hat is the difference between a dog owner and a breed “fancier”? Speaking for myself, I can say that while I love dogs in general, there was just something that grabbed me and my family when, during our research into what breed of dog might be a good fit for us, we happened upon the photo and description of the basenji in the American Kennel Club Complete Dog Book. Looking back, it was a fateful fascination that drew us to researching this unique ancient breed, then on to meeting a local breeder, and finally to our first basenji. In the years since, we lived with and loved more basenjis; we joined our local and our national breed clubs; we made lots of friends who also loved basenjis; we competed with our basenjis, and became educated in issues affecting our breed and its future. If you are a basenji fancier, I think you probably also feel an affinity to the areas of Africa where basenjis exist today as they have for so long. I was fascinated when in the 1980s a party of basenji fanciers traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire) to bring back native dogs. But it wasn’t until a later expedition in 2006 that an idea took hold of me and others in the Basenji Club of Southeastern Wisconsin; an idea that led us beyond the dogs to their environment and the lives of the people with whom they live. I credit Jon Curby as the person who sparked our club’s continuing interest in the DRC, specifically northeast DRC where he has gone to find native basenjis

A Little Village School and helped us turn that interest into an actionable plan. Jon’s description of the lives of the people he interacted with on his trips painted a clear picture of the challenges of life there, for the people and the dogs. When I asked Jon if there was

any way to offer some financial help directly to the people, he suggested several local projects, but it was one – the local school – that was so compelling. We feel that educating children opens opportunities for them. So without further ado, we allocated money to the school from our THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 4

club profits. John Valk is the headmaster of the Congolese School at Epi, a small village in the DRC along the Uele River. John has also served as the local guide for several trips with basenji fanciers to find native basenjis in the 1980s and in the 2000s. BCOSW decided to donate several hundred dollars to the school in 2008, working through Jon Curby to make the money available to John Valk. Our first donation helped re-roof the school buildings. In 2009 we sent another donation and were able to help the school have desks built for the students. In 2010 we again sent a donation, happy that the children will benefit directly from our efforts. Many of these children are orphans whose parents fell victim to the LRA rebels from Uganda. Now that we are into 2011, we are making plans to do some targeted fund raising for the school. Soon there will be a Facebook page with lots of information about the school and the area, plus T shirts for sale to help support this worthy cause. Watch for more information coming soon!

am grateful for the stringent selections made by Veronica TudorWilliams and the other early basenji breeders, as they eliminated aspects they found to be unhealthy, unsightly, or lacking in type.

I’m

going to start by sticking my neck out here, because there is a discussion going on in the Basenji community, at least in the US, and it is my impression that this discussion is onesided. Only one side, made up of a relatively few people, is talking. There is an entire other view that is not being heard and considered. And without the other side being expressed, folks might think that the one side is the whole story, accepted dogma, for the entire body of breeders. I don’t think so. First, a bit of history. When Fanconi Syndrome began to ravage the breed, it popped up everywhere, with an unknown mode of inheritance and no way of identifying potential affecteds before they got sick, let alone the carriers. At its height, over 50% of the breed were either carriers or affecteds. It seemed that no line, no corner of the breed, with very, very few exceptions, was free of the disease. Some breeders began to talk about the small gene pool, the small number of original imports from Africa, and bemoaned the lack of diversity in the breed. From there, a plan was made to petition the AKC to open the stud book and to import new stock from Africa. Fast forward to today, where we now

IN DEFENSE OF BREEDING have more newly imported stock than we have original founders. While one could wonder at the effect of such a massive influx of new genetic material, that question is beyond the scope of my current musings. Instead, I would like to focus on the discourse that has flowed out of and around this unprecedented importation. This discourse has taken place against a backdrop in which “animal rights” groups have been advocating the spaying and neutering of all dogs, have urged adopting rescue dogs from shelters rather than buying purebred dogs from breeders, and have implied that the breeding of purebred dogs is an unnatural, even unethical activity. Amongst some Basenji fanciers, the discussion takes the form of arguments about the Basenji as a “natural” breed, one that should be preserved just as it came from the Congo, the South Sudan, or elsewhere in Africa. Some would have us believe that human-controlled breeding is the cause of genetic ill health, that only “natural selection,” which has reputedly happened in Africa for thousands of years, can preserve the breed. The Basenji standard, so carefully crafted by thoughtful debate by experienced breeders, is questioned, even disdained. Dogs who depart seriously from the standard should not be prevented from breeding, for this “narrows the gene pool.” Conscious, intentional breeder selection is seen as suspect; breeding tools such as line-breeding and inbreeding, in particular, are interpreted as short-sighted and, it is implied, unethical. Breeder actions, breeder decisions, are driving the basenji to an unhealthy, short-lived, future. I disagree, strongly. I speak in defense of both the art and the science of breeding. I see nothing wrong with the breed founders’ selection of what they felt to be the most attractive specimens, and their breeding with the goal of creating a THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 6

uniform, standard type. The selective breeding of animals, and for that matter, plants, has been a well-recognized human activity since the earliest attempts at animal domestication and farming. Line-breeding and yes, inbreeding, in the hands of experienced breeders, have long been respected tools. Check the Arabian horse registry, for example, or the Holstein cow registry. Those breeders, who have far more economic stake in their results than we, are very clear that increased genetic homogeneity is the way to increase more desirable and predictable results. I question the now popular fundamental presupposition that the Basenji is and should be a “natural” breed, or rather, I question the definition of “natural breed” that underlies the discussion. The Basenji is “natural” in that man did not purposely cross mastiffs with greyhounds as was done to create the Great Dane, for example, or the several breeds that went into the Doberman. The Basenji was, and still is, a distinct breed, “discovered” entire, in Africa, brought to England, America, and beyond, and then consciously bred. Another thread of the “natural” basenji” discourse constantly refers to the basenji in the field, doing what it was bred to do, hunt. I would like to point out that basenjis were never imported as hunting dogs, despite what we know to be their considerable talent. They were imported as unique and beautiful, exotic companions, new and unusual additions to the known dog world. Veronica TudorWilliams, the primary founder of the breed, was hoping the barkless feature would make the basenji an ideal apartment dog (well, we know that’s not exactly where that one ended up). She saw the basenji as a unique companion, a pet, and therefore the more grace and exotic beauty, the better. Her original selections of imported stock were based on these

features, not on hunting ability, and consisting only of the recent imports. It is the heritability estimate of any particular rightly so. She did many test breedings of not recorded that Kinga produced any trait. The World of Basenjis

Hi Everyone, Thank you for the kind words and thoughts. I’m doing fine. Nothing an 18 year old single malt scotch can’t handle. Mu’addib’s passing was a good enough reason to crack that dusty bottle open. I wrote this more for myself, but I thought it might make a good read. Enjoy...

In 1999 after I stopped working and bought my little house I got it into my head to get a dog. But which type? As a child I once saw a basenji, the barkless dog of Africa. It had made a lasting impression on me so I decided to look for one. Time went by and one day I answered an ad in the newspaper (one of few I’ve ever seen since). I spoke to a nice lady who seemed very curious as to who I was, where I lived, what kind of household and such. It seemed a bit like a job interview, but I didn’t mind. I must have “passed,” because she invited me to her home in Flagstaff, Arizona. So, I traveled from Southern Arizona to Northern Arizona to meet her, her husband, and her pack of basenjis. It was from there that I entered into the eccentric world of the basenji. Basenji breeders and owners are a fanatical bunch. Breeders are extreme about who gets a basenji and owners are overbearing and covet their ownership. Yes, me included. Chris and her husband, Jim, were great people and we hit it off wonderfully. Chris had been breeding for about 20 years or so. She had her own THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 10

distinct lineage and was looking for homes for her current litter of pups. I had come thinking that I would get the runt of the litter, as I was not looking for a show dog. I had explained that I would raise him for hunting and trekking the wilderness with me. This must have intrigued Chris, as she offered me the pick of the litter...an alpha male whom she felt needed a strong personality to raise him. Thus, I met SunDiata’s Mu’addib, the striking guy in these pictures. I called him “Mu”. He was 8 weeks old. Mu’addib is special in the basenji world as he is called a half-African. His father was the son of two African imports brought into the United States to strengthen the genetics of the American basenji. I considered it an honor to have him and still do to this day.

The elk, the wolves and food coma

Our first adventure together was to an elk camp full of men helping a friend hunt for a bull elk, a typical camp of hunters. Everyone was happy to be in the high country and excited for the opportunity to find an elk. Mu’addib was a hit among everyone. He was only nine months old,

THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 11

but you could already see his self-assured and pushy personality. He had no fear in him. Each morning we would set out in our vehicles and scatter across the countryside to look for elk. After a few days I finally got a call on the radio that my friend had killed his elk. We all converged on the kill site to help with the carcass and soon everyone was busy lending a hand with the butchering. At first Mu’addib stood off with his hair standing up, watching the scene in front of him, but soon his curious nature got to him and he came over to the carcass. He sniffed, then began to tear meat off of a hind leg. We all stood there in fascination over his actions. He would tear off a piece of meat, gnaw on it a few times, then swallow the chunk whole. He did this until he was bloated. He was in paradise. Soon we were back in camp and a few of the guys began caping the skull. Shortly, they were laughing and called me over. Mu’addib had decided that the skull was his and, while standing over it, fighting off the guys. I had to pull him off to let them finish the job. None of us could stop laughing at his antics. Evening rolled around and found everyone standing by the fire pit. Mu had retired to the warmth of my sleeping bag, when out of the darkness came the howl of a wolf. We all jumped for our flashlights and began scanning around the camp. Sure enough, the wolves had surrounded the camp and were intent on getting whatever they could steal. I went into a panic thinking Mu would come out and bolt for the wolves in the darkness. I rushed to the tent to leash him down before all hell broke loose. But there was Mu asleep with a food coma, totally oblivious to the world around him. He had his adventure and was happy to be in the warmth of the sleeping bag. He never knew that his brethren were just 50 yards away. And the wolves? They managed to steal the skull in the middle of the night.

Mu & Rowdy Ready to go!

Wilderness traffic jam When Mu was grown, he was bred to one of Chris’ females, producing two pups. I got one and called him Rowdy. Now I had two basenjis and everybody took to calling them “the boys:” the dominant Mu and the sweetheart Rowdy. We were again in the high country on a trek through some countryside that I wanted to explore for a future adventure. I was rounding a hill with the boys ahead of

seemed like an eternity we stood there until the turkeys decided that this was not a good situation and spooked. This spooked everyone else and then chaos ensued. Elk, turkeys and basenjis ran in all directions around me. All I could do was laugh at the hilarity of the situation, one of those rare experiences that one gets to enjoy in the wilderness. On another trip into the high desert mountains we were coming out after a long trek, looking forward to going home for a hot shower and a warm bed. We were following an ancient animal trail leading to my truck. It’s rough country so I had to be careful with my footing. I was concentrating on the trail when I looked up to find myself standing face to face with a bear. He was less than 10 feet from me and was also concentrating on the trail. Since I saw him first I didn’t quite know what to do as he was so close to me. I shouted,”Hey!” The bear looked up, stared at me and then let out a stream of poop in fear. By this time the boys had come out of the bushes to investigate what was going on. With one sight of the bear Mu took off after him. Rowdy is a lot more cautious than Mu and decided to stick with me. Rowdy and I watched as Mu chased this bear up the mountainside. The bear would occasionally look back to see this little red thing on his tail. He was scared stiff and would pick up speed with each look at Mu. Finally, Mu was winded and gave up the chase. He came back with a wild look on his face and grin as big as he could produce. He was in his element. He had been on the chase and had done what his kind was bred for. It was a sight to behold and a rewarding moment.

me when I noticed them standing stock still. They were looking at a large herd of elk not 50 yards from us. I heard a sound to my right and looked over to see a bunch of turkeys coming towards us. There we were, human, basenjis, elk, and turkeys all frozen, staring at each other. For what THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 12

Desert mountain stream beds are the formations of the apex of time and space. The boys and I are part of the cause and we definitely suffer the inevitable effect. The canyons were unknown to me, and I was pleased to be there. The local forest ranger had recommended an area that might be good for finding deep back country deer and I was on an exploratory trip to investigate for a possible hunt. It would take me days to get there, be there and get out, all without the assurance of water. Therefore, I was concerned as I left the trailhead and trekked into the first canyon. I was headed to a much larger canyon that would lead me deep into the wilderness, and as I had hoped, there was

water and it was clear and running. This had the makings for a good trip. Relieved, I headed up the larger canyon and trekked for many hours along the canyon bottom. Eventually, I was feeling fatigued, and sat down under a large oak. I took out the canteen, the boys’ cup and poured them some water to drink. They prefer filtered stream water to unfiltered...hey, they’re basenjis! Typically, they share the cup but Mu got an attitude and snapped at Rowdy. Rowdy snapped back and a minor fight ensued. After yelling, “Stop!” I got them to settle down, but Mu looked at me and with a huff he trotted off. I watched him go, knowing that he would get over it in a few minutes. I grabbed an energy bar, took a bite and started chewing. I stared blankly off into space for awhile until I heard Mu coming up from behind me. He casually sat down beside me and began chewing on the leg of a deer. I did a double take and noticed that it was a large leg. Excited, I asked him where he had found it, but all I got back was a nasty hate stare to let me know that I was on my own. I looked at Mu, then at Rowdy, then back to Mu and then back again at Rowdy. I asked Rowdy where the deer was, whereupon he trotted off in the direction that Mu had come from. I fell in line and followed him into the bushes. Sure enough, there were the remains of a deer in a small clearing not 10 yards from the trail. It was an older deer with an absolutely beautiful set of antlers, a wonderful trophy for my collection. I took the skull, cleaned it and strapped it to my backpack. We continued on up the canyon and into the heart of the wilderness. Recently, a friend was over for a beer and conversation. We were admiring my collection of deer antlers, drinking the beer and thinking about our hunting adventures and the memories that they produce. Admiring the largest set of antlers he asked me how I got those. I waxed eloquently about my trip into the unknown territory. I spoke of the deep canyons filled with cold running water and described climbing the steep hilltops to overlook the majestic mountains and valleys. Proudly, I recalled my serendipitous finding of the deer. After my lengthy diatribe my friend looked over at me and said, “David, It was Mu’addib who found the deer, therefore, it’s his trophy.” I stammered a feeble protest, but then relented. I smiled, and while taking

in the sight of the antlers I said, “ You’re right. It is Mu’s trophy.”

“Hey, it was a small tent!”

and finally in frustration my friend looked at me and said, “Hey, It’s your basenji. Do something!” Dominance was about the only thing Mu respected, therefore I had to exert some form dominance and gain control of the situation. I marched over to the tent and started to talk to Mu in my “tough guy voice” and forcibly bullied my way into the tent. I made sure that I didn’t look at him directly in the eyes thereby causing a challenge. Mu relented and let me into the tent. I then acted as if nothing was wrong and set about getting the boys tucked away to sleep. After I got them covered I waited a few minutes to let them calm down and called my friend in. He cautiously entered. As Mu was covered up he didn’t have to see my friend who was able to get in and into his sleeping bag. Now we had to make it through the night, which we did without any problems. But in the morning my friend found himself with Mu inches from his face. He sheepishly said, “Hi!” Mu lifted his head towards my friend, closed his eyes in affection and let him pat him on the head. Problem solved. Mu had accepted my friend as a member of the pack and let him have his place in the tent for the rest of the trip. Mu passed away just a few days short of his 11th birthday. I had to put him down after a year-long struggle from complications with a staph infection. It was hard, but I couldn’t let my companion suffer any longer. He was my first dog and I learned that the innate bond between a man and a dog is a beautiful thing. Mu will forever be in my memories and I shall cherish that fact.

Mu’addib always had a way of deciding the pecking order of the pack. Usually it was me, then Mu, then everybody else way down on the list of importance. On this trip we were to camp with a friend who would meet us in the wilderness a few days after we went in. We spent our days exploring and wasting time until my friend would show up. On the third day we hooked up and trekked to our camp deep into the wilderness. Even if you are in good physical shape there always comes a time when the body needs to rest. Mu reached this point upon the arrival to our camp. Stiff and sore he retired to the tent and the warmth of the sleeping bag. My friend and I busied ourselves with making a fire, fixing some food, getting water and doing the little things one does in camp. Soon nightfall fell upon us so we decided to retire to the tent and get some sleep. I went into the tent first and settled down into my sleeping bag. Typically Mu sleeps inside my wool jacket and Rowdy sleeps in a blanket. I was getting the boys settled in when my friend started to enter the tent. For whatever reason, Mu growled viciously at my friend and forced him back out of the tent. Embarrassed, I quickly got up and out of the tent to apologize and reassure him that it would be okay and that he would get to sleep in the tent. But how to do that was the problem. My friend had known Mu most of his life so it wasn’t as if we had a stranger among us. We were a bit confused and bewildered as we put more wood on the fire and contemplated the situation. Here were two grown men outdone by a 30-pound basenji. We felt fairly stupid, as every idea we had seemed too risky. It was a small tent and you had to enter it head first. Neither of us was willing to get our faces disfigured by a tired and grumpy basenji. For quite awhile we stared stupidly into the flames of the fire. Then it started to snow. We looked at each other and thought “Now what?” It was In memoriam: Sundiata’s Mu’addib. late; it was cold and snowing. WEIGHT PULL COMPETITION

A

few basenji owners have entered into the world of weight-pulling. This event sparked my interest while talking to someone at an all-breed kennel club meeting who trains Chihuahuas to pull weight. My eyes widened trying to envision a Chihuahua bearing its harnessed little body into a load while trying to pull an unthinkable amount of weight. As our conversation progressed, I remembered reading about a few basenji folks who told stories about the weight their basenjis could pull. The first thing the next morning I was shooting emails to these people asking for more information. Two basenji owners responded with their experiences in weight pulls. Two of the most notable organizations that offer weight pull competitions for all breeds of dogs are the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the International Weight Pull Association (IWPA). A visit to their websites will provide you a vast amount of information on how their events are governed. Dogs compete in weight divisions and begin their class with a maximum starting weight based on their weigh-in prior to the start of the competition. For example, a dog weighing in under 20 lbs. must pull 75 lbs; a dog under 30 lbs. is required to pull 125 lbs. However, the class winner for each weight division is determined by that last remaining dog in competition that can pull the heaviest load. The goal is to obtain the best percentage of weight pulled by a body weight or the most total weight pulled. The additional load increments are determined at a handlers’ meeting before the start of competition. Wendy Lake of Michigan has titled weight-pull basenjis and Laura Gilchrist in Maryland discovered that not only is weight-pulling a fun thing to do with her basenjis, the sport offers the side benefit of conditioning her dogs for other competitions, and to, well, just keep them busy.

Weight Pulling By Wendy Lake Weight pulling might be considered controversial by some. Possibly it is because many feel the sport is just for working or bully breeds. In reality, it’s an event that all dogs can do. When a dog is working hard that rush of accomplishment between handler and dog is wonderful, and others can see that bond between the team. The dog is under no physical contact with its handler. It will either pull or it won’t. It’s amazing to see the determination in the dogs’ eyes. I started with American Pit Bull Terriers and just enjoyed the relationship with my dogs. To see what their mind and body could do was amazing. I had wanted a basenji for 30 years and one day the dream came true. I acquired Little Foot as a pet but soon discovered he seemed to want to do more than just spend a life of leisure. One day I put a puppy harness on him and hooked him to the Radio Flyer wagon. Little Foot just walked off with it. Our adventure began. The first step of training has little to do with weight-pulling or conditioning. First step is to get your basenji to want to work for you. Every basenji has its own ideas about work. I was lucky with Little Foot. He wanted to be with me. If I waved deli turkey in front of him, Little Foot would do any work! Discover what works for your dog and then most of your job will be done. Basic obedience with the turkey got Little Foot in a working mode. When time came to train for weight-pulling, he was in tune with me. To begin training your basenji will need a

weight-pulling harness. Fit it on the dog and just play or do recalls to get him used to the feel of the harness. The bar may hit the dog’s legs or make noise. Each dog will react differently to the harness and the sounds. Remember through this entire experience, patience is a virtue. Only you will know when your dog has adjusted to this new sensation. Once the dog has adapted to the harness, fill a few plastic gallon jugs half-way with water or rocks. Hook them with a 3-4 foot tug and walk your dog around with these jugs bouncing and making noise. This will help the dog adjust to the noise a cart makes and to the feel of dragging something. After your dog has settled in to the feel of something dragging behind him, fill the jugs with water. A full gallon jug of water weighs 8 pounds. Allow your dog a few days of training before you move on to the next step. When you feel your dog has no issues with any of the training so far, the conditioning begins. Some people use chains for weight; others prefer drag sleds; and some, such as myself, use anything available for weight. I start with a wagon and add bricks. If the weather is cold, I use a bar weight and have my dog drag it around the living room. If my dog has finished the initial training, I use a 25 pound round weight in the house. Some trainers prefer to just do drag work; others choose cart work for training. I like to do both. The drag is great for conditioning and the cart offers real weight-pulling experience. Some bully trainers feel too much cart work may sour the dog. Each dog responds differently to the choices of conditioning. Once your basenji is excited to work for you, much of your work is done. My female puts her head down just like a bulldog and lays into the harness. My male, on the other hand, jumps around and starts the cart like a northern-bred dog before he puts his head down to pull in earnest. To each their own, but the end result is the same. As mentioned above, the dog will either pull or it won’t. No harm is done to the animal. Under competition, you cannot

touch or bait your dog, but you may call, sing, dance or just stand there if you wish. Several organizations offer weight-pulling trials. Each has some differences in their rules, but for the most part the rules are similar. Under UKC rules, a dog has 60 seconds to pull the cart 16 feet, and allows the handler to be right in front or beside the dog. The time starts when the dog moves or is called by its handler. IWPA rules state the handler must be behind the 16 foot finish line before the handler may call the dog. Dogs compete in weight classes. Each organization has titles and championships. Little Foot was the first UKC titled basenji and also the first Total Dog Awarded basenji. Nala was the first UKC basenji with 6 titles and Total Dog award finalist at UKC Premier. Mojo, (pictured at the end of the article) owned by Kelli Harmon, was the first UKC Grand Weight pulling titled basenji. It was an indescribable feeling to finish titles on my bred-by basenjis. The surface for weight pulling can be on snow, wheels and rails. Personally, I think a snow title is a huge accomplishment because not every dog has one -even some big hitters in the Weight Pulling world do not have a snow title. When Kelli Harmon’s basenjis and my dogs received their UWPS, it was an amazing feat because a dog has to earn 100 points on all three surfaces. Imagine the thrill of telling people an African basenji can pull a sled on snow in single-digit weather! I have had a great time competing in weight pulling with these unconventional working dogs. They are hard workers at heart no matter what event they perform. They just don’t want you to think it’s your idea. Nala was a bronze medalist in IWPA and earned an invitation to IWPA National Snow Competition. She weighed in one pound over the 20-lb class so she had to compete against Siberians and elkhounds. She did me proud by pulling 155 pounds and beating fellow dog competitors. 

Weight Pulling for Sport and Conditioning the Conformation and Performance Basenji By Laura Gilchrist Weight-pulling is a sport in which the dog pulls a cart, sled or sledge over a 16-foot tack with a certain amount of weight on it. Weight-pulling requires a dog with some basic obedience skills and very little equipment to get started to see if you like it. Having a weight-pull dog in the house has lots of advantages. I have used my weight-pulling dogs to pull the recycling containers; pull baskets of snow from one area of the yard to another; pull dirt for the gardens. The ideas are endless. Weight-pulling is also a great way to get your dogs in condition for the show ring or performance events and it also builds stamina. We all know how our little guys love to pull so why not harness that energy into a new sport. Now that I have your interest, let’s look at the equipment you will need:

• *8 to 10-foot pulling line (clothesline with two snaps on it works well) • *16-foot track of open space either indoor or outside. • *2 to 5 pounds of weights (bags filled with sand work well) The basic obedience for your basenji: • * Stand stay • * Heel in motion • * Come on command • * Down and Down Stay If you can train these with hand signals, all the better because a Weight Pull event can get quite noisy. To get the dog used to the pulling harness, start by putting on the pulling harness and letting the dog walk while you lead him/her around. The bar in the back will bump along the ground and help the dog get used to noise behind it. If it is frightening your basenji too much, clip the bar to the harness until the dog gets used to the sensation of the harness. When introducing the dog to the harness with the sledge attached to the pulling line, it is very important not to have the sledge too close to the dog because you do not want to scare the dog. Start by making sure you have a

smooth surface to start the dog. I use a carpeted hallway or the living room floor. If you have a concrete area, buy some rubber matting so the dog can get a foothold. A smooth track in the backyard or at the park also works. Start out with the sledge about 6 to 8 feet away from the dog. Hold the dog’s head to prepare him for the pull. Lower his head and give the command Stand/Stay. This gets the dog into position to pull by leaning into the harness. Next, walk to the front of the dog a few feet away and call the dog toward you using treats or a slight tug on the leash. Start with the dog pulling the sledge a very small distance and give lots of praise and goodies. At the end of each pull when you catch your dog you want to catch him on both sides of the head to stop so he stops straight. As your dog becomes comfortable with pulling, increase the weight and the distance until he/she is pulling the whole 16 feet. Also, at that point if you are using weight pull for just conditioning, your basenji should be able to walk beside you at a Heel while he is pulling the sledge. When it is time for your dog to take a break, put the dog in a Down Stay. In competition you will always be in front of your dog calling it forward. You can also change the surfaces used for pulling -- packed snow in the winter, packed sand in the summer or a smooth dirt path. All of these will keep the training interesting for both you and your dog. 

My Journey Into The World Of Basenjis By Gale Whitehurst UnderCover Basenjis unny as it seems now, I did have a life before basenjis!! Can’t imagine it, but I did. I was an only child of adoring parents who adopted a child “late in life”. I was their pride and joy – my mother’s until the day she died and my father’s until I adopted a baby girl and she moved me over quite a bit in his eyes. I loved animals and, with my mother’s encouragement and my father’s money, raised orphaned deer, squirrels, horses, raccoons, crows, and any other variety of living thing I found or was given. To say we sometimes lived in a zoo was an understatement. We even had the mandatory monkey! Fortunately we also had a LARGE house and a housekeeper who loved animals. I led a rather storybook life and all went splendidly for everyone until I left to go to college, and my mother’s world fell apart. She reinvented the empty nest syndrome! Well in 1986, I found myself reliving my mother’s world, as in 1975, I had adopted a beautiful baby girl named Ashley. Well, eleven years later, my whole world revolved around her, and I knew from my mother’s experience that in a few years when she went to college, my world, as I knew it, would be gone forever. I also knew, from experience, that I would drive Ashley crazy trying to micromanage her life in those wonderful teenage years that are so enjoyable to teenagers and parents alike. (Ha Ha!) To save us both, I thought I needed to get a hobby that I could get involved in while Ashley was in high school and continue after she left the nest. I had come into a little money, so I

F

thought why not combine my need for a hobby with my love of dogs and buy a show dog? Not that I had ever been to a dog show or even seen one on television, but I thought that just might be fun. But what kind of dog would I like? I, as every other kid in the 40’s and 50’s, had had 2 cocker spaniels but I knew I didn’t want all that hair and those smelly ears. I had also had a boxer that I rescued from a neighbor when her surgeon husband got tipsy, kicked at the dog, fell and broke his hip. Mother and I thought it served him right, and we convinced my dad that we just had to have Maggie. While I loved Maggie, she was too big – good thing too as I was ignorant of the fact that there were 50 to 100 boxers at every dog show. I had also rescued 2 weimaraners after I finished college, but they were too big as well. My father rescued a Shih Tzu and decided I needed him, but one was too many and more than enough to last forever. So while I loved each of those dogs(except maybe the Shih Tzu) none were THE dog for me and my prospective show career. Years earlier, I had been given an AKC book with all the dog breeds and their standards, so I sat down to research. I decided I wanted a fairly small, wash and wear dog that did not shed a lot. I wanted a dog that had an interesting history and was unique. Of course, I also wanted one that was beautiful to look at and an easy keeper and whelper. My experience with basenjis at this point was that I had seen and been fascinated with “Goodbye My Lady”. I had never seen a live one nor did I have any idea of their personality but I thought they sounded really interesting and looked really neat in that AKC book. (I am now immediately suspicious of anyone who THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 22

tells me that, although they have never seen or known anyone with a basenji, they have read ALL about them!!!!!) So equipped with my now enormous knowledge of basenjis, I started looking for one. I found that Jean and Jimmie Phillips lived in Albany, GA so I called and asked about buying a puppy. Since I was calling in the late summer, Jean immediately knew I knew nothing about basenjis, but she was very polite and told me that they did not have any puppies nor would anyone else as it was the wrong time for basenji puppies. She did tell me to call back in the fall, and they would be glad to discuss my getting a puppy. However, I WANTED ONE NOW!!!! I discovered the Dog World magazine and found someone in Ohio who had a litter of August puppies. She had reds and blacks, and she would be glad to sell me a bitch puppy. I informed her that I intended to show her, and I wanted a red and white girl. She assured me that she had exactly what I was looking for. I then immediately thought: “See that Phillips woman didn’t know what she was talking about!!” So on Thanksgiving weekend in 1986, Obinoxious came into and changed my life forever. Lessons Learned: • Never believe just what you read in books • Always at least listen to people who actually KNOW what they are talking about • Find a mentor and listen to what they have to say. 

THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 23

THE BASENJI By Sally Wuornos Several different genes contribute to the colors of basenjis. First, the concept of genetic inheritance should be made clear. Every offspring inherits one color gene from each parent. Even though red, tri, recessive black and saddle genes all reside on the “A” series (the series that controls the distribution of dark color in the overall coat of the dog) each offspring will only inherit two of these choices -- one from each parent. Although other color genes are found on the ”A” series, only the genes metioned above are found in basenjis and will be covered in this discussion. At each “series” there is a hierarchy to what gene will dominate the ones below it. When a gene is dominate to another, it will appear as the actual color that is seen. On the “A” series, in basenjis, red is the top color on the hierarchy. So the red basenji may have, as the other gene, red, tri, saddle or recessive black. One can’t determine just by looking at a basenji if it is pure-for-red. For example, if the dog has a black triangle of hairs in it’s tail , it is likely to carry the gene to produce one of the other colors. However, lack of black hairin the tail doesn’t automatically mean that a dog isn’t a carrier of a color other than red. I, personally, have had dogs with no triangle of black hairs in their tail that produced tris. Tri is next in dominance; recessive black is at the bottom; therefore this color doesn’t dominate any other color gene. Both the saddle and recessive black are rare in basenjis. A saddle-colored basenji may carry, as its other gene, saddle, tri or recessive black. Yet this can’t be determined just by looking at the dog. A tri-colored basenji has either two tri genes or one tri and one recessive black gene. A recessive black basenji has inherited two

recessive black genes. This same concept can be applied to brindles and dominate blacks, which will be covered later. The trick is to know what two genes your basenji may haves on its “A” series. The following are the only two ways to know what a red basenji carries on its other gene. If a red basenji has a tri parent, it has to have a tri gene, (or a gene dominated by tri). If a dog is red and has produced a tri offspring, it has to carry tri (or a gene that’s dominated by tri). If your red basenji has produced a recessive black, then it carries recessive black as its other gene on the “A” series. If it’s produced a saddle, then it has the saddle gene as its other gene. The fact that the basenji has two red parents doesn’t eliminate it from having a tri gene (or one below the tri gene on that hierarchy). The easiest way to determine the color inheritance is to create a table. Across the top, place the genes of the one parent, if you know them, one gene in each column. Down the left hand column place the genes from the other parent, if known, one in each row. This is based on the history of that parent, what it has produced, or the color of its parents. The four cells give the possible offspring combinations; they will have two colors in them. If you place the color at the top first, then the color from the left hand column in each cell you will end up with two colors in each cell. Those two represent the possible colors that any one pup can inherit. It is important to understand that these ratios of red and tri will hold true in the long run -- 30+ puppies. Any single litter can have different results. These are the probability tables. Each of the four cells with two colors listed account for ¼ (or 25%) of the puppies produced from those colors of parents. The tables shown below all are for red and tris, the tris are assumed to be pure for tri. THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 24

If a basenji carries either saddle or recessive black, you will get a different mix. Substitute recessive black or saddle to these tables instead of tri. More tables would have to be completed for more possible combinations, keeping in mind the color hierarchy to know the actual TABLE #1 Mating of pure-for-red bred to tri color (all pups are red, all carry tri) Red

color of the puppies. Now let’s add the dominant black and brindle colors to the basenji. The current thinking is that the dominant black and brindle reside on the ”K” series, but brindle needs ”E” or ”Em” to be expressed. There are web sites that extensively discuss this fact. If you have either brindle or dominant black this adds an entirely separate set of genes to the mix, and is more complicated to analyze. Remember that each series has two genes that produce the color for that series.

On the black and brindle series there’s the “none of these,” “brindle,” and “dominant black” in basenjis. Any dog that is red, tri, saddle or recessive black has two of the “none of these” on the black/brindle series. The easiest method to describe a dominant black or brindle is to imagine you have a black magic marker. If you color over the entire colored portion of a basenji, no matter the color, with black, that’s your dominant black. You can’t tell by looking at that dog what color(s) it has on the “A” series; it looks black. It could be a red, tri, or brindle, or saddle or recessive black. You just don’t know because you colored it all over with a black marker. The colors on that animal’s “A” series will only be known once it has produced puppies, or if you know its “A” series via the parents. As you can see, this gets more complicated. You will always know if a dog has a dominant black gene because that’s the only color they can express. It only takes one gene from a dominant black to produce a black dog. It

THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 25

can have “none of these” or brindle as its other gene on this series. If a dog has two dominate black genes it will only produce blacks. The basenji with two dominate black genes would have to have two dominant black parents. In regard to the brindle, use that same black magic marker and draw lines all over the dog. If you draw on the black part of a tri or the black part of a saddle or black part of a recessive black, notice the effect of the black marker can’t be seen. This doesn’t mean the black stripes are not there, they just can’t be seen against the black portion of the coat. A red dog will have brindle stripes on all red parts and tris, saddles, and recessive blacks would only have visible stripes on the non-black areas of their coats. The amount of stripes varies greatly in basenjis. It’s difficult to predict the amount or width of striping that will be expressed in a brindle, since that is probably determined by some type of modifier gene. 

Dog Shows Part 1: By Thomas Meade II

What Does It Cost to Participate in the Sport... Especially for Juniors!

W

hat does it cost to show a dog in our sport? Most owners and handlers in the sport are concerned with considerable expense to exhibiting dogs. The professional handlers’ overhead expenses are often thousands of dollars per weekend. Vehicle maintenance on these large custom canine carriers is very expensive yet important for the safety, security, health, and well-being of client dogs, not to mention the staff’s own well-being and comfort while on the road. Some shows, such as the Detroit Kennel Club show, for example, offer discounted entry fees for the Bred-ByExhibitor and Puppy Classes, yet the cost is still expensive for any dog fancier, especially those who support their sport on an annual basis. In addition to the dog/per day/per entry fee, add in the cost for lodging and travel. Junior Showmanship was $25.00 per entry for this show! Entries at shows are down for many reasons, most especially the economy. If the future of the sport is the junior handlers, these children will inherit the responsibilities of the sport -breeding, showmanship, health advances and research for our purebred dogs. Is it possible clubs could offer free junior showmanship classes, or at least at a discounted rate? Is it really appropriate to charge $25.00 for a single junior entry? On-going professional development costs time and money. These experts are on the road most of the year, promoting our sport locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally. These folks could be called the ‘professional athletes’ of our sport! We non-pros benefit from the exposure these seasoned handlers bring to the sport of dogs. APDW Honors Damara Bolté With Stonehenge Award Damara began her career in dogs in the early 1950s as a kennel manager for Bettina Belmot Ward’s Pioneer Kennel of Basenjis in Middleburg, Virginia. Mrs. Ward was the granddaughter of AKC president August Belmont and was influential in the horse world as well as the dog world. Damara gained a firm foundation in conformation, surrounded by the finest horseflesh and “basenjifur” obtainable at the time. As Damara relayed in a Show Sight interview, “I had the opportunity to indulge my early interest in purebred dogs and shows when I managed one for the first basenji Kennels in 1955. Soon after, I became a licensed professional handler and pursued that course concurrent with my career. I have handled a fair number of breeds, but always basenjis. I have continued to breed basenjis on a very modest scale and earlier bred Mastiffs with my mother. I have shown 9 basenjis to BIS; my kennel name is Reveille.” Her accomplishments and interests are many and varied, encompassing sculpting, professional handling, and writing (Damara wrote the basenji column for The AKC Gazette for 30 years.) She showed

and co-bred Border Terriers with the late Marion DuPont Scott who hung her hat at Montpellier, James Madison’s home in Virginia. In 1988, Damara went on safari with the Basenji Club of America African Stock Project. The object was to find barkless dogs to enrich the thin basenji gene pool. Katherine Hepburn’s adventures on The African Queen pale beside Damara’s forays into the jungle. The dogs she brought back enriched the basenji gene pool and introduced the dog world to the beauty of the brindle basenji. Damara wrote about her adventures in the Gazette and in literature for her national club. This dedicated fancier exemplifies the highest standards that we in APDW aspire to and is a most appropriate choice for The Stonehenge Award. Alliance of Purebred Dog Writers (APDW) was founded at Bucks County Kennel Club Show on May 7, 2005 by a group of communicators who saw the need for a writers’ organization that focused on purebred dogs. APDW seeks to set the standard for excellence in communicating about purebred dogs, the sport, and issues of interest to the fancy and the general public. in the ring as we either walk to the photographer or return to our set-up. Wins are excellent, but tough reflection and evaluation takes place during ‘the walk of defeat’. Losing always offers an opportunity for reflection, evaluation, and to get in touch with the reality of the sport. We have to decide if we want to utilize this opportunity. Limited Junior Showmanship classes are fun, and give us another chance to show our dogs. Juniors usually work towards earning wins to participate in Limited Showmanship (in the Open Classes), and to experience handling at the introductory level in the Novice Classes. Often clubs offer post-secondary scholarship money and/or prizes such as certificates, specially embroidered tote bags and towels that any junior would love to add to their collection of dog show

trophies. For example, the Kentuckiana Limited Junior Showmanship jackets are well known as “junior status symbols” I have two -- one from 2006 and another in 2007 and wore them year round until I grew out of them. Getting measured for a jacket before ‘finals’ (which take place immediately before Best-in-Show) each year is a rite-of-passage and a highlight of a prestigious win in a Limited Junior Showmanship class. In closing, congratulations to Meisterhaus Basenjis Tad Brooks and Joseph Hurt and Tim Huff, Victory, on their Best of Breed win at the 125th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and to all of the competitors in this prestigious event. Best Wishes and continued success to our new “forward-moving with impressive reach and drive...GCH CH Meisterhaus Dazzle ‘N Daze.” 

From the APDW Press Release, February 9, 2011

On February 13, 2011 Alliance of Purebred Dog Writers (APDW), founded in 2005, honored Damara Bolté with The Stonehenge Award. This award is presented each year to those who have contributed significantly to the sport of purebred dogs. Damara joins past Stonehenge recipients Anne Rogers Clark, Edd Bivin, Bo Bengtson, and Patti Strand. Along with presenting the Stonehenge pendant APDW will make a donation to Take the Lead in Damara’s name. The Stonehenge presentation was the highlight of the annual APDW Arthur Awards Luncheon held at Sardi’s, in New York City. (Continued from page 34)

to exhibit a dog and apply critique in the show ring. Every teacher has a unique teaching style as does every judge have a preference for ring procedures and protocol. An excellent example is Judge Houston Clark. He requires juniors to read an informational sheet that he provides prior to entering his ring. This sheet explains his expectations and key points he is looking for in the ring. Judge Clark also shares feedback individually and collectively with his juniors. Additional advice may come from on-lookers and fellow junior handlers, but the bottom line for the chance for a potential win is the judge! In junior showmanship, skills and feedback are applied on many levels --- not all learning and growth in the sport takes place in the judging ring. We juniors do reflect on what happens

2010 Basenji Club of America National Specialty - Comments from the Judge By Judge Mr. Kent Delaney It was an honor to judge the breed at your National Specialty Show. A special Thank You to Pat Bird and her committee for all their hard work which made for a spectacular National. I had a great time. From the start of judging, I knew every class would be very competitive. I could not deny the winner of the Open brindle class. He put it all together, mind and body. His balance flowed through into his extremely sound and clean movement. The strength of the bitch entry became apparent with the puppy bitch classes. So many of lovely type, size and soundness. Their beauty and style will make so many champions. I could not deny the Bred-By-Exhibitor winner. Her movement was balanced with perfect reach and drive. Her head was exquisite with loads of detail. Her topline was rock hard and never let down. The specials class made an awesome sight. So many beautiful animals, after several cuts all those left at the end were worthy of the honors. My Best of Breed could not be denied. He had strength, balance, movement and such stature...to say that he was “On” is an understatement. He was pushed to the limit by two lovely bitches. The winner of Best of Opposite Sex, too, had purpose in movement. Her balance moving and standing was excellent. The winners of the Selects and Awards of Merit were all worthy of winning top honors. Thanks to all the exhibitors for such an exciting entry and for the sporting and courteous manner in which my decisions were accepted. The best, Kent Delaney THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 36

Comparison of Basenji Standards Around the World Canada, FCI Countries, United Kingdom & USA While all these standards describe the basenji you will find the wording different in some cases. People all learn differently and at least one description should bring home exactly how the basenji should look The Basenji Club of America, Inc. printed a pamphlet, A Review of the BASENJI STANDARD, in January 1991 depicting the latest official standard adopted in 1990. After each section of the standard there are comments that further describe and clarify what that part means. Some parts of those comments are added here to the standard of the USA. In Canada, the UK and the USA the basenji is classified as a hound for show purposes (sighthound for further division) and shown in the Hound Group. In the UK the Kennel Club controls the breed standards rather than allowing the breed clubs to do it. In the USA, breed clubs are responsible for their own standards and only have to pass AKC approval.

The Basenji is a small, lightly built, short-backed dog, giving the impression of being high on the leg compared to its length. The wrinkled head must be proudly carried, and the whole demeanor should be one of poise and alertness. The Basenji should not bark, but is not mute. The wrinkled forehead and the swift, tireless running gait (resembling a race horse trotting full out) are typical of the breed.

Lightly built, finely boned aristocratic-looking animal, high on leg compared with its length, always poised, alert and intelligent. Wrinkled head, with pricked ears, proudly carried on a well arched neck. Deep brisket runs up into a definite waist, tail tightly curled presenting a picture of a well balanced dog of gazelle-like grace.

GENERAL APPEARANCE The Basenji is a small, short haired hunting dog from Africa. It is short backed and lightly built, appearing high on the leg compared to its length. The wrinkled head is proudly carried on a well arched neck and the tail is set high and curled. Elegant and graceful, the whole demeanor is one of poise and inquiring alertness. The balanced structure and the smooth musculature enables it to move with ease and agility. The basenji hunts by both sight and scent.

COMMENTS – The dog is lightly built but not be ‘weedy - - A dog with ample length of upper arm can have a good depth of brisket and still appear high on the leg. The brisket should come to the elbow and the upper arm should be about the same length as the shoulder blade.

CHARACTERISTICS The basenji should not bark but is not mute. The wrinkled forehead, tightly curled tail and swift effortless gait (resembling a race horse trotting full out) are typical of the basenji.

Does not have a separate Characteristics section. Instead it combines this language, same as the US, within the General Appearance section.

Barkless but not mute, its own special noise a mixture of a chortle and a yodel. Remarkable for its cleanliness in every way

Barkless but not mute, its own special noise a mixture of a chortle and a yodel. Remarkable for its cleanliness in every way

COMMENTS – USA- on gait can not be over emphasized: “It appears effortless and can be maintained for great distances. Effortless grace is a better indication of good movement than high speed in the trotting basenji.”

Ideal height: dogs 43 cm (17in) at withers, bitches 40 cm (16 in) at withers. Ideal weight: dogs 11 kg (24 lbs.), bitches 9 ½ kg (21 lbs.)

COMMENTS – USA-The Basenji’s proportions should be truly square within the height from the top of the shoulder to the ground being equal to the distance from the front of the chest to the end of the hindquarters. Long-bodied or short legged dogs are not desirable, nor are dogs that appear high behind.

HEAD The head is proudly carried. Eyes - dark hazel to dark brown, almond shaped, obliquely set and farseeing, rims dark. Ears - small, erect, and slightly hooded, of fine texture and set well forward on the top of the head. The skull is flat, well chiseled and of medium width, tapering toward the eyes. The foreface tapers from eye to muzzle with a perceptible stop. Muzzle shorter than the skull, neither coarse nor snippy, but with rounded cushions. Wrinkles appear upon the forehead when the ears are erect, and are fine and profuse. Side wrinkles are desirable, but should never be exaggerated into dewlap. Wrinkles are most noticeable in puppies, and because of lack shadowing, less noticeable in blacks, tricolors and brindles. Nose - black greatly desired. Teeth - evenly aligned with a scissors bite.

Head - The skull is flat, well chiseled and of medium width, tapering towards the eyes. The foreface should taper from eye to muzzle and should be shorter than the skull. The muzzle neither coarse nor snipey but with rounded cushions. Wrinkles should appear upon the forehead, and be fine and profuse. Side wrinkles are desirable, but should never be exaggerated into dewlap. Black nose greatly desired. A pinkish tinge should not penalize an otherwise first-class specimen, but it should be discouraged in breeding. Teeth must be level with scissors bite. Eyes dark hazel, almond shaped, obliquely set and far seeing. Ears small, pointed and erect of fine texture, set well forward on top of head.

Head and Skull - Flat, wellchiseled and medium width, tapering towards nose, with slight stop. Distance from top of head to stop slightly more than from stop to tip of nose. Side lines of skull taper gradually towards mouth, giving a clean-cheeked appearance. Fine and profuse wrinkles appearing on forehead when ears pricked, side wrinkles desirable but not exaggerated into dewlap. Wrinkles more noticeable in puppies, but because of lack of shadowing, not as noticeable in tricolours; black nose desirable. Eyes - Dark, almond-shaped, obliquely set, far-seeing and rather inscrutable in expression. Ears - Small, pointed, erect and slightly hooded, of fine texture, set well forward on top of head, tip of ear nearer centre of skull than outside base. Mouth - Jaws strong, with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

HEAD : Fine and profuse wrinkles appearing on forehead when ears pricked; side wrinkles desirable but not exaggerated into dewlap; wrinkles more noticeable in puppies, but because of lack of shadowing, not as noticeable in tricolours. CRANIAL REGION : Skull: Flat, well-chiselled and medium width, tapering towards the nose. Side lines of skull taper gradually towards mouth, giving a clean-cheeked appearance. IMPORTANT PROPORTION : Distance from top of head to stop slightly more than from stop to tip of nose. Stop: Slight Facial Region - Nose : Black nose desirable. Jaws/Teeth : Jaws strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. the upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square in the jaws. Eyes : Dark, almond-shaped; obliquely set, far-seeing and rather inscrutable in expression. Ears : Small, pointed, erect and slightly hooded, of fine texture, set well forward on top of head, tip of ear nearer centre of skull than outside base.

COMMENTS: Nose: All four standards call for a black nose. CKC adds – A pinkish tinge should not be penalized on an otherwise first-class specimen, but should be discouraged in breeding. Eyes - The far-seeing expression of the eye is dependent on position, shape and angle. The color of the iris is dark and the eyes should be small without being piercing or button-like. Light eyes or round eyes are undesirable. Ears: To elaborate further - The tip of the ear should be nearer the center of the skull than the outside base. In addition, the ears are slightly hooded in that the tips are directed more forward than the base. The orifice is to the front, cupped rather than opened flat. It is the high set of the ears and the pricking forward when alerted that produce the fine wrinkle and quizzical expression so typical of the Basenji. Large and/or low set ears are not desirable. Tail - High set, with up into a definite waist. posterior curve of buttock extending Tail: See General Appearance beyond root of tail giving a reachy appearance to hindquarters. Curls tightly over spine and lies closely to thigh with a single or double curl. COMMENTS: Neck: The neck of good length provides length to the muscles that extend from the head to the upper arms. It also ensures maximum range of shoulder blade action, and promotes free forward movement of the forelimbs. The length of neck is increased by a blending into laid back shoulders. A good length of neck, well-crested, allows the dog more mobility and balance as well as enhancing the aristocratic appearance. The throat is clean without loose skin and the base of the neck is slightly full where it blends into the body. Note that the white collar can give the impression of a longer neck. Ewe necks and necks that meet the withers abruptly without a smooth transition are undesirable. Body: Proper chest development contributes to proper movement. The Basenji should measure square. Dogs with long backs or long bodies and short legs, all of which create a long rectangular proportion, are not typical of the breed. Tail: The curl itself is a superficial virtue, with a double curl being the improvement over the original African imports. More important than the degree of curl is the position where the root joins the body. The tail should sit high in its relationship to the structure of the croup, and then as a separate feature, the tail should curl tightly to one side of the rump or the other. Neck - Of good length, well crested and slightly full at base of throat. It should be well set into shoulders. Body - The body should be short and the back level. The chest should be deep and of medium width. The ribs well sprung, with plenty of heart room, deep brisket, short-coupled, and ending in a definite waist. Tail - Should be set on top and curled tightly over to either side.

COMMENTS: In the US A standard a shoulder angle of about 30 degrees from the vertical can be considerately moderately laid back. The upper arm should be long, and about the same length as the shoulder blade, and the elbow should be set approximately under the tip of the shoulder blade. Pasterns should not be weak and sloping, nor rigidly upright nor knuckled over.

HINDQUARTERS Medium width, strong, and muscular, hocks well let down and turned neither in nor out, with the long second thighs and moderately bent stifles. Feet: Same as in “Forequarters.”

Should be strong and muscular, with hocks well let down, turned neither in nor out, with long second thighs. Feet: small, narrow, and compact, with well-arched toes.

Strong and muscular. Stifle : Moderately bent. Second thigh : Long. Hock : Well let down, turned neither in nor out. Feet : Small, narrow and compact, with deep pads, well arched toes and short nails.

COMMENTS: US Standard emphasizes the correct Basenji hindquarters is the requirement for moderate angulation. Over-angulated hindquarters overpower the front, resulting in crabbing, pounding or other examples of movement imbalance. Maximum propulsion without increasing angulation is achieved by ensuring that the rear portion of the pelvis is long to provide ample attachment for muscles that extend downward and draw the hind leg rearward. This length creates the appearance of a shelf behind the high tail set. The hocks should be well let down for endurance. Beware of long hocks and short second thighs. Viewed from behind, the column of bones from hip to pad should be straight. The hocks should neither turn out nor in. Moving, the hind legs track directly behind those of the front, converging toward the center of gravity as speed increases. Single tracking is not uncommon at high speed. Feet: An oval, rather than a cat foot, is required. Flat or splayed feet should be heavily penalized. The basenji is a hound and thin, open feet are subject to recurrent lameness. The faster the trot, the greater the convergence.

Legs carried straight forward with a Legs carried straight forward with a swift, long, tireless, swinging stride. swift, long, tireless, swinging stride.

COMMENTS – There should be no bounce to the shoulders, and the topline should remain level. Dogs should not appear to trot down hill. In the basenji, the reach should be efficient with good shoulder rotation and elbow extension. Excessive action, or high or hackney action is inefficient and fatiguing. The rear leg should reach well under the body while the follow through of the driving leg should extend about twice this distance behind. Exaggerated kick, which offers no additional propulsion, is only cosmetic and should be avoided. In basenji gait, overall balance and timing are of primary importance.

COMMENTS: The skin texture is very important. It should be thin and elastic, yet strong. Coarse skin cannot produce the fine profuse wrinkles characteristic of the breed, while skin lacking in strength tears easily while the dog is working in heavy cover. The texture of the skin should be tested gently by simply stroking. The hair itself is silky but often somewhat stiff. This hard surface collects little dirt.

An intelligent, independent, but affectionate and alert breed. Can be aloof with strangers.

COMMENTS – For uncounted thousands of years the basenji survived as a hunting dog. Great importance must have been given to intelligence and adaptability for the dog often worked out of sight of hunters. At times the basenji can still be quite independent and aloof. It is alert and careful with strangers, open and calm with friends, loving and solicitous with children. When meeting strangers, Basenjis prefer to make the first overtures and should not be approached from behind. Although not high strung, the Bbsenji is an alert, active, curious dog. Judges should not expect it to stand motionless for long periods of time.

FAULTS None listed

Hello all, The Basenji Club of Southeastern Wisconsin, Inc. has a busy year ahead of us. The main focus of course is the 2011 Basenji Club of America, Inc. national specialty – the premier event for basenji lovers worldwide. We are working diligently to make this the best one ever. You are always only a click away from news about this event:

So many things are in our favor for this year’s national. We have the best of both worlds in terms of volunteers: experienced “old hands” plus enthusiastic and talented newer members with so many great ideas! We have the benefit of having hosted the 2004 national at this same venue, the Manitowoc County Expo and Ice Center, in lovely Manitowoc, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. Best of all, our host hotel and indeed the entire city of Manitowoc eagerly want us back again. We are coordinating supported entries – both BCOSW and BCOA – for the Manitowoc Kennel Club (MKC) all breed conformation shows preceding our national, and taking advantage of MKC’s all breed agility trials as well for our BCOA agility classes. Other than agility, everything will be on the Expo grounds including our ASFA lure coursing trial, AKC Junior Courser tests 1 and 2, and our LGRA race meet. Find out all the details and latest news on the 2011 BCOA National Specialty website – bookmark the site and check back often:

BREEDER INTERVIEW Breeders Mia LĂśwbeer & Monica Massih

Yulara Basenjis What is your kennel prefix? - Yulara How long have you been breeding basenjis? -- We had our first litter in 1966, but our current breeding started in 1982. Will you explain the breed judging in your country, how it works, what you like about it and what you don’t like about it, if anything?

Mia with Avongara Angali

The breed is judged under the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) rules. The classes are Junior 9-18 months, Intermediate 15-24 months, Open 15 months and older, Champion 15 months and older, and Veteran class 8 years and older. First, the dogs get an individual judging and a written critique and you get an Excellent, Very Good, Good, Sufficient or Disqualified. All dogs with Excellent go into the competition class and 4 dogs are placed. The judge also has to decide after the placing which dogs will get a CQ (Champion Certificate quality); the judge may give as many as he/she wishes. For best dog/bitch all CQ come in the ring and the judge places the top four. They may come from the same class if the judge thinks those dogs are the best four in their sex. Then Best Dog meets Best Bitch for Best of Breed. A dog can not win the Swedish champion title before the age of two years. I like this system with the written critique because you can go back and read the critiques of a certain dog when you are looking for a stud, for example. You also get a hint as to why the judge did as he/she did. I also like that dogs can be placed in the Best Dog/Bitch class as 2nd even if it was 2nd or 3rd in its class. I feel that with a system where only the winners are considered for placings this results in some good dogs that are lost along the way.

How does breeding differ in your country, as opposed to the United States? We are more under the Kennel Club rules and breed club rules than you are. The Basenji Club in Sweden had to set up breeding strategies -- putting up goals and describing how to reach them. That includes health, conformation, diversity and temperament. The Club works closely with its breeders to arrive at an agreement for how we should work together the next five years. Revision takes place every fifth year. Monica gaiting Yulara Nono Morinda

What dogs that you bred do you feel have made the biggest impact on your breeding program and why? Ch Yulara Anemone and she was born in our second litter of current breeding. She was correct in so many ways and had the most beautiful and correct movement. She was awarded best gaiting basenji at three different basenji specialties under breed specialists. She won a BIS all breeds. She was sold and due to certain circumstances she had only one litter. However, it was a litter of three champions including the mother of my famous Multi Ch SBIS Maya-Mayi. Anemone passed along her absolute gorgeous temperament and gait to her pups. We are now five generations down the line with very limited breeding and in the litter just born we have one more or less marked like her. So, we will see if he will lives up to his ancestor! THE MODERN BASENJI - Page - 44

Will you highlight some of your history in the breed… champions bred, specialty winners etc.? Our biggest achievement is that we have bred versatile basenjis. We have bred 24 champions, and titles are hard to get here as described above. We have bred one out of two basenjis in Sweden winning a first prize in obedience (obedience is almost hopeless since they just want to see border collies). We’ve also bred the only winner in an agility competition at an International FCI show and several of our breedings have won unofficial Lure Coursing titles (we are not allowed to get official LC titles here). We have also bred a few specialty as well as a few BIS winners.

What do you think breeders have improved on during your years in the breed?

What one dog do you feel has been the most influential to our breed and why? This is a very complex question. Evn if we like to think about special dogs having had a great impact on the breed, I think it is more important to have many dogs influencing the breed to keep the genetic diversity and prevent bottlenecks in the breeding programs. There is never a good outcome in breeding programs if you discover that most of one generation of dogs are all cousins, due to everybody breeding for puppies out of a certain dog. But, of course, through the years some dogs have been used a lot and have had an impact on the breed’s development. Fula of The Congo, even though she was not bred much, still appears in many, many basenji pedigrees through her children and grandchildren.

What breeding or breedings of yours are you looking

The breed has changed a lot from our first one in 1960 to forward to in the coming year /years? the modern basenji. Our first basenji was of the Littlebreach type and was a little heavier The mixing of our new (L-R) Taimi - Jarrah - Gaia - Fagge - Chika and shorter on the leg and the African imports with our own next one was a Fula great lines. That is a breeding where I of the world suffered a lot of will get all our dogs’ pedigrees temperament problems in into the puppies so that will be 1960-1970, and I believe very exciting. All Gali’s pups are breeders all around the world a little big, but lovely tempered have worked hard to change and with a lot of strong breed that. Also, the introduction of points, some of which I think we the new Africans has played a are losing in the breed. The Q part in breeding better litter was in a way designed for tempered basenjis. So mixing one of those with Okapi things still and trends come and go. Some years you feel I really hope we will gain what we are looking for. heads are much better and then you think shoulders look better. Coats and colors are better now. UNITED KENNEL CLUB

PREMIER is returning to Kalamazoo, Michigan! June 16, 17, 18 & 19, 2011

United Kennel Club PREMIER Event Returns to the Kalamazoo County Expo Center & Fairgrounds Kalamazoo, MI – The United Kennel Club (UKC), Inc. PREMIER event will return to the Kalamazoo County Expo Center & Fairground on June 16-19, 2011. The UKC Premier™ Dog Show, which began in 1994, is regarded by many as a benchmark event for dog enthusiasts seeking to compete among the best in the world of competitive dog events. The four-day event is expected to feature thousands of dog entries representing well over 100 breeds. The event has been held annually in Kalamazoo since 2000 – with the exception of last year, when it traveled to Richmond, Indiana. “We are thrilled to welcome this event back to Kalamazoo,” said David Rachowicz, Kalamazoo County Parks Director. “Audiences look forward to this show each year because of its friendly, family-oriented atmosphere – and, of course, the dogs!” Premier is considered the ideal forum for UKC to showcase their philosophy of the Total Dog™, in which a dog should not only have the beauty necessary for the traditional show ring but also the ability to perform the functions and duties for which its breed was originally created.” said Wayne Cavanaugh, President of UKC, Inc. “We are delighted that Kalamazoo County has made the commitment to improve and expand the facility. The key to our decision was seeing that the construction is actually underway. The improvements will allow us to have the space and features necessary to showcase the variety of events that have made UKC Premier a success.” In addition to being the host site for the 2011 UKC event, the Kalamazoo County Expo Center will be breaking ground this winter on a $3 million dollar expansion project that will include a new 36,000 square foot building among other improvements. The entire project, funded through county accommodation taxes, is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2011. The additional space and upgrades will allow events like PREMIER to continue to grow. Currently, the Expo Center is home to over 100 national, regional and local events drawing over 250,000 visitors each year. United Kennel Club representatives are expecting over 5,000 entries from all over the nation and Canada for the June 2011 event. For more information about UKC or any upcoming UKC event, visit www.ukcdogs.com or call (269) 343-9020 Reprinted with permission from United Kennel Club, Inc. - Real Dogs for Real People, Your Total Dog Registry Since 1898. News from Canada By Arlene Bacon

W

elcome everyone! I’d like to thank everyone involved in supporting this magazine. It promises to be a wonderful magazine with great people at the helm. I’d personally like to thank Wanda Pooley for asking me to join her on this adventure. Wanda, as you may or may not know, is the former editor of our Basenji Club of Canada Newsletter, The Latest Wrinkle. Without her help, I would not have been able to continue to edit and publish the BCOC newsletter. Her vast experience will be invaluable to this publication as well. I’m sure this magazine will be a great success! In the future columns, the focus will be on the Canadian basenji scene. Canadians participate in many events with their basenjis. I will be reporting on standings in conformation, rally, obedience, (if any of us poor souls are brave enough to try!), United Kennel Club events, altereddog events, racing and any other activities that come across my desk. We all have a common goal to better the breed without losing focus of what the breed stands for. So, I’m hopeful that you will see wide and varied reports.. We also have many AKC dogs competing in Canada as well. This summer our annual Basenji Club of Canada National Specialty will be held in beautiful Fredericton, New Brunswick. Our Specialty Judge is Mr. John Forbes of

Australia; our Sweepstakes Judge is Marlene Corey of the Nova Scotia, Canada. The basenji Booster judge on August 1st is Dick McCoy of Ireland. Judges are pending CKC approval. The dates of these events are from July 29 to August 1, 2011. We look forward to having many different basenjis there and meeting new and old friends. We also, on occasion, have rescue basenjis in Canada as well. “Cleo” has been looking for a home for about 2 ½ years now. She is a red/white basenji that was originally from the US. If anyone would like to find out more about “Cleo,” contact Sue Wilcox at wilcox@ont.net. Also, I would like to congratulate Marie Heidebrecht on being the first Canadian to subscribe to The Modern Basenji magazine! She was also one of the very first to subscribe worldwide. I look forward to any suggestions and/or comments on anything anyone would like to hear or see about in the Canadian column. Please e-mail me to shadow_brat2004@ yahoo.ca. Thank you and enjoy the new The Modern Basenji!!

Visit http://www.basenjiclubofcanada.com/ to keep up on the news of the BCOC 2011 National Specialty and to learn more about us.

New Titling Event Coursing Ability Test New York, NY — The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) is pleased to announce the launch of a new titling event – the Coursing Ability Test. This new titling event is open to all dogs. The Coursing Ability Test is an introductory event fashioned after the sport of lure coursing and meant to be a fun, healthy activity for dogs and their owners. Coursing Ability Tests may be held by all licensed lure coursing clubs. Eligible dogs must be at least 12 months of age and individually registered/ listed with the AKC (registered purebred, Foundation Stock Service (FSS), Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) or AKC Canine Partner). In order to pass the test, a dog running alone must pursue a lure, completing the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a given time. “The Coursing Ability Test can provide a wonderful community outreach opportunity, an enjoyable experience for dogs and owners and a way to expose a wider audience to the sport, “ said AVP Performance Events Doug Ljungren. “Most dogs will chase a lure and have fun in the process.” Dogs that pass the Coursing Ability Test three times will earn a Coursing Ability (CA) title. Ten passes and a dog earns a Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title and 25 passes results in a Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) title. These Coursing Ability Tests are being held in conjunction with the Club’s normal Lure Coursing trial. Coursing Ability Tests may be held with a trial or as stand-alone events.

Upcoming events include: •

Northwest Arkansas Kennel Club, Mar. 19-20, Rogers, AR

Mid-Atlantic Hound Association of Central North Carolina, May 21-22, Rocky Mount, NC

The Coursing Ability Test is an introductory event fashioned after the sport of lure coursing to provide a fun and healthy activity attractive to many dog owners. Below is a summary of the Coursing Ability Rules and Regulations. Visit www.akc.org 1. Non-competitive pass / fail event fashioned after the sport of lure coursing. 2. Dogs run singularly. 3. Open to all dogs at least 12 months of age that are individually registered with the AKC, recorded in the FSS program, dogs with PAL numbers or dogs enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program. Females in season may not enter. A dog may enter only once per event. (An event is defined by an event number.) 4. Course distance / course design: Dogs under 12” at the withers and/or brachycephalic (“flat-faced”) dogs = approx. 300 yards Dogs over 12” at the withers that are not brachycephalic dogs = approximately 600 yards If there is a question whether a dog should run 300 or 600 yards, the judge will decide. The course will be basically rectangular in shape with turns no more acute than 90 degrees. Safety is of utmost importance. Since many of the dogs running will not be as agile as a sighthound, this must be a consideration in the design of the course. 5. An inspection committee shall inspect each entry for lameness, fitness to compete and females in season. 6. Pass: The dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a stated maximum amount of time. Max time: 600 yards - 2 minutes; 300 yards – 1½ minutes. The maximum time is not meant to be difficult to achieve. It is meant to prevent a dog that “walks” the course from passing. 7. To earn a suffix title: Three passes = Coursing Ability (CA); Ten passes = Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA); Twenty five passes = Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX); fifty passes = CAX2; a higher numbered title will be awarded for every additional twenty five passes. 8. All licensed LC clubs will automatically be licensed to hold a Coursing Ability test. Clubs may hold up to 8 Tests per calendar year. A club may not hold more than two Coursing Ability Tests on the same day. 9. A Coursing Ability Test can be either a stand-alone test or an event with a limited number of entries that follows a LC event. The Coursing Ability Test must be applied for as a separate event with its own event number. 10. Judge eligibility: All AKC approved LC judges are eligible. 11. Event applications: Paper or e-mail event applications will be accepted. Application forms will be downloadable from the AKC website. No on-line event application process will be available. 12. All necessary forms are downloadable from the AKC website. Approval and close-out correspondence will be done via e-mail. Event forms/booklets that are not easily downloadable can be requested by e-mail to the PE Department. In many cases clubs will have these forms/booklets as a result of holding lure coursing events. 13. Submittal of results: Clubs must mail event secretary reports and results.
