Welcome to Our New Faculty and Staff

Moeller Family, The 2022-2023 school year was nothing short of incredible. 206 young men graduated from Moeller and for the past year they led with integrity and honor. Throughout the year, the Men of Moeller were true examples of our core values: Build the Family, Hold the Door, and Earn the Shield. Day in and day out, every member of the Moeller Family helped to support and enhance these values. Whether it was a student helping a visiting eighth grader make his way through the hallways, or a young man pushing an injured friend in his wheelchair, helping others is the way of life at Moeller. Through the lessons of last year’s interdisciplinary theme, students built a better understanding of what civility means; they learned that it is not enough to just be kind, but they need to stand up for themselves and others…this is what Build the Family is all about. While we continue to live our values, we also continue to grow our school. Construction on the Paul E. Flaig Performing Arts Center is in full swing and the Innovation Hub will take shape next year. These new spaces will not only enhance our physical space, but they will also create incredible learning opportunities beyond the standard classroom. In these new spaces, students will be able to perform, create, experience, and evolve. We set our sights on the new school year and continue to live out our Mission – Catholic. Marianist. Forming our Students into Remarkable Men.

IN REVIEW Remarkable Success in Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry, English Literature and Composition and Statistics In their sophomore, junior and/or senior years, students may participate in college-level or AP courses. Students must take a standardized exam at the end of each course for college credit. Last year, 368 sophomores, juniors and seniors sat for a total of 679 AP exams. AP Chemistry, AP English Literature and Composition and AP Statistics are three of our 23 AP classes offered to students. Students

Last year 368 sophomores, juniors and seniors sat for a total of 679 AP exams enrolled in Kevin Conlon’s AP Chemistry course, Justin Claypool’s AP English Literature and Composition course and Jim Prugh’s AP Statistics course achieved a 100% pass rate, meaning they are eligible for college credit. Lindy DeMaria’s AP English Literature and Composition course achieved a 95% pass rate. These results are remarkable when compared to the global passing averages (Chemistry — 75%, English Literature and Composition — 77%, Statistics — 60%).

Midwest College Tour Twenty-eight freshman, sophomore and junior Catino scholars and Chaminade Global scholars participated in a Midwest college tour over Easter break. Marshall Hyzdu ’96 (president), Mike Shaffer (dean of student life) and Kristen Merica (counseling department chair) accompanied them. Students visited campuses and met with college admissions representatives from the University of Chicago, Indiana University, Northwestern University, University of Notre Dame and Purdue University. Kristen Merica said, “These tours offer high-achieving students with opportunities to see different campuses, learn about opportunities at the postsecondary level and, most important, empower them to set aspirational collegiate goals.” The Midwest tour is the first in the series of three geographical tour locations. The tours will provide students an opportunity to visit over 15 campuses in total before applying to colleges in their senior year. In the spring, students will have an opportunity to visit Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, United States Naval Academy, University of Virginia and Washington and Lee University as part of the Washington D.C./Virginia region tour.

Molecular Modeling Team In March, the Molecular Modeling Team presented “The Role of ATG9 in Phagophore Formation During Autophagy” at the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Convention in Seattle. The presentation focused on the mechanism of constructing an autophagosome for the transport and ultimate destruction of cellular debris, worn out mitochondria or infecting microbes. The team mentor was Dr. JaiJie Diao, Department of Cancer Biology at the UC College of Medicine. Jake Allen ’26, Connor Connolly ’26, Weston Gruber ’24, Ethan Hawryschuk ’24, Donald Kaplan ’24, Brandon McCloud ’26, Gavin Poetker ’24 and John-Paul Schuette ’23 served as presenters in Seattle with science teacher Dan Shannon. Other members of the team included Jared Johnston ’24, Wyatt Medley ’25 and Owen Speed ’26. In a commitment to providing REALearning opportunities for students, Dan Shannon is teaching two sections of a Molecular Biology Research course this year — a hands-on scientific research course focused on proteins that have not yet been characterized. Brett Dehyle ’23 assisted Dan Shannon with the course development as part of an independent study in molecular biology. This course will use the most current analytic and augmented reality visualization technologies as part of the curriculum.

The Leaders in Educating Young Men Blessed Chaminade wrote, “New times demand new methods.” At Moeller, we are living his words. In service to this commitment, we continue to evolve our academic

philosophy of REALearning: relational, experiential and authentic learning. As an all-male school, we intentionally design learning opportunities to teach the way young men learn best. Over the summer, Eric Eble (English department chair and Speech and Debate Team coach) participated in the International Boys School Coalition (IBSC) Action Research cohort. The two-year cohort is a small, selective group of educators from across the globe, researching and AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND | JULY 5–8 developing projects based WESTLAKE BOYS HIGH SCHOOL on the research theme “Balanced Boys: Promoting Healthy Masculinity Beyond 2023 IBSC ANNUAL CONFERENCE the Classroom.” The cohort selected Eric based on his action research proposal: How does cocreation of self-assessment rubrics encourage high school boys to integrate feedforward into performance in competitive speech and debate? Eric traveled to Auckland, New Zealand, this summer (through the generosity of John Weinkam ’69) for the annual IBSC conference. Eric said, “action research through the IBSC gave me a global perspective on education by connecting me with educators from four continents — all dedicated to improving as teachers of boys. Yet it also helped me locally, giving me a means to use research to hone my practice within the classroom and speech and debate team.”

SUMMERTIME

ummer is a time for fun with friends and family, and for rising high school seniors to attend the Marianist LIFE (Living in Faith Experience) Week. Held at the Bergamo Center in Dayton, this sixday retreat invites LIFE students from all over the country to gather together to deepen their personal faith, build and grow in community and explore their leadership skills.

The Moeller/MND LIFE group has seen huge growth, averaging 50 students per meeting. The Moeller/Mount Notre Dame (MND) LIFE group sent 12 students to the 2023 LIFE Week. Selected by adult moderators (who also serve as faculty and staff at both schools), these young men and women comprised the first group to include representatives from both institutions. It is no surprise that the Moeller/MND LIFE group had the highest retreat participation rate. Over the last two years, this program has seen huge growth with an average of 50 students per meeting with both schools equally represented. The growth of the Moeller/MND LIFE group was a result of the pandemic when students needed a safe place to come together in community. Steve Joebgen, Moeller campus minister, explained that “students from both schools felt like they didn’t have an accessible space to meet up in fellowship. They wanted to be with each other in person, not just virtually. Our LIFE community became the space where they could be their authentic selves and grow in faith together. The success really belongs to our student members because they took ownership and shared their excitement with peers. We were thrilled with the opportunity to take this enthusiasm to the next level at LIFE Week.” LIFE Week gives students an experience of small faith communities, sacraments, prayer, leadership development, social justice education and fun. The retreat began in 1970 and includes three different weeks throughout the summer in order to encourage as many LIFE groups to participate as possible. There are approximately 40 institutions actively involved with LIFE in 10 states, Puerto Rico and Ireland.

IS THE L.I.F.E. Reflecting on her LIFE Week experience, MND senior Kennedy Loy said, “I loved building my faith and forming new relationships in a supportive community. It helped me gain a new understanding of how I can live out my faith every day.” Moeller senior Kyler Lunsford added, “The LIFE retreat was a phenomenal experience that allowed me to grow in my faith and my friendships. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.” MND senior Danica Burt said, “The retreat made me feel connected to a larger community. I was honored to represent our group.” As part of the summer program, each LIFE team creates a mission statement to serve as a guide for the academic year. The Moeller/MND LIFE mission statement for 2023-24 is to integrate faith and service to connect communities through Mary’s example of kindness, compassion and courage. And, while the retreat’s goals are to grow faith and leadership skills, the journey doesn’t end on the last day. The retreatants were blessed and commissioned to lead their peers once back at their home schools. The 12 Moeller/MND students have taken on this challenge and the group met in August to outline the first semester’s agenda which includes meetings every other Wednesday during the school year. “After spending time with this special group of students, I see their passion and dedication for LIFE,” said Allison Oakley, Moeller counselor and one of three adult moderators who attended the retreat. “I know we have an incredible year of spiritual growth and fellowship ahead of us.”

Mr. Caleb Childers

Mr. Caleb Childers joins the social studies department as the AP Modern World History teacher. Caleb holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Xavier University, Master of Arts in Education from Pacific Lutheran University and Master of Arts in Theology from the University of Notre Dame. At Pope John Paul II Prep School in Nashville, TN, he taught AP World History, served as the housemaster for the House of Peter (within their school system) and coached cross country and lacrosse.

Mr. Peter Gettings teaches Precalculus BC Honors, Geometry Honors and Geometry CP1. Peter holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Dayton. He taught high school mathematics at William V. Fisher Catholic High School, where he received the Teacher of the Year Award. Most recently, he taught junior high mathematics and religion at Cardinal Pacelli School.

Mrs. Clare Harris

Mrs. Clare Harris teaches Precalculus CP1 and Algebra CP1. Clare holds a Master of Education in Mathematics from Mount St. Joseph University. She worked as a mathematics specialist at Mount Notre Dame High School and taught mathematics at Seton High School. She is married to Kevin Harris, Moeller Class of 2002.

Mrs. Allison Oakley joins the counseling department as the Pillar house counselor. Allison holds a Master of Education in School Counseling from the University of Cincinnati. She completed her counseling internship at Moeller and served as a school counselor at West Clermont High School. She is also involved in leadership roles with the Marianist LIFE program.

Mr. Adam McLain joins the Student Services department as the sophomore intervention specialist. Adam holds a Bachelor of Arts in K-12 Special Education from Northern Kentucky University. Adam has over 13 years of experience as an intervention specialist in the Norwood school district. Adam has been a member of the Moeller family since 2017 as a varsity assistant football coach.

Dr. Denise Krueger teaches Multivariable Calculus and Ordinary Differential Equations CCP, AP Calculus BC, Algebra II and Trigonometry CP1. Denise holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Xavier University and a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Virginia Tech. She served as a math professor and department chair at Mount St. Joseph University for over 15 years and held leadership roles in local Catholic high schools.

Mr. Michael Walker joins the performing arts department as the Moeller/MND band director and a teacher. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Instrumental Music Education from North Dakota State University and is completing his Master of Music in Conducting this winter. Michael is a veteran band director and started his musical career playing the tuba in the Marine Corps Field Bands, which gave him the opportunity to play and conduct in over 20 countries.

Mrs. Erin Brandyberry joins the academic administration team as the director of innovation and curriculum. She will lead the direction of the Moeller Innovation Hub, and work with the faculty to implement REALearning in the Hub in a tangible way. Erin holds a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University. She brings nearly 15 years of experience in educational program administration, focusing on experiential and interdisciplinary learning. Most recently, she served as associate director at Miami University’s Department of Emerging Technology in Business and Design.

oogle-search “hub” and you will see pictures of an internet cable connector, as well as a definition: “the central part of a wheel, rotating on or with the axle, and from which the spokes radiate.” Though these definitions may lack immediate connection to Moeller’s current construction project — the Innovation Hub — they are certainly apt ways of looking at a space that will connect Moeller students to the web and beyond and help them form new ideas of digital citizenship and technological development. Situated at the south end of the area formerly known as the Mary Courtyard, this new wing will fundamentally transform how students engage with class content and prepare themselves for the constant flux that constitutes the technological and business landscapes they will face beyond Moeller. As provost, Dr. Christine Brookbank says, “We have such talented students and we don’t always tap into their specific areas of interest and their gifts.” She continues, “The Hub will give students an opportunity to shine as thinkers, as tinkers, as collaborators. They will be co-constructors of the process. The education system is not traditionally set up for this learning process.” The Innovation Hub will provide plenty of tools to devise solutions for 21st century issues, as it features a suite of purpose-built rooms: a design lab, potentially for robotics; huddle rooms, for group work; a pitch room, which functions as a student-run board room; recording and broadcasting spaces for podcasts; and an emerging technologies space featuring augmented reality technology, such as Z-space. Though the space may seem suited only for emerging technologies and business, the humanities have an integral part in its construction. Jacquelyn Sommer and Bobby Whitacre ‘11, Moeller’s art teachers, will have a floor-and-a-half of classrooms that will include a kiln. According to Dr. Brookbank, the Hub will also eventually include more virtual reality to enhance humanities connections. “Doing this well,” she says, “includ[es] humanities brains, science brains, and business brains.” This building will exemplify Moeller’s vision for student success. “It continues to provide us with more opportunities that align with our academic philosophy of REALearning,” Dr. Brookbank says. “This is intentional. You are not just driven by extrinsic motivation of a grade, and you understand yourself as a learner. This space continues investment in the epicenter of REALearning.” This investment also includes hiring Mrs. Erin Brandyberry as director of innovation and curriculum. She comes to Moeller after serving as associate director in Miami University’s Department of Emerging Technology in Business and Design, where she managed their Digital Innovation programs and the new Master of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Technology, a transdisciplinary degree integrating online and experiential

learning. Mrs. Brandyberry shares Dr. Brookbank’s excitement about student learning. “I can’t wait to see students engage in dynamic, experiential, project-based learning,” she says. “Whether that’s manifested through pitch competitions, VR-enabled anatomy exploration, expanded recording and broadcasting capabilities, the student-run endowment or other intersections of art, business, and technology.” Mrs. Brandyberry will certainly be a driver in these endeavors. “I see my role primarily as a coach and a connector, celebrating the innovative academics already offered, collaborating with faculty to expand multidisciplinary curriculum offerings, and engaging with students and the broader community to identify and explore real-world problems,” she says. “I am so excited to guide a culture of critical curiosity, creation, and collaboration among the Moeller family.” Clearly, with Dr. Brookbank and Mrs. Brandyberry at the helm, Moeller will not merely gain a new building, but a pathway to engage in living the Characteristics of a Marianist Education, particularly Adaptation and Change. Reflecting on her excitement about the Hub, Dr. Brookbank focuses on teacher success as a pathway to forming our students. “It gives our teachers more perspectives on celebrating innovative work that is happening,” Dr. Brookbank says. “This will help us find microsystems where we can cross disciplines. Erin is dedicated to help the faculty understand how they can teach the Moeller mindset and how to develop learners for the future. That’s what excites me.” Mrs. Brandyberry puts it even more plainly, “Ultimately, I am most excited to see the students and faculty make the Innovation Hub a home.” The opening of the Innovation Hub is planned for fall 2024.

Named Scholarship Donors

BUILD THE FAMILY

he Named Scholarship Program celebrates the past, present and future of the Moeller Family. Donors partner with this program to honor a loved one, or to celebrate their passion for Moeller while students are given the opportunity to receive a Moeller education. The investment made to this program helps secure the long-term economic viability of Moeller High School for generations to come. The first named scholarship was established in 2000, led by Br. Ron Luksic, S.M. As a member of the admissions team, Brother Ron met many families who needed financial assistance to send their sons to Moeller. He knew alumni and parents of alumni would hear the call and open the door for these young men. Under his guidance, the Named Scholarship Program has grown to include approximately 140 scholarships generating more than $500,000 in annual financial assistance for students who might not otherwise be able to attend Moeller. It was Brother Ron who first mentioned the idea of establishing a named scholarship to Steve and Jeri Lynch,

parents of Tim ’05 and John ’13. “Brother educated us on the financial challenge faced by so many families who wish to send their sons to Moeller,” said Jeri. “We are fortunate to be in a position to help them realize their dream.” Through their sons and their sons’ classmates, the Lynches experienced firsthand the lasting, positive impact Moeller has on young men. They saw the result of Moeller teaching students the value of hard work and perseverance, and how the Men of Moeller carry this with them through adulthood. The opportunity for more deserving young men to benefit from a Marianist education drove Steve and Jeri

to create their own named scholarship. Kyle Havens ’24 has been the student-recipient of this scholarship for the past three years. “Having the support of Mr. and Mrs. Lynch means a great deal,” said Kyle. “My parents work hard, and the scholarship helps lighten the load for us. We are forever grateful.” The relationship formed between the Lynches and Kyle is what sets the Moeller Named Scholarship Program apart from any other. With Moeller’s core value of Build the Family in action, this program seeks to nurture positive connections between donor and recipient. The Lynches and Kyle have spent quality time together at the annual Scholarship Breakfast and correspond regularly throughout the school year. Steve and Jeri cheer Kyle on from the sidelines of Moeller basketball games, and they will celebrate Kyle’s graduation at the Senior Scholarship Luncheon in April. “We are thrilled with the opportunity to help outstanding young men like Kyle in their formative years,” said Steve. “We look forward to watching them grow and mature as they move on to the next stage of their lives.” The Lynches have three more important reasons for their continued investment in Moeller. “We have three grandsons, Oliver ’38, Remington ’40 and James ’42,” said Jeri. “We hope they will make their way back to Cincinnati and Moeller. We want to make sure the Lynch/Moeller legacy continues far into the future.”

All scholarship awards are based on verified financial need, scholarship criteria, and committee recommendations. In and Out Scholarships: Gifts can be made for a scholarship, which will be awarded the following school year. The minimum donor commitment is $2,500 per year for four years. Quasi-Endowed Scholarships: A quasi-endowed scholarship is an annual giving plan designed to award a renewable scholarship to a student from the annual gift. Additional funds donated each year are given with the goal to eventually endow the scholarship with a donor contribution total of $50,000. Endowed Scholarships: Endowed scholarships are named scholarships that are funded with either a one-time gift ($50,000 or more) or a series of gifts over time with the purpose of increasing the principal to the threshold level. The original investment does not have to come from a single donor but must meet the requirements for awarding a minimum of $2,500 to a deserving student. The interest generated from these endowments makes significant financial assistance possible and helps secure the long-term financial viability of a Catholic education and Moeller High School for generations to come.

Tax Credit Scholarships Put Tax Money to Work at Moeller

2022 IMPACT

Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) is a tax-credit scholarship which provides taxpayers the opportunity to designate Ohio Tax Payment to support tuition assistance.

$80,000 in CEF-SGO scholarships Awarded to 15 Moeller students

The Catholic Education Foundation for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati (CEF) has been certified by Ohio as a SGO. In keeping with the mission of CEF and the regulations of a SGO, CEF-SGO provides need-based scholarships to students in grades K-12 that attend the Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, including Moeller High School. Supporting students and their formation through Catholic Education is a great way to share our blessings and faith with younger generations. Catholic Education supporters who donate to the CEF-SGO may be able to claim a dollar-for-dollar, non-refundable tax credit on their state income tax return for up to $750 per single donor or up to $1,500 if married and filing jointly. (See Section 5747.73 of the Ohio Revised Code.)

1960 society The 1960 Society is an invitation to all members of the Moeller Family to secure Moeller’s future

through planned giving commitments and ensure that the school’s sacred Mission lives on forever. Leaving a legacy to those who follow begins with a conversation about how your passions and interests align with Moeller, our Mission and the Men of Moeller. Let’s explore together opportunities to leverage the power of the Moeller Endowment to advance Moeller’s important Mission into the future.

Charitable Gift Annuities

Estate Gifts

A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) at Moeller affords benefactors the opportunity to make an impactful gift while also benefiting from a partial income tax deduction and the financial security of fixed annual payments for the duration of their lives, backed by the full assets of the high school.

An estate gift is quite often the simplest and most recognizable way for a member of the Moeller Family to realize their charitable goals and typically provides an avenue for alumni, parents and friends to have an impact at Moeller beyond what would be possible during their lifetime.

As with estate gifts and Charitable Remainder Trusts, benefactors can dedicate the purpose and use of their gift at Moeller after they pass away.

An estate gift can be made by including Moeller High School in the terms of a will or revocable trust, or by naming Moeller as the beneficiary of a retirement plan, like an IRA, while allowing benefactors to maintain complete use and control of their assets for the duration of their lives.

Charitable Remainder Trusts A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) presents members of the Moeller Family a “win-win” giving option, allowing alumni, parents and friends of the high school to benefit personally from the performance of Moeller’s endowment and make an extraordinary gift. Gifts to a Moeller CRT are investing in the Endowment. Members of the Moeller Family receive a variable, annual income stream that reflects the endowment’s year-over-year performance for the duration of their lives or a term of years, all without the assessment of any in-house management or administrative fees. When the term of a CRT ends, the balance of the CRT may be dedicated by the benefactors, either for Moeller’s greatest need or for a particular purpose indicated by the family. Those who establish a CRT at Moeller may also benefit from an immediate income tax deduction, avoid immediate recognition of capital gains taxes for gifts of appreciated stock and reduce estate taxes.

While these gifts can be modified at any time, sharing one’s estate gift intentions allows Moeller to plan for the future and paves the way for benefactors to dedicate the use of their estate gifts either for areas of Moeller’s greatest need or for a particular purpose indicated by the family.

IRA Charitable Rollover and Real Estate Benefactors who are 70 ½ or older can reduce or eliminate the recognition of income from their IRAs and satisfy required minimum distributions by making a qualified distribution of up to $100,000 per year from their IRAs directly to Moeller High School. Gifts of long-term appreciated assets to Moeller (including real estate and privately held business interests), via outright gift or to fund a Charitable Remainder Trust, allow benefactors to minimize or completely eliminate the capital gains that would have been recognized had the benefactors sold these assets.

1960 Society Members:

Man of Moeller, Doug Groh ’84 Gives Back Many historians would say that the 1960s remains a landmark decade, a watershed moment in time that altered the course of history and played a critical role in where we stand today. The 1960s had a very significant impact on life – it is the decade of the foundation of Archbishop Moeller High School. Under the sage guidance of Bro. Lawrence Evelslage, S.M., Moeller opened the doors in Doug Groh ’84 September 1960 to the first freshman class. The investment made in the few years that followed by the Archdiocese, the Marianist Community, the students that have since become valued alumni and the families that put their faith in a Marianist education laid the groundwork for Moeller’s success today. Looking toward the future, the 1960 Society – Moeller’s planned giving initiative – was named to honor the men and women who were part of this decade of new beginnings and incredible opportunities. Established in 2010, the 1960 Society invites alumni, family and friends of Moeller to provide support for the school in their wills, trusts, life income gifts, retirement plans, life insurance policies and other legacy gifts. Doug Groh ’84 made the commitment to become a member of the 1960 Society because it enabled him to align his financial resources with his values. “Estate planning is certainly not considered an enjoyable activity,” said Doug, “however, it does offer an opportunity to make a powerful impact.” A charitable bequest presents numerous advantages to the benefactor as well as the beneficiary. In addition to tax benefits, planned giving allows donors to leave a legacy and realize their charitable goals by making a difference at Moeller beyond what might be possible during their lifetime. To Moeller, a charitable bequest ensures the Mission that found its roots in 1960 will continue to grow strong far into the future. “My 1960 Society legacy gift supports tuition assistance,” said Doug. “I view the growth of the endowment to be where my passion lies. He is a member of the Marianist Society at Moeller and understands the importance of giving back so that others may experience a Marianist education.

ATHLETIC Football The football program had a memorable season in 2022. With the ninth-toughest schedule in the country, Moeller finished the regular season with a 9-1 record. Their only loss was to eventual state champion St. Edward 6-0 at Shea Stadium. The team finished the season undefeated in the league and was crowned GCL Champions. They entered the postseason tournament ranked first in the southwest region, defeating #16 Hamilton 39-14 and GCL rival #9 St. Xavier 28-7. For the second consecutive year, the team faced Springfield in the state semifinals, losing to the Wildcats 28-24.

Soccer The soccer season was a great success at all three levels, notching double-digit wins. Our varsity team reached the state final four for the second time in five years. This makes three regional championship appearances in five years — more than any other division one boys schools in Cincinnati. Not only did all three levels have fantastic success on the field, but they also excelled off the field, participating in many community service projects as a team, taking part in the 988 initiative for suicide prevention and earning good grades in the classroom.

Golf The golf team finished in the top five at the St. John’s Invitational, Springboro Invitational and the Upper Arlington Invitational. Moeller followed up with a secondplace finish at the GCL championships, narrowly falling to St. Xavier. Not only did the Crusaders finish second in the GCL, but they also defeated Elder to win the El-Moe Cup. Finally, the Crusaders placed third in the sectionals and seventh at districts to finish a remarkable season.

Indoor Track The indoor track and field program continues to grow. Thirty student-athletes participated during the indoor season, which runs from January to March. The team traveled and competed at some of the nation’s top venues, including the World Class facility in Louisville, the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center and the Spire Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio, which hosted the State Indoor Championships. In addition, the team traveled to Ohio State University for the Buckeye Qualifier, Cedarville University for the Yellow Jacket Tune Up Invitational and the Mount Saint Joseph Invitational.

Cross Country The cross country team had a record-breaking year. The program captured team titles at the Jim Murray Memorial Invitational and Coldwater Lions Club Invitational. Other outstanding team finishes included a runner-up finish at the Lebanon Warrior Invitational and a third-place finish at the Midwest Catholic Cross Country Championships.   The program made great strides during the season as the team finished runner-up in the GCL, which was the highest finish in school history, and won a fourth-place finish in the district championships, which qualified them for the regional championships for the first time since 2014.

Wrestling The wrestling team finished the season in 18th place at the state tournament with two state placers. It also had two additional state qualifiers and one state alternate, who are all returning next season. The team also had six GCL champions. This was the third consecutive season that the team also earned the distinction of being Team Academic All-Ohio with a team GPA of 3.58. With four returning state placers and one returning state alternate, this young team looks to take a big step forward in the 2023-2024 season.

YEAR IN REVIEW Bowling The varsity bowling team finished the season with an 8-13 overall record. It had its first GCL wins against St. Xavier and La Salle in over three seasons. The Crusaders had some high achievers over the course of the season, with four members earning all GCL Conference awards. Swim & Dive The swim team finished with a 4-1 overall record. The Crusaders had first place finishes against Lakota West, Lakota East, Indian Hill and Anderson. Moeller placed second in the GCL South behind St. Xavier, third at sectionals and ninth at districts. Basketball The basketball team wrapped up the season with an 18-8 record. It finished second in the GCL and was district runner-up in the state tournament. Varsity also won the St. Pius X Christmas Classic in Atlanta, Georgia, with a victory over host school St. Pius X in the championship game. The Crusaders had two players named to the first Team All-GCL South, and two more named to the second Team All-GCL South. Tennis The varsity tennis team had an impressive season, finishing with a stellar 17-5 overall record, ranking seventh place in the city. This success led to securing the second-place spot in the highly competitive GCL South. The team also showcased its skills in the GCTCA Coaches Classic Tournament, where it claimed second place, with only one point out of first place. Overall, the varsity tennis team had a remarkable season, showcasing its talent, determination and teamwork. With its impressive record and numerous player honors, it set a high standard for future teams to follow.

Lacrosse The varsity lacrosse team (14-8) wrapped up 2023 as the regional runner-up, ranking sixth in Ohio. Victories over state finalist St. Xavier, Mason, Milford and Springboro highlighted the season. Moeller competed in the prestigious Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association Conference, which is comprised of the top teams, including Culver Military Academy and Western Reserve Academy. Track and Field The track and field team ended the season at the state championship meet, tying for twenty-third place out of 75 scoring teams. The highlight of the meet was our secondplace finish in the 4×200-meter relay, missing the top spot by 0.28 of a second. It was a great year for the team, with numerous school and regional records being broken throughout the season. Rugby The rugby team had a fantastic season, kicking off with a trip to Nashville where they went undefeated. The team went on to the University of Kentucky to play Pendleton Indiana Rugby Club. At the end of March, Moeller defeated St. Xavier at home 43-7. In April, the varsity program defeated St. Louis University High School who went on to become Missouri state champions. The team closed the season with an impressive post-season run, beating St. Edward in the semi-final match up. Moeller ended the season as state runner-up. Hockey The varsity hockey team finished in the state top 20, playing teams ranked in the top 20. Highlights include: the first win over perennial powerhouse St. Ed’s, its first championship in the annual Hollydaze tournament hosted by Findlay and Bowling Green, a 3-1 victory over St. Xavier in the Crosstown Classic played in front of 2,000 fans at Heritage Bank Arena, and a 3-2 overtime victory over Olentangy Berlin on senior night. Varsity earned a place in the Capital Hockey Conference’s (CHC) elite Red Division for the third consecutive season and twenty Crusaders made the CHC all-academic teams.

Baseball The 2023 season was truly remarkable. The varsity team had high expectations after a successful 2022 campaign and was ranked number one in the state of Ohio during the preseason. The players responded by playing well all season and captured the ninth baseball state title in school history. After losing the first two games in Las Vegas on their spring trip, the team stood 4-2. It then went on to win 27 of the next 28 games, including 17 in a row to end the season, finishing 31-3 and ranked No. 5 in the country. This is the third time in school history that the team has exceeded the 30-win mark. It was first in every state poll and captured the state poll championship. Varsity earned the title of GCL champions, city champions, sectional champions, district champions, regional champions, and ultimately, state champions!

STATE CHAMPIONS Volleyball The State Championship 2023 Moeller volleyball season was historic in many ways. After battling through a tough regular season, the varsity volleyball team reached an overall record of 17-4. It finished third in the Centerville Elite tournament, second overall in the GCL and third in the MaxPreps regular season state rankings. It is the first team in state history to win the state championship three years in a row, the first team to have started down 2-0 in a championship match to come back and reverse sweep a team, and the first team to win an OHSAAsanctioned state tournament. Additionally, the varsity team finished with an overall record of 23-4, ranked second in the MaxPreps final season poll, 19th nationally and fifth in the Midwest region according to the AVCA. Congratulations once again to the 2023 Moeller volleyball state champions.

Esports After finishing as state runners up in 2022, Moeller returned to the University of Akron and was able to secure its first state championship. This is the first year Esports is sponsored by the OHSAA, so Moeller won the very first OHSAA Super Smash Bros. State Championship. The team went undefeated throughout the season, culminating with a regional championship and a state tournament berth. Only eight schools qualified for State. At the state tournament at the University of Akron, Moeller played six of the seven other schools between pool play on Saturday and tournament play on Sunday. They defeated all six schools by margins of either 4-1 or 5-0.
