onfinement, home delivery, six feet, social distancing, masks, washing hands, and ultimately pulling my hair out… that’s how this year started. Social distancing was, by far, the hardest part for me. I am a hugger. I love people and I love to show it. I don’t often hug random strangers, but it definitely has happened from time to time. I try to watch for social cues, because so many people do not like to be touched, but needless to say, that skill has gone undeveloped this year because there was little socialization to take cues from. After record high reports of depression started to sweep the world within the first

few months, I thought often that maybe it had to do with the fact that people were no longer holding hands or hugging one another. Maybe, it was directly related to people not being connected with others. Along with the pandemic, editing came to a sudden standstill and printers all around the country were unexpectedly shut down. Photoshoots had to be rearranged for outdoors instead of in-studio. While it was tough to rearrange and was often uncomfortable making some of the changes, it also came with longer evenings on the back porch visiting with my husband, Larry and more outdoor activities with friends and family.

I was forced to find creative ways to socialize. I found myself reaching out to those that lived alone or were at high risk of isolation. I started sending cards and letters again. My normal rush to do all the things I did in my daily life was abruptly halted and time became my most valuable commodity. I sadly realized that reading had been supplanted into my quick-break-time retreat, instead of the occasion in itself that it used to be. Through this time, sitting on a park bench and reading a book quickly inched its way back to the top of my mustdo list. Most importantly, my devotion time with God increased. Reading through my prayer list turned into holding onto each person’s name and praying over their wellness of mind and financial protection a little more than before. I asked God what He wanted me to do and I tried much harder to follow. When stress and discord tried to seep its way into our lives, my husband and I came up with several God-inspired projects that we wanted to complete and we set about doing the work. I think life will never be the same as it was before. I know my life won’t be. I certainly won’t return to rushing about doing any work that isn’t significantly meaningful. I’ve never been one to involve myself in arguing over politics or religion, but now Larry and I make sure to avoid even reading or watching the conflicts. I want to take the gift of time that I’ve misused so often in the past, use it wisely and treasure every step forward. I wish you all well,

rugstore brands are doing better than ever. We have access to high quality makeup like never before! Brands like NYX Professional Makeup and e.l.f. Cosmetics never cease to impress. But, we think you should save up and spend a little extra here and there to supplement your makeup bag (or makeup drawers if you’re like us). Treat yourself to luxury items—even if you’re on a budget!

In case you missed it, Kat Von D Beauty has completely rebranded and is under new ownership. The brand was renamed to KVD Vegan Beauty, and Kat Von D is no longer involved in the company. The entire makeup line is vegan and cruelty-free. Right now I’m living for the KVD Vegan Beauty Go Big or Go Home Volumizing Mascara. It’s super voluminous formula has 24-hour wear, and is smudge-free and flake-free!

Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Polish is high shine and not sticky at all. Vitamins A and E provide long-lasting moisture to your lips as the gloss tingles and plumps.

The Melt Cosmetics Gemini Eyeshadow Palette features 10 earthy tones—8 matte and 2 metallic. The color payoff is incredible, and the shades are easy to blend. Whether you’re going for a natural look or a dark, smokey eye, this palette’s colors will work for you!

For something you can grab at any drugstore, the new e.l.f. Cosmetics Poreless Putty Primer is a wild, permanent addition to my makeup kit! My trick is to apply setting spray after your primer, before applying your foundation! Speaking of setting spray...

The NYX Professional Makeup Radiant Finish Setting Spray go-to now! It has an amazing hold and a slight shimmer that keeps you looking dewy and fresh all day. Having a good balance of dewy and still being beat is important in this muggy, wet Louisiana heat! And if you want the falsies look but hate glue or don’t know how to apply false lashes, Wet n Wild introduced their Lash-o-Matic Mascara and it is stellar! It’s by no means waterproof, but it’s easy to remove at the end of a day. This mascara blew my mind! I wasn’t expecting the drastic results. I recommend buying the Lash-oMatic Fiber Extension Kit.

nother outing with Nicole’s Closet! I had the pleasure of dressing Ms. Emma James. Emma is a model and college student who was looking to add some vintage designer pieces with a rock star edge to her closet. Say no more! When I had finally decided on the three looks I felt were most rockin’, it was time to roll. After all was said and done, I chose the pieces that would complement her natural beauty, yet still provide that “edge” she wanted with her look. The goal was also to build all of these looks around a pair of Levi’s jeans ($20 from Amazon), which we did. This was such a fun shoot and Emma loved these styles! While many of these were designer clothes, keep in mind you don’t need to spend a fortune to rock a few new pieces!

For our first look, I chose a vintage Moschino “My Little Pony” SS18 capsule collection baseball shirt ($125 from eBay) paired with Moschino “Barbie” SS15 capsule collection jeans ($100 from eBay), with pink piping down the side and a custom Moschino logo on the back, with generic leopard tennis shoes ($12 from Amazon). To finish the look, we added a Marc Jacobs bag ($195 from Amazon) with bright orange cut-out accents and Marc Jacobs crystal earrings ($30 from Amazon).

The next look we did included a pair of Levi’s jeans ($20 from Amazon), a rare vintage hot pink runway edition jacket by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton ($295 from The Real Real) with Stephen Sprouse graphics over a multi-colored Nirvana t-shirt ($12 from Target). For the shoes, we chose from the same Louis Vuitton collection, a pair of Stephen Sprouse hot pink rose shoes by Marc Jacobs ($395 from The Real Real). Earrings and bracelet ($85 from The Real Real) by Marc Jacobs and choker by Rebecca Minkoff ($12 from eBay).

Our final look, which was Emma’s favorite, was built around our good ole $20 pair of Levi’s jeans. We paired a Michael Kors denim jacket ($39.99 from T.J. A pair of leopard Sam Edelman flats ($14 from Amazon) finished off the look with the same Marc Jacobs crystal earrings.

Quarantine Connection Alexis Jester

L

ouisiana is an unusually touchy state. We are known for being friendly and for never knowing a stranger. We shake hands as a sign of respect and also a way of expressing endearment. We hug hello AND goodbye-we even hug as an introduction. How many times have you heard, “Nice to meet you! I’m a hugger.” Of course, there are always people who appreciate personal space and no physical contact, but as a state we are VERY touchy. We put a hand on a shoulder or arm to show engagement in conversation. We dap each other down and we kiss each other on the cheeks. At the very least, we smile at each other. All of those ways to express our love and acceptance of each other have been stripped away. That human connection is a huge part of our day-to-day here. Without it, a lot of people have been left feeling disconnected and isolated. Not being able to physically be present with

friends and family during such a stressful time can tear away at your mental health. We have more access now to communicate globally than we have ever had. We have video calls, instant messaging, and social media. But with everything going on in our world, social media can even cause more stress. So how can we stay connected to the people we love...in a meaningful way? My mom has taken to sending out hand-written cards again, just to show that she cares and is thinking about her loved ones. They have something tangible to hold on to! I dropped coffee off for some friends who were quarantined, and left it in their yard then ran back to my car to wave. You can even just join a video call with some friends during your day-today tasks. It’s so important we keep our interpersonal connections strong in this time that feels so lonely.

find your streng th Brandi LeBlanc, CPT

S

trength. What does it mean to be strong? What does strength mean to you? Where does strength come from? This is what I want you to think about today. What comes to your mind when you think of the word strength? When we Google the word strength, it is defined as: 1. the quality or state of being physically strong. 2. the capacity of an object or substance to withstand great force or pressure. Google also provides similar words. Some of those include: power, muscle, muscularity, sturdiness, robustness, toughness, vigor, force, might. Many of us think of physical strength when we see or hear this word. We think of a strong man or woman who can lift heavy weights, right? In fact, that’s the first definition. How do you get “strength” like this? One might say you could lift weights to gain strength. You exercise. Yes, physically those things would be ways to get physical strength. But when I think of strength, it is way more than physical. Look at some of the words associated with the first meaning: “power,” “robustness,” “toughness,” “might.” Those words have a deeper meaning to me. Power...how to do you receive power?

Power comes from within. It doesn’t come from lifting a weight. Power is a force. Force causes power. Neither does robustness come from lifting a weight. Robustness is “the ability to withstand or overcome adverse conditions or rigorous testing.” In order to gain this ability to withstand or overcome, you have to go through experiences to receive this ability… you have to be “tested.” In bodybuilding, we physically push our muscles past the point of our limitations to basically tear and break our muscles down so they can rebuild and grow back stronger so that we can grow more, lift more, and grow some more. The same goes for inner strength...which is what I want to focus on. We have to be “tested” in order to gain the ability to withstand and overcome. In life, don’t we all have moments that test us? When I look back at my past, so many things tore me down mentally. There were moments I never thought I would get through. But I did. And those moments helped me find my strength. I overcame those moments. Those moments gave me the ability to rebuild myself so that when something new hit my life, I would be able to withstand the blow and overcome that too. Those moments made me tough. What about you? Can you think of

moments in your life when you thought you would never get through? When I am training a client and putting them through a very vigorous and tough workout, many tell me after the workout that they didn’t know they could do it, and my response is, “But did you die?” I push them past the limitations that they put on themselves so they can see that they have more strength than they realize. The same goes for things we go through in life. Moments we think we can not possibly live through. We do it. We survive, and we don’t die. It’s actually an ability that we gained through that trial. That, my friend, is power. That is strength. Have you ever looked at the trials of someone you know and said, “Wow! That is a strong woman to be able to handle this...I would never be able to handle that the way she is.”? That is how I want you to look at yourself. Today, take a moment just to reflect. Reflect on trials you have faced and instead of thinking about how it broke you or tore you down, focus on what you gained through that trial. Be thankful for the trial, because you gained power, robustness, and might through it. You gained strength that no one else gained. Strength that was meant for only YOU to gain. This is where physical strength meets inner strength. Find the strength within you today. MODERN GRACE

Charcuterie is the French term for preparing of cured meat products, but the definition has been altered to the preparing of meats on a platter with cheeses. Still, it keeps evolving. Vegetableonly options are also called charcuterie platters or boards, even though they have no meat on them at all.

MODERN GRACE

n 2016, I applied to a position for the Department of Homeland Security. Applying for any job, it can be a difficult journey, more so with a government position where competition and selection processes are even tighter. Nervous but hopeful, I felt I had a 50/50 chance. When I applied for this job, I was a Department of Defense contractor. With excitement, I spoke to a few people closest to me about this, “If I get this job, then x, y, z can happen,” meaning I knew if I got my foot in the door, I had the opportunity to advance quickly, especially with all the experience I had under my belt. I did feel that I had nowhere to go but up—the sky was the limit. Months after applying and waiting, I finally got that email we all long for: “Congratulations, you have been selected.” After I received the job, I worked very hard to find my way around and learn the operations of Cyber Security at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). During that time, I made new friends and the team I was on was very much a familylike environment, or at least it felt this way compared to my previous employer. People were friendly and invited me to coffee and lunches. There was a group of us who looked out for one another. It was nice. After working for DHS for a little over a year, there was an opportunity for me to apply for a position managing another team. This would mean a significant promotion with a substantial pay increase. It also allowed me the opportunity to get my clearance upgraded to Top-Secret, which was a big deal to me. After applying for the position, with the encouragement of leadership, I later discovered that one of the

applicants I was going up against was one of the people from my “work family” that I mentioned earlier. Out of respect for his privacy, I will refer to him as “Applicant A,” because I don’t want to use his real name. After almost backing out form applying, simply because I felt awkward going up against this guy, however decided that it was the right move. There were many things that happened leading up to this interview. The most significant though, is what happened after the interview. I had prepared a presentation for a panel of executives that I didn’t know, nor did they know me. This was how our boss wanted the interview conducted so that everyone knew they had a fair chance. A few weeks went by, and I found out that I had been selected for the position. I was so excited for the opportunity. By the next week, everything in my office changed. Applicant A filed a formal complaint against me, and it said that I was favored because I was a white female who was a friend with someone in the leadership chain. But this friend had no say or impact on the panel whatsoever and was not even a part of the hiring process. My “work family,” all stopped talking to me and I was then excluded from their lunches and trips to grab a coffee. My being selected for the promotion was one win that I wanted to celebrate, yet it came with negativity and jealousy that I wasn’t prepared for. I had no idea that losing people could potentially be a repercussion of being selected for a promotional opportunity. I experienced outside chatter in the background happening from people that I expected to be happy for me. This was

such an accomplishment for me, one that I had worked extremely hard for, and it was being sullied from unexpected sources. Instead of feeling celebratory, I felt defeated. Have you ever had something similar happen? Where you just feel defeated simply because of the words that come out of another’s mouth? Life is hard enough, but we get to choose everyday the words we speak. It is so important to speak life into people and encourage and love people. After all, we don’t know what is going on in the background. During this time, as if it was not difficult enough, I also had the challenges of a longdistance marriage, and my teenage son would face a very challenging freshman year of high school. There were days when I literally would go into my office, collapse at my desk and break down in tears or go home and collapse on my couch in tears. Not because of any one thing, but because the totality of everything was weighing on me. I was emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted. This was a very difficult time in my life… and it also became one of the best times of my life. I had one best friend who would listen to me cry during my lengthy commute almost daily. She would pray with me, encourage me, and extend love and grace to me like I could not ever have imagined before. Being accepted, counseled, and loved by another. She often paused her own busy day to be available for me. In that, I learned that we are not meant to do this thing alone. We are meant to carry each other’s burdens. I remember starting out nearly every call

with: “I don’t think I can do this today.” She would either quickly get me in check, or promptly pray. She would speak blessings over me. What I would come to realize is, not only were other people not speaking blessings over my life, I was not speaking blessings over my own life. I was speaking defeat. Not intentionally, of course. Because really, which one of us has the intention of speaking negative things over ourselves? Not many. Statements like, “I don’t think I can do this,” or “I can’t take anything else,” are words that empower us to fail. Of course, I could do this—I had done it every day up until all of this happened. I survived previously without the group of friends. I survived also without the people that I thought genuinely loved me and would be happy for me and the promotion. And, I had survived before my long-distance marriage challenges, and I certainly had survived prior to my son going through some tough love teenage moments. I could do it again. This season and journey taught me so much. I learned a lot about my mental attitude. I learned a lot about never being the type of person who would turn their back on someone else. I learned that there are people who truly will cheer my successes and share in my increase. I want to be that person for others, too. Ultimately, I learned that I am my biggest obstacle to triumph and happiness. As difficult as it was, I met this quote: “One day you will look back on this season and know that you are truly blessed, and not because things were perfect, but because you found perfect grace in the worst of it.” —Morgan Harper Nichols MODERN GRACE

be still Kristi Williams Fontenot

I

hear the words “Be still, and know that I am God” ringing in my heart and my mind. God is saying slow your mind, clear your thoughts. Rest in Me and I will rest in you. All God wants of us it to be still and to talk to Him. To be in His presence. When we shift our focus from things of this world, to the things of Him, He will give us the peace that our soul longs for. The peace that can only be found in Him. But why does God’s word tell us to be still? I believe it's because in times like these that is the only way we can truly hear Him. In times like these as we draw closer to Him, He will draw closer to us and fill us with His peace. I don’t know about you, but between the news and social media it tends to absorb my time, and if I’m not careful it can consume my every thought. The devil uses these things to distract us. To place fear, and doubt, and worry in us. When we choose to quiet our souls and just be still in God’s presence, He is able to bring rest and peace to our hearts and our souls. God’s word tells us “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and

your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7. When we come into Gods presence and completely submit ourselves to Him, He will guard our hearts and minds from the things the devil tries to use to bring fear to us. Right now, the world is gripped by fear. We go to the store and the shelves are empty. We watch as the world is worried about getting milk, and meat, and bread. But God’s word tells us that there is only one bread that we truly need and it’s the bread of life. Jesus IS the bread of life! All we must do is submit ourselves Him and He will fill us with His Holy Spirit. Jesus met the needs of 5,000 by feeding them with only 5 loaves of bread and 3 fish. Just imagine what he will do for us if we come to Him. Our greatest need isn’t the bread of this world. Our greatest need is the spiritual bread that only Jesus can give. My prayer is that we do not put our trust in the things of this world. Instead, our trust should be in only one, Jesus Christ. As we still our hearts and our minds He will fill us with the only life-giving peace that we need. When we call on the name of the Lord, He will be there. “He says, Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalms 46:10

Financial Mavens, We are living through a tumultuous time. A time that is unknown to some and familiar to others. The world around you has slowed down drastically, like a train coming to its next stop, for you to think. Think about your financial position in the world. Are you ahead of the curve or behind it? season for growth and building financial independence. You have to choose the vision. Not any old vision...the vision given by the most high. An alignment has to happen when you activate your calling, your passion, or your dream. We underestimate the power of God’s time on the earth. Think about the power of a total eclipse— the sun, moon, and earth align. Most folks are in awe. It is majestic. There is a shift. We have to trust Him with all things, including time and money. These go hand in hand. Start a business! Go for the promotion! Yes, I am talking to you! Seize this opportunity to be in alignment with this time. This may serve as confirmation or validation. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 Start the business of your dreams. If your job does not value skill that you have mastered, start a business, or in modernday vernacular, a side-hustle! To start a business is easy; a retail business or a consulting business. From making candles to designing apparel to teaching a skill or tutoring online. We all have gift. All you have to do is market it. Make it available on social media platforms. The platform options are limitless for an online business. There is Esty, Shopify, Squarespace, Volusion, Weebly, etc. A few clicks and you’re done. Teach a skill or a craft through various platforms such as: Teachable, Thinkific, or Udemy. You have a talent. Sell it! “And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills, to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.” Exodus

31:3-5 New International Version Go for the promotion! During the stayat-home order, time and thought is of the essence. You may have felt hopeless about your job and the day of returning. A sense of repetitiveness and a cycle with no end. You start to question yourself. Is this the job for me? What was I was called to do? I have a dream. In those feelings, you have to channel the energy to change. Now is the time. Go back to your vision-board. There is a dream job pinned there. Create a plan of action to get to the next destination. You can do this! Just step out on faith. Find the place that makes you happy. We are fearfully and wonderfully made with gifts and talents. Go for it! “To one he gave five talents…His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.” Matthew 24:15-23 No one can fathom the end of a thing, if the beginning never began. “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.” One must enjoy the fruits of their labor. “Everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it.” Ecclesiastes 3:12-14 This article is meant to empower you to build financial independence.
