FROM THE EDITOR IN DEFENSE OF BREEDERS - - The Good Guys

T

he September AKC Chairman’s report by A la n K alte r w as inspiring. Finally, a strong public push-back to redefine the good guys! We, the collective WE, have been standing back while allowing AR groups to define that all breeders are “bad” and that AR groups are good guys and saviors of pets around the world. Rather than anguish over why we have been so passive, let’s look forward to things we can do to reverse this notion. I have heard many times lately, “It’s a whole new world out there.” Yes, it is. A product of the 1940s I am learning it’s hard tuning in to how people talk today and to understand they might have completely different ideas of what they want and how they are going to get it. This generation span is almost like living in parallel universes and far greater than what my parents suffered through. I was proud that I was able to leap to the 90’s and embrace that age of technology. But 15 years later, I discover “It IS a whole new world out there.!” How do breeders get back to being heroes instead of villains? How do we rewrite the equation to read: BASENJIS + BREEDERS = ASSETS? We need to assure younger groups that Breeders also equal “safe haven, can be trusted, give a sense of security, offer help.” Consider this a global campaign --what is happening here in the US to paint good, dependable breeders as BAD is happening in practically every country on this planet. I am guilty of being passive, of thinking I am just one voice and who is going to listen to me? I tell myself, “AKC is all powerful and has lots of money and plenty of lobbyists. They will do the work.” What I discovered is that this notion only feeds my apathy and translates to the AR folks that I don’t care enough to push back. Every major city and even many smaller municipalities are under fire. We have been told the AR groups have millions of dollars behind them and while that feels daunting when I look at my own little checkbook; as a collective group, we are far wealthier and by standing united, are far and above more powerful! We need to take a lesson from those who have been successful embracing every means possible to win. Look at our clubs’ websites, purge all that 90’s mentality language, capitalize on the notion that people have shorter attention spans, and use power words to capture their attention. Quit drawing attention to the very people we want to rise above. We want to be champions of our breed, not wait until these dogs are gone to wonder what happened! 

In Rememberance of MIDGE GREENLEE October 17, 1933 - September 3, 2013 “I snapped this photo during the 2006 BCOA National Specialty and can’t think of a more fitting image that captures the esscence of Midge Greenlee. She had style and grace that matched her diplomacy and business acumen. It was this strength of character that made her an icon in the breed She was a true friend and mentor who is dearly missed.”

“Midge had basenjis since 1967 and in 1974 started establishing her SERENGETI line. She served the BCOA long and well. She could always be counted on to do the right thing. She was an intelligent and savvy lady in every sense of the word.” ~ Damara Bolte’ REVEILLE BASENJIS

~Wanda Pooley ADVENTURELAND

“I was truly privileged to serve on the BCOA Board with Midge for over a decade. She was a brilliant business woman, mediator and conciliator, and had a way of cutting straight to the heart of almost any issue. I will miss her most, however, not as a partner in the business of managing BCOA, but as a friend. Our many late night phone calls over the years typically started with Club business, but veered into discussions of life-lessons learned, people, places and basenjis remembered, and personal regrets and triumphs. I will always treasure Midge’s insightfulness, candor, and wry sense of humor. She loved her basenjis and her Dobes with a quiet passion that perhaps belied its depth, but was always evident in her tone when speaking of them, or even just saying their names. Midge could also find a bright light at the end of any dark tunnel, and she showed me on more than one occasion that when you’re in one of life’s dark tunnels, the light that guides you out must often be your own. Midge’s life - a well-traveled journey - has ended, but we are all the better for having shared our road with Midge.” ~ Karla Schreiber, NEW WORLD BASENJIS “Midge was a brilliant woman of many talents. She was a scrupulous business person, a skilled skier and sailor, who loved both snow and the ocean, and a talented artist who had studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Most of all, she was an indomitable woman of great courage, fierce determination, and absolute integrity, deeply loyal to her friends and devoted to her family. A major focus of her life was breeding and showing Basenjis, aiming to produce championship-quality dogs which would also be wonderful pets and companions. Basenjis from her small private kennel, Serengeti, were well known and successful in homes and in AKC Conformation dog shows. The appreciation of her steadfast, reasonable leadership as president of the Basenji Club of America for ten years, she continued to serve the club as a Board member. She also served in the past as president of the Ft. Lauderdale Kennel Club”. ~ THE GREENLEE FAMILY The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 6

ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

PART IV - AND NOW WE WAIT covers the pregnancy, using ultrasound and radiographs, and whelping, as well as recapping the science of artificial insemination in dogs. PART IV is the last in this series about artificial insemination. We have learned the history of AI, the best methods to use when this is the breeding choice, why it’s important to the preserve genes, and how AI has evolved into the 21st century to give breeders broader choices. Saving the best for last, now read about the miracle of birth. PART I - LET ME COUNT THE WAYS - 1st Quarter, 2013 PART II - THE DOG - PRESERVING THOSE GENES - 2nd Quarter 2013 PART III - THE BITCH - 3rd Quarter, 2013

by Wanda Pooley

PART IV: AND NOW WE WAIT Worthy goals, development of the necessary knowledge and skills, and ethical considerations all are essential components of any technology that will result in a positive impact on society and the environment. Thus, the impact of AI was much more profound than simply another way to impregnate females. [R.H. Foote, “The History of Artificial Insemination.”]

AND

Now We Wait is defined by the measure of our patience and the process we choose to confirm pregnancy. Everything that has been done leading up to this point will hopefully come to fruition. No matter what our options are going forward, the bitch is either pregnant or she isn’t.

ABDOMINAL PALPATION This procedure may be used between day 21 and 31 post breeding and is relatively inexpensive -- the cost of an office visit. After day 31, the embryo sacs become more confluent (come together) making it harder to distinguish between one whelp and another.

Detecting pregnancy in canines can be done by a number of methods: • Manual palpation • Imaging using ultrasound or X-ray • Blood test to detect relaxin hormone • The old, reliable “wait and see” method Gestation in dogs is relatively short -- anywhere from 58 to 68 days, depending on when conception actually took place. If surgical implantation of semen is done, a bitch will whelp in 59 days. The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 7

PART IV: AND NOW WE WAIT - (Continued) ADVANTAGES: OF PALPATION • Inexpensive. DISADVANTAGES: • Difficult to accurately count the number of fetuses • Cannot determine the viability of the whelps. • The bitch may tense and make palpation difficult to feel the embryos. • Bitches may carry whelps more cranial (towards the front) where they are hard to detect.

USING IMAGING TECHNOLOGY ULTRASOUND This method uses a machine that can create a visual image by producing an oscillating sound pressure wave with a frequency greater than the upper limit of the human hearing range. Ultrasound is thus not separated from normal sound based on any differences in physical properties, only the fact that humans cannot hear it. Ultrasound devices operate with frequencies from 20 kHz up to several gigahertz.

At the turn of the century, the cattle industry used this noninvasive technology to improve animal health and found it to be especially useful to evaluate the characteristics and health of unborn calves. Because ultrasound is non-invasive, there is no risk to the bitch

or her fetuses. The most accurate time to use ultrasound imaging is between day 18 and 25. Beyond that time frame, the uterine horns double and twist in shape to accommodate the growing whelps. ADVANTAGES OF ULTRASOUND • Pregnancy can be detected earlier than by manual palpation. • The accuracy of the number of puppies is approximately +/- one puppy. • The viability of the whelps can be seen. • Age can be more accurately established through the visual appearance of the heart beats. • Age can also be established by observing key changes in the fetuses, such as intestinal motility. • Empty sacs can be identified, which would indicate reabsorption of a fetus. • If performed closer to the whelping date, abnormalities can be identified, such as hydrocephalus, and skulls can be measured -- something helpful to know if the bitch has a small pelvic opening. DISADVANTAGES: • Cost. • Availability. Depending on size of your community, this may not be an option. For example, in my town, we have many veterinary clinics, but only one or two have ultrasound machines. RADIOGRAPHS The X-rays are used to view, either by film or digital image, a non-uniformly composed material, such as bone. The density and composition of each area determines how much of the ray is absorbed. The ‘X’ in radiation was assigned because it was an unknown type of radiation. In 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, discovered that while the X-ray could pass through human tissue, it could not pass through bone or metal. In dogs, the skeleton ossifies (calcifies) approximately 45-49 days into gestation. After this period, the skulls and spines of the whelps are clearly visible. ADVANTAGES OF USING RADIOGRAPHS •

Simple, readily available, and less expensive than ultrasound imaging.

The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 9

PART IV: AND NOW WE WAIT - (Continued) DISADVANTAGES • A longer waiting time before testing to ensure the hormone level is at its highest level - about five weeks post-mating. • Requires blood to be drawn to extract serum or plasma. • May need to repeat the test. Two negative relaxin tests one week apart will usually confirm a bitch is not pregnant. However, in some rare situations, a third test may be needed. • In many toy breeds or bitches carrying only one or two puppies, the placenta may not produce enough relaxin to get a positive test result. • Test cannot predict an approximate number of puppies or determine the viability of the fetuses.

‘WAIT AND SEE’ APPROACH • • • •

Visibility and the number of puppies is easily seen on radiographs. Still, the accuracy is +/- one puppy. The sizes of the skulls can be compared in size to the width of the dam’s pelvis. If a bitch is having hard, unproductive labor, X-ray is useful to see if a puppy is or isn’t present in the birth canal. No puppy in the birth canal may indicate a C-section is needed. May be used to verify if a fetus is still in the uterus after the bitch appears to be done whelping.

DISADVANTAGES • A longer waiting time to confirm pregnancy due to the greater risk to the developing fetuses during early stages of gestation. Using X-ray should be done only in the last trimester. • Radiographs cannot determine viability. Unless a puppy has been dead for some time and is already decomposing, there is no way to determine if all the skeletons are living puppies.

BLOOD TEST TO DETECT FOR RELAXIN HORMONE A blood serum/plasma test measures the level of a hormone called relaxin. This hormone is produced by the developing placentas following implantation of the embryos, about 19-21 days after breeding. Relaxin can be detected in the blood in most bitches as early as 22-27 days post breeding. However, this hormone reaches its highest level between the 6th to 8th week and then declines rapidly just prior to whelping. The optimum time for doing this test is between day 33-35. Testing earlier than this may yield false negative results because the hormone level may still be too low. ADVANTAGES OF HORMONE TESTING • Just a few seconds of “hands-on” time. • Test result is available in about 10 minutes after the blood is drawn and prepped. • Can determine the difference between a pregnancy and a pseudo (false) pregnancy.

Over the years I have used palpation, ultrasound, and X-ray to discover if my bitch was pregnant. Eventually I managed to acquire patience and have settled on this old tried-and-true method. Quite simply, as I previously stated, the bitch is either pregnant or she isn’t, and at this juncture nothing can be done to change the outcome. If you, too, are willing to wait, by week five after AI it is usually evident if your bitch is pregnant. In 2010, my bitch, Lottie, had AI surgery using fresh chilled semen. By day 28, it was clear she was in whelp. However, two years later when Seri was surgically inseminated, it took closer to six weeks before I could confidently proclaim she was pregnant. Of course, the “wait-and-see” method will not reveal the number of live whelps a bitch is carrying, but again, this is not going to change anything. Yet, I recognize that we humans are a curious bunch so knowing the number of puppies is always gratifying.

SINCE

1784 when Lazzaro Spallanzani performed that first successful insemination of a bitch, science has come a long way. By the 1930’s artificial insemination had revolutionized the dairy and swine industry. The use of the straw to freeze multiple breedings from one semen collection, and the discovery that sperm could be stored indefinitely by using liquid nitrogen were quantum leaps forward. Thus, modern day artificial insemination is successful because of those scientists from the past and their determination through decades of extensive testing, evaluating, and studying the reproductive systems of many species. Artificial Insemination is not the panacea for a breeding program, but all the scientific groundwork accomplished from that 18th century success has given breeders remarkable opportunities for planning future generations of dogs.

The final page of Part IV shares the excitement of watching a miracle unfold. In 2012 I held in my hands puppies whose notable sire has been dead since 2003. This was one of the most amazing experiences in all my years as a breeder. Page 11 illustrates that event.

Basenji Club of America, Inc. attends

AKC

MEET the BREEDS

The Basenji: Ancient Hunter and All-Around Hound The new Basenji Club of America, Inc. booth for public education events made its debut at the AKC Meet the Breeds event in New York City on September 28th and 29th, 2013. The dual-themed booth featured dramatic photo posters that illustrated the basenji in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the basenji as our All-Around Hound in the western world. The group that designed this booth included Rande Mathers, Karla Schreiber, Sandy Tucker, Janet Ketz, and Lisa Marshall (member, BCOA Public Education/ Outreach committee) with additional help from Clay Bunyard, Wanda Pooley, and Sue Joyner. The core group met regularly between November 2012 and September 2013 to plan, refine, and implement our vision for this new booth. On Thursday, September 26th, Karla, Lisa, and New World Basenjis Warren and Willow, and the booth piled into Karla’s large van. Partners Janet Ketz and Sandy Tucker, in Janet’s car, left Illinois for New York City. By Friday night at 6:00 the booth was set up in our reserved space in the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The job done, we headed back to our hotel across the river in New Jersey. I will spare readers the details of leaving Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel during rush hour on a Friday night, but suffice it to say we all survived. Karla and Janet have my eternal admiration for their ability to deal with the challenges of driving and parking in the city.

Jacob Javits Convention Center New York, New York September 28 – 29, 2013

The event ran from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm both days. All the breed booths were arranged alphabetically which put us between the Barbets and the always fun Beagles. It seemed like we were busy every minute of both days. In the morning on Saturday our basenji ambassadors, Warren (red and white male) and Willow (Warren’s red and white dam,) shared the attention from the very polite visitors. In the afternoon, Chris Maxka (Sundiata Basenjis) took over with Pi (brindle male) and little Swan (tri puppy bitch) while Warren and Willow took a well-earned break.

by Lisa Marshall and Karla Schreiber The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 12

On Sunday Warren and Willow shared the attention - and they were just as pleasant with the constant petting at the end of the day as when it began. An event like the Meet the Breeds demands the very best of temperaments for the dogs on display, and our booth dogs both days were more than up to the task. We are very proud of Warren, Willow, Pi, and Swan. The booth was set up so that one side showed The Ancient Hunter – using large posters of basenjis from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These posters were created from photographs taken by Mike Work, Jo Thompson, and Katie Campbell. The other side of the booth depicted the AllAround Hound – again using large picture posters to show off basenjis doing what they do best. The posters displayed lure coursing, agility, tracking, a child with her basenji puppy, a man with his basenji on his shoulders, a woman with two basenjis, and a lovely Swedish garden scene with four basenjis. These photos were provided by Terry Colbert, Linda Siekert, Terry Fiedler/ Joe Stewart, Suzanne LaCroix, Mike Schaal, Terry and Lisa Lemberger, and Helene Roos. The enlargements ranged from 20 inches by 30 inches all the way up to two life-sized photos of six feet by two feet. The life-sized photos were displayed on the backdrop while all the posters were arranged on easels along both sides of the booth. The visitors asked good questions. As expected, we answered questions about the noises basenjis make, the temperament, shedding, allergies, sociability, and lifespan. But many people also asked detailed questions about feeding, proper fencing for a yard, training, socialization, and activities basenjis like. People and especially the children were gentle and considerate of the dogs, which we all appreciated. AKC went above and beyond to make our experience a good one in so many ways. From a personal standpoint, we appreciated the help with unloading and loading the booth materials by The Foley Bros. Company. From a booth exhibitor standpoint, we appreciated the flyer each ticketholder received with instructions on how to approach a dog safely. We live in a time of challenges to purebred dog breeding and dog ownership in general. Anti-dog laws abound from coastto-coast in America. What a wonderful and energizing experience to see the throngs of New Yorkers attending the AKC Meet the Breeds, dedicated to celebrating purebred dogs and their parent clubs!h The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 13

AKC SPEAKS OUT!

T

his past September, Alan Kalter, Chairman of the American Kennel Club, wrote an powerful message addressing the adverse effects caused by AR groups that have harmed the reputations of responsible breeders and purebred dogs. This topic is not new; the legal ramifications of their deeds, nationally and locally, have become very real to all of us who have been painted by the same broad brush. Few breeders and exhibitors will escape the damage being inflicted by anti-animal legislation. In truth, we have lost the home-court advantage! These AR groups have effectively redefined who we really are and what we stand for. To these well-organized, well-funded groups, we (the responsible breeders)are portrayed as dishonest and the sole cause of why dogs

land in animal shelters; that we are only interested money and winning, and that we generate dogs with health and temperament problems. What is more dismaying is that a good portion of the public has actually come to believe this fiction! I am excited to hear that AKC is pushing back in an effort to re-establish the respect and enthusiasm for purebred dogs. Now, what are we going to do to help? This is our cause, too. Read AKC Chairman Kalter’s report below. Consider his plan for reaching out to the public with the truth about who we are and what we represent. Write your own story and share it with AKC. Ask what we can do to be even more effective. Talk to your own community leaders.

2013 AKC SEPTEMBER CHAIRMAN’S REPORT New York, NY – Last Thursday we posted a charming photograph of three Golden Retriever puppies on the American Kennel Club Facebook page. The caption was “I love my breeder” with a request to “share your love for your dog’s breeder.” The image was shared 2,500 times, received 11,000 likes and almost 500 comments. We posted this because we love responsible breeders, but also because we wanted to see the reaction it would elicit. The post sparked a lengthy conversation about the merits of finding your new dog at a breeder vs. adopting a dog. That passionate debate proved two important issues. There are ardent, articulate, and knowledgeable supporters of responsible breeding who possess facts and are capable of persuasively educating the public about the truth of responsible breeding. However, it also proved that there is a great deal of misinformation about responsible breeding that result in significant prejudice against breeders. There is no doubt that prejudice against breeders has impacted our breeders, our sport, and the public’s ability to enjoy the unique experience of a purebred dog in their lives. Just 20 years ago, a purebred dog was the dog to have in your life. Twenty years ago, a responsible breeder was viewed as a respected resource. Twenty years ago there were virtually no important legislative efforts aimed at eradicating all dog breeding. What changed in those 20 years? The noble quest to give every dog a “forever” home was co-opted by the animal rights organizations as a method to raise funds for their mission to completely eliminate pet ownership. Under the guise of supporting adoption, they have been raising a significant war chest – over $200 million last year alone – to fuel a campaign aimed squarely at destroying our ability to preserve breeds for future generations. As told by AR groups, responsible breeders have been dishonestly accused of being the sole cause of dogs in shelters – not irresponsible owners. As told by AR groups, purebred dog breeders have been maliciously portrayed as evil people only interested in money and winning at events, at the expense of their dogs’ health and well-being. As told by AR groups, purebred dogs have been wrongly defined as being plagued with genetic health and temperament problems caused by breeders. After 20 years of this propaganda – mostly unchallenged by those who know better – a portion of the public has accepted this fiction as reality. No more. AKC Staff led by Chris Walker along with Bob Amen and I have been working with Edelman, our new public outreach partner, on the plan that will change the current conversation, as demonstrated in that Facebook post, by confronting the prejudice and telling the truth about purebred dogs and their responsible breeders. We will focus our efforts on two key audiences – families with kids 8-12 and empty nesters. These groups represent the critical inflection points for dog ownership and hold our best opportunities to correctly educate the public about purebred dogs and responsible dog breeding. An additional audience will be federal and local legislators. Our experience makes it clear that once legislators know the truth, the legislative outcome is positive. We will expand our voice to include breeders, dog owners, AKC thought leaders, veterinarians, and AKC’s over 700,000 The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 16

grassroots followers. We will relentlessly focus on these foundational story themes: the unique qualities of purebred dogs, the desirability of purebred dogs as family pets, the truth about the health of purebred dogs, and the truth about responsible breeders. We will use every outreach channel to relentlessly tell our story in a shareable and searchable way, including national and local media, hybrid media, AKC’s own media, and social media. By focusing on these key audiences with expanded, credible voices centered on our core narratives we will get better stories in the media, more often. In addition, we will immediately and aggressively respond to any attack utilizing our partners, our supporters, and our full media assets. There are three things you can do to help regain control of our destiny. Tell us what you are hearing from your community, what the toughest questions are that you face. We’ll compile the answers and get you a toolkit to respond from a position of knowledge, strength, and pride. Tell us your story – how you picked your breed, why you became a breeder and what has changed about the health of your breed due to the efforts of your Parent Club. Tell us who you know who can help tell the truth – supportive officials in parent, children’s, or seniors’ organizations either locally or nationally; a veterinarian who is actively involved in a professional organization either locally or nationally; or an informed and outspoken government official. You can share all of this information with Chris Walker at cxw2@akc.org or 212-696-8232 As an avid Bullmastiff breeder, I am reminded of the description of that great protector of the family and property – fearless and confident, yet docile. I believe the AKC is a great protector of our rights to responsibly breed dogs. We too are fearless and confident, but it is time to stop being docile regarding the lies and propaganda that defile purebred dogs and responsible breeders. We will communicate the truth about purebred dogs and their responsible breeders, emotionally and memorably. We will increase the desire to own a purebred dog. We will de-stigmatize responsible breeders. We will change the conversation. We will change the future. As always, your comments are most welcome at atk@akc.org. Sincerely, Alan Kalter, Chairman The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 17

When Enough is Enough: Domestic Violence, People and Pets

The

B-LEGAL Blog

Women in domestic abuse situations often have children to protect and care for – but the companion animal members of a household are also placed in harm’s way by the threat of domestic violence.

LAST

week, I received a letter from the American Kennel Club requesting contributions to one of its affiliated public charities, the AKC Humane Fund. As I scanned the letter, I read the following statistics:

By Karla Schreiber, Esq.

In a nationwide (U.S.) study, more than 71% of battered women reported their abusers harmed, killed or threatened a companion animal.

Approximately 71-85% of women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their abuser threatened to injure the family pet.

Multiple independent surveys of battered women indicate that approximately 18-48% of battered women delayed leaving an abusive partner because they were concerned about the welfare of family pets.

These statistics didn’t catch my attention because I was surprised by the numbers. Instead, they reminded me of a time during my own divorce many years ago when I struggled with concerns about what might happen to my basenjis if I had to go out and leave them at home. I also struggled with the need to locate rental housing to accommodate myself,

my son and our dogs in a hurry. I was lucky. We did not face a domestic violence situation, and I had resources stashed away to pay rent for a small home with a dog-friendly landlord. I was able to hire a moving van. But to my mind, luck is a major element that stood between me – all those years ago – and the women in those AKC statistics. Domestic violence occurs at all socio-economic levels, in all cultures, and includes both physical and emotional abuse. Women in domestic abuse situations often have children to protect and care for – but the companion animal members of a household are also placed in harm’s way by the threat of domestic violence. For those without independent resources to remove themselves, their children and their companion animals from an abusive household, the choices can be grim. Until recently, those who were forced to enter shelters and similar domestic abuse programs (even in the short term), faced the almost certain specter of “no room at the inn” for their family pets. Thankfully, in part as a result of media coverage of the separation of pets from their owners during natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and Super Storm Sandy (and the human lives lost when individuals refused to evacuate without their companion animals), there is a growing movement to assist victims of domestic violence who must leave home with their pets in tow. The Animal Welfare Institute maintains a Safe Havens Mapping Project, that provides a state-by-state list of shelters and assistance programs that can find accommodations for companion animals in a time of crisis. Currently, the Safe Havens website lists over 1,400 safe havens nationwide, all searchable by zip code: http://awionline.org/safe-havens. On the front lines of the effort, non-profit entities like the Urban Resource Institute and the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals have started pilot programs that allow domestic violence survivors, their children and their pets to stay together in designated shelters. See www.mamiverse.com/nyc-domestic-violence-petsshelters-44819/. Similarly, the new AKC Humane Fund directly supports the presence of pets in domestic violence shelters. The AKC Humane Fund Women’s Shelter Grant program is already actively funding shelters in states like Missouri, where women, their children and their companion animals can stay safely – together. For information on making individual or corporate donations to the AKC Humane Fund, visit www.akchumanefund.org, or call 212696-8288. Statistics like the ones referenced at the beginning of this blog don’t have names or faces – but behind each statistic is a real person facing personal violence as well as the fear of harm to their children and animals. They may not be any of us, our relatives or friends – but they could be. Shouldn’t that be a sufficient call to action?

Tips to Remember about Companion Animals and Domestic Violence: •

Twenty-five states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico (as of 2013), allow companion animals to be included in domestic violence orders of protection (TRO’s). For a list of states that expressly authorize pets to be protected by TRO’s, see www.animallaw.info/articles/art_details/ print.htm. If a state is not listed here, a judge may still have the option to issue additional orders, in conjunction with a temporary restraining order, to protect pets and other property from harm.

If a pet is injured in a domestic violence dispute, file a police report, and save copies of all vet bills. The incident may result in criminal charges, and also help to build the case for a restraining order to protect the entire family. It may also (together with other evidence) trigger applicable state victim compensation programs to cover the costs associated with abuse and seeking protection from abuse.

Formulate an emergency plan ahead of time for sheltering companion animals. There is an excellent “Personal Safety Plan” on the AARDVARC.org (An Abuse, Rape, and Domestic Violence Aid & Resource Collection) website (www.aardvarc. org). Speak with family and friends about whether, and for how long, they might be able to house all family members (including pets) in an emergency.

Be able to establish conclusive ownership of companion animals (proof of vaccinations, licenses, AKC or other registration certificates). Proof of ownership is necessary to combat assertions that a pet is actually the sole property of an abuser.

OTTER POINT

Wache Isle of Eriska Christina Jacobsen Scotland

E

Eternal Watcher

arlier this year we launched our Name the Otter contest, and last week we welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Miller and Cassie to unveil the plaque underneath our friend on the rock. You may also remember we set out to name the bronze otter sitting on the rock at Otter Point at Eriska in conjunction with our 40th anniversary as a hotel. You may remember we announced the winner, Jo Thompson? If not, here’s a quick recap!

The Bronze Sculpture

Victoria & Douglas Miller and their basenji, Cassie.

Wache was made by bronze sculptor Kenneth Robertson. Using advanced techniques, he initially created a wire meshed mould which was then cast as a simple albino plaster. Ensuring that the sculpture fitted in to the environment and, more importantly, onto a rock at Otter Point was essential. It was moulded to fit a particular rock looking a specific way to guard the island. This took several visits and much hard work from Kenneth and his son. Dr. Jo Thompson-winner of the Name the Otter Contest

Clawless Otter. At that time, the species had recently been declared extinct. However, that classification was based on absence of reports not absence of the otters. So, she was launched into the world of otter conservation as the world expert on the Congo Clawless Otter species. Through her work she also met Victoria Miller from Oban, which is how Jo found out about our little contest! As we mentioned above, Mr. and Mrs. Miller and Cassie arrived last week to unveil the plaque we had made for Wache this summer. They have had basenjis for years. The picture on the first page of this article shows them with their basenji, Cassie - who was the reason Jo found out about our otter contest! Unfortunately, Jo could not join us to unveil the plaque’s being attached to the rock so they brought Cassie instead!

The First Meeting

We felt our sculpture needed a name, and so we began our search towards this effort earlier in the summer. After a few weeks of collecting suggestions and votes, a name was announced; Wache, sent in by Dr. Jo Myers Thompson,is old Scottish for ‘Eternal Watcher.’ D r. J o M y e r s Thompson is the Executive Director of the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation, a not-for-profit umbrella organisation overseeing a variety of conservation efforts in the deep heart of equatorial Africa. By profession, she is a primatologist and naturalist.

“Cassie had 7 pups this summer, 31st July, which is why the visit has had to wait! Cassie and the pups are healthy and enjoy life off the west coast of Scotland,” Victoria assures me. “Cassie’s parents are on the other side of the planet, living the ‘American Dream’ with Jo”. With all this talk about basenjis, you might wonder about the breed itself.

Victoria met Jo through an online forum and a mutual friend. They met for the first time in person when Jo was speaking at the Hope4Apes conference in London 2010, hosted by Sir David Attenborough. Helena Lane, a fellow breeder, and Victoria travelled to London to meet with Jo Thompson to discuss the possibility of importing one of Jo’s Lukuru Basenji’s puppies. The following year (September 2011) Cassie was imported into the UK - the first Congolese Native basenji since the early foundation stock. Although born in the USA, Cassie was bred from pure native stock brought back by Jo from a conservation area in the Democratic Republic of Congo where there are no other dogs except the native basenjis. Cassie is the first truly African basenji to arrive in the UK for 70 years!

Jo received her doctorate degree from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and is a contributing author to several books about ecology, distribution and evolution. Since 1995 Jo has been involved with otter conservation, which started with her raising an infant Congo

The size of a fox terrier, the basenji has a wrinkled brow, prick ears, pliant skin, short tight curled tail, very short coat, and wash themselves like a cat. They are a hunting dog capable of very high

speeds who point and flush game, but their most unique features are they are barkless and carry no dog odours, a most useful asset when they are in pursuit of game who do not easily pick up their scent. Discovered in the African Congo with Pygmy hunters, early explorers called the dogs after the tribes that owned them or the area in which they were found, such as Zande dogs or Congo terriers. The native tribes used the dogs (which often wore large bells around their necks) as pack hunters, driving game into nets. Early attempts to bring basenjis to England in the late 1800s and early 1900s were unsuccessful because the dogs all succumbed to distemper. In the 1930s, a few dogs were successfully brought back to England and became the foundation (along with subsequent imports from the Congo and Sudan) of the breed outside of Africa. The name basenji, or “bush thing,” was chosen. The early imports attracted much attention, and soon after the basenji was brought to America. The breed’s popularity as both a pet and show dog grew modestly but steadily. In the 1950s, a surge of popularity occurred as a result of a book and movie featuring a basenji!

I asked Victoria about her relationship with otters. “As you can see I took my otter t-shirt out for the occasion! No really, my relationship with otters is mainly through Jo, however living in the West Coast of Scotland, you can’t help but have an affinity with the local wildlife and otters are truly special creatures.” We can’t say anything other than that we agree with you! At Eriska there is an abundance of wildlife, such as red deer, badgers, birds and otters (!) in such tranquil surroundings - what is there not to love! We want to thank you both for coming to see the plaque unveiled and of course for bringing Cassie along! Looking to cure the ‘winter’ blues? Check out our three-night rates this month. Visit Wache, have some heavenly delicious food in our restaurant and a soak in the Jacuzzi in the Stables Spa. h

Basenji Club of Estonia

Championship Show 2013

By Sally Wallis

To judge a Specialty show of any Club which fosters our beloved breed is an honour but to officiate at the first ever big show of a new Basenji Club is especially so. When the invitation from the Basenji Club of Estonia arrived, I didn’t hesitate and accepted forthwith – only afterwards wondering if Marvin would be able to cope with the Aga (kitchen range), the basenji pack, watering the greenhouse, and keeping the garden in order!

IT’S

cheap and easy to use a mobile phone these days and connections are excellent so I knew I could maintain contact and call in help from the village at need. The quickest way to get to Tallinn turned out to be on a direct flight with easyJet – three hours instead of eight via Helsinki (and one-third the cost!) Only trouble is, just three flights a week. By booking my flights on a ‘no-frills’ airline very early in the year, I was able to secure extended leg-room seats and so guarantee a modicum of comfort. Viktoria Kolotsei met me at Tallinn and drove me immediately the 200 or so kilometres through the heavily forested plains to Tartu – second city of Estonia and absolutely beautiful. Cobbled pedestrian areas and extensive parks throughout the Old Town. I love to walk and take photos so was in heaven! Next morning, Viktoria took me to the ‘Swedish Project’ – a resident science exhibition. Enormous fun and very educational for children and for me! We walked through the ancient botanical gardens, and then my native guide had to go to work, so I spent the afternoon exploring the Old Town and climbing to the Struve Observatory. Viktoria returned to take me out to supper, and as we sat outside a restaurant in the Old Town Square, what should walk by but a basenji puppy on a lead! For a country with only 60 or so basenjis, to meet with one in the street must have been a rarity!

Friday we drove back north to Tallinn, watching the storm clouds gathering over that city with increasing trepidation. The weather forecast did give rain, but we hoped they’d got it wrong! The Show was held on the running track of an athletic stadium while preparations for a two day International Show were proceeding on the centre grass. We parked at the top and looked down into the ‘bowl’ as basenji after basenji, several in groups of two or three, negotiated the steep steps through the spectator stands and assembled around the tent erected for the ring steward, ring secretary and display of cups and trophies. Exhibitors brought individual tents for themselves and even small, crate-sized ones for their dogs, which they put up along the track and under the trees on the grassy bank. Very grateful thanks to my ring secretary and steward – the former kept up with my dictation, and the latter ran the ring with commendable efficiency. We arranged the table on which to judge the dogs close to where the secretary sat so that I could save time and dictate a critique for each dog as I went over it. The large ring was defined with ‘Royal Canin’ tape laid on the ground. Since no judge is allowed to adjudicate more than 80 dogs in a day, and when entries soared over 60 with a month still to go before closing, Club Chairman Kerli worried lest sexes might have to be split between two judges. However, it wasn’t necessary, and

Basenji Club of Estonia - Championsip Show 2013 - continued we hit the maximum spot on! Now the event is over and I can browse the catalogue, I see we had entries from Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. During the two-day international show over the weekend I met and chatted (sometimes with an interpreter from among the basenji exhibitors) with many people whose names I had often typed into the database. (Breeders don’t appear on-line but they are entered into the base.) It was all very friendly, and I was delighted to make so many new friends -- canine and human! I can’t mention them all here but one old gentleman was particularly exciting for me. A dog I never expected to meet but who appears over and over again in the d/b as Dad – RKF / RUS Ch Mount Takoma Afrikanskiy Molchun, foundation basenji of the Afrikanskiy Molchun kennel of Marina Belonina in translation ‘Silent African’ although I have even seen it as ‘taciturn African’! I was thrilled to meet this 10.5 year old in wonderful condition with super muscle tone. As a bonus, he is obviously a family pet! A gentleman stood, through sunshine and rain, during almost the entire show –it turned out he was the Frenchman scheduled to judge Group 5 next day. On Sunday I was thrilled to see him give basenji breeder Maria Kanygina’s team Best in Show – The Tim Spirit handlers even changed into identical dresses for the Group, just as they had when they won under me!

After the French judge had completed our breed on Saturday I went to speak to him. He had given CACIB/BOB to my Best in Show, LT / EST Ch Libertas Laisves Vejas from Lithuania. He is a gorgeous boy who ticks all the boxes, and I was delighted to learn later that he is the grandson of a dog who made the long drive from Lithuania to Crufts in 2010 and took the Dog Challenge Certificate under Simon Parsons - LT/LV/EST/POL/SLO/H/BY Ch Juma Mongo Asiaczek. My Best Opposite Sex, Rosone’s Retro Rimembranza from Finland, won Open Class under the Frenchman but got no further. She was a surprise to me because she didn’t catch my eye at once. But she is oh so well constructed and in the Challenge for Best Bitch I kept going back to her. Next day, someone questioned my reasoning so I grabbed the girl and explained exactly WHY she was such a lovely basenji. My interlocutor agreed with my explanation! The French judge and I chatted for a while, and he chided me for paying more attention to movement than to heads. No apologies from me – if a basenji doesn’t move, it can’t hunt or perform the functions expected of it! He also pointed out that, while the English only check bite, the French insist on opening the whole mouth and counting teeth. Apparently he found several missing – a fact which I’d missed. He also complained about too many fly-away ears. In the rain many dogs ‘drooped’ as I went over them but the ears came up quickly enough with a click of the fingers.

Yes, it did rain while I was judging, but only intermittently and some kind person tried to hold an umbrella over me during the showers. Appreciated but not necessary. I was happy to suffer with the exhibitors! In Estonia, class placings are accompanied with the hieroglyphics CQ. This means (I think) ‘Challenge Qualified’ – in any case that is the way it works. First four in each Class are eligible for the Best of Sex Challenge. Now, there is no way I can give Best Dog or Best Bitch awards to beaten dogs even if they all have the right to be in the ring! Trusting to memory (and luck) I moved them all again before pulling out the class winners, thanking the rest and excusing them from the ring. THEN I lined them all up, moved them individually and found my Top Winners. I couldn’t find any explanation for or against this practice although I found it strange, disconcerting even. Each dog received a written critique so a few general comments. Movement was slightly disappointing on the whole but next day, The Modern Basenji - Worldwide - www.modernbasenji.com | 28

Basenji Club of Estonia - Championsip Show 2013 - continued on grass, the same basenjis moved with much freer swinging gait. On the table, construction often convinced me the dog would move with a true basenji gait. This was not always so. Surface makes a huge difference. The athletic track was slightly gritty and could have affected movement. In fact, a smooth plastic sheet was laid out the length of the ring to preserve exhibitors’ knees as they presented their dogs. Quality overall was very high and temperaments were good, I think only one dog displayed ‘nerves’ and certainly none ‘talked back’ as they stood for a critique. I saw absolutely no reason to withhold ‘Excellent’ or (in the case of puppies) ‘Very Promising.’ The future of Estonian basenjis is assured – the quality of the puppies promises that! There were many lovely basenji heads, correct shape with adequate wrinkle. Only a couple of paler eyes. Because of the number of entries, I had been asked to sign invitations to dogs with particularly pleasing attributes to compete later for Best Wrinkle, Best Tail, Best Head, Best Colour, Best Feet and Best Mover. Best Yodeller was open to all, but sadly no ribbon was awarded. The basenjis all kept silent! Handling was okay but when a basenji wants to stop and scratch an ear, I for one (because I do it myself) am quite happy for the handler to stop, return and re-do that section of the triangle or whatever they are in the middle of. I get the impression this is frowned upon in many countries, and judges expect handlers to ‘carry on regardless.’ The few extra seconds make all the difference and, after all, the exhibitor has paid, probably expensively by the time long distance travel is added in, to show off their dog. I know that one car load had pre-booked time to go back to Russia through Customs three weeks earlier, and the best they could reserve was 2:00 am on the Monday. . . Judges for the international show stay at the same ring and the exhibitors move along to another one. This means last thing before going home, juggling for position and moving the tents for the best view of the new ring!

the tent. Poor dog got soaked and preferred sitting down! Viktoria had arranged for a nurse to act as translator for the Russian contingent – for someone unversed in Dogdom, she did a very good job! In the end we all crowded into the tent and the lively discussion continued until the Group judging began. The Group judging is done in a pre-selection ring, where judges can either move the dogs, go over them briefly or both. All the puppies go in to the main ring together, followed by the Juniors, the Brace and the Breeder Teams. Then the adults, Groups 1 to 10. The judge stands by while they are called in one by one, makes a cursory tour of the line-up and then pulls out six or seven pre-selected dogs. The final four are placed backwards. Nail-biting stuff! Handlers may know they are not 4th, or 3rd, but then – 2nd, 1st or unplaced ? And there is a Best Puppy in Show, a Best Junior, etc, right through the Classes! Basenjis did well in the Group on both days – as well as team Tim Spirit’s success on Sunday (and yes, I have made the changes throughout the database although I still call it ‘team’ and that is how it is pronounced!), Farlanders Can Make You Smile went Best Puppy in Show, following (and outdoing) his littermate, Farlanders Can I Be The One, who had taken 4th Best Puppy in Show on Saturday. Two from a smashing litter which is a credit to its breeders, Kerli & Maire Tonurist.

All in all, I had a wonderful time, saw many super basenjis and met and made friends with people from countries I never thought I would visit. That so many basenji people made long journeys to show me their dogs was overwhelming. The internet has shrunk the world but nothing beats meeting actual people! Following basenji judging on the Saturday, I was invited to lead a discussion on various aspects of construction, training, puppy rearing etc. We started off in the dry, but increasingly the rain bucketed down and umbrellas came out. My ‘model’ – a lovely boy basenji – wasn’t too happy standing on a table just under the rim of

I am so lucky to have had such a wonderful opportunity -

BY KYA

Hi out there in ‘Senjiland!! I think summer finally made an appearance toward the very end of spring, but it was very short-lived as it seems fall was suddenly at our backdoor. In my little corner of the huge world not much is going on. I must elaborate on Blue Cat a little bit, who I think has a crush on me. Why else would he scent mark me? Every time the door is open there he is marking me again and again. I decided to stop his infatuation with me once and for all. The next time I slipped by him to go to his living quarters to have a talk with Betty Cat. She flew into a rage, raised her battle flag, let out the most bloodcurdling scream at both me and Blue and came flying at me with teeth and fangs bared. I have never been so terrified in my entire life. I missed the turn back to my quarters and barely escaped at least two razorsharp claws as I raced for my home ground. I do not understand her at all! She thinks nothing of coming to my living quarters and is just as nice as can be. I think she must be spying on Blue to see what the two of us could possibly be doing. Then she saunters back to her quarters as nice as you please. Trust me! I will never venture into her world again. However, Blue still continues to scent mark me. Why else would he rub all over me? Another one of those ‘fun things’ took place again. I was so happy when mom said it was too hot to go because there is no air conditioning in the ‘fun’ building. I was a little disappointed because I like to visit with all my friends, at least the ones that go. Griffin usually goes. He is a good guy. Mom tells me he is an Irish water spaniel. I have never seen him wet so I have no idea where the water is. But he is an okay guy. He is also in my therapy group. People

like to run their fingers through his coat. Mom says it is soft and fluffy. To me it looks like mini-dread locks. I guess that is the word that fits his soft fluffy coat best. Now, let me tell you about Holly. She is one super girl, a little headstrong at times, and mom says she has ‘selective hearing’ a lot of the time. I don’t know if that means she can’t hear very well or she doesn’t want to hear. She is the type who wants to always be first on therapy visits. She has annoyed me more than once with her ‘me first’ attitude. I’ve heard mom tell Holly’s mom on several occasions that she needs to run Holly around the block before she does therapy to burn up some of her ‘me first’ attitude. Obviously one or both, Holly and her mom, failed to abide by the rules, and they dropped out. I miss Holly terribly. Even if she is a little hyper, well a lot hyper, she was a good member of the team. Everybody liked Holly and asks about her often. I think mom will see if Holly wants to come back and be part of our little group. Mom and I recently took about a mile walk, but I was so bored. I conveyed to mom that I thought it was time for some new uncharted area to explore. So, if you all will say a little prayer just for me I would appreciate it very much. The same old path is not much fun anymore. Mom just told me where and when the next National Specialty is, and I told her I would work ever so hard to make her proud of me IF she takes me. What am I saying, of course, she will take me? How could she possibly go without me??? Until next time remember this: The fellow who is up and doing is never down and out. May all your dreams be happy and all your trails an adventure.h

THE ROAD TO PHOENIX

by Wanda Pooley

THE TRIP - ONE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE or Why Tombstone Is In The Middle of A Show Report

When I was invited to judge the Basenji Fanciers of Greater Phoenix specialty in early November, I thought, “What a lovely time to travel to Arizona.”

P

hoenix is a mere 930 miles from Kerrville, TX. While a road trip from south central Texas to Phoenix, Arizona might not sound appealing to some -- what with the wide-open spaces, backdrop of mountains, and deserts stretching across three states -- the drive offered an opportunity to see more of the country. I have always enjoyed chatting with the local folks in the towns across America. Many times I come away feeling richer from those brief glimpses into different lives. Goldie (my van) and I set out very early Friday morning. Over half of the trip was spent just driving through Texas. Once I crossed into New Mexico, I dutifully dialed my watch back one hour to match the Mountain Daylight Savings Time zone. A brief note about time zones -most important because my trip fell on the weekend that daylight savings time ends. This occurs twice a year in the US. Returning to standard time for the winter months means all the states turn their clocks back by one hour on Sunday at 2:00 a.m. (or so I thought.) After racking up 760 miles, I stopped for the night in Benson, AZ, about 40 miles east of Tucson. Depositing my bag in the motel room, I set off in search of a good, local restaurant and was surprised when I spotted a sign stating the famous town of Tombstone was only 26 miles to the south. Since only three hours or so of driving the next day separated me from Phoenix, I decided to make a side trip and enjoy the rich history of this old western town. That evening I set my alarm for 6:30 the next morning. This would give me time for a leisurely shower and breakfast at a local cafe before taking the 26-mile trek to Tombstone. According to tourist information I had gleaned through Google, the shops and attractions began opening about 9:00 a.m. Perfect! Saturday morning as I sat in a quiet cafe on main street enjoying a cup of coffee while waiting for my breakfast, I pulled out my iPhone and started scrolling through the news. That’s when I noticed that the time display was wrong. How strange! It was off by an hour. I knew I had changed

BASENJI FANCIERS OF GREATER PHOENIX my watch to the Mountain time zone and the end of nationwide Daylight Savings would not occur until Sunday. I looked around the room in search of a clock, and when I spied one, it, too, was wrong! I asked the one other customer and the waitress for the time. They both glanced at the clock and then back to me as if to say, “Awwww, sweetie, can’t you tell time?” And that’s when I discovered that Arizona does not recognize Daylight Savings Time; it stays on Standard Time all year round. What I thought was 8:00 a.m. was really 7:00 a.m.! This, of course, explained why the streets of Benson on this sunny Saturday morning were so quiet. People were still sleeping! Now what? It’s hard for me to sit around and wait for time to pass so I decided to just make the best of it. I finished my breakfast and drove the lonely stretch of highway to Tombstone. This is where it gets eerie. I had the whole town to myself -- not a tourist to be seen! I stood alone on the infamous Boot Hill; I walked down the middle of main street snapping pictures; I peered through the stable windows into OK Corral. I certainly didn’t have to be concerned about people getting in my way. It was so quiet. At last, towards 9:00 a.m. (Arizona time) shop keepers, dressed in Period clothing, began arriving,. These folks were most pleased to tell me how much they loved their jobs recreating history for visitors. When I returned to the parking lot, parked next to Goldie was pickup truck. As I sat in the van, emailing pictures to my husband, Fred, I heard the fellow in the truck step out. He was strapping on a gun belt sporting a pair of Colt 45 pistols. I took his picture while he told me about how he is part of a reenactment of the famous shootout. I headed north out of a still very quiet Tombstone about

BASENJI FANCIERS OF GREATER PHOENIX SPECIALTY - MY COMMENTS midmorning and slowly made my way to Phoenix. The next day I entered the Windemere Convention Center, on time, for an afternoon of doing something else I thoroughly enjoy - getting a good basenji fix!

ON WITH THE SHOW

IT

was an honor to judge this specialty and many thanks to the Club for giving me this privilege. I was especially happy to discover my ring steward was Carmella Troisi-Hoerr. She is a hoot and very much the master of her domain. When I look at basenjis, color and markings do not concern me. I am interested in good breed type and functionality. A basenji should be a balanced, effortlessly moving dog. Some people confuse speed with proper side gait when these are not the same at all. A basenji should move easily at any speed, and the dog should appear to be able to maintain this speed over a long distance. I do feel some dogs were at a disadvantage with the limited ring size and floor surface and would have moved more freely in a larger space. However, this situation is something all of us cope with when we show our dogs. Clubs have to make the best use of the facilities they have available to them. Winners Dog and Reserve Winners Dog were from the BredBy Exhibitor class. This is always a tough class to judge, as it should be. These two lovely males, while different, were both very nice examples of the breed. Winners Dog, Starfyre’s Action Jaxson, was fluid moving, had a good pelvic shelf, a pleasing head, and overall nice breed type. He also went on to become Best of Winners. The breeder confided that this youngster finished his championship with this win, and I am not surprised.

had good bend of stifle leading down to short hocks. The Select Dog, GCH CH Keyline Archer of Desoleil, was a very striking black/white fellow with a gleaming coat and a lovely masculine head. This dog really pushed the BOB winner. I do feel this dog was somewhat at a disadvantage because of the size of the ring. The Select Bitch, GCH CH Sundiata Pirouette, was an elegant feminine bitch with a pleasing head and beautiful dark red coat. My Awards of Merit were all strong breed specimens -- a striking tri male, CH Tarsha’s Ironwood Carver and two still fluid moving veterans - CH Tarsha’s Dreamcatcher (D) (turning 10) and CH Farouk Joy-Us Furaha Nyekundu (B) (almost 12). To me, there is nothing more exciting than witnessing the longevity of our breed. While these veterans might have appeared bored on the exam table, they excelled once they put their feet on the ground! One memorable note: During picture taking, when the owner of the AOM veteran bitch posed her dog on the table, I asked who this bitch was. The owner, Arnieta Kurtz, who, at one time, lived near me in Illinois, said, “This is Zelda.” I exclaimed, “Oh my goodness! No wonder I liked her!” Back in the day, Zelda and Emily, a young bitch I was showing at the same time, constantly butted heads (figuratively speaking, of course) in the ring. Both these youngsters did their share of winning, but when Zelda bested Emily I could never be unhappy as she was such a deserving competitor. Many of us met that evening at Garcia’s. What a fun time! I so enjoyed talking to old friends and meeting new ones. Now that the show was over, I could leave the confines of a sterile motel room to enjoy a night’s stay with Flo Havens. Flo is a font of information about basenjis and has one of the largest and best collections of memorabilia I have ever seen -- and I have been in a lot of basenji folks’ homes.

The Winners Bitch competition came down to two very lovely females. The nod went to the winner of the Puppy Bitch 9-12 mo. class, Nowata I Am Amazing. She was a pleasing bitch with balanced movement. I liked her head, and while some might be bothered by the remnants of masking, I wasn’t. The bitch’s skull portions were correct, she had a nicely cushioned muzzle, and dark, almond shaped eyes with plenty of brow, something that seems to be disappearing on basenji heads. This bitch went on to earn a top spot as Best of Opposite Sex. What a lovely line up of Champions in the breed class! It was challenging to settle on my Best of Breed winner because there were several deserving basenjis in the ring, and I wished I could have awarded more than one high honor for the day.

Enormous bales of cotton stacked along the edge of fields. Bales are either round, like these, or rectangular in shape. That’s a lot of T-shirts!

I selected my Best of Breed winner, GCH CH Illusion’s Stairway to Heaven, for his good breed type -- from head to toe-- and sound movement. Beautiful head piece with nice dark eyes, pliant skin which results in plenty of wrinkle, and proper muzzle cushion. The dog was very close to square, blended nicely from the top of his head to the end of his loin, ending with a proper pelvic shelf. He

Even though I got a bit of a late start on Monday, I decided to travel east on some back highways of Arizona. I had no idea this state produced so much cotton. At midnight, Goldie and I touched down in my driveway. Wonderful trip; good folks, and plenty to see and do! h
