Throughout these issues, we discussed the roots of the basenji in deepest Africa, covered news of basenjis in such places as Australia, Brazil, Finland, Sweden, several countries in Africa, and United Kingdom. We presented a wide range of articles about health such as interpreting thyroid test results, vaccinosis, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, bone and joint disease, heartworm, and Fanconi. We interviewed breeders from around the globe; presented judging critiques on specialties in Russia, Estonia, Australia, Finland, Germany, Sweden, and, of course, the United States. TMB kept you abreast of all the new titling opportunities for our breed. The B-Legal Blog offered you a wide range of legal knowledge from how to manage co-ownerships, how clubs can limit their liability, new quarantine and importation regulations, how to be a proactive hobby breeder to puppy lemon laws and beyond. We presented an indepth 4-part series that explored the means of using artificial insemination as a breeding tool. We shared the loss of fellow basenji owners and breeders; celebrated every national specialty, discovered what people do with their basenjis - tracking, coursing, nose work, barn hunt, weight pulling, even hunting in Finland. We offered many personal stories from people who told about their first basenji or how their basenji interacted with another species such as an elephant. We brought you success stories and words of advice for finding your lost basenji. We gave you insight to some great show sites around the country. We debated the topic of genetics -- color, founders, origin, genome sequencing, even extinction. We compared breed standards around the world; talked about how to preserve that breed standard, explained how to handle an AKC inspection, shared a heart wrenching story about congenital defects in puppies, offered ideas for screening puppy buyers. In short, The Modern Basenji - Worldwide took considerable care to bring you information about basenjis, their owners, and their breeders from everywhere around the globe. And now it’s time to say farewell. After 20 years of working on publications, it’s time to open another door. For me, that door will be the excitement of having puppies and savoring every minute, knowing these will be the last for Adventureland.

Hi!

My name is

Yukon By Yukon Jack Birkenberger

Hi, my name is Yukon Jack Birkenberger and I will be 13 years old in November 2015. I’m a neutered male brindle basenji. I want to tell you my story about my medical condition.

I

was diagnosed with Prostatic Carcinoma, (Prostate Cancer) on May 27, 2015 and because this is a fast acting metastases cancer, I was given limited options for treatment. That’s because in eighty percent of dogs by the time they are diagnosed with this form of cancer, it has already metastased, meaning spread throughout the body. The doctors took X-rays, did ultrasound tests, and determined that my cancer probably had not metastased yet. However, they could not be 100% certain of this because a single cell might have already spread to other parts of my body. My symptom was that I had to pee frequently. My parents first thought I had a urinary/bladder infection and a test confirmed this so I was given an antibiotic to clear it up. After 10-14 days, though, I was still having the same problem. Six years ago I had a bladder stone, and because of this history, the doctors decided to do an ultrasound. It was a good thing, too, because that ultrasound showed a large mass on my prostate. Their initial thought was prostate cancer, but this was surprising to them

since I’m a neutered male dog. Prostate cancer most commonly affects large breed dogs, not like me. I do want to point out that a year earlier, the doctors did indicate my prostate was a little large but felt this was nothing to worry about as it isn’t untypical for older male dogs to sometimes get a larger prostate. We will never know if that was or wasn’t an early indication of what would lie ahead for me. Anyway, back to that mass the doctor found. We were sent to a specialist oncologist that very same day who did a biopsy in order to confirm and see what kind of cancer this might be. The biopsy did confirm the cancer, which left me with two choices: (1) Do nothing and probably have two weeks to live, or (2) pursue medical procedures that could hopefully extend my life up to another year and a half. Medical options were either low-dose radiation followed up by chemotherapy treatments or high-dose radiation treatments and chemotherapy treatments afterwards. Low-dose radiation would consist of 20 treatments given on weekdays over four to five weeks, with breaks for weekends and holidays. High-dose radiation would require seven treatments, a procedure that could be done at the University of North Carolina. However, the low-dose radiation had less risk of damaging my urethra or colon. Since surgical options to remove my prostate and the tumor were not well known by my doctors, we decided to go with the low-dose radiation treatments at the University of Georgia (UGA) Veterinary Medical Center in Athens, GA.

June 3, 2015. I went to UGA for pre-treatment tests. The first important test was a CAT scan (Computerized Axial Tomography) so they could target where the tumor was located. The technician then marked my body with an “X” to identify the location. My parents had asked about the kind of anesthesia that would be used during my CAT scan because they were concerned that I might get too much. Whoa! No kidding! After that first scan, for the next 48 hours I was barely conscientious and didn’t feel very well. I’m a basenji, and like all sighthounds, I don’t tolerate that much anesthesia. My parents asked the doctors about the kiind of anesthesia because if this was the way I was going to be after each treatment, then we were not sure this low-dose radiation was the way to go. A heavily sedated quality of life during the 20 treatments over the next several weeks would not be good. Plus, most people just dropped their pets off on Monday and picked them up on Friday and repeated this routine over the whole course of treatment. I didn’t like the sound of that. I could get depressed and would feel like my parents and canine sisters had abandoned me. June 8, 2015. Well, just like me, my parents didn’t like the effects that general anesthesia had on me and continued to search for other options. They talked with specialists from all over the country and discovered that the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in Auburn, AL did have some success in removing the prostate cancer in dogs, but the surgery came along with risks, such as incontinence after the surgery. So off we went to the Auburn vet hospital. After consulting with the doctors there, we found out that because the scan didn’t show the back of the tumor, they weren’t sure if they could remove all of it. The only way to know for sure was to do exploratory surgery and then make a determination. So, we all decided to have the surgery two days later on June 10th, knowing we would have to be there for about five to seven days for recovery. Once again my parents asked the doctors about how much anesthesia they were going Yukon undergoing radiation treatments using Isoflurane gas.

X Marks the spot for radiation! The shaved area on my rump was done while I was at Auburn. The doctors did another scan in attempt to see the tumor better.

to give me and explained what had happened to me at UGA. The doctors agreed to use Isoflurane gas, an inhalational anesthesia, instead of a general anesthesia, and I was taken to surgery. During that surgery, the doctors called my parents to tell them that the tumor was too big, with no clear way to extract it from blood vessels and nerve connections, so they closed me up. Because I had been given that Isoflurane gas instead of general anesthesia, I was awake, feeling fine and my parents were able to see me about 30 minutes after the surgery. The doctors did make me stay overnight; However, I had two people with me all night long, and my parents could visit me. I did eat some food that night, yummy good. I was so glad to see my parents at 8:00 the next morning and was ready to go home and do some running around. Okay, maybe I was really just walking, but it was good to be back with my parents and canine family. We did stay in the Auburn area for a few more days because my doctor wanted to do a follow up exam. I soon understood that because the doctors weren’t able to remove that tumor, we were back to pursuing those 20 low-dose radiation treatments at UGA. As you recall, we still had concerns with my being over-anesthetized and that I would miss my family if I had to be gone each week while the radiation was being done. Some more phone calls were made. First, my parents talked with the UGA doctors about changing the type of anesthesia they would give me. Could they come up with a different protocol that would have less aftereffects on me? My parents also assured my doctors they were going to be staying in town and could watch me closely each day. Something was finally agreed upon, and my first radiation treatment was scheduled to begin in seven to 10 days. June 12 - 14, 2015. Since the radiation treatments wouldn’t start until after I healed from my recent surgery, we all decided to go to Thomasville to visit friends and see my roots, the UnderCover Basenji clan. That was okay with me as I needed a break We had lots of fun

walking in the woods and seeing the other dogs, cats, and horses. I was running some of the time even though I wasn’t suppose to because of my stitches, but I just couldn’t resist. I was having fun with everyone! June 15, 2015. UGA Veterinary Medical Center, in Athens, GA. My parents rented a place near the veterinary hospital. Misty and Kyndyl, my canine sisters, came, too. We arrived a day early to review everything and were able to confirm that the doctors agreed to change the method of anesthesia. The plan was that my parents would drop me off around 9:00-9:30 am, depending on when the doctors were ready for me. I would be given that inhalational gas, Isoflurane, and about an hour after the treatment I would be ready to go back to my family. On June 16, 2015. I went in for my first treatment. It took only about an hour, and I was able to run out to greet my parents. The doctors were surprised at how well I did and said that they would continue using Isoflurane gas during my treatments. I went right home and ate my breakfast, napped, played with my canine sisters and just

Snuggled in the middle, just kicking back after radation treatments

enjoyed myself for the rest of the day. I followed this same routine for all 20 treatments, and the only side effect I had was a little diarrhea. The doctors did give me a steroid (Prednisone) after 10 treatments to address any possible side effects of the radiation, though I didn’t seem to have any. I felt great! By July 14, I had finished all 20 treatments, and we all headed back home to North Atlanta to figure out the next step – chemotherapy -- which would begin in two weeks. July 28, 2015. I started my first chemotherapy treatment back home at my regular vet clinic. The doctors decided to use the chemo drug Mitoxantrone. It is given intravenously (IV) and because the

drug only stays in the body for 48 hours, I need more frequent treatments at threeweek intervals. These can continue as long a s t u m o r d o e s n’t grow. On my first treatment I was not allowed to eat any breakfast because I had to have an ultrasound so they could see the size of the tumor. It would take 12 weeks after all those the radiation treatments, to see if the tumor had shrunk. However, after that first dose of chemotherapy, I was feeling very good. I went home and ate my breakfast, ran around, played with Getting an acupuncture treatment my canine sisters, and sat outside in the sun. Some of the side effects of the chemotherapy can be vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and a temperature above 102.5 deg., and about 10 percent of dogs require some sort of hospitalization. None of those have occurred with me yet. A few days after chemo, I went back to the doctors for a blood test. If my white blood count was low, it could indicate an infection of some sort. This first time my WBC was low so they prescribed Zeniquin (an antibiotic) for a week. Acupuncture is also part of my treatment because some studies have shown this may help shrink the tumor. I don’t mind the needles; I’m suppose to be very still and not move around much, so they offer me ice cream to be still. Yummy! Three week later, I had my next chemo treatment. I’m allowed to eat breakfast before my chemotherapy treatments if I don’t need to have an ultrasound test done. They tested my white blood count again, and this time my status was good. White blood count is tested the day of each chemo treatment and and if it is on the low side, they know they will need to do a follow-up WBC test about a week later. My parents, being well prepared, have what they call an emergency kit for me. In case I get a temperature over 102.5 deg. that might indicate an infection or if I get sick, like vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite, they have pills I can take, but so far I’ve not had any problems. I am very happy and enjoy life one day at a time. My parents try to make sure that my chemo treatments are only about an hour which requires them to work this out with the doctors office, rather than to just drop me off in the morning and pick me up later in the day. Going home right after my chemo treatments really helps me a lot because I don’t have to hang out at the clinic in a crate all day getting depressed. One of the medications that I’ve been on since I was diagnosed with cancer is call Piroxicam, a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. I also get a Pepcid® to help prevent my getting an ulcer

from taking the Piroxicam. A major risk with prostate cancer is that it can cause an obstruction and inhibit the ability to pass urine or affect the kidneys, which would lead to kidney failure. The cancer can also spread/metastasize to other parts of the body. Sept 29, 2015. I have now had four chemotherapy treatments over the past 12 weeks and am ready for another ultrasound test. Today’s ultrasound shows the tumor has gotten a little smaller and is considered stable. Great news -- picture major wagging of my curly tail and loud Yodel!! The Mitoxantrone chemo drug can be given for as long as it is tolerated (treatment every 3 weeks for X number of months) or as long as the cancer tumor has not grown. If the tumor stays the same or gets smaller, my doctor will continue with the chemo treatments based on good WBC test results. I’ve been doing really

great, eating all the time, playing with my canine sisters, cuddling with my parents, and walking about one to three miles a day when it’s not raining outside. So, our plan is to continue on our path of having chemotherapy every three weeks and ultrasound tests every 12 weeks to monitor the size of the tumor. We have been told that usually chemotherapy works for only a limited amount of time. Our hope is that it just keeps working as long as it is possible. I’ll keep you posted

FUNCTION OF THE PROSTATE

It contains many valuable and essential enzymes, including calcium and citric acid. However, it plays an important role in the protection and motility of sperm by producing prostatic fluid that aids the semen after ejaculation and protects the sperm in the vagina.

PROSTATE CANCER IN DOGS

Other than humans, dogs are the only other mammals with a significant incidence of spontaneous prostate cancer. Adenocarcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, and undifferentiated (unknown) carcinoma are the most common types of cancers. Prostate cancer can occur in both intact and neutered males, usually older, large dogs. It is interesting to note that while castration does not initiate the development of prostate carcinoma, it does favor its tumor progression. Canine prostatic carcinoma is capable of growing and metastasizing quickly to the lymph nodes, lungs, liver, spleen, and bone. By the time symptoms present themselves the carcinoma is already at an advanced stage making the survival rate very low.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms may vary depending upon the presence, extent, and location of metastasis to other parts of the body. These symptoms are commonly seen in adenocarcinoma of prostate: • • • •

Ribbon-shaped stool Poor appetite Weight loss Difficulty in passing urine

• • • •

Complete urine blockage Pain, especially when the area of prostate is touched Fever Difficult breathing

DIAGNOSIS Palpation of the prostate is the first step. This is done through either the abdominal wall or the rectal wall. Further examination will most likely include ultrasound or radiographs to diagnose an enlarged prostate gland. An enlarged prostate is common with other prostatic diseases, such as bacterial infections, and these should be ruled out during the initial examination.

TREATMENT

Canine Prostate Carcinoma Cell

REFERENCES:

There is no single definitive treatment for dogs with adenocarcinoma of the prostate gland. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be used to increase the survival time of the dog. However, treatment should be done by a veterinary oncologist. Surgery to remove the prostate gland is difficult and mostly unrewarding with the possibility of leaving permanent side effects such as constant urine leakage. In addition, postoperative complications are high and difficult to manage. At this stage, castration as a means to curb the growth of the tumor would be ineffective. Chemotherapy is used as supportive care following radiation treatments.

THE BASENJI - Judging Thousands of Years of Survival

By Wanda Pooley

In the 15,000 to 20,000 years since dogs have been traced back to the wolf, the first emerging breeds might be considered the diverse raw material for all the dog breeds we know today. These original dogs were known only for their type, their use to man, and their ability to adapt in isolated areas, especially at the end of last glacial period when land masses separated into islands with the melting of ice sheets. Some dogs accompanied nomadic tribes into Eastern Asia, but on the continent of Africa, one of those first dogs, according to palaeontologists, was very much like the basenji. The basenji-like dog made an appearance in civilization at the dawn of history. His likeness is pictured in bas-relief and sculptured in stone dating as far back as 4000 B.C. This basenji-like dog, a keen hunter with strong survival skills, was highly valued by natives of the Congo basin who placed considerable emphasis on the dog’s intelligence, courage, and adaptability. It persevered though many thousands of years because of its ability to adjust to its ever changing environment.

Judges, armed with this knowledge, need to consider these ancient roots when basenjis enter the show ring. This is a dog that is best judged moving rather than standing still. The basenji is an alert dog that is quick to respond to sights, sounds, and movements. Keep in mind that while stacked, the basenji is not likely to stand in that position for any length of time, especially on the exam table. Its keen sense of survival heightens this breed’s awareness to everything around it.

APPEARANCE -

Moderate is the magic word to describe a basenji. Everything about the basenji is moderate, from its size to the angles of its body to its movement. Foremost, the basenji is a square dog -- not long-coupled, nor short-legged. The phrase “...give the impression of being high on leg” should portray a dog with ample length of upper arm, yet also have a good depth of brisket. Do not confuse “high on leg” to mean long legs. A dog that is high on leg is not bouncing or pounding along the ground. It is gliding effortlessly with each leg fully extended during the full stroke of the stride.

GAIT -

The basenji is an elegant and graceful animal. As described in the breed standard, “The balanced structure and the smooth musculature enables it to move with ease and agility.” The stride of a basenji should always appear to be effortless, ground-covering, and have the greatest Continued on page 14

Effortless, ground-covering, and economy of motion.

economy of motion. This pace should be able to be maintained for considerable distance.

THE TABLE -

Approach the basenji from the side, not from behind. When examining its head avoid making eye contact. While this statement can be applied to most breeds, the basenji, with its far-seeing view of the world, is not likely to avert its eyes as a sign of submission. This is still a primal breed. A mere 80 years of domestication as we know it has made only a small dent in the thousands of years this ancient dog roamed Africa. Yet, be assured the basenji appreciates confident humans that approach him. The basenji needs to have strong, pliant skin, a safety mechanism that protects the dog while it works in the bush chasing game or when attackers might grab at him. It is this loose, pliant skin that produces those profuse wrinkles we like to see in basenjis. The best way to test the pliancy of the skin is to stroke or gently rub the back. There is no need to grab a handful of skin and pull up and doing so might create an adverse reaction.

Breeders have come a long way towards improving temperament since those early years when basenjis were known to be unapproachable. Today, even though the breed still maintains that aloofness that hallmarks a basenji, it should be willing to stand for exam. To make this a positive experience for the dog and for the examiner, it is worth noting some important points during the table exam.

Approach the basenji from the side, not from behind.

The tail should never be uncurled. It is uncomfortable for the basenji and unnecessary to examine the tail set. Without even touching the dog, it is easy to see the set of the its tail in the picture above. Moreover, straightening a tightly curled tail can even be painful for the dog. The breed standard emphasizes that the set of the tail is more important than the tightness or even the amount of the curl. The tail set is derived from a properly assembled pelvis that gives the appearance of a good shelf. A visual examination is all that is necessary. Continued on page 15

THE CASE OF THE DISAPEARING RIB CAGE In the decades since the basenji was accepted into the AKC studbook, the breed has experienced little departure in its overall structure. However, recently one important area has been changing and is worth noting in this article because this deviation will eventually have serious consequences with the stamina and endurance of the basenji. I mentioned earlier that the basenji should have an effortless, ground-covering gait that can be maintained for considerable distance. This is a working dog. When the rib cage shortens in length, the capacity for the lungs and heart is reduced; hence the stamina of the basenji diminishes. The herring gut, or lack of rib cage length, is a very serious structural fault in any dog, and especially for any breed that is expected to run or trot for sustained periods. This deformity occurs when the breast bone swings upward too soon. The curve should begin at rib 9. When this upward swing occurs at rib 6 or 7 the space for the lungs and heart is decreased because the remaining ribs are now too short. Some people confuse the appearance of a shorten rib cage with the tuck on a dog. However, there is a significant difference between a herring gut and good tuck on a basenji. A herring gut is that upswing of the breast bone that begins at the elbow; a good tuck up is that underline of the abdomen, not the rib cage, that goes upward into the flank.

TOP PHOTO: This basenji has good length of rib cage to provide ample space for the heart and lungs. BOTTOM PHOTO: The rib cage on this basenji is too short thus reducing the heart and lung capacity. Using the point of the shoulder as a reference point, the horizontal line on each dog demonstrates the lengths of each rib bone. By rib 7, the dog in the bottom photo has progressively shorter ribs from that point to the end of its rib cage.

Moreover, according to MacDowell Lyon, author of The Dog In Action, the dog’s body depth should be measured based on the depth of the 9th rib and not at that point directly behind the elbow as has been more commonly done. Look at the full body of the basenji when grading the depth of the rib cage rather than just glance at the point of the elbow.

far a basenji can travel. All breeders should be aware of the whole dog when making breeding choices. Good structure should never be replaced or overlooked by the illusion of a trim look that is not correct and will not sustain the basenji’s endurance. h

To illustrate this point, in the pictures above the basenji on the top has a good length of rib, thus providing plenty of room for the heart and lungs. On the other hand, the basenji in the bottom picture, while it may appear to have a trim underline, has a shortened rib cage. Note how soon the upswing in the ribs occurs. Decreasing the length of the rib cage will cause serious ramifications on how long and how

In 2012 the Basenji Club of America, Inc. published a new color version of the Basenji Illustrated Standard that has greatly expanded the study of the basenji. It can be viewed online at www.basenji.org and is also available at no cost to judges. For the fancier, this material can be purchased in hardcopy from the Online Shopping page of the website.

OZZIE and JUJU Discover Nose Work

N

ose Work®, or scent work, is relatively new dog sport with several organizations now holding trials. The common feature of these trials is that dogs seek out and somehow indicate that they have found “hides” with cotton swabs holding essential oil odors. The most common sequence of odors is birch, anise, and clove. Searches are meant to simulate the kind of activities that professional scent detection dogs (drugs, bombs, agricultural products) perform. Dogs search a set of identical boxes or other containers placed in an interior room, exterior areas, and vehicles. Searches at different levels of competition become increasingly difficult, and dogs eventually have to search for the odor rather than the distraction odor of food or toys. I didn’t go looking for Nose Work training. In fact I had never heard of it. I happened upon it when taking a break from obedience and agility training. I’d gone down a training path that wasn’t working

well, and Ozzie, in particular, seemed shut down, no longer happy or excited about going to training classes or lessons. Once upon a time he had yodeled when entering his rally obedience class. Now he was running for his crate, the car, or the gate just wanting to go home. Juju had never been crazy about training, though she had spurts of enthusiasm about agility. However, she was nervous with people or dogs watching her and frequently froze at the start line. I knew it was time to quit or make a change. I sought out another instructor and learned that she was holding only Nose Work classes, under the auspices of the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). Under an agreement with other local NACSW instructors, she was specializing in “reactive” dogs. That turned out to be ideal since both Ozzie and Juju needed increased confidence. And Juju needed controlled exposure to other dogs and to practice doing an activity with at least one person watching. Continued on page 20

The Leersburg Kit - purchased commercially

Assorted Nose Work equipment

We began the classes along with five or six other people and their dogs. The NACSW approach begins with the dogs searching for food in cardboard boxes (a great thing when you get lots of things from Amazon!). The boxes may be piled on each other or objects may be on the boxes so that the dog has to search excitedly and get to the “hide.” They self-reward by eating the treat in the box, and the handler is supposed to quickly move in and reward with more treats right at the location of the first treat. Over time, we progressed to what is called “pairing” -- having both cotton swabs with Birch odor and small pieces of food. The emphasis is on the independence of the dog and their enthusiasm for searching. A good group of people were training and even bought the limited equipment required: the oils, small jars to hold cotton swabs cut in half and scented with the oil, forceps or tweezers to handle the swabs, and other small containers of various sorts to place the swabs. Having some containers with magnets and others that can be stuck in small crevices, such as straws, is useful for practice I’ve also used a set of plastic Easter eggs. I also got a waterproof box to hold some equipment for taking along in the car to practice.

Unfortunately, I could not take both dogs to the same trial. Most tests and trials allow only one dog per handler. This saves the work crew from having to create multiple versions of the test, moving the box that the odor was in for a second dog’s handler. The other odd thing for those of us used to other kinds of trials is that you are NOT allowed to have your dog hanging out with you under your canopy tent or while walking around talking to people. They don’t want you to see the search areas, so where you can go is limited,. This also minimizes any stress for reactive dogs. And frankly, I think they don’t want the people socializing too much and sharing where the “hides” are! Plan to spend a lot of time in or near your vehicle with your main focus on keeping your dog comfortable.

At the ORT, because Ozzie had only practiced on Birch, this was the only odor I registered him for. I’ve since learned that introducing additional odors is relatively quick so he might have passed all three in one day. You can enter a dog for all the ORT odors as each has to be set up separately anyway. Oz passed on his first try, and we continued to go to classes. Our instructor decided to focus on other activities, and the training group started to fall apart. We kept on going anyway, trying out some other instructors and eventually I was able to get Ozzie through his Anise and Clove ORTs, and Juju through Birch and Clove. Just last weekend Juju passed her final ORT for Anise!. During that period, I discovered that United Kennel Club (UKC) also offered a version of Nose Work tests and trials that are quite similar Continued on page 21

Juju on the scent as she works her way through a pattern of boxes.

Both dogs went to class, and both progressed quickly. They became excited again about going to training, and I found that the trainer and the other people were relaxed and supportive. I joined NACSW (there’s an annual membership fee and an initial fee to register each dog) and received a membership card along with scorebook for each dog. Each dog’s scorebook is then presented to judges to record “passing” or “missed” scent objects at tests and trials. Ozzie was the first in our training group to go to the first competitive level in NACSW: the Odor Recognition Test or ORT using the first scent – Birch. He passed! The ORT involves 12 identical boxes laid in a pattern in a room, placed in either one or two rows. The boxes are like cake boxes, with a lid that has tabs that fold into the box, rather than like the typical cardboard boxes with flaps that fold in on each other. from the bench to start our grid properly. He eventually got back to the bench, quickly sniffed another end of the bench, went back to the end he had been sniffing, jumped on the bench, and I called “alert” (the response to tell the judge your dog has found the odor) – for the wrong end of the bench. I could have realized he was trying to find the source of the odor initially, let him go all around the bench to locate it, and we might have succeeded. As it was, I got two faults – one for me pulling him off the odor to begin with and another for him jumping on the bench and disturbing the search area. And I had not called “alert” for the correct end of the bench. Back to looking for trials. Our next effort is going to be a UKC “elements” trial, rather than a full-blown trial with all four elements – containers, interior, exterior, and vehicles. Elements trials may contain only a single element with more than one search. In NACSW, one passing score on an element gets you that element title. In UKC, you have to pass at two trials. To enter the UKC trials, your dog needs to be UKC registered, either as a purebred or mixed-breed. Since Ozzie is AKC registered, getting his UKC registration was easy, and in fact, we already had both dogs UKC registered to compete in UKC obedience, rally, and agility trials in the area. h

NOSE WORK ORGANIZATIONS: Ozzie starting his search for scent on a vehicle

to NACSW in the structure. UKC even accepts the ORT as an equivalent to their pretrial tests. In fact, a number of different organizations are now offering trials in the U.S. and Canada. Canada is dominated by the Sporting Detection Dog Association (SDDA) which has started offering trials in the northeast U.S. Other organizations include C-WAGS and Performance Scent Dogs. Some of these organizations prefer a “trained response” when the dog finds the odor. This adds a required Sit, Down or comparable behavior after the dog points his nose toward the source of the odor. NACSW focuses more on learning what response your dog naturally has and observing that. We are now working with a new teacher who has experience with search and rescue dog training. Juju is very excited about training there, especially when her friend, Radar, a large male German Shorthair Pointer, comes! She’s gone through practices where she again has been frozen and distracted by people watching, and others where she has been on fire and searching like crazy! Oz is more consistent and more assertive in telling me he has found the odor. Juju likes to do a quick dip of her nose and assume that I saw her and understood! It’s a good sport to teach you to watch and trust your dog. Ozzie and I went to our first NACSW trial recently and if Ozzie had a better handler he would have passed! He did great on containers, interior, and vehicle. The exterior search presented some problems. He began to pull me immediately toward a plastic bench, but his behavior didn’t seem quite right to me compared to the way he normally responds when he finds the odor (that’s called his indication). I suddenly realized I had meant to start him off searching in a grid beginning on one side or the other of the marked off area. So I pulled him away

The Tide Is High:

Can Parent Clubs Hold On? Readers of a certain age may recall the old Blondie tune, “The Tide is High” – including the chorus: “The tide is high, but I’m holding on, ‘cause I wanna be your number one!” Over the last couple of years, a topic that has surfaced recurrently is the ongoing relevance of AKC parent clubs (although the same questions, concerns and challenges are applicable to any single-breed club that represents its breed at a national level.)

By Karla Schreiber, Esq.

Of course, parent clubs are still relevant in the sense that they are liaisons between breed fanciers and the agencies that provide registration and eventing services to the breed. Without that liaison function, we could ask whether parent clubs, as we know them today, would ever have come into being in the first place. What about the other functions of parent clubs – the functions geared toward rank and file members and the public? In an era when animal rights groups continue to vilify breeders and desperately attempt to turn the public against the very notion of purebred dogs, and when social media and associated technology make it fast, easy, and inexpensive for fanciers to communicate directly with one another and directly with the public, are parent clubs retaining the relevance, influence, and “hub of the wheel” status they once did? Are they still our “Number one?” For many reasons, some of which are discussed below, the tide appears to be not only high, but continuously “rising” for parent clubs as they struggle to redefine their rolls in a rapidly changing social and economic landscape. The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 22

First, we must acknowledge that some of the forces impacting the ongoing relevance of parent clubs have nothing to do with the quality of club management, outreach, or services offered to members and the public. Parent clubs can’t control the global economy. Over the last decade in particular, hard economic times and a general reduction in disposable income (and time) to spend on hobbies has caused the purebred dog world to contract. We only need to peruse AKC’s most recently published registration numbers to see that there’s a problem. In many parts of the world, the hobby of purebred dogs had expanded exponentially over the years from its beginnings as a sport for the wealthy to a sport with a health middle class and even lower middle class participation base. However, as financial hard times descended, impacting all but the wealthiest fanciers, hard choices were required. The typical fancier, when faced with economic problems like the loss of a job, reduced income, etc. will “cut the fluff” first. The dogs themselves are not “fluff,” so if there is a choice between paying for adequate food and vet care for existing animals, or breeding litters, showing and eventing dogs, paying for entry fees, gasoline, and lodging, the obvious choice is that some activities and expenditures must be eliminated or restricted to fit a shrinking budget.

It’s time to come out from under the covers and face this important issue together.

Likewise, parent clubs can’t control the meteoric rise of social media, such as Facebook®, Instagram®, and Twitter®. Most parent clubs have at least some social media presence at this point (which is a good thing.) However, what has the rise of social media and “direct contact” between fanciers world-wide cost parent clubs? This issue isn’t as cut and dried as the impact of a tilta-whirl global economy on hobby activities of the middle class, but I do think the impact is significant. In times past, parent clubs were a proverbial hub in the wheel for fanciers nationally and to some extent internationally. Just two decades ago, the ability of fanciers to share photos, brags, stud dog and brood bitch information, health testing results, and other breed-specific information was extraordinarily limited compared to what we can do today. I still vividly remember waiting with anticipation for a couple of months to see an ad I’d placed for a dog or a litter. Now? I can share a nice win instantly – with 600+ of my ‘closest friends’ world-wide on Facebook®! I can likewise share information, health test results, and litter plans, as well as just day-today “fun” photos and vignettes about my dogs. Flip that around and I can also see, with just a click or two, the photos, wins, litter plans, and funny vignettes of all of my Facebook® friends. While there is

unequivocally something to be said for print publications that we can hold in our hands and leave out on our coffee tables, the bottom line is that instant sharing is novel and fun, and it is also effective branding and advertising to a targeted audience (our Facebook® friends) who are likely to be interested in what we share about our dogs. In the past, this “sharing” experience – which is very pleasurable for most of us – was only possible through ads in parent club publications and any independent breed-specific publications to the extent that they existed. In short, the sense of camaraderie and community that used to come from parent club membership is now achieved through other means that involve instantaneous, positive feedback from a pre-selected and accepting audience. These are factors parent clubs cannot control, but what about the things they can control? How can parent clubs, faced with their own dwindling resources, address the changing landscape in the purebred dog world, and find new ways to remain relevant to a diminishing membership base? If the avowed purpose of parent breed clubs is to preserve, protect, and promote their chosen breeds, it goes without Continued on page 24

saying that clubs can only continue to accomplish these critical goals if they respond appropriately to the rapidly changing environment at hand. Here are a few of those choices and possible responses: CONTRACTION: Yes, this is as painful – at least initially – as it sounds. All of the events, and other services that parent clubs provided to members in years gone by must be carefully examined, one by one, in light of the changing landscape. Length and location of national club events must be considered. Timing of events (every year, every other year?) must be considered. Can breed hard-copy publications be streamlined, combined, or even dispensed with? Making sure that what the club does is reasonably related to its current and long-term financial prognosis is critical if parent clubs are going to be there for their breeds and for the fanciers in the future. RESPONSIVENESS TO MEMBERS: This is a critical for parent clubs in the best of times, but as membership numbers dwindle, and the types of members parent clubs attract change (skewing, perhaps, away from hobby breeders and eventers to companion dog owners) parent club are faced with hard choices. Will they continue to cater primarily to the old-school, hardcore breeder/eventers, or will they decide to expand the breadth and scope of activities to other types of members? Will a shift in focus require changes in the by-laws and classes of membership (voting v. non-voting)? Should voting to change by-laws and the breed standard be reserved to a specific class of members or open to all members as the environment morphs and changes? Should the club’s membership process become It just takes team work. more open (expansive) or closed (restrictive)? There are no right or wrong answers to these questions – the best answers will depend on an analysis of the facts and circumstances faced by each club and each breed. OUTREACH TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC: Today, each parent club must have a social media presence as well as its own website. What is the appropriate tone and focus of the club’s social media presence? In addition to presenting the club’s breed-of-choice to the public in a positive light, parent clubs must also be responsible for presenting purebred dogs and responsible breeders in a positive light. The tasks involved in appropriate outreach are expanding and diversifying at a time when other aspects of parent club management are becoming less significant. LEADERSHIP: In good times, mediocre leaders with average leadership skills can steer a parent club along a relatively straight and uncomplicated

course. In times of great change, however, the quality of the club’s leadership becomes a critical component in whether the club will survive and continue to fulfill its primary goals of preserving, protecting, and promoting its breed. Faced with changing membership numbers, demographics, the demands of a social media presence, financial changes, and negative messages about breeders and purebred dogs promoted by the animal rights activists, parent club officers and boards must be capable of working closely with one another and with the membership in transparent relationships that build trust, confidence, and cohesion. Average leadership skills will not suffice in times like these. If parent clubs still want to be number one with their members - despite the “high tide” they are facing - they must demand and select leaders who eschew promoting personal agendas, have the business skills necessary to guide the club through the rocky shoals ahead, and who possess the interpersonal skills and creativity to determine, by trial and error if necessary, what is working and what is not in terms of the club’s short and long term survival. Blaming club members for changing times is not a leadership skill. Good leaders find ways to lead that unify and strengthen their clubs in times of change and diversification or contraction, and are committed to doing whatever it takes to preserve, protect, and promote the breed – the sole purposes for which parent clubs exist. All of the “extras” we’ve come to associate with parent clubs mean very little if club leaders lose sight of these goals and focus on easier goals – like making specific contingents of members happy, engaging in busy work, promoting “feel good, fuzzy” ©Dave Thompson accomplishments, etc. Last, but not least, a changing environment demands leaders who can rally and energize club members to want to participate in club affairs, while at the same time, understand that a changing landscape may mean members have less time, money and other resources to contribute to the club. A lack of membership response doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of desire to respond – and parent club officers and directors are tasked with the job of determining what members can reasonably be asked to contribute. In conclusion, I want to thank everyone who has supported this column over the years (both here in The Modern Basenji – Worldwide, and in other venues). This will be my final column, as I move forward with personal career opportunities and my own basenji-related endeavors. I hope I’ll be able to provide, from time to time, some thought-provoking articles to grace these pages on a less regular basis. So long, for now!

MY WORLD

Hi out there in “Senjiland!” BY KYA, THD

M

any things have happened here since last we touched bases. But first -- you should see my oh-so-soft bed. I could not believe that my mom would buy me such a wonderful thing. I can curl up or stretch out or just sit in it -- whatever I want to do -- and it stays so soft. It is one of my favorite possessions. The second bit of news I have to share is that we have new addition to our household. His name is Chico. Mom says he is a rat terrier, but let me tell you he has about the biggest mouth (noise-wise) I have ever heard. His food is all gone while I am still looking at mine. I thought Budboy ate fast, but this little upstart is so fast that Budboy has his meal maybe, just maybe, only a third gone in that time. Mom told her friend she wanted to start training a new dog to assist me in my therapy work now and then. Overall he is tolerable. I DO NOT share my bed, but I have let him USE it a few times when I am doing something else. However, he found out in short order that I DO NOT share my food or my treats. When he plays with Budboy he gets nipped in the butt now and then. Of course, he runs to hide behind mom. I have informed Chico that I am the reigning monarch in this household; the one who oversees and governs all cats and dogs, and what I say is absolute law! Sometimes I do not think he knows who the boss is because on occasion I still have to put him in his place when he has “laughed” at me. Other than that, he is a cute little guy. Wonder of wonders, that dog knows what ‘sit’ and ‘down’ commands are and has never had an ‘accident’ in the house. He also has fairly good manners. Chico bites at Buster the cat’s ears and I’m just waiting until he actually connects and Buster shows him a claw or two. I bet he will think twice about nipping at the ears. Otherwise he is fine with the cats, fine with company, and seems to be adjusting pretty well. I have a new neighbor. When I first saw him I thought he was Chico, but then I realized that he has a longer tail than Chico. His name is Studly. The only reason I know that is because I heard his

owner call him when he took off after one of the feral cats, but like me he came back when he was called. He isn’t as cute as Chico, though, but I’ll keep that to myself. Aside from news about this new rat terrier, I am still expecting to see another one of us to materialize somewhere down the road. Mom says no more puppies and I certainly agree with that. I just do not think I could adjust to a little puppy no matter how cute or adorable it may be. Maybe it’s because there haven’t been any puppies around here for a long, long time. More good news! We have a new back porch that goes into the backyard. We can now run in and out at random. However, it’s also a little sad because we don’t take as many walks with mom as we did before that porch appeared. I have some butterflies in my tummy because mom told me I ams entered in my first real competition. We will see how that goes. Who knows, maybe I will do better than I think or maybe I will be so ashamed of my score I will not tell anyone. I have visited some rather interesting places lately, namely a big building called Petco and wonder of wonders I got to go inside! It was wonderful. I got to browse the shelves and sniff so many delightful things. I even tried to lift a few but mom said shoplifting (whatever that is) wasn’t allowed . I can absolutely assure everyone assure that there is no way I could ever lift a shop. Who does she think I am --Paul Bunyan??? I also had the privilege of entering a real estate office. I was on my best behavior but I cannot understand why they call it real. Clearly it’s a real office and it’s obvious that everyone else will know it is real office, too. With the cooler weather my shoulder seems to stirring up trouble. I guess that means I will have to go back to see Dr. Jen for more treatments and whatever else it is that she does that makes that shoulder feel so good. Now if anyone out there would like to have a nice indoor kitty, just let me know. I’ll tell mom that would make one less mouth to feed. I won’t tell her about it though until I have a confirmed home. Halloween has coming and gone by now. I hope you all had stunning costumes, and no one recognized you as you went trick or treating. I didn’t have go out because I know where mom keeps the bag of treats. If I sit there long enough she usually comes and doles out one or two treats. Have a happy turkey day and be on your best behavior for Christmas. Just remember....the secret of contentment is knowing how to enjoy what you have, and not long for things beyond your reach.h
