hroughout the year, Mod’s Hair stylists spend time at photo sessions organised by fashion magazines, then there are the sessions for Mod’s Hair that they orchestrate themselves, where the hairstyle is in the spotlight – as it should be, since these photoshoots present their collections’ new trends. Mod’s Hair studio hairdressers play a role in this adventure, which provides the opportunity for this team to achieve the looks that they master to perfection. A massive day’s work (with four to six different looks to photograph) and, because fashion demands it, a clothing stylist and make-up artist from the Mod’s Hair agency. The models’ hair is worked and the photography and video is in capable hands. This season, “In the Hair” brings short back into vogue and, for those who have no desire to cut their hair, it brings freedom to play with length. Other Mod’s Hair photoshoots also take place with makeovers as part of these. The opportunity to transform a woman by means of a cut, colour or style…you’ll see demonstrations of all of these scenarios on the following pages.

Oh les beaux jours (happy days). Let’s shamelessly borrow the title of one of Samuel Beckett’s plays. In just four words the writer transmits that universal desire for light, for mellow sun and for days ahead that you can’t help but imagine as warm and beautiful. Whatever the temptation, the idea of variety is the key to pleasure. We have three suggestions – Mary-Kate, Coco and Bee – for the same head of hair. Tamed length and three ways to think of volume prove you can have a change of style if you have the raw material. For Nicoll and Mila it’s the same idea with two variations for short hair. 10 mod’s hair • October 2009

This style features an uneven part that doesn’t follow a straight line and has plenty of volume. The result is the work of a professional – they know how to go about it at Mod’s Hair. Apply Mod’s Hair Lotion Fixation Forte and a small amount of Mod’s Hair Polish.

spring/summer collection coco

Volume for wild-child beauty. This look comes down to an art with nothing natural to it – it’s all in the cut, even for long hair. You need to know how to give back shape and cut to accentuate the thickness. Start with Mod’s Hair Spray Mistral; spraying at the roots gives the hair bounce and vitality.

12 mod’s hair • October 2009

nicoll

The same carré (bob) as Mila but this time played out with a hint of the well behaved and mysterious. To wear this cut well, a few products help to keep it in place. The fringe remains untouched and the look is one of opposing winds: a movement taking wing on one side and, just like that, everything shifts over nicely. Hair styled using Mod’s Hair Mousse Légère.

spring/summer collection mila

Here’s the carré (bob) again, except that it no longer resembles one. Out with the perfect symmetry and the meticulous fringe. Thanks to the cut, from now on it’s all tousled to take advantage of the volume gained. Plus, it’s all broken up: on the forehead the hair has an almost clawed look. Start with Mod’s Hair Volume and Energy Lotion; finish with Mod’s Hair Design Gloss.

BEE

A way of going from long to short over the period of an evening. A piece of work that is all curls on curls, achieved through technical precision. The look is inspired by fashion, which is not surprising at Mod’s Hair. Start with Mod’s Hair Crème Hydratante; finish with Mod’s Hair Spray Sirocco.

trip to the City of Light to celebrate 100 years of L’Oréal makes it extra special for those involved. L’Oréal Professionnel brought together world-class hairdressing talent from around the globe in a centenary celebration event, Paris Inspiration, held in Paris. Julianne Liebeck, Director of Mod’s Hair, joined in the celebrations for this world-class event. While the social calendar was particularly intense, the group also attended a number of Inspiration Master Classes held over two days. Topics included consumers and services, cutting and styling, fashion, salon business and colour innovation. The event culminated in the Great Inspiration Show covering 100 years of hairdressing, which was held at Zenith in Parc de la Villette, the most modern and famous concert venue in Paris. The highlight of the evening for Liebeck was meeting iconic French hairstylist Odile Gilbert. Gilbert began her career as an apprentice in a Paris salon in 1975. Today, along with Guillaume Bérard, she is one of the most highly sought hairstylists for many top designers. With imagination and skill that transforms styling hair into an art form, Gilbert is a fixture backstage at fashion shows, from haute couture to ready-to-wear.

The femininity of her new cut has reassured Jessica. Her hair covers her shoulders, which still places it in the long hair category, and the warm highlights add emphasis. The shine Jessica was looking for gives her star quality – all the more reason to strike a pose in front of the lens.

If you want a new look, follow Jessica’s lead and opt for a mid-length cut with long layers. She arrived at Mod’s Hair devoid of clear ideas and rediscovered herself a few hours later, delighted with her new look and a photo session.

Season after season, Kamo reinvents his own savoir faire and mobilises the mind. An atypical studio hairdresser, inquisitive about everything involving the world that surrounds him, Kamo says he has been fortunate in the

people he has met. For example, Karl Lagerfeld entrusted him with the delicate task of styling the hair for Chanel’s haute couture shows featuring black and white with Coco Mademoiselle’s darling camellia made of paper. Decidedly unconventional, Kamo also enjoys recolouring fashion photos that make the headlines of the world’s top magazines, and that’s where the hair moves into colour.

MODERN STYLE A must-see, if only for the décor, Ladurée bar in the Champs-Élysées is utterly modern. It’s a new concept for the honourable establishment better known for its tearooms boasting an 18th century atmosphere and its royal

macaroons. Different times, different customs, with 40 mouth-watering recipes available at the bar, as well as cocktails and strong drinks. What a choice between sweet treats and cocktails. 13 rue Lincoln, 75008, Ph: 01 40 75 08 75.

Hotel Amour’s garden terrace.

Le 104 art space.

FUNERAL POMP Transforming a city funeral parlour into an artistic establishment? This somewhat absurd idea has come to fruition and is called Le 104. The 39,000 square metres of high vaulted 19thcentury iron provide a great opportunity for the 30 or so artists in residence – and an opening for the public into the workshop spaces to see the works being created. Add to this unusual encounter regular meetings of a more classical nature: theatre, exhibitions, concerts and shows. Shops, a café and a restaurant also add life to Le 104. 5 rue Curial, 75019, Ph: 01 53 35 50 00. GENIUS PLUS Jumping on board a boat and riding up canal Saint-Martin provides a bit of adventure that Parisians shouldn’t leave just to tourists to enjoy. This cruise turns back the clock and gives a unique view of the old Paris of Marcel Carné (a leading figure of French cinema) and of fishermen with their rods.

Jumping on board a boat and riding up canal SaintMartin turns back the clock and gives a unique view of the old Paris and of fishermen with their rods.

Take a boat cruise along canal Saint-Martin.

Departure is at 9.30am from the quai d’Orsay, going in the direction of the Louvre, the port de l’Arsenal and the Bastille and then in the shadow of a huge underground archway that passes under the Génie, where a crypt has been installed. Next you are out in the open and heading to the bassin de la Villette, passing through locks and swing bridges. FOLLOW THE ARROW It’s offbeat but still just as interesting as when it began. A place to wine, dine, dance or watch the show. 102 bis rue de Bagnolet, 75020, Ph: 01 44 64 01 02. ALLO BOhO This place is bohemian chic, and intellectuals love it, but it is also quiet, nicely laid out and, what’s more, has alfresco dining on the garden terrace. All set to become the hip hotel, the Hotel Amour plays on its name and its décor, which breaks all the rules relating to traditional hotels. 8 rue Navarin, 75009, Ph: 01 48 78 31 80.

Mod’s Hair is helping small businesses in Mongolia. Rosemarie North reports.

W

ith her gold wedge-heeled shoes and sleek bob, Julianne Liebeck doesn’t look as though she would be at home on the steppes of Mongolia. But when the director of Mod’s Hair Australia and New Zealand jetted off to France earlier this year to attend the glittering 100th birthday celebrations of French cosmetics giant L’Oréal, Gucci designs rubbed shoulders with yurtfriendly outfits in her suitcase. On the way to Paris, Liebeck stopped in Mongolia. She wanted to see what was happening with money she and Mod’s staff at five salons, in Christchurch, Auckland and Surfers Paradise, had sent there by foregoing a supplied lunch once a month. She signed up with World Vision three years ago after hearing about microfinance projects that enable people to invest in small businesses. “I loved the idea, having been a female trying to get into business, and I remember how hard it was for me to find financial backing.” In Mongolia, Liebeck visited women’s prisons, orphanages and a group of recipients using the project’s

small loans to develop sewing or agriculture. Their increased income enables them to hire staff, expand their business or improve their family’s nutrition or education. Mod’s small business partners are some of more than 4000 in Mongolia and 600,000 people in 47 countries worldwide benefiting from a World Vision partnership, VisionFund, which has a portfolio of $600 million. World Vision New Zealand spokesperson Kim Woodham says businesses such as Mod’s are vital to the project. “Self-made entrepreneurs are our main supporters of microfinance. The fact that their money is part of a revolving fund and provides a hand up, not a hand out, really appeals. People like the concept of empowerment, not dependency.” Liebeck says such programmes are desperately needed in a country as poor as Mongolia, which has an underdeveloped infrastructure, high inflation, homeless children, underfunded institutions and masses of people moving to the capital, Ulan Bator, in search of work. “A lot of it is about supporting women for as little as $30. They form solidarity groups and support each other, so their repayment rate is 98 per cent. “I really believe microfinance is the solution to poverty, the ongoing solution. It’s a small amount of money that really makes a difference to someone’s life.” Liebeck went to Mongolia with some preconceived ideas. “I run businesses and different operations in different countries. I know how difficult it is. But I was impressed with what a slick operation it is. There was no paperwork piled up. It was extremely efficient.”

A nomadic woman gets fresh milk for her family.

Elderly women don their summer dels, traditional Mongolian coats.

Liebeck found herself moved by the gratitude of people whose entrepreneurial spirit Mod’s had supported. “They really appreciate the opportunity. They weren’t there to blow the money, by any means. They really respected the money. When we went away, I felt I hadn’t given enough.” Seeing that small change can make a big difference has changed the atmosphere at Mod’s, which is a global chain. “My staff love being part of this. I think it’s a great culture to teach people. It creates a different culture in your business, people who care about people. That’s our industry. We need to care about our clients. Sometimes it’s hard for people to care about people who are a long way away. But there are clever ways you can make your money do good things.” So did the Mongolian experience ruin the glitz of Paris for Liebeck? “I certainly don’t shop quite how I used to,” she smiles. “But I don’t get caught up in the fluff of it all. I’m pretty grounded.” Liebeck is going to use the solid footing of Mod’s to give even more. In the future the business will donate a proportion of the profit from its own brand of haircare and develop ways for staff and clients to donate. “We’re going to send more of that money that we don’t really miss and make a difference, a huge difference. We’re not talking about huge amounts of money. It’s not such a hard thing to do really. “When I see the impact that it has on people – how your decisions can have such an incredible impact – it doesn’t seem fathomable why you wouldn’t do it,” she says. As seen in The Press.
