F ROM TH E E DITOR

W

hen I posted my end of the year blog I realized much of what I said really reflected the magazine overall, so I decided to include parts of it in my editor’s letter. Not long after my first book release in June of 2017, I started planning a special surprise for my husband. I knew we’d have a lot going on in 2018, however, I also knew we couldn’t wait any longer, this was the year. So I started planning. When I first married my husband in 1991 we had a beautiful, traditional church wedding. Etiquette would only allow me to wear an off-white dress, because I wasn’t a virgin and on top of that I was pregnant...in The South. It

didn’t really didn’t bother me, until I told Larry. He thought that if etiquette makes people feel bad about themselves, or dirty, then it should be tossed out the window (not his exact words). However, still, I wasn’t allowed to get a white dress. Yes, for those of you that are asking, I was an adult, 21 years old, but in my family those decisions weren’t left up to me. (Read more about that in my blog.) Needless to say, I found a beautiful off-white satin gown and had a lovely wedding. Flash forward twenty years, my husband started joking about going to Vegas and getting remarried by an Elvis impersonator, to which I would joke that I might even wear a white dress, regardless the time of year (there is a triple meaning in that, because I wear black most days, I didn’t get my white wedding dress originally, also because you weren’t/aren’t supposed to wear white clothing in cooler seasons, it should be off-white – except for a wedding dress, if you were virginal – and no white shoes after labor day… **PAUSE** EXACTLY! Phew!) Through the following years the idea of doing it “OUR WAY” went from being a quirky thought, to earning a top slot on my bucket list. I’ve learned that everyone is full of advice for you, but it’s you who must live it. I’ve also learned that some people devalue things that are important to you, but doing those things don’t have to be important to other people. None of us have to follow the same plan as everyone else. We can be as different as we really are. There are so many rules, even simple etiquette, that tell us how we are supposed to live. In my family, we were raised to value

etiquette. Rules of society are important. It teaches us more than just how to set a simple place setting (included in the food section), it also teaches us respect for others, manners and the proper way to behave in certain surroundings. Boundaries if you will. However, the older I get the more I realize many of those rules do indeed make people feel bad about themselves. At the very least it can make someone feel uncomfortable; at its worst, unworthy. While etiquette is important to me, so is grace, Southern Grace and Godly Grace. Sometimes when we value rules more than people, it is almost a lack of both Graces. Sometimes, people confuse the expectations of others as rules. And I’ve learned, sometimes, when we value etiquette or other’s expectations over our own voices, we devalue ourselves. So last year, with the BEST ELVIS IMPERSONATOR EVER (and top Saints Super fan), Randy Bonneval, I wore that white dress, with that black jacket, surrounded by many of our friends and family, and renewed my vows to my incredible husband! (full story and album in my blog) Going into this New Year I’m reflecting like most everyone else. The ceremony, while it was fun, meant much more than just being silly or whimsical. It also represented something serious and fulfilling: a new start, changing, overcoming, and living life. …And doing it our way. Sincerely,

BLUE EYES Contrasting shades make your eyes pop, so brown or gold eyeliner would make your blue eyes appear even bluer. For a sharper, more defined contrast go for a copper liner, the almost orange metallic shade will electricity your eyes. 14

|

MODERN GRACE

HAZEL EYES Enhance the green in hazel eyes by using red and gold undertones. Use warm browns and navy to enhance the rich brown color. For a courageous look opt for purple to enhance the green tones or bronze shade to augment the brown.

BROWN EYES For a natural slightly contrasting look that will highlight the warmth of your eyes you could opt for a navy liner. For a bolder look go with purple or grey. Purple has a sharper contrast that will make your eyes pop and the cool toned grey against the warm brown makes your brown irises glow.

GREEN EYES Try eyeliners with reddish undertones since red compliments green on the color wheel. Plum and brown shades are your best friend. For a richer shade try a bronze, the shimmer in the bronze will set your green eyes ablaze. MODERN GRACE

The cleanser is non-comedogenic and 99% natural. it’s a thick cream cleanser that doesn’t lather—it’s perfect for people like me with really dry, eczema-prone skin. The best thing about it though is the price point. I bought it from Ulta Beauty for only seven dollars.

It has no artificial colors, and is not tested on animals nor does it contain any animal byproducts. I love this body wash!! It claims to deep cleanse the skin and purify the pores, and it absolutely does! After using it consistently for a week I saw my skin texture improve, my body acne decrease, and even the hyperpigmentation that I have on my body diminished revealing clearer and brighter skin. The tea tree smell is so refreshing and invigorating, it makes your skin tingle! Juvia’s Place Afrique Palette This 12-pan eyeshadow palette retails for only $20 and is worth every penny. Juvia’s Place is known for its large pan sizes, so you get a lot of eyeshadow on top of it being an amazing quality. Mardi Gras, Best Dressed DĂŠja Jones

O

nly the experienced Mardi Gras participant may be familiar with the lavish, yet mysterious dualities of the carnival season. As a local, even I enlisted assistance from Mardi Gras Costume Museum Owner, Carl Mack, to help give us a deeper understanding. Traditions as old as two hundred years connect locals to their ancestors and to each other. Preservation of these traditions is vital to the state’s natives and economy.

MODERN GRACE

|

25

Post-Emancipation, Mardi Gras Indians or “Masking Indians” began creating Native American style “suits” to pay homage to tribes who sheltered and taught Black people methods of healing and cultivating the land. Over time, suits began to tower seven feet tall including a feathered suit, headdress, and murallike motif beaded by the Chief himself. Chiefs go feather-to-feather to decide “who has the prettiest suit?” but on past, Mardi Gras mornings tribes sought to settle old scores. To rid bad spirits and contingencies, Creole women of voodoo would dress in white with tall headdresses, while skeleton suited men, known as the Skull and Bones Gang, prayed and chanted through Crescent city's historically Black neighborhoods. Other traditions date back to Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Mack explained, the 1740s governor, Marquis de Vaudreuil constructed “social balls,” which is the same structure we use for Mardi Gras Balls today. Debutantes (female) are presented, in wedding-ready white gowns, to waltz with fellow male

26

|

debutants. The Royal Couple, would glide across the floor in what Mack calls, “wearable pieces of machinery”: an elaborate neckband coined a "mantis collar,” a long train depicting the year's theme, a harness to support all their bells and whistles, and glitter everywhere. The King acted as the facilitator, the Queen smiled, waved, and wore all white up until the 20th century. She symbolized the idealistic Southern bell as an example for all young Southern girls. The glamorous spectacle exalted the traditional values of a Southern aristocratic social ladder. Many know Mardi Gras (French for “Fat Tuesday”) as the last day of celebration before the spiritual commitments of Lent, which is a sacred time of fasting and repentance leading up to Easter. To some, it is only means forty days of fried fish on Fridays at local schools and churches. No matter what your reason, or what you wear, Mardi Gras is a time where communities of Louisiana come together to the look and feel like the most brilliant version of themselves.

set (and better yet, achieve) your goals

T

he New Year is a perfect time for us to consider what we would like to achieve in the coming year. Whatever your personal goals may be, I would love to share with you my favorite process of setting and achieving goals. It involves answering four simple questions and using the answers to those questions in developing a plan of action. Let’s begin, shall we? First, what is it that you would like to achieve? Try your best to be specific. For example, “I would like to lose ten pounds” will be more practical than “I would like to lose weight.” Second, where are we now? It’s important to choose a reliable metric to let us know if what we're doing is working or if we need to try something else. Let’s say that we stick with our previous example of losing ten pounds

and decide to use our body weight as a metric of progress. We can recheck it every week or so to see if whatever we have been doing over the course of the previous week has moved us closer to our goal. If so, awesome! Let’s keep doing it. If not, let’s re-evaluate our approach and see if what we can do to have a better assessment next time. Third, what needs to change in order for us to reach our goals? This is where our game plan comes together. Carefully consider what our biggest obstacles are likely to be and how we can keep them from working against us. In our weight loss, as an example, let’s say that we have a family member that is reluctant to adopt the nutritional habits that will be necessary to reach our goals. The most practical course of action may be to find a group of supportive people with goals similar to ours that can provide the

T.J. Bruner

support that we may not be receiving at home. Finally, what will it mean for you if you achieve this goal? Really put some thought into this step because if your motive for pursuing your goals is clearly defined, you can move mountains. If it isn’t, you will be much more likely to fall back into previously existing habits when the glitter of your resolution begins to fade. So to recap! 1. What would we like to achieve? 2. Where are we now? 3. What needs to change? 4. What will what will it mean to me to achieve this goal? If we can apply these principles towards our goals, I know that we can be successful in whatever it is that we decide to accomplish this year. Please let us know how you do and best of luck! f inding your home gym T.J. Bruner

T

his is a time when a lot of us are looking for a new gym to join, and that's wonderful. Finding the perfect gym can be a challenge if you aren't exactly sure what you're looking for so I would love to offer some advice to help make this process as simple as possible for you. After working in gyms for the past several years, I feel confident that the number one factor that will help to determine your likelihood of success is your gym's culture. If possible, it can often be helpful to take time to visit a gym that you may be considering so that you can experience the gym's unique atmosphere for yourself. It can be rather difficult to picture the inside of a gym if you're simply price shopping online or over the phone. Consider what you feel that you personally need from your gym in order to be successful in the pursuit of your goals.

Do you feel that you need a nurturing environment in which you can feel comfortable? How about a gym with a culture of friendly competition? Or maybe one with a helpful staff that is well-educated in your specific needs? Do you like a big gym with a lot of people, or a smaller gym with a smaller and more closely knit group of members? Of course, price and convenience are also both worthy of consideration, and many people are probably perfectly happy with one or both of these criteria being met. However, I truly believe that for most of us, if you don't enjoy your time spent at your gym, then you simply aren't likely to use it for very long, regardless of how conveniently located or inexpensive it is. So to put it simply, find a gym that makes you feel at home, whatever that may mean for you. Happy New Year and happy hunting!

Never Forget a Simple Place Setting

Here’s how to always remember a simple place setting. • LEFT has four (4) letters in it, so does FORK; so your fork goes on the left side of the plate. • RIGHT has five (5) letters in it, so do KNIFE and SPOON; they go on the right side of the plate. • In alphabetical order = fork, knife, spoon. • The sharp side of the knife faces the plate, so that when one reaches for their spoon they won’t risk cutting themselves by accident. • Glasses go to the top right of the plate as most people are right handed. It’s that SIMPLE!! MODERN GRACE

Mardi Gras Cajun Pasta • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 green pepper 1 red pepper Kayla Morgan 1 yellow pepper /aggresive_arugula 1 onion 10 – 12 mushrooms 2-3 cloves of garlic 1-2 packages of vegan chik’n (I used Light Life, but you can use Gardein, Beyond Meat, or Morning Star) 2-3 cups of soy milk ¼ cup unbleached flour 3 Tbsp of nutritional yeast flakes Cajun seasoning or your own blend (I did paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, minced onion, cayenne, salt, pepper, oregano and a few dashes of crystal hot sauce) Adjust to your liking. 2 Tbsp vegan butter (Earth Balance) 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 package of bowtie pasta

1. Start with prepping veggies and chik’n by dicing up veggies and slicing your chik’n to whatever size you like. 2. In a medium pan heat up olive oil/butter and add your garlic, onions and pepper. When onions become a little translucent add your mushrooms and chik’n. Add your seasonings and crank your heat up a bit to get a blackened look to veggies and chik’n. 3. Boil water boiling for pasta as your veggies are going. 4. When your veggies look the way you like, turn heat down and add your flour (make sure everything in your pan is nice and coated) and nutritional yeast. Slowly add in your milk and simmer until your sauce thickens up a bit. 5. When your pasta is done mix in your sauce and you’re done!

Present this colorful and impressively easy salad in a bowl or salad plate a drizzle with balsamic glaze! It’s a great starter for a romantic meal!

1. Prep by crumbling your vegan sausage and dicing your peppers, onions and mushrooms. Lay your biscuits our on a baking sheet and follow the instructions on the package. 2. In a medium pan with medium-high heat add your butter and olive oil. 3. Once melted add your veggies and sausage. Cook down until you get a nice golden brown on your onions and sausage. Add salt and pepper according to your taste. 4. When you reach the desired “crispyness” go ahead and lower your heat and coat everything with flour, toss around and slowly add your milk. 5. Simmer until you get that gravy consistency. Add additional salt and pepper or even red pepper flakes to taste. 6. Place on top of biscuits and add rosemary for garnish.

Chinese Soy Curls • • • • • • •

1 package of soy curls I diced onion 1 diced green pepper ½ cup soy sauce cornstarch 1 Tbsp chopped ginger 1 tsp sriracha

• • • • • •

Salt & pepper 1 Tbsp garlic powder 1 Tbsp onion powder 1 cup of orange juice 2 cloves chopped garlic ¼ cup agave syrup

Kayla Morgan /aggresive_arugula

1. Follow the instruction on package to prepare your soy curls. You will have to rehydrate these by soaking in water for about 10-12 minutes. 2. While the soy curls are soaking in saucepan add soy sauce, orange juice, agave syrup, ginger, garlic, sriracha, salt & pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and cornstarch slurry. (cornstarch slurry is 1 Tbsp of cornstarch and 4 Tbsp of water. This will help thicken your sauce up. You can always add more later if you are wanting a thicker sauce.) 3. Let this simmer and thicken up. 4. When your soy curls are complete you can toss in medium pan at mediumhigh heat with olive oil and salt and pepper. Cook for about 7-10 minutes then add your onion and pepper. Toss these around until they start to brown a bit. 5. When your sauce is thick and complete you can add to your soy curls. 6. Adjust your seasonings afterwards a tad if you would like at this point. The soy curls are very bland by themselves so you shouldn’t be afraid to over season. 7. You can add these with jasmine rice and broccoli, or you can eat them by themselves! MODERN GRACE

Grieving Hearts Sara Simoneaux

G

rief isn’t like a sweater that you occasionally pull out of the closet to try on and then quickly return. Grief isn’t synonymous with birthdays, holidays or anniversaries. Grief exists in the everyday and mundane. It shows up during your morning coffee, your commute, a song on the radio, a restaurant, a movie, an old sweatshirt or favorite photograph. It is constant and fleeting at the same time, living in both the darkness and the light. And time? Time heals nothing. With time we find our feet and learn to navigate our emotions. We learn to compartmentalize and recognize triggers. We learn what topics of conversation to avoid and when. We learn how to shove it down and continue our life. But time does not heal and grief remains as present as the air we breathe. Holidays are always especially difficult for the grieving heart. The empty chairs,

the attempted recipes that never turn out quite the same, the gifts not purchased or received, the traditions that have been lost and the children too young to ever know just what they’re missing. But there is hope in the sadness; joy in faith and the belief in what comes next. Life is fleeting but love is eternal and so is the life that God has promised us all. Death is not an end, but merely a temporary separation. And this holiday season, I’ve found solace in His promise and comfort in His love. It is my hope that all my kindred grieving hearts have found the same. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16

change Karen K. Scott

R

ecently I read a quote: “If you are depressed you’re living in the PAST. If you are anxious you are living in the FUTURE. If you are at peace you are living in the PRESENT.” —Lao Tzu I would often find myself living in all three, past, future, and present, at the same time. At night my mind was continuously going. It’s like I was anxious for no reason and I often felt secluded. I would want to go and hang with friends… but why, when I can lie on the sofa, sleep, and watch TV? Oh, but when I did get out… I pulled myself together and went to a family function, work event, or concert, all was well. I smiled and enjoyed myself, (until myself told me it was time to go, that is.) This was me. This may even be you. Many Americans experience this type of anxiety daily. For me, I had to want change, seek change, actively work at the change, and finally embrace change.

Depression, anxiety, PTSD and other mental issues plague many of us every day. Those symptoms don’t often simply go away. They must be faced, walked through, and accepted. Change is difficult. It’s uncomfortable. However, it is progression. The world is ever changing and so are we. This may be you, or someone you know. If this is you, work towards personal development, and do simple things that make you happy, fall in love with them and yourself all over again. If you can change your mind you can change your life. William James Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. -Proverbs 12:25 It is estimated* that 16.2 million adults in the US, or 6.7% of American adults, have had at least one major depressive episode in a given year. 1.5% of US adults have persistent depressive disorders and 2.8% of the US adult population has bipolar disorder.

Baggage of Your Past Brittany Edwards

M

ost people look at their past as a burden or “baggage,” something they went through but can't seem to get over. And while I agree that a good part of my past is a burden, I also choose see the beauty in it. My oldest daughter is a huge piece of my past. She is from my first marriage to my “high school sweetheart.” We hastily got married and then I became pregnant. Our relationship had been in a bad place for years, even before we got married, so as difficult as it was, as soon as I gathered enough strength to leave, I did. We separated when I was six months pregnant, and divorced a year later, but the beautiful blessing that came from that marriage is all I need to stay positive about my past. For me, my oldest daughter is proof that my past isn’t only a “burden,” but also a blessing. I strongly believe I had to walk that path in order to get to where I am now, even though it was a long, rough path, with no short cuts. Because of that, I now know how love is supposed to feel, and I know that love isn’t meant to hurt, it’s meant to heal. And when the love is right, it will heal. My husband and three daughters are proof of that, and my husband’s love for our oldest daughter is proof that love knows no bounds. So, do I regret my failed marriage? No, I don't regret it, I can’t regret it, but I did let go of it. I had to toss that baggage in the trash, because it was of no use to me anymore. I had to let go

of what could have been and move on. I also had to recognize that the only way to do that was to unpack my baggage and sort it all out. It may be painful, but it is worth it. I’m at a place in my life now where my past doesn’t weigh heavily on me anymore, and I am free from all the pain it caused my family and me. I threw all that old, heavy baggage away, and kept only the ones I could carry. The ones that remind me of the beauty in my path, not the turbulence, because those are the ones that matter. Those are the ones you should carry with you. However, I can’t say that I never think about my past. My past walks around in human form and calls me “Mommy.” When I look at my baby girl, I can see it, right there on her beautiful face, my entire past. My past isn’t just seven years of a painful relationship; my past is so much more. My past is freeing myself from a marriage that could have ruined my daughter’s life, and my past is marrying my best friend, who stood by my side through all of it. So, when it comes to my baggage, I keep the life lessons my travels taught me, but I get rid of everything else. I let go of the pain from my first marriage and hold on to the life-changing knowledge and experience. I let go of feeling like a failure, and realize that my marriage may have failed, but my daughter and I have won. So, I learned to pack light. MODERN GRACE

Toughest Decision in Middle School Laynee Simoneaux

S

chool is very stressful. Middle school especially, because it is where everything just starts to stir up, and guess what? I get to witness it for one more painful year. Middle school comes with the full package: work, drama, fun, friends, and mean people. At my school, all of those things are included… every single day. I like school sometimes, but when I don't, it is because of people. I personally do not like people that catch an attitude with me, mainly because, naturally, I will catch an attitude back, causing the problem to get much bigger. I try not to be in drama, simply by just ignoring people and staying out of the loop, but sometimes it can be hard. Most kids in middle school will turn on you so quickly, and at the most unexpected times. I´ve learned not to tell secrets or spread rumors because when people do turn on you, they are going to tell everyone everything from the little things, like you telling your brother something mean, all the

46

|

MODERN GRACE

way to the big things, like you cheating on your boyfriend. Usually, drama is going to spotlight on one main person, even if it is about ten people, one main person is going to be the bad guy. Based on experience, you’ll need to make the decision to either stay away or stick with that “bad guy” through it all. If you stay away, you don't get dragged into it, but you also may be betraying a friend. If you stick with them, then you have to go through all of it and may lose other friends along the way. I believe, if you are a friend in the beginning, then you have to be a friend in the end too, or else it will be hard on them and you. Either way, it’s a decision we all have to make in middle school… the toughest decision. I imagine it’s a decision I will have to make throughout my life. I know without a doubt, through all of the ups and downs of middle school, I am thankful for the friendships I have and confident that high school, and life, will only get better from here.

what is love? Kristi Williams-Fontenot

I

was not quite 18 and he was barely 21. He was tall, dark and handsome, had just finished playing baseball and to top it off, he had the bluest eyes I had ever seen! Exactly the kind of guy I always told my mom I would marry! Isn’t that how all fairy tales go for women?! We met in the union on campus a few days into my first semester at LSU. We had a mutual friend that set us up on our first date and as the saying goes, the rest is history! Within a year we were married and expecting our first child. Yep, that’s right, 19 and married

with a new baby! Can I be honest with you? Nothing about that was easy! Looking back you could say we were young, dumb and “in love”. I often wonder how many people thought to themselves our marriage would never last. Heck, if I am being honest, I had thought that very thing myself on more than one occasion. One thing I learned early on is that marriage is hard, and it doesn’t come with a manual. Being only 19 and 22 years old with a newborn baby makes marriage even harder. I didn’t

know how to truly love myself much less someone else. I think often times we feel like love is an emotion someone else must make us feel. I know I did. We hope and expect our spouse to do something or say something that will make us feel in love them. When, in reality, love is something that comes from within us. We choose to love. As we all know, every relationship is filled with good times and bad. But it’s in those times that you draw closer to each other and learn grace, acceptance and love. It is because of God’s grace that we can truly love. God first forgave me, so I can truly forgive someone else. God first accepted me, so I can accept someone else for who they truly are. God first loved me, so I can truly love someone else. Our marriage, like most, has been quite an amazing journey filled with a lot of good times, forgiveness and love. Today we are happily married with 4 beautiful children and this year we will celebrate our 21st anniversary. We have grown into the adults we are together, and we have learned how to truly love each other and our family. Throughout the years marriage hasn’t always been easy, but one thing I can assure you is that love always is. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-6 MODERN GRACE

Valentine’s Day Alexis Jester

O

ften, around holidays that focus on relationships such as Valentine’s Day, anniversaries. etc., it’s easy to feel pressured to go all out! However, many loved ones care less about how much you spend, and more about how much you think of them. While everyone receives love in different ways (and it doesn’t hurt to take the quick and easy 5 Love Languages assessment** to find out how) one thing is for certain, there are many ways to show love on special occasions that hit on every tier of affordability. Keep in mind that if you overspend you will enjoy it less and your special day may end with buyer’s remorse. The point is that you enjoy the day together, so be sure when planning that you don’t break the bank.

PICNIC It gives you something fun to go do together, while maintaining intimacy. You can make it as simple or extravagant as your wallet will allow. Add anything you want, even showing off how much you know about the other person by packing their favorite snacks. Even simple chocolates and finger sandwiches can suffice if you’re in the right company!

“You matter. You are loved. You are worthy. You are magical.”

COOKING AT HOME This option gets overlooked quite often because it seems easier to just buy take out; however, taking time to create something together brings you closer and leaves you with pride, satisfaction, and a new level of connection. Plus, there is no pressure of the public eye and you can be your most authentic selves together. You have free reign over what goes into your food and you won’t have to have the inner it-is-rude-to-send-itback conversation. MODERN GRACE

DINNER DATE Let’s be honest, most people like being a little dressed up and feeling like your best self from time to time. We all work or go to school or take care of the kids, sometimes one magical night on the town together can recharge your good spirits! Whether it’s the local midnight waffle place, or a 5-star restaurant, being together making memories is the best part. Well, second to the food- of course. (Special thanks to Stab’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant for the perfect setting!)

“If it is real, it will never be over.”

FRIENDLY FUNCTION Take the pressure off the “ love” narrative. Not everyone wants to plan dates, and not everyone wants to go on dates! Gather your closest friends for a Valentine’s soiree; singles, couples, family members, whoever makes you feel loved, because love doesn’t always have to be romantic. MODERN GRACE

Live Financially Focused Tiara Purnell

I

t’s 2019! A New Year means those New Year’s resolutions. Let’s make one of your resolutions be to become financially fit. What does that mean? Lowering the weight of debt, pumping up savings for retirement, and balancing your credit worthiness all define financial fitness. Making healthier money decisions is a step that points you toward the direction of building wealth. Keep in mind the basic rule: you have to earn more and spend less. In the financial industry, a business operates at a profit or “In the black” when revenues are up and expenses are down. “In the red” refers to a company having spent more than they have earned. Let’s choose to be “In the black” in 2019! The amount of money spent every week, or every month, is not always so easy to determine. We swipe our credit cards or debit card at the flick of a wrist. Be aware of your spending. Overspending can be hazardous to your financial goals. Amid the celebratory season of Valentine Day and Mardi Gras, purchasing elaborate clothing and providing a romantic dinner for two or traveling to parades and attending swanky balls, can lead to spontaneous spending that basically can put you “in the red.” However, the idea of sacrificing fun for you budget, or sacrificing your

budget for fun, can leave you ready to throw in the towel. Here are some tips to follow that will allow you to be a good steward over your finances: • Write it down and make it plain. You can apply the 70-10-20 rule to set a budget; 70% for living expenses, 10% for debts, 20% for savings. In each category be as detailed as possible. This is flexible to you, so tweak it. • The goals that you set should be realistic and attainable. • Plan and prepare by doing research in advance. • Groupon, Living Social, and RetailMeNot apps are the way to go. They offer discounts or specials on activities, tickets, or dinner plans on the go. Keep in mind, some websites or apps offer rewards to its

members. Allow your money to work for you, get paid to shop. 2019 is here, and your New Year’s resolution should be to become financially fit. Remember: set a realistic and attainable budget and always plan and prepare. Overspending can destroy your financial goal of building wealth. Try to revisit your goals daily. Post them in visible places; on social media or on your phone. You can even tell a friend. Join a group or a community of people that can keep you on the right track. You may have to make some tough decisions in the beginning; it will get easier over time. If you can see the finish line, it will be that much easier to cross.

t’s that time again in Louisiana! While we never lack for reasons to get together with family and friends, nothing takes top billing like Mardi Gras and Crawfish Season (yes, we capitalized it)! Even though Louisiana is known for year round festivities, these two typically make it ahead of the rest for “must do”. The words “parade,” “festival,” “carnival,” and

“crawfish boil” evoke feelings of fun, springtime and family. You can find an almost endless amount of festivals for Mardi Gras around the state that typically coincide with about the same amount for Crawfish. o you have that awkward empty wall in your home that you think, “One day I’ll find just the right piece?” This article is for you! Using reclaimed cabinets doors from the Louisiana Flood of 2016 we created four identical cabinets. Then we set out to demonstrate the versatility of changing trim, hardware and finish to suit individual tastes, while bringing the maximum impact with a tiny footprint. It took a quick trip to the hardware store for supplies and just a few hours to transform them into individual works of art, using techniques from the previous

issue’s (October-December 2018) DIY project. We then paired each cabinet with decorating elements from around the house. So, by utilizing different styles of legs, hardware, and your boldest expression of color, you can turn that boring wall into your own masterpiece!

Planting by the Month JANUARY is the ideal month for planting your cool-season veggies such as beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, greens (collard & mustard), lettuce, peas, potatoes, turnips, and spinach. Don’t forget to prune those roses in mid-January to early February. FEBRUARY is the last month for planting your cool-season vegetables if you missed doing so in January. Robust fruit trees, such as pear, plum and apple, should be pruned this month; be sure you look up how to prune each one properly as each have particular techniques for better growth. Before our heat sets in, get those hardy trees and shrubs down under this month so they have time to root well! MARCH is warm-season planting time! So get ready to add those bell peppers, cucumbers, corn, green beans, tomatoes, and squash to the ground. Keep in mind you must protect them during our common late-season temperature drops. The list of bedding plants for this month is long, however you can research easily to find the right fit for your taste. Some examples are: sun rose & moss rose (portulaca), Angelmist Lavender, Angelmist Purple Stripe & Serena White (Angelonia), Butterfly Light Lavender, Graffiti Bright Red, & Kaleidoscope Appleblossom (pentas).
