has opened doors to many new opportunities for competition with AKC registered dogs. In 2012, the National Owner Handled Series was introduced to recognize quality dogs exhibited by owner/handlers and to provide a means for the owner/ handlers to compete against their peers. The judging of this competition awards the quality of the entry without the usual considerations given to professional handling skills. The first year-end competition for all dogs that finished in the Top 10 for their breed was held in December 2013 in conjunction with the AKC/Eukanuba show.

ELIGIBILITY: • Dogs must be owned or co-owned by the handler. • Professional handlers are not allowed to compete even if they own or co-own the dog. • Household members and current assistants to professional handlers are not allowed to compete. • The owner-handler must show the dog throughout the entire breed level competition and into Group judging if the dog and handler are awarded breed Best Owner Handled (BOH.) If a replacement handler is needed, that handler must also be listed as an owner. • The exhibitor must check the 'Yes' box for Owner-Handler Eligible on the entry form. If this box is not checked, the dog will not be considered for this competition. Judging of the Owner-Handled competition is held immediately following the Best of Breed judging. All dogs eligible remain in the ring and all professional handlers are excused. If the dog that wins Best of Breed is also owner-handled, it automatically wins Best Owner Handled. If this is not the case, the judge then selects the BOH from the eligible dogs. This winner will then goes on to compete in the Group Owner-Handled competition. How do you enter? Vermin have always been a problem on farms, especially dairy farms with large herds of cattle that need plenty of grain and hay to keep milk production high. The hay and straw are just perfect for making nests. Many farmers depend on their dogs to ferret out rodents that invade the buildings. What has been a necessity in real life eventually became a new competition event for dog owners who live in suburbia where life is more orderly and sterile.

hat began as an informal activity during some Earth trials is now barn hunt, a fully organized, sanctioned competition. Dogs can earn titles, ranging from the Rat Instinct Test (RATI) up through the highest level, Barn Hunt Master Champion Excellent (RATChX.) Three height divisions are offered; basenjis work in the Medium division. While standing outside a ring at an AKC show in Austin, TX last October, some of us spotted a sign fastened to a post next to our ring announcing Barn Hunt Practice. This raised a few comments so we decided to find the practice area after basenji judging was finished. At the far end of the building we found a group of dedicated barn hunt experts who were educating visitors about the sport. After listening to the explanation, we were invited to bring some dogs for a practice session for a mere $5.00 per dog. Excited with the prospect of learning something new, we all trotted back to our setups to get a basenji or two. I brought a young tri bitch, Annabelle, and Cindy Griswold came with her brindle bitch, Tunda. Mike and Chris Graves decided to let their tri basenji, Zee, have a go at it. The purpose of the practice is to learn if your dog has a "ratting" instinct. Good barn ratters burrow through the hay while searching for vermin; they are up and down and all around the barn in their quest. We forgot to mention that bit of news to our basenjis, who live rather pristine lives compared to the average farm dog.

Before each basenji began, it was introduced to the rat. Barn Hunt has very specific requirements for the care and safety of the rats. From the description the rat handler gave us, it seems the stars of the event have a pretty good union.

On her first practice run, Annabelle wouldn't even entertain the idea of going through a dark, narrow space. She didn't see any purpose to jumping on the hay bales either. Annabelle would raise up and look over at me, but clearly, jumping wasn't on her agenda. She did make me proud, though, when she detected the tube with the rat! Annabelleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second practice was much better. She managed to be convinced that the tunnel wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so scary and that jumping up on the bales wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t such a bad thing.

For a dog to demonstrate ratting instinct, it is challenged within a maze of hay and straw bales positioned to encourage the dog to tunnel and climb. However, since the purpose is to correctly identify which PVC tube holds the rat, tunneling and climbing aren't mandatory to pass the Rat Instinct Test. The dog has two minutes to accomplish this feat. Mike's dog, Zee, charged right through the course the first time. He didn't even hesitate in the maze, shot through the tunnel of hay, and then quickly zeroed in on the rat.

Tunda (pictured below) was interested in the activity, and she sure knew something was up. With little coaching from Cindy, Tunda worked her way through the maze and quickly located the right tube. H o w e v e r, o n c e Tu n d a discovered she couldn't have the rat, her keen hunting instincts pulled her off to find something more interesting that might actually be catchable.

Our practice sessions were successful in that all the basenjis sniffed out the right tube. The instructors told us we needed to get more involved as it is quite acceptable to do all we can to encourage our dogs to tunnel and jump and even to call them to the rat tubes. Handlers can be very "hands-on" except they cannot actually point to the tube holding the rat. It is up to the handler to call out when the dog finds the rat. I found this a bit subjective as the dogs sniffed from tube to tube. The practice course provided that day was the same as the qualifying pattern for a Rat Instinct Test. Living in Texas and having horses most of my adult life, I had a fine appreciation for the cost and energy it takes to set up a Barn Hunt course, not to mention that not everyone is equipped to store 20 plus bales of hay and straw between events. Extra bales are always needed if one is “disqualified” during a trial. For example, one hike of a male dog’s leg will put a bale out of commission. 

It’s a timed event with 3 different height sizes. Teams can earn titles, placements, and championships. Requires hunting and teamwork skills. The purpose is for a dog to exhibit its hunting skill to detect vermin in a barn-like setting. Straw and hay bales are used to create tunnels and obstacles between the dog and the rat that is held safely in a tube. The dog must use its nose to find the rat. WHAT OTHER ORGANIZATIONS RECOGNIZE BARN HUNT ASSOCIATION LLC EARNED TITLES? •

AKC - http://akc.org In 2013 AKC partnered with BHA to recognize Barn Hunt titles. This titles become part of a dog's AKC record. The owner must submit an application and pay a fee to have these titles recorded. For an additional cost, AKC will issue a title certificate. ◊ Barn Hunt Events can be held in conjunction with AKC events providing they are held separate and apart from the AKC event to provide a clear demarcation between the two organizations. This is accomplished by one of two ways or even both: ◊ Hold at a different time such as after the AKC event is finished. ◊ Hold at a different location such as another area on the grounds of the AKC event.

Contribute to a Revised Perspective on Dog Domestication

ith the advent of three recently developed statistical modeling methods 1, Freedman, et.al. (2014)2, have offered a new interpretation of the origin of domestic dogs. They used seven high-quality genome sequences from: • Three living wolves (Figure 1) whose lines of descent represent the broad regions where dog domestication hypothetically took place (an Israeli Wolf from the Middle East, a Chinese Wolf from Southeast Asia, and a Croatian Wolf from Europe), • Two primitive dogs (basenji and dingo; Figure 1) whose ancestral lines represent the earliest examples of domestic dogs to characterize the branch/clade of the canine phylogenetic tree and who were selected because they “represent divergent lineages relative to the [domestic dog] Boxer genome and maximize the opportunity to capture distinct alleles present in the earliest dogs” (Freedman, et.al., 2014, p.2),

• A Boxer as a reference for modern dogs, and • A Golden Jackal as the comparison group to which all of the above are related through a common earlier ancestor, but who formed a separate ancestral group from dogs and wolves before any of them branched away from each other. A basenji and a dingo were selected to represent ancient dog lineages in the analysis because their geographic isolation in Africa and Australia respectively places them south of the natural range for all living wolf lineages (Figure 1), thereby reducing the likelihood

The combination of these three new modeling methods allowed the authors to reinterpret: 1) the size of the ancestral shared population at the time of the wolf/dog divergence; 2) the geographic origins and timing of dog domestication; 3) post-divergence inbreeding between dogs and wolves; 4) lineage-specific characteristics of the recently discovered dog-specific AMY2B expansion (a gene implicated in starch digestion).

Findings Prior to the onset of dog domestication, the wolf-dog ancestral population had substantially more genetic diversity than modern wolf populations. Dogs and wolves separated, each forming distinct clades, from that common ancestral population (Figure 2) approximately 15,000 years ago, indicating a single origin population prior to the adoption of widespread agriculture by humans. There are no representatives of the wolf-dog ancestral population today. The modern wolf is derived from wolf populations that diverged from the wolfdog ancestral population at about the same time as the earliest dogs. Their divergence corresponds with the late Pleistocene period of environmental change which could have impacted availability of prey species. In this study, the Basenji and the Dingo genome sequences showed considerably lower mean heterozygosity rates (meaning that they had less genetic variability or gene diversity) than any of the three wolf genomes. This finding suggested a dramatically reduced effective population size for dogs, compared with modern wolf populations. The Dingo’s (Figure 3) heterozygosity rate was about the same as most domestic dogs (Lindblad-Toh et. al., 2005), while the Basenji’s (Figure 4) rate was somewhat lower. Both dog and wolf populations experienced population bottlenecks after they separated. However, the bottleneck for dogs was severe, in the order of 1500% decrease in effective population size. Over the past 50,000 years, the Basenji effective population size dropped from an estimated 35,000 individuals at the divergence point to 1,640-1,980 individuals 4,000 years ago

Geographic origin of dog domestication could not be inferred but the study concluded that none of the modern wolves correspond to the location of the ancestral wolf-dog population because none of the sampled wolves is more closely related to domestic dogs than any of the others. The study

BASENJIS, DINGOES, AND WOLVES Contribute to a Revised Perspective on Dog Domestication of the domestication process, facilitating the ability of dogs to feed on agricultural garbage around human agrarian settlements (Figure 6). However, the current study found that the AMY2B gene had not reached 100% frequency / spread through the early dog population. In fact, all of the wolves in the study, the Dingo, and the Siberian Husky (historically associated with nomadic hunter gatherers of the Artic) had low frequencies of genes for processing starches, while the basenji and other breeds with histories of long association with humans in agrarian societies had higher numbers of starch-processing genes. Based on this evidence, the study concludes it is likely that domestication of dogs occurred prior to the adoption of agriculture by humans. 

found evidence that dogs diverged from the ancestral wolf-dog population at approximately the same time the three wolf populations diverged from each other. Therefore, domestic dogs and modern wolves evolved from a now-extinct, common ancestral population, supporting the theory that dogs and wolves are in fact “sister clades” (Figure 5). Comparing the seven genome sequences for evidence of inbreeding between dogs and wolves, the study noted significant evidence of admixture between (a) the Israeli Wolf and the Basenji, (b) the Chinese wolf and the dingo, (c) the Israeli Wolf and the Boxer. Since basenjis are geographically isolated from any modern wolf populations, the authors believe this is a result of gene flow between a population ancestral to basenjis and Boxers that inbred with a population ancestral to Israeli wolves in western Eurasia. Findings from an earlier study (Axelsson et.al., 2013) were interpreted to suggest that the AMY2B gene (implicated in starch digestion) rapidly increased in the earliest dog populations and that this was a critical part

I recently fielded a call from a non-basenji breeder who anxiously told me that a disgruntled puppy buyer verbally threatened her with the prospect of prosecution under the “Puppy Lemon Law” of the buyer’s state of residence. As the New Year rolls in, let’s revisit what Puppy Lemon Laws really are, what they do, and most importantly – what they don’t do! Let’s Start at the Very Beginning:

The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), adopted by all 50 states of the US, although with variations, covers the sale of goods – and goods are defined to include the sale of adult dogs and puppies. All contracts for the sale of dogs and puppies fall under Article 2 of the UCC, whether the agreements are written or oral. Because the UCC was created primarily to deal the sale of inanimate objects, the typical UCC remedies for breach of contract are

•

The buyer must return the “non-conforming goods” to the seller, and receives a refund of the purchase price (and certain other out of pocket costs); or

•

The buyer retains the defective goods but may recover the difference between the purchase price of the goods and the actual value of the goods in question, given their “non-conformity.”

As the purchase and sale of companion animals at retail increased, state legislatures perceived that Article 2 remedies, crafted with moldy grain and broken factory widgets in mind, failed to provide adequate relief to purchasers of companion animals that were ill or had congenital health defects. Many companion dog owners did not want to return their pup to

the breeder/seller – but would also stand to recover very little if the gauge of their loss was the difference between the intrinsic value of a perfectly healthy companion versus a less-than-healthy one. This disparity led to the creation of special consumer protection laws (aka “Puppy Lemon Laws”) covering the sale of companion animals. In most instances, these laws are aimed at retail sales outlets that sell puppies. However, there is sufficient wiggle room in the laws (at least potentially) to encompass hobby breeders as well.

What Lemon Laws Cover: As of May, 2013, twenty-one states have Puppy Lemon Laws.1 Generally, the laws set out: (i) A time frame during which a purchaser must report an illness under the Lemon Law, (ii) The maximum amount a buyer can recover from the seller, (iii) Whether veterinary bills may be reimbursed as part of the recovery, (iv) Disclosure requirements the seller must adhere to, and (in fourteen of the twenty-one states), (v) A separate provision covering reports of congenital defects like hip dysplasia, or slipping patellas. Typical time frames for reporting illnesses range from as little as seven days after the buyer takes possession of the pup to as long as 20 days. In other words, the primary focus of Puppy Lemon Laws is the very short time frame after buyers take a puppy home. States that include congenital defects in their Lemon Laws require conditions to be reported within time frames as short as sixty days, and up to two years (Rhode Island.) Although there are variations by state, the information a seller is required to provide to a buyer is standard issue fare: description of the dog, breed, sex, color, contact information for the breeder, AKC registration information, if applicable, and any health records (inoculations, worming, etc.) the seller has relating to the pup. Lemon Law Take Aways: Most well-written breeder contracts contain terms and conditions that are far more generous to buyers than any state Puppy Lemon Law. If you have a contract with your buyer, and if that contract is valid and enforceable, that contract is very likely – in almost all instances - to control every term and condition of your agreement. In short, Lemon Laws pose no threat to most responsible hobby breeders. Lemon Laws are very limited purpose pieces of legislation intended to give the “hapless buying public” something to fall back on when they’ve paid a pet shop $1500 for a pup that turns up with worms, an upper respiratory infection, or other health problems very shortly after purchase. If you live in a Puppy Lemon Law state, by all means know what that law requires. Chances are that all of those buyer protections and more are already right there in your agreement. Just remember that at the end of the day, Lemon Laws are intended as safety nets for those who purchase a puppy at retail, without the benefit of a typical breeder contract. A buyer with a breeder contract who attempts to brandish a Lemon Law as a sword rather than a shield probably fails to realize just how dull that blade is! h

I did discover a strange fact...my mom does not use the same words as other people in the class. I questioned that and mom said because most people use the same words all the time, when I get into the ring situation she did not want me answering to someone else’s command. I pondered that for a while and decided that maybe she was actually right for once?? Anyway classes were lots of fun. I learned many new things that really are not as hard as I thought they might be. However... that crazy thing they call a dumb bell is not one of my favorite exercises, but I am working on it, really I am. The thing that really tripped me up was a “fun match.” Why they call it fun is beyond me. There were just so many other dogs and people there that my attention span became very ,very short, almost nonexistent!! On the recall I looked away and when I looked back, mom was all the way across the room. I did not panic but I started for mom before she called me. WRONG move. She met me half way across the room, promptly turned me around, and told me to wait. This time I did not take my eyes off mom and when she called me I promptly trotted up into a perfect front as she calls it and even finished almost perfect. But on the long sit I laid down (after all I had been there for a long time, I think) because I wanted to rest. WRONG move. Here come mom and made me sit up again. This time, so I wouldn’t be embarrassed any more, I decided to mind my mom and pay closer attention. Sometime soon I understand, there is going to be another one of those “fun” things and I want mom to be very proud of me. I did hear a rumor that mom wanted to take me to the National (whatever that is) but decided my attention span was too short and it was too far away. Next year watch for me in the obedience ring. I would like to add my name to that elite group.

I spun around and there stood Buster, that pesky Siamese, who challenges me at every turn, I told him yes, I was going to be the matriarch of the dogs and cats that live here. He said, “Oh no, I am going rule.” Well, we really had words. Being the lady I am I did not make any noise, but he hissed and swung out a clawed foot that just missed my nose and that was the final straw. I approached him and was not too ladylike when I informed him that I was matriarch period. No further words about it because what I say goes. Needless to say, I won. On one of my walks I met Zoey who lives down the street. She looks so much like Cinder that I had to do a double take. She is past the puppy stage but still likes to play. I do not play very well on a leash so had to decline the invitation to play. She smiled (yes, she actually smiles showing a lot of teeth) and said that was OK for now. I actually met part of the mouse patrol. Her name is Betty. She looked at me and her eyes became very large and she said, “You are black just like me.” I think because I am black she must have thought I was a very big black cat. She brushed against both my shoulders, we touched noses, and she went back on duty (mouse patrol that is) and said until next time. Next time? Really weird weather here, cold, then hot, then rain, then hot and more rain. The good news is that I am now shiny black; my entire winter coat is gone. Mom says it looks as if I have a new coat. My teacher remarked how pretty I looked. The hottest month we have off, either they don’t want to teach as it is too hot or they are off to shows. I hope I can be off to shows someday. Until next time may all your days be happy and carefree and all your trails an adventure. I know it is always an adventure for me when I walk out the front door with mom.

Recently it was announced in the news that it was the 25th anniversary of the explosion that blew flight Pan Am 103 out of the air over Lockebie, Scotland killing all on board. Many were affected directly, and many more indirectly by this event. It stirred memories for me.

wenty-five years ago I received a phone call from a man in Arkansas inquiring about a basenji puppy. This was a very strange call as I could not figure out what was going on with the caller. One minute he seemed rational and the next I wondered if he was drunk or insane. He switched back and forth from one mood to the other. I tried to answer his questions but later in the conversation he would ask the same questions again. Finally, he thanked me and hung up. I pondered the call for a while and decided to just forget it. The next day he called again and was no more coherent than the day before. Several times I was tempted to hang up but something kept me on the line. He called every day after that and slowly I learned what was driving this man. He was in the depths of despair; his only son had been on Pan Am Flight 103. The distraction of a basenji puppy was just what he felt he needed, and I had a litter on the ground. Arrangements for shipping were made as soon as the pup was old enough. Calls made after the puppy’s arrival were more upbeat. I wish the story ended there, but it did not. About a year later I received a discouraging call; his basenji had been killed. He just didn’t understand it. The dog had never gone off the block before; he just visited with the neighbors and came back home. I was shocked into silence. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I couldn’t begin to count the times I had explained how basenjis needed to have a secure fence and should NEVER be allowed to run loose. He had agreed with me at the time, even told me he would build a fence. I was sure he understood. When I recovered my voice, I asked why the basenji wasn’t kept in the fenced yard. He answered that they just hadn’t gotten around to fencing the yard yet. As if this wasn’t bad enough, he wanted another basenji.

I had just bred a bitch but was not sure if she was in whelp or not. I told him this, thinking it left me a way out for not promising him another puppy. I was in turmoil, feeling bad for this depressed man but feeling worse for the basenji – and feeling it was all my fault. He called again two days later to tell me that the fencing people had arrived earlier that day and were busy installing the fence. I explained again how to make the fencing basenji escape-proof, and after a few more calls I reluctantly promised him another puppy. When the puppy was old enough to go to his new home the man told me he and his wife were planning a trip to visit the son’s girl friend and her family in Tennessee. I had entered some outdoor shows in Tennessee at the same time as his visit and we arranged to meet at one of the shows. Finally I was able to put a face to the voice I had heard so often. He, his wife, the girl friend and her parents all came to the show. We had time to get acquainted; all were wonderful people. As we watched the puppy run around in the ex-pen, the man told me that if he had not had this to look forward to he could not have made it through the past few months. He had tears in his eyes and clutched the puppy to his chest as they walked away. I heard from him after they got home. The puppy was fine, and they were enjoying him a lot. After that the calls were shorter, further apart and were much more upbeat. The healing was progressing. Sometimes we forget just how great the contributions of our four-legged psychiatrists are to humans. Basenjis have a far greater purpose in our lives than just winning ribbons and earning titles. Too bad we don’t have a way of honoring their greatest achievements.

HEARTWORM Most of us recognize that heartworm infection is one of the major health issues in canines. The intent of this article is to provide an overview of this continually growing problem. The most detailed information can be found on the American Heartworm Society website (www.heartwormsociety. org.) The more you know, the better prepared you will be to make the right decisions for your dogs. By Wanda Pooley HISTORY

hile awareness of heartworm infection in the US has escalated in the past half-century, this disease has a long history. Canine heartworm was first discovered in Italy in 1626, but the first reported case in the US wasn’t until over two hundred years later in 1847. The same parasite was discovered in cats in the 1920’s and in 1952 the first case of human infection of Dirofilaria immitis was documented in the United States. Going back even farther in time, in 1586, Chez Iean Wolfe sketched a “monster’ found in the heart of a horse that was later identified as D. immitis. Heartworm became a growing problem for dog owners. In the mid-1970’s the American Heartworm Society was formed to further research and promote procedures for the diagnosis, treatment ,and prevention of this parasite. Since the formation of AHS, great strides have been made towards the attainment of those goals. In more recent years, heartworm has spread to areas previously considered no or low risk. Moreover, the average number of reported cases per vet clinic has risen in the past decade. If people are giving their dogs preventative agents, why is this? The answer may be found in the fact that

worldwide changes have occurred during the past thirty years.

WHAT HAS CHANGED? In order for heartworm to be endemic in an area, three factors must exist. 1. A reservoir for the infection. Domestic dogs or wild canids already infected have been relocated to areas previously free of heartworms. This gradual migration can occur through the dog next door to the dog on the next block and then to the next town and eventually the next state. A heartworm positive dog might be relocated by its family or a test-postive rescue dog transported across the country. It is likely the urban areas incur a higher risk of infection simply because the dog population is much higher than in rural communities. A natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina caused 250,000 pets, many of them already infected with heartworms, to be relocated throughout the country, effectively broadening the reservoir for the infection. 2. A competent mosquito vector. More than 70 species of mosquitoes are capable of transmitting heartworms. Of these, 22 species are considered the most significant. Worse yet is that these species also migrate. Consider the desertlike areas of the western US that have been developed

HEARTWORM (continued) through the use of irrigation. These regions can now support the Aedes sierrensis, a known transmitter of heartworm. 3. Favorable climate conditions. In the past, the northern states were considered safe throughout the winter months. However, as the suburbs continue to be developed, “heat islands” are being created. For example, large shopping centers and parking lots actually make small areas conducive to mosquito survival throughout the winter.

ANTIGEN TESTS: When screening the general population of dogs or verifying a heartworm infection, antigen tests are considered the most

sensitive diagnostic means of detecting adult female worm infections. No verified test capable of detecting adult male worms is yet available. FREQUENCY OF TESTING Annually if resuming preventative treatment; prior to changing brand or type of heartworm preventative; or retesting due to a false-negative result. A positive test indicates a pre-existing infection.

A QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE LIFE CYCLE: The life cycle of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is fairly long -- about 7-9 months. When a vector, in this case a mosquito, feeds on a host (a dog, for example) the microfilariae (larvae) infect that mosquito. Once inside the mosquito, it takes 10-14 days for the larvae to reach the infective 3rd stage (L3.) At that point the mosquito then feeds on another animal and deposits that infected larvae in the bite puncture, thereby infecting it with the heartworm microfilariae. The molt from L3 to L4 begins as early as day 3 and ends as late as day 9 to 12. L4 molt to the final stage somewhere between day 50 to 70. While worms can reach the pulmonary vasculature (lungs) as early as day 67, all have arrived by day 90 to 120. The first worms that reach the lungs are 1 to 1.5 inches in length. After that the female worms increase in length by almost tenfold. They become sexually mature about day 120 post infection. It is interesting to note that the location and growth of the worms as they progress to the heart is related to the size of the dog. Dogs have microfilariae circulating in their blood as early as 6 months but usually by 7 to 9 months post infection.

TESTING - WHAT MIGHT BE FOUND IN THE BLOOD? The currently available heartworm tests detect protein that has been secreted by the adult female. The earliest that heartworm antigen and microfilariae can be detected is about 5 and 6 months post infection, respectively. Antigen levels in a dog with a very

According to the American Heartworm Society “False-negative test results occur most commonly when infections are light, female worms are still immature, only male worms are present, and/or the test kit instructions have not been followed; therefore, heartworm test results are either positive or below detectable limits (BDL) and should NEVER be recorded as “negative.” MICROFILARIA TESTING Microfilaria testing is usually done in tandem with antigen testing to determine whether this life-cycle stage is also present in dogs that are antigenemic. Because less than 1% of infections are patent - direct evidence of the organism - but not antigenemic, using the microfilariae test alone is not recommended.

HEARTWORM PREVENTION The heartworm preventives available today - ivermectin, milbemycin oxime, moxidectin and selamectin - should be given monthly to effectively kill L3 and L4 stage microfilariae, and in some cases, through continuous use of these preventatives, young adult heartworms. Before a dog is started on any heartworm preventative, do a primary diagnostic screening first to determine if the dog has a pre-existing condition.

This should be rigidly enforced, especially during the first four weeks after the first injection of melarsomine. This restriction of exercise will minimize the risk of cardiopulmonary complications. It is especially important to note that no herbal therapies have been proven to reduce the incidence of heartworm or be effective as a treatment.

Inappropriate use, such as the use of MLs alone (the “slow-kill” method) to treat heartworm-positive dogs and the off-label use of largeanimal products as heartworm preventives, can contribute to the development of resistant strains.

By following label recommendations for the use of these products, and monitoring patients appropriately, veterinarians can play a vital role in maintaining the effectiveness of ML medications.

BIS Hall of Fame honors all the basenjis that have won Best in Show in the United States since the breed was accepted for competition at AKC shows through December 31, 2013 Any basenji that wins such an honor has earned the right to be on this list because each dog listed is a representative of the breed. It’s not about who is at the other end of the lead; it’s about the dog and our breed, and how each dog is valued and appreciated not only among the basenji fancy but by the fancy as a whole. The first basenji to go Best in Show in the United States was a bitch, CH Dainty Dancer of Glenairly in 1958. She was followed by two more bitches, CH Lepper’s Nik Nak and CH Lutes Mona Lisa. It wasn’t until 1968 that the first male basenji earned this honor - CH Betsy Ross’ Kingola of Ber-Vic. A keen eye will spot that Philo’s Blaze of Koko Crater won a Best in Show in Hawaii in 1956 and may wonder why he isn’t recognized as the first basenji in the United States to win Best in Show. History was against him, one might say. Hawaii was a territory at that time -- a territory that was admitted into the Union on August 21, 1959 as the 50th state. Title Dog Name

Best in Show wins from 1998 through 2013

Initially compiled by Jennie Behles, Simone Mullins, Cheryl Myers Egerton & Margaret Robertson The very first basenji star, MBIS AmCan Ch Dainty Dancer, of Glenairly, was the first basenji to show and win at the Westminster Kennel Club, and also the first Canadian basenji to win a Best in Show both in Canada and the United States. Following Dancer’s appearance on the scene, there was a long gap in Canadian basenji Best in Show history before the Canadian Kennel Club began compiling statistics through an outside contractor. These were compiled for the years 1988 through 2004. Following this, the stats have been compiled on an annual basis either by the Canadian Kennel Club and published in Dogs in Canada magazine, or more recently, compiled by the Best Dog in Canada. Many of the dogs shown below also competed in the United States and were top ranked basenjis in that country. Many have Best in Shows in other countries as well as Canada, but the chart reflects only Canadian efforts. The increased wins indicate the increased popularity of the basenji in the show ring in recent years. This seems to have a direct correlation with the improvement of basenji “charm” and temperament.
