Tonight's game between LaSalle's LANCERS and Moeller's FIGHTING CRUSADERS marks the league opener for both teams and, judging from the performances turned in by these two undefeated elevens in their first two victories, the outcome could very well remain in doubt right down to the final gun. While LaSalle was chalking up impressive victories over visiting Portsmouth, 25-0, and public league contender Walnut Hills, 36-18, Moeller was shutting out perennial County-League power, Princeton, 14-0, and registering a come-from-behind 26-8 victory over Hughes speedy city title aspirants. LaSalle, like Moeller, is fielding its third senior team, and for the first time is a legitimate title contender in the rough tough Greater Cincinnati League. A host of big speedy backs are spearheaded by junior fullback Jeff Audia, and halfback Mike Murphy. Quarterback Harry Smith has been the complete field leader in his first two contests, running up front center Tom Backhus, of all-league caliber is ably supported by senior Guards Den Johnson and John Stigler, and junior tackle Jack Harpri ng.

(

Defensively, the work of end Jim Schwertman, Tackle Don Wiehe, middle guard Fred Shriner, and linebacker Jerry Mouch has been complemented by the heads-up play of returning starters Frank Wise and Jim Davis in the defensive backfield. The unit has surrendered but on TD in the first two games. With two undefeated legitimate GCL title contenders anxious to open league play with a victory, the fans at Sycamore Stadium are certain to be treated to a hard-fought bruising game tonight, and, regardless of the outcome should go home well satisfied that they saw a tough football game.

Tonight's Greater Cincinnati League Contest pits two undefeated powers against each other in what looms as a big hurdle in each team's quest of the league title. Last week Moeller's FIGHTING CRUSADERS scored a convincing win over previously unbeaten LaSalle, 21-0, throttling the high-powered Lancer offense. Roger Bacon's SPARTANS in the meantime overpowered undefeated St. Xavier, 26-12, and the defending co-champions served notice to future opponents that they will be tough to reckon with.

C

In route to their third straight victory, the first two at the expense of Cleveland Padua and Courter Tech, the Spartans exhibited a versatile attack ably led by senior quarterback Ron Benjamin. With Dave Albrinck, a 6'4", 215 pounder combining speed and power at fullback, and halfback Habitzreuther supplying elusiveness, Bacon's rushing offense was more than St. X. could handle. Up front huge 270 pound tackle Bill Mouch, playing like his all-state predecessor, Dave Foley, spearheads a big rugged line. Johnson at tackle and Brinckman at end are two of Mouch's tough supporting cast. Quarterback Steve Bien helped pass Moeller to victory in the LaSalle game, completing T D aerials to ends Don Bergman and Pat O'Keefe. Fullback Dave Wilcoxson slipped through holes opened by veteran center Tom Backhus, Guards Den Johnson and John Stigler, and tackles John Harpring and Mike Smyth. The Crusader defense, led by Fred Shriner, Linebackers Jerry Mouch and Nick Haverkos, and defensive backs Frank Wise and Buddy Jackson, contained LaSalle's offensive throughout the game, registering their second shutout of the young season. Roger Bacon's offense has been unstoppable in the first three games, and Moeller's tough but inexperienced ccew wi II have their work cut out for them. With Bacon's offense, averaging four touchdowns a game, certain to keep the crowd exicited, and Moeller seeking its first victory ever against Bacon in their young history, tonight's G.C.L. battle shapes up as a real crowd-pleaser.

Moeller's all-victorio.us Crusaders host a hungry McNicholas Eleven tonight at Sycamore Stadium. The Rackets, with a 2-3 season record, but winless in the GCL come into tonight's game against the State-Ranked Crusaders with a nothing-to-lose and everything to gain attitude, and, in a league notorious for upsets, Jim Nieman's underated battlers would like nothing better than to derail Moeller's drive towards their first GCL Championship. Leading McNicholas is a true triple-threat performer, Paul Schroeder, a brillant quarterback who has sparkled even in the Rocket's three losses. Aiding Schroeder, who keeps the defenses honest with his ability to run and throw equally well, are guard Tom Seta and Tackle Tim Smith, consistent blockers all season. These two spearhead a light but tough Rocket forward wall. Defensively the Rockets have been erratic at times containing well. Mistakes have proved costly all season. But no team has outhit them, ond if they play as a solid unit, they can cause havoc with the strongest offenses. In spite of the inconsistency of the unit, inside linebacker Bob Kausche rand defensive tackle Don Schmidt have been strady performers all year and hope to rally the team in what could be the toughest test to date. Moeller's victory express was almost sidetracked upon Price Hill last week when linebacker Nick Haverkos made a last minute interception, nipping Elder's second half bid for on upset. The Crusaders squeezed by the fired-up P~nthers 8-6, scoring in the second quarter on Jim Malarkey's 10 yard blast, and the twa-point clincher came on a pass from Steve Bien, improving with every game to steady end Pat 0 'Keefe. Plagued by fumbles, penalties and short punts, the Crusaders spent much of the second half bottled up in their own territory. With their backs constantly to the wall, Moeller defenders fought grimly to stave off Elders too-close-for-comfort bid for victory. Haverko's interception was just one of many big plays these proud Crusaders made in clutch situations. No one could be singled out as the difference as the defensive elevn sparkled as a unit Offensively once again fullback Dave Wilcoxson and halfbacks Jim Malarkey and Jack Manahan slipped through holes carved aut of Elder's big tough front line by center Tam Backus, Guards John Sngler and Den Johnson. And, tackles Jack Harpring ond Bob DeAngelis. Moeller's sustained drive of 95 yards far their TD was a great team effort, with every player contributing key efforts at one time or another. The Rockets ore ready tQ spring an upset and hope to catch the Crusaders in a let-dawn after backto-bock victories over perenail league-powers, Bacon and Elder. The Crusaders, bidding far their first GCL title, realize McNicholas represents a major threat to their gaol and are prepared for a tough fight. The stage is set for an upset -one team with every·thing to lase and the ather with everything to gain. It should be quite a night of football.

GRADS of the Class of '64 and '65

Tadays clash between the hosting Moeller Crusaders and the Bombers of St. Xavier will be a big one far bath schools. Tom Ballaban's St. Xavier Team has amassed a 5-2 record, their last victory being a satisfying 8-0 shutout of La Salle's offensively strong Lancers in the GCL double header last Sunday. The Bombers' two losses came at the hands of Elder and Bacon, bath highly rated elevens, and in neither game was St. Xavier outfought- with a break or two they could have won both. Numbered among their victims are stole rated Richmond, lndiono, ond city title contender, Withrow. Ably guided by sharp-shooting QB Jerry R~ndolph, the St. Xavier Offense has shown flashes of real explosiveness this year. Fullback Greg Delmar and halfback Steve Morgan are both genuine threats from any place an the field, possessing that rare combination of speed and power. Up front tackle Ron Overbeck and guard Jim Knecht have consistently blasted holes in defensive lines and end Tom Gruenwald is a quick, sure handed receiver. Great standouts in last week's defensive effort were tackles Rick Weber, Tom O'Brien and linebacker Jack Podesta. With their defense showing signs of jelling the Bomber offense is sure to profit. The more often they get the ball, the more headaches their explosiveness will cause opponent's defenses. The Crusaders took a 15-6 halftime lead over unbeaten Dayton Chaminade into the locker room then made it stand up in a bruising scoreless second half. The fans at U. D. stadium were treated to a battle of fullbacks as Moellers Dave Wilcoxson outshone Chaminade's Gary Cousins, who was averaging over 100 yards per game. The pinpojnt passing of Steve Bien to ends Pat O'Keefe and Don Bergman again complemented Moeller's yardage eating ground attack. Guards John Stigler and Den Johnson and tackle Jack Harpring once again dug out the stubborn Chaminade linemen poly after play. Defensively Tom Bachus backed up the line in spectacular fashion time and again crashing into an Eagle back to prevent a gain. Ends Joe Mescher and Jim Schwertmen harrassed Chaminades great QB, Tim Sharkey, either throwing him for a loss or causing him to hurry his tass and miss the target. Steady Jim Davis, supported by Frank Wise ond Buddy Jackson blanketed the Eagle receivers all afternoon, and Moellers defense secondary once came up with a key interception late in the game. Moeller, undefeated and driving hard toward their first G.C.L. title must hurdle this tough St. Xavier team in order to assure themselves of at leost a share of the championship. The Babmers on the other hand will

be out to spoil lv\oellers season as well as exact revenge for last season's

upset loss to the Crusaders. Bath teams are certain to be in for a long hard fought afternoon of football.

This afternoon's grid contest pits the Covoliers from Purcell ogoinst Moeller's Fighting Crusaders in what has developed as a fierce but friendly rivalry between two Morionist Sister Schools. Purcell tokes o very misleading 3-5 record into the game against the undefeated Crusaders - but previous games go by the board when these two teems go ot it. Art DelConte's bottlers tackled a tough schedule opening against two teems thot ore still unbeaten ond highly ranked. Hamilton Catholic ond mighty fourth-ranked Middletown. After consecutive wins over Campbell County ond McNicholas, whi.ch sow the Covolier tremendous backfield speed assert itself in. on explosive offensive attock, the Covoliers suffered three setbacks in the powerful G.C.L. to LoSolle, Bacon, ond Elder. The Elder gome could hove eos.ily gone to Purcell hod a couple of breaks gone their woy. Quarterback Mike Cutis once more provided the spark os Purcell romped over Dayton Correll in their Homecoming lost Sunday, 35- 12. The blasts of fullback Ed Komphoke, who hos been tremendous even in defect, numbering among his goins a 73- yorder against Elder, ond the outside speed of Mike Infantino help account for the Cavalier explosiveness. Guard Lorry Harris, a strong, steady two-way performer hos been supported offensively by Ron Cresley at guard ond Dick Voet at tackle. Defensively Joe Come ron at inside backer, frwin Hi II at tackle ond Jim Ruebusch at corner hove been solid performers all season, os has Harris at middle guard. Lost Sunday the Crusaders called on big Dove Wilcoxson for yardage, ond the powerful fullback responded against the St. Xavier Bombers with a great 120 yard performance, scoring one TD on o 44 yord romp, ond setting up another when Jock Monahan twisted his way unscathed through St. Xavier for a 10-yord 4th quarter TD breaking a tie and enabling the Crusaders to defect St. Xavier 14-6, remaining unbeaten. Co-captains Tom Bockhus ot center ond John Stigler at guard, along with running mote Den Johnson, uprooted the stubborn St. Xavier defenders time after time, providing the holes for Wilcoxson and Monohon. Sticky-fingered Don Bergman ot end supplied more heroics with two clutch catches. Backing up the line with ferocity, Tom Bockhus led the Crusaders stingy defense once again, as Mauch, Mescher, Hoverkos, Wiehe, Stanforth, Schwertmon, Shriner, Davis, Jackson, ond Wise throttled the St. Xavier attock completely- the Bomber TD coming on a 53 yd. punt return. The Crusaders clinched a tie for the league championship with lost week's victory. It con help goin the undisputed championship if they con carve out a victory over the hungry up-set minded Cavaliers. Purcell will be going oil out to spoil the Crusader's bid for supremacy, and previous records will hove no bearing on whot will certainly be a real crowd pleoser.

Tonight's game between the BIG RED of HUGHES and The FIGHTING CRUSADERS of Moeller promis~s to be a hard-fought inter-league clash.

~;v

'.

) • • (I

With many of last year's starters returning, Hughes has good cause for optimism.() : ; in their quest for this years city league crown. >q

·¥

r. •;:

With an experienced line opening holes for what could be the city's speediest backfield Hughes will be very dangerous from any point on the field.

.,\

·:

~~

Moeller's Fighting Crusaders have many holes to fill, graduating the entire backfield from last year's 8-2 team.

,-.. }

QB Steve Bein has been thorwing well, and hopes to measure up to his predecessor the graduated Jerry Buckmaster, now throwing for X. U. fresh.

tr )

John Stigler and Tom Backus and Pat O'Keefe, returning starters lend experiencH to a line otherwise completely depleted through graduation.

ll

Defensively, corner line backer Jimmy Davis starting for his 4th year is joined Frank Wise, Fred Shriner and Jerry Mouch as returning starters.

o~··

f '·
