Color your life – and your quilts – with the vibrant colors of a flower garden. A primitive garden!

The colors are Poppy and Marigold, Aster and Peony, and the prints are small-scaled. Use them for the small piecing I love or for bold bursts of color, and for adding a bit of color to a scrap quilts. To give my garden the foundation it needs to bloom, we’ve used my favorite muslin shades of Tallow, Paper Bag and Pie Crust and created Flower Garden Backgrounds. These shirting-like prints are the sort that I’ll use for years to come, they’re like “heirloom seeds”… or the seeds for my heirlooms and yours.

by Dandelions remind me of growing up in the Midwest and seeing the cheery, yellow blooms pop up in the middle of the yard. While the adults saw them as annoying weeds, we saw simple, happy flowers that made charming bouquets, could be twisted into necklaces and rubbed onto our skin to make a lovely golden color. Even better than the yellow beauties were the mature puff balls of seeds. We knew our dreams were sure to come true if we could blow all the seeds off the stem in one big breath. The graceful dance of seeds traveling in the breeze gave flight to our wishes on warm sunny days.

A year ago, I was looking forward to moving my home and shop from Melbourne to Torquay Beach. I must have had the beach in mind when I named the prints Flip Flops and Rockpools, Sea Spray and Sunday Picnic. The colors are beach-bright, 1960s mod – shades of green, gold, pink, blue and purple. I hope you are looking forward to using my newest fabric line. –Jen Kingwell

Now that you have that song playing in your head as I have for the last several months as I have been working with these fabrics, let me introduce you to my new collection, Sunnyside Up. Sunnyside Up continues my love of a warm, happy palette featuring all of the colors of the rainbow. From warm reds to sunny yellows, all the way to a beautiful orchid purple, this collection has a dash of all of my favorite colors. Flowers are another one of my favorite things – “these are a few of my favorite things"... sung in your best Julie Andrews’ voice of course – so you will find Sunnyside Up is filled with flowers, big and small. I have also added a Sunny panel fabric to the mix which I am especially excited about. This panel is the perfect jumping off point for not only quilts but pillows, bags, aprons, pouches... you name it. I hope this collection brightens your day and brings sunshine your way.

Harriet Hanson Robinson

BCD 801/BCD 801G Winding Bobbins 63"x73"

(1825-1911) began working as a bobbin doffer at a textile mill in Lowell, Massachusetts at the age of 10 to help support her widowed mother and family. Her job was to exchange full bobbins with empty ones on the spinning looms, a task she performed for fifteen minutes every hour, earning $2.00 a week. At age 11, when the mill workers went on strike over lowering wages she eagerly participated. After the strike ended, Harriet continued working and was eventually promoted to “drawing in girl” – the process of using long hooks to grab threads and draw them through the harness and reeds of a loom after the warp threads have been loaded. Harriet continued to work at the mill until she married. In her later years, Harriet actively participated in the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

My Inspiration

The prints and colors of Harriet’s Handwork were inspired by Harriet, and by an antique quilt in my collection dating to 1820-1840. 31577 11*
