THE GOOD NEWS

IN

April and May, I traveled to a world class facility sprawling over more than 600 acres, the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry, Georgia, for two 4-day clusters. The Peach Blossom Cluster, held in April, drew a huge entry with a schedule packed with so many activities, it was difficult to keep track of everything - many specialties, seminars, CAT tests, AKC JC and QC tests, agility and herding trials, Canine Good Citizen test, health clinics, and demonstrations in addition to four days of all-breed competitions. And if you were really adventurous, you could get a very early start to take in a hot air balloon ride. One early morning while walking dogs, I watched a long line of colorful balloons quietly drift by the hotel. In May, another cluster, Crossroads of Georgia, was a scaled down version of the April shows -- fewer entries and activities. After being overwhelmed by the April cluster, this show was actually more peaceful with plenty of room to spread out. One addition was a dog carting seminar with a competition course available for people to use. The smaller size of this cluster made it possible to offer the AKC Sanctioned Beginner Puppy Competition on three of the four days. On the Saturday puppy competition, the judge was surprised to see so many basenjis in his ring. He exclaimed, “Is there a basenji specialty going on?” Both show clusters were great, with the company even better. Dinner with good friends every night to tell war stories about past shows and dogs is hard to top. If you feel like a drive to Georgia to show dogs, this show site is spectacular, even worthy of a national specialty because everything could be done in one spot, and numerous hotels are only a mile away.

THE BAD NEWS As I worked my way across the country from south central Texas to those shows in Perry, Georgia, I couldn’t help but wonder, “What’s wrong with this picture?” Granted, I do live in what some people would describe as “the middle of nowhere Texas,” but still, why does one have to drive 1100 miles to find an entry of basenjis in this country? Where did all the dogs go? Back in the day, Texas was a pretty competitive state with ample breeders to keep the exhibits coming. Now we are lucky if we can gather enough dogss amongst ourselves to make a 3-point major. Even more startling is that it takes just a very few of each sex to meet that requirement.

When I first started showing basenjis, primarily in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin - the heartland of the country - it took 8 dogs and 9 bitches to make a 3-pt major. The area had many good breeders who brought their best to the shows, making competition very keen. Now the requisite number of basenjis has plummeted by almost half -- down to a mere 4 dogs and 5 bitches. Even taking into account the newly designed points model AKC now uses, those who show basenjis with any regularity have to be cognizant of the fact that our game is shrinking. I don’t have any solutions for how to increase the numbers, to encourage more people to get involved in the sport of dogs, to pull more breeders into the fold, but clearly, those of us who are reaching geriatric status cannot continue to cover the ever-expanding gap between the population of basenjis and the exhibits in competition. 

M

any scientific publications are readily available that already cover abundant research to support the genetic transmission of autoimmune thyroiditis, and I encourage all breeders to acquaint themselves with as much information as possible about this disease before adding dogs to their breeding programs. The intent of this article, however, is to describe a complete baseline thyroid profile or more simply put, explain just what the heck all those letters and numbers mean. While hypothryoidism is not life-threatening and is easily managed, we, as breeders, should do all we can with the tools available to assess the health of every dog we use, or plan to use, to create the next generation of basenjis. The thyroid gland is critical because it controls the rate of metabolism for almost all body cells in dogs. Hence, when this gland begins to fail, many different body systems can be affected. Taking that fact into account, this makes hypothyroidism the number one endocrine problem in canines because the major percentage of reported cases result in inheritable autoimmune thyroiditis (positive TgAA.) The remaining reported cases of hypothyroidism are diagnosed as idiopathic (without apparent cause and TgAA negative). Yet, according to Michigan State University, some data have shown that this idiopathic hypothyroidism can be the end stage of autoimmune thyroid disease. What is more problematic is that the classical symptoms we expect to see in dogs appear only after 70 percent or more of the gland is damaged. Since hypothryoidism presents a wide range of clinical signs, many that are subtle and may mimic other causes, it can be difficult to diagnose. Breeders are faced with a dilemma because dogs may not

express clinical symptoms until after 3 to 5 years of age and by then it's likely most of these dogs are well into a show career or being used in a breeding program. For a long time breeders had limited options for testing for autoimmune hypothyroidism. Vets could test the T3 and T4 thyroid levels, but the complete baseline thyroid profile was still some years away. It wasn't until 1997 that the AKC Parent Club Survey revealed that hypothyroidism was the top concern for breeders, which prompted some progressive changes in how the thyroid was evaluated. "In June of 1998, the Michigan State University Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory began running the TgAA assay as part of routine thyroid function testing, making it possible to detect autoimmune thyroid disease long before complete thyroid atrophy and clinical hypothyroidism (when clinical signs are present) occurred. Of course, most of the samples were from dogs with at least one clinical sign suggestive of hypothyroidism.1"

THE BASELINE THYROID PROFILE A complete baseline thyroid profile typically includes TgAA, total T4, total T3, free T4, free T3, T3AA and T4AA, and cTSH. The TgAA portion of any thyroid profile is most important during the first five years of a dog's life as few dogs are found to have idiopathic hypothyroidism before this age.1 Depending on your vet, you may discover there are a variety of testing profiles available. The chart on page 9 will help you understand the basics of what tests are most beneficial for your breeding program.

DECIPHERING THE PANEL (continued)

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THYROID VALUES Be sure to use a lab that will provide actual values rather than the more vague LOW, NORMAL, or HIGH results. “What if normal is up to 200 autoantibodies and your dog has 201?” Dr. W. Jean Dodds asks. “You need to know that number.2” Dogs are individuals which means these values should be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Moreover, the values can change significantly as the dog ages, or if it has had a serious health problem, or recently received vaccinations such as rabies. Intact bitches should be tested only during anestrus -- that "resting" period between heat cycles -otherwise their resulting lab values can be skewed. Dr. W. Jean Dobbs offers some caution about the OFA ranges of values: “Remember that the OFA ranges are based on the average pet, who’s a couch potato and doesn’t do much more than walk around the yard,” she says. “When you’ve got breeding stock that’s going to perform, they’re quasi-athletes and they’ve got to be different in terms of the lab values they produce. For example, in the case of a Ridgeback who lure-courses every weekend, “his thyroid’s going to be wiped out” and along with it his FT4D reserve in his bloodstream,” Dr. Dodds says. "And some breeds, especially sighthounds, have low FT4D values to begin with.2" It is also important to understand that the OFA Thyroid panel looks at only three values: TgAA, Free T4 by dialysis (FT4D,) and TSH. Other values from a full thyroid panel – including total T4, T3 and T4 autoantibodies – are ignored.

What does T4 and T3 really mean?

T

he sole purpose of the thyroid gland is to convert the iodine consumed in the diet into two thyroid hormones -- T4 and T3. When thyroid hormones become abnormal, many, if not all body systems are also affected. Thyroid glands that are not functioning properly compromise the immune system leaving the dog susceptible to all types of illness.

T

he thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone in a mechanism by which it combines the element iodine with the amino acid tyrosine. In this process, one or two iodine molecules attach to a tyrosine molecule to form iodinated tyrosines (iodotyrosines). Compounds containing one iodine or two iodine molecules then combine with one another in a process known as coupling to form the primary thyroid hormones, T4 (tetraiodothyronine or thyroxine with 4 iodine molecules) and T3 (triiodothyronine with 3 iodine molecules).

N

ormally, the thyroid gland secretes an abundance of T4 along with smaller amounts of T3 and even smaller amounts of tyrosine, T1 and T2. When T4 reacts with the cells that comprise the body’s organs, including the pituitary, liver, brain, and skeletal muscle, it loses an iodine atom to become T3. The majority of T3 found in the blood circulation is formed by this peripheral (away from the thyroid gland) conversion of T4 to T3. T3 is approximately 10 times more potent than T4, although both T4 and T3 serve vital functions. And consequently most of the T3 found in the blood is produced from peripheral conversion of T4 into T3. REFERENCE: Thyroid Function in the Canine, NaturalCanines.com

DECIPHERING THE PANEL (continued)

OVERVIEW OF THE BASELINE THYROID PROFILE TgAA* (Thyroglobulin Autoantibodies)

Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid gland. In autoimmune-mediated hypothyroidism, also called autoimmune thyroiditis, which is the inheritable kind, the dog begins to develop a high number of Thyroglobulin Autoantibodies (TgAA), which seek out and kill the thyroid gland. TgAA is a very important screening test as dogs that test positive should not be used in a breeding program. This antibody level is measured in the TgAA value. High TgAAs can signal hypothyroidism. However, false positive results can occur if a dog has been recently vaccinated. *According to research done at Michigan State University, while TgAA can detect thyroid disease years before clinical symptoms appear, this test can be less relevant in older dogs because once the thyroid gland is destroyed, the dog will test negative as there is no longer a stimulus for TgAA production. T4 and TSH then become more important indicators1.

Total T4 (tetraiodothyronine with 4 iodine molecules)

By itself, Total T4 values are unreliable for diagnosing thyroiditis. It is greatly influenced by non-thyroid illnesses and drugs such as steroids and anti-inflammatory medications. Vets are more likely to use this as a screening test to indicate if a full thyroid panel should to be done.

Free (unbound) T4

Done as a single test, free T4 measurement is likely to be the most sensitive and more accurate NOTE: Free T4 by dialysis should in diagnosing hypothyroidism in dogs. This value measures the amount of biologically active thyroxine (< 0.1 percent) circulating in the bloodstream and available (or free) for the body to not be confused with total T4 which represents all the thyroid use. A decreased free T4 supports the diagnosis of hypothyroidism; a normal free T4 indicates the dog is likely euthyroid (normal.) hormone in the dog’s body and can fluctuate significantly. Total As the autoantibodies destroy the thyroid, the level of FT4 begins to drop, because the T4 values can be depressed damaged thyroid cannot produce an adequate amount of hormone. So low FT4 values can depending on the dog’s stress signal hypothyroidism. level, hormones and/or drugs. A dog with a significant nonthyroid illness (NTI) can also have a low free T4. Drugs, such as anticonvulsants and steroids, can affect the values. It is recommended to retest for hypothryoidism once the NTI has been resolved. While the equilibrium dialysis (ED) radioimmunoassy (RIA) method is common for measuring freeT4, newer technologies, such as solid-phase RIA and time-resolved fluoroimmunoassy, offer alternative, accurate methodology that are faster and less expensive. Total T3 (triiodothyronine with 3 iodine molecules)

As a single test this is not recommended as a good measurement for diagnosis, but is useful as part of a full thyroid panel

Free (unbound) T3

Like the free T4, free T3 represents the biologically active fraction of total T3.

T3AA & T4AA (auto-antibodies)

Essentially, all cases of autoimmune thyroiditis should have elevated TgAA in their serum, but only about 20% have elevated serum T3 and/or T4 AA. The presence of elevated T3AA and/or T4AA helps to confirm a diagnosis of autoimmune thyroiditis. However, negative (or nonelevated) levels do not rule out thyroiditis

TSH

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) The pituitary output of thyroid hormone rises as the free T4 levels fall. While in humans, 95 percent of the thyroid hormone regulation is controlled by TSH, only 70 percent of thyroid hormone regulation is controlled by TSH in canines with the other 30 percent controlled by growth hormone. Hence, this test is considered to be a poor predictor of hypothyroidism.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE...

Photography by Sirius

T

hose of us that have enjoyed the sport of lure coursing for some time have seen our share of “creative coursers.” One trick that some experienced hounds develop is “lying in wait” by the string to pounce on the lure. Basenjis are particularly fond of this game, but I remember a little red and white basenji bitch that gave new meaning to the word “ambush.” She had recently weaned a litter and was slightly dragging underneath, not quite back to her usual peak condition. She started out strongly with her running mates over the slightly rolling, sandy course. Being a typical, always thinking basenji she apparently decided there was an easier way to "get the bunny." She stopped running and trotted to the top of the highest rise of ground. From there she surveyed the situation and decided where the

“bunny” would return. She dashed off the knoll to a spot next to the line where there was a small sparse bush growing and crouched down behind it. As she peered out, watching the lure, she apparently realized that the bush was not big enough to hide her. She leaped to her feet and started digging frantically. Sand flew for a few seconds and then she settled down into the newly made depression behind the bush to await the approaching “bunny.” After the course was over a photographer and a couple of judges were still rolling on the ground with laughter. While the incident was, to say the least, amusing to those close enough to witness it, it didn't help the bitch's score one bit. Over the years, hounds have done some pretty spectacular things on the coursing field for which they could not be given credit. What a pity that the scoring method gives points only on technical merit and none for artistic impression. h

om Cross, TuTu Basenjis of Wagoner, Oklahoma, passed away suddenly on March 14, 2014. When Kathy Boyd called to tell me about Tom’s death, it literally took my breath away for a bit. Tom and his wife, Elda, were married for 56 years. These two people were inseparable; if you found Tom, Elda was usually standing right next to him. For those of you who may not have known Tom, in the Basenji World, he was best known for Tutu Basenjis. Tom and Elda Rae began their involvement in basenjis back in 1965 when they purchased a bitch named Cambria’s Tamatake. One only needs to query Sally Wallis’ database to read the long list of Tutu basenjis that are attributed to the success of Tutu Basenjis. Tom was one of the founding members of the original Indian Nations Basenji Club. After those early beginnings he was always closely involved with that club serving in many capacities as either an officer or a board member. He was serving as president of the club at the time of his

death. Tom, along with Elda, attended almost every BCOA national specialty. Tom was my “go to” guy for many things. For example, if it hadn’t been for Tom, a few times I would have been up the proverbial creek without a paddle while trying to set up my RV at a campsite. He could come up with just that missing fixture I would need for that odd hookup. Probably most of what I learned about motorhomes, I learned from Tom. Of course, that also meant I had to endure a lot of teasing if I did something dumb. Tom was my favorite guy to banter back and forth. His stern sounding voice was always accompanied by a twinkle in his eye. We could tell each other the silliest stories in the most serious tones. I was blessed to have been counted as one of Tom’s good friends. Tom is missed by his large, wonderful family, all of his friends, and the Basenji World, which has lost yet another good member who dedicated many, many years to the breed. 

AKC and UKC The

B-LEGAL Blog

Competing or Co-existing? As a Board member of the newly formed United Kennel Club (UKC) American Basenji Club, I have been asked many times why I want to belong to a club or participate in events that are “in competition” with the American Kennel Club (AKC). The goal of this blog is hopefully to dispel the “competition” myth by providing basic facts about the origins, history, and operations of UKC and AKC.1

UKC By Karla Schreiber, Esq.

is the second oldest all-breed registry of purebred dogs in the United States (second to AKC, of course) and the second largest all-breed purebred registry in the world, recording close to 250,000 registrations annually. It was founded in 1898 to provide a registry explicitly for “working dogs” – in contrast to AKC’s emphasis (at that time) on conformation events. UKC promoted, and still promotes, the idea of the “total dog” (basenji fanciers should be immediately reminded of our breed’s “All Around Hound” designation!) that combines working ability, intelligence, a companionable disposition, and conformation suited to each breeds’ purpose. While the UKC’s early focus was on field trial and hunting events, over the years it expanded its offerings to include conformation, obedience, agility, lure coursing, dock diving, weight pulling, and a myriad of other events for purebred fanciers and mixed breed owners. 1

Background material for this blog was taken from www.akc.org and www.ukcdogs.com. *

The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 15

B-LEGAL BLOG (Continued) UKC has never touted itself as a historical registry for purebred dogs in the same manner as AKC. Instead, UKC’s focus has been on registering individual dogs (although litters with two UKC registered parents may be registered with UKC) Today, four of the top five breeds registered with UKC still evidence its pragmatic hunting/field/working dog roots: Treeing Walker Coonhound, Blue Tick Coonhound, English Coonhound and Black & Tan Coonhound. The UKC was founded as, and remains, a for-profit organization. AKC – as we know it today – was founded in 1884 by a group of 13 purebred single-breed clubs -- 10 American clubs and 3 Canadian clubs -- dedicated to “advancing the study, breeding, exhibiting, running and maintenance of purity of thoroughbred dogs.” However, in 1886, disputes developed between the American and Canadian groups, and the Canadians departed to form the Canadian Kennel Club. In 1909, AKC moved its offices to New York City, and incorporated as a not-for-profit entity. Although the initial focus of the AKC was on conformation shows and judging dogs based on written Breed Standards rather than performance, it branched out relatively quickly to include obedience, field, and agility events. The AKC maintains a more public profile than UKC, primarily due (in recent memory) to televised AKCsponsored events such as the Westminster Dog Show, viewed by millions annually around the globe. What is fascinating about the history of the UKC and AKC is that both organizations (while, for all intents and purposes, equally “old”) started with different focal points – but gradually moved toward a centerline. UKC still promotes its “total dog” concept and rewards performance, but also hosts conformation events where dogs are judged on conformity to a written Standard. AKC, on the other hand, started out with a focus on conformity to a written Standard, and has slowly but surely added competitive event after competitive event to reward performance. Both entities now host annual “top tier” events that include conformation and performance – the Eukanuba Classic and Westminster for AKC, and Premier and Gateway for UKC. At this time, the AKC and UKC host many similar events – from conformation shows, to agility, to field trials, to lure coursing. The rules and focus are slightly different in each venue, and those differences still reflect the early history and choices of each organization. However, after more than 100 years of relatively peaceful co-existence, it is impossible to say that UKC and AKC are “in competition” with one another. Clearly, each entity is an established “player” in the purebred dog world and contributes something of value. While there are fanciers

and owners who only “play” in one venue or the other – there are more and more fanciers dabbling in both. I think that for many who take the time to explore UKC as well as AKC events, there is no either/or choice. The events offer sufficient differences to make each worthwhile. Perhaps what is most important is that both AKC and UKC have, for over a century, each stood squarely in the corner of the purebred dog owner. In this day and age, I have to ask a hypothetical question: “Can we have too much support?” Far from offering either/or choices, UKC and AKC offer MORE options for purebred dogs and their owners to enjoy bonding with one another while participating in events that are enriching for dogs and owners. Both organizations support the rights of purebred dog owners and breeders. I’ll ask that hypothetical question again…. “Can we have too much support?” What attracts one person to the world of purebred dog ownership may not attract another. There is power, and hopefully longevity, in having more rather than fewer choices.h The B-Legal Blog provides general information on law-related topics for informational purposes only. Richard, STILWELL BASENJIS, was born Dec. 17, 1943, in Independence, Kansas. He graduated from Cameron University and then went on to work as a Senior Design Draftsman Illustrator for Manufactured Housing. Richard was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and a charter member of New Hope Baptist Church. Richard is survived by his wife, Linda; a brother, Roger Stilwell of Ringling, OK; an aunt, Nona Wyche of Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was a member of the Dallas-Fort Worth Basenji Club and a BCOA member since 1989. He was very active in the sport of lure coursing. By the mid-90’s Richard served as a judge at all-breed ASFA field trials. In 2001 Richard was approved to judge allbreed AKC lure coursing trials and tests, and in 2011 he was granted status by AKC to judge their newest testing event, Coursing Ability Test (CAT.) NOTES FROM FRIENDS ~

I am so sorry, Linda. I remember lots of wonderful times lure coursing with you and Richard. Even the times when it was pouring rain and the line kept breaking were memorable. My basenji, Arrow, came from you and Richard. Arrow is still going at 15 and a half years. Thanks for letting him live with me. Many prayers going out to you. ~

Michael Swan, Ooltewah, OH

I remember when you and Richard held lure coursing practice and basenji meetings at your home.....even a puppy match. I have fond memories of Richard on the lure coursing field and sitting ringside supporting you. My deepest sympathies to you and your family on your loss. I pray that your memories sustain you during this rough period.

Like A ROLLING

STONE By Karla Schreiber

CANINE BLADDER STONES 101 On the simplest level, canine bladder stones form when a substance in the urine that should be excreted in liquid form fails to break down, and instead forms crystals or grit (think of very fine sand) that over time precipitates into stones. Stones can vary in size from extremely small to the size of a nickel, or even larger, and the composition of any stone cannot be diagnosed by physical examination.

I

need to preface this article by stating the obvious: I’m not a vet. What I am – although I certainly never planned to be – is the owner and breeder of two male basenjis diagnosed with two different types of canine bladder stones (also called “uroliths.”) When my boy Ninja suffered a complete urinary tract blockage from cystine bladder stones and grit in 1999, at the tender age of two years, I knew absolutely nothing about canine bladder stones. Let’s just say that in the years that followed I gave myself a crash course on the topic of canine bladder stones generally, and cystine stones in particular. Many years later, when my then ten-year-old male was diagnosed with (but thankfully did not block from) struvite stones, I “knew the drill” – at least in terms of what questions to ask, the most probable treatment options, and likelihood of successfully preventing recurrences.

During the years since my first male blocked, I have been contacted

privately by dozens (yes, dozens) of basenji fanciers world-wide, whose male basenjis either suffered a life-threatening blockage from bladder stones (a ruptured bladder is almost always a fatal event,) or were found to have bladder stones of one type or another after suffering urinary tract infections (UTI’s) or showing similar symptoms. In most cases where the dog didn’t block completely, the stones were discovered through an x-ray. On the simplest level, canine bladder stones form when a substance in the urine that should be excreted in liquid form fails to break down, and instead forms crystals or grit (think of very fine sand) that, over time, precipitates into stones. Stones can vary in size from extremely small to the size of a nickel, or even larger, and the composition of any stone cannot be diagnosed by physical examination. Many types of stones are similar in appearance, and an analysis of the composition of the stone by a competent veterinary lab (like University of Minnesota

or University of Pennsylvania) is necessary to properly identify the type of stone (and treatment). Female dogs can form bladder stones, too, but due to obvious differences in anatomy, female dogs tend to be able to pass bladder stones before they cause physical symptoms. Unlucky males can form blockages at the vas penis (the area where the urethra “bends” inside the penis and turns toward its final exit point).

symptoms listed above, however – which may be mistaken for a simple UTI or prostate problems – seem to be most relevant to the diagnosis of stones in basenjis. If a basenji male exhibits any of these symptoms, and especially symptoms relating to urination (flow, posture, frequency, color, etc.) please don’t wait for your vet to mention the possibility of stones. Ask the vet to rule out the possibility with x-rays before assuming your dog has a UTI or prostate issues.

COMMON TYPES OF CANINE BLADDER STONES1 STRUVITE STONES:

Pictures courtesy of the Hill’s Atlas of Veterinary Clinical Anatomy

The picture on the left shows the urinary tract of a healthy male dog, while the picture on the right shows the urinary tract of a dog with bladder stones. What is not so simple, and what my discussions with breeders and owners of affected male basenjis illustrates in spades, is that general practice vets often don’t do a very good job of apprising owners about the type of bladder stones their dog has, how treatments for types of stones differ, and the over-all success or failure rate of various treatments. There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” band-aid approach where bladder stones are concerned! Some bladder stones are caused by genetic factors, while others may be caused by chronic infections. It is extremely important to know the TYPE of stone you are dealing with before starting treatment. As the title of this article suggests, what follows is a very basic primer on the types of canine bladder stones, their causes and treatment. My hope in sharing this information is to arm fanciers with – at the very least – the basic vocabulary and knowledge to communicate effectively with veterinarians about the potential for, and diagnosis of bladder stones, as well as the common signs and symptoms that lead to a bladder stone diagnosis.

Signs & Symptoms A wide variety of readily available on the internet and in other sources list common symptoms of canine bladder stones as vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, obvious difficulty urinating (extended squatting by males that typically leg-lift), an odd urine stream (splatter, thin, slow, dripping, etc.), visible blood in the urine, and/or the relatively sudden onset of inappropriate urination indoors by a housebroken dog (often with obvious lack of control by the dog – in other words, not “marking” behavior but a loss of control). In my own experience and the experiences of other basenji fanciers who have contacted me, basenji males tend NOT to show some of the physical symptoms of blockage or stone formation that other breeds (and mixed breeds) do. I have heard very few reports of vomiting, anorexia or lethargy. The other

Frequency: Most common type of canine bladder stone (composed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate – sometimes called “triple phosphate stones.”) Cause: Urease-producing bacteria such as Staphylococcus intermedius (in other words, chronic UTI’s.) Urine pH Most Common for Struvite Stone Formation: Alkaline (urine pH of 7 or higher.)2 Ability to Dissolve Stones Once Formed: Struvite stones can be dissolved over time by altering (acidifying) the dog’s urine pH through diet and medication. However, failure to surgically remove the stones leaves male dogs with the risk of blockage as the stones decrease in size. Struvite stone dissolving commercial diets are typically low in protein and therefore aren’t suited for long-term use. Preventing Recurrence: Adequate hydration (flushing the urinary tract), maintaining a non-alkaline urine pH (less than 7), and in some cases, antibiotic therapy to prevent the recurrence of UTI’s.

CALCIUM OXALATE STONES: Frequency: Second most common type of canine bladder stone. Cause: Genetic - excessive calcium/oxalate excretion and/or an absence of urolith (bladder stone) inhibitors. Urine pH Most Common for Calcium Oxalate Stone Formation: Not greatly impacted by urine pH. Ability to Dissolve Stones Once Formed: Calcium Oxalate stones cannot be dissolved once formed. Surgical removal is required. Preventing Recurrence: Adequate hydration (feeding canned or other foods with high water content). Low protein diets were once thought to help prevent recurrences, but current research challenges this assumption. Dogs on dietary therapy alone tend to re-block within three years. Thiazide diuretics have been shown to decrease urinary calcium excretion and can be considered for dogs suffering from chronic oxalate stone formation.

Struvite Stones

Calcium Oxalate Stones

Urate Stones

Cystine Stones

URATE STONES: Frequency: Third most common (8% of all canine urinary uroliths). Cause: Genetic predisposition (especially in Dalmatians and Bulldogs). May be associated with liver problems in some dogs. Urine pH Most Common for Urate Stone Formation: Acidic Urine (pH lower than 6). Ability to Dissolve Stones Once Formed: Stones can be medically dissolved in dogs that do not suffer from liver disease. However, there is a significant risk of blockage for male dogs during the time when the stones are dissolving. Preventing Recurrence: Efforts to dissolve and/or prevent a reoccurrence of Urate stones involve dietary changes that restrict protein (and the amino acid purine in particular), adequate hydration to flush the urinary tract, alkalization of the urine, and Allopurinal (a xanthine oxidase inhibiting drug) to prevent the formation of uric acid. Note that over-alkalization of the urine can put a dog at risk for stones that form in alkaline urine.

CYSTINE STONES: Frequency: Uncommon, accounting for only 1-2% of all canine uroliths. Cause: Genetic – an innate error of metabolism relating to the production and processing of the amino acid cystine. Research has determined that the condition is an autosomal recessive in

Newfoundlands (University of Pennsylvania), but the mode of inheritance for other affected breeds is unknown. Urine pH Most Common for Cystine Stone Formation: Acidic (lower than 6 – target pH for affected stone-formers is 7-7.4). Ability to Dissolve Stones Once Formed: Cystine stones can be medically dissolved, but the process is slow - taking 1-3 months on average. During this time, male dogs are at serious risk for blockage. Preventing Recurrence: Reduction of cystine in the urine can be facilitated by a lower protein diet, proper hydration to flush the urinary tract, and monitoring urine pH to maintain an alkaline environment. Drugs containing Thiol can help to convert cystine to a more soluble form that is less likely to form stones or grit. However, noted side effects of Thiol-containing drugs are aggression, myopathy (muscular disease), proteinuria, anemia, and thrombocytopenia (decreased number of platelets in the blood). For this reason, owners may opt for surgical stone removal, followed by careful urine pH monitoring to avoid overly acidic urine. However, a urine pH over 7.5 may promote the formation of Calcium Phosphate and Struvite bladder stones, which tend to form in alkaline urine. 1 See “Canine Uroliths” by Mark Acierno, MBA, DVM, DAVIM, published on-line by the Florida Veterinary Medical Association (2012) at: http:// www.fvmace.org/FVMA_83rd_Annual_Conference/Proceedings/Canine%20Uroliths.html. 2 Urine pH can be monitored with inexpensive pH testing strips available from most shops or internet sites that sell aquarium or swimming pool supplies.

ntil a year ago I never even contemplated feeding a raw diet to my dogs. Let’s face it. I am a bit lazy and using premium commercial dog food has always been an easy choice. My logic was simple: Commercial companies spend millions upon millions of dollars testing the best formulas for proper canine nutrition. Who am I to flaunt all the resources of these big research laboratories by thinking I can do better in my own kitchen? Even now I can offer only anecdotal evidence that my logic was correct. Commercial dog food has come a long way since the 1930’s, especially in the past 15 years, when we had no idea of the quality of food that was in those cans or bags. In fact, table scraps were likely more healthy 80 years ago. Compare what people ate back then to all the preservatives used today to extend the life of food stuffs. I realize that in some quarters the air can turn blue over the great debate of feeding raw or using a commercial product. After adding 1

raw meat to my dogs’ diet for a year, I still am sitting squarely in the middle, and I also realize that all things are not created equal when it comes to having ready access to raw meat. If you read either of the two Editor’s Columns I wrote on this topic, you already understand the challenges I encountered in my own quest to get a steady supply of raw chicken. Yet I do like feeding a raw diet, and my dogs certainly relish mealtimes now, but then I haven’t completely given up commercial food either. I find this whole topic to be an endless study in the effort to do the right thing by my dogs which leads me to the article I read recently by Dr. Ian Billinghurst, Australia, who developed the BARF diet. He discusses one of the longest and seemingly most losing battles with bone and joint disease in dogs and how this serious problem could, in all likelihood, be related to the food we feed. He agreed to let me share his writing with you. ~ The Editor.

BONE AND JOINT DISEASE IN YOUNG DOGS By Dr. Ian Billinghurst

O

ver the last 50 years it has become apparent that numerous breeds of dogs carry genes capable of causing problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia in growing pups. It is also clear that numerous individuals within each of these breeds carry these genes. Because genes are involved in producing these problems, veterinary scientists have attempted to eliminate hip and elbow dysplasia from the dog world by not breeding animals carrying damaging genes. To identify young dogs carrying the genes capable of causing skeletal diseases, specialists perform hip and/or elbow radiography. The data is assessed by a panel of experts and given a grading to indicate the degree of hip or elbow dysplasia present - that is, the degree of departure from normal those particular joints exhibit. Because dogs exhibit varying degrees of hip and elbow dysplasia, it is clear that skeletal disease in young dogs is not an all-or-nothing situation. Geneticists explain this in terms of these problems having a polygenic nature: hip and elbow dysplasia are dependent upon the interplay of numerous genes. In other words, to eliminate these problems

entirely involves eliminating numerous genes from the dog population. Vets and breeders are also aware that the diet and exercise to which young pups are subjected can influence the degree of health or ill health existing in any given joint. After five decades of attempting to remove the genes involved in skeletal disease, almost zero success has been achieved. Despite enormous efforts using radiography and culling, Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia and related conditions regularly appear in individuals from supposedly sound lines. The battle against bone and joint disease in young dogs is a war that is not being won. This forces us to ask “What are we doing wrong?” Are we looking for answers in the wrong place? Part of the dilemma is that the genes causing these skeletal diseases have never been identified. In fact, nobody is even looking for them. Another problem is that in all the current hip and elbow dysplasia schemes, nobody is asking two simple questions of the participating animals: firstly, what and how much did each dog eat while its bones were developing, and secondly, how was each dog exercised during that same period? These two vital factors in bone

Modern veterinary science assumes any deviation from normal observed on the radiographs is one hundred percent due to faulty genes. And yet basic high school biology and first year university genetics would tell us this cannot be so. To use standard geneticist’ jargon: “Phenotype does not necessarily equal genotype.” In other words, what you see - either in the dog or as demonstrated radiographically, does not necessarily reflect a genetic cause.

getting rid of the genes. It is high time we asked the question, “What calamitous environmental change occurred during the 1930’s that allowed previously dormant genes to suddenly wreak joint and skeletal havoc in practically all breeds of dogs?” Fortunately, we do not have to look very far to discover the answer to this canine conundrum.

It was during the 1930’s that the diet our dogs evolved to eat was drastically changed. Until that time, the food people fed their dogs was fundamentally the same as the dog’s evolutionary diet. The Modern veterinary science accepts that diet and exercise play a evolutionary diet of dogs consists of whole animals, fish, birds, bones, vital role in bone production. That being the case, the veterinary meat, organ meat, ingesta, other plant material including berries and profession should also be asking for each and every dog involved in its nuts, together with such “delicacies” as vomit, feces and soil. The new hip and elbow dysplasia schemes - “How much influence did diet and diet that took its place was cooked and grain-based. Because this drastic change of diet has wrought such havoc on the bones and Why did these genes “choose” to begin expressing themselves in joints of our dogs, it would seem sensible to get rid of the new diet the 1930’s? This is a question we are not asking. Instead of seeking and rather than the genes - particularly as our attempts to remove those eliminating the factor or factors that have allowed these genes to express genes has been an utter failure. Unfortunately, the veterinary profession themselves as skeletal disease since that time, we have concentrated on has not recognized any of this. BONE AND JOINT DISEASE IN YOUNG DOGS (Continued) Nor has the veterinary profession specified the genes which need to be eliminated - and yet most of those genes are well known. They are the genes coding for large size, fast growth rate, small muscles, great obesity and poor engineering. Unfortunately, these genes, which predispose an animal to skeletal disease, also code for the distinctive characteristics of each and every breed prone to skeletal diseases. They are the genes we continually select for as we maintain the characteristics of each breed. It makes little sense to both select for and eliminate the same genes within one breeding program. To eliminate skeletal problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia, it would make much more sense to remove the modern skeleton-damaging program of diet and exercise and replace it with the dogs’ evolutionary program of diet and exercise. In a nutshell, to avoid most forms of skeletal disease in our young pups, puppies must be kept slim and grown slowly, without artificial calcium supplements, on an evolutionary type diet, high in raw meaty bones, offal and vegetables. Their exercise must consist only of play not rough play, but play where the puppy stops as soon as it becomes tired. These are the simple but powerful tools which have kept dogs’ skeletons sound for millions of years. These tools are available today to any dog owner or breeder who cares to use them. They have the power to make most Juvenile Bone Disease in young dogs - of any breed - a thing of the past. A final point: it is important to keep radiographing our dogs for soundness! By combining a radiographic program with sound management, we will not only maximize the chance of raising sound pups, we will also eliminate any genes which directly cause skeletal problems, as opposed to those that merely predispose to skeletal problems. h

“The AKC heard from many dog owners whose dogs had already earned the ThD title and who wanted additional formal recognition of their ongoing commitment to volunteering to help others. We’re pleased to expand the AKC Therapy Dog program as a result of these requests,” said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of AKC Sports and Events. “We’ve also added a way to acknowledge beginning therapy dogs, hoping that this will encourage even more dogs and owners to participate in therapy dog work.1” AKC registered dogs that are approved by recognized therapy dog organizations may apply to earn the AKC Therapy Dog titles. A complete list of these organizations is located at http://www.akc.org/ akctherapydog/organizations.cfm. Even mixed breed dogs can earn AKC Therapy Dog titles as long as the dog is listed with the AKC Canine Partners program or registered in the Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program. Starting June 1st, AKC will acept applications for these new titles, with titles awarded beginning July 1st. 1 AKC.org Kipawa, 3.5 years old, started working as a therapy dog at just over a year old. A very kind and gentle dog, he took to pet therapy work easily. Kipawa has a very keen sense of understanding of both serious sickness or when a person just needs to feel a smile from his heart. That said, Kipawa has an upside down heart marking on his chest, right over his heart. The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 27

BY KYA Hi out there in Senjiland!

I

know there are a lot of us out there in North America, and I know it was terribly cold in February. So cold -minus zero in many areas. In my part of the country mom put coats on us to go out and potty. I got to wear Damon's coat, and it is so warm. Budboy wore Shane's coat (that goes back a long way) and Libby wore somebody's coat, but I don't know whose and besides she wiggles out of hers and goes out without a coat -- silly girl. When it was so cold we didn't do much. Mom took me to get my annual physical, which I passed with flying colors. I really like my doc. She pulled me through Parvo when I was little. She is always glad to see me and likewise I am glad to see her. Mom did ask about cleaning my teeth but when the doc looked at them she did not think they needed to be cleaned which made me pretty happy. However, Libby and Budboy needed to visit the dentist and since my trip to the doc, got their teeth cleaned. That crazy mom decided we needed another cat in the house because she saw a mouse trying to get into our food. Hence, in moved Little Bit. He has not figured out to not run from me. Away he went and away I went -- right after him. Scared the little guy half to death; so badly that he was not sure he could come down to eat. After much coaxing by mom, he finally appeared, scanning the rooms for any sign of me. with additional reassuring he finally came out to eat. Really now! I would not have hurt him, but I cannot pass up an opportunity for a stimulating chase. Mom was not too happy about the episode. Oh well!

I have heard that obedience will start in a day or two. Hopefully the weather will be nicer than it has been. I guess Libby will be coming also. Drat!! I went to another one of those "fun things" recently and actually enjoyed myself this time. Mom did not have to scold me or tell me to repeat anything. I do not think the teacher was there yet; if she was she didn't say anything. I did see a lot of my friends from school there, and most of them did well. A couple only came to watch, but hey, maybe they can learn by osmosis. I have had some training over the winter, but because the weather was so cold and the roads so slick, most of it was done in the house on exercises that just needed a little polish. Of course, my favorite part of the work is the treats, not the training, but I can do both. I can hardly wait for the first flowers of spring because I really like to read the neighborhood "newspaper" around the area. I also get to see Zoey if she is outside. She always smiles. She is the only dog I know that smiles for almost everybody. Mom says she likes Zoey because she reminds her of Cinder. I think mom wants me to be like Cinder. I cannot do that. We are individuals with individual personalities and cannot be made to act like someone before us. Until next time may all your dreams come true and all your trails be adventures.h

Understanding

WHITE MARKINGS by Mary Lou Kenworthy

"The basenji bitches should appear feminine (like the tri with a nicely arched neck) and the basenji dogs should appear masculine (like the red male.) Both dogs have the minimum of white."

B

reeders seem to be ignoring the importance of white markings on basenjis, or maybe they just don't understand them. Breeders and judges need to review the basenji standard where it refers to white markings: “Chestnut red; pure black; tricolor (pure black and chestnut red); or brindle (black stripes on a background of chestnut red); all with white feet, chest and tail tip. White legs, blaze and collar are optional. The amount of white should never predominate over primary color.” The standard requires white to be in only three places – on the feet, on the chest, and on the tail tip. This is considered in the category of “Irish markings.” Genetically the amount of white is determined by the distribution of color. Think of white as the absence of color – just as cold is the absence of heat.

The 'S' series covers white markings. S – self, or completely pigmented body surface (no white) s(i) – Irish spotting (sometimes called Dutch markings) s(p) – piebald spotting s(w) – extreme white piebald Some examples of breeds in each series are: S – Labrador Retrievers & Schipperkes s(i) – Basenjis & Shetland Sheepdogs s(p) – Fox Terriers & Brittany Spaniels s(w) – Great Pyrenees & White Bull Terriers There are also modifying factors that cause the amount of white to fluctuate around the given mean of color distribution at each locus. This can cause overlapping of the expression of the genes in any of the 'S' series categories. This is one of the reasons it is important to keep the basenji gene pool within the boundaries of the Irish spotting series.

The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 29

Understanding WHITE MARKINGS (continued) The aim of all breeders and judges should be to preserve and protect the basenji – one of the few ancient, nature-made breeds. It should be preserved as close to its original form as possible. If one is familiar with the history of the breed one will recall that most of the first basenjis discovered and those recently found in the wild had only the minimum of white. Unfortunately the show ring has encouraged the increase of white on basenjis. All this flash and flair seems like a good idea to call attention to individuals in the show ring. But what about in their original surroundings? In their native habitat basenjis are safer if they are not flashing white flags of surrender to their predators. All that flashy white makes them easy “leopard lunch”. Perhaps that is why more sparsely marked basenjis are found in the wild – mother nature culls the excessively white marked ones. It is easy to get more and more white. Even breeding s(i) to s(i) can produce enough white for the offspring to slip over into the piebald spotting category. In Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs, animals that have white above the hocks are considered to be “white factored,” and when two are bred together can produce the piebald and extreme whites. There are warning signs that tell breeders when they are dangerously close to going past the Irish spotting limits. One of these signs is a white spot (usually on the back) in the solid colored area. Another is when the white from the legs runs high into the colored body area. Collars that creep onto the shoulder or make a long white "finger" down the spine into the colored body area indicate the ability to produce piebald or worse. The best way to avoid over-marked (mis-marked) basenjis is to incorporate basenjis with a minimum of white. At this time they are referred to as 'plain' (used as a detriment) when they actually are more correct in markings than the leopard lunch bunch crated by humans for the show ring. Often they are also more correct in conformation as well but their attributes go unnoticed because they are not flashily marked. We need to preserve the basenji as it was created in its natural state by pulling the amount of 'white' back into moderation. Don't overlook the many virtues of basenjis with a minimum of white.

ur independent Specialty went off without a hitch on March 21st at the Will Rogers Complex in Ft. Worth Texas, as always in conjunction with their spring cluster shows. This year’s entry dropped off a bit, which did not surprise any of us. The numbers seems to be dropping at all the shows lately. But…we did manage to draw a major once again. Seems that the gas prices and room rates at motels are affecting all of us. This year we offered a Parade of Rescues. We were pleased and honored to have two entries from Mr. Rick Reinhold, our regional director for BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport). Our club, for many years ran its own rescue program but for the last several years we have worked with Rick to rescue and rehome needy Basenjis. As part of our celebration of the breed this year, we were pleased to present Mr. Reinhold with a Certificate of Appreciation, in recognition of his generous and unflagging devotion to our wonderful dogs. The parade was a huge success and the rescue dogs absolutely glowed in response to the applause. They each received a special rosette and a toy. Our Sweeps judge, Ms. Verjean Lunenschloss was a delight to have. Her kind hands and easy casual demeanor with the exhibitors put everyone at ease and her choices for winners were obviously approved by all present. Verjean’s Best Puppy In Sweeps was TAJI PLATINUM WILLIAM, owned by Ktie Campbell and Mary K. Quinnett. Best of Opposite Sex was SIGNET KNIGHTS TALE, owned by Brenda and Ciara Cassell and Gary and Wendy Bell. Her choice for Best Veteran Dog was DC STILWELLS OK REDBUD OF ZANDE, a lovely red and white boy owned by Linda and Richard Stilwell of Duncan, OK. Her BOS was DC STILWELL’S TADITA RUNS WITH THE WIND, MC. The old guys were terrific and very much appreciated by all. Ms. Lunenschloss loves the oldies too and was kind enough to announce and read the bios on all our rescue entries.

The judge for our regular classes was the most respected Mrs. Betty Stites, who in spite of nagging back problems, did a great job for us. Betty is wonderful with all ages of dogs and has an amazing connection with all exhibitors. Betty found her Best of Breed dog in CH.AKUABA N ELDORADO CHARIOTS OF FIRE, owned by Dianna Sanders of Tomball, Texas. BOS went to CH. ALFHEIM-KHANI’S SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE, owned by Dianna and Mark Sanders, K. Britton and A. McLeod of Tomball, Texas. Best of Winners went to SIGNET ‘TIS-A GONE WITH THE WIND, owned by Brenda and Ciara Cassell from Ft. Worth Texas and Fred and Joyce Hughes of Pocatello, Idaho. Best Veteran Dog was DC STILWELL’S OK REDBUD OF ZANDE, MC, owned by Linda and Richard Stilwell of Duncan, OK. The Stilwells were also honored to own the Best Veteran Bitch, DC STILWELL’S TADITA RUNS WITH THE WIND, MC. Awards of Merit were given to GCH, CH ILLUSION’S STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, owned by the Bob and Terry Reed of Houston, TX and GCH, CH AHMAHR NAHR’S BEST OF THE BEST, owned by Jennie Behles of Albuquerque, NM. It was a great evening and I sure hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. The only thing that marred the weekend was the news that Richard Stilwell has passed away Friday evening. Richard and Linda have been long time club members, and Richard was a dear friend and will be sadly missed by all of us. The next evening, our between shows dinner was well attended and Mexican food was greatly enjoyed by all. And so it goes….at least for another year. Now all we have to do is get started on the 2015 Specialty.
