Models Earn M

O

N

E

Y

It is of paramount value that as a model you embrace the fact that modelling is a career like any other. Being a career, it is therefore a pre-requisite that you take your modelling career seriously and consider it business; hence the need to get paid or at least get a decent income from the practice. Though you can earn money in various ways as a model, there are some pointers that one has to look out for when you enter the modelling business. A model earns money by signing a contract (directly or t h ro u g h a n a g e n c y ) i n w h i c h s h e re c e i ve s remuneration in return for typically two things. 1. His or her time and her presence at a photo shoot, a venue or an event. Also your co-operation with the organisers to allow pictures to be taken, to wear certain clothes, adopt certain attitudes that serve the purpose of the event. This could be to pose for photos around a car, pose for marketing images, whatever. 2. The distribution rights to your image. This can be worldwide or for a given geography, forever or for a deďŹ ned time period, for a speciďŹ c usage. In most cases the money is paid to your agency and the agency then pays you after deducting their share. She or he will get paid more depending on how broad these rights are, and principally how high proďŹ le or well known they are. They can get paid peanuts because they are unknown or millions of them are chasing after people like Charlize Theron promoting Dior's J'Adore pe.

VOL 09 More than just a pretty face

Tanyara wa. Rebecca. Kwerengwe You have heard people say, "I'm more than just a pretty face". But what does it really mean to be more than just a pretty face, especially in the modelling industry? So, it's also common knowledge that when people think of models, all they picture is the glitz and glamour, makeup, runways and photoshoots. However, modelling goes beyond that. Firstly, it works as a way of building and promoting brands. So, one should be focused on selling ideas, products and services to add weight to the modelling career. The second aspect of modelling would be the promotion of young women. This comes through giving them a chance to feel beautiful, comfortable their own skin and thus build con dence, morale and self-esteem. Besides building their own con dence, models should act as an inspiration to other youths in the society. Lastly, as most models are female, the profession paves way for women's voices to be heard and have their views out there. For example, not a lot if men would come up with the initiative to advocate for the rights of the girl child or start a campaign for free sanitary wear. So, all in all, female models need to build a base for their careers to remain relevant to society, become advocates for fellow women to move away from the usual stereotypes and earn respect, promote self-con dence as well as hope for the girl child. In other words, be more than just a pretty face.

Personal Fashion

Facts

UNREVEALED

BY SILAJI SAIDI

Fashion. Globally dominating; in all corners, streets and allies. Can you define fashion? Not the word, but the realistic meaning. As many but not all say, "Fashion starts with what you wear (as in clothing oneself)." Some go on to think fashion ends on clothing trends and formation. It's their view and they are not wrong in their point of mindset. For other fox, the salt addition of hairstyles conclude the fashion debate. Again, their mindset. In all this commotion of trying to define fashion to the world, no one is wrong. Now listen. This is what I say about it. Fashion is you. Simply what you make out of yourself. Fashion is how you want to define it and look at it. You don't let anyone tell you to put on shorts because trousers or long jeans look hideous (yucky) on you. If you hate shorts and what that trouser, that makes you look puffy, wear them. Fashion is not all about the beauty content, it is creativeness (positive or negative). Wearing, hairstyling etc something you don't like doesn't make it less fashion. It makes it more. You are simply busy promoting what you don't love that someone does. Diving into a certain dictionary with a certain contextual meaning; it foretells my idea, vision, and definition of FASHION. It goes on to say, "FASHION is the latest and most admired style in clothes and cosmetics and behavior." Get this, it does say anything about looking good. Fashion is simply what makes your heart skip a beat. Saying someone's style is bad fish does not exterminate the meaning of FASHION. FASHION will forever remain neutral to all human forms and animal forms. Being ashamed of a style you dearly love is a disgrace to naturalistic trends. If your send of style is deeply unattractive (bad fish) and it's not your aim to portray a rotten picture to the world. Find designers or fashion drivers to modify/spice your style, not change it. This also holds hands with the reason why you ought remain the penetration of your fashion sense.

Relevance of Social Media & Pageants

BY LEWIS NYAMAKOSI

Taking a look at most of pageants taking place in recent years , we see that there is an increase in the use of social media platforms, popular ones being Intsagram and Facebook. They are being used for voting for favorite contestant, commonly known as, People's Choice Award. Social media is a drawback to some of the contestants as they may not own any Facebook and Instagram account then they are forced to open an account so that they can market themselves and get better votes for them to be awarded the people's choice award. Furthermore those who already have accounts with a huge following have a greater chance of winning as they start the race at a better stage than their counterparts. This is because they we already have the knowledge of how they can navigate around the platform and also have knowledge of how they can convince people to vote for them. In recent reports, there has been word that some contestants are making use of ghost votes and vote buying, hence devaluing of the whole pageant. Though the use of social media has all these disadvantages it also has some advantages which include live streaming. People across the world can watch the event as it take place through live streaming the event. Advertising through social media has proved very powerful as a single post can reach millions of people in only a click. As the contestants strive to get the highest number of likes and/or followers, they spread information . Pageants stakeholders can also determine and predict the number of people to attend an event. This can be done through the use of creating an event on platform like Facebook. Note well, the number of people who say would attend on Facebook does not necessarily reect the actual number of attendants, but may only give an idea or estimate.

PLUS Models SIZE I am a woman with a big heart; I am an able woman. My body doesn't de ne me but what's within me does. Shapes and sizes do not matter, a good heart and the inner person does. I have a big body which I'm proud of and I'm proud to say that I'm plus size. Societies have to accept a plussize women and not push her into discomfort. Why sideline plussize women when they can do all things like any of you? Why kill her con dence with hurtful criticism and constant mockery as if she chose to be like that? Okay then, after she becomes depressed and you go on to say that, ..she is a disturbed woman.. , when you are the cause of it all; then she commits suicide and kills herself because she cannot take the abuse anymore and you say, ..she is crazy.. .

Curvy & Beautiful

SOCIETY LISTEN: YOU ARE MORE WRONG THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE RIGHT.

Do not discriminate us; give us the same position and attention as everyone else. Why should we struggle to get attention when you can simply notice us? Consider and involve us in every single industry without looking at our shapes and sizes. Plussize women, I'm also one of you, I have a big body and understand how you feel and here I am a fellow sister ghting for us to be seen fairly as anyone else. Let's not hide any longer, come out of your shadows and let's prove the world wrong by showing what we can do; we are able and we can. Having started this movement for us as plussize women, I encourage each of us to push to get the attention we desire; to step up to say that we are worthy, to say No to depression and being miserable, we can't be disturbed and de nitely, suicide is not an option. With this, ladies, walk with me in this movement; if you need some to talk to, walk with, I'm here for you with a huge family behind me that is also helping me in this movement (@TJay Fam). Contact me, I'll listen when you want me to and I'll also try to be there whenever you call for me. PLEASE come through and walk with me. Go on and like my Facebook page @Faith deony. Need Help? Big people bodied young woman do not have conďŹ dence in themselves many can do great but the greatness is never let out because of: 1. Lack of conďŹ dence 2. Fear of being mocked 3. Fear of being judged without even showing they've got to show 4. Being looked down on 5. Lack of support And other factors I know of three Ladies who committed suicide simply because they faced consistent mockery and criticism about being a plus size

I lost a friend a day before yesterday because of this same issue her boyfriend said a lot and when I say I a lot a mean A LOT insulting her and so on so she took termic and poison and she died. She has always felt bad about her body and growing up she faced these challenges of being made fun of so all she needed was someone to talk to and someone to support her and be there for her and I wasn't there for her as I was supposed to. So I know a lot of plus size Young woman young Ladies out there have the same problem or even worse and many have so much to show the world but the don't cause they don't believe in themselves I know starting this won't bring my friend back but I know I might help someone so I just wanna be a shoulder to those people I know it won't be easy but I'm willing to help. So I'm starting something for the plus size young woman to help them see themselves worthy rather than shying away from the world or committing suicide because of being big or being mocked due to their beautiful size.

Blekks A few days ago we got to meet a well established male model who goes by the name Blekks Makwara. He has featured on the ‘Econet's Smart Pandiri’ commercial and the ‘Golden Pilsener Go for Gold’ commercial. We got to ask him a few questions below.

18

MODEL GUIDE MAGAZINE | FEB 2019 | VOL 09

Age: 33 Modelling Agency :TopModelZW Career Span: 2011-Now Why did you choose a modelling career? Well I can say I didn't choose modelling as such, modelling chose me, it came out naturally. How do you balance modelling and acting? Since I am now specialising on commercial modelling and engaging seasonal film and series projects this has given me great flexibility to keep both arts moving since they have a great correlation. Your Achievements? So many I have in my gallery but the most to mention of and to take note was winning the ‘Dapperking Zw’ clothing line brand ambassadorship and being the first representative in two nations Zimbabwe and South Africa such an amazing and dotting achievement. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? I see myself establishing a strong formidable platform hub for upcoming, intimidate and experienced models to network and enhance their careers in a meaningful and progressive fashion. In your own opinion what do you think is the cause for few male models in Zimbabwe? Well in my view male models are plenteous but very few are recognised because of several factors considering our modelling industry here in Zim towards the male category and hence the majority of male models then prematurely exit the modelling industry before they reach and realise their full potential to seek for means of living as the pie is still small for the male counterparts. Male models go almost unnoticed in the fashion world. They pose beside the greats Cara Delevingnes and Adriana Limas of the industry, seen as more of an accessory than a name, and tend to fall off the radar when topics of eating disorders, sexual harassment and even ageism come up yet male models face these pressing issues. Lack of constant platforms to showcase their talent and skill.

MY SORROWFUL

Life

It all started long time ago..

When I think of the tragic moment in my life, I get lost in my thoughts. My parents passed away in a tragic accident that shocked the nation, and everything changed. As a girl of 15 years of age, it was really hard to convince myself to move on. After burial I was taken up by my relatives, and succumbed to awful treatment. I had to travel a long distance to go to school, almost 12km. It was really hard I had to walk on my own to and from school. What do they say, "if it was meant to be it will be", and I quote. I got raped by a person whom I don't even know. At home they said you shouldn't report, we don't want to be taken for questioning at the police station we have a reputation to uphold. I agreed to what they said, after 2 months I realized that I was pregnant. I lived a miserable life when the pregnancy was almost 8 months, due to work overload at home, I had a miscarriage and almost died. By the grace of God, life didn't stop there, I sneaked out of home and managed to write my ‘O’ level’s, and thanks to the Lord I passed. I was employed as an assistant clerk at that very school; got married to a teacher and life changed. So moral of the story never give up. Your problems might be little to what others are going through be yourself. Stay strong. CONTINUED ON THE NEXT ISSUE
