hen I was a little girl, my mother would tuck me in under my favorite quilt and tell me the story of Little Red Riding Hood. I’d close my eyes and imagine an enchanting backdrop of pine trees, woodland blooms, and wild roses. I’d pack a basket of double chocolate cupcakes and peppermint tea and head down the path to Granny’s. Along the way, I might stop to pick luscious berries and trace my fingers along the bark of the trees. When I arrived, sometimes I’d meet a Big Bad Wolf waiting underneath her granny square quilt. Other times, I’d arrive early and find Granny knitting a new pair of soft pink mittens just for me. Of course, my childhood is long gone now, but I when I like to revisit it, I find myself taking a dreamy stroll down that old familiar path Into the Woods. -Vanessa Goertzen

O
ur inspiration for Elementary came from one of our most popular fabric lines. We frequently get e-mails asking when we are coming out with a second version of our first fabric line for Moda, Authentic. We generally don’t like to repeat a collection using the exact same colors, so we thought we would do something similar to Authentic but change it up a bit. We kept the black, cream and tan, but replaced the lime green in the original collection with our new favorite colora beautiful light blue. We love the result and think it compliments Authentic beautifully. The theme is very school-like, but not too juvenile. We love it for all different kinds of projects, especially those for boys. The Rugby pattern is perfect for either a baby quilt or graduation quilt- just use the year of the big event for the applique. We think the Picnic Plaid pattern may be our favorite. It is designed to make the finished quilt look like a gingham pattern. We hope you enjoy sewing with Elementary as much as we enjoyed designing it!

resh and playful, Bonnie and Camille’s newest line was inspired by Ruby’s favorite little sister, Kate. As little girls they spent summers out on the porch swing, telling stories and stitching. This cheery line is full of Kate’s favorites: red, aqua, and navy, dainty flowers, vintage prints, and pretty little scallops. There’s nothing sweeter than sisters. These sweet prints are twice as nice in a select variety of super soft flannels, too!

We are a family of collectors. Not of fine art (though that would be nice too) but of the more mundane conkers, pebbles, feathers, fossils and shells. My boys became collectors the very moment they were able to put things in their pockets. We have an old glass fronted cupboard in our hall filled to the brim with such treasures- the boys call it the Curiosity Cabinet and if you visit one day and are very lucky they will sit you down 53
in front of it and share the stories of how they came by such interesting things. So, you see it was really only a matter of time before our nature collecting became a book and even more natural for the book to become a fabric collection. Turns out I’ve been collecting ideas for years, too! I hope A Field Guide inspires you to create quilts that celebrate the beauty that is all around us.
