA or NRL.

RAPID RINSE HAIRDRESSING HAND SHOWER BY JOIKEN

BARBER TO THE STARS FRANK CICCONE IS MAKING A BUZZ FOR AUSTRALIANS LIVING WITH BLOOD CANCER

The Leukaemia Foundation is thrilled to announce internationally acclaimed barber and men’s hairdresser

Frank Ciccone as an official Hair Ambassador of its iconic World’s Greatest Shave campaign for 2025.

The Melbourne salon owner, who was recently inducted into the Australian Modern Barber Awards Hall of Fame, is set to bring plenty of style to this year’s campaign, with his business Hair by Ciccone crowned International Salon of the Year at the 2024 Social Media Hair and Beauty Awards.

With 30 years of industry experience under his belt – including working with a star-studded list of clientele, from beloved bands like INXS to sporting legends like Tim Cahill – this year, Frank is volunteering his razor-sharp skills to shave, cut and colour participants’ hair and raise critical funds for the 150,000 Australians living with blood cancer. “Many people have sadly been affected or know someone who has had cancer,” Frank Ciccone said.

“My aim is to get more exposure in my community and help create awareness about blood cancer, and the World’s Greatest Shave, whilst encouraging people to sign up to shave, cut, or colour this year, or donate to someone who is.”

Meeting new people, building relationships and welcoming returning clients to his salon every day, are aspects of his job that Frank thoroughly enjoys. But over the course of his career, it’s also meant he’s felt the devastating impact of blood cancer in his community. “I’ve had friends and clients who have sadly passed away from blood cancer, in particular leukaemia,” Mr Ciccone said.

“So, to put my hands up and help out in this way to raise awareness and funds for families affected by this disease, that’s what it’s all about.”

In his role as Hair Ambassador, Frank was proud to kick off this year’s World’s Greatest Shave by delivering the first shave of the campaign season. Melbourne father David Leslie teamed up with Frank who shaved his entire head in support of David’s 13-year-old stepdaughter Maisy who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in June and is currently receiving treatment.

With Australia experiencing a 40 per cent increase in blood cancer incidence in children in the past two decades, and with blood cancers set to become the most prevalent cancer in all age groups by 2035, Leukaemia Foundation CEO Chris Tanti said the organisation was calling on Australians like Frank and David to throw their support behind this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. “Every day, 55 Australians will hear the devastating words ‘you have blood cancer’,” Mr Tanti said. “A further 17 people will lose their life to blood cancer every day in this country. That’s 17 mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, siblings and grandparents. Seventeen families that lose a loved one.

“By signing up to this year’s World’s Greatest Shave, you can choose to shave, cut or colour your hair in support of Australians impacted by blood cancer with every dollar you raise helping to provide much-needed support and services to patients and their loved ones”.

Funds raised by generous fundraisers will also help to make significant strides towards finding more targeted treatment options for Australians with a blood cancer diagnosis, and fund game-changing research and advocacy, with the goal of achieving zero lives lost to blood cancer by 2035.

Sign up to shave, cut or colour your hair in support of Australians facing blood cancer, or donate directly to the World’s Greatest Shave campaign, at worldsgreatestshave.com Alternatively, if you would like to support Frank’s World’s Greatest Shave you can donate by scanning the QR Code! www.worldsgreatestshave.com

Five O’clock shadow- this timeless look is a classic and lives up to its name, a short beard referring to growing back in a day. This is one of the only beard styles that suits just about everyone! Sported by celebrities such as David Beckham and Robert Pattison, this looks requires perfect timing to get it looking just right.

Corporate Beard- this is a beard style we have saw increasing in popularity towards the end of 2024 and we know will be a huge hit for 2025. The corporate beard is perfect for anyone wanting to make a statement. The style is very angular and exudes authority and power, with the beard being balanced on each side of the face to avoid any hairs being out of place.

Ducktail Beard- the ducktail beard is a V-shaped beard, wider at the chin and narrower at the sides. The style dates back to the 50’s and is the perfect blend of undone and polished. This classic style makes a statement and suits a number of different face shapes. This style is very versatile and is super easy to upkeep making it an amazing look for 2025.

Classic Full Beard- a beard trend that will never go out of style, this is a symbol of masculinity and confidence. This look is dense and long all over with an extremely easy upkeep. The full beard can be difficult to achieve for many, however, for those who can, a stylist is your best friend for the upkeep. Meet 2024 AMBA Best Customer Care Winners GUYS GROOMING

In the heart of Perth’s CBD, where the pace is fast and professionalism is paramount, there’s a sanctuary dedicated to the modern man—Guys Grooming. More than just a barbershop, this premium grooming lounge redefines what it means to look and feel your best, offering an experience that blends luxury, precision, and unparalleled customer care.

Owned and operated by dynamic duo Rebecca and Nathan Ahern, Guys Grooming was born from a vision to create a space where men could access high-quality grooming services in an environment tailored specifically for them. In a world where self-care is often synonymous with female-focused spaces, Guys Grooming has rewritten the script, proving that attention to detail and a personalised experience are just as crucial for men.

Their commitment to excellence was recently recognised at the 2024 Australian Modern Barber Awards, where Guys Grooming took home the prestigious Best Customer Care award. This accolade reflects the business’s dedication to crafting a seamless and sophisticated client experience, from the moment a client walks through the door to their final finishing touches.

The Ultimate Grooming Experience

Step into Guys Grooming, and you’re instantly welcomed into a haven of masculine sophistication. The space is stylish yet unpretentious, designed to be luxurious without feeling overdone. With 430 square meters of purpose-built grooming excellence, it’s a world away from the traditional barbershop, offering an experience that is as refined as it is comfortable.

Understanding that a truly exceptional grooming service goes beyond the cut, Guys Grooming places immense value on education and tailored advice. From product recommendations to at-home grooming tips, their team ensures every client leaves not only looking great but with the knowledge to maintain their style between visits.

A Space Designed for the Modern Man

Creating an environment where men feel comfortable is at the core of Guys Grooming’s ethos. Their interior is deliberately masculine yet inviting—think deep tones, rich textures, and refined lighting that exudes understated luxury. There are no floral arrangements or over-the-top décor choices, just a space designed to make clients feel at ease while receiving world-class grooming services.

The journey begins in their private bar and lounge area, where clients are greeted by a dedicated reception team and invited to enjoy a complimentary drink. Whether it’s a coffee to kickstart the day or something stronger to unwind, this touch of hospitality sets the tone for an experience unlike any other.

What follows is not just a haircut, shave, or skincare treatment—it’s a service delivered with precision and care. Their team of 17 expert professionals, spanning barbers, hairdressers, and beauty therapists, are highly trained not only in their craft but in providing a customer-first approach that keeps clients coming back time and again.

Precision, Professionalism, and Personalisation

Guys Grooming has perfected the balance between efficiency and indulgence. Their seamless service delivery is powered by behind-thescenes coordination, ensuring that every moment of the client’s visit flows smoothly. One standout feature is their use of body-worn pagers, a gamechanger that allows the team to communicate without disrupting the atmosphere. This means no awkward interruptions—just an experience that feels effortless and entirely focused on the client.

Beyond the barber chair, their grooming

includes 12

and bathroom facilities. Whether it’s a simple cut or a full

and client comfort in mind.

Customer Care That Goes the Extra Mile

What truly sets Guys Grooming apart is their unwavering commitment to customer care. Winning Best Customer Care at the Australian Modern Barber Awards wasn’t just about what happens inside the shop—it’s about how they make their clients feel before, during, and after each visit.

They’ve made booking easy, offering multiple touchpoints including online scheduling, social media communication, email, and phone bookings. Clients receive friendly SMS reminders for upcoming appointments, ensuring they never miss their next grooming session. After their visit, new clients receive a personalised followup message, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to building lasting relationships.

The loyalty program is another testament to their customer-first approach. Regular clients are rewarded on their 10th visit with free services, a way of giving back to those who continue to trust Guys Grooming with their grooming needs.

The Future of Guys Grooming

With a stellar reputation, a dedicated client base, and a commitment to raising the bar, the future for Guys Grooming is brighter than ever.

Their ethos—“To build confidence through professional grooming services, products, and advice in a comfortable and customer-focused environment, built specifically for men”—continues to guide them as they look toward even greater success.

Winning Best Customer Care was not just an award; it was a validation of everything Guys Grooming stands for. It’s proof that their client-first philosophy, innovative service delivery, and unwavering commitment to excellence make them a leader in the Australian men’s grooming industry.

So, whether it’s a fresh cut, a precision shave, or a moment of selfcare, Guys Grooming isn’t just about grooming—it’s about confidence, experience, and impeccable service. And in Perth, there’s simply no place like it.

Adapting and Innovating in Challenging Times

Success doesn’t come without challenges, and Guys Grooming has faced its fair share. The economic downturn, rising interest rates, and the ongoing work-from-home trend have all impacted foot traffic in the CBD. But rather than standing still, they innovated.

One of their key strategies was launching a pre-purchase package campaign, allowing clients to buy two facials or massages and receive a third free. This not only provided immediate revenue but also kept clients engaged with the brand.

Additionally, Guys Grooming expanded their service offerings by introducing Hair Systems, a game-changing solution for men experiencing hair loss. This premium service brought in a new demographic while also allowing the business to offer higher wages to its highly trained staff, further cementing their position as a leader in the industry.

TWO JOURNEYS, ONE VISION!

In an industry where skill, culture, and community intersect, Kalib Monaei and Jayden Waaka are redefining what it means to be barbers. More than just haircutters, they are educators, creatives, and storytellers using their craft to inspire the next generation.

Kalib’s story began at just 15 years old, drawn to the rhythm and energy of his local barbershop in Springfield. What started as a routine visit soon became a lifelong passion. Now, with eight years of experience under his belt, he has managed multiple barbershops, taken on a key role in industry education, and continues to champion diversity as a proud First Nations Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Papua New Guinean barber.

For Jayden, creativity has always been at the forefront. Born in Rotorua, New Zealand, he explored various artistic avenues, from music to media, before finding his calling in barbering. His journey began with a single conversation with his school counsellor, which led him to Tommy Guns the very next day. Today, he is not only a 4B educator but also a signed musician and media professional, seamlessly blending his passions to create a unique impact.

Both of them share a passion for innovation, culture, and pushing the boundaries of traditional barbering. Their diverse backgrounds and perspectives allow them to approach their craft with a fresh and dynamic outlook, bridging the gap between technical skill and creative expression. Their goal is to ensure that barbering remains not just a trade, but an evolving art form that continues to inspire generations.

From the Shop Floor to the Global Stage

The duo’s rise in the barbering world has been anything but conventional. Kalib’s early career at Lole’s Barbershop in Springfield laid the foundation for his craft, but he quickly realised that growth meant pushing beyond the shop’s four walls. Inspired by a chance encounter with the Andis team, he pursued education, mentorship, and industry events, with pivotal figures like Jordan Aumua and Jono Goodwin guiding his journey.

Jayden’s career followed a similarly ambitious path. His early years at Tommy Guns saw him rack up multiple accolades, including Apprentice of the Year and Barber of the Year. His skills took him to Canada to compete internationally and later to the Barber of the Year finals in Newcastle, securing third place. His passion for education, driven by a desire to fill industry gaps, has since led him to a prominent role at Tommy Guns’ head office, where he continues to shape the future of barbering.

A Friendship Built on Growth

Though their paths crossed at Tommy Guns Carindale, their real bond formed outside of work. A car ride to a Brisbane Lions event became the turning point in their friendship, leading to a connection built on shared ambition and an unspoken understanding of what it takes to succeed.

Since then, Kalib and Jayden have worked closely, constantly pushing each other to reach new heights. Their friendship is rooted in a shared work ethic, mutual respect, and a commitment to uplifting those around them. They thrive on collaboration, knowing that by working together, they can create something far greater than they could achieve alone.

Educators with a Purpose

As educators for 4Barbers, Kalib and Jayden are passionate about mentorship and passing down knowledge to the next generation. “Education is about more than just technique—it’s about building relationships, inspiring confidence, and ensuring the future of our industry,” Kalib explains.

For Jayden, the influence of his mentor, Jono Goodwin, played a crucial role in his decision to become an educator. “I saw firsthand how proper mentorship could transform careers. That’s why I’m passionate about guiding young barbers—it’s about giving back and making sure they have the support they need.”

They believe education should go beyond teaching haircutting skills—it should prepare barbers for business ownership, customer service, and self-development. Their goal is to create well-rounded professionals who can thrive in all aspects of the industry.

Not About Us: A Movement in the Making

Their desire to leave a lasting impact led to the creation of Not About Us, a media brand that started as a podcast but has since evolved into a larger mission. The idea was born from a late-night conversation, with Kalib’s determination pushing it into reality. “I told Jayden, ‘I’m starting a podcast—you can join me or not, but I’m doing this,’” Kalib recalls. That no-excuses mindset set everything in motion.

Since launching, the podcast has taught them one crucial lesson: building something meaningful requires sacrifice. “We were running on two hours of sleep some nights, just grinding to make this happen,” Jayden admits. But the effort is paying off. Their mission is clear—to create a platform that amplifies voices in the barbering community and beyond.

A Legacy Beyond the Microphone

The rapid realisation of the extensive effort and sacrifice required to establish a business has been pivotal. Recognising the combined potential of their partnership, they understood that leveraging every opportunity

was crucial. This underscores the importance of proactive action—without execution, aspirations remain unfulfilled, and time passes without progress.

From the very beginning, Not About Us was envisioned as more than just a podcast. While launching a podcast provided a strong foundation and a relevant entry point into the industry, their long-term vision has always extended beyond it. With the completion of NAU Podcast Season 1, they are now focused on expanding into new content concepts that align with their mission.

Their core values—making noise, bringing the community together, and integrating culture into everything they do—drive every project they take on. This is why they are excited to evolve beyond the podcast, exploring new ways to engage, inspire, and contribute to the industry in meaningful ways.

Looking Ahead: The Next 12 Months

The future for Kalib and Jayden is about expansion. With plans to spotlight barbershops in Brisbane before taking their movement nationwide, their goal is to build a space where barbers can share their stories, collaborate, and inspire one another.

Beyond content, they are working on mentorship programmes aimed at young barbers who need direction and guidance. By partnering with established names in the industry, they plan to create workshops, events, and digital courses that focus on skill-building, business acumen, and personal growth. Their commitment to education extends beyond cutting hair—it’s about instilling confidence and resilience in the next generation.

They also have ambitions of collaborating with major brands and bringing industry leaders together through panel discussions, live events, and documentary-style storytelling. “There are so many voices in our industry that go unheard. We want to be the ones who bring those stories to the forefront,” Jayden shares.

Storytelling has always been at the heart of their cultures—passing down knowledge for future generations. Now, they’re bringing that tradition into the barbering industry, creating a “new media” space where young barbers can learn from those who have paved the way before them.

“At the end of the day,” Jayden says, “it’s not about us. It’s about creating a legacy for the future, ensuring that the industry continues to grow, innovate, and uplift those who come after us.”

With the next 12 months set to bring even greater opportunities, Kalib and Jayden are ready to push boundaries and cement their place as not just barbers, but cultural pioneers. Whether through education, media, or mentorship, their mission is clear: to leave the industry better than they found it.

From YouTube to the AMBAs: The Evolution of

JARROD PROSPER

From cutting hair for fun in a mate’s backyard to becoming a two-time AMBA Finalist, Jarrod Prosper’s journey has been anything but ordinary. What started as a simple hobby quickly turned into an all-consuming passion that led him to train professionally, compete at the highest level, and build a career he loves. His story is one of dedication, creativity, and resilience—proving that talent and hard work can take you anywhere.

Along the way, he has faced challenges, from learning the ropes as a self-taught barber to stepping onto the competition stage, and even balancing his career with personal hardships. Despite it all, he continues to push himself, striving to grow both behind the chair and within the industry. He’s not just about cutting hair—he’s about pushing limits, trying new things, and staying hungry for what’s next. With so much ahead, Jarrod is proving that this is only the beginning.

We caught up with him to talk about where it all began, the lessons he’s learned, and what’s next for him.

What inspired you to join the barbering industry?

My interest in barbering started with YouTube. From around 13 or 14, I was hooked on watching haircut tutorials from barbers like 360Jeezy, MartyBlendz, and Chris Bossio. I loved how each barber had their own style and way of doing things, and that got me experimenting with my own hair.

It wasn’t long before I started cutting my mate’s hair, and before I knew it, I was cutting regularly. My parents saw how passionate I was and encouraged me to pursue it professionally, which led me to move from Kempsey to Brisbane and enrol at The Barber Academy.

What do you love most about barbering?

For me, it comes down to two things—creativity and connection. I love the creative side of barbering, from perfecting techniques to experimenting with different styles and pushing boundaries in competitions. Being able to express myself through my work, whether in a shop or in a competition setting, is something I really enjoy.

Then there’s the connection side. Barbering isn’t just about haircuts; it’s about the relationships we build. Whether it’s clients opening up or just using their time in the chair to relax, I value the trust that people put in me. The best part is watching clients walk out of the shop with confidence.

How has competing helped shape your career?

Competing has been a massive part of my growth. My first competition was in Newcastle—I had 30 minutes to complete a haircut on stage in front of a panel of judges. It was nerve-wracking, and the cut didn’t go exactly as planned, but the experience was invaluable. It made me hungry to improve and sharpen my skills. In 2023, I entered the AMBA Junior Category for the first time, working with The Barber Academy and photographer Leigh Winsor to shoot my collection. Seeing my work recognised as a finalist was a surreal moment. It pushed me to explore more of the creative side of barbering and keep improving my craft.

Tell us about your 2024 AMBA collection. This collection was personal. I put it together entirely on my own—with a bedsheet taped to my garage wall, $80 box lights, my mother-in-law’s camera, and my best mates helping me behind the scenes. I even cut my own hair as part of it.

A few days before the finalist announcements, my mum passed away. She had seen me working on this collection, which made it even more meaningful. When I was named a finalist again, it wasn’t just about the award—it was about the journey and the people who had supported me along the way.

What brought you back home to Kempsey?

Family has always been my priority. In early 2024, my mum had been battling cancer for over a year, and I knew I needed to be closer to her. Moving back home just felt right.

I found my place at Broken Hearts Barbershop in Port Macquarie, which was an easy transition because Chris (the owner) and his wife Jody were already connected to the same industry circles. At the same time, I kept working from my home studio in Kempsey, looking after my long-term clients. It’s been the perfect balance—staying close to family while continuing to build my career.

What has been a standout moment in your career so far?

Running education nights for Gareth Philpott and The Barber Academy in Just Cuts salons across NSW. I got to travel to Grafton and Armidale to teach fading techniques, and it was a completely new experience for me.

Teaching others made me realise how much I had learned myself. It also gave me a real appreciation for education in the industry, and now I want to get more involved in mentoring and training future barbers.

What are your go-to tools?

BaBylissPRO clippers, trimmers, and shavers are my staples. The performance and reliability are unmatched, and I love what they’ve done with the FXONE range.

For scissors, I’ve always used Excellent Edges, but I recently added a pair of Mizutani Precisioners, and they’ve been a game changer.

When it comes to styling, the Dyson blow dryer and Crispy Club products are my go-to for getting that perfect finish.

Who in the industry inspires you?

There are so many. Gareth from The Barber Academy has been instrumental in shaping my career. I also take a lot of inspiration from UK barbers like Sam Rascals and Oscar Blends—especially their approach to branding and social media. They blend technical skill with personality, which is something I respect. It’s not just about the cuts; it’s about building a brand that people connect with.

What’s next for you?

This year is all about pushing myself to new levels. I’m planning to enter the 2025 AMBAs, and I want to push my creativity even further experimenting with lighting, textures, and new styles in my next collection. Education is another big focus. I’d love to keep working with The Barber Academy and take on more teaching opportunities, whether in group settings or one-on-one mentoring. I’ve realised how much I enjoy sharing knowledge, and I want to keep giving back to the industry. I’m also looking at building my social media presence. Content creation is such a huge part of our industry now, and I want to focus more on tutorials, transformations, and behind-the-scenes content.

Final thoughts?

Right now, I just want to keep learning, growing, and taking on new challenges. The industry is always evolving, and I want to keep pushing myself to stay ahead, whether that’s through competitions, education, or content creation. Being able to do what I love every day, connect with people, and continuously refine my craft—it doesn’t get better than that. I’m excited for what’s ahead and to see where this journey takes me next.

DR. ORDERED JUST WHAT THE

Barbering isn’t just about cutting hair—it’s about connection, hustle, and building something bigger than yourself. And if there’s one barber who’s mastered all three, it’s Dr Tama.

Growing up in Otara, South Auckland, Tama didn’t have it easy. But what he did have was a drive to level up, a passion for selfcare, and a knack for the game. From learning to cut his mates’ hair to running a full studio out of his garage during lockdown, he turned a side hustle into a career, proving that with skill, hard work, and smart branding, anything’s possible.

Now, with a booming business, a massive social media following, and some big things in the works—including presenting at EXPO4BARBERS— Tama is sharing the blueprint that helped him go from grinding in his garage to becoming one of the most talked-about barbers in the industry. In this Q&A, we get into his journey, and his advice for barbers looking to build their personal brand.

Tell us about you...

My name’s Tama. I’m 25 in August and I grew up in southeast Auckland in a place called Otara which is widely considered ‘the hood’ by many Aucklanders. Grew up poor, single mum for most of childhood. Middle child of 3 boys.

How did you discover barbering?

Always been a man of self-care. I like looking after myself, having a clean haircut, shave, eyebrows etc. I thought having the skill of cutting my mates hair was too good to pass up. I ended up asking my barber at the time to recommend some tools to get started, he took me to go buy them and the rest is history.

Tell us your barbering journey to date?

At 19, I was working a warehouse job but wanted a real career. I applied for the police, thinking it was a ‘safe’ option, but after failing my third attempt, I saw it as God’s way of telling me I needed to follow barbering. I enrolled at Cut Above Academy, starting two months late during the 2020 lockdown. Despite being behind, I caught up in two weeks, finished the course in just over three months, and landed a job—after exaggerating my experience. I worked there for 1.5 years on an hourly wage, but even with 20 extra hours a week cutting in my garage, it wasn’t enough. I moved to my mate’s shop to learn the business side as a sole trader. It was a tough transition. My old clientele didn’t follow, and some days, I made just $12 after tax. I worked harder—first in, last out, constantly on my phone promoting myself. Then another lockdown hit on my 21st birthday, shutting down the shop. Against the rules (and my mum’s wishes), I kept cutting in my garage, starting with a few clients a week. Within weeks, I was running a full solo studio, doing 50 cuts a week, with some clients paying hundreds just to secure a spot.

This was when my social media took off. I refined my services and became known for quality, consistency, good chat, and being ALWAYS AVAILABLE—I’d take bookings as late as 2am.

After lockdown, going back to the shop for longer hours and less money made me realise I needed my own space. After saving up, I built my private studio in my garage and went full-time in Nov 2022. In my first week, I made more than I ever had, but I knew I could do better. I doubled down on social media, seeing other barbers post content and thinking, I can do this way better. That’s when Doctor Tama was born—a name inspired by the running joke that I ‘perform surgery’ on my clients. The rest is history.

What do you love about it?

I owe everything I have to this craft. The actual practicality of barbering is good and the business experience I’ve gained from it is priceless but the people, connections & network I get from it are some of the best things I’ve taken from it. I’ve met lifelong friends, built strong business partnerships and connections and it has opened doors that I would’ve never known about. Let alone the personal development & challenge I’ve had throughout this journey. It has completely forced me to grow as a man, person, businessman and artist. It pushed me out of my comfort and that’s a gift in itself.

You have built an amazing personal brand on TikTok and Insta, through content creation and huge following on your social platforms; can you tell us all about this?

My journey on social media has been up and down. My favourite way to think about it is by comparing it to bamboo. (Stay with me) When bamboo is planted, it can barely be seen for the first few years as it builds extensive root systems underground. After 5 years it explodes 90 feet in the air within 6 weeks. Since I was 15, I wanted to do social media as a job/career pathway. I feel like I was made for it. But when I finished high school, I felt like I had nothing to offer the world from a content perspective. In other words, I was scared to start and afraid of what people would think. And so, I worked on myself and went through my life over the next few years trying to figure who I am as a man and what I stood for. Falling into barbering helped that and broadened my perspective. I studied marketing and social media content relentlessly, paid for courses out of my own pocket, invested in mentors to learn and still didn’t start. It took me years to start. And after I did, it was the closest thing to real life overnight success I have ever experienced and for good reason. It worked out this way because I took all that time to build up myself, find out who I really am and what matters to me.

Using everything I learnt about marketing and branding I marketed myself. Raw, authentic and unfiltered me. The people of social media either like it or they don’t but people follow people. Change that takes years to build up before it happens all at once in the same way bamboo grows.

You are going to be presenting at EXPO4BARBERS, can you tell us all about this?

I will be presenting my Social Media Blueprint; I’ll be sharing my story and strategies that I used to leverage social media to grow my personal brand and get fully booked. I’ll also be teaching how barbers can do exactly the same.

Can you tell us about your free community and the groups you have created?

The Creators Vault is a free community full of like-minded people all with the same goal in mind. To create engaging content that builds an audience so that they can use social media as a means of business. It’s basically a place where I teach everything, I have learnt to give people everything they need to capitalise on the digital gold mine that is Social Media. It gives completely free and practical advice to a wide range of people from someone that has never posted before to someone who just wants to elevate their game. We also offer a paid version that covers more in-depth strategy, viewer psychology and monetisation too, to fully equip anyone with everything they need to be successful on social media.

What is one key piece of advice that you can offer barbers who are wanting to build their personal brand?

As corny as it sounds, be yourself and do you. Your biggest point of difference is that you are yourself, literally 1 of 1. So why copy anyone else. Focus on who you are and what you stand for, your content will follow suit, and your audience will come to you.

We understand that you are going to be doing some work with the boys from Trybe. How do you see that brand aligning to yours and what drew you to their culture?

Just like myself and the brand I’ve built over the past year, Trybe is all about innovating the industry and giving back. And that is exactly what drew me to them. I like who they are behind the brand and what they’re trying to do with the company and our visions for the direction of the industry align very much so. Very excited to see where this goes.

Any other exciting plans for 2025?

I have a few things in the works, and I can’t say too much but I have a handful of very exciting projects on ways.

BULLETPROOF BARBERING

The Holistic Future of Barber Education at Hearts & Minds

The barbering industry has never been just about cutting hair. At its core, it’s about service, it’s about connection with our team and our clients, creativity in our skill, discipline in how we carry ourselves and takes a whole lot of mental resilience.

At Hearts & Minds Barber & Academy, they’ve taken this belief to the next level, combining their individual strengths and experiences with collective learning and development to redefine what barbering education looks like.

With their CEO, Danny Banford, bringing 12 years of elite military experience—from the Royal Marine Commandos and British Special Forces to the Australian Army—he carries lessons that can’t be bought. They’ve combined that discipline with over 40 years of expertise in the hair industry and more than two decades of running successful shops.

They’ve lived the highs, endured the lows and faced the same pressures that many barbers experience today. Now, they’re strapping on the boots to help others navigate their own journey.

Whether you’re an independent barber or leading your own team, they can help.

Danny, alongside his business partners Laura Banford and Jake Putan— both highly sought after, established and award-winning barbers—have aligned their vision for a mission that goes beyond just technical skills. It’s about the battlefield of the heart and mind, shaping not only the barbers behind the chair but the men they serve.

They are passionate about enriching people’s experiences, helping them build emotional intelligence, and shifting the limiting belief patterns that hold them back. Laura is a certified NLP coach and Jake facilitates his message of mental performance through nutrition, mindfulness and breathwork. Together, they’ve combined these skills to create something unique for the barbering industry: a holistic education program that prepares barbers not just for their craft, but for life itself.

INTRODUCING THE BULLETPROOF BARBERING IMMERSION COURSE

Step into the Bulletproof Barbering Immersion Course—a two-day intensive experience designed to equip barbers with more than just technical skills. It’s a transformative experience that instills the mindset, habits, and resilience needed to thrive in all aspects of life and business, especially at this time.

Because at the end of the day, if we don’t take care of ourselves, how can we show up fully for our families, our teams, and our clients?

The Bulletproof Philosophy: Showing barbers what they’re capable of! Too often, barbering education focuses solely on technique. But success in this industry isn’t just about how tight your fades are or how sharp your scissor work is. It’s about longevity, sustainability, optimised workflow and consistently showing up as your best self. At Hearts & Minds, they’re rewriting the script with their Bulletproof framework—an approach that integrates six key pillars to help barbers build a career and life that truly lasts.

Fitness: The Foundation of Longevity

Barbering is physically demanding. Long hours on your feet, repetitive movements, and poor posture can lead to burnout and chronic injuries. That’s why functional movement, strength training, and mobility work are a core part of the program. They teach barbers how to condition their bodies so they can stay in the game for decades, free from pain.

Bulletproof Mindset: Mental Toughness for an Unstoppable Career

A strong mindset is the difference between a barber who merely survives and one who thrives. They equip barbers with practical mindset strategies to enhance resilience, confidence, and clarity. From handling difficult clients to breaking through limiting beliefs, this training ensures barbers can perform at their peak—no matter what challenges arise.

Nutrition: Fuelling Performance Behind the Chair

Energy crashes, inflammation, and poor eating habits are common in our industry. The Bulletproof Immersion course includes nutrition education, covering meal prepping for busy days, hydration strategies, and supplements that enhance focus, endurance, and recovery.

Finances & Investment: The Path to Wealth in Barbering

Barbering isn’t just a job—it’s a business. Yet, too many talented barbers struggle financially because they’ve never been taught money management, pricing strategies, or investment basics. Through the partnerships with local professionals, they host sessions that give practical guidance on budgeting, saving, and investing so barbers can achieve financial security and create multiple income streams beyond the chair.

Personal Development: Becoming the Best Version of Yourself

Growth as a barber starts with growth as a person. They dive into selfdiscipline, goal-setting, and emotional intelligence, helping barbers become not only top-tier professionals but also leaders in their communities. A barber who knows their worth and lives with purpose creates an unforgettable experience for their clients and leaves a lasting legacy.

Barbershop Upskilling: Elevating the Craft

Of course, no program would be complete without next-level technical training. Their immersion experience includes advanced fading techniques, precision scissor work, customer experience strategies, and business development tactics that take barbers to the next level.

A word from Danny...

The impact of the Bulletproof Barbering Immersion Course speaks for itself - One barbershop owner reported his biggest week of turnover in two years after just two days with the program.

Another made it a priority to educate his team on our sales and rebooking techniques. As a result, 70% of appointments were booked out three weeks in advance, and product sales increased by 175% in the first week alone. Others found their work became easier and more enjoyable, cutting down their fading time and building confidence in their craft.

The Hearts & Minds Immersion Course isn’t just another workshop. It’s designed for barbers who want more from their careers, who refuse to settle for mediocrity, and who are ready to take their craft, health, and business to the next level.

If you’re serious about growth and longevity—not just becoming better at cutting hair but becoming an all-around Bulletproof Barber—then this is the education for you.

When we take care of ourselves first, we show up better for our clients, our teams, our industry, and most importantly, our communities.

Welcome to the Future of Barbering Education.

at Kings Domain Barbers KEEGAN WALKLIN

Keegan Walklin’s journey into barbering started with a fascination for hair artistry and the transformative power of a great haircut. After spending nearly a decade in the fitness industry in roles like club management, sales, and eventually owning his own gym, he found his passion had faded, and he needed a change. Keegan wanted to work with his hands, to create something tangible.

He always loved keeping up with hair trends and chatting with his barber and his stepmum, who was conveniently a hairdresser/ barber back home in New Zealand. It all just made sense — barbering was his calling. The learning curve was steep, but the joy of seeing the immediate, positive impact of his work on clients made it all worthwhile. Every haircut is an opportunity to create, connect, and contribute to someone’s confidence.

Editor Louise May chats with Keegs about his journey, and being a puppy carer!

Tell us a little about you?

I am a dedicated barber at Kings Domain Barber Shop with a passion for creativity, precision, and building connections through my craft. I take pride in delivering high-quality services while staying ahead of industry trends to ensure every client leaves feeling confident and refreshed. My journey into barbering has been fuelled by a love for learning, a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, and the desire to create memorable experiences for my clients. Outside of the barbershop, I am a devoted puppy carer, American BBQ and country music lover, and black coffee and Guinness drinker.

Who inspires you both personally & professionally?

Many people have influenced my work, but two stand out. First, Lyndal Salmon, Biba Academy Creative Director and 2023 Australian Hairdresser of the Year. Lyndal’s passion and knowledge are unmatched, and she taught me the importance of being intentional — every section, every blow-dry movement matters. The lesson of being present and deliberate in every action has profoundly impacted my work. The other is Peter Gosling of Glassbox Barbershop in Canada, whose work is bridging the gap between barbers and hair stylists. Their dedication and innovative approaches continually push me to improve. My family has also always been a source of inspiration demonstrating a strong work ethic and the importance of commitment, consistency, and genuine care for others. I also take a lot of inspiration from my team at Kings Domain Barber Shop - we all come from different walks of life, and it is great to be able to share and learn from my peers in a challenging yet rewarding Team.

What do you love most about what you do?

What I love most is seeing my clients light up with confidence after a cut. We have a saying at home: “Look good, feel good.” A great haircut can change someone’s entire week or even month, and knowing I contribute to that positive change is deeply rewarding. I thrive on the relationships I build in the barbershop, hearing clients’ stories, sharing laughs, and being part of their lives beyond the haircut. The creative freedom to experiment with styles and techniques adds another layer of excitement to my work.

What does barbering mean to you, what do you love most about it?

Barbering is more than a job; it’s a craft rooted in creativity, precision, and community. It’s about providing a safe, welcoming space where clients can offload their worries or share their successes. Anyone can cut hair, but building trust and genuine relationships is what makes a great barber. I see barbering as an evolving art form — one that requires technical skill, artistic vision, and the ability to understand and connect with clients on a personal level. The barbershop is a community hub, a place where friendships are forged, and self-esteem is restored.

You are an ambassador for JRL, can you tell us about this? Being named a JRL ambassador was a dream come true. I worked tirelessly on social media to engage with the JRL and Hairco teams, and when the opportunity came, I was over the moon. JRL is a leader in innovation, known for tools that are quiet, efficient, and high performing. I feel privileged to represent a brand that genuinely values feedback from professionals to improve its products. As an ambassador, I get to test new tools, provide insights, and share my experiences with the wider barbering community. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a company that prioritises quality, innovation, and the practical needs of barbers.

What are your go-to products for styling?

Currently, I love ‘Kings Domain Melbourne - Thickening Treatment Spray,’ which I use as a blow-dry assist and volumizer. This product is fantastic for adding body and texture without weighing the hair down. Another favourite is ‘Solid State Fat Wax,’ which provides great hold and, when finger-styled, creates amazing separation. I appreciate how versatile this wax is — perfect for textured, messy looks as well as more polished styles. High-quality products are essential for delivering consistent, long-lasting results, and these two never let me down.

Tell us about being a Puppy Carer!

Becoming a puppy carer wasn’t my idea but I don’t regret it. One morning, my partner Laura said, “Please don’t be mad, but I signed us up as carers for Seeing Eye Dogs Australia.” I was thrilled! We love the dogs — they’re so intelligent and gentle but a bit crazy, like us. Our first puppy, Yousef, had us on an emotional rollercoaster, but when he graduated and was placed with a client in Queensland, we were incredibly proud. The experience has taught me patience, compassion, and the joy of contributing to a cause that changes lives. Watching these pups grow, learn, and eventually support someone with vision impairment is truly heartwarming.

Any future news you would like to share?

I’m currently working on a few creative hair collections for awards and showcases. I’m also looking toward shop management and, eventually, ownership. I’d also love the opportunity to connect with more highprofile clients — I recently had the pleasure of looking after US country music artist Jordan Davis on his world tour with Luke Combs. My barber journey is ongoing and forever changing, and I’m excited for what’s ahead. Barbering has given me so much, and I’m eager to give back to the community that has supported my growth.

THE ART OF THE PHOTOSHOOT

PART 1

The 2024 Australian Modern Barber Awards topped record submissions for the photographic categories. With creative momentum at an alltime high, we as barbers are showcasing just how far men’s hair has come as a staple in fashion.

While there’s an endless display of incredible work, some might be thinking, ‘Yeah, that’s great—but where would I even start?’ That’s where this fourpart series comes in, breaking down the art of undertaking a photoshoot.

Part 1: Conceptualisation.

Every great shoot starts with a spark of inspiration. But where do you find it? The answer: everywhere. Inspiration doesn’t have to be complicated—it often comes from the world around you. My past collections have been inspired by music, film and my feelings towards the world we live in. My ‘Sound of Silver’ collection was inspired by LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy discussing his album of the same name in an interview. He talked about adding silver trinkets and cloth in their recording studio to encapsulate a glistening silver atmosphere and My ‘Local Gods” collection was an homage to Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 classic ‘Romeo + Juliet”

Firstly, start off with a broad idea. Are you drawn to the sharp, structured looks of classic men’s hair? The raw energy of street culture? The effortless cool of high-fashion editorials? Maybe you watched Lost Boys and thought ‘man Kiefer Sutherland looks iconic with his blonde mohawk!’ The possibilities are endless when it comes to shooting an idea, it comes down to what has an impact on you!

Now you have your general idea, lets narrow it down.. If you like vintage styles, are you leaning towards a James Dean ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ of the 50’s or a 70’s Mick Jagger rockstar look? If you like something more modern, is it avant-garde? Like the fashion week runway trends, or is it more what celebrities are rocking on the red carpet? Honing in on these details will help with the cohesion of the concept. With your theme in mind, it’s time to bring your vision to life—starting with mood-boarding. Mood-boarding will help with defining the details of your shoot and is one of my favourite aspects of the process. To help me fully flesh out my concept, I typically break my mood board into categories:

Hair – the trims I want to showcase. Do I want to show off period accurate hair or do I want to focus on a particular aesthetic like wet looks or texture?

Photography – the style of photography I want used. Do I want close ups, wide angle/fisheye or long exposure shots from my photographer.

Posing – What emotion do I want to capture from the model? Do I want gritty scumbag, or something more vulnerable from my models?

Lighting – the use of different lighting to help create an atmosphere. Do I want bold and dynamic and focus on a specific colour or do I keep it subtle and focus on more natural lighting?

Makeup - is it subtle grooming or is it a complex look to help tie in the other factors of the concept?

Styling – the clothing inspiration to help bring the concept together. Should I go for something casual and relatable, or do I want abstract pieces to lean into the avant-garde idea?

Once you have your sections broken down, find your references. Pinterest and Instagram are my go-to platforms, offering endless inspiration.. Follow photographers and fashion accounts that align with your style. Even TikTok and editorial magazines can offer fresh ideas on lighting, composition, and styling.

A well-structured mood board ensures that everyone involved, from photographers to models, understand the vision. Keep it concise—your mood board should instantly communicate the essence of your shoot at a glance. You can create your boards digitally using apps like Canva or, my personal favourite, create a physical display to bring on shoot day. Having this visual reference will keep your shoot focused and cohesive.

A strong concept is the foundation of any great photoshoot. By taking the time to find inspiration, gather references, and build a clear mood board, you’re setting yourself up for a well-executed and visually striking shoot. Whether you’re showcasing classic barbering techniques or pushing creative boundaries, having a solid plan ensures your vision translates seamlessly into the final images. With your concept in place, the next step is bringing it to life— and that starts with assembling the right creative team. In Part 2, we’ll break down how to find and collaborate with photographers, models, and stylists to ensure your shoot runs smoothly and deliver the best results. Stay tuned!

The Future of

HAIR REJUVENATION

Has Arrived! And it all starts in the scalp …

As the beauty and skincare industry continues to evolve, one modality has consistently stood out for its versatility and effectiveness: microneedling. DermapenWorld™’s Dermapen 4™ has revolutionised the way we approach a range of skin concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles to pigmentation, acne, rosacea, scars and more.

However, the scalp is the next frontier where DermapenWorld is making a particularly significant impact by offering clients an advanced solution to one of the most emotionally charged aesthetic challenges: hair loss.

Whether you’re looking to add a new revenue stream, attract new patients, or upgrade the services you already offer, Dermapen 4 and the Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-GROW Collection™ can help position your clinic at the forefront of the hair restoration market.

Elevating

Microneedling for Hair Restoration

The introduction of the EXO-GROW Collection builds on these established benefits, incorporating science-backed, innovative ingredients that work to strengthen and rejuvenate both the scalp and strands.

Microneedling, the process of using fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin, has long been recognised as a powerful tool for rejuvenation.

The Dermapen 4, the gold standard in microneedling devices, enhances this technique by delivering unparalleled precision, comfort and speed, making it the ideal device for a variety of skin concerns. However, the versatility of Dermapen 4 goes beyond skin resurfacing—its ability to stimulate hair follicles and improve scalp health has been an exciting development for skincare professionals.

Traditionally, microneedling for hair restoration required combination therapies such as PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) or prescribed topical medications. But now, DermapenWorld is taking things to the next level with the Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-GROW Collection—a groundbreaking range of products that harness the power of exosome technology to enhance the appearance and density of hair.

Optimising Scalp Health as a Hair Loss Solution

The scalp is home to thousands of hair follicles that are directly impacted by skin health. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that Dermapen 4 procedures for hair loss have been incredibly effective in improving scalp circulation, stimulating follicular activity, breaking down scar tissue that inhibits follicles, enhancing the infusion of topical products and promoting the overall condition of the hair.

Tailored Solutions for Different Types of Hair Loss

From androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) to traction alopecia and telogen effluvium, there are many different types of hair loss. BARBERS CHAIR

Two Apprentices, One Dream & A Barbershop Built on Friendship

KNUCKLEHEADS

Some businesses are born out of necessity, others from a stroke of luck. But for Michael Vernon-Livingston and Luke Grevell, Knuckleheads Barbershop was the natural evolution of their shared journey—two different paths, one ultimate goal.

Finding the Calling

For Michael, the road to barbering began after three years in Canada. Returning home in 2020, he found himself in quarantine, reflecting on his next steps. A conversation with longtime friend and barber, Roddy Machray, sparked inspiration. “I’ve always loved talking to people and hearing their stories. I wanted a way to help people, and barbering seemed like the perfect fit,” Michael recalls.

Luke’s story, on the other hand, was shaped by his best mate. “I had never even been to a barber before,” he laughs. “But my mate started his apprenticeship and needed someone to practice on. I was captivated by the atmosphere and the industry as a whole, so I pursued an apprenticeship myself.”

Both men recognised early on that barbering was more than just cutting hair. It was about forming connections, being part of a community, and having the ability to make someone’s day with a fresh cut and good conversation.

The Apprenticeship Journey

Michael began his training at MIG, spending six months refining his craft before securing an apprenticeship at the Barber Shed with the help of MIG Trainers Rozi and Olivia. Over the next 2.5 years, he learned the ropes while receiving continued support from his mentors at MIG. “I had great teachers who supported me, and I still stay in touch with them to this day,” Michael says.

For Luke, immersing himself in the barber shop environment helped him forge connections. “Visiting the shop where my mate was cutting gave me the chance to meet the owner and senior barbers. When the opportunity to start an apprenticeship came up, I put my hand up.”

The biggest hurdle? Confidence. “At the start, I struggled with self-belief,” Luke admits. Michael faced a different challenge—being a mature-age apprentice made it tough to find opportunities. But perseverance paid off for both. They dedicated themselves to mastering their craft, soaking up knowledge from seasoned barbers and always looking for ways to improve.

From Apprentices to Entrepreneurs

After completing their apprenticeships, Michael and Luke worked as senior barbers but felt they had outgrown their environment. “We both had a vision for a shop that focused on quality barbering, building community connections, and just having a bloody good time,” Michael explains. Knuckleheads was born. Finding the perfect location in Buddina behind the Kawana shops, they transformed an empty space in a new apartment high-rise into their dream shop. “We did a lot of the fit-out ourselves, with the help of friends and family,” Luke says. “Huge shoutout to Mat at Envious Painting and Michael’s dad, Gerry from Gerry’s Fixology.”

Crafting a Unique Barbershop Experience

Knuckleheads is more than just a place to get a haircut—it’s a space where people feel at home. The team, currently consisting of Michael, Luke, and Tara, have built an atmosphere of camaraderie and comfort. “We wanted to create a shop where people could not only get an excellent haircut but also feel like they’re hanging out with mates,” Luke says. The shop’s culture is built on inclusivity, humour, and high standards. “Sometimes, people just need a place to unwind, have a cold beer, and share their stories. We want Knuckleheads to be that place,” Michael adds.

Crafting the Perfect Cut

While both barbers love a challenge, Luke’s go-to style is the taper fade—a modern twist on a classic look. Michael enjoys anything that pushes his skills, especially detailed scissor and clipper work. But for both, the true highlight is the people. “Building relationships with our clients, having a laugh, and creating a space where they can unwind—that’s what keeps it fun,” says Luke.

Their clientele includes a mix of locals, regulars, and first-time visitors who quickly become part of the Knuckleheads family. “We’re known for giving you the perfect cut while having a good time,” Michael adds.

Overcoming Challenges & Looking Ahead

Running a business comes with its fair share of hurdles. One of the biggest challenges Michael and Luke faced was securing the funds to get started. “Finding the money to open our own shop wasn’t easy,” Michael admits. “But we believed in our vision and made it work.”

Another challenge? Worrying about individual trading days instead of looking at the bigger picture. “At first, I’d stress over one slow day rather than focusing on the week or month as a whole,” Luke explains. “Learning to step back and see the bigger picture has been a huge personal growth moment for me.”

Despite the obstacles, their passion for the industry keeps them going. “We love what we do. Every day is different, and the styles are always evolving,” says Michael. “There’s always something new to learn.”

The Future of Knuckleheads

With nearly two years under their belt, Michael and Luke are excited for what’s next. “We want to continue growing our business and strengthening our ties with the community,” says Michael. Expanding their team is also a priority. “We’re looking forward to bringing on more talented barbers who share our vision,” adds Luke.

Ultimately, their goal remains the same: to create a welcoming space where everyone feels accepted, with just the right amount of banter.

“Knuckleheads isn’t just a barbershop—it’s a place where people come to connect, laugh, and leave feeling their best,” Michael says.

With their passion, talent, and commitment to their craft, Michael and Luke have carved out more than just a barbershop—they’ve built a legacy. And for the clients who walk through their doors, Knuckleheads is more than just a haircut. It’s a place to belong.

ELEVATING BARBER EDUCATION

Creating More Opportunities for Apprentices

The barbering industry has undergone a significant transformation over the past decade, with education playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of barbers across Australia. As demand for high-quality barbers grows, so does the need for structured, hands-on training that prepares apprentices for the real-world expectations of a fast-paced industry.

At The Barber Academy, we are committed to setting the standard in barber education. Our programs have been designed to give apprentices the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed, ensuring they are industry-ready from day one. We don’t just focus on technical skills; we believe in developing well-rounded professionals who understand customer service, business acumen, and the latest trends in barbering.

A key step in this journey has been our collaboration with 4 Barbers, an initiative that has taken hands-on training to the next level. Through this partnership, we have introduced more masterclasses, interactive training sessions, and access to industry-leading educators. This means that our apprentices are now learning from some of the best in the business, gaining insights and refining their skills in a way that traditional learning alone cannot achieve.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Apprentices are not only improving their practical skills but also developing a deeper appreciation for the craft. Our goal is to ensure that every apprentice has the tools to excel, whether they are working in a high-end barbershop or setting up their own business.

Beyond hands-on training, we have also developed a structured curriculum that covers every aspect of modern barbering. From classic scissor techniques to contemporary fades, our students are immersed in an education that balances tradition with innovation. Moreover, we are continuously refining our course content to stay ahead of industry trends, ensuring that our apprentices graduate with cutting-edge skills.

Another advantage of our collaboration with 4 Barbers is the increased exposure to industry events, competitions, and networking opportunities. By integrating our students into the broader barbering community, we provide them with invaluable connections that can help launch their careers. Whether it’s showcasing their work at barber expos or learning from master barbers in exclusive workshops, these experiences reinforce their passion and dedication to the craft. With education evolving at such a rapid pace, it’s essential that we continue to push the boundaries and provide learning opportunities that genuinely make a difference. Through structured training, industry collaborations, and innovative learning experiences, we are shaping the next generation of skilled, passionate barbers. As we look to the future, our focus remains on expanding these opportunities and ensuring that barber education continues to evolve. The partnership with 4 Barbers is just the beginning—by working together with industry leaders, we can continue to elevate the standards of education and create even greater pathways for apprentices to excel.

THE BARBER INDUSTRY IN AUSTRALIA:

Cert II Programs and Pathways to Certification

The Barbering Industry in Australia is an essential part of the broader beauty and personal care sector, playing a significant role in shaping the latest grooming trends. Over the past decade, barbering has evolved from a traditional, localised service to a thriving industry that attracts young, aspiring professionals eager to learn the craft and build careers.

Training for this profession is pivotal to ensuring that new entrants have the necessary skills and knowledge to meet industry standards. The SHB20216 Certificate II in Salon Assistant that we have been using is a key stepping stone for many who wish to become professional barbers, providing a foundational understanding of the craft before advancing to more complex qualifications like the SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering. Currently, the Certificate II in Salon Assistant provides a broad introduction to the hair industry. We are advocating for the development of a dedicated Certificate II Introduction to Barbering, which would offer a more tailored approach, focusing specifically on the foundational skills and techniques essential for a career in barbering.

The Role of RTOs (Registered Training Organisations) in Barbering Education In Australia, vocational education and training (VET) is regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and provided through Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). These RTOs offer nationally recognised training that aligns with the qualifications set by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). RTOs are essential for delivering quality barbering education, as they are responsible for ensuring that their courses meet industry standards and equip students with the practical and theoretical knowledge needed to succeed in the barbering profession.

For those pursuing a career in barbering, completing the Certificate II in Salon Assistant is often the first step. This qualification is typically delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and provides students with essential entry-level skills, preparing them for work in a barbershop environment. The Cert II covers fundamental techniques and knowledge, including hair cutting, styling, shaving, and customer service, ensuring students develop a strong foundation in the trade.

For school-based trainees and apprentices, the Certificate II offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience while completing their education. Through structured training and realworld practice in a barbershop, school-based participants can develop their skills under the guidance of experienced barbers. RTOs ensure the program aligns with industry standards, providing a clear pathway for students to transition into a full-time apprenticeship, secure employment as a barber, or advance to higher qualifications in the field.

The Importance of the Certificate II

The Certificate II offers a comprehensive introduction to the barbering industry, focusing on practical skills, safety protocols, and essential client service practices. The course typically includes modules such as:

Haircutting Techniques: This includes basic cutting, trimming, and styling, with an emphasis on the different styles, tools, and products used in the barbering trade.

Shaving and Grooming: Students learn traditional shaving techniques, beard grooming, and facial treatments, essential for working in barbershops.

Health and Safety: The program ensures that apprentices are familiar with workplace safety standards, sanitation practices, and the handling of tools and equipment in a safe and hygienic manner.

Client Communication: Developing good client relationships and communication skills are key components, ensuring that barbers can cater to client needs and offer professional advice.

The Certificate II also serves as an important pathway into the Certificate III in Barbering, which is a more advanced qualification. While the Cert II focuses on the basics, the Cert III provides a more in-depth exploration of the trade, building upon the foundations.

Funding and Government Support

The Australian Government recognises the importance of developing a skilled workforce and offers a range of funding initiatives to support apprenticeships and traineeships across various industries, including barbering. One of the key funding models available is the User Choice Program, which provides financial assistance to apprentices and trainees to help cover training costs associated with completing qualifications. This funding is often directed toward apprentices who are employed in the industry and are undertaking formal training with an RTO.

In addition, Smart and Skilled is another government initiative aimed at providing financial support for students pursuing vocational education. It offers subsidised training in various qualifications, including those in the barbering industry. Students who meet specific eligibility criteria may receive fee relief, making the Cert II and Cert III programs more affordable. These funding options are designed to support

individuals in gaining industry-recognised qualifications and skills, contributing to the overall growth and sustainability of the barbering profession in Australia.

The Pathway from Cert II to Cert III

The transition from the Certificate II to the Certificate III in Barbering is an important progression for aspiring barbers. While the Cert II provides the essential skills for entrylevel employment, the Cert III is designed for those who wish to further develop their craft and become fully qualified barbers. The Cert III is usually a combination of on-the-job training and more detailed theoretical learning. It covers advanced techniques in hair cutting, styling, and grooming, as well as client consultation and business management skills. By completing the Cert III, students are eligible to work independently as professional barbers and may even open their own barbershops.

The Cert III in Barbering often opens up further career opportunities, such as becoming a senior barber, barber shop owner, or trainer in the field. The more advanced qualification is highly valued in the industry, as it demonstrates a high level of expertise and professionalism. Many RTOs offer the Cert III as a progression from the Cert II, ensuring that students have a clear pathway and can continue their learning journey seamlessly.

Wrapping up for the first issue 2025

The barbering industry in Australia continues to thrive, driven by both traditional techniques and modern trends. The Certificate II is a crucial starting point for many aspiring professionals, offering a solid foundation in essential barbering skills as well as life skills that will last them throughout their career. Certificate II in Salon Assistant needs to be changed to Certificate II Introduction to Barbering in 2025. With the support of RTOs, government funding programs, and a clear pathway to more advanced qualifications like the Certificate III, young apprentices are more well-equipped to enter and succeed in the industry. As the demand for skilled barbers grows, those who complete their training through these structured programs are well-positioned to make their mark in one of Australia’s most dynamic and rewarding industries.

CHARITIES

It’s Not About You

As hairdressers and barbers, we dedicate ourselves to our craft, our clients, and our businesses. We work tirelessly to build our reputation, refine our skills, and create an experience that keeps people coming back. And rightfully as this is our livelihood.

But beyond the daily hustle of running a salon or barbershop, we are often approached to support local sporting clubs, schools, and community groups. These affiliations are valuable , they help build relationships and strengthen the cycle of support between businesses and the community. It’s a win-win.

However, every now and then, we get approached by charities. And that’s where things shift. Supporting a charity isn’t about business exposure, brand growth, or a pat on the back. It’s about something much bigger.

Giving Back Without Expecting Returns

Charities rely heavily on businesses, both big and small. Some can afford to donate money, time, or services, while others simply cannot. And that’s okay. Not every business is in a position to contribute, but for those who can, it can be a deeply rewarding experience.

For me, charities have always held a special place in my heart. It’s not about my name being associated with a cause; it’s about what I can do to spread awareness and raise much needed funds. I’ve been fortunate enough to support and work with some incredible organisations, and each experience has been a reminder that charity work is never about personal recognition.

Hair by Ciccone & the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre

For five years, Hair by Ciccone was a proud sponsor of the Olivia NewtonJohn Cancer Centre. This charity was and still is, deeply important in the fight against cancer, providing support and treatment for those battling the disease.

During this time, we had the opportunity to cross paths with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry . Olivia Newton-John, Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, and John Farnham, to name a few. While it was incredible to meet these legends, the real privilege was in donating our services and raising funds for such a meaningful cause. The focus was never on us; it was about making a difference.

The Polished Man – A Cause That Matters

Another charity I had the honour of supporting was The Polished Man, an organisation raising awareness and funds to combat violence against women and children. Once again, this initiative brought me into contact with well-known artists like Vance Joy, but the goal was always bigger than any celebrity involvement.

It was about using our platform as hairdressers and barbers to start conversations, raise awareness, and ultimately help change lives. We all have the ability to make an impact, no matter how big or small.

A New Role - Hair / Barber Ambassador for THE WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE

As this article is being published, word will have already spread that I have been appointed as the official hair/ Barber Ambassador for The World’s Greatest Shave, supporting the Leukaemia Foundation.

This is a cause I am incredibly passionate about. The Leukaemia Foundation is at the forefront of research into blood cancer, working tirelessly to improve treatment and find a cure. The World’s Greatest Shave is one of their biggest fundraising events, and as an ambassador, I will be shaving heads at schools, offices, and events across the country.

Yes, there will be a national rollout campaign featuring my involvement. Yes, there will be exposure. But my mission is to use that exposure to drive as many donations as possible. This is about bringing people together to support a cause that affects countless families. It’s not about me.

Advice for Hairdressers & Barbers Looking to Get Involved

After 29 years in the industry, I’ve learned a few things about giving back. If you’re thinking about supporting a charity, here are some things to consider:

1. Know Your Limits

Before committing to a cause, ask yourself:

• Can I afford to contribute financially?

• Do I have the time to dedicate?

• Can I physically take on the responsibilities?

If the answer is no, it’s okay to say no. I’ve turned down roles in the past because I knew I couldn’t fully commit, and that’s better than making promises you can’t keep.

2. It’s About Giving, Not Receiving

If you decide to get involved, do it for the right reasons. Charity work is not a business transaction. It’s not about what you can gain from it, whether that’s publicity, networking, or recognition.

The real reward is knowing that you’ve made a difference. That your time, skills, or donations have helped families in need. That you’ve used your platform to raise awareness for something bigger than yourself.

At the end of the day, it’s not about you , it’s about the impact you leave behind.

So, if you have the chance to support a cause, whether big or small, take it. Not for the glory, not for the exposure, but because you have the power to change lives. And that is something truly worth doing.

Here is the donation link below. Every little bit counts!

HUMAN CONNECTION

In The Barbershop.

Barbershops are a cornerstone of the community. When people sit in our chair, they come for more than just a haircut— it’s a space for conversation and self-care.

For some, it is one of the few spaces they feel they can fully unwind. Beyond the clippers and the scissors, I believe a truly epic barbershop experience hinges on something deeper: client connection. The relationship between us and our clients goes beyond a simple transactional exchange. We are fortunate enough to have the ability to form relationships built on trust, familiarity, and shared stories, often spanning over many years, and with multiple generations.

Over the years, barbershops have been spaces where people gather not only for their grooming but also for a chat and a laugh. We see our clients regularly, sometimes weekly! This frequency creates an opportunity to cultivate strong connections. Many people lead busy lives, going from a demanding job to a busy home life, this means their time in our chair is the only opportunity they get to relax, have ‘me time’ and be pampered. It is the highlight of many people’s busy schedule.

We have the ability to create a space where people feel safe to let their guard down, people often say it is ‘like therapy’. For many, the act of being heard and understood can be just as important as the haircut itself. I hear about everything, from family matters to hard days at work, personal goals, and even secrets they wouldn’t feel comfortable tell anyone else. This trust is built over time, and it is a bond we are privileged to share.

I believe mastering the art of communication and creating a personalised experience is one of the most powerful ways we can build a strong, loyal clientele and is imperative to the longevity of any barber business. We can from connections and build rapport through attention to detail, a great

barber recalls the little things; Their child’s name, their footy team, the family holiday they were going on or the job interview the last haircut was in prep for. When you can do this well, people feel valued are nearly DEFINITELY going to come back again and again and recommend you to their friends!

The ability to read body language is a particularly important skill, some clients come in for conversation, while others are much more keen to sit in peace. A skilled barber knows when to chat, and when not to. In my experience though, I find, most people want to talk. It is important to remember not everyone has the opportunity to be around people as often as us or feels as comfortable in social situations as us. When can we gently create space for those more shy, reserved people to chat comfortably, and come out of their skin it really can be such an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both the client and us.

I live by the belief that we can learn something from every person we meet! Everyone fosters a unique perspective shaped by their experiences and everyone has something valuable to teach us. We are fortunate to have a captive audience, and this gives us the opportunity to ask questions, which exposes us to new ideas, and deepens our understanding of the world. I learn things from the kids I chat with just as learn things from the adults. Because we are exposed to such a diverse range of people, we get free advice on things business, finance and life, all while literally doing our job. We have a wealth of free knowledge available to us if we so wish to take advantage of it. This is one of the most valuable and enjoyable parts of our business, and something I always make sure to capitalise on as it helps me grow both personally and intellectually. Even in casual conversations, a simple question can lead to unreal lessons.

The best part of a good barbershop lies in its ability to transform a simple service into a meaningful relationship. We live in an age where people are glued to their phones and laptops, but the barbershop remains a place where human connection thrives! Let’s not lose that.

Launching A Successful Business!

As Esquire have just completed the task of relocating one of our shops, even after 20 years in business, it reminded me of the importance of planning and being prepared for what may eventuate.

These are my 5 non negotiables that anyone about to take the leap into barbershop ownership should have planned before you sign that lease!

1. Have a well-researched Business Plan

A robust business plan serves as a roadmap for your future, I still revert back to my original plan made over 20 years ago and while it’s evolved and become far more astute, it still serves as a reminder of the core principles I set out to achieve as a young businessman. For a plan to be successful it needs to be done with genuine research and conclusions, not with ‘potentially’ & likely’ scenarios.

When choosing your location conduct thorough research to understand market trends, foot traffic, customer needs, and even potential business interruptions (Brisbane has been hit by 2 severe floods in my time of business) This analysis informs strategic decisions and identifies opportunities for difference.

Liaise with other local business’s, hang around for the day to identity the quieter time & do some searches for potential development around the area.

Your plan should include your financial projections, outlining expected revenue, expenses and growth projection.

A marketing strategy that will resonate & reach your intended demographic... if you’re trying to attract CEO and corporate types, TikTok probably isn’t the space for it!

Your plan should also include the structure you intend to go down (sole trader, company etc) and ensure compliance with local laws, including necessary licenses and permits.

2. Your target demographic

Knowing your target market enables you to tailor your services, prices, and be more effective with your marketing strategies. Whether you decide that you want to be more classic, modern, urban or a traditional shop, knowing what client you want to attract should be on top of your list as it will be the basis of many decisions you have to make moving forward. Of course, these lines will blur and get crossed to a degree, but deciding what your ‘bread and butter’ client base looks like is paramount in deciding the direction that your business will head in.

3. Selecting the Ideal Location

The location of your business profoundly influences the afore mentioned customer base, marketing, and overall success, you’ve already decided on your target clientele, so now you want to ensure your business is situated where your customers reside or frequent or work. For instance, a modern shop targeting young professionals would thrive in urban areas with a high concentration of units, offices (residents AND workers) Whilst Google is fantastic for small business operators, visibility for a shop is still a game changer when it comes to being busy, there’s a reason why shopping

centres are so popular! Ground floor rents is always premium so make sure the foot traffic going past reflects the rent you pay. Finally, parking is a must for most shops, the more access to parking you have the further people will be prepared to travel for your services

4. Managing Costs

Financial knowledge and planning are essential during the length of your business but even more so at the beginning, a good accountant is your friend here!

You are probably very good at knowing Client’s and cutting hair but running a business is a completely different skill set that takes up many facets, but the first you must master is knowing what your outgoings and breakeven Look like.

As we are a very labour-intensive industry, it is difficult to break down our overheads in a traditional sense i.e. 30% going to fixed costs. 30% going to variable costs 10% to GST and 30% to the owners. Your fixed costs will be wages and rent, your variables will be insurances, stock, utility bills, marketing etc. These can mount up very quickly so knowing ahead and being prepared for what is to come is essential. When budgeting for your fit out, make sure you have contingency, as often there will be things that arise you weren’t planning on! for example if the building is more than two stories high and you intend to have basins you’ll need an engineer report, possibly core drilling to be done, and of course to be approved by council which can mount up in costs before any work been done!

5. Branding

Your name should become synonymous with your branding, your identity, work ethos and the people that you hire should all align with your brand. It’s not just a logo. It is the very crux of what your business is about, and the clients should know what to expect when they come to see you simply because of that brand name. This will take time to become a reality, but make sure that the logos and your mission statement align with the business that you intend to build.

In conclusion, launching a successful business demands careful consideration of location, a deep understanding of your target demographic, prudent financial management, and comprehensive planning. By diligently addressing these aspects, you lay a strong foundation for your business’s growth and prosperity.

Finding Genuine Connections Beyond Your Client Base

For all of you currently working as a barber or owning a barber business, the reality is that most likely you are inherently a people person. With customers and colleagues in and out of your day every day there is always a person to talk to.

Increasingly though, when it comes to getting help for your business and or improving your skills, it can seem like no one is there or at least that no one has the time to genuinely connect, listen and to respond. And while there is a raft of tools out there to help reduce the administration time for barbers, they are now so highly automated (and artificial intelligence driven) that finding someone to talk to and to connect with is quite a challenge!

The shame of this is the fact that the barber industry is one of the richest pools of diverse experience and perspectives that you can encounter, a fact enhanced by the trends that are seeing so many people from all walks of life take up a career in this field. Finding real connections with peers colleagues and the people who orbit our industry is one of the best ways to continue to grow and love your work.

Right now there are more ways than ever to take advantage of connections as a barber. Everything from industry events (like Expo4Barbers) to professional development functions industry gatherings, there are many ways to grow both professional and personal relationships. And the benefits can be significant for you and your business. Finding new staff, learning about new ways to manage and grow your business and brand, sharing experiences to de-stress the job, finding new and better ways of doing things or looking after your mental health are just some of the direct benefits of human to human connections.

The barbering industry traditionally always had a very strong sense of community. One senses some of that has dissipated over time with social media, email or chat bot-based help services and the like, but that it is coming back strongly now.

The reality of the appeal and desire for connection in barbering is exemplified by the experience of one of the industry’s newest participants. In building and developing a booking and payment platform for barbers, the team behind Trybe have been struck by the responsiveness of their clients to the fact that they are real people, accessible always and that they listen to a barbers needs and wants in trying to deliver them the best possible support they can.

“Perhaps it’s an advantage of being smaller than the big international software companies, but our experience with Trybe has been that we can really connect with barbers well beyond providing a service. We’ve even been able to introduce barbers to each other who work down the road from one another and who have never met” says Bailey Smith, one of Trybe’s founders. “And then once they have met, you see them helping each other out in all sorts of ways”.

Bailey’s co-founder Sam Stanley goes on to say that “while we started out determined to build the best booking and payments platform for barbers that we could, it did not take us long to realise the opportunity for Trybe to live up to its name and to help create connections for people”. “While of course we are hoping to make life easier for all barber business owners with Trybe, the real opportunity is to help individual barbers succeed and one part of that we are working towards is how to create genuine connections for them”.

So why not grab the opportunity to connect with your industry beyond your client base and coworkers? Even a small step like introducing yourself to the barbers in the shop down the road from you, attending a professional development course, or getting to something like Expo4Barbers, that step will pay off in spades. Perhaps the boys got it right with their brand name – barbers are a tribe - and a great tribe at that.

Rent Logic: How A Fixed Increase Beats A CPI Increase for Commercial Spaces.

When it comes to entering a Lease on a commercial space, there’s always the question of how to handle annual rent increases. Some Landlords like to tie the rent to changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), while others prefer to keep it simple with fixed increases. Let’s break down the pros and cons of both approaches and why sticking to fixed rent increases might be the smarter move.

CPI in Leases: Keeping It Fair

So, what’s the deal with using CPI increases in commercial Leases? Well, it’s a way to adjust rents based on how prices for goods and services are changing over time. This method can keep things fair and transparent between Landlords and Tenants, helping to avoid any disagreements over the need for rent increases. Plus, it can protect Landlords from losing out to inflation by making sure their rental income keeps up with rising costs.

However, there are some downsides to using CPI increases. For Tenants, it can mean facing unpredictable rent changes that make budgeting a headache. And for Landlords, relying solely on CPI might not always cover their actual increasing expenses, leading to financial strain. That’s where fixed rent increases come in as a more stable and predictable option.

Steady Rent Rises: Planning Ahead

Negotiating fixed rent increases means setting a specific amount for rent increases each year, giving both Landlords and Tenants a clear picture of what to expect. This predictability helps with long-term planning and budgeting, benefiting everyone involved. It also helps Landlords keep pace with their costs without having to worry about fluctuating CPI numbers.

Tenant Tranquillity: Predictable Rent Bumps

For Tenants, fixed rent increases provide peace of mind, knowing exactly how much their rent will go up each year. This makes it easier to budget and avoids any sudden spikes in rental costs. It can also lead to better relationships between Tenants and Landlords, as everyone knows what to expect.

In the end, while CPI increases offer flexibility and transparency, opting for fixed rent increases could be the way to go in commercial Leasing. With stability, predictability, and protection against inflation, fixed increases can make life easier for both Landlords and Tenants. By finding the right balance between the two approaches, Landlords and Tenants can create Lease agreements that work for everyone in the long run.

Talking to Landlords: Dealing with CPI

If you find yourself in a situation where a Landlord insists on CPI increases in a commercial Lease, it is essential to approach the situation tactfully and strategically. Here are some steps to consider.

When a Landlord pushes for CPI increases, it is important to try to understand their stance first. You might decide to negotiate by suggesting compromises like capping CPI boosts or proposing fixed increases or a combination of both. Additionally, you could offer alternatives for stability, such as fixed rent adjustments. We recommend seeking advice, if negotiations get tricky. Above all, it is important to evaluate the Lease terms carefully and consider flexibility, if CPI increases are non-negotiable. And last, but not least, keep everything in writing for clarity.

Remember that open communication, understanding the Lease terms and exploring options, can help navigate a situation where a Landlord insists on CPI increases in a commercial Lease. Throughout each Lease negotiation, it is important to approach the situation professionally and seek mutually agreeable solutions whenever possible.

New Digs Hunt: When Leases Hit Snags

If negotiations stall over CPI increases, exploring other commercial premises may be a better and more strategic option. Finding a Lease that better fits your budget and objectives, can promote financial stability and operational efficiency. Moving to a space with more favourable lease terms, may offer a solution to avoid potential financial strain and uncertainties linked to CPI adjustments.

The Barbershop Success Formula: Keep It Simple, Make More Money

Ever feel like running a barbershop— or working as a barber—shouldn’t be this complicated? The constant hustle, managing clients, figuring out pricing, trying to sell products, and keeping the shop busy can feel like a lot. But here’s the thing: success in this industry isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things and doing them well.

You don’t need complex business strategies or fancy marketing gimmicks. You just need to focus on three key things:

Right pricing + Building Client Loyalty + Keeping Clients on Track = A Thriving Barbershop

Let’s break it down.

1. Right Pricing: Stop Underselling Yourself

3. Keeping Clients on Track: Helping Them Look Sharp, Always

One of the biggest differences between a barbershop that’s always busy and one that struggles? The busy shop has clients who know when to come back.

Too many barbers and shop owners set their prices based on what the local competition is charging or what they think clients will pay instead of what their service is actually worth. The result? Overworked, underpaid, and frustrated barbers.

The right price isn’t just about covering costs—it’s about making sure you’re earning enough to grow, invest in better tools, and avoid burnout while making good profit.

How to Price with Confidence:

• Know your worth. If your cuts are sharp and your service is solid, charge accordingly. Clients who value quality will pay for it.

• Look at your costs. Rent, equipment, utilities—these all go up over time, so your prices should too.

• Stop racing to the bottom. If the shop down the street charges peanuts, that’s their problem. Don’t devalue your work just to compete. If your clients are paying peanuts, you’re the monkey...

• Consider memberships. Offering a monthly membership (e.g., unlimited cuts or priority booking) creates predictable income and builds loyalty. If you price right, you don’t have to jam-pack your schedule to make ends meet. You can focus on quality service and actually enjoy your work.

2. Building Client Loyalty: It’s

More Than Just a Haircut

Most barbers focus on getting new clients, but the real money is in keeping the ones you already have. A loyal client is worth way more than a one-time walk-in. They come back regularly, spend more on services and products, and bring their mates with them.

So, how do you turn a first-time client into a long-term one? How to Keep Clients Coming Back:

• Make it personal. Remember their name, their usual cut, and even small details about their life. A good barber isn’t just cutting hair—they’re building a relationship.

• Educate, don’t sell. Instead of pushing products, explain why a specific pomade or beard oil will make their style easier to manage. People buy from barbers they trust.

• Offer memberships or loyalty perks. Even a simple “every 5th cut gets a free beard trim” can make a difference.

• Stay in touch. A quick message—”Hey mate, your fade’s probably growing out by now. Would it be a crazy idea to book you in this week?”—keeps you top of mind.

Loyal clients are the backbone of a successful barbershop. Treat them well, and they’ll stick with you.

A lot of barbers rely on clients to book their next visit, but here’s the truth— most people don’t know when they need a cut. They just come in when their hair starts bugging them. By that point, they’ve already spent a few weeks looking messy.

You can fix that by telling them exactly when they should return to keep their style fresh.

How to Keep Clients on Schedule:

• Set the expectation. “This cut will look sharp for about three weeks— after that, it’ll start losing shape. Let’s get you back in before then.”

• Write it down. If they don’t want to book right away, hand them a card with their expected return date. A little reminder goes a long way.

• Use tech if possible. If your shop has a system, send an automated reminder: “Time to freshen up your cut!” Simple, effective, and keeps your chairs full.

You’re the expert—don’t wait for clients to decide when they need a cut. Guide them, and they’ll thank you for it.

Success in a Barbershop is Simpler Than You

Think

You don’t need to work harder—you just need to work smarter. By following this simple formula:

Right Pricing: Charge what you’re worth, not what you think clients will pay. Building Client Loyalty: Give them a reason to come back, not just a good haircut.

Keeping Clients on Track: Guide them on when to return so they always look their best.

This isn’t rocket science. It’s about doing the basics really well, consistently. Stick to this formula, and your barbershop will be busy, profitable, and stress-free.

So, what’s the one thing you can simplify in your barbershop today?

Pricing For Profit !

“Pricing is the process of determining what a company will receive in exchange for its product or service. Pricing factors are manufacturing cost, market place, competition, market condition, brand and quality of product”.

Definition of Pricing:

A well-chosen price list should do the following three things:

1. Achieve the financial goals of the salon business (profitability)

2. Fit the realities of your market (will clients buy at that price?)

3. Support the product’s market position

Pricing your services correctly involves asking many questions, such as:

• How much to charge for a service

• How do patients value the services and other surrounding intangibles

• What are the pricing objectives?

• How to set the pricing – what are your total operational costs?

• What prices are competitors charging?

• What image do you want the price to convey?

• Do price points already exist for your services?

• How flexible can you be on pricing?

• What are the chances of getting involved in a price war?

Price / Quality Relationship:

The price/quality relationship refers to the perception by most consumers that a relatively high price is a sign of good quality. This is especially true when it comes to hair and barbering services.

Premium Pricing:

This is the strategy of consistently pricing at, or near the high end of the possible price range to help attract status- conscious clients. This high pricing of premium services and products is used to enhance and reinforce a luxury image. Clients will buy a premium priced service or product because:

• They believe the high price is an indication of good quality.

• The believe it to be a sign of self-worth.

• They require a flawless service – the cost of the service going wrong is too high to buy anything but the best.

Setting the right price is one of the most difficult decisions to make when starting a business or introducing a new service. If you hit on the right price, your clients will be happy, your profits will be higher, and your bottom line will be healthy. Many salon owners make the mistake of setting up a flawed pricing structure. As a result, they find themselves working too hard for too little. It requires a basic understanding of both your financial and business goals.

Common Pricing Mistakes in Salon Business:

Weak controls on discounting and special offers

Not tracking competitor selling prices

Price increases carried out poorly

Not factoring in all running expenses

Selling services under cost price

Establishing the right price for your services can feel intimidating, especially when starting off. Retaining clients while still earning profits is crucial, as making pricing decisions can to the wrong way very easily. Pricing your services too low may lead to being shortchanged while overpricing can scare away potential patients.

The challenge is to strike a balance between affordability and profitability. With research, analysis and execution, salon owners can comfortably price their offerings without fear. Proper pricing allows businesses to stay competitive, profitable and sustainably grow over time.

My top tips in setting your prices:

1. Keep your prices realistic:

A realistic price is the price you set after taking into consideration various factors, such as: the direction of your business, your cost structure,

resources and financial goals.

2. Cover all costs:

The price of each service should cover the cost associated with it, its contribution to overheads and profit. A successful strategy is one that results in the most dollars after all the costs have been met.

3. Check your prices against inflation:

Your prices must keep up with inflation. Inflation increases your cost of doing business, with the price of your materials, overheads and other costs increasing. If you maintain your prices despite raising inflation, you will erode your profit margin.

4. Include the value of your time in pricing:

Avoid committing the mistake of not including a salary for yourself. Your time is very valuable, and you need to include it when calculating your prices.

5. Remember, clients are not always looking for the lowest price: Price is not always the topmost concern of clients. Many clients are willing to pay premium prices for quality services, speedy delivery, helpful and professional customer service, excellent product knowledge and advice.

6. Use discounts with care:

Offering discounts can be a good strategy for encouraging repeat sales, bundling sales and early payment from clients. You can use discounts to stimulate demand for your products and services during downtimes. Just make sure you don’t give out the wrong signal or give the impression that your business is in difficulty.

Pricing is important for several reasons, not least because it will determine the profit margins for your clinic, and in the end……. your own salary!

The ART + SCIENCE of Pricing Why Most Barbers Get It Wrong

Pricing isn’t just a number - it’s a belief system. After travelling the world in 2024 during ‘The Un-Limited World Tour’, speaking on stages, running workshops, and meeting thousands of barberswe’ve seen the same thing play out over and over again: barbers undervaluing themselves. And it’s not because they lack skill - it’s because they lack pricing strategy and the belief system that backs it up.

Raising your prices isn’t just about charging more. It’s about understanding the ART and the SCIENCE behind pricing - and using both to create a business that actually supports your life, not just drains it.

There’s Two Sides of Pricing: The Art + The Science

Most barbers price their services based on “what feels right”. That’s the ART, the EMOTION. But pricing also needs logic, numbers, and a demand-driven strategy. That’s the science. When you blend the two, pricing becomes less about fear and more about facts.

The ART of Pricing = Your belief system, confidence, storytelling, and perceived value.

The SCIENCE of Pricing: Market demand, business costs, supply and demand, and strategic positioning.

Let’s dive deeper into both.

The Art of Pricing: Your Mindset = Your Money. Most barbers have a bad relationship with money - and don’t even realise it. If you’ve ever thought: “If I raise my prices, I’ll lose clients.” “I don’t think I’m worth that much.” “No one in my area charges that, so I can’t either.” …you’re operating from a scarcity mindset. And that will keep you undercharging and overworking forever. The truth? Pricing is about confidence. Your clients won’t believe your worth until YOU do. If you don’t feel valuable, neither will they.

For example, there’s a famous barber in Melbourne called HH who charges $250 per haircut - from his mother’s spare room. When we spoke to him, he told us he has 150+ new client requests per month. Why? Because he tells his story better than most and positions himself as high value. This is the power of perception.

If Nando’s can charge more for a meal in the UK than some of the world’s best barbers charge for a haircut, we have a serious problem.

The Science of Pricing: The Numbers Don’t Lie

The biggest pricing mistake barbers make? They guess. They pick a number that “feels right” instead of looking at the data which is:

• Supply & Demand – If you’re booked solid, you’re too cheap.

• Profit Margins – If you aren’t profiting after expenses, you’re running a hobby, not a business.

• Market Positioning – Do you want to be the cheapest, the best, or the most convenient? You can’t be all three. If you’re fully booked, raising prices isn’t an option - it’s a necessity. The logic is simple: demand dictates price. When demand is high, increase price and filter for better quality clients. There’s no amount of emotion that changes the numbers. If your business isn’t profitable, the numbers don’t lie.

How to Raise Your Prices Without Losing Clients

Most barbers do it wrong. They wake up one day and slap an extra $10$20 on their service… then wonder why their clients push back and don’t come back.

We asked ourselves one day: what if there was a better way? “The Price Increase Run-In” is a strategy we use in The Un-Limited Barber Mentorship™. Instead of surprising clients with a price jump, we prepare them.

Here’s how you can do it:

1. Announce it in advance (4-6 weeks before - minimum).

2. Explain why (inflation, demand, better service experience).

3. Market aggressively to attract new clients at your new price point. 4. Set expectations - the old price is gone, and this is the new standard. Clients don’t like surprises. But when you control the narrative, they accept it.

The REAL Cost of Not Raising Your Prices

Let’s do some quick math. If you currently make $50K per year and want to make $100K, the cost of taking no action is $50K per year. Every year you don’t adjust your prices; you’re leaving thousands on the table.

If your prices haven’t increased by a minimum of 10% in the last 12 months, you’re already making less than last year because of inflation.
