behind the

scenes T

his season Mod’s chose to juxtapose the look of winter glamour with the industrial scene of a mechanic’s garage. The garage was transformed into a salon as the stylists perfected the model’s gorgeous locks, and then again into a photographic studio as the models posed to show off the coming trends. Rich depth of colour brings warmth to the versatile styles of the Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. The five style suggestions – Giulia, Déesse, Mercedes, Ondine and Floride – vary from voluminous layers to sensual up-styles to a sleek bob. Each style exudes confidence and femininity while beautiful shiny hair shows off the glamour of the cuts.

Worn shoulder-length, this style features layers at the front which serve to frame the face. For a more sophisticated look, apply Mod’s Mousse Legere onto towel-dried hair then use rollers to create soft, sexy curls.

Ondine signals the return of the classic bob. The secret of the cut lies in the length – it is cut three centimetres below the chin – neither too much nor too little. To accentuate the straightness of the cut, the two front sections of hair have been subtly turned using Mod’s Smoothing Crème Anti-frizz (apply onto wet hair) and finished with Mod’s Spray Brilliance.

This style extends just past the shoulders and is silky, shiny and full – hair to die for. The well-defined look is achieved by Mod’s Volume and Énergie Lotion. Hair should be blow-dried with a round brush and finished with a hair straightener on the ends, working towards the outside.

The `40s style chignon can be reinvented ad infinitum. The essential element is the two rolls on top. To modernise the look, have fun scrunching the hair with Mod’s Fixation Forte to get away from the sleek, smooth look. Hair is held in place with Mod’s La Laque and maintains this great look, which has been filling the pages of fashion magazines.

A

s dusk descended upon St Mary’s Bay in Auckland the tranquil beauty of ruby infused tea lights created a pathway leading to a romantic experience of glamour, mystery and indulgence. Mollie’s Hotel, in partnership with Mod’s Hair, hosted `Frocktails to Die For’, an evening of romantic fantasy and exploration. Six dream worlds were created in individual rooms by fashion partners Stitch Ministry, Sera Lilly, Claire KinganJones, Adrian Hailwood and The Carpenters Daughter, proving to us once again that they are the forefront in fashion. Samala Robinson make-up captured the romantic themes exquisitely with their artistry. ‘Frocktails to Die For’ was an evening where dreams came true. The evening was in support of World Vision, and proceeds from the evening will enable World Vision to support future endeavours of micro-financing in Mongolia.

“A colour that lasts, holds well and evolves.”

There is always much to be learned from good techniques – as has been proved many times. We look at the tried and trusted colouring technique of balayage and get back to basics with rollers.

18 mods hair • April 2010

Mod’s Hair-Colour Musts

above and right: The colour is hand painted onto the hair then rested on strips of cotton wool. This results in beautiful sun-kissed locks; Jennifer Aniston keeps her colour fresh with balayage and toners. Toners add shimmer and shine.

A Mod’s client waits for the balayage highlights to take effect.

For a while now, strong colours haven’t been featuring in hairstylists palettes. This winter, colour has more depth, which is accentuated by the subtle layers that darker hair can easily cultivate. For light auburn and blonde hair, Mod’s Hair signature technique balayage is the way to go. Clients of Mod’s Hair have been embracing this technique for years. In the hands of a skilled balayage artist, colour is swept onto the hair to create natural contrasts in colour. The depth and movement of layers give the impression of being a work of nature which is why the contrast needs to be light. This is good news for those women who don’t make regular appointments with the hairdresser. A colour that lasts is actually a colour that holds well and evolves nicely with exposure to the sun. As with all coloured hair, hair that has undergone this technique needs to be looked after to maintain its amazing shine. A toner between treatments will keep a polished look and give shine to your colour. With the balayage and toners – the lip gloss of hair – complementing each other, you can see the shine on Jennifer Aniston’s hair.

WE KEEP THINGS ROLLING FOR YOU

Those rollers that used to spill out of salon trolleys have been sidelined for quite some time. However, should you ask your hairstylist, they’ll tell you that for every photo session or fashion parade, these accessories are always essential for long hair. There is nothing better to give movement, volume and suppleness.

Rollers are used to create our cover look. See page 10 for tips on how to achieve the finished style.

I

f you have been searching for a look you’ve seen on the pages of a magazine, you’re not alone. It has been a long time since a colour trend has had such an impact on stylists and celebrities the world over. The sensation of the moment is the Mod’s Hair signature technique balayage, and Zhanna Sattsaeva and her team are turning heads on the Gold Coast with this must-have look. Balayage is the technique of choice when it comes to highlights or lowlights. “You don’t have to be blonde either, our Parisian technique works on every hair colour. It is for everyone, but it does work best on longer layers,” explains Zhanna. “Our Gold Coast clients are embracing the Mod’s Hair signature look. They come in with pictures of Jennifer

Aniston and Alexa Chung (pictured) – celebs sporting artfully dishevelled, effortlessly sun-kissed hair, asking if we know how they can get this look. It is very easy for us, as Mod’s Hair clients have been wearing this look since 1968. One of the best things about balayage is that it can last up to three months. This is due to the strategic way we apply the colour at the root area. The colour is lightly applied at this point, and the natural colour of the hair – be it blonde or brown – then blends seamlessly into the balayage colour. Perfect balayage is customised to our clients’ hair colour, texture and face structure. The true beauty of balayage is in creating believable highlights and lowlights with gentle contrasts that reflect the light.

From Paris to the Gold Coast, this Mod’s Hair signature technique is enjoying growing popularity with celebrities and stylists.

The maintenance

Curly matters

Curls are back in style! Here are our top tips on how to make yours better than ever.

C

urls are gorgeous and feminine, but it is important to abide by the laws of the curl so they don’t become high maintenance and difficult to manage. Mod’s Hair cutting technique works with the hair’s movement. Here are some tips on how to keep hair looking frizz-free and fabulous!

The cut

Your stylist mustn’t be afraid to work with your curls. Soft long layers work well on curly hair and give shape and bounce, whereas a single

22 mods hair • April 2010

length is unflattering and creates a mushroom effect. Stay away from thinning out curly hair, because you need the weight to give you a stronger curl with more definition, otherwise you could end up with unwanted frizz.

The correct shampoo and conditioner are vital for your hair. We suggest you shampoo with Mod’s Hair Jojoba Nutritif and condition with Mod’s Hair Masque Jojoba Reparateur to bring the moisture back. Style wet hair with Mod’s Hair Anti Frizz for separation and definition of each curl. Finish with Mod’s Hair Elastic Curl for hold. Never leave home without a bottle of Mod’s Hair Diamond Serum. When the humidity of the day starts to take effect, run a few drops through your hair to bring shine and calm to the frizz.

The finish

Sometimes it’s great to straighten curls but don’t be afraid to reach for the curling iron as some sections of your hair can be less curly than others and sometimes need a little more definition. Visit Mod’s Hair for your complimentary curly consultation. Our stylists will listen to you and suggest the best cuts. Short on time, all frizz but no shine? Email us, we deliver: modsproducts@modshair.co.nz

The colour

While all-over colour does give the best definition, curls are always darker than straight hair because straight hair reflects the light better, so enhance your curls with soft highlights to create lightness and shine.

Need more volume in your life? Volumise with marine nutritive complex

a day in the life of an

editorial stylist Olivier de Vriendt has a job that many people dream of. But the role of a studio hairdresser is less glamorous than it might appear.

the early bird gets the worm

Up at 6.30am! That’s the rule that Olivier de Vriendt imposes on himself the night before a photo shoot. This early start doesn’t particularly worry Olivier as he likes to take his time getting himself prepared. So what does this entail? To start with, a decent breakfast, then he does a run-through of his schedule for the next few days. Finally, he checks that everything is in his bag, despite it always being ready to go.

Business is in the bag

Some hairdressers require a huge suitcase on wheels and others, such as Olivier, have a large bag containing all the essential gear ready for a shoot. For him, this includes two sizes of curling tongs, hair straighteners, product, a few rollers, a hairnet for the mises en plis (big, loose curls), combs, brushes, blowdryer, a hairpin kit and scissors – all the usual suspects. But there is also

34 mods hair • April 2010

some metal wire, pliers and tape, which is less standard. There are also extensions of course, as well as some add-ons, hairpieces, and finally, some hair.

First arrivals

At a shoot, the team is very important. Often there are about a dozen people assembled, including the photographer, stylist, make-up artist, model, and assistants. Olivier prefers to arrive slightly ahead of time, at 9am, as does the photographer. Once all the key staff have arrived and everyone has their coffee and croissants, the time comes for talking about the pictures to be taken, and the story to be told. “We discuss any necessities that must take precedence, then each person puts forward their suggestions. From that point, either I start the hairdressing or the make-up gets underway. There are no rules, it all depends on the work to be done,” explains Olivier.

“This job is all about passion. You can’t be constantly checking the time.” Patience, waiting & concentration These three words nicely sum up a shoot. Viewed from the outside, you could be forgiven for thinking it looks easy. However, each person must be on the ball since a small detail such as a strand of hair out of place, a shiny complexion, or a wrinkle in a stocking must not escape the attention of those involved. Apart from the sacrosanct lunch break, it is important to maintain an air of tension and good humour throughout the day. And the number of hours that a shoot might last? “There’s no rule about that either,” replies Olivier. “This job is all about passion. You can’t be constantly checking the time.”

If your cheeks are blotchy your lungs need support and in case the redness spreads to the nostrils you should also do something for your bronchial tubes. Ventilate your home and office frequently and be aware of mold and micro-dust. Various breathing techniques can also be helpful. Are your lips dry and cracked? I Can’t Believe My Eyes

NEW!

Mod’s Hair director Carl Watkins’ life changed after HD LASIK. Tell us a little about your eyes. I have been wearing glasses since the age of six because I was far-sighted. As I got older I tried contact lenses but when I played contact sports such as rugby and surfing they were an annoyance and really of no use at all. From bespectacled youth to 20-20 vision. Carl hasn’t looked back since having HD LASIK.

What was your biggest frustration about wearing glasses? When choosing sunglasses, the options were very limited. Designer frames or lenses were definitely out of the question so there was no Prada or Armani for me! What motivated you to try High Definition LASIK? I lead an active life (Speight’s Coast to Coast, salmon fishing, skiing, diving) and all these things I love doing were made difficult with glasses or contacts. I wanted the security of knowing my glasses were not going to shatter in my face. Talk us through the process. The screening process was brilliant. I had a list of questions but many of them were answered during my initial free assessment. The team at Fendalton Eye Clinic were superb. What was it like after the surgery? It was amazing! From the moment I stepped off the table I had 20-20 vision. Imagine a manual camera, coming into focus, that is exactly what it was like. Waking up the next day and seeing the world without my glasses was wonderful. Was it worth the money? Absolutely. It’s amazing to go from wearing thick, heavy glasses to having none at all. With 20-20 vision my life has been simplified as well as enhanced. I have completed the Speight’s Coast to Coast and only this weekend I was diving for crayfish in Akaroa. It is truly liberating. Fendalton Eye Clinic offer free HD LASIK assessments. Is High Definition LASIK right for you? Free assessments are available with a member of the technical team, throughout the South Island and Wellington. Phone 0800 4 LASIK (0800 45 27 45) or visit Lasik.co.nz

hair at any age

age-perfect hair 20s 40s

For a more gorgeous you at any age, take a look at these basic rules for beautiful hair.

time to experiment

DO

›› Now is the time for you to use textures and architectural cuts to your advantage. ›› Edgy colours work best with youthful skin so you can pull off bold colours now more than ever. Reds, deep brunettes and platinum blondes all set off a sensational cut. For a free-hand colour effect, try balayage. It’s ideal for a twenty-something with attitude who doesn’t want to look like she’s tried too hard.

DO

›› Go for looks that create softness and lift around the face. This can easily be obtained from a combination of the cut, layers and highlights that will soften your face. ›› Your colour tones are important, so keep hair toned by seeing your stylist for blow waves between colour appointments. ›› For optimum hair and scalp health, the Kérastase Age Recharge Ritual works to rehydrate the scalp and give vitality back to hair.

TIP

Beautiful hair is always a must. In-salon treatments keep hair in top condition. Try Kérastase Rituals, which are available in all Mod’s salons.

Kate Moss

coiffured confidence

›› By the time you reach your 30s you will know more about who you are, what you want, and where you’re going in life. If you don’t, you can make it look like you do by having a style that shows the world that you’ve got it sorted. ›› Whether your look is youthful and playful or more mature and sophisticated, keep it well maintained. Visit your salon every six to eight weeks to keep your hair groomed and gorgeous.

DO

›› Remind your stylist you’re 20, not 50. Conservative looks are ageing. Keep it fresh and be unafraid. ›› Stay away from wedding hair up-dos; instead, opt for a salon blow-dry that will leave hair shiny, loose and sexy.

DON’T

›› Now is the time to soften your look, so stay away from harsh colours. Instead of black choose brunette, and go for soft creamy blonde over platinum. ›› Let go of the look you had as a student and opt instead for well-kept, shiny tresses. ›› After the experimentation of her 20s, Kate Moss is now a perfect example of a thirty-something with beautiful, well-maintained hair.

DON’T

groomed & gorgeous

DON’T

›› By now you will know what works for you. Don’t go for radical cuts and colours. In general you can safely go two shades either side of your natural colour. ›› Don’t buy into the stereotype that as you get older you have to have short hair. A short back and sides truly suits very few women. If you want to change your look, talk to your stylist.

Helen Mirren

simply styled

›› Salon blow-dries are important. ›› Ultra-long locks rarely work for the over 50s. Instead, go for something a little more polished. For example, a shoulder cut frames the body and exposes your narrowest curve – your neck. ›› Maintain your cut and keep your hair looking fresh every five weeks as opposed to six. ›› If your hair is starting to thin, talk to your stylist about the Nioxin range, to help keep it in control.

DON’T

• Don’t use hair accessories. Opt instead for simple elegance. • When blow-drying your hair, avoid a lot of volume – a little is flattering, but a lot is ageing. • Your hair should have movement and be beautiful and soft. Dame Helen Mirren is one to watch for inspiration.

profile street art

If you were in Europe last summer you may have been to the Fondation Cartier in Paris and seen Né Dans La Rue, (Born In The Streets). The exhibition payed tribute to urban graffiti and examined the culture surrounding and influencing it. a rebel movement

Towards the end of the ’60s the walls of certain areas of New York started to be covered with strange graphics. The authors were young Hispanic- or African-Americans from Harlem, post-adolescents who wrote their names with the strokes of markerpens or paint cans. The tag, or signature (often accompanied by the number of the writer’s street) was a significant feature of this new movement. Nobody knew at that stage that it would become artistic, nor that these graffiti artists (graffeurs) were true products of the American counter culture of the time. City walls became the space for this new form of expression and the subway was its specialist territory. The graffiti artists besieged train interiors, stations and finally freight trains. It was impossible to ignore this youth culture that took real risks in painting the night time frescoes, playing cops and robbers with the police. Some creative artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat, David Wojnarowics and Keith Haring immediately understood that this was a reassessment of the system, and they firmly adhered to the associated beliefs.

Graffiti at the Fondation Cartier

1

An exhibition of graffiti from this early period recently showed at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. The graffiti offered itself up to the gaze of onlookers from behind glass. A hoarding was set up and was covered in writing; an invitation to be immersed in this world of colours and shapes. The speediest immersion presented itself in the film room. Visitors spent hours

in there and were fascinated as they watched graffiti artists in action. In the basement there were other films adjoining photoboards, glass boxes housing notebooks of tags, and camouflage clothing that the rebels would wear in the subway.
