COLOURS WINTER COLLECTION

Welcome to the new season, new trends and new-look Mod’s Hair magazine. In this issue, the Mod’s Hair team goes behind the scenes and discovers the latest in hairstyling trends across the globe. We visit Mod’s Hair Tokyo, which is celebrating 30 years of hairdressing and more than 135 salons, and take a sneak peek at this season’s Mod’s Hair trends. It’s not just about one cut or colour; this season sees a range of dark and light shades, long and short cuts, and structured and unstructured styles, all with a dash of French chic. Australia’s first Mod’s Hair salon has arrived on the Gold Coast, adding more bling to its shores. It opened in February 2009. Architecturally designed, the openplan interior and personalised space seduces clients, just as New Zealand Mod’s Hair clients have been experiencing style and pampering for the past five years. New cuts, new salons, new season: the spirit of Mod’s Hair is alive and vibrant. For the latest hair trends and tips, go to Mod’s Hair salon partner Julianne Liebeck’s blog at mindfood.com or email your haircare and style questions to hairtrends@mindfood.com.

how a collection is

behind the scenes

born

M

od’s Hair clients don’t wait for the press when it comes to matters of fashion. They know the vision behind the creators of Mod’s and their hairdressing studios, which they call on for fashion parades. For more than 30 years, Mod’s Hair has been at the forefront of what are now called the “season’s trends”, but from the salon stage there is a journey to be made that leaves nothing to improvisation. With the fashion parades over, Guillaume Berard and his studio hairdressing team gather together in work sessions. Each person brings his or her vision for the season and talks about what he or she has seen in the magazines while travelling at shows. In this way the Mod’s Hair press kit is sketched out. The first ideas for cuts and styles are submitted to the training directors. As Frederic Berard explains, “When there is choice and ambiguity you’ve just got to get on with it. What our customers appreciate is that we are ahead of the play. They don’t want to look like their neighbours. It is their neighbours who want to look like them!” Work then starts at the training centre to translate instinct into creation. When everything is finalised, those in charge of the training in the six major countries where Mod’s Hair has a presence come to Paris to be present at a live demonstration. This is where they see how the season’s trends will be reproduced in the salon. When everything is rolling, the filming starts. Videos are the most important tool for the Mod’s Hair hairdressers. They can train on a variety of heads of hair, which, in turn, allows them to give their clients an excellent result.

Agathe

Extensions are for someone who does just as she pleases. Long hair, great volume, highlights, fringe …you can have it all and thrive on it for ever. The pose is the secret of success and it’s a Mod’s Hair specialty.

What colour will winter hold? The Mod’s Hair girls will be all colours. Warm hair shades, tangy make-up and stylised flashiness for the season’s muses, introducing Agathe, Jade, Lily Rose, Ambre, Cassie and Perle. Photographed for the studio session by Guillaume Berard, the girls strike a pose. Long hair, extensions, deconstructed carrés (bobs) with a dash of colour to add some spice. Jade

Do you have fine hair and dream of volume? This cut is just for you. The subtle blonde look is achieved with “Baby Blonde” highlights. Once you have that, it’s all in the styling, with some Mod’s Hair polish applied.

Singer Amy Winehouse’s charm also lies in her hair. Extravagance is achieved with gorgeous extensions. If you’re tempted, they know how to go about it at Mod’s Hair.

2008/09 WINTER COLLECTION Ambre

A flashback to the 1980s with a layered cut leaves the hair looking soft, yet with volume. Nostalgia? Sure, for those who love that wind-blown effect. And, for the ultimate in style, light highlights are added to the shorter-length hair.

April 2009 • mod’s hair 13

Cassie

The sensual pleasure of long hair, in this case with a cut based on a carré. What saves it from looking rigid? Frayed sides and a fringe. Blow-drying with a flat brush and curling tongs completes the look.

Perle

Cultivate that vaguely rebellious look with a carré that achieves a light look by chopping in with scissors. The finished look is softened by “Baby Blonde” highlights. Depending on your mood, you can have a classic look simply by blow-drying with a round brush.

contemporary showing at Air New Zealand Fashion Week brought together the creative talent of Stitch Ministry and the Mod’s Hair team, delivering a high-intensity show influenced by Native American heritage. The styling talents of Ryan Lobo, combined with the talented team from Mod’s Ponsonby salon, created a theatrical show that previewed the Lighter Side of Dark Winter collection at its best. The salon team created a look that complemented the theme of the show by creating loosely constructed curls, complete with a sweptback top section. Feathers and headbands were used throughout the runway show, so hair needed to be kept delicate and understated.

Sometimes we want to make a radical change, like Svenja, who went from shoulder-length hair to a shorter cut, lightened by warm colour. The result is a more uplifting look that manages to maintain a certain softness. A lovely transformation.

Giving yourself a change of air without taking a plane is often simply a matter of changing your appearance. A makeover at Mod’s Hair is both a specialty and a state of mind. And before taking flight, you sit and talk about it together. That’s why the dialogue between the hairdresser and their client is of paramount importance. It provides the opportunity to really understand what is being asked for, the expectations, the obstacles…and to suggest the right cut, the right colour – in short, the right look.

The cut is the first stage Based on a carré and layered through the front to give a fringe effect.

colour q&A

myths of hair colour Like urban legends, there are many hair myths that circle the globe. Like a new strain of flu virus, once a hair rumour starts, it develops a life of its own and spreads like wildfire. Some of the hair stories endure for years. Here are the answers to the six most commonly asked questions.

Is colouring my hair damaging? When performed correctly, colouring your hair will not create noticeable damage. Hairstylists are often faced with the dilemma of trying to meet the demands of the client and maintaining the condition of the hair. Remember that colouring hair is not only an art but also a science and you should always be guided by the recommendation of your colourist. Do you really need to use special shampoo and conditioner? Without a doubt! If you have invested time and money in achieving your desired colour, what is a little extra to ensure that your hair remains in optimum condition and true to colour? The minerals in our water, pollution in the atmosphere and general daily use of hair irons and hair-dryers can cause your colour to fade. Shampoo and conditioner dedicated to preserving colour and offering protection against UV and pollution will make a huge difference to the general appearance and longevity of your colour.

What is the difference between permanent colour and semi-permanent colour? Permanent colour can offer more options as it can lighten or darken your natural hair colour. Semi-permanent colour can enhance your existing colour (adding reflects) or darken your existing colour but it can’t lighten. Semi-permanents are great for people who don’t want to commit to the maintenance and regrowth that can occur with a permanent colour. If I have a permanent colour; will I have bad regrowth? Because of the pigments in permanent colour, they do create a stronger regrowth line. The depth of the colour you choose will have more impact on your new growth. Choosing a colour depth close to your natural colour will minimise the appearance of regrowth. How long should I wait before I wash my hair after my colour? Hair should be left for 48 hours after the day of colouring before being shampooed as it allows the pigment to fully penetrate.

When using hair colour what damage am I doing to my hair and the environment? Finally, there is a true greenie on the market in terms of colour. Schwarzkopf Professional has recognised this ever-growing trend and demand and has developed a colour range that is 90 per cent naturally derived, contains gently fermented ectoin and doesn’t contain fragrances, ammonia or silicone. Named Essensity, it delivers on both nature and performance with a social conscience.

sonia rykiel

This autumn, SONIA RYKIEL celebrates 40 years of creation.

“As a child I hated clothes. I only liked them old and worn. I could have kept the same jersey and skirt on for a year…”

F

ortunately for the designer, her clients never exhibited the same behaviour and, for 40 years, generations of Rykiel girls have been born. Nevertheless, that attitude she had as a child remains apparent in Rykiel’s creations. Her clothes can be kept for years, even if every season you have a desire to give yourself others as a gift. The secret of Rykiel’s success is revealed by her friend, writer Madeleine Chapsal, who understood only too well the Rykiel effect: “Her skill is in preempting a movement…Her skirt-pants prompted previously unheard-of leg games – ones that until then had been prohibited by good manners!” she writes.

22 mod’s hair • April 2009

We found ourselves therefore enjoying this new freedom at the end of the 1960s. Right from the start Rykiel was a “stitch” expert, the uncontested queen who transformed jerseys, sweatshirts, coats or dresses into instantly recognisable pieces. To do that she had to do more than break taboos. Rykiel was enthusiastic about black and enforced it being worn from the morning, jazzing it up with stripes and glitter. Without any hang-ups whatsoever, Rykiel showed the seams of pieces and played with both the right and wrong sides of garments at a time when it was not the done thing! Forty years later, Rykiel has become an international label while remaining a family name. More than being a success, she has lived a life she dreamed of. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs is dedicating an exhibition to her 40 years of creation: Sonia Rykiel Exhibition, from November 20, 2008, to April 1, 2009.

Love conquers all…

ARMAND VENTILO has been part of the women’s fashion scene for nearly 30 years, and returns to his first love by launching his men’s label.

armand ventilo

stunning “Significance” Featuring 1-4 carat centre diamond in Platinum.

Designer and dreamer, Ventilo has been making his mark on the world of fashion for the past 30 years.

A

man ahead of his time, Ventilo’s style has come from his early conviction of the richness of traditional savoir-faire, and his advocacy of mixing people as well as genres. His collections accurately reflect the spirit of the time highlighted by a singularity of form to which he alone holds the key. A touch of embroidery, a wisp of lace, a dash of pearls, smooth leather, a beautiful broadcloth…Ventilo women are inspired travellers. And the men? Having dedicated his first creations to them, Ventilo abandoned men along the way. Now in the age of reason where it is good to be wild, Ventilo is launching a male collection, his inspiration being the two things he most appreciates: music and cinema. So the wardrobe he presents is haunted by silhouettes of James Dean, Steve McQueen and Dylan. Jeans, cotton flannel, shirts with and without scarves, suits with and without waistcoats – everything is permitted as the idea is to mix things around in order to re-invent oneself, to move in order to have fun. Businessman or rocker, everyone can find their own music here and, just like in the movies, it is quite possible to change roles. A new Ventilo boutique is opening its doors to mark the occasion. As far as the clothes are concerned it’s for men only, though women will love it, too. Some pieces are already among their favourites.

surfers paradise S ituated in Circle on Cavill, Mod’s Hair is in the heart of the premium retail and dining precinct in Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia. The Mod’s Hair directors believe Surfers Paradise gives maximum exposure to the French brand, which has 400 salons around the globe: “Yes, this is the first in Australia and we are very, very excited to have the new salon concept for 2009.” Mod’s Hair Surfers Paradise offers a spa lounge feel. Individual areas are represented, with a coffee table for clients, and hairdressers work in a “chouchouté” area with a calm atmosphere. The use of three-dimensional mirrors creates a stunning effect for the client. The spirit is simple: clients are recognised, privileged and respected, and the finishes are soft and sensual. The strict confines of the original salon have been taken away to reveal a warmer and more personal space.

Not only did the furniture come from Paris, so did the staff: Delphine is an educator from the Mod’s training school in Paris, and Julien is a stylist from the famous Rue Marbeuf Mod’s International Salon. “The experience of balayage colour technique is the best in the world,” says the Oceania director. Zhanna Sattsaeva, Gold Coast Salon director, is originally from Moscow and has travelled to Paris several times for her training. Sattsaeva worked alongside Julianne Liebeck for two years. It was Liebeck who recognised Sattsaeva’s amazing talent, which is why she is now the managing director of the Surfers Paradise salon. “Sattsaeva has an incredible eye for detail, particularly with her clients, and she takes customer service to a whole new level,” says Liebeck. “Sattsaeva has the most incredible personal success story. She is a true Mod’s icon in the making.”

Paris bar guide

ot everyone can afford a room in a fine hotel but having a drink is within reach of every curious visitor, and discovering a new place makes the detour worthwhile. A particular atmosphere generally reigns, where the staff are efficient and discreet, and time seems to slip by unnoticed. Once through the doors of these famous establishments you simply need to speak with the manager, who subtly points every new arrival in the right direction. Sometimes the bar isn’t a far cry from a tea salon, but that’s another focus altogether, because barmen, those professionals who officiate until late into the night, don’t like to mix the genres…

Le César bar, Hôtel de Crillon.

Have a short black served on a zinc bistro counter or sip a cocktail at the bar of a mythical hotel. That’s Paris!

36 mod’s hair • April 2009

Le César In the kingdom of luxury, Hôtel de Crillon is a star. Within this superb building, originally designed for receiving ambassadors and once the property of the counts of Crillon, history with a capital “H” began under Louis XV. Since then – and one French Revolution later – the building has lost nothing of its former glory. It became a luxury hotel in 1909 and will soon be celebrating its 100-year anniversary, accompanied by a sense of the illustrious shadows that undoubtedly remain in its walls. Emperors, kings, queens and presidents…an impressive list that explains why entering these premises holds such appeal. The bar is clearly something not to be missed. Designed in the 1980s by sculptor César and decorated by Sonia Rykiel, its ambiance

is perfect for any moment of the day. The doors open at 11.30am and you can have a leisurely lunch in an informal and welcoming atmosphere. From 8pm the pianist awaits and provides a very pleasant “piano bar” feel. 10, place de la Concorde 75008 Paris. Le Bar Hemingway When a bar has a name such as Hemingway, things bode well for those who are partial to a strong drink or two. Add to that the fact that it’s the bar at the Ritz, and therein lies the ultimate reason to go there for a drink or two. Just to show off, you can order the most expensive cocktail in the world, or simply be content with a glass of champagne and the barman’s enlightening banter, as he is a fan of literature, or at least of those who produce it. 15, place Vendôme 75001 Paris. Le Bar du Bristol Take note those of you who have no head for history. It was here that important treaties were signed by great men, and stars were happy to provide autographs. And what names! They talk of Marilyn, just to mention the blondest of them. It’s not a question of mingling with the crowd though, as this is a classy joint and discretion is one of its attributes. The decor is the height of French elegance. Should you refuse yourself the pleasure of alcohol, at tea-time you can order the beverage of the same name without appearing too badly brought up. 112, rue du Fg St Honoré 75008 Paris.

AT THE CORNER BISTRO To get to know Paris and especially Parisians, there is no place like the café, an old tradition in Europe dating back centuries. In the morning, just before work, cafés, which are so particular to France, present their best features. People hurry to the counter to enjoy a flat white (p’tit crème) or short black (noir serré). At the best addresses you’ll find the daily papers, in particular l’Equipe, which unleashes (especially in the football season) numerous comments and observations. Despite being very busy, lunch hour is also interesting and the beverage of choice is usually a glass of red or white wine or tap beer (une pression). The afternoon brings a different clientele again. The tension has subsided and it’s often at this time of the day that the barman is ready to chat. Here are some of the most visited addresses. Au Bar du Lutétia Here you’ll bump into the journalists, producers and renegades of Saint Germain des Prés. If fate is smiling upon you, you might come across Catherine Deneuve moving through without her dark glasses as she doesn’t have to make a big deal of things here. Those who wish to can have a glass of fine red or white without lingering too long as the place isn’t spacious and the tables are few. Bar staff and waiters are accustomed to it and are fast and effective. It’s a good address for meeting up with someone before taking in some art. 45, boulevard Raspail 75006 Paris. Le Plaza Athénée No-one knows why, but this hotel is impressive. A large facade, a plethora of doormen, bellboys and meeting-and-greeting staff, black limousines permanently parked in front…an overriding sense of the luxury hotel and the “happy few”. But once at the bar, situated in the

foyer on the right past the gallery, you’ll find cocktails that will instantly make you feel better. What’s more, you can get a sense of atmosphere from the outside as the windows overlook the avenue Montaigne. 25, avenue Montaigne 75008 Paris. La Palette In a street that is by the Seine and is the uncontested stronghold of the galleries, this café is an institution. There are the regulars and then there are the tourists, tempted here by the bohemian lure of the place. The welcome is as it comes. You could be treated like a prince or, if the waiter’s not in the mood, barely noticed. But the wine is always good quality, the baguette for the sandwiches beyond reproach and the atmosphere full of nostalgia, no matter what the time of day. If it’s sunny, sitting on the pavement allows you to see what constitutes the soul of the area, with artists, the radical chic and others wandering by.

paris bar guide Café La charette Just a few paces from the superb courtyard of the Beaux Arts, this café is what Parisians like to call un troquet (small café). It’s a real jewel for café fans. As soon as you push open the door, the zinc-covered counter makes its presence felt. At first glance you can see that the sheen of the tables and chairs is authentic despite a recent paint job. In this atmosphere of times gone by and never to be regained you will come across both art students and local labourers, with everybody appreciating the wellpriced, affordable wines. Le Dada Stopping in this café is like sinking into a bath of Parisians. On the corner of the rue Poncelet and avenue des Ternes, Le Dada is at the centre of the 17th arrondissement market, where fruit and vegetable sellers and all sorts of storekeepers ply their wares daily. The counter

is a monument to the care and attention lavished upon it. Of an imposing size, it is covered in tiles and, depending on what’s happening, decorated with banners. Whatever the event, rugby reigns supreme and the draught beer is worthy of the fans. Le café du Métro As its name suggests, this café sits comfortably at the base of a metro station and has done so since the 1920s. Though not classified as a historical monument, it certainly

deserves to be, if only for its counter. It has been installed here since its opening and is a real collector’s piece that has witnessed huge numbers of people passing by. If you are keen on hearing stories, don’t hesitate to chat with the owner. He is the grandson of the original owner and has his family’s history right at his fingertips. For those who love the old Paris, the owner is very proud of his bar and has had postcards produced of his grandfather posing in front of the old facade. 67, rue de Rennes 75006 Paris. Le Melon Very much the heir of the old Parisian café, Le Melon is a place where you can share a glass of wine (rather than a coffee), buy a bottle recommended by the owner and dine, provided you’re willing to sample a somewhat unique menu. The charm of the place not only takes heed of all these necessities but also of the quality of the food. Lovers of fine wines will rejoice at the eclectic range of vintages available. place to visit, tucked away in one of those outlying areas of the capital that has taken both the young and trendy and the old and nostalgic Parisians by storm. 92, rue Rebeval 75019 Paris. La Place Verte Between the Ménilmontant and Parmentier metro stations there are several great bars and cafés that are a constant reminder that Paris is good at maintaining tradition. Younger people have invaded the area, and the general feel is one of creativity with a touch of the dilapidated and a hint of the retro, all of which makes for designer cool. Such is the case at La Place Verte, which has taken its inspiration from the 1950s. Cool 30somethings fully appreciate it while the crazier crowd opts for neighbouring café Le Charbon. The owner, also of La Place Verte, has preferred to re-create an atmosphere befitting the bougnats (café proprietors who sold coal) of yesteryear. 105, rue Oberkampf 75011 Paris.

open-air opera

Julie Depardieu is a fan of opera. A virus she contracted several years ago has caused her to dream of occasions such as this, the Contes de Hoffmann, a production for which she worked in tandem with Stéphan Druet, a director and musician trained in the art of lyricism. The preparation How does a hairstylist work for an opera production? For one thing, as a team. And the first partnership is with the person responsible for costuming. This year, the Mod’s Hair studio team took the eloquent designs of fashion designer Franck Sorbier as its starting point. Once introduced to the samples of likely fabrics, the seeds were sown and the hairstyles were born from those first viewings.

The wigs With the hairstyles now lodged in the imagination, Guillaume and Olivier launched themselves into a styling exercise of which they have been doing less and less: preparing wigs for the company of actors. They renewed their acquaintance with this craft that involves dying, cutting, crimping and curling the synthetic hair. They were also obliged to create each wig twice as the lead roles were to be alternated. But what a joy for our two stylists, who spent more than a month in addition to their day job on this “second” job. “It’s such a pleasure to be using only wigs,” says Guillaume. Not that the work is any less demanding, but on the evening of the performance, which is outdoors,

Only the fear remains that the singers will overheat, which would be likely to cause the volume of hair to droop. on tour It’s late afternoon in the grounds of a chateau. Walking through the seating and over the stage, which is in the process of being set up, and into the tents that have been erected to provide the wings are Guillaume, Frédéric and Olivier. Such is their route during the Opéras en Plein Air (open-air opera) season. A period over the summer takes them from Paris to Champ de Bataille, from Sceaux to Carcassonne, Vaux-le-Vicomte and Haroué. Each performance has its own magic, linked to the architecture of the chateau, its presence, the design of its gardens, the moon and the number of stars.

ame Malvina Major has experienced a lifetime of opera. Her extensive international career has recently been recognised with a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit award. From London to Salzburg, Dame Malvina has always found visiting Europe a joy. “It is the birthplace of opera and there is much depth, at so many levels, to explore and understand,” she says. With an international opera career including more than 29 major opera roles and an extensive oratorio and concert repertoire, Dame Malvina has a unique opera perspective. Hence her motivation to create a special tour to share some of her experiences, including some of the most majestic operas being performed in Austria and Northern Italy. “Being in Europe during June and July ensures we will be there to

experience the full opera season and the beauty of a European summer,” says Dame Malvina. Austria has a special appeal because of Dame Malvina’s time based in Salzburg performing Il Barbiere di Siviglia. It was a wonderful time to explore the city, including the historical cathedral, the city’s beautiful gardens, nearby lakes and the stunning mountains. Dame Malvina also appreciates Italy. Her special European tour will encompass Venice, Verona, Lake Como and Milan. “My interest is not just opera,” says Dame Malvina. “I adore the palaces, churches and historical gardens that Europe has to offer. It will be a leisurely tour to allow time to enjoy the daytime beauty, whether it be strolling through the old cities, cruising on a lake or sampling fine Italian wines in an authentic vineyard.” – Robyn Galloway

Opening in February 2008, Petrini quickly established itself as a favourite destination for Christchurch foodies. Petrini is a multi-awardwinning restaurant and deli named after Italian food hero Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Food movement. Carlo has inspired the team at Petrini to focus on a more relaxed pace of life centred on the important things, including good food and wine shared with family and friends. In the deli, Petrini houses an extensive range of appetising imported and local foodstuffs. Artisan cheeses from home and abroad are matured in the temperature- and humiditycontrolled cheese room. Breads are baked daily in the bakery. Salads, antipasti and takehome meals are prepared by the restaurant kitchen for sale in the deli. “It took us 18 months of planning before we opened, and 12 months on it’s still very much a work in progress,” says Petrini’s general manager, Janine Morgan.

Petrini offers full à la carte dining in the restaurant for lunch and dinner. In keeping with the Slow Food ethos the menu showcases beautiful local products, such as organic Murrellen pork and Wairau Valley salmon. Head chef Brad Kneale focuses on flavours and techniques that bring the best out of Petrini’s ingredients. There is even soufflé on offer for dessert – a dish usually considered too time-consuming for restaurant production. Petrini’s deli is open from 10am to 6.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 9am to 5pm on weekends. The restaurant is open from noon until late from Wednesday to Sunday.
