Joanna Figueroa Channels Autumn with Cinnamon & Cream by Linzee Kull McCray @seamswrite Joanna Figueroa’s distinctive color palette is somewhere between pastels, primary colors, and dark tones. “I read once about ‘forgotten colors’ and that’s how I think of them,” she says of the aesthetic that she’s dubbed Fresh Vintage. “They’re colors used in late 19th-century labelsand travel posters—slightly soft, slightly warm tones that I’ve updated for today.” That color sensibility is reflected in her new line, Cinnamon and Cream. It’s also a nod to autumn, her favorite time of year. “The air is crisp, leaves are falling, it’s soup and sweater weather, and the colors are just so inspirational,” says Joanna of the collection that’s a return to some of her warm fall favorites. “The line is an ode to the feel of fall.” Seasonal changes like these may be subtle in the San Francisco Bay area where Joanna lives, but creativity is strong. When she and husband Eric moved to the region in the mid-1990s, Joanna discovered Thimblecreek, a local quilt shop with a vibrant community that included future Moda designers Anne Sutton and Sandy Klop. It wasn’t long before Joanna was an employee and teacher there.
2
A Pattern for Success That’s also when she realized she preferred creating her own patterns and began writing them for her students. At the same time, she started Figlets, a company named for the moniker she and Eric gave their three children. She sewed small items like table runners, pillows, and wall hangings and sold them at arts-and-craft fairs and collectives. Quickly, she realized the challenge of turning a profit and pivoted to pattern design. In 2002, Joanna started Fig Tree Quilts and attended her first Quilt Market with 24 patterns. “I can’t believe I’m hitting my 20-year anniversary in the business,” she says, awed by the passing of time and all that’s transpired.
In 2004, Joanna met with Moda’s then-design director Cheryl Freydberg. Joanna imagined it would be a quick introduction, but impressed by her design concepts Cheryl told Joanna, “We’ve been looking for something like this—you have two weeks to submit a collection.” Joanna says “I said ‘Absolutely, I can do that!’ but at the same time thought ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do that!’ It was trial by fire.” Now, nearly 50 lines of fabric later, Joanna is confident of the process and her style. She’s also designed hundreds of patterns including those for mini-quilts, appliqué, bags, and more, including many for precuts. Traditional quilts inspire her, and giving them a fresh spin is her forte. Joanna’s goal is to create patterns that look intricate and complex but are simple for quilters to construct.
Energy to Spare Joanna thrives on creating new designs, seasonal projects, and block-of-the-month offerings. Recently co-authoring A Scrapbook of Quilts with friend Carrie Nelson let her dip her toe back into the book world and she enjoys
designing quilt-related products including enamel pins, zipper pulls, notebooks, and notions. She shares photos, videos, resources, and projects via Instagram and her Fresh Figs blog. Joanna and Eric are about to be empty nesters—their daughter heads to college this fall, following in the footsteps of her two older brothers. But the couple won’t be resting on their laurels: instead, they’re renovating the 1,500 square-foot barn on a 10-acre farm they purchased about an hour from their home. They’ve installed floors and electricity and envision the barn as a teaching venue in the near future. “The property itself is a long-term project,” says Joanna, who predicts a few goats and Highland cattle will share the acreage with them someday. “We have a lot of energy. I’m not sure we’ll ever slow down!”

As much as I love exploring new places, I have come to terms with the fact that I am and will always be a homebody at heart. There is just something about the comfort of coming home and changing into comfy clothes, curling up in a worn chair and reading a favorite book that can’t be topped. When I was designing this collection I kept coming back to that feeling and hoped I could make Dwell feel a little like coming home. The beautiful florals in navy and green paired with perfect shades of pink and gray remind me of my favorite chair in my childhood home while the classic ticking stripe and coordinating basics include some elements from my current home. Marvin J Ashton put it best when he said “Home should be an anchor, a port in a storm, a refuge, a happy place in which to dwell, a place where we are loved and where we can love.” I hope the quilts and projects you make with this collection will always remind you, wherever you may be, of home.

This is one of my all-time favorite color combinations, and this new Red & White Gatherings speaks to my heart. It combines the crisp whites and brilliant reds that I see in the antique quilts made by our foremothers. To add a contemporary twist, I've included a deep, claret red for a multitude of reds. These fabrics are perfect for quilts that fit every season, from Christmas to Valentine's Day, Independence Day to just because you love red and white quilts.

Blues, cool and crisp. Buttery yellows, warm and cozy. Chocolates, just delicious. Frame these colors with soft ivory and you have Amelia’s Blues. Inspired by the life of Amelia Bloomer, 1818-1894, I've chosen fabrics from my collection of antique quilts for the prints in this collection. Amelia was a suffragist, a social activist, and the editor of the temperance newspaper, The Lily. Her interest in the reform of women’s clothing led to her promoting the Rational Dress Movement during the Victorian Era. She especially advocated the wearing of a form of pants called pantaloons, as being sensible and practical under a short dress. Women accepted the idea of wearing pantaloons, mostly in the form of undergarments, and while Amelia did not invent the pantaloons, the nickname bloomers was adopted. NOVEMBER DELIVERY

by NOVEMBER DELIVERY Dimension. Depth. Color. Those are all words that are used to describe crossweaves, a fabric woven with warp and weft threads of two different colors. As with chambrays, the two colors give the fabric a new kind of energy. For 2022, Moda is introducing a new collection of Crossweaves, closer in weight and hand to our quilting cottons, and in a vibrant selection of color combinations, many chosen to work with the collections of Moda's Designers. **The "warp" threads run lengthwise, and the "weft" is the crosswise threads.

NOVEMBER DELIVERY Painted as a celebration of life, new growth, and the little things that bring us joy, Eufloria was an absolute joy to paint. With so much happy color, I hope these euphoric flowers feel riotous and free, and that they bring a smile to your face, and a desire to seize the day. There are two panels for Eufloria. Inspired by a rug, I painted Superbloom with some of my favorite flowers, arranged in a wild, joyful arrangement. This packaged panel will make a spectacular whole-cloth quilt. A second yardagebased panel has four designs that can be used in a quilt, though pillows and bags are what comes to mind for me. I hope Eufloria brings you as much joy as it's bringing me.

Bake up a collection of pies, spiced breads and of course a quilt or two with our newest collection Nutmeg, a follow up to Cider and the beloved Persimmon. Let Nutmeg be your guide into all things Fall. Crisp autumn mornings were the touches of frost pop against the vibrant colors of the changing season. Dancing leaves in shades of coral-orange, goldenrod yellows and warm faded browns play wonderfully with the beautiful blues of the sky. Each year, I plant Zinnias lining my front walkway. They start out small, with tiny leaves and just a single bud to indicate that a flower will emerge. In the arid desert heat, it is sometimes difficult to find flowers that can thrive, but these little plants dig in and find water deep below the surface. They grow quickly, and soon grow tall, vibrant and fragrant, easily becoming the neighborhood showstoppers. I fill dozens of vases for my home, take bouquets to neighbors, and clip spent blooms, and I still have hundreds of flowers to enjoy from my porch. I created this collection, Zinnia, to celebrate the beauty and resilience of these hardy flowers that retain their beauty long after other blossoms are spent and faded. They also keep their blooms until the literal frost of winter kisses their petals. I hope you enjoy these prints inspired by late summer Zinnias.
