scape the nitty gritty of the city for a sunny park, climb a tree and catch a glimpse into the imagination of Momo. Puffy white clouds fill the soft blue skies, and from your bird’s eye view you spot critters frolicking in the nearby forest and rolling hills of wildflowers. The Chirp Chirp of songbirds high in the tree top’s lacy canopy will make your heart sing along to their happy, carefree song.

r e n g i s e d INSPIRATION his is Julie And this is Eric and here's how we created S'more Love. It all started years and years ago with a scrapbook line called Mr. Campy. Mr. Campy was a marshmallow man that had a chocolate bar for a best friend. I drew sketches of the characters and sent them to an employee of ours to create in Illustrator.
That's usually my job, but I was on a business trip. I remember when Eric called me and told me he had started a new line with a marshmallow man. He was super excited, which for Eric meant that he was talking in his normal voice and saying words like, "I think it's really good." Julie wasn't so sure about it. It was over the phone, and you were telling me that you were building a line around a dancing, smiling marshmallow. When I saw it I loved it, but over the phone I couldn't quite imagine where you were going and sometimes, you do veer off the path a little.
01
9
I don't know what you're talking about, me veer?!?! Never! That's just called creative genius Julie.

Mr. Campy and his chocolate bar best friend. 03 Original Mr. Campy line in softer more muted colors. 04 Eric and Julie's updated hipper campers. 05 Forest Eric & Julie's favorite pattern. 06 S'more Love fabric swatches.
The design with the leaves was the most popular pattern in Mr. Campy. I decided to leave it in the line for the re-release, but I redrew all the leaves to make them more modern. Then I brightened up the color palette from very muted colors to more intense versions. We also updated the campers. They are much more hip now! Then I created all the other patterns being inspired by some of Eric's sketches and mid-century design.
02
So, Mr. Campy was released in 2008. It was a huge success which for me means that I was right!
My favorite pattern is Forest. I was going for trees against sky and I just love how the design turned out.
Something I usually get to say!
05
That's my favorite pattern too.
Whatever. Anyway, after the line was discontinued, everyone kept asking for us to bring it back or make a new camping line. When we opened the files to take a look at those options, we decided that we could update the line, add some new patterns, brighten the colors and it would be a whole lot of fun all over again.
You're just saying that because you know I'm right! This is me giving up.
03
We had been watching a lot of Mad Men at the time and Eric is a huge fan of mid-century modern design anyway, so we decided to take the line in that direction. He began redrawing the characters and adding new ones like the owl and fish.
06
04
While I was doing that, Julie started working on the patterns.

nne you are known for sophisticated baby lines of fabrics. Your newest line of fabrics, Celebration has a different look. Tell us about that. I’ll always love sophisticated, chic fabrics, but designing Celebration was great fun. The colors are fresh, the look is a bit more modern and I hope the two color ways will appeal to moms and grandma’s everywhere. Do you have a favorite Celebration? I love celebrating Christmas and Easter, and it’s hard to choose between the two. Of course Easter is time to bring out the bunnies, but Christmas pulls me in with holiday decorating and family. Where did you find inspiration for this line? Grandkids? If so tell us about your grandkids. My youngest granddaughter, Miss Lily, is the inspiration for so many things I do. She’s fun, full of energy and all I have to do is think of her and I’m inspired. I can see her influence in a lot of my Celebration line. What do your grandkids call you? Lily calls me Oma, it’s German for grandma. My other grandkids call me grandma. Tell me about the Boy version and the girl version. The girl’s version is so “girly” with pastel ginghams and dots. It’s perfect for dresses, accessories, hair bows, purses and of course, bedding and quilts. If you can dream it up for a little girl, Celebration has a fabric for it! What little boy can resist elephants filled with little sail boats, stars and dots? The boy’s version is filled with bright, happy colors. The colors and patterns are “all boy” with stars, dots, and of course that red and blue gingham. Do you need to be surrounded by design in order to be inspired? IF so what? Magazines? Colors? etc. I’m always collecting and I scavenge though flea markets, old magazines, catalogs, garden books etc.

I clip pictures, colors and save everything in sketch books. It’s a little like scrap booking without the fancy pages, and I’ve done it for years. When I’m actually drawing designs, I need to have absolute quiet and neat, clean area to work in. Does Chelsea have a favorite print in this collection? Chelsea loves the birdies print! She approved the artwork. I know you are crazy about wool. Why? I compare working with wool to coloring in a color book. The look is simple and the wool designs speak for themselves. I love the texture, color and look wool brings to appliqué. It’s the perfect

medium for a beginner and success is almost guaranteed. No edges to turn under; just cut and stitch. You’ve used blanket stitch appliqué for 2 of the quilts in this collection. Isn’t that unusual for you? I learned to blanket stitch by machine before I learned to appliqué by hand, so returning to this method was second nature for me. Blanket stitching by machine is quick and easy. The method makes it possible to have a finished appliqué quilt in a short period of time. The cats and dogs in my quilts, look really cute with a decorative blanket stitch. There’s a time and place for every form of appliqué. It’s good to be open to them all.

Pat Sloan on her Inspiration behind Bobbins and Bits. I do not come from a family who sews. My mother didn't sew, neither did my grandmothers or my great-grandmothers. “Where did you come from? my mom often asks.

R
eally... where did I get this need to play with fabric? I learned to sew clothing in a 9th grade Home Economics class in Brusels, Belgium. It was love at first stitch! I must have had the most amazing teacher as I know my clothing was awful. However, I don't remember her ever being negative about my projects. During those years, my mom bought me ALL the fabric I wanted. My parents bought me a “Genie” Sewing machine, because they saw I not only loved to sew but needed to sew. Later when I left for college, they bought me another machine. After all, a girl could not go to college without a sewing machine! Yep, my parents…..the BEST PARENTS IN THE WORLD. Because of this love for all things sewing, I wanted to do a “sewing” themed fabric line. Bobbins and Bits celebrates my obsession with scissors, bobbins, and all the little bits that go along with sewing. Pure happy colors are my signature colors. And I am in love with putting batiks and cottons together. I am excited to offer you a happy “sewing” themed fabric line with florals and hidden items... can you see the bobbins in the flowers? Pat Sloan's tips for Online Communities Pat, you are considered to be the social media guru in the quilt world. Why is that? With a degree in computer science, my first career was in computers. Yep, I'm a geek! My love of the Internet is legendary. I have been involved with building quilt communities online since 1999, and I love it. For me, it is all about SHARING. For my fabric lines I start the excitement with partial photos of the line. This is followed with a timeline of when it will be at your shops and then finally the pattern information in photos. Also, I host giveaways to build excitement and have my friends make projects in their various styles using my fabrics. All these types of online “sharing” events help to generate excitement about the potential of the fabric and adds interest for the readers. For instance, I also include extra information about my Aurifil thread lines that match the fabrics. What are some tips for quilt stores to use social media as merchandising tools?
On your facebook page, blog, newsletter you can create some easy collages—using such aides as picmonkey.com which is fantastic and free. Here are a few examples of what can be done with the Bobbins & Bits line: (All of these posts should be in separate steps to add to the excitement.) *Show the Bobbins and Bits logo, some individual fabric pieces and the edge dots. *Show patterns and any additional project ideas. *Show the fabric as it arrives in your shop: Such as: pictures of the unopened boxes, then photos of you unpacking the boxes, and finally, putting the bolts on the shelves. *Have your staff pick a favorite print or color and share why.
PHOTO CURTESY OF PAT SLOAN
***Get people excited with great photos and YOUR excitement about the fabric. It does take a tiny bit of planning to remember to take those photos... but it is SO worth it for the excitement factor. *If you are having a class, why not also offer an online sew along? You will have finished all the class preparation, so capitalize on that and take the class viral! Post the information on your blog and facebook page. People cannot always get to the shop, but they want to belong. They want to be a part of all the fun. As the host of the American Patchwork and Quilting Radio show, you get the chance to interview quilters from all over the world. Tell us a little about this. I'm very proud to have Moda as a sponsor of my radio show with American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine! All the shows are recorded so you can stream them in your shop. You can play the shows during your sew-ins and encourage your

hat’s old is new in Moda’s latest line of Contempo fabrics. Antique prints are chic and modern in three fresh, bold color stories: Berrylicious, Seaglass, and Spice are all quite nice and sure to inspire a vast variety of projects from modern to traditional. The mood is minimal and all about color with an array of Bella solids to coordinate and mix with the clean, simple prints. A traditional log cabin makes a striking wholecloth or chop it up and let the patterns play!

our newest collection is named Road 15. Tell us what your inspiration for this line was. This collection was inspired by our childhood home which my mom and dad just moved from after over 40 years. It was definitely bittersweet to leave the place we loved so much- on Road 15. The entire address is 14711 County Road 15, but we thought that was a little too long a title for a fabric collection. However, we invited our blog readers to participate by providing us with their addresses for one of the prints. We stopped at about 1300- and hopefully we didn’t leave too many out!
What elements are important for the design, how does it come to life? Our fabric collections always start with a theme. Once the theme is developed we go through the process of selecting a color scheme. Nailing down the theme and color sometimes is the longest part of the process for us. Now comes the fun part actually designing the fabric. We are all about text so we know there will be at least 2 of the prints that contain typography. Coordinating prints are then created to finish out the collection. Your color palettes are always such fresh soothing colors. Where do find your color inspiration? Color is sometimes one of the hardest things for us to decide. We always want to create something new and fresh but the 3 of us are all drawn to the same color palette and find it difficult to branch out and use colors that we are not fond of. Our source of inspiration for color comes from shopping. We love to go out and find new colors that are being used in the fashion or home décor world and try to incorporate them in our designs. What is your favorite print in this collection? Why? One of our favorite prints in this collection is the one with the houses, called Main Street and the versatility of the print called One Way. However, the most sentimental design is the one with the trees, City Park. Our old home had two cottonwood trees that have stood for more than 75 yearsand I’m sure that this print will remind me of those two beloved trees for years to come. And of course another favorite is the houses paired up with the
list of addresses. These two prints sum up the entire meaning of the name of the collection Road 15. There are 3 of us so I guess it is okay to have more than one favorite in this line. Is there a favorite Road trip you took as a family? If so , is there a back seat driver? Growing up we didn’t take too many family vacations. The only time I remember us going anywhere was when we headed to Pueblo, CO every summer for the Colorado State Fair. Times were different then – no seat belts, no electronics, and no air conditioning. But we did have licorice and cheese and crackers. I can still remember my mom making us cheese and crackers with the can of Easy Cheese and Ritz crackers. What is your personal definition of creativity? I looked up the real definition of creativity and it states: The use of the imagination or original ideas. I believe we are all creative in our own special way whether it be in the art studio, the kitchen, finances , or coping with everyday life. We all have to be creative at some time!

Working together as a mother and 2 daughter team must lead to interesting stories. Do each of you have your areas of specialty? If so, what? It is interesting indeed! The people you work with are the same people you have to sit across the table at Thanksgiving Dinner so you can’t stay mad at each other for too long. We do have a good time and feel very fortunate to be in the situation we are in. Since there are 3 of us when we have to decide something it is usually 2 against 1 and not always the same 2 against the same 1. We do work well together and contribute equally with thoughts and ideas! How do you keep up to date with current trends? Off to the shopping mall we go! Whenever we are in a rut we hop in the car to our favorite stores and hope that we come home inspired with new ideas.

lues as soft as a summer’s sky and browns as warm as freshly turned earth waiting for seeds to be sprinkled in furrows are the essence of our new fabric line, Nature’s Basket. You will love the sweet prints so reminiscent of antique samplers - the perfect choice for a quilt that will feel as comfy as your favorite chambray shirt and look as though it was made long ago. Heart pinkeeps tied with a bit of ribbon can be made quickly for dear friends. Or tuck one into a fabric-covered sewing box with a packet of pins, needles and thread for the beginning stitcher in your life. We love the touch of warmth and calm Nature’s Basket adds to our projects and so will you!

ed and white is crisp, clean, homey, and inviting. It’s the warm palette of berries and ream, gingham aprons, Grandma’s kitchen canisters, and wonderful quilts. It reminds of us of polka-dots, peppermint candies, and antique transfer ware. The Winter holidays of Christmas and Valentine’s Day just wouldn’t be the same without red and white. In the spring of 2012 we went to 7KH ,QÀQLWH 9DULHW\ 6KRZ 7KUHH &HQWXULHV RI 5HG DQG :KLWH 4XLOWV that was sponsored by the American Folk Art Museum. This truly special show whetted our appetite and we started sketching fabric and quilts as we toured the Park Avenue Armory. 0LGZLQWHU 5HGV and the accompanying quilts is our homage to this inspirational show.
